Recent status of the Dark Matter search with Edelweiss

Abstract:The Edelweiss experiment uses Ge-bolometers with an improved background rejection (interleaved electrode design) to search for WIMP dark matter. The setup is located in the underground laboratory, Laboratoire Souterrain de Modane (LSM, France). In 2009-2010 the collaboration successfully operated ten 400-g bolometers together with an active muon veto shielding. Published analysis of this measurement campaign was optimized for WIMP masses above 50 GeV. Recently, the analysis was extended to the low-mass WIMP region using a quality subset of the 2009-2010 data setting new limits on the spin-independent WIMP-nucleon scattering cross-section. We present the low-mass WIMP analysis, background investigations and the latest measurements with a subset of the forty 800-g detectors that will be installed for the Edelweiss-III. Ongoing installation works of the Edelweiss-III setup and further plans for a next generation experiment, EURECA, are discussed.

Abstract:An overview of non-directional direct detection methods is given. The currently leading experiments for spin independent WIMPs interactions are using simultaneous measurement of two quantities for event-by-event background discrimination in cryogenic bolometers and noble gas like xenon. Besides these, several interesting techniques have been developped, each having a specific advantage concerning e.g energy threshold lowering or strong immunity to ionizing radiations background. Technologies used and most recent results about spin-dependent and spin-independent cases are presented.

Abstract:Indirect detection of dark matter particles, i.e. the detection of annihilation or decay products of Weakly Interacting Massive Particles, has entered a pivotal phase as experiments reach sensitivities that probe the most interesting parameter space. This period is naturally accompanied by claims of detection. In this contribution I discuss and compare different probes (gamma-rays, neutrinos and charged cosmic rays) and review the status and prospects of constraints and recent detection claims.

Abstract:Weakly Interacting Massive Particles (WIMPs) may constitute a large fraction of the matter in the Universe. There are excess events in the data of DAMA/LIBRA, CoGeNT, CRESST-II, and recently CDMS-Si, which could be consistent with WIMP masses of approximately 10 GeV/c2. However, for MDM > 10 GeV/c2 null results of the CDMS-Ge, XENON, and LUX detectors may be in tension with the potential detections for certain dark matter scenarios and assuming a certain light response. We propose the use of a new class of biological dark matter (DM) detectors to further examine this light dark matter hypothesis, taking advantage of new signatures with low atomic number targets, Two types of biological DM detectors are discussed here: DNA-based detectors and enzymatic reactions (ER) based detectors. In the case of DNA-based detectors, we discuss a new implementation. In the case of ER detectors, there are four crucial phases of the detection process: a) change of state due to energy deposited by a particle; b) amplification due to the release of energy derived from the action of an enzyme on its substrate; c) sustainable but non-explosive enzymatic reaction; d) self-termination due to the denaturation of the enzyme, when the temperature is raised. This paper provides information of how to design as well as optimize these four processes.

Abstract:Weakly Interacting Massive Particles (WIMPs) continue to be considered some of the best-motivated Dark Matter (DM) candidates. No conclusive signal, despite an extensive search program that combines, often in a complementary way, direct, indirect, and collider probes, has been however detected so far. This situation might change in the near future with the advent of even larger, multi-ton Direct Detection experiments. We provide here an updated review of the WIMP paradigm, with a focus on selected models that can be probed with upcoming facilities, all relying on the standard freeze-out paradigm for the relic density. We also discuss Collider and Indirect Searches when they provide complementary experimental information.

Abstract:A low pressure time projection chamber for the detection of WIMPs is discussed. Discrimination against Compton electron background in such a device should be very good, and directional information about the recoil atoms would be obtainable. If a full 3-D reconstruction of the recoil tracks can be achieved, Monte Carlo studies indicate that a WIMP signal could be identified with high confidence from as few as 30 detected WIMP-nucleus scattering events.

Abstract:We describe an important new technique to search for WIMPs. This technique employs a method of background discrimination using double phase xenon as detector target. We describe the construction of a two-phase, l-kg xenon detector. Thr detector will be installed at the underground laboratory in the Mt. Blanc tunnel, which provides a low background rate. Abstract:The DAMA experiments are running deep underground in the Gran Sasso National Laboratory. Several interesting results have been achieved so far. Here a maximum likelihood method to search for the WIMP annual modulation signature is discussed and applied to a set of preliminary test data collected with large mass highly radiopure NaI(Tl) detectors. Various related technical arguments are briefly addressed.

Abstract:Dark matter accounts for 26% of the mass-energy density of the Universe, however, its nature and origins remain the most important open questions in physics. The search for Weakly Interacting Massive Particles (WIMPs), one of the leading dark matter particle candidates, is now in a decisive phase, with experiments targeting both the high-mass and the low-mass (1-10 GeV/$c^2$) WIMP scenarios. The status of the leading experimental searches is discussed, together with their prospects and challenges they are facing. Searches of heavy non-WIMP dark matter candidates are also briefly summarized.

Abstract:The Cryogenic Dark Matter search experiment (CDMS) employs low-temperature Ge and Si detectors to detect WIMPs via their elastic scattering of target nuclei. The last analysis with an germanium exposure of 397.8 kg-days resulted in zero observed candidate events, setting an upper limit on the spin-independent WIMP-nucleon cross-section of 6.6 x 10^{-44} cm^2 (4.6 x 10^{-44} cm^2, when previous CDMS Soudan data is included) for a WIMP mass of 60 GeV. The improvements in the surface event rejection capability for the current analysis with an germanium exposure about a factor of 2.5 greater than used in the last analysis will be discussed. To increase the sensitivity beyond the 1 x 10^{-44} cm^2 benchmark new 1 inch thick detectors have been developed. A first tower consisting of six of these detectors has been successfully installed at the Soudan site. These detectors will be used in a 15 kg SuperCDMS stage with an expected sensitivity on the spin-independent WIMP-nucleon elastic scattering cross-section of 5 x 10^{-45} cm^2. In addition, the CDMS Collaboration has started to look for signatures of non WIMP dark matter particles, which may explain the annual modulation signature observed by DAMA.

Abstract:Measuring an annual modulation in a direct Dark Matter detection experiment is not only a proof of the existence of WIMPs but can also tell us more about their interaction with standard matter and maybe even their density and velocity in the halo. Such a modulation has been measured by the DAMA/LIBRA experiment in NaI(Tl) crystals. However, the interpretation as WIMP signal is controversial due to contradicting results by other experiments. The SABRE experiment aims to shed light on this controversy by detecting the annual modulation in the same target material as DAMA with twin detectors at LNGS in Italy and at SUPL in Australia. The two locations in the northern and southern hemisphere allow to verify if other seasonal effects or the site have an influence on the measurement, thus reducing systematic effects. This paper will give an overview on the experimental design, the current status of the proof of principle phase mainly devoted to high-purity crystal growing, and an outlook on future plans.

Abstract:The report describes the research program on the development of ultra-low-energy germanium detectors, with emphasis on WIMP dark matter searches. A threshold of 100 eV is achieved with a 20 g detector array, providing a unique probe to the low-mass WIMP. Present data at a surface laboratory is expected to give rise to comparable sensitivities with the existing limits at the 5 – 10 GeV WIMP-mass range. The projected parameter space to be probed with a full-scale, kilogram mass-range experiment is presented. Such a detector would also allow the studies of neutrino-nucleus coherent scattering and neutrino magnetic moments.
Reconstructing the Velocity Distribution of WIMPs from Direct Dark Matter Detection Data

Abstract:Weakly interacting massive particles (WIMPs) are one of the leading candidates for dark matter. Currently, the most promising method to detect many different WIMP candidates is the direct detection of the recoil energy deposited in a low-background laboratory detector due to elastic WIMP-nucleus scattering. So far the usual procedure has been to predict the event rate of direct detection of WIMPs based on some model(s) of the galactic halo. The aim of our work is to invert this process. That is, we study what future direct detection experiment can teach us about the WIMP halo. As the first step we consider a time-averaged recoil spectrum, assuming that no directional information exists. We develop a method to construct the (time-averaged) one-dimensional velocity distribution function from this spectrum. Moments of this function, such as the mean velocity and velocity dispersion of WIMPs, can also be obtained directly from the recoil spectrum. The only input needed in addition to a measured recoil spectrum is the mass of the WIMP; no information about the scattering cross section or WIMP density is required.

Abstract:The CDMS II experiment uses Z-dependent Ionization Phonon (ZIP) detectors made of Germanium and Silicon to identify nuclear recoils from Weakly Interacting Massive Particles (WIMPs) with near complete event-by-event rejection of various radioactive backgrounds. In 2004 CDMS II operated 6 Ge ZIPs and 6 Si ZIPs. The 74.5 live days of operation gave after cuts 34 kg*d exposure for the Ge ZIPs and 15 kg*d exposure for Si ZIPs. All criteria for identifying a signal from nuclear recoil due to WIMPs were developed blind with respect to the WIMP search data. The new 90% C.L. upper limit on the spin-independent WIMP-nucleon cross section is 1.6e-43 cm2 from Si, for a WIMP mass of 60 GeV/c2. The experiment has recently upgraded to 19 Ge ZIPs totaling 4.8 kg, and 11 Si ZIPs totaling 1.9 kg. The goal is to increase sensitivity with running in 2006 and 2007 by one order of magnitude.

Abstract:The Cryogenic Dark Matter Search (CDMS) employs Ge and Si detectors to search for WIMPs via their elastic-scattering interactions with nuclei while discriminating against interactions of background particles. CDMS data give limits on the spin-independent WIMP-nucleon elastic-scattering cross-section that exclude unexplored parameter space above 10 GeV c^{-2} WIMP mass and, at > 84% CL, the entire 3$\sigma$ allowed region for the WIMP signal reported by the DAMA experiment.

Abstract:The energy spectrum of nuclear recoils in Weakly Interacting Massive Particle (WIMP) direct detection experiments depends on the underlying WIMP mass (strongly for light WIMPs, weakly for heavy WIMPs). We discuss how the accuracy with which the WIMP mass could be determined by a single direct detection experiment depends on the detector configuration and the WIMP properties. In particular we examine the effects of varying the underlying WIMP mass, the detector target nucleus, exposure, energy threshold and maximum energy, the local velocity distribution and the background event rate and spectrum.
