Abstract:Abstract Coupling high-capacity cathode and Li-anode with solid-state electrolyte has been demonstrated as an effective strategy for increasing the energy densities and safety of rechargeable batteries. However, the limited ion conductivity, the large interfacial resistance, and unconstrained Li-dendrite growth hinder the application of solid-state Li-metal batteries. Here, a poly(ether-urethane)-based solid-state polymer electrolyte with self-healing capability is designed to reduce the interfacial resistance and provides a high-performance solid-state Li-metal battery. With its dynamic covalent disulfide bonds and hydrogen bonds, the proposed solid-state polymer electrolyte exhibits excellent interfacial self-healing ability and maintains good interfacial contact. Full cells are assembled with the two integrated electrodes/electrolytes. As a result, the Li||Li symmetric cells exhibit stable long-term cycling for more than 6000 h, and the solid-state Li-S battery shows a prolonged cycling life of 700 cycles at 0.3 C. The use of ultrasound imaging technology shows that the interfacial contact of the integrated structure is much better than those of traditional laminated structure. This work provides an interesting interfacial dual-integrated strategy for designing high-performance solid-state Li-metal batteries.

Abstract:Developing a solid polymer electrolyte (SPE) combining superior interface stability with high ionic conductivity is still a challenge in the energy storage field. Herein, a series of novel self-healing solid polymer electrolytes were prepared by free radical photopolymerization with poly(ethylene glycol) methyl ether methacrylate and monomers containing borate. The reversible reaction induced by interesterification of borate ester endows the polymer electrolytes with excellent self-healing ability. The comb-like structure based on flexible poly(ethylene glycol) provides an amorphous state, which is conducive to lithium-ion transport. Further benefiting from the strong interaction between electron capture groups and anions of electrolyte salts, the borate-containing comb-shaped solid polymer electrolytes (PPBSPE) films display optimal ionic conductivity of 0.272 mS cm −1 at 60°C, satisfactory transfer number for lithium ion, wide working voltage window, and remarkable stability towards lithium metal. The initial discharge capacities of the cell based on PPBSPE reach 156.2 mAh g -1 at a current rate of 0.1C, and high Coulombic efficiency ( CE ) of 99.4 %. This enhancement is due to the introduction of borate to the comb-shaped polymer, which is beneficial to form a more suitable electrolyte that can stabilize and improve the performance of lithium metal batteries.

Abstract:PEO-based solid electrolytes are eagerly anticipated for being explored in batteries with remarkable performance. Their narrower electrochemical window and weak mechanical strength, however, limit the potential for wide application in safe and high-capacity electronic devices. Herein, a self-healing solid-state electrolyte () is fabricated by the incorporation of an imidazolium-based polymerized ionic liquid (poly(ethylene glycol) monomethacrylate (PEGMA)) block polymer into PEO, and the influence of copolymer configuration on electrochemical performances of the system is investigated in-depth. In addition to reducing the crystallinity of PEO, an inimitable orderly and orderless microphase separation structure is introduced in , which brings about a "green fast track" for Li-ion migration. This contributes to a lithium-ion transference number of 0.63 that is an unsurpassed level. The electrochemical stability window of the optimized can achieve 5.0 V (vs Li+/Li). As a result, the capacity and endurance discharge performances for based cells are significantly improved. Moreover, the bountiful charged ions on the scaffold endue the electrolyte with generous interactions, conferring the predominant adhesiveness toward lithium metal (the hanging weight = 200 g) and standout self-healing ability (recovering time <30 min, 60 °C). The restriction toward lithium dendrite is thus enhanced. The laminate polymer battery presents ascendant antifolding deformation ability and still exhibits good electrochemical performances after reiterative damage. Abstract:Compared with liquid electrolytes, the solid polymer electrolyte (SPE), which possesses improved thermal and mechanical stability, is believed the broadest potential application for satisfying the safety needs of advanced electrochemical devices. However, some breakable SPEs could lead to catastrophic failure of batteries that triggered by a short circuit. In the present contribution, a new class of SPE containing disulfide bonds and urea groups is reported. The hydrogen bonding between the urea groups and disulfide metathesis reaction endows the SPE with a high level of self-healing without external stimuli at room temperature as well as ultrafast self-healing at elevated temperatures. The completely healed SPE with extreme damage shows a high self-healing efficiency and no changes in the ionic conductivity and cycling performance of the solid-state lithium-metal/LiFePO<sub>4</sub> cell compared to the pristine one.

Abstract:Lithium metal batteries (LMBs) have generally become potential candidates for energy storage devices because of their high energy density. However, the practical applications of LMBs have been limited due to the low safety of liquid electrolytes. Compared to liquid electrolytes, solid-state polymer electrolytes (SPEs) have excellent mechanical strength. However, there is room for improvement because traditional PEO-based SPEs need more mechanical properties and electrode contacts for flexible energy device applications. Self-healing solid polymer electrolytes (SHSPEs) have excellent flexibility and healing ability and can also suppress dendrite formation to increase the safety of LMBs. In this study, a novel SHSPE is designed by a combination of the zwitterionic copolymer, SBMA ([2-(methacryloyloxy) ethyl] dimethyl-(3-sulfopropyl) ammonium hydroxide)-co-BA (Butyl Acrylate), and a lithium salt, LiTFSI. We explored their solvation structures and reactivity on the Li metal anode using Density functional theory (DFT) and ab initio molecular dynamics (AIMD) methods. Besides, we also studied the reactivity of the considered SHSPE on the Cu (100) surface to explore the SEI formation mechanisms. The cationic NR 4 + and anionic SO 3 - groups of SBMA interact electrostatically and form cross-linked network structures within the electrolyte framework, providing the designed SHSPE with prominent self-healing capacity. The decomposition reactions of SHSPE on the Li metal anode are explored, and the resultant decomposition products that contribute to the formation of the solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) are identified. Furthermore, AIMD results indicate that highly concentrated SO 3 - groups in the SHSPE promote Li ion diffusion, which increases Li ionic conductivity. The present findings provide design criteria for developing highly conductive self-healing SPEs.

Abstract:Solid-state lithium-sulfur batteries (SSLSBs) are attractive due to their potential to provide high energy densities. However, the battery chemistry of SSLSBs still faces significant challenges, such as sluggish ion transport and prominent interface failures. Here, a high-performance cell is demonstrated by designing a composite electrolyte (CPE) consisting of polyethylene glycol azobenzamide (PGA) and poly (ethylene oxide) (PEO). Meanwhile, 7 Li solid-state NMR spectroscopy and density functional theory (DFT) results show that PGA promotes the dissociation of lithium salts and generate more free lithium ions, thereby improving the ion migration kinetics. Moreover, ex-situ XPS and DFT confirm that PGA has a significant confined effect on polysulfides and effectively suppresses the shuttle effect. Subsequently, the interfacial layer consisted of abundant LiF&Li 3 N, which could achieve rapid lithium-ion transport and uniform deposition. Therefore, a stable ultra-long cycle time of over 2800 h can be achieved for the Li/Li symmetric cells at 0.2 mA cm −2 . The prepared CPE exhibits a high ionic conductivity of 4.9 × 10 -4 S cm −1 and a lithium-ion transference number of 0.53 at 50 °C. The assembled SSLSBs show an excellent cycling performance, which accomplishes 100 cycles at 0.2C with the reversible discharge capacity of 541 mAh/g. The superior performance of the SSLSBs rationalizes the CPE construction concept and leads to considerations for the innovative design of PEO-based SSLSBs.

Abstract:Polyethylene oxide, as one of the most common polymers, has been extensively studied for solid-state polymer electrolytes. However, its poor mechanical properties and low ionic conductivity severely limit its application. Herein, a series of double dynamic self-healing polyurethane polymer electrolyte (PUSPE-X) with hydrogen bonds and dynamic urea bonds was prepared by a simple polycondensation reaction. The constructed network exhibits excellent mechanical properties, strong self-healing and good shape memory properties. Benefiting from the oxygens in the PEG segment and the nitrogen atom in the imide (–NH–) group simultaneously act as electron donor to form coordination bonds with lithium ions by coulombic interaction, further promoting the anion and cation of the lithium salt to dissociate, the PUSPE-6000 demonstrates good ion conductivity of 0.127 m S cm −1 and satisfactory lithium-ion transference number ( t Li + =0.55) at 60 °C. The Li|PUSPE-6000|Li symmetric cell works stable for 1200 h at 0.1 mA cm −2 and the LFP|PUSPE-6000|Li cell also achieves excellent cycling stability. The flexible battery based on PUSPE-6000 can continue to work under a variety of harsh conditions, which expand the choice for the all solid-state electrolyte in the flexible wearable electronic device.

Abstract:All solid-state lithium-sulfur batteries are regarded as promising high safety and high energy density energy storage devices. However, the dissolution of lithium polysulfide intermediate species and the growth of dendrites on the lithium metal anode during cycling causes capacity fading and hidden security problems. Herein, we design a composite solid polymer electrolyte based on poly(thioether)/ polyethylene oxide (PTE/PEO) with a sizeable electrochemical window, enhanced ionic conductivity, and attractive mechanical properties. In the PTE composite electrolyte, the interactions of PTE with -CF3 and SO2- group of the (NSO2CF3)2- anion enhance dissociation of lithium salts to release more Li+ and improve the ionic conductivity. And trances of short-chain polysulfides could be observed on the cathode, demonstrating the successful conversion of the longer-chain polysulfides leading to minimum parasitic reactions preventing polysulfide dissolution and inhibiting lithium dendrite. Benefiting from the improvements in electrolytes, a high capacity and safety of lithium-sulfur batteries could be achieved.

Abstract:All-solid-state lithium batteries (ASSLBs) have gained enormous interest due to their potential high energy density, high performance, and inherent safety characteristics for advanced energy storage systems. Although solid-state ceramic (inorganic) electrolytes (SSCEs) have high ionic conductivity and high electrochemical stability, they experience some significant drawbacks, such as poor electrolyte/electrode interfacial properties and poor mechanical characteristics (brittle, fragile), which can hinder their adoption for commercialization. Typically, SSCE-based ASSLBs require high cell stack pressures exerted by heavy fixtures for regular operation, which can reduce the energy density of the overall battery packages. Polymer–SSCE composite electrolytes can provide inherently good interfacial contacts with the electrodes that do not require high cell stack pressures. In this study, we explore the feasibility of incorporating an electronically and ionically conducting polymer, polypyrrole (PPy), into a polymer backbone, polyvinylidene fluoride-co-hexafluoropropylene (PVDF-HFP), to improve the ionic conductivity of the resultant polymer–SSCE composite electrolyte (SSPE). The electronically conductive polymer-incorporated composite electrolyte showed superior room temperature ionic conductivity and electrochemical performance compared to the baseline sample (without PPy). The PPy-incorporated polymer electrolyte demonstrated a high resilience to high temperature operation compared with the liquid-electrolyte counterpart. This performance advantage can potentially be employed in ASSLBs that operate at high temperatures. In our recent development efforts, SSPEs with optimal formulations showed room temperature ionic conductivity of 2.5 × 10−4 S/cm. The data also showed, consistently, that incorporating PPy into the polymer backbone helped boost the ionic conductivity with various SSPE formulations, consistent with the current study. Electrochemical performance of ASSLBs with the optimized SSPEs will be presented in a separate publication. The current exploratory study has shown the feasibility and benefits of the novel approach as a promising method for the research and development of next-generation solid composite electrolyte-based ASSLBs.

Synergistic Combination of Ether-Linkage and Polymer-in-Salt for Electrolytes with Facile Li + Conducting and High Stability in Solid-State Lithium Batteries

Abstract:In developing solid polymer electrolytes (SPEs), networked SPE (NSPE) and polymer-in-salt (PiS) configurations are effective strategies to achieve high ionic conductivity. The ether linkage of poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) effectively dissociates salts, among which salt Li[N(SO 2 F) 2 ] (LiFSI) exhibits excellent Li + -conductive characteristics. The present study synthesizes a PiS-NSPE comprising 55 wt% LiFSI and 45 wt% PEO-based NSPE. The PiS configuration creates aggregated Li + n -FSI − m domains for Li + transport through the decoupling ion-conductive mechanism and the NSPE, with high-voltage tolerance, dissociates LiFSI and segregates the Li + n -FSI − m domains into interconnected clusters for Li + percolation. With such a synergistic combination, the PiS-NSPE exhibits an ionic conductivity of 2.3×10 −3 S cm −1 and a Li + -transference number of 0.69 at 30 °C. Protected by LiFSI, the PiS-NSPE is electrochemically stable until 4.6 V (vs. Li/Li + ). The elastic feature enables the PiS-NSPE to withstand the Li-anode volume change and the lithiophilic FSI − -derived interlayer facilitates smooth Li deposition. The high compatibility between the PiS-NSPE and electrode materials results in the excellent performance of commercial-scale cathodes (∼10 mg cm −2 in active mass) in batteries. The synergy between PEO-based NSPEs and high-content LiFSI is promising in realizing the practical application of SPEs in all-solid-state batteries.

Enhanced electrochemical stability and ion transfer rate: A polymer/ceramic composite electrolyte for high-performance all-solid-state lithium-sulfur batteries

Abstract:All-solid-state (ASS) lithium-sulfur (LiS) batteries utilizing composite polymer electrolytes (CPEs) represent a promising avenue in the domain of electric vehicles and large-scale energy storage systems, leveraging the combined benefits of polymer electrolytes (PEs) and ceramic electrolytes (CEs). However, the inherent weak interface compatibility between PEs and CEs often leads to phase separation, thereby impeding the transposition of Li+. In this study, the trimethoxy-[3-(2-methoxyethoxy)propyl]silane (TM-MES) is introduced as a chemical agent to form bonds with polyethylene oxide (PEO) and Li10GeP2S12 (LGPS), resulting in the development of a novel composite polymer electrolyte (CPETM-MES). This innovative approach mitigates phase separation between PEs and CEs while concurrently enhancing the protective capabilities of LGPS against decomposition at the interfaces of both the Li anode and sulfur cathode. Moreover, the CPETM-MES exhibits superior mechanical toughness, an expanded electrochemical window, and elevated ionic conductivity. In the symmetric cell, it demonstrates an extended operational lifespan exceeding 1800 h, and the current density can reach up to 1.05 mA/cm2. Furthermore, the initial discharge capacity of ASS LiS batteries utilizing CPETM-MES attains 1227 mAh/g and maintains a capacity of 904 mAh/g after 100 cycles. Notably, a high-energy-density of 2454 Wh/kg is achieved based on the sulfur cathode.
A flexible Li2SnO3-coupled PEO-based single-ion conducting composite solid-state electrolyte for highly-stable Li metal batteries

Abstract:Development of all-solid-state lithium-ion batteries (ASSLBs) with potentially high energy density and safety is critical for next-generation energy storage devices. In this work, a low-cost flexible Li2SnO3(LSO)-coupled PEO-based composite single-ion conducting polymer solid-state electrolyte (CSIPE) was prepared by a simple solvent-free solid-phase method. The obtained LSO-coupled CSIPE exhibited a high ionic conductivity of 5.59 × 10−4 S cm−1 at 60 °C with a high lithium ion transference number of 0.54 and an electrochemical stability window as high as 5.28 V. In addition, the results based on Vogel-Tammann-Fulcher (VTF) model and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) measurements indicated that the presence of LSO reduced the activation energy for lithium ion migration and the crystallinity of the polymer matrix to provide channels and flexible polymer chains for the transportation of lithium ions. Moreover, the fabricated lithium metal anode based full cell worked stably for more than 100 cycles maintaining a high specific capacity of 127.1 mAh g−1 and a specific capacity retention ratio of 96.5% at a high cycling rate of 0.5 C. While, the CSIPE also demonstrated an excellent rate performance and outstanding adaptation to cathodes. Furthermore, the obtained LSO-coupled CSIPE remained stable even at a temperature as high as 322 °C without thermal runaway, and worked under different current densities for 450 h without short-circuiting, indicating good interfacial stability to ensure the safety of the batteries. It is expected that this LSO-coupled CSIPE is a promising substitute for liquid electrolytes with broad commercial prospects.

Abstract:Solid polymer electrolytes (SPEs) were investigated for several decades due to their good compatibility with electrodes. However, meeting the essential requirements for solid polymer electrolytes, including enhanced ionic conductivity, superior solubility with conductive lithium salts, and robust interface stability when in contact with a Li anode, remains a formidable challenge. In our work, we found that transition metal carbides (NiNbCeC) over mesoporous silica (SBA-15) can be filled into the Polyethylene Oxide (PEO) matrix to form composite solid electrolytes which can greatly improve the ionic conductivity of PEO. We investigate a series of transition metal carbides with varying mass ratios of Cerium (5%, 10%, and 20%) to fabricate All-Solid-State Li-S batteries (ASSLi-S). Our results demonstrate that different mass ratios of Cerium play a pivotal role in enhancing the ionic conductivity of the composite solid electrolytes, reducing impedance levels from 9150 O (20% Ce) to 4000 O (5% Ce) to 1730 O (10% Ce). At room temperature, the high initial specific capacity at 1C and reversible specific capacity after 100 cycles are 525 and 363 mAh/g, 605 and 403 mAh/g, 246.3 mAh/g and 63.28 mAh/g for 5% Ce, 10%, and 20%, respectively. Furthermore, long-term cycling tests of ASSLi-S cells at 0.5C reveal promising performance, with the cell containing 10% Ce solid electrolytes delivering an initial specific capacity of 1165.7 mAh/g and maintaining 335 mAh/g after 200 cycles. This represents a significant breakthrough, demonstrating that PEO-based solid electrolytes can achieve impressive electrochemical results at room temperature. SEM characterization was employed to assess the volume change in the solid electrolyte layer and elemental distribution of solid electrolyte materials through cross-sectional analysis. This analysis revealed that the failure modes of solid-state Li-S cells can also be attributed to the migration of sulfur elements from the cathode to the solid electrolyte layer during the cycling process. XRD was utilized to study the crystallinity of composite solid electrolytes. This study represents a significant stride in the progress of high-performance solid polymer electrolytes for All-Solid-State Li-S batteries, shedding light on the failure modes of such batteries. It underscores the potential of composites based on transition metal carbides in addressing crucial challenges for their practical implementation in Solid-State Lithium-Sulfur Batteries.

Abstract:Polyether is a kind of ideal polymer matrix for solid polymer electrolytes (SPEs), but its inherent drawbacks (such as the semi-crystalline nature and strong complexation of lithium ions) still hinder their commercial application. The construction of comb-like SPEs effectively increases their functionalities and improves the comprehensive performance. Herein, we apply a dynamic boronic ester exchange strategy to simultaneously enhance the lithium-ion conduction and self-healing ability of the SPEs, thus effectively solving the current problems of polyether. The copolymer (GPA) containing side chains with poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) and diol groups was obtained through reversible addition–fragmentation chain-transfer (RAFT) polymerization and hydrolysis, and PBA-M2070 containing the boronic acid group and flexible polyether segments was obtained via Schiff base reaction. Boronic ester bonds were formed by dehydration of the diol groups of GPA and the boronic acid groups of PBA-M2070. Dynamic exchange of the boronic ester bonds at the branched sites enhanced the side-chain motion, thus increasing the self-healing ability and electrochemical performance of the SPEs, as well as the cycling stability of assembled batteries. Benefiting from the dynamic boronic ester exchange and enhanced side-chain mobility, the SPEs exhibited self-healing within 10 min and an ionic conductivity of 1.58 × 10–5 S cm–1 at 30 °C. The assembled lithium metal batteries (LMBs) were operated stably at 0.5C for 300 cycles. The dynamic boronic ester exchange strategy used to enhance the LMBs properties provides new insight into the design of comb-like polymer electrolytes.

Abstract:Polyethylene oxide (PEO)-based solid-state electrolyte (SSE) is attractive due to its excellent adhesion with electrodes and good processability. However, lithium dendrites easily penetrate PEO because of its soft nature, which results in inferior battery performance and safety issues. Here, a novel self-healing PEO-based SSE is prepared by incorporating 2 wt% amorphous three-dimensional carbon (3DC). This SSE possesses suitably low electronic conductivity for battery applications (on the order of 10 −9 S cm −1 ), which is five orders of magnitude lower than its ionic conductivity (10 −4 S cm −1 ) at 60 °C. In addition, the improved fluidity and strong adhesion between the 3DC and the PEO matrix contribute to the self-healing ability of SSE, which will repair the cracks of SSE formed during battery cycling. Moreover, this SSE shows enhanced ionic and thermal conductivities and mechanical strength, suppressing the formation and growth of lithium dendrites. As a result, this SSE exhibits excellent electrochemical stability, achieving 5000 h of stable cycles in lithium symmetric cell (0.1 mA cm −2 , 0.1 mAh cm −2 ) and 850 long-term stable cycles for the LFP//Li full cell at 1 C (0.31 mA cm −2 ).

Abstract:Poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) based solid polymer electrolytes (SPEs) have been regarded as promising electrolytes for next-generation all-solid-state lithium batteries (ASSLBs). However, they have achieved limited cycling stability due to their inability to suppress Li dendrite growth. Herein, a self-healing electrostatic shield (SHES) is proposed to force uniform lithium deposition by introducing 0.05M Cs+. At this situation, the Cs+ shows a lower reduction potential compared to the Li+ reduction potential (1.7 M). During lithium deposition, the Cs+ forms a positively charged electrostatic shield around the initial Li tips, which forces further deposition of lithium to adjacent regions of the anode and results in a dendrite-free Li deposition. With this in mind, the Li-Li symmetric cells can operate for 1000 and 500 h at current densities of 0.1 and 0.2 mA cm(-2), respectively, which are 10 times longer than Cs+ -free PEO electrolyte. Moreover, the Li/PEO-Cs+/LiFePO4 (LFP) cell achieves high capacity retention of 90% within 100 cycles at 0.5C and retains a high capacity of 113 mAh g(-1) at 0.8C, while shortcircuits are observed for the Li/PEO/LFP cell, even at 0.2C. This strategy will generate substantial interest and shed light on the development of other dendrite-free SPEs and ASSLBs systems.
Organic Cationic-Coordinated Perfluoropolymer Electrolytes with Strong Li+-Solvent Interaction for Solid State Li-Metal Batteries

Abstract:The practical application of solid-state polymer lithium-metal batteries (LMBs) is plagued by the inferior ionic conductivity of the applied polymer electrolytes (PEs), which is caused by the coupling of ion transport with the motion of polymer segments. Here, solvated molecules based on ionic liquid and lithium salt with strong Li+-solvent interaction are inserted into an elaborately engineered perfluoropolymer electrolyte via ionic dipole interaction, extensively facilitating Li+ transport and improving mechanical properties. The intensified formation of solvation structures of contact ion pairs and ionic aggregates, as well as the strong electron-withdrawal properties of the F atoms in perfluoropolymers, give the PE high electrochemical stability and excellent interfacial stability. As a result, Li||Li symmetric cells demonstrate a lifetime of 2500 h and an exceptionally high critical current density above 2.3 mA cm-2, Li||LiFePO4 batteries exhibit consistent cycling for 550 cycles at 10 C, and Li||uncoated LiNi0.8Co0.1Mn0.1O2 cells achieve 1000 cycles at 0.5 C with an average Coulombic efficiency of 98.45%, one of the best results reported to date based on PEs. Our discovery sheds fresh light on the targeted synergistic regulation of the electro-chemo-mechanical properties of PEs to extend the cycle life of LMBs.

Abstract:The present surge in demand for energy storage systems that offer both high energy density and enhanced safety has spurred a transition toward solid-state electrolytes (SEs). Among these, solid polymer electrolytes (SPEs) have garnered considerable attention owing to their inherent advantages such as thinness, low density, and facile manufacturability. However, the issue of uncontrollable dendrite formation upon interaction with Li metal remains a persistent challenge due to localized and concentrated nucleation of Li+. Here, we present a novel electrolyte system based on PEO-LiTFSI-xSbF(3) (PLSx, x = 0.5, 1, 1.5 wt %). The PLSx electrolyte exhibits a remarkable ability to consume dendrites through a spontaneous reaction with Li, leading to the formation of a stable LiF/Li3Sb interfacial phase. This interfacial phase, characterized by high ion conductivity, low electron conductivity, and a lithiophilic mesophase, effectively mitigates interfacial side reactions, promotes the uniform deposition of Li+, and significantly enhances the inhibition of dendrite growth. Consequently, Li-Li symmetric cells employing the PLS1 demonstrate exceptional cyclability, surpassing 1000 h. All-solid-state Li-metal batteries (ASSLMBs) enable 300 cycles at a 0.5C rate without any notable capacity degradation. This work opens a promising avenue for designing ASSLMBs using cleverly engineered interface layers.
