Abstract:Abstract Coupling high-capacity cathode and Li-anode with solid-state electrolyte has been demonstrated as an effective strategy for increasing the energy densities and safety of rechargeable batteries. However, the limited ion conductivity, the large interfacial resistance, and unconstrained Li-dendrite growth hinder the application of solid-state Li-metal batteries. Here, a poly(ether-urethane)-based solid-state polymer electrolyte with self-healing capability is designed to reduce the interfacial resistance and provides a high-performance solid-state Li-metal battery. With its dynamic covalent disulfide bonds and hydrogen bonds, the proposed solid-state polymer electrolyte exhibits excellent interfacial self-healing ability and maintains good interfacial contact. Full cells are assembled with the two integrated electrodes/electrolytes. As a result, the Li||Li symmetric cells exhibit stable long-term cycling for more than 6000 h, and the solid-state Li-S battery shows a prolonged cycling life of 700 cycles at 0.3 C. The use of ultrasound imaging technology shows that the interfacial contact of the integrated structure is much better than those of traditional laminated structure. This work provides an interesting interfacial dual-integrated strategy for designing high-performance solid-state Li-metal batteries.

Highly Ionic Conductive, Self-Healing, Li10GeP2S12-Filled Composite Solid Electrolytes Based on Reversibly Interlocked Macromolecule Networks for Lithium Metal Batteries with Improved Cycling Stability

Abstract:Ceramic-polymer composite solid electrolytes (CSEs) have attracted great attention by combining the advantages of polymer electrolytes and inorganic ceramic electrolytes. Herein, Li10GeP2S12 (LGPS) particles are incorporated into poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO)-based reversibly interlocked polymer networks (RILNs) derived from the topological rearrangement of two PEO networks cross-linked by reversible imine bonds and disulfide linkages. A series of highly ionic conductive, self-healing CSEs are obtained accordingly. The interlocking architecture successfully inhibits PEO crystallization, increasing the amorphous phase for Li ion transportation, and stabilizes the conductive pathways of LGPS particles by its unique confinement effect. Meanwhile, the LGPS particles cooperate with the RILN matrix, forming a filler-polymer interfacial phase for additional Li ion transportation and strengthening and toughening the resultant CSEs via the strong intermolecular Li+-O2- interactions. Furthermore, the dynamic characteristics of the included reversible bonds ensure a multiple intrinsic self-healing capability. Consequently, the CSEs containing 15 wt % LGPS deliver a high ionic conductivity (1.06 × 10-3 S cm-1) and high Li ion transference number (∼0.6) at 25 °C, a wide electrochemical stability window (>4.9 V), good mechanical properties (0.63 MPa, 377%), and a stable CSE/Li anode interface. The integrated Li/CSE/LiFePO4 battery exhibits a specific discharge capacity of 110.8 mAh g-1 at 1 C (25 °C) and a capacity retention of 76.9% after 200 cycles. Thanks to the healability, the damaged CSEs can regain the structural integrity, ion conductive capability, and cycling performance of the assembled cells. The present work provides an effective strategy to fabricate CSEs for lithium metal batteries that are workable at ambient temperature.
In situ formed self-healable quasi-solid hybrid electrolyte network coupled with eutectic mixture towards ultra-long cycle life lithium metal batteries

Abstract:The exploration of high-performance polymer-based electrolyte have great promise for the development of next-generation lithium metal batteries. In this study, a self-healable quasi-solid hybrid electrolyte network coupled with deep eutectic solvent (X-PPS-D4) was prepared by polyaddition reaction, photo-initiated free-radical crosslinking, and physical blending. X-PPS-D4 not only possessed high ionic conductivity (σ) of 2.03✗10−4 S cm−1 at 30 °C but also wide electrochemical stability window (0∼5.0 V vs. Li+|Li). The enhanced lithium ion transference number (tLi+= 0.44) for X-PPS-D4 resulted from reduction of anion mobility that was proved by spectral analysis together with nuclear magnetic resonance study and theoretical calculation. Under testing temperature of 30 °C, X-PPS-D4 could support stable long-term (>1300 h) plating/stripping tests of lithium symmetrical cell at current density of 0.1 mA cm−2. More importantly, the in situ formed X-PPS-D4 on LiFePO4 cathode within the coin cell facilitated excellent cell performance with specific capacity over 100 mA h g−1 at 5 C and ultra-long cycle life (>1000 cycles) with high delivered specific capacity at 1 C (>116.1 mA h g−1 after 1000 cycle). X-PPS-D4 also supported coin cells with high voltage cathode to perform decently. This research provides new insights into structure-property relationship of quasi-solid hybrid electrolyte with eutectic mixture and offered an effective way to develop high-performance polymer-based electrolytes for LMBs.

Abstract:Lithium metal batteries (LMBs) have generally become potential candidates for energy storage devices because of their high energy density. However, the practical applications of LMBs have been limited due to the low safety of liquid electrolytes. Compared to liquid electrolytes, solid-state polymer electrolytes (SPEs) have excellent mechanical strength. However, there is room for improvement because traditional PEO-based SPEs need more mechanical properties and electrode contacts for flexible energy device applications. Self-healing solid polymer electrolytes (SHSPEs) have excellent flexibility and healing ability and can also suppress dendrite formation to increase the safety of LMBs. In this study, a novel SHSPE is designed by a combination of the zwitterionic copolymer, SBMA ([2-(methacryloyloxy) ethyl] dimethyl-(3-sulfopropyl) ammonium hydroxide)-co-BA (Butyl Acrylate), and a lithium salt, LiTFSI. We explored their solvation structures and reactivity on the Li metal anode using Density functional theory (DFT) and ab initio molecular dynamics (AIMD) methods. Besides, we also studied the reactivity of the considered SHSPE on the Cu (100) surface to explore the SEI formation mechanisms. The cationic NR 4 + and anionic SO 3 - groups of SBMA interact electrostatically and form cross-linked network structures within the electrolyte framework, providing the designed SHSPE with prominent self-healing capacity. The decomposition reactions of SHSPE on the Li metal anode are explored, and the resultant decomposition products that contribute to the formation of the solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) are identified. Furthermore, AIMD results indicate that highly concentrated SO 3 - groups in the SHSPE promote Li ion diffusion, which increases Li ionic conductivity. The present findings provide design criteria for developing highly conductive self-healing SPEs.

Abstract:Polyethylene oxide (PEO)-based solid-state electrolyte (SSE) is attractive due to its excellent adhesion with electrodes and good processability. However, lithium dendrites easily penetrate PEO because of its soft nature, which results in inferior battery performance and safety issues. Here, a novel self-healing PEO-based SSE is prepared by incorporating 2 wt% amorphous three-dimensional carbon (3DC). This SSE possesses suitably low electronic conductivity for battery applications (on the order of 10 −9 S cm −1 ), which is five orders of magnitude lower than its ionic conductivity (10 −4 S cm −1 ) at 60 °C. In addition, the improved fluidity and strong adhesion between the 3DC and the PEO matrix contribute to the self-healing ability of SSE, which will repair the cracks of SSE formed during battery cycling. Moreover, this SSE shows enhanced ionic and thermal conductivities and mechanical strength, suppressing the formation and growth of lithium dendrites. As a result, this SSE exhibits excellent electrochemical stability, achieving 5000 h of stable cycles in lithium symmetric cell (0.1 mA cm −2 , 0.1 mAh cm −2 ) and 850 long-term stable cycles for the LFP//Li full cell at 1 C (0.31 mA cm −2 ).

Self-adaptive multiblock-copolymer-based hybrid solid-state electrolyte for safe and stable lithium-metal battery

Abstract:The dramatic volume change during the Li plating/stripping process has aroused brittle solid electrolyte interphase as well as weak interfacial compatibility between electrolyte and electrode, which results in capacity fading and safety hazards. We design elastic multiblock copolymers (mBCPs) with excellent extensibility up to 600% to address this problem. The best recovery rate of mBCP is 82% after 100 times of cyclic tensile tests. The mBCPs are regarded as elastomers that enable close contact with electrode surface during cycling. The elastic mBCPs are then mixed with lithium salt and high ionic conductivity inorganic ceramics to prepare hybrid solid-state electrolytes (HSSEs). The HSSEs are expected to possess self-adaptive property making good interfacial connection due to the mBCPs. The best HSSEs demonstrate high ionic conductivity of 0.14 mS cm−1 with a Li ion transference number of 0.55 and wide electrochemical window of 5.2 V at 25°C. Excellent cycling performance with long battery life is achieved by utilizing the self-adaptive HSSE: the Li metal electrode cycled for 150 times retains 96% coulombic efficiency in Li/HSSE/LiFePO4 cells, and stable cycling of 500 h is achieved in the symmetric cells.

Hybrid Dynamic Covalent Network as a Protective Layer and Solid-State Electrolyte for Stable Lithium-Metal Batteries

Abstract:Lithium (Li) metal is a highly promising anode material for next-generation high-energy-density batteries, while Li dendrite growth and the unstable solid electrolyte interphase layer inhibit its commercialization. Herein, a chemically grafted hybrid dynamic network (CHDN) is rationally designed and synthesized by the 4,4'-thiobisbenzenamine cross-linked poly(poly(ethylene glycol) methyl ether methacrylate-r-glycidyl methacrylate) and (3-glycidyloxypropyl) trimethoxysilane-functionalized SiO2 nanoparticles, which is utilized as a protective layer and hybrid solid-state electrolyte (HSE) for stable Li-metal batteries. The presence of a dynamic exchangeable disulfide affords self-heability and recyclability, and the chemical attachment between SiO2 nanoparticles and the polymer matrix enables the homogeneous distribution of inorganic fillers and mechanical robustness. With integrated flexibility, fast segmental dynamics, and autonomous adaptability, the as-prepared CHDN-based protective layer enables superior electrochemical performance in half cells and full cells (capacity retention of 83.7% over 400 cycles for the CHDN@Li/LiFePO4 cell at 1 C). Furthermore, benefiting from intimate electrode/electrolyte interfacial contact, CHDN-based solid-state cells deliver excellent electrochemical performance (capacity retention of 89.5% over 500 cycles for the Li/HSE/LiFePO4 cell at 0.5 C). In addition, the Li/HSE/LiFePO4 pouch cell exhibits superior safety, even exposing various physical damage conditions. This work thereby provides a fresh insight into a rational design principle for dynamic network-based protective layers and solid-state electrolytes for battery applications.

Abstract:All–solid–state lithium metal batteries (ASSLMBs) are considered the holy grail of next–generation high–energy–density energy storage systems. However, the growth of lithium (Li) dendrites and poor solid–solid interfacial contact limit their development. The design of a solid electrolyte structure is an effective strategy for solving this problem. In this study, a composite solid electrolyte (CSE) was reported that was reinforced by a three–dimensional (3D) fiber network of PAN/LLZTO, uniformly dispersed in the PEO polymer (PPL) matrix to form a continuous path. This continuous framework not only facilitated the rapid migration and uniform deposition of Li ion, but also improved the mechanical strength of the polymer matrix and effectively inhibited dendrite growth. PPL electrolyte had a high ionic conductivity of 1.76×10–4 S cm–1 (30°C), wide electrochemical stability window of 5.2 V, and high Li ion transfer number of 0.53. These CSEs ran stably for more than 4000 h in Li symmetrical batteries. A reversible capacity of 120.7 mA h g–1 was obtained after 1000 cycles at a current density of 1.0 C in LiFePO4/PPL/Li batteries. In addition, PPL electrolyte exhibited stable cycling performance with a high–voltage cathode. The reversible capacity of the LiNi0.5Mn0.3Co0.2O2 (LiCoO2)/PPL/Li battery was 138.8 mA h g–1 (130.3 mA h g–1) after 100 cycles (0.2 C). And the, LiFePO4/PPL/Li battery cycled stably at room temperature, with the capacity stabilized at 52.0 mA h g–1 after 1700 cycles (1.0 C), which further broadened the potential application of CSEs. This study showed that this 3D fiber network reinforced polymer electrolyte possessed broad application prospects in next–generation ASSLMB systems.

Abstract:Solid inorganics, known for kinetically inhibiting polymer crystallization and enhancing ionic conductivity, have attracted significant attention in solid polymer electrolytes. However, current composite polymer electrolytes (CPEs) are still facing challenges in Li metal batteries, falling short of inhibiting severe dendritic growth and resulting in very limited cycling life. This study introduces Ga62.5In21.5Sn16 (Galinstan) liquid metal (LM) as an active liquid alternative to conventional passive solid fillers, aiming at realizing self-healing protection against dendrite problems. Compared to solid inorganics, for example silica, LM droplets could more significantly reduce polymer crystallinity and enhance Li-ion conductivity due to their liquid nature, especially at temperatures below the polymer melting point. More importantly, LMs are unraveled as dynamic chemical traps, which are capable of blocking and consuming lithium dendrites upon contact via in situ alloying during battery operation and further inhibiting dendritic growth due to the lower deposition energy barrier of the formed Li-LM alloy. As a proof of concept, by strategically designing an asymmetric CPE with the active LM filling, a solid-state Li/LiFePO4 battery achieves promising full-cell functionality with notable rate performance and stable cycle life. This active filler-mediated self-healing approach could bring new insights into the battery design in versatile solid-state systems.
Ameliorating the interfacial issues of all-solid-state lithium metal batteries by constructing polymer/inorganic composite electrolyte

Abstract:Lithium metal is one of the most promising anodes for next-generation batteries due to its high capacity and low reduction potential. However, the notorious Li dendrites can cause the short life span and safety issues, hindering the extensive application of lithium batteries. Herein, Li7La3Zr2O12 (LLZO) ceramics are integrated into polyethylene oxide (PEO) to construct a facile polymer/inorganic composite solid-state electrolyte (CSSE) to inhibit the growth of Li dendrites and widen the electrochemical stability window. Given the feasibility of our strategy, the designed PEO-LLZO-LiTFSI composite solid-state electrolyte (PLL-CSSE) exhibits an outstanding cycling property of 134.2 mAh g−1 after 500 cycles and the Coulombic efficiency of 99.1% after 1000 cycles at 1 C in LiFePO4-Li cell. When cooperated with LiNi0.6Co0.2Mn0.2O2 (NCM622) cathode, the PLL-CSSE renders a capacity retention of 82.4% after 200 cycles at 0.2 C. More importantly, the uniform dispersion of LLZO in PEO matrix is tentative tested via Raman and FT-IR spectra and should be responsible for the improved electrochemical performance. The same conclusion can be drawn from the interface investigation after cycling. This work presents an intriguing solid-state electrolyte with high electrochemical performance, which will boost the development of all-solid-state lithium batteries with high energy density.

Abstract:Compared with liquid electrolytes, the solid polymer electrolyte (SPE), which possesses improved thermal and mechanical stability, is believed the broadest potential application for satisfying the safety needs of advanced electrochemical devices. However, some breakable SPEs could lead to catastrophic failure of batteries that triggered by a short circuit. In the present contribution, a new class of SPE containing disulfide bonds and urea groups is reported. The hydrogen bonding between the urea groups and disulfide metathesis reaction endows the SPE with a high level of self-healing without external stimuli at room temperature as well as ultrafast self-healing at elevated temperatures. The completely healed SPE with extreme damage shows a high self-healing efficiency and no changes in the ionic conductivity and cycling performance of the solid-state lithium-metal/LiFePO4 cell compared to the pristine one.

Abstract:In this study we used a solution-casting method to fabricate a hybrid solid electrolyte (HSE) membrane based on a poly(vinylidene fluoride–co–hexafluoropropylene)/polyacrylonitrile (PVDF-HFP/PAN) polymer blend loaded with an interconnected ligament–shaped Li6.25Al0.25La3Zr2O12 (Al-doped LLZO) filler and applied it in all-solid-state lithium-metal batteries (ASSLMBs). The as-prepared HSE containing the optimized quantity of Al-doped LLZO@PVDF-HFP/PAN/LiClO4/succinonitrile filler displayed high ionic conductivity (1.12 × 10–4 S m–1 at 25 °C), a wide electrochemical stability window [up to 4.2 V (Li/Li+)], and a high transference number (0.42). A full cell based on the composite cathode NCM811 (LNi0.8Co0.1Mn0.1O2, c-NCM811)/HSE/Li had a highest discharge specific capacity of 160.92 mA h g–1 at 0.1 C and a capacity retention of 92.52% after 100 cycles; at 0.2 C, these values were 144.70 mA h g–1 and 85.72% (after 100 cycles), respectively. The Li+ diffusion coefficient of the c-NCM811/HSE/Li cell was one order of magnitude higher than that of the corresponding cell having a bare cathode (b-NCM811/HSE/Li) as well as c-NCM811/SPE+10%SN/Li. We used a multiple-mode calorimetry device to investigate the in situ heat flow profiles of c-NCM811/HSE/Li, c-NCM811/SPE/Li, and b-NCM811/HSE/Li cells; the c-NCM811/HSE/Li cell exhibited the lowest heat profile. Thus, ASSLMBs featuring the NCM811 composite cathode and this as-prepared HSE have great potential for use in applications requiring batteries of high energy density.

Abstract:Conventional lithium-ion batteries with liquid organic electrolytes generally suffer potential security risks concerning volatilization, flammability and explosion. Nonflammable and thin solid-state electrolytes particularly composite solid electrolytes (CSEs) that integrate the merits of different electrolyte systems have attracted increasing attention for advanced lithium batteries with improved energy density and high safety. In this work, a three-dimensional (3D) fiber-network-reinforced CSE, which consists of a mechanically robust, porous polyimide (PI) film as a host, Li6.75La3Zr1.75Ta0.25O12 (LLZTO) nanoparticles and poly (vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) polymer matrix with bis-trifluoromethanesulfonimide lithium salt as electrolyte filler, is designed and fabricated. Such unique 3D CSE films with PI fiber network holding for uniform dispersion of LLZTO in PVDF show continuous lithium ion transfer pathways and effective prevention for lithium dendrite growth, consequently exhibiting improved mechanical property (high tensile strength of 11.5 MPa) and high cyclic stability (more than 1000 h of cycling for Li symmetric batteries). Furthermore, solid-state LiNi0.5Co0.2Mn0.3O2/Li pouch cells with the PI-PVDF/LLZTO CSE exhibit excellent cyclic stability (152.6 mA h g-1 with capacity retention of 94.9% at 0.1 C after 80 cycles) at room temperature, and high functionality and safety (withstand harsh environments such as folding, cutting and nail penetration) in practical applications.

Abstract:Solid‐state lithium‐metal batteries constructed by in‐situ solidification of cyclic ether, are considered to be a critical strategy for the next generation of solid‐state batteries with high energy density and safety. However, the poor thermal/electrochemical stability of linear polyethers and severe interfacial reactions limit its further development. Herein, in‐situ ring‐opening hybrid crosslinked polymerization is proposed for organic/inorganic hybrid polymer electrolyte (HCPE) with superior ionic conductivity of 2.22×10−3 S cm−1 at 30°C, ultrahigh Li+ transference number of 0.88, and wide electrochemical stability window of 5.2 V. These allow highly stable lithium stripping/plating cycling for over 1000 h at 1 mA cm−2, which also reveal a well‐defined interfacial stabilization mechanism. Thus HCPE endows assembled solid‐state lithium‐metal batteries with excellent long‐cycle performance over 600 cycles at 2 C (25°C) and superior capacity retention of 92.1%. More importantly, our proposed non‐combustible HCPE opens up a new frontier to promote the practical application of high safety and high energy density solid‐state batteries via in‐situ solidification. Abstract:Composite solid electrolytes (CSEs) combining the advantages of both inorganic and organic solid-state electrolytes, are expected to become the most promising solid electrolyte owning to their favorable interfaces with electrodes. However, low room-temperature ionic conductivity restricts the application of CSEs in lithium metal batteries. Herein, we design an intercalated CSE based on poly(vinylidene fluoride-co-hexafluoropropylene) (PVDF-HFP). Kaolin (2SiO 2 -Al 2 O 3 -2H 2 O), employed as an oxidative flame retardant, imparts nonflammability to the material. The polar molecule dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) is inserted between the kaolin layers as the pre-intercalation treatment, serving as an organic additive within the PVDF-HFP based SPE. The intercalated structure of CSE provides rapid Li + transport channels, resulting in a high ionic conductivity (8.58 × 10 −4 S cm −1 ) and large Li + transference number at room temperature. The Li||Li symmetrical cell with prepared CSE exhibits outstanding cyclic stability of over 1400 h at a current density of 0.2 mA cm −2 for the capacity of 0.2 mAh cm −2 . Moreover, the assembled Li||LiFePO 4 cell delivers a high initial capacity of 140.5 mAh g −1 with a capacity retention of 81.2% after 800 cycles at 0.5 C. In this paper, we present a novel approach for constructing high-performance solid-state lithium metal batteries.

Abstract:The application of solid-state electrolyte in lithium metal batteries is a promising technology to meet the demands for next-generation high-energy-density storage systems. Poly (ethylene oxide) (PEO)-based solid polymer electrolytes have been widely studied, but their electrochemical window is too narrow to be compatible with high-voltage cathodes and their mechanical properties are poor as well. Combination of organic and inorganic compounds is an effective approach to solve this limitation. In this study, Li6.4La3Zr1.4Ta0.6O12 (LLZTO) was surface-modified with a silane coupling agent and compounded with polyacrylonitrile (PAN) to form a 3D nanofiber framework via electrospinning technology, and the PEO-Succinonitrile (SN)-LiTFSI solution was uniformly dispersed in the 3D nanofiber framework to form a continuous Li+ transport path. The prepared composite solid electrolytes (CSEs) showed high ionic conductivity (1.58 × 10−4 S cm−1 at room temperature), a broad electrochemical window (5.1 V, vs. Li/Li+), and an attractive mechanical strength of 49.4 MPa. In addition, solid-state Li/CSE/NCM811 batteries exhibited high coulombic efficiency and significant stable cycling performance.

Abstract:Due to the safety problems caused by the use of flammable organic electrolytes in lithium batteries, it is urgent to develop new solid electrolytes with higher safety. Deep eutectic solvent (DES), as a very promising flame-retardant electrolyte system, has limited its application due to its liquid properties and poor compatibility with lithium metal. Herein, we report a DES-based self-healing polymer (DSHP) electrolyte for quasi-solid-state lithium metal batteries. The electrolyte was prepared by in-situ polymerization of bis (3-amino-propyl)-terminated polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS-NH 2 ) and toluene 2,4-diisocyanate (TDI) monomers in a DES-based electrolyte with fluoroethylene carbonate (FEC) as an additive. The polymer network effectively improves the compatibility of DES with lithium metal and maintains a high ionic conductivity (0.60 mS cm −1 at 30 °C). At the same time, the well-designed siloxane-based DSHP electrolyte not only exhibits self-healing property, but also demonstrates non-flammability advantage with a wide electrochemical voltage window (4.5 V vs Li/Li + ) and a high Li + migration number (0.69). Therefore, the symmetric Li | DSHP | Li cell exhibits long-term cycle stability (>1400 h). The quasi-solid-state lithium battery with DSHP electrolyte coupled with lithium anode and LiFePO 4 cathode demonstrates a high specific capacity of 151.6 mA h g −1 . More importantly, the DSHP-based pouch cell exhibits excellent flexibility during the deformation process. This work provides a valuable method to design safe and high energy quasi-solid-state lithium batteries.

Abstract:A dynamic boronic ester‐based self‐healing polymer electrolyte with excellent mechanical properties and interfacial stability for lithium metal batteries is fabricated via a thermally initiated ring‐opening reaction. The multifunctional electrolyte can not only alter the topologies via boronic ester transesterification and exhibit good self‐healing capability, but also enable homogeneous deposition of lithium ions through the Lewis acid–base interactions. Damage to solid polymer electrolytes can lead to mechanical degradation, short circuits, or functional failures. Therefore, introducing a self‐healing function to solid polymer electrolytes is an ideal strategy to improve the safety and reliability of electrolyte systems. Herein, dynamic boronic ester‐based self‐healing polymer electrolytes (DB‐SHPEs) with excellent mechanical properties and interfacial stability are developed via a thermally initiated ring‐opening reaction between thiol and epoxy groups. The DB‐SHPEs containing boronic ester bonds can not only alter the topologies via boronic ester transesterification and exhibit good self‐healing capability but also enable homogeneous deposition of Li ions on the Li metal through the Lewis acid–base interactions between boron atoms and salt anions. Furthermore, the boronic ester bonds can endow the DB‐SHPE with reprocessability and recyclability taking advantage of associative transesterification reaction. More significantly, the Li/DB‐SHPE/Li symmetric cells exhibit a stable voltage plateau after cycling for 1200 h and the LiFePO4/DB‐SHPE/Li batteries present excellent cycling performance, suggesting that high‐performance self‐healing polymer electrolytes with multiple functions are promising materials for the next‐generation lithium metal batteries.

Abstract:Composite solid electrolytes (CSEs), which are composed of inorganic fillers and organic polymers, show improved safety and suppressed lithium dendrite growth in Li-metal batteries, as compared to flammable liquid electrolytes. However, the performance of current CSEs is limited by the agglomeration effect, with low content of inorganic Li+-conducting fillers and ineffective Li+ transport between the inorganic fillers and the polymer matrix. To address these challenges, a new type of CSE composed of silane-modified Li6.28La3Al0.24Zr2O12 (s@LLAZO) nanofibers and poly(ethylene glycol) diacrylate (PEGDA) is developed. Employment of the silane coupling agent, 3-(trimethoxysilyl)propyl methacrylate, enables the incorporation of a high content of LLAZO nanofibers (up to 70 wt%) with the polymer matrix and results in a well-percolated, three-dimensional LLAZO network fully embedded in the PEGDA matrix. Consequently, the silane coupling agent successfully eliminates the agglomeration effect, which ensures higher ionic conductivity, larger lithium transference number, wider electrochemical stability window, and better cycling stability for s@LLZAO-PEGDA CSEs. Excellent cycling stability and extraordinarily high rate capability (up to 10C) are demonstrated in the all-solid-state Li-metal batteries with LiFePO4 and high-voltage Li[Ni1/3Mn1/3Co1/3]O-2 cathodes at ambient temperature. This novel design of CSEs with s@LLAZO nanofibers paves the way for a new generation of improved functioning all-solid-state Li-metal batteries.
