Abstract:Tungsten (W) has been selected as a hydrogen permeation barrier (HPB) for nuclear fusion applications due to its very low hydrogen permeability. In this research, high-purity tungsten (99,999%) layers of 100 nm and 300 nm were deposited via magnetron sputtering on the hydrogen charging side of a reduced activation ferritic martensitic (RAFM) F82H thin steel membrane. Gaseous hydrogen permeation tests were conducted on the W-coated and uncoated F82H steel at 30 °C, 50 °C, and 70 °C. A reduction in the hydrogen flux is measured on the W-coated specimens. The permeation reduction factor (PRF) is calculated after the analysis of the transients and the values vary between 3 and 4006. The scatter of PRF is attributed to the presence of defects in the W-layers. W-layer thickness appears as a more relevant factor on PRF values compared to the surface preparation of the substrate. Characterization and control of the defects in the W-layers are crucial to achieve reliable and effective HPBs.
