Abstract:Zn-doped SnO2 nanoparticles have been synthesized by the chemical precipitation method with the Zn contents (x) of 1, 2 and 4 wt.%. The nanoparticles are crystalline in all cases, with the average particle size decreasing from 13.4 nm to 7.71 nm as the Zn concentration increases. The visible photoluminescence emission is observed in Zn-doped SnO2 nanoparticles, with larger emission intensity at elevated Zn content. The dielectric constant has a strong doping dependence, which is evidently enhanced with increasing Zn content. Magnetization measurements reveal the enhancement in saturation magnetization and remanence magnetization, while the reduction in coercive field is observed with increasing amount of Zn dopant. The variation of optical, dielectric and magnetic properties is due to the incorporation of Zn in SnO2 with smaller particle size and higher defect density. The present study clearly reveals the doping-induced ferromagnetism in Zn-doped SnO2 nanoparticles, having applications in ultrahigh dielectric materials, high frequency devices and spintronics.

Abstract:Nanoparticles of tin oxide (SnO 2 ) doped with iron oxide (α-Fe 2 O 3 ) and Europium oxide (Eu 2 O 3 ) were synthesized through the solid-state synthesis method. The phase analysis confirms the tetragonal rutile phase for all samples using X-ray diffraction (XRD). The luminescence intensity and expansion of lattice depend on doping percentage, which validates the successful blending of Fe and Eu in SnO 2 lattice. The lattice dislocation and strain are calculated using the Williamson–Hall (WH) parcel, which also supports the development of the grain boundary in the doped samples. An increase in a large number of recombination centers leads to quenching in optical spectra by using the photoluminescence (PL) spectrum, and the shift in the band gap estimated from UV–visible absorption spectra confirms the impact of the grain boundary. A vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM) under the physical properties measurement system (PPMS) confirms room temperature ferromagnetism RTFM, and a scanning electron microscope (SEM) showed clear images of grain boundaries. Conductivity studies show an increase in resistance to Fe/Eu doping. Among all the tailored samples, Sn (1− x ) Fe x /EuO 2 , for x = 0.04 wt. % and 0.02 wt. % proved as a potential candidate for magneto-opto-electronic, i.e., spintronics device applications.

Abstract:Co-doped SnO2 nanoparticles have been prepared by co-precipitation method. The thermal annealing of the nanoparticles was carried out in different atmospheres at 500 degrees C. The effects of annealing atmospheres on the microstructure and photoluminescence properties were investigated. Structural analyses reveal that all the samples consist of pure rutile tetragonal phase which would not change after annealing. The quality of nanoparticles is improved by thermal annealing. During the N-2 annealing, N ions incorporate the SnO2 lattice to substitute the Sn4+ site and form O-Sn-N bonding. The concentration of oxygen vacancies would be enhanced under N-2 and vacuum annealing and passivated under O-2 annealing. The orange band emission abruptly decrease its intensity after annealing in O-2.

Abstract:ZnO nanoarrays (ZNAs)and tin-doped ZnO nanorod arrays(ZNAs∶Sn)were synthesized by hydro-thermal method on seeded catalyst layer prepared by spin coating method.The effect of Sn doping in ZnO nano-rod arrays (ZNAs)was investigated by X-ray diffraction,scanning electron microscopy,optical transmittance spectra and ellipsometer,and the Bruggeman effective medium approximation (EMA)theory was employed to model porous columnar structures of ZNAs to acquire the optical constants of our samples.Compared with the pure ZNAs,the ZNAs∶Sn have a higher transmittance at the wavelength range 300-800 nm.Calculating with the global standard spectrum (AM1.5),the 5% doped ZNAs∶Sn has the highest energy of transmission at the wavelength 300-800 nm,which is 1.6 times as the value that the pure ZNAs has.
Oxygen vacancy luminescence and band gap narrowing driven by Ce ion doping with variable valence in SnO2 nanocrystals

Abstract:Although considerable research works have witnessed the important modulations of oxygen vacancies on the optical, electrical, and magnetic properties of SnO2 nanostructures, it is not easy to control oxygen vacancy defects in such systems.The difficulty stems from that oxygen vacancy is a kind of atomic defect, and its distribution is sensitive to process conditions and external factors, which makes direct characterization and purposeful control difficult. The purpose of this work on Ce-doped SnO2 nanocrystals is to investigate the tolerance of the host lattice to Ce ions, the population and evolution of Ce3+/Ce4+ ions, and the possibility to adjust oxygen vacancies by Ce3+ ions, and then focus on the influence of oxygen vacancy defects on the band gap and luminescence performance. As Ce doping concentration increases from 0 to 12 at.%, the doped system changes from Ce3+ dominated at low doping amount (≤3 at.%) to Ce3+/Ce4+ coexistence at medium doping concentration (3 at.% ∼ 9 at.%), to occurrence of CeO2 impurity phase at over doping (∼12 at.%). The optimum doping occurs at 6 at.%, which corresponds to the saturated critical point of Ce3+ content and the maximum oxygen vacancy concentration. Importantly, the oxygen vacancies in the current Ce-doped SnO2 nanocrystals is directly regulated by the Ce3+ ion concentration on the Sn sites, which plays an important role in the band gap tuning and visible light emission. With Ce concentration increasing from 0 to 12 at.%, the band gap monotonicity decreases from 3.36 eV to 3.12 eV, while the intensity of the oxygen vacancy luminescence band first increases and then decreases, with the turning point at 6 at.%. Both band gap narrowing effect and enhanced emission indicate that Ce-doped SnO2 should be a promising method to design and manufacture visible light responsive SnO2 based optoelectronic materials by manipulating oxygen vacancy defects.

Oxygen vacancy-mediated room temperature ferromagnetism in Sr-doped SnO 2 nanoparticles

Abstract:Sn 1− x Sr x O 2 nanoparticles (NPs) were synthesized by the sol–gel method in the present work. X-ray diffraction analyses reveal that Sr atoms are incorporated into the SnO 2 NPs without forming secondary phase with Sr concentration up to 5 at.%. The room temperature photoluminescence measurements indicate that Sr doping increases the number of singly charged oxygen vacancies (V O + ) in SnO 2 NPs due to the different ionic radii of Sr 2+ and Sn 4+ . Both pure and Sr-doped SnO 2 NPs are ferromagnetic and the largest saturation magnetization of 6.98 × 10 −4 emu/g has been observed in Sn 0.95 Sr 0.05 O 2 NPs which has the largest concentration of V O + defects. The correlation between the induced V O + defects and the enhanced ferromagnetism implies that the observed ferromagnetic ordering in Sn 1− x Sr x O 2 NPs is connected with V O + defects. Meanwhile, air-annealing of the samples resulting in a significant suppression of the ferromagnetism further supports this point.

Abstract:ZnSnO 3 doped with Eu 2+ and Eu 3+ is among the few host materials capable of accommodating both Eu 3+ and Eu 2+ ions, making it a promising candidate for white light-emitting diodes (WLEDs). In this communication, spinel cubic ZnSnO 3 : Eu 3+ (1-9 mol%) NPs are synthesized by Aloe vera mediated solution combustion method followed by calcination at 600 o C for 3hrs. The crystallite size decreases from 14.09 to 7.66 nm with an increase in dopant concentration. The surface morphology examined from field emission scanning electron microscope consists of bigger and smaller irregular-sized and shaped NPs with agglomeration. The optical energy band gap determined from Tauc's plot was found to be increased from 3.078 to 3.083 eV with an increase in dopant concentration. The photoluminescence (PL) emission excited under 311 nm consists peaks at 415 and 493 nm which can be attributed to 4f 6 5d 1 (T 2g ) → 4f 7 8 S 7/2 transition of Eu 2+ . The another emission peak appeared at 628 nm corresponds to 5 D 0 → 7 F 2 transition of Eu 3+ ion. The existence of Eu 2+ and Eu 3+ is further confirmed through the X-ray photon spectroscopy measurements. The CIE coordinates lie well within the white region. The average CCT value is 7114 K showing a cooler appearance. Thus the synthesized sample might be a promising candidate in display as well as in white light-emitting diodes. Oxygen evolution reaction (OER) investigations confirm the exceptional performance of ZnSnO 3 :Eu (1-9 mol%) nanoparticles, showcasing impressively low overpotentials (318-333 mV) and minimal Tafel slopes (56-63 mV/dec). Chronoamperometry analysis demonstrates remarkable electrochemical stability over 20 hours with a consistent current density of 24.05-16.80 mA/cm −2 . Cyclic voltammetry analysis reveals insights into redox reactions, electrode kinetics, and overall electrochemical behavior. Improved ionic transport and supercapacitance performance (47.1 -101.3 F/g) at lower scan rates indicate potential applications in energy storage and display technology.

Abstract:ZnO is a semiconductor with a wide range of applications and often the properties are modified by metal-ion doping. The distribution of dopant atoms within the ZnO crystal strongly affects the optical and magnetic properties making it crucial to describe the structure down to the atomic level. This study reveals the dopant structure and contents in Eu-doped ZnO nano-phase sponges with up to 20% EuO1.5. High-resolution STEM imaging, EELS and electron pair-distribution function (ePDF) provided atomic distances. The Eu was distributed over the ZnO:Eu crystals, but in addition, an amorphous inter-crystalline phase was observed, especially in the 20% Eu sample. The ePDF analysis revealed the presence of non-periodic Eu(III)-oxide clusters and that there were significant changes in Eu coordination between the samples, which is ascribed as due to the inter-crystalline phase. The proposed method offers a potential characterization routine for a detailed investigation of complex doped materials.

Formation of B2C Channel Blending Decisions: Trust vs. Efficiency

Abstract:Trust is known to be vital to business to customer (B2C) electronic commerce adoption. However, its role in customers’ blending of the online and traditional channels is largely unexplored. In this study, we progress beyond single channel adoption and investigate the interplay of trust and perceived efficiency on channel blending. Our conceptual framework models channel blending as a dynamic construct, which evolves across purchase stages based on the evaluative outcome of a trade-off between trust and perceived efficiency. Specifically, we argue that trust does not necessarily predict channel preference when the use of a channel does not justify transaction efficiency. Our paper contributes to the IS literature by identifying how and what IT artifacts can be configured to build trust in online channels. Drawing on the transaction costs economics framework, we also present methodological contributions by operationalizing perceived efficiency in terms of economic and behavioral costs.

Abstract:SnO₂ and F doped SnO₂ (FTO) nanoparticles (NPs) have been synthesized by the hydrothermal method with subsequent annealing at 500 °C. The microstructure and photoluminescence (PL) property of SnO₂ and FTO NPs have been investigated, and an assumption model about the luminescence process of FTO NPs has been proposed. All of the SnO₂ and FTO NPs possess polycrystalline tetragonal rutile structures, and the average size in the range of 16.5-20.2 nm decreases with the increasing of F doping content. The doping element F is shown a uniformly distribution by electron energy loss spectroscopy (EELS) mapping. The oxygen vacancy concentration becomes higher as is verified by Raman and X-ray photoelectron spectra (XPS). There are three kinds of oxygen chemical states in SnO₂ and FTO NPs, in which Oα corresponds to oxygen vacancies. The room temperature PL position is observed to be independent of F doping content. F- may substitute O2- into the SnO₂ lattice by generating F O + and one extra e-, which can combine with V O + or V O + + to generate V O 0 or V O + to ensure charge balance.

As the calcination temperature is elevated from 400 to 800 °C, the average particle size increases from 12.26 to 34.43 nm, with enhanced grain growth and crystalline quality. At low temperatures, these nanoparticles are in a rather oxygen-poor state revealing the presence of many O vacancies and Sn interstitials in SnO2 nanoparticles as in this case Sn+2 is not oxidized completely to Sn+4 and small sized nano particles have more specific surface area, hence defects are more prominent. The oxygen content increases steadily with increasing temperature, with the Sn:O atomic ratio very near to the stoichiometric value of 1:2 at high temperatures suggesting the low density of defects. The optical band gap energies of all SnO2 nanoparticles are in the visible light region, decreasing from 2.89 to 1.35 eV, while room temperature ferromagnetism and electrical conductivity are enhanced with reduced temperatures. The dielectric constant (εr) exhibited dispersion behaviour and the Debye’s relaxation peaks were observed in tanδ. The variation of dielectric properties and ac conductivity revealed that the dispersion is due to Maxwell–Wagner interfacial polarization and hopping of charge carriers between Sn+2/Sn+4. The narrowed band gap energies and enhanced ferromagnetism are mainly attributed to the increase of defects density (e.g., oxygen vacancies). The presence of oxygen vacancies is confirmed by EDX, Raman, PL, XPS, and UV–Vis spectra. The band gap of 1.35 eV is the smallest value for SnO2 reported so far. Chalcogen Doping in SnO2: A DFT Investigation of Optical and Electronic Properties for Enhanced Photocatalytic Applications

Abstract:Tin dioxide (SnO2) is an important transparent conductive oxide (TCO), highly desirable for its use in various technologies due to its earth abundance and non-toxicity. It is studied for applications such as photocatalysis, energy harvesting, energy storage, LEDs, and photovoltaics as an electron transport layer. Elemental doping has been an established method to tune its band gap, increase conductivity, passivate defects, etc. In this study, we apply density functional theory (DFT) calculations to examine the electronic and optical properties of SnO2 when doped with members of the oxygen family, namely S, Se, and Te. By calculating defect formation energies, we find that S doping is energetically favourable in the oxygen substitutional position, whereas Se and Te prefer the Sn substitutional site. We show that S and Se substitutional doping leads to near gap states and can be an effective way to reduce the band gap, which results in an increased absorbance in the optical part of the spectrum, leading to improved photocatalytic activity, whereas Te doping results in several mid-gap states.

Abstract:SnO2-x nanocrystals were prepared using a simple hydrothermal method by controlling the proportions of Sn4+/Sn2+ precursors. Due to the doping of Sn2+, the oxygen vacancies could be introduced into SnO2 nanocrystals, and their concentration can be controlled by the amount of doping Sn2+. The structural characteristics of SnO2-x nanocrystals was investigated by X-ray diffraction, Fourier transform infrared spectra, Raman spectra, UV-vis diffuse reflectance, photoluminescence spectra and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The results reveal that the bridging O-vacancies are dominant in the pure SnO2 while the in-plane O-vacancies play a key role in the SnO2-x. Meanwhile, the higher Sn2+ concentration, the more structural disorder was produced. According to XPS analysis, the presence of oxygen defects will change the electronic structure of SnO2-x nanocrystals, which will lead to the valence band moving up and the smaller band gap. The rich oxygen vacancies, the structural disorder and the narrow band gap should greatly improve the visible light harvesting, and result in the excellent photocatalytic activity.

Abstract:Doped with different rare earth elements (Dy3+, Sm3+, Yb2+, Eu3+ and Gd2+), Zn2SnO4 nano-structures were synthesized using sol-gel process. Dopants were introduced in the prepared samples at concentrations of 0.034g. X-Rays Diffraction (XRD) results checked the crystallographic nature of the prepared materials. Using Scherrer's equation, the particles sizes were calculated and found to be almost 24 nm. The chemical bond types were identified through the Fourier Transform Infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). The dopants effect on the absorbance spectra was explored via the UV-Visible spectroscopy. The energy band gap (Eopt) of Zn2SnO4 decreased (from 3.89 eV to 2.80 eV) with dopants addition for direct transitions and ranged between 3.93-2.25 eV for indirect transitions. Similarly, Urbach energies (EU) were found within the range of 0.70- 0.42 eV. Results of the effect of the suggested dopants at those concentrations on the structure and optical properties of Zn2SnO4 could be considered to be utilized in the correct form in the industrial applications.

The Luminescence Enhancement Of Eu3+ Ion And Sno2 Nanocrystal Co-Doped Sol-Gel Sio2 Films

Abstract:SnO2 nanocrystal and rare-earth Eu3+ ion co-doped SiO2 thin films are prepared by sol-gel and spin coating methods. The formation of tetragonal rutile structure SnO2 nanocrystals with a uniform distribution is confirmed by X-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy is used to investigate the densities of the hydroxyl groups, and it is found that the emission intensity from the D-5(0)-F-7(2) transitions of the Eu3+ ions is enhanced by two orders of magnitude due to energy transfer from the oxygen-vacancy-related defects of the SnO2 nanocrystals to nearby Eu3+ ions. The influences of the amounts of Sn and the post-annealing temperatures are systematically evaluated to further understand the mechanism of energy transfer. The luminescence intensity ratio of Eu3+ ions from electric dipole transition and magnetic dipole transition indicate the different probable locations of Eu3+ ions in the sol-gel thin film, which are further discussed based on temperature-dependent photoluminescence measurements.
Impact of boron and indium doping on the structural, electronic and optical properties of SnO2

Abstract:Abstract Tin dioxide (SnO 2 ), due to its non-toxicity, high stability and electron transport capability represents one of the most utilized metal oxides for many optoelectronic devices such as photocatalytic devices, photovoltaics (PVs) and light-emitting diodes (LEDs). Nevertheless, its wide bandgap reduces its charge carrier mobility and its photocatalytic activity. Doping with various elements is an efficient and low-cost way to decrease SnO 2 band gap and maximize the potential for photocatalytic applications. Here, we apply density functional theory (DFT) calculations to examine the effect of p-type doping of SnO 2 with boron (B) and indium (In) on its electronic and optical properties. DFT calculations predict the creation of available energy states near the conduction band, when the dopant (B or In) is in interstitial position. In the case of substitutional doping, a significant decrease of the band gap is calculated. We also investigate the effect of doping on the surface sites of SnO 2 . We find that B incorporation in the (110) does not alter the gap while In causes a considerable decrease. The present work highlights the significance of B and In doping in SnO 2 both for solar cells and photocatalytic applications.

Abstract:The paper presents a simple, reproducible, controllable, and direct wet chemical synthesis method for Zn1−xEuxO nanoparticles. The full understanding of decomposition mechanism of the as-obtained oxalate precipitate was achieved based on the thermal analysis correlated with the evolved gas analysis and FTIR spectroscopy. The structure, morphology, and optical luminescent properties of the Zn1−xEuxO nanoparticles have been investigated by X-ray diffraction, Raman spectroscopy, HRTEM, SAED, XPS, and PL. The XRD studies reveal the formation of a hexagonal wurtzite-type structure. The presence of Eu2O3 cubic structure can be observed up to 0.5 mol% Eu, suggesting that the solubility of the divalent or trivalent Eu into the ZnO lattice is limited. The formation of Eu2O3 secondary phase at higher Eu concentration is sustained by Raman spectroscopy and XPS, as well. The TEM investigations of the Eu-doped ZnO samples illustrate the presence of aggregates with different shapes and dimensions formed by agglomerated spherical and polyhedral nanoparticles with sizes ranging from 20 to 120 nm. The effect of europium concentration on the structural and morphological characteristics, as well as on the luminescent properties was studied with special emphasis on the europium chemical states—Eu2+ and Eu3+. The PL measurements sustain the presence of both divalent and trivalent europium ions into the ZnO host lattice and, at the same time, an increase of its defects density induced by the dopant presence.

Effects of Eu3+-doped Concentration and Matricial Oxygen Vacancies on the Luminescence Properties of Ca2-xEuxSnO4

Abstract:Ca2-xSnO4∶xEu3+(x=0, 0. 001, 0. 005, 0. 01, 0. 015, 0. 02)phosphors were prepared by solid-state reaction method in air and vacuum atmosphere, respectively. The influence of Eu3+-doped concentration and oxygen vacancies on the luminescence properties were investigated. With the increas-ing of Eu3+ concentration, the emission intensity increases and the two main emission peaks at 614 nm and 618 nm gradually become one at about 616 nm. In the excitation spectra of Ca2-x SnO4∶xEu3+, the band between 200 nm and 295 nm is charge transfer band of Eu3+-O2-. The peak of charge transfer band moves from 271 nm to 286 nm with increasing Eu3+ concentration. In addition, under the same concen-tration of Eu3+, the luminescence intensity of samples sintered in vacuum is twice as much as that in air. Because the oxygen vacancies increase in the samples sintered in vacuum atmosphere, the conduction electron density rises, which leads to the higher emission intensity. Furthermore, the increase of electron trap leads to the improvement of afterglow properties of Ca2-x SnO4∶xEu3+.

Abstract:Eu3+ ions embedded in silica thin films co-doped with SnO2 nanocrystals were fabricated by sol–gel and spin-coating methods. SnO2 nanocrystals with controllable sizes were synthesized through precisely controlling the Sn concentrations. The influences of doping and annealing conditions on the photoluminescence intensity from SnO2 nanocrystals are systematically investigated. The effective energy transfer from the defect states of SnO2 nanocrystals to nearby Eu3+ ions has revealed by the selective photoluminescence excitation spectra. The efficiency of the Förster resonance energy transfer is evaluated by the time-resolved photoluminescence measurements, which is about 29.1 % based on the lifetime tests of the SnO2 emission.
