Abstract:The most studied class of Condorcet domains (acyclic sets of linear orders) is the class of peak-pit domains of maximal width. It has a number of combinatorial representations by such familiar combinatorial objects like rhombus tilings and arrangements of pseudolines. Arrow's single-peaked domains are peak-pit but do not have maximal width. We suggest how to represent them by means of generalised arrangements of pseudolines.

A Generalization of Arrow's Impossibility Theorem Through Combinatorial Topology

Abstract:To the best of our knowledge, a complete characterization of the domains that escape the famous Arrow's impossibility theorem remains an open question. We believe that different ways of proving Arrovian theorems illuminate this problem. This paper presents a new combinatorial topology proof of Arrow's theorem. In PODC 2022, Rajsbaum and Raventós-Pujol proved this theorem using a combinatorial topology approach. This approach uses simplicial complexes to represent the sets of profiles of preferences and that of single preferences. These complexes grow in dimension with the number of alternatives. This makes it difficult to think about the geometry of Arrow's theorem when there are (any) finite number of voters and alternatives. Rajsbaum and Raventós-Pujol (2022) use their combinatorial topology approach only for the base case of two voters and three alternatives and then proceed by induction to prove the general version. The problem with this strategy is that it is unclear how to study domain restrictions in the general case by focusing on the base case and then using induction. Instead, the present article uses the two-dimensional structure of the high-dimensional simplicial complexes (formally, the $2$$\unicode{x2013}$skeleton), yielding a new combinatorial topology proof of this theorem. Moreover, we do not assume the unrestricted domain, but a domain restriction that we call the class of polarization and diversity over triples, which includes the unrestricted domain. By doing so, we obtain a new generalization of Arrow's theorem. This shows that the combinatorial topology approach can be used to study domain restrictions in high dimensions through the $2$$\unicode{x2013}$skeleton.

Abstract:Problems with majority voting over pairs as represented by Arrow's Theoremand those of finding the lengths of closed paths as captured by the Traveling Salesperson Problem (TSP) appear to have nothing in common. In fact, they are connected. As shown, pairwise voting and a version of the TSP share the same domain where each system can be simplified by restricting it to complementary regions to eliminate extraneous terms. Central for doing so is the Borda Count, where it is shown that its outcome most accurately refects the voter preferences.

Abstract:In nature and society, most of competitions take place on the boundaries among a group of domains where different individuals or colonies share common resources; therefore, it is widely believed that domain boundaries play important roles in the evolution of many complex systems. Here, we first give a definition for multiorder boundaries among discrete domains and then propose a general method to calculate their relative fractal dimension, i.e., the ratio of the fractal dimension of the boundaries versus that of the domains themselves. Through analyzing three types of real-world discrete domains, several interesting results are revealed. For example, the limitation on the number of domains that an individual can join in may produce longer boundaries indicating more cruel competitions among the domains. Besides, the individuals with more social links are always considered more important in social networks, and it is found that these individuals as valuable resources of social domains are always centralized on the boundaries of higher order.

Abstract:This paper initiates the reverse mathematics of social choice theory, studying Arrow's impossibility theorem and related results including Fishburn's possibility theorem and the Kirman--Sondermann theorem within the framework of reverse mathematics. We formalise fundamental notions of social choice theory in second-order arithmetic, yielding a definition of countable society which is tractable in $\mathsf{RCA}_0$. We then show that the Kirman--Sondermann analysis of social welfare functions can be carried out in $\mathsf{RCA}_0$. This approach yields a proof of Arrow's theorem in $\mathsf{RCA}_0$, and thus in $\mathrm{PRA}$, since Arrow's theorem can be formalised as a $\Pi^0_1$ sentence. Finally we show that Fishburn's possibility theorem for countable societies is equivalent to $\mathsf{ACA}_0$ over $\mathsf{RCA}_0$.

Abstract:This paper is a continuation of a project to determine which skew polynomial algebras $S = R[\theta; \alpha]$ satisfy property $(\diamond)$, namely that the injective hull of every simple $S$-module is locally artinian, where $k$ is a field, $R$ is a commutative noetherian $k$-algebra, and $\alpha$ is a $k$-algebra automorphism of $R$. Earlier work (which we review) and further analysis done here leads us to focus on the case where $S$ is a primitive domain and $R$ has Krull dimension 1 and contains an uncountable field. Then we show first that if $|\mathrm{Spec}(R)|$ is infinite then $S$ does not satisfy $(\diamond)$. Secondly we show that when $R = k[X]_{<X>}$ and $\alpha (X) = qX$ where $q \in k \setminus \{0\}$ is not a root of unity then $S$ does not satisfy $(\diamond)$. This is in complete contrast to our earlier result that, when $R = k[[X]]$ and $\alpha$ is an arbitrary $k$-algebra automorphism of infinite order, $S$ satisfies $(\diamond)$. A number of open questions are stated.

Abstract:In this article, we are concerned with the study of the dimension theory of tensor products of algebras over a field k. We introduce and investigate the notion of generalized AF-domain (GAF-domain for short) and prove that any k-algebra A such that the polynomial ring in one variable A[X] is an AF-domain is in fact a GAF-domain, in particular any AF-domain is a GAF-domain. Moreover, we compute the Krull dimension of A⊗ k B for any k-algebra A such that A[X] is an AF-domain and any k-algebra B generalizing the main theorem of Wadsworth in [16].

Abstract:We consider the problem of dividing one unit of an infinitely divisible object among a finite number of agents. We provide a characterization of all single-peaked domains on which the uniform rule is the unique division rule satisfying efficiency, strategy-proofness, and equal treatment of equals (ETE). Next, we consider non-single-peaked domains and provide a characterization of all such domains on which the uniform rule satisfies efficiency, strategy-proofness, and ETE. We also show that under some mild richness conditions the uniform rule is the unique rule satisfying the mentioned properties on these domains. Finally, we provide a wide range of applications to justify the usefulness of our results.

Two generalizations of Krull domains

Abstract:In this paper we introduce two new generalizations of Krull domains: $\ast$-almost independent rings of Krull type ($\ast$-almost IRKTs) and $\ast$-almost generalized Krull domains ($\ast$-AGKDs), neither of which need be integrally closed. We characterize them using certain types of $\ast$-homogeneous ideals. To do this we introduce $\ast$-almost super-homogeneous ideals and $\ast$-almost super-SH domains. We prove that a domain $D$ is a $\ast$-almost IRKT if and only if $D$ is a $\ast$-almost super-SH domain and that a domain is a $\ast$-AGKD if and only if $D$ is a type 1 $\ast$-almost super-SH domain. Further, we study $\ast$-almost factorial general-SH domains ($\ast$-afg SH domains) and we prove that a domain $D$ is a $\ast$-afg-SH domain if and only if $D$ is a $\ast$-IRKT and an AGCD-domain.

Non-Borda elections under relaxed IIA conditions

Abstract:Arrow's celebrated Impossibility Theorem asserts that an election rule, or Social Welfare Function (SWF), between three or more candidates meeting a set of strict criteria cannot exist. Maskin suggests that Arrow's conditions for SWFs are too strict. In particular he weakens the "Independence of Irrelevant Alternatives" condition (IIA), which states that if in two elections, each voter's binary preference between candidates $c_i$ and $c_j$ is the same, then the two results must agree on their preference between $c_i$ and $c_j$. Instead, he proposes a modified IIA condition (MIIA). Under this condition, the result between $c_i$ and $c_j$ can be affected not just by the order of $c_i$ and $c_j$ in each voter's ranking, but also the number of candidates between them. More candidates between $c_i$ and $c_j$ communicates some information about the strength of a voter's preference between the two candidates, and Maskin argues that it should be admissible evidence in deciding on a final ranking. We construct SWFs for three-party elections which meet the MIIA criterion along with other sensibility criteria, but are far from being Borda elections (where each voter assigns a score to each candidate linearly according to their ranking). On the other hand, we give cases in which any SWF must be the Borda rule.

Abstract:Arrow's `impossibility' theorem asserts that there are no satisfactory methods of aggregating individual preferences into collective preferences in many complex situations. This result has ramifications in economics, politics, i.e., the theory of voting, and the structure of tournaments. By identifying the objects of choice with mathematical sets, and preferences with Hausdorff measures of the distances between sets, it is possible to extend Arrow's arguments from a sociological to a mathematical setting. One consequence is that notions of reversibility can be expressed in terms of the relative configurations of patterns of sets.

Abstract:Fishburn's alternating scheme domains occupy a special place in the theory of Condorcet domains. Karpov (2023) generalised these domains and made an interesting observation proving that all of them are single-peaked on a circle. However, an important point that all generalised Fishburn domains are maximal Condorcet domain remained unproved. We fill this gap and suggest a new combinatorial interpretation of generalised Fishburn's domains which provide a constructive proof of single-peakedness of these domains on a circle. We show that classical single-peaked domains and single-dipped domains as well as Fishburn's alternating scheme domains belong to this family of domains while single-crossing domains do not.

Abstract:Abstract This paper examines the comparative properties of voting rules based on the richness of their ballot spaces, assuming a given distribution of voting rights. We focus on how well voting rules aggregate the information dispersed among voters. We consider how different voting rules affect both voters’ decisions at the voting stage and the incentives of the agenda-setter who decides whether to put the proposal to a vote. Without agenda-setter, the voting efficiency of rules is higher when their ballot space is richer. Moreover, full-information efficiency requires full divisibility of the votes. In the presence of an agenda-setter, we uncover a novel trade-off: in some cases, rules with high voting efficiency provide worse incentives to the agenda-setter to select good proposals. This negative effect can be large enough to wash out the higher voting efficiency of even the most efficient rules.

Abstract:In the field of Judgment Aggrgation, a domain, that is a subset of a Cartesian power of $\{0,1\}$, is considered to reflect abstract rationality restrictions on vectors of two-valued judgments on a number of issues. We are interested in the ways we can aggregate the positions of a set of individuals, whose positions over each issue form vectors of the domain, by means of unanimous (idempotent) functions, whose output is again an element of the domain. Such functions are called non-dictatorial, when their output is not simply the positions of a single individual. Here, we consider domains admitting various kinds of non-dictatorial aggregators, which reflect various properties of majority aggregation: (locally) non-dictatorial, generalized dictatorships, anonymous, monotone, StrongDem and systematic. We show that interesting and, in some sense, democratic voting schemes are always provided by domains that can be described by propositional formulas of specific syntactic types we define. Furthermore, we show that we can efficiently recognize such formulas and that, given a domain, we can both efficiently check if it is described by such a formula and, in case it is, construct it. Our results fall in the realm of classical results concerning the syntactic characterization of domains with specific closure properties, like domains closed under logical AND which are the models of Horn formulas. The techniques we use to obtain our results draw from judgment aggregation as well as propositional logic and universal algebra.

Two improvements in Birch's theorem on forms

Abstract:Let $K$ be a Birch field, that is, a field for which every diagonal form of odd degree in sufficiently many variables admits a non-zero solution; for example, $K$ could be the field of rational numbers. Let $f_1, \ldots, f_r$ be homogeneous forms of odd degree over $K$ in $n$ variables, and let $Z$ be the variety they cut out. Birch proved if $n$ is sufficiently large then $Z(K)$ contains a non-zero point. We prove two results which show that $Z(K)$ is actually quite large. First, the Zariski closure of $Z(K)$ has bounded codimension in $\mathbf{A}^n$. And second, if the $f_i$'s have sufficiently high strength then $Z(K)$ is in fact Zariski dense in $Z$. The proofs use recent results on strength, and our methods build on recent work of Bik, Draisma, and Snowden, which established similar improvements to Brauer's theorem on forms.

Good election rules with more than three candidates are Borda

Abstract:Arrow proved that for three or more candidates, the IIA condition is enough to forbid all non-dictatorial election rules (or Social Welfare Functions). Maskin introduced the weaker MIIA condition, which permits the ``Borda'' election rules where each voter assigns points linearly to each candidate according to their order of preference. However, in previous work we demonstrated that there exist Social Welfare Functions between three candidates and satisfying the MIIA condition which are far from being Borda rules. We demonstrate that this phenomenon is unique to the case of three candidates. As soon as a fourth candidate is introduced, and indeed for any larger number of candidates, the only good election rules are the unweighted Borda rules.

Bipartite peak-pit domains

Abstract:In this paper, we introduce the class of bipartite peak-pit domains. This is a class of Condorcet domains which include both the classical single-peaked and single-dipped domains. Our class of domains can be used to model situations where some alternatives are ranked based on a most preferred location on a societal axis, and some are ranked based on a least preferred location. This makes it possible to model situations where agents have different rationales for their ranking depending on which of two subclasses of the alternatives one is considering belong to. The class of bipartite peak-pit domains includes most peak-pit domains for $n\leq 7$ alternatives, and the largest Condorcet domains for each $n\leq 8$. In order to study the maximum possible size of a bipartite peak-pit domain we introduce set-alternating schemes. This is a method for constructing well-structured peak-pit domains which are copious and connected. We show that domains based on these schemes always have size at least $2^{n-1}$ and some of them have sizes larger than the domains of Fishburn's alternating scheme. We show that the maximum domain size for sufficiently high $n$ exceeds $2.1973^n$. This improves the previous lower bound for peak-pit domains $2.1890^n$ from \cite{karpov2023constructing}, which was also the highest asymptotic lower bound for the size of the largest Condorcet domains.
