Abstract:This paper initiates the reverse mathematics of social choice theory, studying Arrow's impossibility theorem and related results including Fishburn's possibility theorem and the Kirman--Sondermann theorem within the framework of reverse mathematics. We formalise fundamental notions of social choice theory in second-order arithmetic, yielding a definition of countable society which is tractable in $\mathsf{RCA}_0$. We then show that the Kirman--Sondermann analysis of social welfare functions can be carried out in $\mathsf{RCA}_0$. This approach yields a proof of Arrow's theorem in $\mathsf{RCA}_0$, and thus in $\mathrm{PRA}$, since Arrow's theorem can be formalised as a $\Pi^0_1$ sentence. Finally we show that Fishburn's possibility theorem for countable societies is equivalent to $\mathsf{ACA}_0$ over $\mathsf{RCA}_0$.

Abstract:To the best of our knowledge, a complete characterization of the domains that escape the famous Arrow's impossibility theorem remains an open question. We believe that different ways of proving Arrovian theorems illuminate this problem. This paper presents a new combinatorial topology proof of Arrow's theorem. In PODC 2022, Rajsbaum and Raventós-Pujol proved this theorem using a combinatorial topology approach. This approach uses simplicial complexes to represent the sets of profiles of preferences and that of single preferences. These complexes grow in dimension with the number of alternatives. This makes it difficult to think about the geometry of Arrow's theorem when there are (any) finite number of voters and alternatives. Rajsbaum and Raventós-Pujol (2022) use their combinatorial topology approach only for the base case of two voters and three alternatives and then proceed by induction to prove the general version. The problem with this strategy is that it is unclear how to study domain restrictions in the general case by focusing on the base case and then using induction. Instead, the present article uses the two-dimensional structure of the high-dimensional simplicial complexes (formally, the $2$$\unicode{x2013}$skeleton), yielding a new combinatorial topology proof of this theorem. Moreover, we do not assume the unrestricted domain, but a domain restriction that we call the class of polarization and diversity over triples, which includes the unrestricted domain. By doing so, we obtain a new generalization of Arrow's theorem. This shows that the combinatorial topology approach can be used to study domain restrictions in high dimensions through the $2$$\unicode{x2013}$skeleton.

Abstract:Arrow's `impossibility' theorem asserts that there are no satisfactory methods of aggregating individual preferences into collective preferences in many complex situations. This result has ramifications in economics, politics, i.e., the theory of voting, and the structure of tournaments. By identifying the objects of choice with mathematical sets, and preferences with Hausdorff measures of the distances between sets, it is possible to extend Arrow's arguments from a sociological to a mathematical setting. One consequence is that notions of reversibility can be expressed in terms of the relative configurations of patterns of sets.

Abstract:The traditional Arrow--Sen Social Choice Theory $\bf{TSCT}$ is a mathematical theory built apparently on higher--order formal language. In this paper, we propose a reformulation and reclassification of the $\bf{TSCT}$ axioms in order to obtain a simpler theory based on the first--order language axioms, keeping the spirit of original ideas. This new theory, called Simplified Social Choice Theory, denoted by $\bf{SSCT}$, presents a sub--theory of $\bf{TSCT}$. Roughly speaking, we extract all quatifications over $n$--tuples of binary relations from the axioms of $\bf{TSCT}$ and move them to the meta--level obtaining a sub--theory $\bf{SSCT}$ of $\bf{TSCT}$. More accurately, we assign to each traditional higher--order axiom $\bf{TA}$ its simplified first--order version $\bf{SA}$ such that $\bf{TA}\vdash\bf{SA}$, i.e. $\bf{SA}$ can be logically derived from $\bf{TA}$. In this way we define a simpler and more accessible set of principles that provide a context in which we can prove many propositions analogous to well--known theorems including the Arrow's impossibility of Paretian non--dictatorship and Sen's impossibility of Paretian liberal. These simplifications are the result of decades of lecturing by the author with the aim of bridging the barriers between this beautiful complex theory and his students.

Abstract:Condorcet exposed a limitation of majority-based pairwise comparison by showing that, for specific preference profiles over three alternatives, it leads to a contradiction. Arrow's theorem is often introduced as a generalization of this finding. A novel formulation of the proof is presented that strictly adheres to this logic, establishing that for any non-dictatorial social choice rule, a contradiction-generating preference profile always exists and can be identified using a straightforward procedure.

Escaping Arrow's Theorem: The Advantage-Standard Model

Abstract:There is an extensive literature in social choice theory studying the consequences of weakening the assumptions of Arrow's Impossibility Theorem. Much of this literature suggests that there is no escape from Arrow-style impossibility theorems, while remaining in an ordinal preference setting, unless one drastically violates the Independence of Irrelevant Alternatives (IIA). In this paper, we present a more positive outlook. We propose a model of comparing candidates in elections, which we call the Advantage-Standard (AS) model. The requirement that a collective choice rule (CCR) be representable by the AS model captures a key insight of IIA but is weaker than IIA; yet it is stronger than what is known in the literature as weak IIA (two profiles alike on $x,y$ cannot have opposite strict social preferences on $x$ and $y$). In addition to motivating violations of IIA, the AS model makes intelligible violations of another Arrovian assumption: the negative transitivity of the strict social preference relation $P$. While previous literature shows that only weakening IIA to weak IIA or only weakening negative transitivity of $P$ to acyclicity still leads to impossibility theorems, we show that jointly weakening IIA to AS representability and weakening negative transitivity of $P$ leads to no such impossibility theorems. Indeed, we show that several appealing CCRs are AS representable, including even transitive CCRs.

Arrow's Impossibility Theorem: Computability in Social Choice Theory

Abstract:Arrow's Impossibility Theorem establishes bounds on what we can require from voting systems. Given satisfaction of a small collection of "fairness" axioms, it shows votes can only exist as dictatorships in which one voter determines all outcomes. Votes are modelled as maps from a collection of partial orders, the preferences of voters, to a single verdict which is another aggregated partial ordering. This result is classic and has an extension called the Possibility Theorem that shows these dictatorships needn't exist with infinite voter sets. Mihara extends this work by examining the computability of each of these results. He found that the only voting systems that are in any sense computable are necessarily dictatorial, which takes away from the usefulness of the Possibility Theorem. In this paper we primarily survey the results of Mihara, focusing not on applied consequences, as much of the surrounding literature does, but going into greater details on the underlying Mathematics and Computability of the proofs. We give detailed exposition on the methods used and introduce all notation. We first see complete proofs of the classical results and a sufficient introduction to computability that an unfamiliar reader should be able to follow without prior knowledge of the field. We then expand into Mihara's results, and using our established knowledge of computability show the problems with trying to compute non-dictatorial social welfare functions. This involves introducing an extended definition of computability called pairwise computability.

Abstract:Problems with majority voting over pairs as represented by Arrow's Theoremand those of finding the lengths of closed paths as captured by the Traveling Salesperson Problem (TSP) appear to have nothing in common. In fact, they are connected. As shown, pairwise voting and a version of the TSP share the same domain where each system can be simplified by restricting it to complementary regions to eliminate extraneous terms. Central for doing so is the Borda Count, where it is shown that its outcome most accurately refects the voter preferences.

Abstract:The Gibbard-Satterthwaite Theorem is a landmark result in both social choice theory and implemen- tation theory, as it bridges normative and strategic analysis of voting problems. The theorem states that any social choice function that is strategy-proof and onto is also dictatorial. In this paper, we provide a computer-aided inductive proof for the theorem. We first show that this result holds if and only if it holds for the base case where there are exactly 2 agents and 3 alternatives. We then verify the base case using a computer program. This Proof strategy turns out to be very general. We have used it to prove Arrow's impossibility theorem, and we believe it can be used to prove other theorems as well.

Abstract:The Muller-Satterthwaite theorem states that social choice functions that satisfy unanimity and monotonicity are also dictatorial. Unlike Arrow’s theorem, it does not assume that the function produces a transitive social ordering. Wilson showed that a voting process under Arrow’s conditions can be interpreted as a strong and proper simple game—as defined by von Neumann and Morgenstern. We show this to be the case also under the Muller-Satterthwaite conditions. Our main theorem, which we prove using two very different approaches—one partially automated and one manual—is that a winning coalition coincides with a blocking coalition under unanimity and monotonicity. This might be of independent interest. We also show that this can be used to generate a short proof of the Muller-Satterthwaite theorem.

Abstract:The Duggan-Schwartz theorem (Duggan and Schwartz, 1992) is a famous result concerning strategy-proof social choice correspondences, often stated as "A social choice correspondence that can be manipulated by neither an optimist nor a pessimist has a weak dictator". However, this formulation is actually due to Taylor (2002), and the original theorem, at face value, looks rather different. In this note we show that the two are in fact equivalent.

We show that the Arrowian dictator is equivalent to the perfect cloning circuit. We present \textit{Gedankenexperiment} of voting and Bell-like inequalities of voting. Abstract:This paper provides a general framework to explore the possibility of agenda manipulation-proof and proper consensus-based preference aggregation rules, so powerfully called in doubt by a disputable if widely shared understanding of Arrow's `general possibility theorem'. We consider two alternative versions of agenda manipulation-proofness for social welfare functions, that are distinguished by `parallel' vs. `sequential' execution of agenda formation and preference elicitation, respectively. Under the `parallel' version, it is shown that a large class of anonymous and idempotent social welfare functions that satisfy both agenda manipulation-proofness and strategy-proofness on a natural domain of single-peaked `meta-preferences' induced by arbitrary total preference preorders are indeed available. It is only under the second, `sequential' version that agenda manipulation-proofness on the same natural domain of single-peaked `meta-preferences' is in fact shown to be tightly related to the classic Arrowian `independence of irrelevant alternatives' (IIA) for social welfare functions. In particular, it is shown that using IIA to secure such `sequential' version of agenda manipulation-proofness and combining it with a very minimal requirement of distributed responsiveness results in a characterization of the `global stalemate' social welfare function, the constant function which invariably selects universal social indifference. It is also argued that, altogether, the foregoing results provide new significant insights concerning the actual content and the constructive implications of Arrow's `general possibility theorem' from a mechanism-design perspective.

Representative Social Choice: From Learning Theory to AI Alignment

Abstract:Social choice theory is the study of preference aggregation across a population, used both in mechanism design for human agents and in the democratic alignment of language models. In this study, we propose the representative social choice framework for the modeling of democratic representation in collective decisions, where the number of issues and individuals are too large for mechanisms to consider all preferences directly. These scenarios are widespread in real-world decision-making processes, such as jury trials, indirect elections, legislation processes, corporate governance, and, more recently, language model alignment. In representative social choice, the population is represented by a finite sample of individual-issue pairs based on which social choice decisions are made. We show that many of the deepest questions in representative social choice can be naturally formulated as statistical learning problems, and prove the generalization properties of social choice mechanisms using the theory of machine learning. We further formulate axioms for representative social choice, and prove Arrow-like impossibility theorems with new combinatorial tools of analysis. Our framework introduces the representative approach to social choice, opening up research directions at the intersection of social choice, learning theory, and AI alignment.

Abstract:The Aldous-Hoover Theorem concerns an infinite matrix of random variables whose distribution is invariant under finite permutations of rows and columns. It states that, up to equality in distribution, each random variable in the matrix can be expressed as a function only depending on four key variables: one common to the entire matrix, one that encodes information about its row, one that encodes information about its column, and a fourth one specific to the matrix entry. We state and prove the theorem within a category-theoretic approach to probability, namely the theory of Markov categories. This makes the proof more transparent and intuitive when compared to measure-theoretic ones. A key role is played by a newly identified categorical property, the Cauchy--Schwarz axiom, which also facilitates a new synthetic de Finetti Theorem. We further provide a variant of our proof using the ordered Markov property and the d-separation criterion, both generalized from Bayesian networks to Markov categories. We expect that this approach will facilitate a systematic development of more complex results in the future, such as categorical approaches to hierarchical exchangeability.

Demystifying Arrow of Time

Abstract:Scientific discussions of the arrow of time often get quite confusing due to highly complex systems they deal with. Popular literature then often coveys messages that tend to get lost in translation. The purpose of this note is to demystify the arrow of time by stripping off the unnecessary complexities and thereby simplifying the discussion. We do this by providing examples that are exactly solvable and make it easy to see the root cause of the apparent "time-irreversibility". We also discuss "time-reversal" solutions, where the initial state evolves such that it reaches the state which is the same as the initial state moving backward in time. These solutions are simple enough to be comprehensible to a highschooler. We discuss the arrow of time both in the classical and quantum settings, including in the cosmological context.
