Abstract:Fabry-Perot interferometers have been widely studied and used for well over a century. However, they have always been treated as stationary devices in the past. In this paper, we investigate the optical transmission of a longitudinally moving Fabry-Perot interferometer within the framework of relativity and establish a general relation between the transmission coefficient and the velocity for uniform motions. Several features of the transmission spectrum are analyzed, including velocity-dependent frequency rescaling, the Fabry-Perot transmittance, and the transmission phase near resonance. Special attentions are given to the non-relativistic regime, where application prospects are evaluated. Potential new interferometric schemes, such as velocity-scanning interferometry and hybrid interferometers based on nested configurations, are proposed. Finally, a special case of non-uniform motion is also investigated.

Abstract:Surface energy modification was utilized in the fabrication of hollow transmission Fabry-Perot interferometer (FPI) for the first time. Polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) was used to modify the surface energy of substrate for the self-assembly of poly(vinylidenefluoride-trifluoroethylene) [P(VDF-TrFE)] 70/30 mol% copolymer film on given areas, which is simple and low destructive for the photoelectric device. A strain of 7.12% under a field of 22.3 MV/m was observed from the copolymer film, which led to the FPI with a tunable range of 54 nm at wavelength of 604 nm.
General theory of a moving Fabry-Perot interferometer and its application to the Pound-Drever-Hall technique

Abstract:In a follow-up effort to our prior report on the optical transmission of a moving Fabry-Perot interferometer \cite{Pyvovar}, this work seeks to establish a general framework that describes the transmission and reflection properties of a Fabry-Perot interferometer when key components in its operation system, including the light source, the detector and the interferometer itself, have relative motions against each other along their common optical axis. Our analysis indicates that these movements result in various new factors in the transmission and reflection coefficients, which all find their roots in the Doppler effect. As a demonstration of its potential application, the new theory is applied to the Pound-Drever-Hall frequency-locking technique. It is shown that velocity-induced frequency modulations are effectively added to the laser frequency due to the motions, and such excess frequency noise can be impactful in certain applications.

Abstract:Herein, we propose and experimentally demonstrate a novel, to the best of our knowledge, all-fiber Fabry–Perot (FP) interferometer that is formed by a simple angled fiber that can function as a beam splitter. According to the principle of the angled fiber, we verify the influence of an oblique angle on the light propagation path and light intensity ratio. Subsequently, angled fiber-based FP interferometers are experimentally demonstrated, and the influence of the oblique angle on the visibility of interference fringes and temperature characteristics is investigated. Finally, the temperature characteristics of this proposed FP interferometer are investigated experimentally, and the temperature sensitivity is 12.62 and 10.89 pm/°C for 42° and 40° angled fiber-based fiber FP interferometers, respectively. This proposed FP interferometer is fabricated by using a simple angled fiber, which has the advantages of ease of fabrication and all-fiber characteristics and hence can meet the requirements of mass production and high stability in various practical application areas.

Abstract:We have studied theoretically and experimentally the dynamic behavior of a nonlinear Fabry-Perot interferrometer filled with a Kerr medium. The Fabry-Perot responses ranging from extremely transient to quasi-steady-state in various modes of operation are considered. The experimental results are in excellent agreement with theory. It is shown that the quasi-steady-state operation requires not only a medium response time much smaller than the cavity round-trip time, but also a characteristic time of the input intensity variation several hundred times larger than the cavity round-trip time. Even in the quasi-steady-state limit, optical switching is often featured by overshoot and ringing after switching. The switching speed is limited by the cavity buildup time.

Abstract:Today's most precise optical instruments -- gravitational-wave interferometers and optical atomic clocks -- rely on long storage times for photons to realize their exquisite sensitivity. Optical fiber technology is the most widely deployed platform for realizing long-distance optical propagation. Yet, their application to precision optical measurements is sparse. We review the state-of-the-art in the noise performance of conventional (solid-core) optical fibers from the perspective of precision optical measurements and quantum technology that rely on precise transfer of information over long distances. In doing so, we highlight the limitations of this platform and point to the opportunities that structured fiber technology offers to overcome some of these limitations.

Abstract:A novel in-line Fabry-Pérot interferometer is directly fabricated in a single mode fiber by the use of femtosecond lasers.The spectrum fringe of this interferometer has the visibility of ～ 5 dB due to the rough and slopped cavity surfaces,making it more difficult for post signal processing and reducing the measurement accuracy and reliability.By choosing the optimal parameters,improving machining environments and methods,ideal Fabry- Pérot cavities are fabricated,which are so smooth and parallel that the fringe visibility is as high as ～ 18 dB.In addition,with an accessible cavity and all-fiber structure,this sensor can work in high temperatures up to 800 ℃, which is attractive for sensing applications in harsh environments.

Abstract:Because of its compact size and portability, optical fiber has been wildly used as optical paths in frequency-scanning interferometers for high-precision absolute distance measurements. However, since the fiber is sensitive to ambient temperature, its length and refractive index change with temperature, resulting in an optical path length drift that influences the repeatability of measurements. To improve the thermal stability of the measurement system, a novel frequency-scanning interferometer composed of two Michelson-type interferometers sharing a common fiber optical path is proposed. One interferometer defined as origin interferometer is used to monitor the drift of the measurement origin due to the optical path length drift of the optical fiber under on-site environment. The other interferometer defined as measurement interferometer is used to measure the distance to the target. Because the optical path length drift of the fiber appears in both interferometers, its influence can be eliminated by subtracting the optical path difference of the origin interferometer from the optical path difference of the measurement interferometer. A prototype interferometer was developed in our research, and experimental results demonstrate its robustness and stability. Under on-site environment, an accuracy about 4 mu m was achieved for a distance of about 1 m.

Abstract:A theoretical model is developed to address the fringe visibility and additional phase in the interference spectra of low-finesse extrinsic optical fiber excited Fabry-Pérot interferometers. The model described in the paper applies to both single-mode and multimode fiber excitations; according to the theory, the fringe visibility and additional phase term are primarily determined by the working wavelength and angular power density distribution outputting from the excitation fiber, rather than based on spatial and temporal degree of coherence. Under certain approximations, the output interference intensity and the spatial power density distribution projected onto the fiber axis form a Fourier-transform pair, which potentially provides a tool for spatial density distribution analysis of fiber output. With excellent agreement with experiments, the theory presented in this paper leads to design guidelines for Fabry-Pérot interferometric sensors and insightful physical understanding of such devices.

Abstract:Two kinds of in-line all-fiber interferometers, including tip Fabry–Perot interferometer and compact Mach–Zehnder interferometer, are proposed and demonstrated by fusion splicing a short section of hollow optical fiber (HOF) to the end of single-mode fiber (SMF) and sandwiching a section of HOF in between two sections of SMF, respectively. In both interferometers, a small lateral offset is introduced to induce the optical path difference required to form the interferometer. Temperature responses of both types of interferometers are studied experimentally. Abstract:A Mach-Zehnder interferometer with absorbing Fabry-Pérot cavities is used to measure the optical phase differences upon rotation around a vertical axis. The details of the expected experimental results are described based on the idea that a conducting medium can introduce phase differences due to changes in material conductivity that are expected to occur when a medium moves with respect to a reference frame. Experimental details and results are discussed.

Abstract:This article introduces an approach for modeling the fiber optic low-finesse extrinsic Fabry-Perot Interferometers (EFPI), aiming to address signal processing problems in EFPI demodulation algorithms based on white light interferometry. The main goal is to seek physical interpretations to correlate the sensor spectrum with the interferometer geometry (most importantly, the optical path difference). Because the signal demodulation quality and reliability hinge heavily on the understanding of such relationships, the model sheds light on optimizing the sensor performance.

Abstract:A novel, to the best of our knowledge, interferometry based on the laser feedback technique with long transmission distance is proposed. The system has the advantages of high sensitivity for uncooperative targets and a simple structure. Also, the quasi-common path orthogonally polarized light compensation method is designed to compensate for the drift in long-distance transmission and achieves more than 200 times reduction experimentally. Using a copper block as a target, the displacement resolution of 20 nm is demonstrated experimentally with 300 m transmission distance. The sub-microwatt power consumption of the measurement beam indicates the high sensitivity of the interferometry. The performance, in terms of linearity, is also evaluated. Although a lot needs to be improved, the proposed method is promising for further development toward practical applications, like sensors in remote, nuclear radiative, or other harsh conditions. Abstract:We design an optical fiber spectrometer based on optical fiber Mach-Zehnder interferometer. In optical fiber Fourier transform spectrometer spectra information is obtained by Fourier transform of interferogram, which recording intensity change vs. optical path difference. Optical path difference is generated by stretching one fiber arm which wound around fiber stretch drive by high power supply. Information from detector is linear with time rather than with optical path difference. In order to obtain high accuracy wavenumber, reference beam is used to control the optical path difference. Optical path difference is measured by reference laser interference fringe. Interferogram vs. optical path difference is resampled by Brault algorithm with information from reference beam and test beam. In the same condition, one-sided interferogram has higher resolution than that of two-sided interferogram. For one-sided interferogram, zero path difference position must be determined as accurately as possible, small shift will result in phase error. For practical experiment in laboratory, position shift is inevitable, so phase error correction must be considered. Zero order fringe is determined by curve fitting. Spectrum of light source is obtained from one-sided interferogram by Fourier cosine transform. A spectral resolution of about similar to 3.1cm(-1). is achieved. In practice, higher resolution is needed. This compact equipment will be used in emission spectra and absorption spectra, especially in infrared region.

Abstract:We review our works on Fabry-Perot (F-P) interferometric fiber-optic sensors with various applications. We give a general model of F-P interferometric optical fiber sensors including diffraction loss caused by the beam divergence and the Gouy phase shift. Based on different structures of an F-P cavity formed on the end of a single-mode fiber, the F-P interferometric optical sensor has been extended to measurements of the refractive index (RI) of liquids and solids, temperature as well as small displacement. The RI of liquids and solids can be obtained by monitoring the fringe contrast related to Fresnel reflections, while the ambient temperature and small displacement can be obtained by monitoring the wavelength shift of the interference fringes. The F-P interferometric fiber-optic sensors can be used for many scientific and technological applications.
