Abstract:In this review, we focus on the design principle of stretchable and tough hydrogels as well as the applications in the fields of tissue engineering and flexible electronic devices. Through connecting hydrogel network structures, toughening mechanisms and chemical structures with macroscopic mechanical properties, we mainly discussed the research progress of single network hydrogel, double network hydrogel, nanocomposite hydrogel and so on. The summary and outlook of the new ideas and directions of stretchable and tough hydrogels were also demonstrated at last.

To promote the development of more hydrogels, we will summarize methods and materials that have been used to develop these gels, and then we will compare the performance of these gels in an aim to guide the future development of gels for superior performance, especially for specific applications.
Strong and Ultra-Tough Supramolecular Hydrogel Enabled by Strain-Induced Microphase Separation

Abstract:Architected hydrogels are widely used in biomedicine, soft robots, and flexible electronics while still possess big challenges in strong toughness, and shape modeling. Here, inspired with the universal hydrogen bonding interactions in biological systems, a strain-induced microphase separation path toward achieving the printable, tough supramolecular polymer hydrogels by hydrogen bond engineering is developed. Specifically, it subtly designs and fabricates the poly (N-acryloylsemicarbazide-co-acrylic acid) hydrogels with high hydrogen bond energy by phase conversion induced hydrogen bond reconstruction. The resultant hydrogels exhibited the unique strain-induced microphase separation behavior, resulting in the excellent strong toughness with, for example, an ultimate stress of 9.1 +/- 0.3 MPa, strain levels of 1020 +/- 126%, toughness of 33.7 +/- 6.6 MJ m(-3), and fracture energy of 171.1 +/- 34.3 kJ m(-2). More importantly, the hydrogen bond engineered supramolecular hydrogels possess dynamic shape memory character, i.e shape fixing at low temperature while recovery after heating. As the proof of concept, the tailored hydrogel stents are readily manufactured by 3D printing, which showed good biocompatibility, load-bearing and drug elution, being beneficial for the biomedical applications. It is believed that the present 3D printing of the architected dynamic hydrogels with ultrahigh toughness can broaden their applications.

Abstract:In virtue of extracellular features, hydrogels have been used in various areas such as tissue repair, artificial skins, and biological electronics, etc. Intact contact of tough hydrogels to targeted surfaces is usually required to avoid blood or body fluids leakage or inaccurate signals of sensors. The collaboration of high interactive energy between interfaces and high fracture toughness of the constituent hydrogels can effectively prevent relatively macroscopic motions of adhesives from substrates under deformation. Nevertheless, variations in surface microenvironment like moisture, roughness, and functional groups can lead to the scission of bonds between bulk hydrogel and surfaces. Accordingly, to prevent detachment of adhesives, specific tactics should be utilized to reach a targeted surface based on substrates’ physical and chemical properties. This review concentrates on various hydrogel adhesives in the near‐decade, from design strategies, including physical interactions, chemical bonds, and bio‐inspired ways, to eventual applications, like wound closure, sensors, soft robots, and tissue repair. Meanwhile, it is anticipated that these approaches could spur sparks for fabricating appropriate tough adhesives under different circumstances.

Abstract:Multifunctional adhesive hydrogels hold great promise in many biomedical applications. The recent advances in design strategies for tissue adhesion, various functions, and emerging applications are reviewed. The future trend of adhesive hydrogels is also prospected. This review will inspire and drive the development of a new generation of adhesive hydrogel biomaterials with personalized properties. Adhesive hydrogels characterized by structural properties similar to the extracellular matrix, excellent biocompatibility, controlled degradation, and tunable mechanical properties have demonstrated significant potential in biomedical applications, including tissue engineering, biosensors, and drug delivery systems. These hydrogels exhibit remarkable adhesion to target substrates and can be rationally engineered to meet specific requirements. In recent decades, adhesive hydrogels have experienced significant advancements driven by the introduction of numerous multifunctional design strategies. This review initially summarizes the chemical bond‐based design strategies for tissue adhesion, encompassing static covalent bonds, dynamic covalent bonds, and non‐covalent interactions. Subsequently, the multiple functionalities imparted by these diverse design strategies, including highly stretchable and tough performances, responsiveness to microenvironments, anti‐freezing/heating properties, conductivity, antibacterial activity, and hemostatic properties are discussed. In addition, recent advances in the biomedical applications of adhesive hydrogels, focusing on tissue repair, drug delivery, medical devices, and wearable sensors are reviewed. Finally, the current challenges are highlighted and future trends in this rapidly evolving field are discussed.

Abstract:Injectable hydrogel adhesives have gained widespread attention due to their ease of use, fast application time, and suitability for minimally invasive procedures. Several biomedical applications depend on tough adhesion between hydrogel adhesives and tissues, including wound closure and healing, hemostasis, tissue regeneration, drug delivery, and wearable electronic devices. Compared with bulk hydrogel adhesives formed ex situ, injectable hydrogel adhesives are more difficult to achieve strong adhesion strength due to a further balance of cohesion and adhesion while maintaining their flowability. In this review, the critical principles in designing tough adhesion of injectable hydrogel adhesives are summarized, including simultaneously enhancing their intrinsic interfacial toughness ( Γ0inter ) and mechanical dissipation ( ΓDinter ). Thereafter, various design strategies to enhance the Γ0inter and ΓDinter are discussed and evaluated respectively, involving multiple noncovalent/covalent interactions, topological connections, and polymer network structures. Furthermore, targeted biomedical applications of injectable hydrogel adhesives for specific tissue needs are systematically highlighted. In the end, this review outlines the challenges and trends in producing next-generation multifunctional injectable hydrogels for both practical and translational applications.

Abstract:Hydrogels with tailor-made swelling-shrinkable properties have aroused considerable interest in numerous biomedical domains. For example, as swelling is a key issue for blood and wound extrudates absorption, the transference of nutrients and metabolites, as well as drug diffusion and release, hydrogels with high swelling capacity have been widely applicated in full-thickness skin wound healing and tissue regeneration, and drug delivery. Nevertheless, in the fields of tissue adhesives and internal soft-tissue wound healing, and bioelectronics, non-swelling hydrogels play very important functions owing to their stable macroscopic dimension and physical performance in physiological environment. Moreover, the negative swelling behavior (i.e., shrinkage) of hydrogels can be exploited to drive noninvasive wound closure, and achieve resolution enhancement of hydrogel scaffolds. In addition, it can help push out the entrapped drugs, thus promote drug release. However, there still has not been a general review of the constructions and biomedical applications of hydrogels from the viewpoint of swelling-shrinkable properties. Therefore, this review summarizes the tactics employed so far in tailoring the swelling-shrinkable properties of hydrogels and their biomedical applications. And a relatively comprehensive understanding of the current progress and future challenge of the hydrogels with different swelling-shrinkable features is provided for potential clinical translations.

Abstract:Hydrogel adhesives are extensively employed in biological interfaces such as epidermal flexible electronics, tissue engineering, and implanted device. The development of functional hydrogel adhesives is a critical, yet challenging task since combining two or more attributes that seem incompatible into one adhesive hydrogel without sacrificing the hydrogel's pristine capabilities. In this Review, we highlight current developments in the fabrication of functional adhesive hydrogels, which are suitable for a variety of application scenarios, particularly those that occur underwater or on tissue/organ surface conditions. The design strategies for a multifunctional adhesive hydrogel with desirable properties including underwater adhesion, self-healing, good biocompatibility, electrical conductivity, and anti-swelling are discussed comprehensively. We then discuss the challenges faced by adhesive hydrogels, as well as their potential applications in biological interfaces. Adhesive hydrogels are the star building blocks of bio-interface materials for individualized healthcare and other bioengineering areas.

Abstract:With the continuous appearance and expansion of high-strength hydrogels in emerging fields such as industry, medicine, and green development, the synthesis and application of high-strength hydrogels have developed dramatically and achieved remarkable results from the aspects of raw materials, preparation methods, and reinforcement mechanisms. However, there is still a lack of systematic reviews on high-strength hydrogels. Herein, we first discuss the advantages of natural and synthetic materials, and the characteristics of high-strength hydrogels prepared from different raw materials; we then expound on the influence mechanism of physical interactions or chemical bonds on the strength of the hydrogel from three aspects: physical cross-linking, chemical cross-linking, and dynamic chemical cross-linking; at last, we systematically expound the strengthening strategies, including double network/multi-network, nanocomposite, topology, supramolecular polymerization, and characteristics and strengthening mechanisms of such high-strength hydrogels. In addition, based on the development status of high-strength hydrogels, we combined the application requirements and the existing drawbacks of high-strength hydrogels to propose their possible development directions in the future.

Abstract:Load-bearing biological tissues, such as cartilage and muscles, exhibit several crucial properties, including high elasticity, strength, and recoverability. These characteristics enable these tissues to endure significant mechanical stresses and swiftly recover after deformation, contributing to their exceptional durability and functionality. In contrast, while hydrogels are highly biocompatible and hold promise as synthetic biomaterials, their inherent network structure often limits their ability to simultaneously possess a diverse range of superior mechanical properties. As a result, the applications of hydrogels are significantly constrained. This article delves into the design mechanisms and mechanical properties of various tough hydrogels and investigates their applications in tissue engineering, flexible electronics, and other fields. The objective is to provide insights into the fabrication and application of hydrogels with combined high strength, stretchability, toughness, and fast recovery as well as their future development directions and challenges.

Abstract:Over the past two decades, the development of hydrogels with high mechanical strength and toughness shows both fundamental and practical significances. It is challenging yet highly desired to process these tough hydrogels into structural elements with desired architectures, which are important for real applications. Three-dimensional (3D) printing, as an emerging additive manufacturing strategy, demonstrates great potentials for engineering tough hydrogels with versatile applications. This paper aims to review the recent progress on 3D printing of tough hydrogels and their relevant applications. We give an overview on the advantages and requirements of tough hydrogel systems for specific 3D printing technologies, followed by detailed summary of the network structures, mechanical performances, toughening mechanisms, and representative applications of the printed tough hydrogels. Finally, recent advances of 4D printing of tough hydrogels are discussed as a prospective direction to devise soft actuators and robots.

Abstract:Hydrogel is a kind of three-dimensional network structure polymer prepared from natural or synthetic materials by physical/chemical cross-linking. It is insoluble in water but can absorb dozens or even thousands of times itself of water. The unique network structure makes it have good inherent strength and adhesion. Through one or more bonding mechanisms (such as mechanical interlocking, diffusion, wet adhesion, etc.), hydrogels can achieve strong adhesion with matrix materials. The adhesion mechanism and application of hydrogels are reviewed in this paper. First, the raw material source, stimulus–response and network structure classification of hydrogels are briefly introduced; then, the research on the design strategy and adhesion mechanism of adhesive hydrogels in recent years is summarized; finally, the applications of adhesive hydrogels in biomedicine, food science, cosmetics, and textiles are introduced, and the improvement of human life quality brought by adhesive hydrogels is expounded.

Abstract:Hydrogels possess unique features such as softness, wetness, responsiveness, and biocompatibility, making them highly suitable for biointegrated applications that have close interactions with living organisms. However, conventional man‐made hydrogels are usually soft and brittle, making them inferior to the mechanically robust biological hydrogels. To ensure reliable and durable operation of biointegrated wearable and implantable devices, mechanical matching and shape adaptivity of hydrogels to tissues and organs are essential. Recent advances in polymer science and processing technologies have enabled mechanical engineering and shaping of hydrogels for various biointegrated applications. In this review, we summarize polymer network structuring strategies at micro/nano scales for toughening hydrogels, and further discuss representative mechanical functionalities that exist in biological materials but are not easily achieved in synthetic hydrogels. We review three categories of processing technologies namely 3D printing, spinning, and coating for fabrication of tough hydrogel constructs with complex shapes, and the corresponding hydrogel toughening strategies are also highlighted. These developments enable adaptive fabrication of mechanically robust and functional hydrogel devices, and promote application of hydrogels in the fields of biomedical engineering, bioelectronics and soft robotics. Abstract:A hydrogel is a polymer material with a porous network structure, which allows the hydrogel to swell rapidly underwater without dissolving. This unique property of hydrogels lays the foundation for their application in underwater adhesion. However, due to the existence of the hydration layer, the interaction between the hydrogel and the adherend surface is seriously hindered, and the underwater adhesion ability of the hydrogel is severely weakened. In the past few decades, various hydrogels for underwater adhesion have been developed, among which the underwater adhesion mechanisms of natural organisms have provided a steady stream of inspiration for researchers to design underwater adhesion hydrogels. In this review, we first summarize the adhesion mechanism and design strategies of underwater adhesion hydrogels, and then introduce the currently common experimental methods to test the adhesion strength and adhesion toughness of underwater adhesion hydrogels. According to the development trend in recent years, we summarize the common application fields of underwater adhesion hydrogels. Finally, we present our views on the challenges of hydrogels for underwater adhesion, and provide an outlook on future research directions. This review provides a comprehensive overview of underwater adhesion hydrogels, which will provide rational guidelines for the design and fabrication of underwater adhesion hydrogels.

Abstract:Adhering hydrogels to various materials is fundamental to a large array of established and emerging applications. The last few years have seen transformative advances in achieving strong hydrogel adhesion, which is a supramolecular phenomenon. Two adherends connect through covalent bonds, noncovalent complexes, polymer chains, polymer networks, or nanoparticles. Separating the adherends dissipates energy through cascading events across length scales, including bond cleavage, chain retraction, and bulk hysteresis. A unifying principle has emerged: strong hydrogel adhesion requires the synergy of chemistry of bonds, topology of connection, and mechanics of dissipation. This synergy characterizes hydrogel adhesion to various materials (another hydrogel, tissue, elastomer, plastic, metal, glass, and ceramic) in various operations (cast, coat, print, attach, pierce, and glue). Strong adhesion can be made permanent, reversible, degradable, or on‐demand detachable. The development of hydrogel adhesion and its applications adheres disciplines, discovers interlinks, and forges cohesion. Discussed throughout the review are immediate opportunities for fundamental studies and practical applications.

Abstract:Over the past few decades, polymeric hydrogels have gained significant progress in various fields. As the most biochemically and structurally functional macromolecules in biological organisms, proteins have structural and mechanical properties similar to that of natural extracellular matrices (ECM). By combination of polymers with protein, protein-polymer hydrogel can be constructed as biomaterials with diverse properties and possess a wide range of applications. In this review, we summarized the progress of research on protein-polymer hydrogels and introduced the common fabrication methods. The properties of the protein-polymer hydrogels were briefly described, including biocompatibility, adhesion properties, responsiveness, mechanical properties, swelling properties, and degradability. In addition, we also reviewed the applications of protein-polymer hydrogels in tissue engineering, drug delivery and encapsulation, wearable sensors, adsorption, and other applications. Finally, we summarize the research on protein-polymer hydrogels and highlight the current challenges and future prospects of the field, which may provide a meaningful reference for the field of protein-polymer hydrogels.

Abstract:Hydrogels are a class of soft and wet materials that typically consist of a three-dimensional polymer network that swells yet does not dissolve in water. There are extensive research and development of hydrogel materials for diverse applications over the past two decades. More recently, hydrogel films with controlled thickness have been fabricated based on crosslinked natural or synthetic polymer networks. These films not only show the chemical/physical properties of bulk gels, such as biocompatibility and stimuli responsiveness, but also exhibit faster response speed and high flexibility/adaptivity, allowing for new functions and applications. In this minireview, we summarize the recent advances in hydrogel films with focuses on two aspects: (i) methods for facile fabrication of hydrogel films, and (ii) versatile applications of hydrogel films in biomedical and emerging fields. Hydrogel films with controllable thickness, fast response, good compliance, and tunable mechanical properties are ideal materials as artificial muscles and wound dressing, and to construct soft actuators, flexible electronics, and so forth. Current challenges and future perspectives of hydrogel films are also given at the end of this minireview.
