Abstract:Hydrogels with tailor-made swelling-shrinkable properties have aroused considerable interest in numerous biomedical domains. For example, as swelling is a key issue for blood and wound extrudates absorption, the transference of nutrients and metabolites, as well as drug diffusion and release, hydrogels with high swelling capacity have been widely applicated in full-thickness skin wound healing and tissue regeneration, and drug delivery. Nevertheless, in the fields of tissue adhesives and internal soft-tissue wound healing, and bioelectronics, non-swelling hydrogels play very important functions owing to their stable macroscopic dimension and physical performance in physiological environment. Moreover, the negative swelling behavior (i.e., shrinkage) of hydrogels can be exploited to drive noninvasive wound closure, and achieve resolution enhancement of hydrogel scaffolds. In addition, it can help push out the entrapped drugs, thus promote drug release. However, there still has not been a general review of the constructions and biomedical applications of hydrogels from the viewpoint of swelling-shrinkable properties. Therefore, this review summarizes the tactics employed so far in tailoring the swelling-shrinkable properties of hydrogels and their biomedical applications. And a relatively comprehensive understanding of the current progress and future challenge of the hydrogels with different swelling-shrinkable features is provided for potential clinical translations.

Abstract:Multifunctional adhesive hydrogels hold great promise in many biomedical applications. The recent advances in design strategies for tissue adhesion, various functions, and emerging applications are reviewed. The future trend of adhesive hydrogels is also prospected. This review will inspire and drive the development of a new generation of adhesive hydrogel biomaterials with personalized properties. Adhesive hydrogels characterized by structural properties similar to the extracellular matrix, excellent biocompatibility, controlled degradation, and tunable mechanical properties have demonstrated significant potential in biomedical applications, including tissue engineering, biosensors, and drug delivery systems. These hydrogels exhibit remarkable adhesion to target substrates and can be rationally engineered to meet specific requirements. In recent decades, adhesive hydrogels have experienced significant advancements driven by the introduction of numerous multifunctional design strategies. This review initially summarizes the chemical bond‐based design strategies for tissue adhesion, encompassing static covalent bonds, dynamic covalent bonds, and non‐covalent interactions. Subsequently, the multiple functionalities imparted by these diverse design strategies, including highly stretchable and tough performances, responsiveness to microenvironments, anti‐freezing/heating properties, conductivity, antibacterial activity, and hemostatic properties are discussed. In addition, recent advances in the biomedical applications of adhesive hydrogels, focusing on tissue repair, drug delivery, medical devices, and wearable sensors are reviewed. Finally, the current challenges are highlighted and future trends in this rapidly evolving field are discussed.

Abstract:<p>Adhesive hydrogels have broad applications in tissue adhesives, hemostatic agents, and biomedical sensors. Various bio-inspired glues and synthetic adhesives are clinically used as conventional hemostatic agents and auxiliary tools for wound closure. Medical adhesives are needed to effectively and quickly control bleeding, thereby reducing the risk of complications caused by severe blood loss. Medical sensors need to have excellent skin compliance, mechanical properties, sensitivity, and biological safety. This review focuses on recent progress in adhesive hydrogel systems, their structures, adhesion mechanisms, construction strategies, and emerging applications in the biomedical field.</p>

Abstract:Hydrogel is a kind of three-dimensional network structure polymer prepared from natural or synthetic materials by physical/chemical cross-linking. It is insoluble in water but can absorb dozens or even thousands of times itself of water. The unique network structure makes it have good inherent strength and adhesion. Through one or more bonding mechanisms (such as mechanical interlocking, diffusion, wet adhesion, etc.), hydrogels can achieve strong adhesion with matrix materials. The adhesion mechanism and application of hydrogels are reviewed in this paper. First, the raw material source, stimulus–response and network structure classification of hydrogels are briefly introduced; then, the research on the design strategy and adhesion mechanism of adhesive hydrogels in recent years is summarized; finally, the applications of adhesive hydrogels in biomedicine, food science, cosmetics, and textiles are introduced, and the improvement of human life quality brought by adhesive hydrogels is expounded.

Abstract:Hydrogel adhesives are extensively employed in biological interfaces such as epidermal flexible electronics, tissue engineering, and implanted device. The development of functional hydrogel adhesives is a critical, yet challenging task since combining two or more attributes that seem incompatible into one adhesive hydrogel without sacrificing the hydrogel's pristine capabilities. In this Review, we highlight current developments in the fabrication of functional adhesive hydrogels, which are suitable for a variety of application scenarios, particularly those that occur underwater or on tissue/organ surface conditions. The design strategies for a multifunctional adhesive hydrogel with desirable properties including underwater adhesion, self-healing, good biocompatibility, electrical conductivity, and anti-swelling are discussed comprehensively. We then discuss the challenges faced by adhesive hydrogels, as well as their potential applications in biological interfaces. Adhesive hydrogels are the star building blocks of bio-interface materials for individualized healthcare and other bioengineering areas.

Abstract:In virtue of extracellular features, hydrogels have been used in various areas such as tissue repair, artificial skins, and biological electronics, etc. Intact contact of tough hydrogels to targeted surfaces is usually required to avoid blood or body fluids leakage or inaccurate signals of sensors. The collaboration of high interactive energy between interfaces and high fracture toughness of the constituent hydrogels can effectively prevent relatively macroscopic motions of adhesives from substrates under deformation. Nevertheless, variations in surface microenvironment like moisture, roughness, and functional groups can lead to the scission of bonds between bulk hydrogel and surfaces. Accordingly, to prevent detachment of adhesives, specific tactics should be utilized to reach a targeted surface based on substrates’ physical and chemical properties. This review concentrates on various hydrogel adhesives in the near‐decade, from design strategies, including physical interactions, chemical bonds, and bio‐inspired ways, to eventual applications, like wound closure, sensors, soft robots, and tissue repair. Meanwhile, it is anticipated that these approaches could spur sparks for fabricating appropriate tough adhesives under different circumstances.

Abstract:<p>Over the last few decades, gel with excellent characteristics and functions have attracted considerable interests of researchers for potential applications in various fields such as cosmetics, energy saving, biomedicine, electronic devices, etc. The applications of the gel are not only attributed to the biocompatible, controllability, conductivity and hydrophilic properties, but also significant rely on the strong adhesion on various substrate surfaces. When used in the field of adhesives, gel has excellent performances that ordinary adhesives cannot achieve. This review provides comprehensive information on characterizing the adhesion properties and the factors affecting the adhesion properties of gels. Several summaries of adhesion strength and the method of gel adhesion to different materials were provided. According to the different properties of the gel, the current applications of the gel in the field of biomedicine, underwater adhesion, coating and wearable devices are discussed and prospected. We also explore the latest research progress of de-bonding and classify the current ways of gel de-bonding. Finally, we emphasize the current challenges and highlight the prospects of the adhesion gel, which may provide valuable references for the subsequent researches.</p>

Abstract:Hydrogels are crosslinked polymer chains with three-dimensional (3D) network structures, which can absorb relatively large amounts of fluid. Because of the high water content, soft structure, and porosity of hydrogels, they closely resemble living tissues. Research in recent years shows that hydrogels have been applied in various fields, such as agriculture, biomaterials, the food industry, drug delivery, tissue engineering, and regenerative medicine. Along with the underlying technology improvements of hydrogel development, hydrogels can be expected to be applied in more fields. Although not all hydrogels have good biodegradability and biocompatibility, such as synthetic hydrogels (polyvinyl alcohol, polyacrylamide, polyethylene glycol hydrogels, etc.), their biodegradability and biocompatibility can be adjusted by modification of their functional group or incorporation of natural polymers. Hence, scientists are still interested in the biomedical applications of hydrogels due to their creative adjustability for different uses. In this review, we first introduce the basic information of hydrogels, such as structure, classification, and synthesis. Then, we further describe the recent applications of hydrogels in 3D cell cultures, drug delivery, wound dressing, and tissue engineering.

Abstract:The adhesiveness of hydrogels is urgently required in various biomedical applications such as medical patches, tissue sealants, and flexible electronic devices. However, biological tissues are often wet, soft, movable, and easily damaged. These features pose difficulties for the construction of adhesive hydrogels for medical use. In nature, organisms adhere to unique strategies, such as reversible sucker adhesion in octopuses and nontoxic and firm catechol chemistry in mussels, which provide many inspirations for medical hydrogels to overcome the above challenges. In this review, we systematically classify bioadhesion strategies into structure-related and molecular-related ones, which cover almost all known bioadhesion paradigms. We outline the principles of these strategies and summarize the corresponding designs of medical adhesive hydrogels inspired by them. Finally, conclusions and perspectives concerning the development of this field are provided. For the booming bio-inspired adhesive hydrogels, this review aims to summarize and analyze the various existing theories and provide systematic guidance for future research from an innovative perspective.

Abstract:A hydrogel is a polymer material with a porous network structure, which allows the hydrogel to swell rapidly underwater without dissolving. This unique property of hydrogels lays the foundation for their application in underwater adhesion. However, due to the existence of the hydration layer, the interaction between the hydrogel and the adherend surface is seriously hindered, and the underwater adhesion ability of the hydrogel is severely weakened. In the past few decades, various hydrogels for underwater adhesion have been developed, among which the underwater adhesion mechanisms of natural organisms have provided a steady stream of inspiration for researchers to design underwater adhesion hydrogels. In this review, we first summarize the adhesion mechanism and design strategies of underwater adhesion hydrogels, and then introduce the currently common experimental methods to test the adhesion strength and adhesion toughness of underwater adhesion hydrogels. According to the development trend in recent years, we summarize the common application fields of underwater adhesion hydrogels. Finally, we present our views on the challenges of hydrogels for underwater adhesion, and provide an outlook on future research directions. This review provides a comprehensive overview of underwater adhesion hydrogels, which will provide rational guidelines for the design and fabrication of underwater adhesion hydrogels.

Abstract:Hydrogel is a class of biomaterials that is widely adopted in tissue engineering due to its versatility and biocompatibility in mimicking natural tissue properties. For these hydrogels, the ability to adhere in wet and underwater conditions would be beneficial since physiological environment is in general wet or even underwater. As a result, various chemical, physical, and structural principles are exploited to modify the adhesiveness of existing hydrogels. These include catechol adhesion, hydrophobic modification, or microneedles, and more. Yet, to yield optimal performances, the adhesion strategies have to be designed to match the properties of the tissues to be applied on, and at the same time fulfil the requirements of the biomedical application. To give a systematical overview in determining the appropriate adhesion strategies, we first summarize major factors in facilitating wet and underwater adhesion for hydrogels, then comment on the difference in wet adhesive hydrogels among common clinical scenarios in literature. After that, we discuss the current trends and possible improvements in commercialized hydrogels, and finally comment on how adhesiveness could enhance hydrogel applications as other aspect of hydrogels made its progress. Through this review, we hope to provide a holistic view on the role of adhesion strategies in different biomedical applications, and hence to help identify actionable clinical scenarios that underwater and wet adhesive hydrogels could improve upon.

Abstract:In this mini‐review, we critically explore the design schemes, chemical strategies for wet adhesion, and biomedical applications of multifunctional polymeric hydrogel patches. We also discuss the potential future of these bioactive 3D constructs in tissue engineering and drug delivery. The accompanying graphical abstract highlights the multifunctional nature of emerging hydrogel patches and displays their potential applications. Traditional patches, such as sticking plaster or acrylic adhesives used for over a hundred years, lack functionality. To address this issue of poor functionality, adhesive hydrogel patches have emerged as an efficient bioactive multifunctional alternative. Hydrogels are three‐dimensional, water‐swellable, and polymeric materials closely resembling the native tissue architecture. The physicochemical properties of hydrogels can be modified easily, allowing them to be suitable for various biomedical applications. Moreover, adhesive properties can be imparted to hydrogels through physicochemical manipulations, making them ideal candidates for supplementing or replacing traditional sticking plaster. As a result, sticky hydrogel patches are widely used for transdermal drug delivery and have even found commercial purposes. Beyond transdermal delivery, such hydrogel patches have also found applications in cardiac therapy, cancer research, and biosensing, among other applications. In this mini‐review, we critically discuss the challenges of fabricating multifunctional adhesive hydrogel patches. Furthermore, we introduce some of the chemical strategies involved with fabricating the patches. We also review their emerging biomedical applications. Finally, we explore their potential future in the flourishing field of tissue engineering and drug delivery.

Abstract:The prospective applications of chitosan-based hydrogels (CBHs), a category of biocompatible and biodegradable materials, in biomedical disciplines such as tissue engineering, wound healing, drug delivery, and biosensing have garnered great interest. The synthesis and characterization processes used to create CBHs play a significant role in determining their characteristics and effectiveness. The qualities of CBHs might be greatly influenced by tailoring the manufacturing method to get certain traits, including porosity, swelling, mechanical strength, and bioactivity. Additionally, characterization methods aid in gaining access to the microstructures and properties of CBHs. Herein, this review provides a comprehensive assessment of the state-of-the-art with a focus on the affiliation between particular properties and domains in biomedicine. Moreover, this review highlights the beneficial properties and wide application of stimuli-responsive CBHs. The main obstacles and prospects for the future of CBH development for biomedical applications are also covered in this review.

Abstract:A single because of their distinctive traits, hydrogels have become the most preferred materials for biomedical applications today. Hydrogels are three-dimensional hydrophilic polymeric networks with a high water-holding capacity as well as the ability to store biological fluids. The specific structure and swelling behavior of hydrogel largely influence the water holding and biological properties. The advantageous properties of hydrogels like flexibility, versatility, stimuli-responsive and soft structure make them versatile materials for medical applications. However, extreme water content, porous nature, and smooth in consistency are closely simulated living tissue than other alternative biomaterials. Such a close resemblance of hydrogels triggers several chances in the biomedical field. Hydrogels have a wide footprint in day today products but still their significant use yet not completely explored. Hydrogels have a well-demonstrated appreciable theatrical role in wound healing, contact lenses, tissue engineering, and many hygiene products. But commercially still hydrogels have not been well-explored in tissue engineering and drug delivery.
