Abstract:There is a natural duality between line congruences in $\mathbb{R}^3$ and surfaces in $\mathbb{R}^4$ that sends principal lines into asymptotic lines. The same correspondence takes the discriminant curve of a line congruence into the parabolic curve of the dual surface. Moreover, it takes the ridge curves to the flat ridge curves, while the subparabolic curves of a line congruence are taken to certain curves on the surface that we call flat subparabolic curves. In this paper, we discuss these relations and describe the generic behavior of the subparabolic curves at the discriminant curve of the line congruence, or equivalently, the parabolic curve of the dual surface. We also discuss Loewner's conjectures under the duality viewpoint.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
This paper attempts to explore the dual relationship between line congruences in three - dimensional space and surfaces in four - dimensional space. Specifically, the author studies how to map the principal lines of line congruences to the asymptotic lines of surfaces, and how this correspondence affects the discriminant curve, ridge curves and subparabolic curves of line congruences. In addition, the paper also discusses the general behavior of these curves near the discriminant curve and explores the implications of the Loewner conjecture from this dual perspective. ### Main problems 1. **Dual relationship**: The paper explores the natural dual relationship between line congruences in three - dimensional space and surfaces in four - dimensional space, especially how to map the principal lines of line congruences to the asymptotic lines of surfaces. 2. **Discriminant curve and ridge curves**: It studies how the discriminant curve of line congruences corresponds to the parabola of the surface, and how the ridge curves correspond to the flat ridge curves. 3. **Behavior of subparabolic curves**: It describes the general behavior of subparabolic curves near the discriminant curve, especially the behavior at the singular points of the discriminant curve. 4. **Loewner conjecture**: It discusses the significance of the Loewner conjecture from the dual perspective, especially regarding the index problems of isolated umbilical points of line congruences and isolated inflection points of surfaces. ### Formulas and definitions - **Representation of line congruences**: \[ F(u, v, t)=f(u, v)+t \xi(u, v), \quad(u, v) \in U, \quad t \in \mathbb{R} \] where \(f: U \subset \mathbb{R}^2 \to \mathbb{R}^3\) is the base point and \(\xi: U \to \mathbb{R}^3\) is the direction vector. - **Support function**: \[ \rho(u, v)=-\nu(u, v) \cdot f(u, v) \] - **Projection subscript**: \[ G(u, v)=(\nu(u, v), \rho(u, v)) \] - **1 - subparabolic curve condition**: \[ [f_v, f_{vv}, \xi]=0 \] - **2 - subparabolic curve condition**: \[ [f_u, f_{uu}, \xi]=0 \] ### Conclusions By studying the dual relationship between line congruences and surfaces, the paper reveals the correspondence and properties of these geometric objects in different spaces. In particular, the author proves the general behavior of subparabolic curves near the discriminant curve and discusses the equivalence of the Loewner conjecture in this dual framework. These results provide a new perspective for understanding geometric structures in high - dimensional spaces.
