Abstract:Wastewater treatment plants play a crucial role in water security and sanitation, ensuring ecosystems balance and avoiding significant negative effects on humans and environment. However, they determine also negative pressures, including greenhouse gas and odourous emissions, which should be minimized to mitigate climate changes besides avoiding complaints. The research has been focused on the validation of an innovative integrated biological system for the sustainable treatment of complex gaseous emissions from wastewater treatment plants. The proposed system consists of a moving bed biofilm reactor coupled with an algal photobioreactor, with the dual objective of: i) reducing the inlet concentration of the odourous contaminants (in this case, hydrogen sulphide, toluene and p-xylene); ii) capturing and converting the carbon dioxide emissions produced by the degradation process into exploitable algal biomass. The first reactor promoted the degradation of chemical compounds up to 99.57% for an inlet load (IL) of 22.97 g m −3 d −1 while the second allowed the capture of the CO2 resulting from the degradation of gaseous compounds, with biofixation rate up to 81.55%. The absorbed CO2 was converted in valuable feedstocks, with a maximum algal biomass productivity in aPBR of 0.22 g L −1 d −1 . Dairy wastewater has been used as alternative nutrient source for both reactors, with a view of reusing wastewater while cultivating biomass, framing the proposed technology in a context of a biorefinery within a circular economy perspective. The biomass produced in the algal photobioreactor was indeed characterized by a high lipid content, with a maximum percentage of lipids per dry weight biomass of 35%. The biomass can therefore be exploited for the production of alternative and clean energy carrier. The proposed biotechnology represents an effective tool for shifiting the conventional plants in carbon neutral platform for implementing principles of ecological transition while achieving high levels of environmental protection.

Abstract:The goal of climate neutrality, under the provision of the European Green Deal, will require great efforts to wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) to reduce and optimize their energy consumption. The utilization of membrane aerated biological reactors (MABRs) to renovate existing WWTPs could be an opportunity in this sense. In this study, the control of the flow at the outlet of a pure, open-end MABR was used as a strategy to minimize the oxygen consumption and obtain high oxygen transfer efficiencies (OTEs). OTE values of more than 80% were observed, which are not so common in the literature and are comparable to those obtained with a close-end configuration. High efficiencies (85%) were found for the removal of both COD and total nitrogen from samples of real wastewater. A techno-economic analysis, comparing a conventional activate sludge (CAS) plant with a MABR, both with a treatment capacity of 25,000 equivalent inhabitants (e.i.), found that the MABR only needed approx. 1/5 of the energy required by the CAS. A MABR plant could become a profitable investment, under a fixed return time of 5 years, compared to a CAS with a CAPEX of 123.7 k€, if the overall cost of the cassettes was inferior to 237 k€. A sensitivity analysis imposing a variation of ±50% on the input parameters (cost of blower, diffusers, electric energy, and opportunity cost of capital) demonstrated that the cost of electric energy had the highest impact on the maximum allowable value of the MABR investment, which was affected by ± 26% with respect to the value calculated in the reference scenario.

Abstract:The microalgal-bacterial granular sludge (MBGS) process, enhanced with sodium bicarbonate (NaHCO3), offers a sustainable alternative for wastewater treatment aiming for carbon neutrality. This study demonstrates that NaHCO3, which can be derived from the flue gases and alkaline textile wastewater, significantly enhances pollutant removal and biomass production. Optimal addition of NaHCO3 was found to achieve an inorganic-to-organic carbon ratio of 1.0 and a total carbon-to-nitrogen ratio of 5.0. Metagenomic analysis and structural equation modeling showed that NaHCO3 addition increased dissolved oxygen concentrations and pH levels, creating a more favorable environment for key microbial communities, including Proteobacteria, Chloroflexi, and Cyanobacteria. Confocal laser scanning microscopy further confirmed enhanced interactions between Cyanobacteria and Proteobacteria/Chloroflexi, facilitating the MBGS process. These microbes harbored functional genes (gap2, GLU, and ppk) critical for removing organics, nitrogen, and phosphorus. Carbon footprint analysis revealed significant reductions in CO2 emissions by the NaHCO3-added MBGS process in representative countries (China, Australia, Canada, Germany, and Morocco), compared to the conventional activated sludge process. These findings highlight the effectiveness of NaHCO3 in optimizing MBGS process, establishing it as a key strategy in achieving carbon-neutral wastewater treatment globally.
Synergic treatment of domestic wastewater and food waste in an anaerobic membrane bioreactor demo plant: Process performance, energy consumption, and greenhouse gas emissions

Abstract:Ambient operation and large-scale demonstration have limited the implementation and evaluation of anaerobic membrane bioreactors (AnMBRs) for low-strength wastewater treatment. Here, we studied these issues at an AnMBR demo plant that treats domestic wastewater and food waste together at ambient temperatures (7-28 °C). At varied hydraulic retention times (HRTs, 8-42 h), the AnMBR achieved a COD removal efficiency and biogas production of 80.4% ± 3.9% and 66.5 ± 9.4 NL/m3-Influent, respectively. Moreover, a stable high membrane flux of 14.4 L/m2/h was reached. The electric energy consumption for the AnMBR operation was 0.269-0.433 kW·h/m3, and 49.4%-91.3% could be compensated by the electric energy produced from methane production. At an HRT of 10 h, the AnMBR system demonstrated an impressively low net electric energy consumption of merely 0.05 kW·h/m3, resulting in a net greenhouse gas emission of 0.015 CO2-eq/m3, cutting 85% compared to the conventional activated sludge process. Achievements in this study provide key parameters for the ambient operation of AnMBR and demonstrate that AnMBR is an energy-saving and low-carbon solution for low-strength wastewater treatment.

Abstract:Syngas purification via wet-scrubbing processes generates a relevant amount of wastewater, which requires proper treatments before its disposal or reuse. Integrating chemical with cost-saving biological approaches represent a valuable alternative to traditional chemical-physical treatments. This study investigated the effectiveness of the BIO&CHEM treatment scheme for the treatment and reuse of wastewater collected from a wet-scrubber unit (chemical oxygen demand, COD = 2600 mg/L) containing several hazardous pollutants such as phenol (110 mg/L) and xylene (64 mg/L). The BIO&CHEM system included a sequencing batch biofilter granular reactor (SBBGR) and an ozonation unit that were operated at different hydraulic retention times (HRTs, from 5 to 1 day) and transferred ozone doses (TODs, 400, 280 and 250 mg/Linf), respectively. When a 4 d-HRT was selected, biologically treated wastewater was characterized by a COD of 140 mg/L and its toxicity on Daphnia magna was decreased from 100% to 5%. The integration between the biological SBBGR-based treatment (HRT = 1.5 d) and the ozonation (TOD = 280 mg/Linf) lowered effluent COD to 33 mg/L and erased toxicity on Daphnia magna. This operating condition resulted the most sustainable enabling multiple wastewater reuse and a significant reduction of plant size comparing with the biological treatment. Furthermore, the investigated aromatic and polyaromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and volatile organic compounds (VOCs; including benzene, toluene, xylene and phenol) were completely removed. The analysis of the reactor biomass, performed at the end of the experimental trial, excluded also their mere accumulation within the reactor due to absorption or adsorption on the sludge.

Abstract:Nature (ecosystem) based processes for wastewater treatment include constructed wetlands (CWs), waste stabilization ponds, vegetated drainage ditches, buffer zones, instream or bankside river techniques, and mixotrophic systems, where light and CO2 are utilized, in addition to organic carbon compounds, by algal cultures. Algae-based systems can simultaneously remove organic matter, N, and P and may offer substantial energetic advantages compared to traditional biological treatment systems, require small spatial footprint, and contribute to biofuels production and CO2 emissions mitigation. Bioelectrochemical systems (BES) such as microbial fuel cells (MFCs) present characteristics compatible with the use in isolated realities for water and wastewater treatment with contextual energy recovery and may be combined with other nature-based process technologies to achieve good treatment and energy efficiencies. Despite that their application in real-scale plants has not been assessed yet, the most probable outcome will be the in situ/on site treatment (or pretreatment) of wastes for small “in house” plants not connected to the sewerage network. This paper focuses on the current practices and perspectives of hybrid nature-based systems, such as constructed wetlands and microalgae integrated phytoremediation plants, and their possible integration with microbial electrochemical technologies to increase recovery possibilities from wastes and positively contribute to a green economy approach.

Abstract:The present work involved an assessment of the technical feasibility of coupling AnMBR, primary settling and anaerobic digestion to treat sulfate-rich wastewater at ambient temperature. The innovative approach used focused on reducing the carbon footprint of wastewater treatment while maximizing the energy recovered from influent organic matter. In this process, primary settling reduces the COD/SO4-S ratio in the influent of the AnMBR system and completely removes organic matter by sulfate-reducing bacteria (SRB), while increasing the COD/SO4-S ratio in the sidestream anaerobic digester (AD), enhancing energy recovery and biogas quality. This approach has the significant advantage of only producing methane in the AD, so that the AnMBR produces a high-quality, methane-free effluent with no environmental impact from fugitive methane emissions. The performance of this treatment scheme was assessed by operating a demonstration-scale AnMBR plant fed by primary settled municipal wastewater at the hydraulic retention times of 25, 12 and 8.5 h. The results showed that the COD and BOD removed by SRB enabled setting the discharge limits at 25 and 12 h and lowered the carbon footprint to levels below those of an AnMBR plant fed by raw municipal wastewater, mainly by eliminating fugitive methane emissions.

Abstract:Individual biological water treatment techniques often prove ineffective in removing accumulated high concentrations of nitrogen and phosphorus in the late stages of biofloc aquaculture. To address this issue, we integrated a previously developed autotrophic denitrification and nitrification integrated constructed wetland (ADNI-CW) with a microalgal membrane photobioreactor (MPBR). Under high nitrogen and phosphorus pollution loads in the influent, the standalone ADNI-CW system achieved removal rates of only 24.17 % ± 2.82 % for total nitrogen (TN) and 25.30 % ± 2.59 % for total phosphorus (TP). The optimal conditions for TN and TP degradation and microalgal biomass production in the Chlorella MPBR, determined using response surface methodology, were an inoculum OD<sub>680</sub> of 0.394, light intensity of 161.583 μmol/m<sup>2</sup>/s, and photoperiod of 16.302 h light:7.698 h dark. Under the optimal operating conditions, the integrated ADNI-CW-MPBR system achieved remarkable TN and TP removal rates of 92.63 % ± 2.8 % and 77.46 % ± 8.41 %, respectively, and a substantial microalgal biomass yield of 54.58 ± 6.8 mg/L/day. This accomplishment signifies the successful achievement of efficient nitrogen and phosphorus removal from high-pollution-load marine aquaculture wastewater along with the acquisition of valuable microalgal biomass. A preliminary investigation of the microbial community composition and algal-bacterial interactions in different operational stages of the MPBR system revealed that unclassified_d__Bacteria, Chlorophyta, and Planctomycetes were predominant phyla. The collaborative relationships between bacteria and Chlorella surpassed competition, ensuring highly efficient nitrogen and phosphorus removal in the MPBR system. This study laid the foundation for the green and sustainable development of the aquaculture industry.

A contribution to resource recovery from wastewater. Anaerobic processes for organic matter and nitrogen treatment

Abstract:Organic matter and nutrients present in urban and industrial wastewater should be removed or valorised to reduce its impact on the environment. Conventional wastewater treatments are focused on the removal of these pollution sources at the minimum cost. The idea of resource recovery from wastewater is changing the concept of the conventional wastewater treatment plants that tend to incorporate little by little processes as anaerobic digestion, MBR, biofilm, granulation, etc. However, their application to obtain reusable by-products from wastes should be cost effective. Winery wastewater is an effluent with a highly biodegradable organic load, worth considering for biogas production, and low nutrient content. A sidestream anaerobic membrane bioreactor (AnMBR) was started up and operated under organic load oscillations. The stable operation was assured by keeping a ratio between intermediate alkalinity and total alkalinity (IA/TA) below 0.3 achieving a 96.7±2.7% COD removal efficiency. The biogas production varied according with the OLR that was on average 0.50±0.17 m(3)(biogas)/m(-3)(digester)/d(-1) with an 87.1±3.0% of methane. The external membrane module reached a flux of 20.2 ± 8.5 LMH at a crossflow velocity of 0.64 m s-1. The crossflow velocity helped to remove the cake layer attached on the membrane that was the main contribution (>80%) to flux decline. The energy demand of the AnMBR was calculated considering the net energy production of a combined heat and power (CHP) unit. It was concluded that only when influent COD was over 3.25 gCOD 1:1- the energy balance was positive. Considering the upscaling of the AnMBR of the present study, the submerged membrane configuration would be a more feasible option due to its lower operational costs, especially in winter season. Simulating the conditions of winter season, winery wastewater was treated in the AnMBR at low temperatures of 25°C and 15°C. Since the organic load of winery wastewater in winter is much lower than in summer (vintage season), the average OLR applied was 0.32 and 0.29 kgCOD m(-3)(digester)/d(-1) the average COD removal reached was 80% and 71% at 25°C and 15°C., respectively. Moreover, higher degree of fouling was observed despite the amount of suspended solids was lower, so frequent cleanings were necessary. The effluent of anaerobic digestion often requires a post-treatment to remove nutrients, especially nitrogen. Compared with conventional biological nitrogen removal, nitritation/denitritation (N/DN) via nitrite represent a 25% less aeration and 40% less external carbon source. In order to reach higher flexibility and reducing space requirements, N/DN can be carried out in a sequencing batch reactor (SBR). Under feast and famine conditions applied in the SBR, storage compounds can be served as internal carbon sources for post-anoxic denitrification. A novel scheme was developed for the treatment of municipal wastewater; consisting in an UASB reactor followed by a short cut sequencing batch reactor (scSBR) in the main water line. Nitritation/denitritation was integrated with the selection of polyhydroxyalkanoate (PHA) storing biomass. Biowaste fermented liquid was applied as carbon source in the feast regime. The average nitrogen removal was 83%. After achieving an acceptable ammonia removal of 93%, there was enough available PHA for the subsequent denitritation, reaching a maximum nitrite removal of 98%. The maximum PHA content was 10.6% (gPHA gTSS-1) after 10 h of accumulation when biowaste fermented liquid (C/N/P= 100/4.5/0.42) was applied. Nitrogen removal limits could be successfully met while PHA-storing biomass was selected. Although higher PHA yields can be achieved under complete aerobic conditions, this novel scheme presents an added value due to the integration of the PHA production in the nitritation/denitritation process.

Abstract:Integrated wastewater treatment processes are accepted as the best option for sustainable and unrestricted onsite water reuse. In this study, moving bed biofilm reactor (MBBR), membrane bioreactor (MBR), and direct contact membrane distillation (DCMD) treatment steps were integrated successively to obtain the combined advantages of these processes for industrial wastewater treatment. The MBBR step acts as the first step in the biological treatment and also mitigates foulant load on the MBR. Similarly, MBR acts as the second step in the biological treatment and serves as a pretreatment prior to the DCMD step. The latter acts as a final treatment to produce high-quality water. A laboratory scale integrated MBBR/MBR/DCMD experimental system was used for assessing the treatment efficiency of primary treated (PTIWW) and secondary treated (STIWW) industrial wastewater in terms of permeate water flux, effluent quality, and membrane fouling. The removal efficiency of total dissolved solids (TDS) and effluent permeate flux of the three-step process (MBBR/MBR/DCMD) were better than the two-step (MBR/DCMD) process. In the three-step process, the average removal efficiency of TDS was 99.85% and 98.16% when treating STIWW and PTIWW, respectively. While in the case of the two-step process, the average removal efficiency of TDS was 93.83% when treating STIWW. Similar trends were observed for effluent permeate flux values which were found, in the case of the three-step process, 62.6% higher than the two-step process, when treating STIWW in both cases. Moreover, the comparison of the quality of the effluents obtained with the analysed configurations with that obtained by Jeddah Industrial Wastewater Treatment Plant proved the higher performance of the proposed membrane processes.

Abstract:Anaerobic and membrane technologies are a promising combination to decrease the energy consumption associated with wastewater treatment, allowing the recovery of resources: organic matter as biomethane, nutrient assimilation by microalgae and reclaimed water. In this study, domestic wastewater was treated using a combination of an upflow anaerobic sludge blanket sludge reactor (UASB) and a membrane photobioreactor (MPBR). The outdoor facilities were operated continuously for three months under unfavourable environmental conditions such as lack of temperature control, winter season with lower solar irradiation and lower daylight hours which was a challenge for the present work, not previously described. The energetic valorisation of the organic matter present in the wastewater by biomethane produced in the UASB would contribute to reducing overall facilities' energy requirements. The ultrafiltration (UF) membrane facilitated the harvesting of biomass, operating at 10 L·h-1·m-2 during the experimental period. Although the main contribution to fouling was irreversible, chemical cleanings were not necessary due to effective fouling control, which prevented the final TMP from exceeding 25 kPa. In addition, microalgae-bacterial consortium developed without prior inoculation were harvested from the MPBR using membrane assistance. The obtained biomass was also successfully tested as a biostimulant for corn germination/growth, as well as a biopesticide against Rhizoctonia solani and Fusarium oxysporum.
Integrated thiosulfate-driven denitrification, partial nitrification and anammox process in membrane-aerated biofilm reactor for low-carbon, energy-efficient biological nitrogen removal

Abstract:Combining multiple bioprocesses in a single membrane-aerated biofilm reactor (MABR) unit for wastewater treatment is an emerging research focus. This study investigated the feasibility of coupling thiosulfate-driven denitrification (TDD) with partial nitrification and anammox (PNA) in a MABR for the treatment of ammonium-containing wastewater. The integrated bioprocess was tested over a continuous operation period (>130 d) in two MABRs: one with a polyvinylidene fluoride membrane (MABR-1), and the other with micro-porous aeration tubes covered with non-wovenpolyester fabrics (MABR-2). After start-up, the MABR-1 and MABR-2 based on the TDD-PNA process achieved satisfactory total nitrogen removal efficiencies of 63% and 76%, with maximum oxygen utilisation efficiencies of up to 66% and 80% and nitrogen removal fluxes of 1.3 and 4.7 gN/(m2·d), respectively. Predictions from the AQUASIM-model verified the integrated bioprocess. These lab scale findings confirmed the applicability of MABR technology for simultaneous sulfur and nitrogen removal, promising for pilot-scale application.

Abstract:Membrane aerated biofilm reactors (MABRs) represent energy-efficient technology for biological nitrogen removal (BNR) that brings wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) closer to carbon neutrality. In a MABR, gas-permeable hydrophobic membranes supply oxygen and serve as carriers for biofilm attachment. Given the importance of sustainable nitrogen removal from wastewater, MABR technology has attracted significant attention in recent years, leading to advances in theoretical understanding and practical applications, particularly in coupling with novel BNR processes (e.g., simultaneous nitrification/denitrification [SND] and partial nitritation/anaerobic ammonium oxidation [PN/A]). This review summarizes the intrinsic characteristics of MABRs (e.g., bubbleless aeration, counter diffusion) and their technical advantages (e.g., energy efficiency, low greenhouse gas and volatile organic compound emissions, compatibility with novel BNR processes). We also describe the robust SND performance of MABRs and the implications for upgrading existing WWTPs. Additionally, we systematically present the technological breakthroughs in the integration of the PN/A process into MABRs. Finally, we provide insights into the applicability of novel BNR-based MABRs in efficient WWTP construction and discuss future research directions of MABR technology based on the interdisciplinary integration of materials science, information technology, and biotechnology. This review contributes to a deeper understanding of MABR applications in wastewater nitrogen removal and provides guidance for further developments of this cost-efficient technology to achieve sustainable energy performance in future WWTPs.

Advanced wastewater treatment with microalgae-indigenous bacterial interactions

Abstract:Microalgal-indigenous bacterial wastewater treatment (MBWT) emerges as a promising approach for the concurrent removal of nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P). Despite its potential, the prevalent use of MBWT in batch systems limits its broader application. Furthermore, the success of MBWT critically depends on the stable self-adaptation and synergistic interactions between microalgae and indigenous bacteria, yet the underlying biological mechanisms are not fully understood. Here we explore the viability and microbial dynamics of a continuous flow microalgae-indigenous bacteria advanced wastewater treatment system (CFMBAWTS) in processing actual secondary effluent, with a focus on varying hydraulic retention times (HRTs). The research highlights a stable, mutually beneficial relationship between indigenous bacteria and microalgae. Microalgae and indigenous bacteria can create an optimal environment for each other by providing essential cofactors (like iron, vitamins, and indole-3-acetic acid), oxygen, dissolved organic matter, and tryptophan. This collaboration leads to effective microbial growth, enhanced N and P removal, and energy generation. The study also uncovers crucial metabolic pathways, functional genes, and patterns of microbial succession. Significantly, the effluent NH 4 + -N and P levels complied with the Chinese national Class-II, Class-V, Class-IA, and Class-IB wastewater discharge standards when the HRT was reduced from 15 to 6 h. Optimal results, including the highest rates of CO 2 fixation (1.23 g L −1 ), total energy yield (32.35 kJ L −1 ), and the maximal lipid (33.91 %) and carbohydrate (41.91 %) content, were observed at an HRT of 15 h. Overall, this study not only confirms the feasibility of CFMBAWTS but also lays a crucial foundation for enhancing our understanding of this technology and propelling its practical application in wastewater treatment plants.

Abstract:To find a possible trade-off between effluent quality, sludge production, energy consumption and GHG emissions, this study monitored the carbon and nutrient removal and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in a membrane bioreactor (MBR) pilot plant with intermittent aeration (IA). The pilot plant was operated by alternating aerobic and anoxic conditions inside the biological reactor. Up to 98.2 % of carbon and 76.4 % of nitrogen were respectively remove through this MBR pilot plant with IA. The carbon footprint was equal to 2.4 kgCO 2eq m −3 . Indirect emissions contributed the most to the carbon footprint (55.3 %), mainly due to energy consumption, despite the alterations in aeration during the pilot plant operation. The result of this study provides theoretical guidance for building the wastewater treatment plant in a sustainable way.

Abstract:To reduce the carbon emission of sewage treatment, a novel adsorption-biodegradation (A-B) process, flocculation pretreatment as A-stage and nitritation-denitritation MABR as B-stage, was proposed in the study. It was found that 27.37 %–49.69 % of organics can be removed from actual wastewater by flocculation with polyaluminium ferric chloride (PAFC). The pretreated wastewater could be further treated by nitritation-denitritation MABR with low aeration pressure (2–5 kPa) without any extra organics. The NH 4 + -N, total nitrogen (TN), and chemical oxygen demand (COD) removal efficiency can reach 100 %, 84.04 %, and 98.54 %, respectively. It was also found that the relative abundances of ammonia-oxidizing bacteria (AOB) (3.81 %–4.76 %) and denitrifying bacteria (DB) (4.30 %–5.59 %) were higher than that of nitrite-oxidizing bacteria (NOB) (2.08 %–2.39 %) in the MABR even after 130 days of operation according to the microorganism identification by 16S rRNA sequencing technology. This implied that low oxygen aeration in MABR can prevent NOB from becoming dominant bacteria. Furthermore, it was found that there were indeed traces of anaerobic ammonia oxidation (Anammox) bacteria (0.04 %–0.08 %) and were closely surrounded by other microorganisms in the MABR based on fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) technology. In addition, the microbial nitrogen metabolism process in the MABR was further analyzed according to the Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG). The promising mainstream A-B process proposed in this study was expected to achieve nitrogen removal with little carbon and energy consumption in wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs).

Abstract:Membrane-aerated biofilm reactors (MABRs) have aroused increasing attention due to their excellent performance in treating wastewater, where the membranes behave as bio-carriers for microorganisms and bubbleless air diffusers. The MABR technology has not been fully commercialized due to reactor design and low total nitrogen (TN) removal efficiency at short hydraulic retention times (HRT). In this study, a hybrid system of MABR 1 integrated with an anoxic nano-biotechnological reactor filled with Granulated Nanoscale Oxyhydroxides of Fe (GNOF) media was evaluated to assess the improvement in nitrogen removal performance at 12, 10, and 4 h of HRTs. At the same time, another MABR (MABR 2) was operated individually at 12, 10, 8, 6, 4, and 2 h of HRTs to assess the influence of HRT on nitrogen removal performance. An enhancement in removal performance was reported in the hybrid MABR-GNOF, achieving the highest removal efficiencies of 74.3 ± 3.1% for ammonium nitrogen (NH4+-N), 69.8 ± 2.1% for total nitrogen (TN), and 90.9 ± 1.7% for chemical oxygen demand (COD), at 12 h HRT. The hybrid MABR-GNOF system attained 18% higher nitrogen removal than the MABR-only system at 12 h of HRT. A simultaneous anoxic nitrification-denitrification and COD oxidation might be developed for the removal of COD, NH4+-N, and TN from domestic wastewater by using GNOF as an electron acceptor in the hybrid MABR-GNOF unit. The findings in this study confirmed the possibility of integration of GNOF and MABR on a pilot scale and are promising for the application of this hybrid system on a full scale.

Abstract:High-strength industrial wastewater containing approximately 2000 mg/L of N , N -dimethylformamide (DMF) was treated by the anaerobic membrane bioreactor (AnMBR) during a long-term operation with the concept of carbon neutrality in this study. Bio-methane was recovered as bio-energy or bio-resource from DMF-containing wastewater along with the CO 2 emission reduction. The results are clear evidence of the feasibility of carbon-neutral treatment of DMF-containing wastewater by the AnMBR. With an effective degradation under the organic loading rate of 6.53 COD kg/m 3 /d at the HRT of 12 h, the AnMBR completely covered the energy consumption during long-term operation by saving electricity of 4.16 kWh/m 3 compared with the conventional activated sludge process. The CO 2 emission of the AnMBR was just 1.06 kg/m 3 , remarkably reducing 1.45 kg/m 3 of CO 2 . The treatment of DMF-containing wastewater by the AnMBR perfectly realized the goal of carbon neutrality, and was considered as an alternative to the conventional activated sludge process.
