Abstract:Abstract Nanoparticles-based glues have recently been shown with substantial potential for hydrogel adhesion. Nevertheless, the transformative advance in hydrogel-based application places great challenges on the rapidity, robustness, and universality of achieving hydrogel adhesion, which are rarely accommodated by existing nanoparticles-based glues. Herein, we design a type of nanohesives based on the modulation of hydrogel mechanics and the surface chemical activation of nanoparticles. The nanohesives can form robust hydrogel adhesion in seconds, to the surface of arbitrary engineering solids and biological tissues without any surface pre-treatments. A representative application of hydrogel machine demonstrates the tough and compliant adhesion between dynamic tissues and sensors via nanohesives, guaranteeing accurate and stable blood flow monitoring in vivo. Combined with their biocompatibility and inherent antimicrobial properties, the nanohesives provide a promising strategy in the field of hydrogel based engineering.

Abstract:Adhering hydrogels to various materials is fundamental to a large array of established and emerging applications. The last few years have seen transformative advances in achieving strong hydrogel adhesion, which is a supramolecular phenomenon. Two adherends connect through covalent bonds, noncovalent complexes, polymer chains, polymer networks, or nanoparticles. Separating the adherends dissipates energy through cascading events across length scales, including bond cleavage, chain retraction, and bulk hysteresis. A unifying principle has emerged: strong hydrogel adhesion requires the synergy of chemistry of bonds, topology of connection, and mechanics of dissipation. This synergy characterizes hydrogel adhesion to various materials (another hydrogel, tissue, elastomer, plastic, metal, glass, and ceramic) in various operations (cast, coat, print, attach, pierce, and glue). Strong adhesion can be made permanent, reversible, degradable, or on‐demand detachable. The development of hydrogel adhesion and its applications adheres disciplines, discovers interlinks, and forges cohesion. Discussed throughout the review are immediate opportunities for fundamental studies and practical applications.

Chain-like One-Dimensional Assembly of Mesoporous Silica Nanoparticles: An Approach To Improve Hydrogel Adhesion

Abstract:Mesoporous silica nanoparticles (MSNPs) are well known for their adhesive properties with hydrogels and living tissues. However, achieving direct contact between the silica nanoparticle surface and the adherend necessitates the removal of capping agents, which can lead to severe aggregation when exposed to wet surfaces. This aggregation is ineffective for simultaneously bridging the two adherends, resulting in a reduced adhesive strength. In this study, we designed and synthesized mesoporous silica nanochains (MSNCs) to enhance the interactions with hydrogels by promoting the formation of coarser structures with increased nanopore exposure. Chain-like one-dimensional assemblies in the MSNCs were generated by depleting the capping ligand, cetyltrimethylammonium bromide, from the surface of the MSNPs. To quantify the porous areas of the MSNCs, we analyzed scanning electron microscopy (SEM) images using an in-house SEM image analysis algorithm. Additionally, we conducted a comparative assessment of the adhesion energies of MSNCs and MSNPs on a poly(dimethylacrylamide) hydrogel using a universal testing machine. The MSNCs exhibited a maximum adhesion energy of 13.7 ± 0.7 J/m2 at 3 wt %, surpassing that of MSNPs (10.9 ± 0.3 J/m2) at 2 wt %. Moreover, the unique stacking structure of the MSNCs enabled them to maintain an adhesion energy of 13.4 ± 1.0 J/m2 at a high concentration of 9 wt %, whereas the adhesion energy of MSNPs decreased to 8.2 ± 0.4 J/m2. This underscores their potential as superior hydrogel adhesives in challenging wet tissue-like environments.

Abstract:Hydrogel is a kind of three-dimensional network structure polymer prepared from natural or synthetic materials by physical/chemical cross-linking. It is insoluble in water but can absorb dozens or even thousands of times itself of water. The unique network structure makes it have good inherent strength and adhesion. Through one or more bonding mechanisms (such as mechanical interlocking, diffusion, wet adhesion, etc.), hydrogels can achieve strong adhesion with matrix materials. The adhesion mechanism and application of hydrogels are reviewed in this paper. First, the raw material source, stimulus–response and network structure classification of hydrogels are briefly introduced; then, the research on the design strategy and adhesion mechanism of adhesive hydrogels in recent years is summarized; finally, the applications of adhesive hydrogels in biomedicine, food science, cosmetics, and textiles are introduced, and the improvement of human life quality brought by adhesive hydrogels is expounded.

Abstract:In virtue of extracellular features, hydrogels have been used in various areas such as tissue repair, artificial skins, and biological electronics, etc. Intact contact of tough hydrogels to targeted surfaces is usually required to avoid blood or body fluids leakage or inaccurate signals of sensors. The collaboration of high interactive energy between interfaces and high fracture toughness of the constituent hydrogels can effectively prevent relatively macroscopic motions of adhesives from substrates under deformation. Nevertheless, variations in surface microenvironment like moisture, roughness, and functional groups can lead to the scission of bonds between bulk hydrogel and surfaces. Accordingly, to prevent detachment of adhesives, specific tactics should be utilized to reach a targeted surface based on substrates’ physical and chemical properties. This review concentrates on various hydrogel adhesives in the near‐decade, from design strategies, including physical interactions, chemical bonds, and bio‐inspired ways, to eventual applications, like wound closure, sensors, soft robots, and tissue repair. Meanwhile, it is anticipated that these approaches could spur sparks for fabricating appropriate tough adhesives under different circumstances.
Mechanically Strong Interpenetrating Network Hydrogels for Differential Cellular Adhesion

Abstract:Hydrogels as "soft-and-wet" materials have been widely used as tissue engineering scaffolds due to their similarity to natural extracellular matrix. However, it remains extremely challenging to develop mechanically strong hydrogels that can stimulate desirable mammalian cell adhesion but reduce the probable fouling from microbes and other unwanted cells. To achieve this purpose, we fabricated interpenetrating network (IPN) hydrogels consisting of cell-adhesive gelatin and non-fouling carboxybetaine (CBMA) via a "one-pot" synthesis process. Far stronger than their parent gels of gelatin and pCBMA, the IPN gels presented compressive and stretch fracture stresses over 6.5 and 2.4 MPa, and failure strains over 95% and 700%, respectively. The obtained IPN gels only allowed the adhesion and confluence of parenchymal mammalian cells (e.g. human umbilical vein endothelial cells, HUVEC; smooth muscle cells, SMC) but resisted well the attachment of platelets and microbes. In this regard, the CBMA/gelatin IPN gels can be potentially used in the construction of artificial soft tissues such as blood vessels because of their specific mechanical and differential adhesive properties.

Abstract:Recently, inorganic nanocomposite hydrogels being their more excellent properties have been attracted considerable attention on the field of hydrogel researching due to the nano-fillers having many peculiar effects. Furthermore, the structural morphologies of the nanoparticles are various, such as lamellar-, tubal- and spherical-like, and different structural morphologies of nanopartilces should have different effects on the final properties of the composites. Up to now, various inorganic nanoparticles with different structural morphologies, have been already applied to prepare composite hydrogels, which showed distinct properties. In this paper, the research progress of inorganic nanocomposite hydrogels, based on various structural morphologies of nanoparticles, is reviewed.

Abstract:Abstract The ability to control nanostructure shape and dimensions presents opportunities to design materials in which their macroscopic properties are dependent upon the nature of the nanoparticle. Although particle morphology has been recognized as a crucial parameter, the exploitation of the potential shape-dependent properties has, to date, been limited. Herein, we demonstrate that nanoparticle shape is a critical consideration in the determination of nanocomposite hydrogel properties. Using translationally relevant calcium-alginate hydrogels, we show that the use of poly( L -lactide)-based nanoparticles with platelet morphology as an adhesive results in a significant enhancement of adhesion over nanoparticle glues comprised of spherical or cylindrical micelles. Furthermore, gel nanocomposites containing platelets showed an enhanced resistance to breaking under strain compared to their spherical and cylindrical counterparts. This study opens the doors to a change in direction in the field of gel nanocomposites, where nanoparticle shape plays an important role in tuning mechanical properties.

Abstract:To date, the robust and durable adhesion capability of hydrogel adhesives in wet environments remains a huge challenge. Herein, a physicochemically double-network crosslinked hydrogel matrix was prepared by mixing acrylic acid (AAc), chitosan (CS) and tannic acid (TA) as the main components and the subsequent in situ polymerization of AAc. The abundant reactive sites on the surface of the hydrogel matrix facilitate rapid, strong and repeatable adhesion to different surfaces of engineering solids and biological tissues in an aquatic environment. The formation of amide covalent bonds resulting from the addition of the bridging agent further expands the long-term application of the hydrogel in tissue repair, and the constructed hydrogel-tissue adhesive interface still has robust adhesion energy after soaking in a physiological environment for up to one month. Moreover, the hydrogel showed fantastic hemostatic performance due to its characteristics of platelet adhesion and high burst pressure. Overall, the persistent adhesion and excellent cytocompatibility of the hydrogel adhesive make it potentially applicable in medical adhesives.

Abstract:Multifunctional adhesive hydrogels hold great promise in many biomedical applications. The recent advances in design strategies for tissue adhesion, various functions, and emerging applications are reviewed. The future trend of adhesive hydrogels is also prospected. This review will inspire and drive the development of a new generation of adhesive hydrogel biomaterials with personalized properties. Adhesive hydrogels characterized by structural properties similar to the extracellular matrix, excellent biocompatibility, controlled degradation, and tunable mechanical properties have demonstrated significant potential in biomedical applications, including tissue engineering, biosensors, and drug delivery systems. These hydrogels exhibit remarkable adhesion to target substrates and can be rationally engineered to meet specific requirements. In recent decades, adhesive hydrogels have experienced significant advancements driven by the introduction of numerous multifunctional design strategies. This review initially summarizes the chemical bond‐based design strategies for tissue adhesion, encompassing static covalent bonds, dynamic covalent bonds, and non‐covalent interactions. Subsequently, the multiple functionalities imparted by these diverse design strategies, including highly stretchable and tough performances, responsiveness to microenvironments, anti‐freezing/heating properties, conductivity, antibacterial activity, and hemostatic properties are discussed. In addition, recent advances in the biomedical applications of adhesive hydrogels, focusing on tissue repair, drug delivery, medical devices, and wearable sensors are reviewed. Finally, the current challenges are highlighted and future trends in this rapidly evolving field are discussed.

Abstract:In this study, a series of gelatin/silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) composite hydrogels are prepared for the first time through the facile in situ formation of AgNPs. AgNPs, which are formed by reducing Ag+ using dopamine-conjugated gelatins. These can simultaneously crosslink gelatin molecules, thus generating three-dimentional and porous hydrogels. The gelation time and pore sizes of these composite hydrogels can be controlled by controlling the feeding concentration of AgNO3 and weight content of gelatin in water, respectively. The feeding concentration of AgNO3 also has an effect on the equilibrium swelling ratio of the hydrogels. Moreover, these composite hydrogels, with a controllable gelation time and in situ forming ability, exhibit good adhesive properties and can be used as drug-release depots.

Abstract:Hydrogels showing strong adhesion to different substrates have garnered significant attention for engineering applications. However, the current development of such hydrogel-based adhesive is predominantly limited to synthetic polymers, owing to their exceptional performance and an extensive array of chemical options. To advance the development of sustainable hydrogel-based adhesives, we successfully create a highly robust all-cellulose hydrogel-based adhesive, which is composed of concentrated dialcohol cellulose nanorods (DCNRs) and relies on enhanced hydrogen bonding interactions between cellulose and the substrate. We implement a sequential oxidization-reduction process to achieve this high-performance all-cellulose hydrogel, which is realized by converting the two secondary hydroxyl groups within an anhydroglucose unit into two primary hydroxyl groups, while simultaneously linearizing the cellulose chains. Such structural and chemical modifications on cellulose chains increase out-of-plane interactions between the DCNRs hydrogel and substrate, as simulations indicate. Additionally, these modifications enhance the flexibility of the cellulose chains, which would otherwise be rigid. The resulting all-cellulose hydrogels demonstrate injectability and strong adhesion capability to a wide range of substrates, including wood, metal, glass, and plastic. This green and sustainable all-cellulose hydrogel-based adhesive holds great promise for future bio-based adhesive design.

Abstract:Hydrogels, exhibiting wide application prospects in soft robotics, tissue engineering, implantable electronics, etc., upon functioning often require to adhere to substrates especially in wet environments despite that most hydrogels are nonsticky because of their high water content and hydrophilicity. Herein, a strategy to rapidly reverse the adhesion properties of hydrogels via surface anchoring very thin adhesive coatings is reported. Inspired by mussel adhesion, poly(vinyl alcohol) hydrogel is first coated with polymerized tannic acid that chelates with Fe3+, which serves as the interface bonding layer. Subsequently, a wet adhesive poly(dopamine methacrylamide‐co‐methoxyethyl acrylate) is firmly anchored to form the very thin adhesive coating (<10 µm) that can generate high adhesion strength both in the air and underwater. The adhesive coating also endows hydrogels with high water retention capacity under warm condition (50 °C) and is able to get on‐demand functionalization on the designated area to achieve asymmetric adhesion, static and dynamic control over wettability. The strategy demonstrates potentials for broad applications from biomedicine to wearable electronics. One kind of novel underwater adhesive hydrogels with robust underwater adhesion performance is engineered by anchoring mussel‐protein‐inspired copolymer onto poly(vinyl alcohol) hydrogel surface with tannic acid/Fe3+ as bridge‐bonding layer. The adhesive hydrogels demonstrate good adhesion strengths both in dry and wet environments, cyclic adhesion performance, good water retention capacity, along with highly sensitive conductivity as artificial electronic skins.

Abstract:Injectable hydrogel adhesives have gained widespread attention due to their ease of use, fast application time, and suitability for minimally invasive procedures. Several biomedical applications depend on tough adhesion between hydrogel adhesives and tissues, including wound closure and healing, hemostasis, tissue regeneration, drug delivery, and wearable electronic devices. Compared with bulk hydrogel adhesives formed ex situ, injectable hydrogel adhesives are more difficult to achieve strong adhesion strength due to a further balance of cohesion and adhesion while maintaining their flowability. In this review, the critical principles in designing tough adhesion of injectable hydrogel adhesives are summarized, including simultaneously enhancing their intrinsic interfacial toughness ( Γ0inter ) and mechanical dissipation ( ΓDinter ). Thereafter, various design strategies to enhance the Γ0inter and ΓDinter are discussed and evaluated respectively, involving multiple noncovalent/covalent interactions, topological connections, and polymer network structures. Furthermore, targeted biomedical applications of injectable hydrogel adhesives for specific tissue needs are systematically highlighted. In the end, this review outlines the challenges and trends in producing next-generation multifunctional injectable hydrogels for both practical and translational applications.

Abstract:Underwater adhesives with efficient, selective, and repeatable adhesion are urgently needed for biomedical applications. Catechol-containing hydrogel adhesives have aroused much interest, but the design of specific underwater adhesives to biotic surfaces is still a challenge. Here we report a facile way that recapitulates the adhesion mechanism of mussel and sea gooseberry for the development of robust and specific hydrogel adhesives. With an exquisite design of chemical bonding, catechol chemistry, and electrostatic interaction, the hydrogel consisting of poly(acrylic acid) grafted with N-hydroxysuccinimide ester (PAA-NHS ester), tea polyphenol (TP), chitosan (CS), and Al3+ exhibited fast, specific, and repeatable underwater adhesion to various biological tissues, such as porcine skin, intestine, liver, and shrimp. Furthermore, nanofibers-hydrogel composite (NF-HG) was prepared via the wicking effect of curcumin-loaded electrospun nanofibers. The NF-HG exhibited pH-responsive color changing properties, sustained drug release, and good cell viability, which made it suitable as a novel wound healing material. This strategy may provide great inspiration for designing multifunctional specific underwater adhesives.

Abstract:Hydrogel is a class of biomaterials that is widely adopted in tissue engineering due to its versatility and biocompatibility in mimicking natural tissue properties. For these hydrogels, the ability to adhere in wet and underwater conditions would be beneficial since physiological environment is in general wet or even underwater. As a result, various chemical, physical, and structural principles are exploited to modify the adhesiveness of existing hydrogels. These include catechol adhesion, hydrophobic modification, or microneedles, and more. Yet, to yield optimal performances, the adhesion strategies have to be designed to match the properties of the tissues to be applied on, and at the same time fulfil the requirements of the biomedical application. To give a systematical overview in determining the appropriate adhesion strategies, we first summarize major factors in facilitating wet and underwater adhesion for hydrogels, then comment on the difference in wet adhesive hydrogels among common clinical scenarios in literature. After that, we discuss the current trends and possible improvements in commercialized hydrogels, and finally comment on how adhesiveness could enhance hydrogel applications as other aspect of hydrogels made its progress. Through this review, we hope to provide a holistic view on the role of adhesion strategies in different biomedical applications, and hence to help identify actionable clinical scenarios that underwater and wet adhesive hydrogels could improve upon.

Abstract:Robust hydrogel adhesion is achieved by constructing a bioinspired mineralized transition layer through ion diffusion and subsequent mineral deposition. Hydrogels have gained intensive interest in biomedical and flexible electronics, and adhesion of hydrogels to substrates or devices is indispensable in these application scenarios. Although numerous hydrogel adhesion strategies have been developed, it is still challenging to achieve a hydrogel with robust adhesion interface through a universal yet simple method. Here, a strategy for establishing strong interfacial adhesion between various hydrogels and a wide variety of substrates (i.e., soft hydrogels and rigid solids, including glass, aluminum, PET, nylon and PDMS) even under wet conditions, is reported. This strong interfacial adhesion is realized by constructing a bioinspired mineralized transition layer through ion diffusion and subsequent mineral deposition. This strategy is not only generally applicable to a broad range of substrates and ionic pairs, but also compatible with various fabrication approaches without compromising their interfacial robustnesses. This strategy is further demonstrated in the application of single‐electrode triboelectric nanogenerators (TENG), where a robust interface between the hydrogel and elastomer layers is enabled to ensure a reliable signal generation and output.
