Abstract:The Edelweiss experiment uses Ge-bolometers with an improved background rejection (interleaved electrode design) to search for WIMP dark matter. The setup is located in the underground laboratory, Laboratoire Souterrain de Modane (LSM, France). In 2009-2010 the collaboration successfully operated ten 400-g bolometers together with an active muon veto shielding. Published analysis of this measurement campaign was optimized for WIMP masses above 50 GeV. Recently, the analysis was extended to the low-mass WIMP region using a quality subset of the 2009-2010 data setting new limits on the spin-independent WIMP-nucleon scattering cross-section. We present the low-mass WIMP analysis, background investigations and the latest measurements with a subset of the forty 800-g detectors that will be installed for the Edelweiss-III. Ongoing installation works of the Edelweiss-III setup and further plans for a next generation experiment, EURECA, are discussed.

Abstract:Dark matter accounts for 26% of the mass-energy density of the Universe, however, its nature and origins remain the most important open questions in physics. The search for Weakly Interacting Massive Particles (WIMPs), one of the leading dark matter particle candidates, is now in a decisive phase, with experiments targeting both the high-mass and the low-mass (1-10 GeV/$c^2$) WIMP scenarios. The status of the leading experimental searches is discussed, together with their prospects and challenges they are facing. Searches of heavy non-WIMP dark matter candidates are also briefly summarized.

Abstract:Weakly Interacting Massive Particles (WIMPs) continue to be considered some of the best-motivated Dark Matter (DM) candidates. No conclusive signal, despite an extensive search program that combines, often in a complementary way, direct, indirect, and collider probes, has been however detected so far. This situation might change in the near future with the advent of even larger, multi-ton Direct Detection experiments. We provide here an updated review of the WIMP paradigm, with a focus on selected models that can be probed with upcoming facilities, all relying on the standard freeze-out paradigm for the relic density. We also discuss Collider and Indirect Searches when they provide complementary experimental information.

Indirect and direct detection prospect for TeV dark matter in the MSSM-9

Abstract:We investigate the prospects of indirect and direct dark matter searches within the minimal supersymmetric standard model with nine parameters (MSSM-9). These nine parameters include three gaugino masses, Higgs, slepton and squark masses, all treated independently. We perform a Bayesian Monte Carlo scan of the parameter space taking into consideration all available particle physics constraints such as the Higgs mass of 126 GeV, upper limits on the scattering cross-section from direct-detection experiments, and assuming that the MSSM-9 provides all the dark matter abundance through thermal freeze-out mechanism. Within this framework we find two most probable regions for dark matter: 1-TeV higgsino-like and 3-TeV wino-like neutralinos. We discuss prospects for future indirect (in particular the Cherenkov Telescope Array, CTA) and direct detection experiments. We find that for slightly contracted dark matter profiles in our Galaxy, which can be caused by the effects of baryonic infall in the Galactic center, CTA will be able to probe a large fraction of the remaining allowed region in synergy with future direct detection experiments like XENON-1T.

Abstract:The nature of dark matter in the Universe is one of the hardest unsolved problems in modern physics. Indeed, on one hand, the overwhelming indirect evidence from astrophysics seems to leave no doubt about its existence; on the other hand, direct search experiments, especially those conducted with low-background detectors in underground laboratories all over the world, seem to deliver only null results with a few debated exceptions. Furthermore, the lack of predicted candidates on the LHC energy scale has made this dichotomy even more puzzling. We will recall the most important phases of this novel branch of experimental astro-particle physics, analyzing the interconnections among the main projects involved in this challenging quest, and we will draw conclusions slightly different from how the problem is commonly understood.

Reconstructing the Velocity Distribution of WIMPs from Direct Dark Matter Detection Data

Abstract:Weakly interacting massive particles (WIMPs) are one of the leading candidates for dark matter. Currently, the most promising method to detect many different WIMP candidates is the direct detection of the recoil energy deposited in a low-background laboratory detector due to elastic WIMP-nucleus scattering. So far the usual procedure has been to predict the event rate of direct detection of WIMPs based on some model(s) of the galactic halo. The aim of our work is to invert this process. That is, we study what future direct detection experiment can teach us about the WIMP halo. As the first step we consider a time-averaged recoil spectrum, assuming that no directional information exists. We develop a method to construct the (time-averaged) one-dimensional velocity distribution function from this spectrum. Moments of this function, such as the mean velocity and velocity dispersion of WIMPs, can also be obtained directly from the recoil spectrum. The only input needed in addition to a measured recoil spectrum is the mass of the WIMP; no information about the scattering cross section or WIMP density is required.

Abstract:The weakly interacting massive particle (WIMP) paradigm is one of the most compelling scenarios for particle dark matter (DM). We show in this paper that a high energy muon collider can make decisive statements about the WIMP DM, and this should serve as one of its main physics driver cases. We demonstrate this by employing the DM as the lightest member of an electroweak (EW) multiplet, which is a simple, yet one of the most challenging WIMP scenarios given its minimal collider signature and high thermal target mass scale of 1–23 TeV. We perform a first study of the reach of high energy muon colliders, focusing on the simple, inclusive, and conservative signals with large missing mass, through the mono-photon, vector boson fusion di-muon and a novel mono-muon channel. Using these inclusive signals, it is possible to cover the thermal targets of doublet and triplet with a 10 TeV muon collider. Higher energies, 14 TeV–75 TeV, would ensure a 5σ reach above the thermal targets for the higher EW multiplets. We also estimate the reach of a search for disappearing tracks, demonstrating the potential significant enhancement of the sensitivity.

Abstract:In a previous publication, we showed that a high energy muon collider can make decisive statements about the electroweak (WIMP) Dark Matter (DM), reaching a DM mass which could give the observed thermal relic abundance. In this document, we report new studies of the spin-$0$ minimal WIMP DM at high energy muon colliders, and update our results on the fermionic spin-$1/2$ case. We find that, by combining multiple inclusive missing mass search channels, it is possible to fully cover the thermal targets of fermionic and scalar doublets, and Dirac triplet, with a 10 TeV muon collider. Higher energies, 14 TeV$-$30 TeV, would be able to cover the thermal targets of Majorana and scalar triplet. For direct discovery of the higher EW multiplets with $n\geq5$, one may need to go beyond a 30 TeV muon collider to fully cover their thermal mass expectation.

Abstract:Radio-frequency, indirect dark matter searches have recently been gaining prevalence, due to the high sensitivity and resolution capabilities of the new generation of radio interferometers. MeerKAT is currently one of the most sensitive instruments of its kind, making it ideal for indirect dark matter searches. By making use of publicly available data from the MeerKAT Galaxy Cluster Legacy Survey we are able to use both the observed diffuse synchrotron emission and non-detections to constrain the WIMP dark matter parameter space. In addition to a subset of generic WIMP annihilation channels, we probe the dark matter candidate within the 2HDM+S particle physics model, which was developed as an explanation for anomalies observed in the Large Hadron Collider data from runs 1 and 2. By undertaking a statistical analysis of the radio flux densities within galaxy clusters we are able to exclude the thermal relic value for WIMP masses $< \, \sim 1000 $ GeV for annihilation into bottom quarks with our median case. This is competitive with the best constraints in the current literature.

Abstract:The Weakly Interacting Massive Particle (WIMP) paradigm is one of the most popular scenarios for Dark Matter (DM) theories that however is strongly constrained, in particular by direct detection experiments. We stick with the WIMP hypothesis and consider a Dirac fermion candidate for DM that interacts with the Standard Model (SM) via a spin-1 $Z'$, arising from the spontaneous breaking of an Abelian $U(1)'_{\mu}$ gauge symmetry, under which only second generation leptons and the DM are appropriately charged. Due to the charge assignment, the model is gauge anomalous and can only be interpreted as an effective field theory (EFT) at low energy. The $Z'$ couples at tree level only to the vector DM current, to the axial muon current and to left-handed muonic neutrinos, so the WIMP-nucleon cross section is beyond the experimental reach of spin-independent (SI) direct detection searches. We study the current bounds on this model coming from direct and indirect detection of DM, collider searches, contributions to $(g-2)_{\mu}$ and to neutrino trident production. We find that large regions of the parameter space remains to be explored. In the context of LHC searches, we study the impact of a muon-exclusive signal region for the $3\mu$ + ${E}^{\rm miss}_T$ channel with an invariant mass window around $m_{Z'}$. We show that this search can significantly improve the current collider bounds. Finally, from the anomalous nature of our EFT, there remain at low energy triboson anomalous interactions between the $Z'$ and the electroweak (EW) SM gauge bosons. We explore the possibilities of probing these interactions at the LHC and at a 100 TeV proton collider finding it extremely challenging. On the other hand, for a muon collider the resonant channel $\mu^{+}\mu^{-}\to Z'\to ZZ$ could be discovered in the most promising scenario with luminosity of $\mathcal{O}({\rm few}\; 10)$ ${\rm fb}^{-1}$.

The currently leading experiments for spin independent WIMPs interactions are using simultaneous measurement of two quantities for event-by-event background discrimination in cryogenic bolometers and noble gas like xenon. Besides these, several interesting techniques have been developped, each having a specific advantage concerning e.g energy threshold lowering or strong immunity to ionizing radiations background. Abstract:Up to now searches for Dark Matter (DM) detection have not been successful, either because our paradigm in howDMsignals should look like are wrong or the detector sensitivity is still too low in spite of the large progress made in recent years. We discuss both possibilities starting with what we know about DM from cosmology and why Supersymmetry provides such an interesting paradigm for cosmology and particle physics in order to appreciate what it means to give up this paradigm. In addition, we compare the predicted cross sections for direct and indirect DM detection with observations with emphasis on the latest developments. Especially, we discuss the possible origins of the two hotly debated candidates for a DM annihilation signal, namely the positron excess and the Fermi GeV excess, which are unfortunately incompatible with each other and more mundane astrophysical explanations exist.

Abstract:The direct detection of dark matter constituents, in particular the weakly interacting massive particles (WIMPs), is central to particle physics and cosmology. In this paper we study WIMP induced transitions from isomeric nuclear states for two possible isomeric candidates: Ta180 and Ho166 . The experimental setup, which can measure the possible decay of Ta180 induced by WIMPs, was proposed. The corresponding estimates of the half-life of Ta180 are given in the sense that the WIMP-nucleon interaction can be interpreted as ordinary radioactive decay.
