Abstract:We show that up to automorphisms of $\mathbb{P}^2_{\mathbb C}$ there are $5$ homogeneous convex foliations of degree four on $\mathbb{P}^2_{\mathbb C}.$ Using this result, we give a partial answer to a question posed in $2013$ by D. {Marín} and J. {Pereira} about the classification of reduced convex foliations on~$\mathbb{P}^2_{\mathbb C}.$

On Poincaré polynomials for plane curves with quasi-homogeneous singularities

Abstract:We define a combinatorial object that can be associated with any conic-line arrangement with ordinary quasi-homogeneous singularities, which we call the combinatorial Poincaré polynomial. We prove a Terao-type factorization statement on the splitting of such a polynomial over the rationals under the assumption that our conic-line arrangements are free. Then we focus on the so-called $d$-arrangements in the plane. In particular, we provide a combinatorial constraint for free $d$-arrangements admitting ordinary quasi-homogeneous singularities.

On the affine geometry of congruences of lines

Abstract:Congruences, or $2$-parameter families of lines in $3$-space are of interest in many situations, in particular in geometric optics. In this paper we consider elements of their geometry which are invariant under affine changes of co-ordinates, for example that associated with their focal sets, and less well studied focal planes. We use tools from singularity theory to describe some generic phenomena. In particular we determine the generic singularities of various surfaces in affine 3-space associated to these congruences. We identify a projective quadric in the projectivised tangent space to the manifold of lines which plays a key role in understanding the affine geometry of ruled surfaces, congruences and $3$-parameter families or complexes. Many of the results generalise to lines in $\mathbb R^n, n>3$.

Abstract:We first describe, over a field K of characteristic different from 2, the orbits for the adjoint actions of the Lie groups PGL(2, K) and PSL(2, K) on their Lie algebra sl(2, K). While the former are well known, the latter lead to the resolution of generalised Pell-Fermat equations which characterise the corresponding orbit. The synthetic approach enables to change the base field, and we illustrate this picture over the fields with three and five elements, in relation with the geometry of the tetrahedral and icosahedral groups. While the results may appear familiar, they do not seem to be covered in such generality or detail by the existing literature. We apply this discussion to partition the set of PSL(2, Z)-classes of integral binary quadratic forms into groups of PSL(2, K)-classes. When K = C we obtain the class groups of a given discriminant. Then we provide a complete description of their partition into PSL(2, Q)-classes in terms of Hilbert symbols, and relate this to the partition into genera. The results are classical, but our geometrical approach is of independent interest as it may yield new insights into the geometry of Gauss composition, and unify the picture over function fields. Finally we provide a geometric interpretation in the modular orbifold PSL(2, Z) \ H for when two points or two closed geodesics correspond to PSL(2, K)-equivalent quadratic forms, in terms of hyperbolic distances and angles between those modular cycles. These geometric quantities are related to linking numbers of modular knots. Their distribution properties could be studied using the geometry of the quadratic lattice (sl(2, Z), det) but such investigations are not pursued here.

When Grünbaum meets Poncelet -- Infinite Classes of Movable $n_4$ Configurations

Abstract:We study relations between $(n_4)$ incidence configurations and the classical Poncelet Porism. Poncelet's result studies two conics and a sequence of points and lines that inscribes one conic and circumscribes the other. Poncelet's Porism states that whether this sequence closes up after $m$ steps only depends on the conics and not on the initial point of the sequence. In other words: Poncelet polygons are movable. We transfer this motion into a flexibility statement about a large class of $(n_4)$ configurations, which are configurations where 4 (straight) lines pass through each point and four points lie on each line. A first instance of such configurations in real geometry had been given by Grünbaum and Rigby in their classical 1990 paper where they constructed the first known real geometric realisation of a well known combinatorial $(21_4)$ configuration (which had been studied by Felix Klein), now called the Grünbaum-Rigby configuration. Since then, there has been an intensive search for movable $(n_4)$ configurations, but it is very surprising that the Grünbaum-Rigby $(21_4)$ configuration admits nontrivial motions. It is well-known that the Grünbaum-Rigby configuration is the smallest example of an infinite class of $(n_4)$ configurations, the trivial celestial configurations. A major result of this paper is that we show that all trivial celestial configurations are movable via Poncelet's Porism and results about properties of Poncelet grids. Alternative approaches via geometry of billiards, in-circle nets, and pentagram maps that relate the subject to discrete integrable systems are given as well.

Geometric Structures on the Complement of a Projective Arrangement

Abstract:Consider a complex projective space with its Fubini-Study metric. We study certain one parameter deformations of this metric on the complement of an arrangement (= finite union of hyperplanes) whose Levi-Civita connection is of Dunkl type. Interesting examples are obtained from the arrangements defined by finite complex reflection groups. We determine a parameter interval for which the metric is locally of Fubini-Study type, flat, or complex-hyperbolic. We find a finite subset of this interval for which we get a complete orbifold or at least a Zariski open subset thereof, and we analyze these cases in some detail (e.g., we determine their orbifold fundamental group). In this set-up, the principal results of Deligne-Mostow on the Lauricella hypergeometric differential equation and work of Barthel-Hirzebruch-Höfer on arrangements in a projective plane appear as special cases. Along the way we produce in a geometric manner all the pairs of complex reflection groups with isomorphic discriminants, thus providing a uniform approach to work of Orlik-Solomon.

Abstract:Given a ternary homogeneous polynomial, the fixed points of the map from $\mathbb{P}^2$ to itself defined by its gradient are called its eigenpoints. We focus on cubic polynomials, and analyze configurations of eigenpoints that admit one or more alignments. We give a classification and explicit equations, in the coordinates of the points, of all configurations: this is accomplished by using both geometric techniques and by an extensive use of computer algebra.

Abstract:We introduce a novel definition of orientation on the triples of a family of pairwise intersecting planar convex sets and study its properties. In particular, we compare it to other systems of orientations on triples that satisfy a so-called interiority condition: $\circlearrowleft(ABD)=~\circlearrowleft(BCD)=~\circlearrowleft(CAD)=1$ imply $\circlearrowleft(ABC)=1$ for any $A,B,C,D$. We call such an orientation a P3O (partial 3-order), a natural generalization of a poset, that has several interesting special cases. For example, the order type of a planar point set (that can have collinear triples) is a P3O; we denote a P3O realizable by points as p-P3O. If we do not allow $\circlearrowleft(ABC)=0$, we obtain a T3O (total 3-order). Contrary to linear orders, a T3O can have a rich structure. A T3O realizable by points, a p-T3O, is the order type of a point set in general position. Despite these similarities to order types, P3O and p-T3O that can arise from the orientation of pairwise intersecting convex sets, denoted by C-P3O and C-T3O, turn out to be quite different from order types: there is no containment relation among the family of all C-P3O's and the family of all p-P3O's, or among the families of C-T3O's and p-T3O's. Finally, we study properties of these orientations if we also require that the family of underlying convex sets satisfies the (4,3) property.

Abstract:We observe that Hall's free projective extension $P \mapsto F(P)$ of partial planes is a Borel map, and use a modification of the construction introduced in [9] to conclude that the class of countable non-Desarguesian projective planes is Borel complete. In the process, we also rediscover the main result of [7] on the realizability of every group as the group of collineations of some projective plane. Finally, we use classical results of projective geometry to prove that the class of countable Pappian projective planes is Borel complete.

Abstract:It is a classical result that there are $12$ (irreducible) rational cubic curves through $8$ generic points in $\mathbb{P}_{\mathbb{C}}^2$, but little is known about the non-generic cases. The space of $8$-point configurations is partitioned into strata depending on combinatorial objects we call quatroids, a higher-order version of representable matroids. We compute all $779777$ quatroids on eight distinct points in the plane, which produces a full description of the stratification. For each stratum, we generate several invariants, including the number of rational cubics through a generic configuration. As a byproduct of our investigation, we obtain a collection of results regarding the base loci of pencils of cubics and positive certificates for non-rationality.

Abstract:Following our previous work, we develop an algorithm to compute a presentation of the fundamental group of certain partial compactifications of the complement of a complex arrangement of lines in the projective plane. It applies, in particular, to homology planes arising from arrangements of lines. This permits to determine the infinitude of the fundamental group of homology planes of log-general type that may be the first examples of this type.

Abstract:We study the problem of classifying the lines of the projective $3$-space $PG(3,q)$ over a finite field $GF(q)$ into orbits of the group $G=PGL(2,q)$ of linear symmetries of the twisted cubic $C$. A generic line neither intersects $C$ nor lies in any of its osculating planes. While the non-generic lines have been classified into $G$-orbits in literature, it has been an open problem to classify the generic lines into $G$-orbits. For a general field $F$ of characteristic different from $2$ and $3$, the twisted cubic determines a symplectic polarity on $\mathbb P^3$. In the Klein representation of lines of $\mathbb P^3$, the tangent lines of $C$ are represented by a degree $4$ rational normal curve in a hyperplane $\mathcal H$ of the second exterior power $\mathbb P^5$ of $\mathbb P^3$. Atiyah studied the lines of $\mathbb P^3$ with respect to $C$, in terms of the geometries of these two curves. Polar duality of lines on $\mathbb P^3$ corresponds to Hodge duality on $\mathbb P^5$, and $\mathcal H$ is the hyperplane of Hodge self-dual elements of $\mathbb P^5$. We show that $\mathcal H$ can be identified in a $PGL_2$-equivariant way with the space of binary quartic forms over $F$, and that pairs of polar dual lines of $\mathbb P^3$ correspond to binary quartic forms whose apolar invariant is a square. We first solve the open problem of classifying binary quartic forms over $GF(q)$ into $G$-orbits, and then use it to solve the main problem.

Abstract:In previous paper, the author applied the permanent-determinant method of Kasteleyn and its non-bipartite generalization, the Hafnian-Pfaffian method, to obtain a determinant or a Pfaffian that enumerates each of the ten symmetry classes of plane partitions. After a cosmetic generalization of the Kasteleyn method, we identify the matrices in the four determinantal cases (plain plane partitions, cyclically symmetric plane partitions, transpose-complement plane partitions, and the intersection of the last two types) in the representation theory of sl(2,C). The result is a unified proof of the four enumerations.

Dual relations between line congruences in $\mathbb{R}^3$ and surfaces in $\mathbb{R}^4$

Abstract:There is a natural duality between line congruences in $\mathbb{R}^3$ and surfaces in $\mathbb{R}^4$ that sends principal lines into asymptotic lines. The same correspondence takes the discriminant curve of a line congruence into the parabolic curve of the dual surface. Moreover, it takes the ridge curves to the flat ridge curves, while the subparabolic curves of a line congruence are taken to certain curves on the surface that we call flat subparabolic curves. In this paper, we discuss these relations and describe the generic behavior of the subparabolic curves at the discriminant curve of the line congruence, or equivalently, the parabolic curve of the dual surface. We also discuss Loewner's conjectures under the duality viewpoint.

Abstract:For an odd prime $p$, we determine the $p$-primary component of the Farrell cohomology of the pure mapping class groups of a non orientable surface of genus $p$ with $k\geqslant 1$ marked points. To do this, we classify conjugacy classes of subgroups of order $p$ of the pure mapping class group of a non orientable surface of any genus with marked points. This is obtained by extending the notion of topological equivalence for surface kernel epimorphisms of non Euclidean crystallographic groups, adapting it to the setting of surfaces with marked points.

Abstract:We study pencils of plane cubics with only one base point and general member smooth, giving a complete classification. Under the additional hypothesis that all members are irreducible, we prove that there exists a unique non-isotrivial pencil with these properties up to projective transformation. We compare our construction with the classical approaches given by Gattazzo, Beauville and Miranda-Persson.
