Recent status of the Dark Matter search with Edelweiss

Abstract:The Edelweiss experiment uses Ge-bolometers with an improved background rejection (interleaved electrode design) to search for WIMP dark matter. The setup is located in the underground laboratory, Laboratoire Souterrain de Modane (LSM, France). In 2009-2010 the collaboration successfully operated ten 400-g bolometers together with an active muon veto shielding. Published analysis of this measurement campaign was optimized for WIMP masses above 50 GeV. Recently, the analysis was extended to the low-mass WIMP region using a quality subset of the 2009-2010 data setting new limits on the spin-independent WIMP-nucleon scattering cross-section. We present the low-mass WIMP analysis, background investigations and the latest measurements with a subset of the forty 800-g detectors that will be installed for the Edelweiss-III. Ongoing installation works of the Edelweiss-III setup and further plans for a next generation experiment, EURECA, are discussed.

Abstract:Dark matter plays a crucial role in our comprehension of the universe, but its mysterious nature poses challenges for direct detection. A primary obstacle in detecting dark matter is distinguishing genuine signals from the prevailing electromagnetic background. Germanium and Silicon detectors have emerged as effective instruments in the pursuit of dark matter detection. Their minimal radioactive backgrounds, substantial active volumes, and efficient rejection mechanisms have significantly advanced our understanding of dark matter and its scattering cross section limits. Numerous experiments employing these detectors have yielded valuable insights into the properties of dark matter. Scientists have investigated potential dark matter candidates like Weakly Interacting Massive Particles (WIMPs) and evaluated their probability of being dark matter particles based on observed scattering cross sections. This review consolidates the findings from significant experiments, encompassing possible candidates and their likelihood of being dark matter particles. It also recognizes the limitations of dark matter scattering cross section by assessing progress in this field, detector technologies, experimental outcomes, and future prospects.

Abstract:The report describes the research program on the development of ultra-low-energy germanium detectors, with emphasis on WIMP dark matter searches. A threshold of 100 eV is achieved with a 20 g detector array, providing a unique probe to the low-mass WIMP. Present data at a surface laboratory is expected to give rise to comparable sensitivities with the existing limits at the 5 – 10 GeV WIMP-mass range. The projected parameter space to be probed with a full-scale, kilogram mass-range experiment is presented. Such a detector would also allow the studies of neutrino-nucleus coherent scattering and neutrino magnetic moments.

Abstract:The direct detection of MeV-scale dark matter (DM) particles hinges on achieving an exceptionally low energy detection threshold. Germanium (Ge) detectors, meticulously tailored with precise impurity compositions, hold the potential to enhance sensitivity to energy levels below the sub-electronvolt (sub-eV) range. This study explores the behavior of residual impurities inherent to Ge detectors at helium temperatures, unveiling a captivating freeze-out phenomenon leading to the formation of excited localized states known as dipole states. Using compelling evidence from relative capacitance measurements obtained from two detectors, we elucidate the transition of impurity atoms from free charge states to these dipole states as the temperature drops from 11 K to 6.5 K. Our investigation comprehensively covers the intricate formation of these dipole states in both n-type and p-type impurities. Furthermore, we shed light on the electric field generated by these dipole states, revealing their ability to trap charges and facilitate the creation of cluster dipole states. Confirming findings from previous measurements, we establish that these excited dipole states exhibit a binding energy of less than 10 meV, offering an exceptionally low detection threshold for MeV-scale DM. Building upon this concept, we propose the development of a 1-kg Ge detector with internal charge amplification, an innovative approach poised to surpass electrical noise and enable the detection of MeV-scale DM with unprecedented sensitivity.

Abstract:Light, MeV-scale dark matter (DM) is an exciting DM candidate that is undetectable by current experiments. A germanium (Ge) detector utilizing internal charge amplification for the charge carriers created by the ionization of impurities is a promising new technology with experimental sensitivity for detecting MeV-scale DM. We analyze the physics mechanisms of the signal formation, charge creation, charge internal amplification, and the projected sensitivity for directly detecting MeV-scale DM particles. We present a design for a novel Ge detector at helium temperature ($\sim$4 K) enabling ionization of impurities from DM impacts. With large localized E-fields, the ionized excitations can be accelerated to kinetic energies larger than the Ge bandgap at which point they can create additional electron-hole pairs, producing intrinsic amplification to achieve an ultra-low energy threshold of $\sim$0.1 eV for detecting low-mass DM particles in the MeV scale. Correspondingly, such a Ge detector with 1 kg-year exposure will have high sensitivity to a DM-nucleon cross section of $\sim$5$\times$10$^{-45}$ cm$^{2}$ at a DM mass of $\sim$10 MeV/c$^{2}$ and a DM-electron cross section of $\sim$5$\times$10$^{-46}$cm$^{2}$ at a DM mass of $\sim$1 MeV/c$^2$.

Sub-GeV Dark Matter Searches with EDELWEISS: New results and prospects

Abstract:The Edelweiss collaboration performs light Dark Matter (DM) particles searches with germanium bolometer collecting charge and phonon signals. Thanks to the Neganov-Trofimov-Luke (NTL) effect, a RMS resolution of 4.46 electron-hole pairs was obtained on a massive (200g) germanium detector instrumented with a NbSi Transition Edge Sensor (TES) operated underground at the Laboratoire Souterrain de Modane (LSM). This sensitivity made possible a search for WIMP using the Migdal effect down to 32 MeV/C$^{2}$ and exclude cross-sections down to 10$^{-29}$ cm$^2$. It is the first measurement in cryogenic germanium with such thermal sensor, proving the high relevance of this technology. Furthermore, such TES have shown sensitivity to out-of-equilibrium phonons, paving the way for EDELWEISS new experience CRYOSEL. This is an important step in the development of Ge detectors with improved performance in the context of the EDELWEISS-SubGeV program.

Abstract:In the last decade direct detection Dark Matter (DM) experiments have increased enormously their sensitivity and ton-scale setups have been proposed, especially using germanium and xenon targets with double readout and background discrimination capabilities. In light of this situation, we study the prospects for determining the parameters of Weakly Interacting Massive Particle (WIMP) DM (mass, spin-dependent (SD) and spin-independent (SI) cross section off nucleons) by combining the results of such experiments in the case of a hypothetical detection. In general, the degeneracy between the SD and SI components of the scattering cross section can only be removed using targets with different sensitivities to these components. Scintillating bolometers, with particle discrimination capability, very good energy resolution and threshold and a wide choice of target materials, are an excellent tool for a multitarget complementary DM search. We investigate how the simultaneous use of scintillating targets with different SD-SI sensitivities and/or light isotopes (as the case of CaF2 and NaI) significantly improves the determination of the WIMP parameters. In order to make the analysis more realistic we include the effect of uncertainties in the halo model and in the spin-dependent nuclear structure functions, as well as the effect of a thermal quenching different from 1.

Abstract:Dark Matter particles are commonly assumed to be weakly interacting massive particles (WIMPs) with a mass in the GeV to TeV range. However, recent interest has shifted toward lighter WIMPs, which are more difficult to probe experimentally. A detection of sub‐GeV WIMPs will require the use of small gap materials in sensors. Using recent estimates of the WIMP mass, we identify the relevant target space toward small gap materials (100 to 10 meV). Dirac Materials, a class of small‐ or zero‐gap materials, emerge as natural candidates for sensors for Dark Matter detection. We propose the use of informatics tools to rapidly assay materials band structures to search for small gap semiconductors and semimetals, rather than focusing on a few preselected compounds. As a specific example of the proposed strategy, we use the organic materials database (https://omdb.diracmaterials.org) to identify organic candidates for sensors: the narrow band gap semiconductors BNQ‐TTF and DEBTTT with gaps of 40 and 38 meV, and the Dirac‐line semimetal (BEDT‐TTF)·Br which exhibits a tiny gap of ≈50 meV when spin‐orbit coupling is included. We outline a novel and powerful approach to search for dark matter detection sensor materials by means of a rapid assay of materials using informatics tools. Specific properties for potential sensor materials for dark matter detection are defined. A materials informatics approach is discussed on the example of the organic materials database OMDB. Three potential candidate materials are identified. Two materials are tiny gap semiconductors. The third is a Dirac‐line semimetal which gaps out under the tiny spin‐orbit coupling present in the material.

Abstract:Weakly Interacting Massive Particles (WIMPs) may constitute a large fraction of the matter in the Universe. There are excess events in the data of DAMA/LIBRA, CoGeNT, CRESST-II, and recently CDMS-Si, which could be consistent with WIMP masses of approximately 10 GeV/c2. However, for MDM > 10 GeV/c2 null results of the CDMS-Ge, XENON, and LUX detectors may be in tension with the potential detections for certain dark matter scenarios and assuming a certain light response. We propose the use of a new class of biological dark matter (DM) detectors to further examine this light dark matter hypothesis, taking advantage of new signatures with low atomic number targets, Two types of biological DM detectors are discussed here: DNA-based detectors and enzymatic reactions (ER) based detectors. In the case of DNA-based detectors, we discuss a new implementation. In the case of ER detectors, there are four crucial phases of the detection process: a) change of state due to energy deposited by a particle; b) amplification due to the release of energy derived from the action of an enzyme on its substrate; c) sustainable but non-explosive enzymatic reaction; d) self-termination due to the denaturation of the enzyme, when the temperature is raised. This paper provides information of how to design as well as optimize these four processes.

Abstract:The EDELWEISS collaboration reports on the search for Dark Matter (DM) particle interactions via Migdal effect with masses between $32$ MeV$\cdot$c$^{-2}$ to $2$ GeV$\cdot$c$^{-2}$ using a $200$ g cryogenic Ge detector sensitive to simultaneously heat and ionization signals and operated underground at the Laboratoire Souterrain de Modane in France. The phonon signal was read out using a Transition Edge Sensor made of a NbSi thin film. The detector was biased at $66$ V in order to benefit from the Neganov-Trofimov-Luke amplification and resulting in a resolution on the energy of electron recoils of $4.46$ eV$_{ee}$ (RMS) and an analysis threshold of $30$ eV$_{ee}$. The sensitivity is limited by a dominant background not associated to charge creation in the detector. The search constrains a new region of parameter space for cross-sections down to $10^{-29}$ cm$^2$ and masses between $32$ and $100$ MeV$\cdot$c$^{-2}$. The achieved low threshold with the NbSi sensor shows the relevance of its use for athermal-phonon sensitive devices for low-mass DM searches.

Abstract:Weakly Interacting Massive Particles (WIMPs) continue to be considered some of the best-motivated Dark Matter (DM) candidates. No conclusive signal, despite an extensive search program that combines, often in a complementary way, direct, indirect, and collider probes, has been however detected so far. This situation might change in the near future with the advent of even larger, multi-ton Direct Detection experiments. We provide here an updated review of the WIMP paradigm, with a focus on selected models that can be probed with upcoming facilities, all relying on the standard freeze-out paradigm for the relic density. We also discuss Collider and Indirect Searches when they provide complementary experimental information.

Abstract:An energy threshold of (220 +/- 10) eV was achieved at an efficiency of 50% with a four-channel ultralow-energy germanium detector, each with an active mass of 5 g. This provides a unique probe to weakly interacting massive particles (WIMP) dark matter with mass below 10 GeV. With a data acquisition live time of 0.338 kg-day at the Kuo-Sheng Laboratory, constraints on WIMPs in the galactic halo were derived. The limits improve over previous results on both spin-independent WIMP-nucleon and spin-dependent WIMP-neutron cross-sections for WIMP mass between 3 and 6 GeV. Sensitivities for full-scale experiments are projected. This detector technique makes the unexplored sub-keV energy window accessible for new neutrino and dark matter experiments.

This period is naturally accompanied by claims of detection.
