Abstract:We introduce a universal approach for applying the partition rank method, an extension of Tao's slice rank polynomial method, to tensors that are not diagonal. This is accomplished by generalizing Naslund's distinctness indicator to what we call a partition indicator. The advantages of partition indicators are two-fold: they diagonalize tensors that are constant when specified sets of variables are equal, and even in more general settings they can often substantially reduce the partition rank as compared to when a distinctness indicator is applied. The key to our discoveries is integrating the partition rank method with Möbius inversion on the lattice of partitions of a finite set. Through this we unify disparate applications of the partition rank method in the literature. We then use our theory to address a finite field analogue of a question of Erdős, thereby generalizing results of Hart and Iosevich and independently Shparlinski. Furthermore we generalize work of Pach, et al. on bounding sizes of sets avoiding right triangles to bounding sizes of sets avoiding right $k$-configurations.

Abstract:Higher-order notions of Kreweras complementation have appeared in the literature in the works of Krawczyk, Speicher, Mastnak, Nica, Arizmendi, Vargas, and others. While the theory has been developed primarily for specific applications in free probability, it also possesses an elegant, purely combinatorial core that is of independent interest. The present article aims at offering a simple account of various aspects of higher-order Kreweras complementation on the basis of elementary arithmetic, (co)algebraic, categorical and simplicial properties of noncrossing partitions. The main idea is to see noncrossing partitions as providing an interesting noncommutative analogue of the interplay between the divisibility poset and the multiplicative monoid of positive integers. Just as the divisibility poset can be regarded as the decalage of the multiplicative monoid, we exhibit the lattice of noncrossing partitions as the decalage of a partial monoid structure on noncrossing partitions encoding higher-order Kreweras complements. While our results may be considered known, some of the viewpoints can be regarded as novel, providing an efficient approach both conceptually and computationally.

The Distribution of Lattices Arising From Orders In Low Degree Number Fields

Abstract:Orders in number fields provide interesting examples of lattices. We ask: how are lattices arising from orders in number fields distributed? An order $\mathcal{O}$ of absolute discriminant $\Delta$ in a degree $n$ number field has $n$ successive minima $1 = \lambda_0 \leq \lambda_1 \leq \dots \leq \lambda_{n-1}$. For $3 \leq n \leq 5$ and many $G \subseteq S_n$, we compute the distribution of the points $(\log_{ \Delta }\lambda_{1},\dots,\log_{ \Delta }\lambda_{n-1}) \in \mathbb{R}^{n-1}$ as $\mathcal{O}$ ranges across orders in degree $n$ fields with Galois group $G$ as $\Delta \rightarrow \infty$. In many cases, we find that the distribution is given by a piecewise linear expression and is supported on a finite union of polytopes.

Let $W_i,W_j$ be two irreducible subrepresentations of $\overline{\rho}^{ss}$, the semisimplification of the residual representation. We study the structure of the $G$-stable lattices $\Lambda\subseteq K^n$ with a view to understanding the question of when $\rho$ realises a non-split extension of $W_i$ by $W_j$.

Maximal chains in lattices from graph associahedra: Tamari to the weak order

Abstract:In this paper, we study the maximal chains of lattices which generalizes both the weak order and the Tamari lattice: certain lattices of maximal tubings. A maximal tubing poset $\mathfrak{L}(G)$ is defined for any graph $G$, but for the graphs we consider in this paper, the poset is a lattice. Just as the weak order is an orientation of the $1$-skeleton of the permutahedron and the Tamari of the associahedron, each tubing lattice is an orientation of the $1$-skeleton of a graph associahedron. The partial order on $\mathfrak{L}(G)$ is given by a projection from $\mathfrak{S}_n$ to $\mathfrak{L}(G)$. In particular, when the graph is the complete graph, the graph associahedron is the the permutahedron, and when it is the path graph, it is the Stasheff associahedron. Our main results are for lollipop graphs, graphs that ``interpolate'' between the path and the complete graphs. For lollipop graphs, the lattices consist of permutations which satisfy a generalization of $312$-avoiding. The maximum length chains correspond to partially shiftable tableaux under the Edelman-Greene's Coxeter-Knuth bijection. We also consider functions defined analogously to Stanley's symmetric function for the maximum length chains and find their expansion in terms of Young quasisymmetric Schur functions.

Geometric realizations of the $s$-weak order and its lattice quotients

Abstract:For an $n$-tuple $s$ of non-negative integers, the $s$-weak order is a lattice structure on $s$-trees, generalizing the weak order on permutations. We first describe the join irreducible elements, the canonical join representations, and the forcing order of the $s$-weak order in terms of combinatorial objects, generalizing the arcs, the non-crossing arc diagrams, and the subarc order for the weak order. We then extend the theory of shards and shard polytopes to construct geometric realizations of the $s$-weak order and all its lattice quotients as polyhedral complexes, generalizing the quotient fans and quotientopes of the weak order.

Abstract:In a 2022 paper, Dawsey, Just and the present author prove that the set of integer partitions, taken as a monoid under a partition multiplication operation I defined in my Ph.D. work, is isomorphic to the positive integers as a monoid under integer multiplication. In this note, I extend partition multiplication to the set of overpartitions, which are of much interest in partition theory. I prove the overpartitions form an Abelian group under partition multiplication. Moreover, the overpartitions and the positive rational numbers are isomorphic as multiplicative groups. I then prove further overpartition isomorphisms and discuss approaches to a ring theory of overpartitions.

Abstract:In this note we observe that a bijection related to Littelmann's root operators (for type $A_1$) transparently explains the well known enumeration by length of walks on $\N$ (left factors of Dyck paths), as well as some other enumerative coincidences. We indicate a relation with bijective solutions of Bertrand's ballot problem: those can be mechanically transformed into bijective proofs of the mentioned enumeration formula.

Simpler characterizations of total orderization invariant maps

Abstract:Given a finite subset $A$ of a distributive lattice, its total orderization $to(A)$ is a natural transformation of $A$ into a totally ordered set. Recently, the author showed that multivariate maps on distributive lattices which remain invariant under total orderizations generalize various maps on vector lattices, including bounded orthosymmetric multilinear maps and finite sums of bounded orthogonally additive polynomials. Therefore, a study of total orderization invariant maps on distributive lattices provides new perspectives for maps widely researched in vector lattice theory. However, the unwieldy notation of total orderizations can make calculations extremely long and difficult. In this paper we resolve this complication by providing considerably simpler characterizations of total orderization maps. Utilizing these easier representations, we then prove that a lattice multi-homomorphism on a distributive lattice is total orderization invariant if and only if it is symmetric, and we show that the diagonal of a symmetric lattice multi-homomorphism is a lattice homomorphism, extending known results for orthosymmetric vector lattice homomorphisms.

For example, the lattice is rank-symmetric and enumerated by the Catalan numbers. In this article, we introduce a large family of new noncrossing partition lattices with both of these properties, each parametrized by a configuration of n points in the plane.

A Generalization of Arrow's Impossibility Theorem Through Combinatorial Topology

Abstract:To the best of our knowledge, a complete characterization of the domains that escape the famous Arrow's impossibility theorem remains an open question. We believe that different ways of proving Arrovian theorems illuminate this problem. This paper presents a new combinatorial topology proof of Arrow's theorem. In PODC 2022, Rajsbaum and Raventós-Pujol proved this theorem using a combinatorial topology approach. This approach uses simplicial complexes to represent the sets of profiles of preferences and that of single preferences. These complexes grow in dimension with the number of alternatives. This makes it difficult to think about the geometry of Arrow's theorem when there are (any) finite number of voters and alternatives. Rajsbaum and Raventós-Pujol (2022) use their combinatorial topology approach only for the base case of two voters and three alternatives and then proceed by induction to prove the general version. The problem with this strategy is that it is unclear how to study domain restrictions in the general case by focusing on the base case and then using induction. Instead, the present article uses the two-dimensional structure of the high-dimensional simplicial complexes (formally, the $2$$\unicode{x2013}$skeleton), yielding a new combinatorial topology proof of this theorem. Moreover, we do not assume the unrestricted domain, but a domain restriction that we call the class of polarization and diversity over triples, which includes the unrestricted domain. By doing so, we obtain a new generalization of Arrow's theorem. This shows that the combinatorial topology approach can be used to study domain restrictions in high dimensions through the $2$$\unicode{x2013}$skeleton.

Abstract:The most studied class of Condorcet domains (acyclic sets of linear orders) is the class of peak-pit domains of maximal width. It has a number of combinatorial representations by such familiar combinatorial objects like rhombus tilings and arrangements of pseudolines. Arrow's single-peaked domains are peak-pit but do not have maximal width. We suggest how to represent them by means of generalised arrangements of pseudolines.

Abstract:In this paper, we study Artinian and Noetherian properties in vector lattices and provide a concrete representation of these spaces. Furthermore, we describe for which Archimedean uniformly complete vector lattices every decreasing sequence of prime ideals is stationary (a property that we refer to as prime Artinian). We also completely characterize the prime ideals in vector lattices of continuous root functions and piecewise polynomials. This is a useful space for studying how having decreasing stationary sequences of prime ideals does not imply having increasing stationary sequences of prime ideals, and vice versa.

Abstract:In this paper, we continue investigation of the lateral order on vector lattices started in [25]. We consider the complexification EC$E_{\mathbb {C}}$ of a real vector lattice E and introduce the lateral order on EC$E_{\mathbb {C}}$. Our first main result asserts that the set of all fragments Fv$\mathfrak {F}_v$ of an element v & ISIN;EC$v\in E_{\mathbb {C}}$ of the complexification of an uniformly complete vector lattice E is a Boolean algebra. Then, we study narrow operators defined on the complexification EC$E_{\mathbb {C}}$ of a vector lattice E, extending the results of articles [22, 27, 28] to the setting of operators defined on complex vector lattices. We prove that every order-to-norm continuous linear operator T:EC & RARR;X$\mathcal {T}: E_{\mathbb {C}} \rightarrow X$ from the complexification EC$E_{\mathbb {C}}$ of an atomless Dedekind complete vector lattice E to a finite-dimensional Banach space X is strictly narrow. Then, we prove that every C-compact order-to-norm continuous linear operator T$\mathcal {T}$ from EC$E_{\mathbb {C}}$ to a Banach space X is narrow. We also show that every regular order-no-norm continuous linear operator from EC$E_{\mathbb {C}}$ to a complex Banach lattice (lp(D)C$(\ell _p(\mathcal {D})_{\mathbb {C}}$ is narrow. Finally, in the last part of the paper we investigate narrow operators taking values in symmetric ideals of compact operators.
Composition series of arbitrary cardinality in modular lattices and abelian categories

Abstract:For a certain family of complete modular lattices, we prove a Jordan--Hölder--Scheier-like" theorem with no assumptions on cardinality or well-orderedness. This family includes both lattices which are both join- and meet-continuous, as well as the lattices of subobjects of any object in an abelian category satisfying properties related to Grothendieck's axioms (AB5) and (AB5*). We then give several examples of objects in abelian categories which satisfy these axioms, including pointwise finite-dimensional persistence modules, presheaves, and certain Prüfer modules. Moreover, we show that, over an arbitrary ring, the infinite product of isomorphic simple modules both fails to satisfy our axioms and admits at least two composition series with distinct cardinalities. We conclude by giving a lattice-theoretic proof that any object which is locally finitely generated and satisfies our axioms can be expressed as a direct sum of indecomposable subobjects. We conjecture that this decomposition is unique.

Abstract:Abstract In this paper, we introduce a notion of ladder representations for split odd special orthogonal groups and symplectic groups over a non-archimedean local field of characteristic zero. This is a natural class in the admissible dual, which contains both strongly positive discrete series representations and irreducible representations with irreducible $A$-parameters. We compute Jacquet modules and the Aubert duals of ladder representations, and we establish a formula for describing ladder representations in terms of linear combinations of standard modules.

Abstract:For a subfamily ${F}\subseteq 2^{[n]}$ of the Boolean lattice, consider the graph $G_{F}$ on ${F}$ based on the pairwise inclusion relations among its members. Given a positive integer $t$, how large can ${F}$ be before $G_{F}$ must contain some component of order greater than $t$? For $t=1$, this question was answered exactly almost a century ago by Sperner: the size of a middle layer of the Boolean lattice. For $t=2^n$, this question is trivial. We are interested in what happens between these two extremes. For $t=2^{g}$ with $g=g(n)$ being any integer function that satisfies $g(n)=o(n/\log n)$ as $n\to\infty$, we give an asymptotically sharp answer to the above question: not much larger than the size of a middle layer. This constitutes a nontrivial generalisation of Sperner's theorem. We do so by a reduction to a Turán-type problem for rainbow cycles in properly edge-coloured graphs. Among other results, we also give a sharp answer to the question, how large can ${F}$ be before $G_{F}$ must be connected?

Abstract:In this paper, we consider the subdivision map between two KLRW algebras of type $A^{(1)}_e$ and $A^{(1)}_{e+1}$. We show that the image of an idempotent indexed by a partition under this map is still an idempotent indexed by a partition, and give the form of this new partition. Moreover, we give an equality of some graded decomposition numbers.
