Abstract:The development status and tendency of sealing materials and sealing technologies used in Solid Oxide Fuel Cell(SOFC) in the world are discussed in the paper.All varieties of advantages and disadvantages with sealing methods are indicated,as well as the research situation in different countries and districts.Moreover,reasonable and suitable sealing materials and sealing methods are showed according to the design requirements and properties of SOFC and in-situ situation of our countries in order to promote development of SOFC in China.

Abstract:In China, the large-scale coal-based fossil fuel consumption causes serious carbon emissions and environmental problems. There is an urgent need for China to develop innovative energy conversion and storage device in order to address the energy and environmental problems. A solid oxide cell (SOC) which can be operated in both fuel cell (SOFC) and electrolysis cell (SOEC) modes is a promising technology. It has been extensively studied during the past few decades and currently in the system demonstration and validation stage in China. This work comprehensively reviews the current status of SOC industry in China from materials, single cell/stack to system, revealing their superiorities and challenges, and prospects the future application scenarios and development trends of SOC.

Abstract:Today, in the 21~(st) century, the press from energy and environment is becoming higher and higher. While the coal is still used as a main source, the solid oxide fuel cell(SOFC) has become one of the high clear energy technologies, which directly use the carbon-based fuel. With the application of SOFC as large-scale power plant, at the same time, the demonstrating projects of SOFC as distributing power and standby power supply expand quickly. All over the world, there are all kinds of policies to encourage SOFC growing. The SOFC systems at the kilowatt stage have been adopted experimentally in army. The commercial progress of SOFC united by many countries are developed rapidly.

Abstract:Fossil fuel such as coal,oil and nature gas is the main energy resource in China even in the world.It has low power generation efficiency(approximately 30 %) and a great environmental impact,which needs to be improved.The fuel cell which could turn chemical energy directly into electrical energy is a kind of high efficiency power generation device(50 %~60 %).In all kinds of fuel cells,solid oxide fuel cell(SOFC) could use many kinds of carbon-based fuels which could be easily compatible with the existed energy resource supply system and has high power generation efficiency.All solid structures are adopted in SOFC system and excellent long term stability is observed during operation when using this kind of fuel cell.Low cost is obtained because no precious metal catalyst is used in SOFC.SOFC is especially suitable for distributed generation system and power supply system.Because of the energy structure and the superiority of rare earth resource in China,it is necessary to develop carbon-based SOFC.Improving long term stability and reducing costs are needed in the process from model operation to industrialization of SOFC.Several techniques of the carbon-based SOFC need to be focused on in the future,such as key materials,innovation by systematic integration,design and preparation of material,reaction characteristics of carbon-based fuels,cell structure,theoretical modeling and the problems of foundation science and technique in SOFC integration and operation.The measures above establish the foundation of industrialization for high efficiency,low cost and reliable carbon-based SOFC system.

Abstract:Developing of intermediate temperature(IT) and low temperature(LT) solid oxide fuel cell(SOFC) allows metal to be used as an appropriate material for SOFC.In consistant to other types of SOFCs,metalsupported SOFC(MS-SOFC) exhibits higher electrical and thermal conductivity,better mechanical strength and lower cost,and thereby has attracted more and more attentions.Recently,MS-SOFC has developed various structures and fabrication process of supporter,electrolyte and as well as the electrodes.In this paper,the state of the art of MS-SOFC and their fabrication process are reviewed and the key concerns on MS-SOFC are also put forward.

Abstract:The essential conditions and properties of interconnectors for the solid oxide fuel cell are introduced.Some problems of SOFC interconnectors under high temperature are summarized,and the development trends of some interconnectors are pointed out.At last,it is emphasized that the ferritic stainless steel containing rare earths and other trace elements is an important development orientation for the research of flat SOFC interconnectors.

Abstract:Chaozhou Three-Circle (Group) Co., Ltd. (CCTC) is a leading company in development and manufacturing of electronic and ceramic components. CCTC has been focusing on SOFC R&D and manufacturing since 2004, covering the complete value chain from powder to power. Based on anode-supported cell technology (ASC in fuel cell mode), the C2-stack in planar design using metallic interconnect exhibits a high efficiency of more than 69% (DC, LHV) at 1.5 kW. Long-term stack tests using pipeline natural gas have been conducted for 20,000 hours, with low degradation rates of below 0.4%/kh.

Abstract:A solid oxide fuel cell(SOFC) based building combined cooling,heating and power(BCCHP) system is put forward in response to the status of high energy consumption of conventional BCCHP system.In order to study the design of the system,a design method is proposed to realize the design of system,which employs the modeling of system components,model integration of system components and simulating calculation. It is showed that the design method can determine the sizes of the fuel cell and its auxiliary equipment based on the requirements of consumers,and it is a feasible instrument for the design of the system.

Abstract:A solid oxide electrolysis cell (SOEC) can be viewed as a solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) that runs in a reverse mode.The high temperature steam electrolysis using the SOEC,with advantages of high efficiency and energy saving and as one method of hydrogen production,is a focal point of researches in the new energy technology domain.This paper reviews the principles of the SOEC and its applications both at home and abroad.Overall,compared with foreign countries,there is still a large gap in applications of the SOEC at present in our country.This review aims to attract research interests in China and to promote cooperation and application of the SOEC technology.

Abstract:Solid oxide direct carbon fuel cell(SO-DCFC) has attracted more and more attention due to its unique advantages in the clean coal utilization.This paper depicted the basic concept and features of SO-DCFC,and comprehensive analyses of its main three research aspects including anodic reaction mechanisms,mechanism modeling and simulation,and performance improvement were also presented.Further research and development indicate that: the reaction mechanism in the anode is closely related to the contact between the carbon fuel and the anode,which is of great importance in the performance enhancement;the carbon direct electrochemical reaction will not take place when the carbon and anode are just physical contact;the gasification between carbon and CO2 is the rate determine step of SO-DCFC performance;the mechanism modeling and simulation of SO-DCFC should be strengthened;the performance is significantly improved by introducing carbon catalytic gasification and inhabitation of anodic CO carbon deposition.

Abstract:Lowing the operating temperature can greatly promote the commercialization of solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs), however it also results in a significant increase in cell impedance, which is the bottleneck for the development of intermediate temperature SOFCs (IT-SOFCs). Major hurdles in developing conventional single-phase cathode materials for IT-SOFCs are poor electrochemical performance or durability. The investigation of new cathode materials or the optimization of the existing cathodes is imminent for the development of IT-SOFCs. Among them, core-shell structured cathode can combine the advantages of multiple components, and has been demonstrated with excellent oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) catalytic activity and long-term stability. This review summarizes the recent research progress on core-shell structured cathode for enhanced electrochemical performance, long-term stability, CO2 tolerance and Cr tolerance. Furthermore, the future directions are discussed from a perspective of materials design, preparation and characterization. Core-shell structured cathodes are expected to play an increasingly critical role in the commercialization of IT-SOFCs.

Abstract:Solid Oxide Fuel Cells(SOFCs) represent an attractive technology for the conversion of chemical to electrical energy because of their high efficiencies and low environmental impact. Additionally, they also have good fuel flexibility and long-term stability, which could direct utilize the hydrocarbon fuels and contribute to the more sparing utilisation of remaining fossil fuel reserves. Thus, they have been regarded as one of the most promising green power generation system in the near future. SOFC stacks are the key components of SOFC power generation system. Planar SOFC stack fabricated by assembling the planar single cells in series have the advantages of short current route and thereby of the low ohmic cell resistance, high power density and performance, simple structure, relatively easy fabrication process and low cost. However, it still has drawbacks of difficult sealing technique, low thermal cycle stability and high performance degradation. In this paper, the recent progress of the research and development on planar SOFC single cells and stacks are comprehensively reviewed, including the materials and structures of single cells, sealing strategy and types of sealants, design and materials of interconnects and the design and assembly of the stacks. The state of the art technologies and the current achievements of the companies and institutes which take the lead in SOFC field are introduced as well. Finally, some key issues need to be addressed for promoting the commercialization processes of planar SOFC stacks are put forward.

Abstract:Solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs) represent one of the cleanest and most efficient options for the direct conversion of a wide variety of fuels to electricity. For example, SOFCs powered by natural gas are ideally suited for distributed power generation. However, the commercialization of SOFC technologies hinges on breakthroughs in materials development to dramatically reduce the cost while enhancing performance and durability. One of the critical obstacles to achieving high‐performance SOFC systems is the cathodes for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR), which perform poorly at low temperatures and degrade over time under operating conditions. Here a comprehensive review of the latest advances in the development of SOFC cathodes is presented: complex oxides without alkaline earth metal elements (because these elements could be vulnerable to phase segregation and contaminant poisoning). Various strategies are discussed for enhancing ORR activity while minimizing the effect of contaminant on electrode durability. Furthermore, some of the critical challenges are briefly highlighted and the prospects for future‐generation SOFC cathodes are discussed. A good understanding of the latest advances and remaining challenges in searching for highly active SOFC cathodes with robust tolerance to contaminants may provide useful guidance for the rational design of new materials and structures for commercially viable SOFC technologies.

Abstract:A solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) is a clean, efficient energy conversion device with wide fuel applicability. Metal-supported solid oxide fuel cells (MS-SOFCs) exhibit better thermal shock resistance, better machinability, and faster startup than traditional SOFCs, making them more suitable for commercial applications, especially in mobile transportation. However, many challenges remain that hinder the development and application of MS-SOFCs. High temperature may accelerate these challenges. In this paper, the existing problems in MS-SOFCs, including high-temperature oxidation, cationic interdiffusion, thermal matching, and electrolyte defects, as well as lower temperature preparation technologies, including the infiltration method, spraying method, and sintering aids method, are summarized from different perspectives, and the improvement strategy of existing material structure optimization and technology integration is put forward.

Abstract:Solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) has been considered to be a promising power generation technology due to that the hightemperature exhaust gas of SOFC can be used as another heat source for a bottoming cycle to increase the overall efficiency.This study presents a performance analysis for a combined power generation system consisting of an SOFC and a simple recuperated S-CO2 Brayton cycle.Four system layouts based on different exhaust utilization ways are analysed and compared in this study.The results indicate that the S-CO2 Brayton cycle can be a promising way for waste-heat recovery of SOFC.The system layout with six heat exchangers and two burners shows the highest output power while the system layout with seven heat exchangers and only one burner shows the highest thermal efficiency.

Abstract:This review provides an overview of the solid oxide fuel cell/gas turbine (SOFC/GT) hybrid system, highlighting its potential as a highly efficient and low-emission power generation technology. The operating principles and components of the SOFC/GT system, as well as the various configurations and integration strategies, are discussed. This review also examines the performance, advantages, and challenges of the SOFC/GT system, and discusses the research and development efforts aimed at improving its efficiency, reliability, and cost-effectiveness. This work provides an overview of the research conducted in the area of SOFC-based hybrid systems, which is expected to be beneficial for researchers who are interested in this area.
