Abstract:This paper presents the development of an aeroelastic analysis approach for the dynamic response of a Z-shaped folding wing. The structural model is established by the finite element method and the component mode synthesis method by accounting for the configuration changing effects on the inertial and stiffness characteristics. The aerodynamic model is directly built using the continuous-time state-space unsteady vortex lattice method. The coupling relationship between structural and aerodynamics models is proposed innovatively with interpolation between structural generalized coordinates and incremental normal vectors on the collocation points of aerodynamic panels. The resulting aeroelastic model with the state-space equation can be used for flutter and dynamic response analysis by considering a rapid folding/unfolding process. The analysis results show that the folding and unfolding processes have opposite effects on both the aerodynamic load and aeroelastic characteristics. Moreover, the effects become more significant with an increasing morphing rate.

Abstract:The spanwise morphing wing can change its aerodynamic shape to suit its flight environment, thereby having the potential to improve the flight performance of the aircraft, especially in gusty conditions. To investigate the potential of morphing wings, the aerodynamic performance of a spanwise morphing wing with a flapping wingtip in a gust environment was analyzed in this paper. The aerodynamic characteristics of the morphing wing are hard to measure accurately, and thus a wind tunnel test was carried out to study the influences of morphing parameters, such as the morphing length, amplitude and frequency on the gust alleviation effect. The flow mechanism of the designed spanwise morphing wing was analyzed in detail by the instantaneous lift results of the wind tunnel test and the flow field results of the CFD method. The results have shown that with appropriate morphing parameters, the spanwise morphing wing designed in this paper can effectively achieve gust alleviation during flight. The conclusions obtained in this paper can be useful guidance for the design of morphing aircraft.

Abstract:This paper proposes a cantilevered multi-layer parallel morphing wing based on Macro-Fiber Composite (MFC) for Micro Aerial Vehicle (MAV). Based on the three-dimensional homogenization parameters of the MFC material, a large deformation mechanical model of the MFC Pre-compressed Bimorph Actuator (MFC-PBA) and the morphing wing were developed using the finite element method (FEM). FEM results show that in the case of the driving voltages of -500 V/1500 V, 18 N and 27 N axial compression force respectively applied to the two side bimorphs and the middle bimorph, the free displacement and blocked force of the morphing wing achieved 26.22 mm and 1.59 N, respectively. The free displacement magnified by two times compared with that in the case without axial force, while the blocking force remains the same. Thus, the design space has been increased by two times.

Abstract:The aeroelastic model of a folding wing varies with different configurations, so it actually represents a parameter-varying system. Firstly, a new approach based on interpolation of local models is proposed to generate the linear parameter-varying model of a folding wing. This model is capable of predicting the aeroelastic responses during the slow morphing process and is suitable for subsequent control synthesis. The underlying inconsistencies among local linear time-invariant (LTI) models are solved through the modal matching of structural modes and the special treatment of the rational functions in aerodynamic models. Once the local LTI models are represented in a coherent state-space form, the aeroservoelastic (ASE) model at any operating point can be immediately generated by the matrix interpolation technique. Next, based on the present ASE model, the design of a parameterized controller for suppressing the gust-induced vibration is studied. The receptance method is applied to derive fixed point controllers, and the effective independence method is adopted and modified for optimal sensor placement in variable configurations, which can avoid solving ill-conditioned feedback gains. Numerical simulation demonstrates the effectiveness of the proposed interpolation-based modeling approach, and the parameterized controller exhibits a good gust mitigation effect within a wide parameter-varying range. This paper provides an effective and practical solution for modeling and control of the parameterized aeroelastic system.

Abstract:A folding wing morphing aircraft should complete the folding and unfolding process of its wings while in flight. Calculating the hinge moments during the morphing process is a critical aspect of a folding wing design. Most previous studies on this problem have adopted steady-state or quasi-steady-state methods, which do not simulate the free-flying morphing process. In this study, we construct an aeroelastic flight simulation platform based on the secondary development of ADAMS software to simulate the flight-folding process of a folding wing aircraft. A flexible multibody dynamic model of the folding wing structure is established in ADAMS using modal neutral files, and the doublet lattice method is developed to generate aerodynamic influence coefficient matrices that are suitable for the flight-folding process. The user subroutine is utilized, aerodynamic loading is realized in ADAMS, and an aeroelastic flight simulation platform of a folding wing aircraft is built. On the basis of this platform, the flight-folding process of the aircraft is simulated, the hinge moments of the folding wings are calculated, and the influences of the folding rate and the aircraft’s center of gravity (c.g.) position on the results are investigated. Results show that the steady-state method is applicable to the slow folding process. For the fast folding process, the steady-state simulation errors of the hinge moments are substantially large, and a transient method is required to simulate the flight-folding process. In addition, the c.g. position considerably affects the hinge moments during the folding process. Given that the c.g. position moves aft, the maximum hinge moments of the inner and outer wings constantly increase.

Abstract:This paper investigates the effect of wingtip bending morphing on gust-induced aerodynamics based on the fluid–structure interaction (FSI) method at Re = 40 000. First, an explicit spatiotemporal numerical model for a wingtip bending morphing on a wing with a semi-aspect ratio of 4 is deduced, considering geometrical nonlinearity under large morphing amplitude. A modal-based FSI framework is developed to consider the elastic deformation, active wingtip morphing, and gust. The shear-stress transport-γ model is introduced. The above FSI method is validated by gust response experimental results. The mitigation effects of active bending morphing on gust-induced aerodynamics at different phase offset, gust ratios (GR), and flare angles are investigated. Under GR = 0.2 and flare angle = 0, wingtip bending morphing achieves the best mitigation effect when the phase offset is π/2. As GR increases to 0.4, the optimum phase offset shifts to π/3 and the alleviation rate decreases. The mitigation rate increases with the flare angle. Under GR = 0.4 and flare angle = 30°, the optimum phase offset is π/6, in which case the lift response is reduced by 37%, and wing root bending moment response is reduced by 73% relative to the baseline case. The flow field and vortex evolution result infers that the wingtip bending morphing decreases the spanwise width of the leading-edge vortex and reduces the area of low-pressure zones on the suction side, thereby mitigating gust-induced aerodynamics. The results indicate that active wingtip bending morphing has great potential for gust load alleviation for future aircraft.

Abstract:<p>This study proposes the parametric active aeroelastic control of a folding wing, which is a promising concept of morphing wings, by integrating the parameterized aeroservoelastic model and the receptance-based control strategy. It starts with establishing the parameterized aeroservoelastic model of the folding wing with respect to its folding angle and air speed. The transfer functions between the embedded sensors and the actuators of the folding wing are then efficiently obtained using the parameterized aeroservoelastic model. Finally, control gains for varying folding angle and air speed of the wing are synthesized using the receptance method. The results of numerical analyses show that smooth evolutions of the control gains can be obtained over a wide range of folding angles and air speeds, although the dynamic behavior of the folding wing is sensitive to these parameters. In addition, the active aeroelastic control can effectively suppress aeroelastic vibrations and expand flutter boundaries of the folding wing. The benefit of the parametric active aeroelastic control for the folding wing, i.e., smoothly switching among the control laws without exciting undesirable vibrations is highlighted.</p>

Abstract:We present a design of a bird-inspired morphing wing aircraft, including bionic research, modeling, simulation and flight experiments. Inspired by birds and activated by a planar linkage, our proposed aircraft has three key states: gliding, descending and high-maneuverability. We build the aerodynamic model of the aircraft and analyze its mechanisms to find out a group of optimized parameters. Furthermore, we validate our design by Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) simulation based on Lattice-Boltzmann technology and determine three phases of the planar linkage for the three states. Lastly, we manufacture a prototype and conduct flight experiments to test the performance of the aircraft.

Abstract:<p>Morphing aircraft structures usually introduce greater compliance into aerodynamic sections, and therefore will affect the aeroelasticity with the potential risk of increased flutter. A low-fidelity model of an active camber morphing wing and its aeroelastic model are developed in order to investigate the potential critical speed by exploiting its chord-wise dimension and flexibility. Such a model may be used for conceptual design, where low fidelity models are used to explore and optimise a wide range of configurations. The morphing camber concept is implemented using a continuous representation of a two-segment structure with a rigid segment and a deformable part. The aeroelastic model is developed based on both steady and unsteady aerodynamic models, so that different parameters can be easily modified to examine changes in the flutter solutions. Of particular interest are the ratio of the morphing segment length to the chord, and its relative stiffness, as such morphing camber is potential operated using the deformable part as a flap. By comparing the results of the quasi-steady and unsteady aerodynamic models, it is shown that the quasi-steady aerodynamic model gives a more conservative prediction of the flutter speed. In addition, responses in phase space are simulated to show the fundamental aeroelastic behaviour of the morphing camber wing. It is also shown that the active compliant segment can be used to stabilise the morphing aircraft by using feedback control. This paper provides a system-level insight through mathematical modelling, parameter analysis and feedback control into dynamics applications of morphing camber.</p>

Abstract:The wings of birds exhibit multi-degree-of-freedom motions during flight. Among them, the flapping folding motion and chordwise passive deformation of the wings are prominent features of large birds in flight, contributing to their exceptional flight capabilities. This article presents a method for the fast and accurate calculation of folding passive torsional flapping wings in the early design stage. The method utilizes the unsteady three-dimensional panel method to solve the aerodynamic force and the linear beam element model to analyze the fluid–structure coupling problem. Performance comparisons of folding flapping wings with different kinematics are conducted, and the effects of various kinematic parameters on folding flapping wings are analyzed. The results indicate that kinematic parameters significantly influence the lift coefficient, thrust coefficient, and propulsion efficiency. Selecting the appropriate kinematic and geometric parameters is crucial for enhancing the efficiency of the folding flapping wing.

Abstract:The application of morphing wing enables vehicles to show better aerodynamic performance in various flight conditions. This article proposes a modular bilateral triangular pyramid (BTP) unit-based morphing wing skeleton (MWS) mechanism that may achieve continuous variable span-wise bend, span-wise twist, and sweep. A lockable morphing (LM) unit with the BTP unit is designed. Based on the Denavit-Hartenberg coordinate method and motion influence coefficient method, the kinematics of MWS mechanism is conducted. The theoretical models of the kinematic characteristics of the MWS mechanism during the three morphing patterns are obtained. The kinematic simulation models of three morphing configurations of the MWS mechanism are performed. The driving speed ratio of the linear actuator of span-wise bend and twist is analyzed during the twisting phase, and the analysis shows that there be a speed ratio minimizes the coupling bend angle. By comparing the results between the theoretical and simulation models, the accuracies of kinematic theoretical models under different morphing configurations are verified. At last, this article conducted a two-way fluid-structure interaction (FSI) analysis of morphing wing to obtain the influence of aerodynamic load on the flexible skin and skeleton mechanism, as well as the influence of structural deformation on the aerodynamic characteristics. Results show that the initial and swept states have the greatest impact on the out of plane bearing capacity of the flexible skin. In addition, the out-of-plane bulging deformation located at the trailing edge of the flexible skin is beneficial for improving aerodynamic performance, while the protrusion located at the leading edge increases air resistance. These findings provide important theoretical basis for the application of the MWS mechanism.

Abstract:Bioinspired morphing wings are part of a novel research direction offering greatly increased adaptability for use in unmanned aerial vehicles. Recent models published in the literature often rely on simplifications of the bird wing apparatus and fail to preserve many of the macroscopic morphological features. Therefore, a more holistic design approach could uncover further benefits of truly bioinspired bird wing models. With this issue in mind, a prototype inspired by crow wings (Corvus genus) is developed, which is capable of planform wing morphing. The prototype imitates the feather structure of real birds and replicates the folding motion with a carbon fiber reinforced polymer skeleton with one controllable degree of freedom. The mechanism supplies a smooth airfoil lifting surface through a continuous morphing motion between a fully extended and a folded state. When extended, it has an elliptic planform and emarginated slots between primary remiges. In the folded state, the wingspan is reduced by 50% with a 40% reduction in surface area and the aspect ratio decreases from 2.9 to 1.2. Experimental data from a subsonic wind tunnel investigation is presented for flow velocities ranging from 5 to 20 m s(-1), corresponding to Reynolds numbers between 0.7 x 10(5)-2.8 x 10(5). The wing is analyzed in the three static states (folded, intermediate, and extended) through aerodynamic coefficients and flow visualizations along the surface. The bioinspired design enables the wing to capture several phenomena found on real bird wings. Through its morphing capabilities and intrinsic softness, the wing can sustain large angles of attack with greatly delayed stall and maintain optimal performance at different velocities.

Abstract:Morphing wingtips have the potential to improve aircraft performance. By connecting the wingtips and the wings with a compliant structure, a continuous aerodynamic surface can be achieved for a better aerodynamic performance. However, how to maintain the shape-changing capability while keeping a high stiffness to carry aerodynamic loads is a key problem. In this paper, based on asymmetric stiffness, a type of single-row corrugated panel is designed to satisfy the limited space around the wingtip. A finite element model of the single-row corrugated panels is established, and parameter analysis is performed to investigate the impact of the thickness characteristics of the corrugated panel on the folding angle. The corrugated panel is then optimised to find the maximum folding angle. Based on the optimisation results, corrugated panels with asymmetric and symmetric stiffness are fabricated and tested. The results demonstrate that the asymmetric stiffness corrugated panels have the capability to increase the wingtip folding angle.

Abstract:The flexibility of insect wings and model wings in flapping-wing micro air vehicles (FWMAVs) is crucial to guarantee an economic flight. Since the wing deformation is bilaterally coupled with the aerodynamic force, conventional simulations on this fluid–structure interaction (FSI) problem mostly build up their models using computational fluid dynamics (CFD) and computational solid dynamics (CSD) methods, which requires high computational costs. Alternatively, an analytical model is proposed here for a quick estimate of the aerodynamic performance and passive deformation on flexible flapping wings. The deformation is simplified into a rigid-body rotation at the wing root, a spanwise twist, and a shortening along the span. The aerodynamic force is approximated by a predictive quasi-steady model and the spanwise twist is modeled using a quadratic polynomial. Results show that the introduction of wing flexibility can attenuate the lift generation due to the negative rotational lift and adverse translation–rotation coupling effect after each stroke reversal. The wing with moderate stiffness is recommended to achieve a high lift. An increase of aspect ratio and root cutoff can also enhance the dimensional lift generation, while the most economic wing design has an aspect ratio around 5 and no root cut-off. More importantly, the increase of flapping frequency can only result in a lift enhancement within certain limits. However, the power consumption keeps increasing as the frequency goes up, indicating a significant breakdown of performance. Our findings can uncover the role of wing flexibility in both insects and FWMAVs and therefore contribute to the design of FWMAVs.

Five models with different stiffness and tailoring properties are tested and the wing root bending moment at different conditions is compared to the response with locked hinge conditions to assess the impact on the gust load alleviation capabilities of the folding wingtip. The results show that the structural properties do not have an important impact on the peak load alleviation but the hinge release threshold and timing do. Releasing with the correct timing can reduce significantly the peak loads. However, the dynamics of the system are affected by this release: the flutter speed is decreased and, although the performance can improve, load oscillations increase, which can be considered detrimental for reasons such as fatigue.

Abstract:Aircraft performance can be improved using morphing wing technologies, in which the wing can be deployed and folded under flight conditions, providing a wide flight envelope, good fuel efficiency, and reducing the space required to store the aircraft. Because the deployment of the wing is a nonlinear-coupled motion comprising large rigid body motion and large elastic deformation, a nonlinear folding-wing model is required to perform the necessary time-domain deployment simulation, while a linear model is required to perform the frequency-domain flutter analysis. The objective of this paper is to propose a versatile model that can be applied to both the time-domain and frequency-domain analyses of a folding wing, based on flexible multibody dynamics (MBD) using absolute nodal coordinate formulation (ANCF) and unsteady aerodynamics. This new versatile model expands the application range of the flexible MBD using ANCF in time-domain simulation, allowing it to express the coupled motion of extremely large elastic deformations and large rigid body motions that arise in next-generation aircraft. The time-domain deployment simulation conducted using the proposed model is useful for parametric deployment-system design because the model has improved calculation time. In the frequency-domain flutter analysis of a folding wing, the flutter speed obtained from the proposed model agrees with that obtained from an experiment, with an error of 4.0%, showing promise for application in next-generation aircraft design.

Abstract:Calculating hinge moments during the morphing process is a critical aspect in the folding wing design. The deficiencies of the traditional flat-plate aerodynamic model in the calculation are expounded in this work, and a flight simulation platform based on a high-order panel method is established. On the basis of the platform, a typical flight-folding process of the aircraft is simulated, and the results of different aerodynamic models are compared. Results show that airfoil thickness has a great influence on the aerodynamic loading distribution of wing surfaces and thus affects the hinge moments during the folding process. The flat-plate method, which ignores the influence of the airfoil thickness, shows a great simulation error in hinge moment, whereas the high-order panel method can effectively describe the thickness effect and obtain reliable simulation results.

Abstract:A bionic flapping-wing aircraft model is designed in this study to achieve unfolding-bending effect of a bird’s wings during flight, realize active unfolding-bending movement, and demonstrate rapid return characteristic of flapping-bending motion. We use the new method of ADAMS and XFlow cosimulation to analyze its aerodynamic characteristics and investigate effects of flutter frequency, air flow velocity, fuselage angle of attack, and aileron torsion angle on its aerodynamic characteristics. Results showed that increasing the flapping frequency can significantly improve aerodynamic characteristics, increasing the air flow velocity will reduce aerodynamic characteristics, decreasing the fuselage angle of attack will reduce peak lift and increase peak thrust, and increasing the aileron torsion angle will reduce the rising resistance and increase forward thrust. The analysis results showed the excellent aerodynamic characteristics of the model.

Abstract:The large active wing deformation is a significant way to generate high aerodynamic forces required in bat flapping flight. Besides the twisting, the elementary morphing models of a bat wing are proposed, such as wing-bending in the spanwise direction, wing-cambering in the chordwise direction, and wing area-changing. A plate of aspect ratio 3 is used to model a bat wing and a three dimensional unsteady panel method is applied to predict the aerodynamic forces. It is found that the cambering model has a great positive influence on the lift, followed by area-changing model and then the bending model. The further study indicates that the vortex control is a main mechanism to produce high aerodynamic forces, and the mechanisms for the aerodynamic force enhancement are the asymmetry of the cambered wing and the amplifier effects of wing area-changing and wing bending. The lift and thrust are mainly generated during the downstroke and almost negligible forces during the upstroke by the integrated morphing model-wing.
