Abstract:This paper explores interactions between multiple operating modes by exploiting a specifically designed piezoelectric motor. The stator includes a hollow polygon bar and two piezoelectric ceramic (PZT) plates. PZT plates were symmetrically bonded onto a brass substrate and used to actuate vibrational modes of stator. The presented motor can operate in three types of vibrational modes which are the second-order in-plane bending modes, the third-order in-plane bending modes and the first-order out-of-plane bending modes. These working modes can be excited independently or simultaneously. Moreover, each group of operating modes can both be actuated by applying single-phase and two-phase driving voltages to PZT plates. In order to produce all these vibration states, the structural parameters of stator are strictly designed to harmonize two eigenfrequencies of each type of vibrational modes by using finite element software ANSYS. After that, displacement characteristics of stator driving particles under different vibration states are all calculated to evaluate mutual effects of three kinds of operating modes. Simulation results reveal that these bending modes can be excited simultaneously and interact with each other. Vibration amplitude and trajectory of stator driving points can also be influenced. The response displacement of stator driving points reaches the maximum value when modes I and II are excited at the same time by supplying single-phase excitation voltage under the premise that its three-dimensional motion trajectory does not deform. The motor performances under this condition are also investigated experimentally. The dimension of the fabricated prototype motor is 10 mm×10 mm×20 mm. The stall torque is 0.2 N·m under 200 V single-phase excitation, when the motor operates in modes I and II simultaneously. The maximum no-load speed is 74 r/min.
