Abstract:L'etude proposee a consiste a evaluer et a optimiser un nouveau bioreacteur de type lit fluidise en boucle fonctionnant en discontinu (EFBBR). Le temps de melange hydraulique a ete caracterise et l'hydrodynamique du reacteur est proche de celle d'un reacteur parfaitement agite. Le coefficient de transfert KLa augmente d'une part avec l'accroissement de la charge en air mais egalement, pour un meme ratio gaz/liquide, lorsque la perte de charge est importante. Le KLaa mesure a une valeur de 0,62 a 1.37 10-2 s-1. Dans le cadre du traitement d'eaux usees, de bons resultats sont obtenus sur les parametres suivants : COT, COD, NH4-N, PO4-P ainsi que sur l'elimination du phosphore total (PT). L'effet de la concentration initiale en NH4-N a ete etudie sur la nitrification. Seule la nitritation intervient pendant la phase aerobie et la denitrification demarre naturellement a partir des nitrites durant la phase anoxique. L'etude de l'alternance de phases en anaerobie et aerobie dans le SBR avec des concentrations forte puis faible en oxygene semble le facteur favorable a l'accumulation de nitrites. Des correlations entre la structure et les parametres d'activite des biofilms ont ete observees, les proteines etant relies a l'activite et l'epaisseur du biofilm fonction de la production exopolysaccharides.
Optimizing nutrient removal of moving bed biofilm reactor process using response surface methodology

Abstract:The potential of 3-stages process (anaerobic, anoxic and moving bed biofilm reactor (MBBR)) for organic matter and nutrient removals from secondary WWTP effluents at various hydraulic retention time (HRT) and nitrate recycle ratio (R) was investigated. Percentage removals of total nitrogen (%TNremoval) and phosphorous (%TPremoval) were optimized using response surface methodology (RSM). Under optimized conditions (HRTtotal = 12.8 hr and R = 1.5) significant chemical oxygen demand removal (%CODremoval), %TNremoval and %TPremoval of 95.5%, 96.2%, 94.70% were attained. The MMBR effectively reduced organic matter and nutrient under low HRT and R. %TNremoval was improved by increasing the HRTR2 up to 1.5 h at R ≤ 2. Bio-uptake of phosphorus and nitrate is controlled by release of secondary phosphorous. Reactors demonstrated stable biofilm characteristics except for a slight decrease in biofilm thickness due to flow-shear stress. The 3-stages process performed four times higher than suspended growth process and similar to 5-stage Bardenpho-MBBR.
Membrane Photo-Bioreactor Coupled with Heterogeneous Fenton Fluidized Bed for High Salinity Wastewater Treatment: Pollutant Removal, Photosynthetic Bacteria Harvest and Membrane Anti-Fouling Analysis

Abstract:In this study, efficient photosynthetic bacteria (PSB)-GO/PVDF membrane photo-bioreactor (MPBR) combined with heterogeneous Fenton fluidized bed was built and successfully applied for treatment of actual refractory seafood-processing wastewater with extremely high salinity. As effective pre-treatment, heterogeneous Fenton was designed for removing non-biodegradable organics and reducing iron-sludge discharge. In MPBR, GO/PVDF membrane fabricated by chemical grafting GO nanosheets was first used for salt-tolerated PSB harvest. Compared with original PVDF membrane, GO/PVDF membrane exhibited enhanced hydrophilicity, better permeability (4.4 times) and attractive flux recover rate (94%), which was attributed to remarkable reduction in hydrophobic proteins amount of extracellular polymeric substances (EPS). Importantly, COD and NH3-N removal efficiency of MPBR with GO/PVDF membrane were kept about 95 and 98%, respectively, and average biomass productivity reached as high as 105 mg/L·d. This study provides a promising and economical way to build efficient MBR combined with new materials for high salinity hazardous wastewater treatment.
COD removal from expanded granular sludge bed effluent using a moving bed biofilm reactor and their microbial community analysis

Abstract:The bioreactor performance of a moving bed biofilm reactor (MBBR) as post-treatment of expanded granular sludge bed (EGSB) effluent was investigated. Moreover, the microbial communities of the two bioreactors during different operation periods were studied. The MBBR was efficient for COD removal with the mean efficiency of 82.4%, and produced an effluent with high and stable quality against shock loading resulting from the low temperature applied to EGSB. The study indicates that the microbial community in the reactors could adapt to perturbations such as influent wastewater characteristics and operation temperature, which is beneficial to maintain efficient and stable COD removal in the combined EGSB-MBBR system. Archaeal 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis indicated the presence of Methanomethylovorans , Methanolinea , Methanoregula boonei , Methanosarcina barkeri , and Methanospirillum hungatei in the EGSB. Bacterial 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis indicated the presence of Runella limosa , Dokdonella , Sphaerotilus , Hydrogenophaga , and Pseudomonas in the MBBR. The EGSB-MBBR system established here could be used as an efficient option for organic matter removal, which holds a great potential in practical applications for nutrients (N and P) removal.

The COD, TN and TP removal efficiencies were about 95%, 72% and 98%, respectively. In this system, the maximum TN and COD removal were achieved in anoxic tank, but it was achieved in aerobic tank for TP removal. The EC bed enhanced the effluent quality, especially the efficiency in advanced P removal. From these results, it was concluded that the new process could be a reliable option for providing excellent effluent quality.

Abstract:An expanded granular sludge bed (EGSB)-moving bed biomembrane reactor (MBBR) system was used to treat high-concentration and refractory polyester wastewater (COD≥10 000 mg/L,BOD5/COD<0.3). The experimental results show that:Under the conditions of temperature (37±1) ℃,HRT 15.4 h,influent COD 10 000 mg/L,the volume loading of EGSB can reach 5.31 kg/(m3·d) and the COD removal rate can come up to above 95%; Under the conditions of ambient temperature and HRT 48.0 h,the COD and BOD5 of MBBR effluent can be less than 100 mg/L and 30 mg/L respectively,which can meet the first grade standards of GB8978-1996.
Biomass granulation in an upflow anaerobic sludge blanket reactor treating 500 m3/day low-strength sewage and post treatment in high-rate algal pond

Abstract:A pilot-scale upflow anaerobic sludge blanket-moving bed biofilm (UASB-MBB) reactor followed by a high-rate algal pond (HRAP) was designed and operated to remove organic matter, nutrients and pathogens from sewage and to facilitate reuse. For an influent chemical oxygen demand (COD) concentration of 233 ± 20 mg/L, final effluent COD was 50 ± 6 mg/L. Successful biomass granulation was observed in the sludge bed of the upflow anaerobic sludge blanket (UASB) reactor after 5 months of operation. Ammonia removal in HRAP was 85.1 ± 2.4% with average influent and effluent ammonia nitrogen concentrations of 20 ± 3 mg/L and 3 ± 1 mg/L, respectively. Phosphate removal after treatment in the HRAP was 91 ± 1%. There was a 2-3 log scale pathogen removal after treatment in HRAP with most probable number (MPN) of the final effluent being 600-800 per 100 mL, which is within acceptable standards for surface irrigation. The blackwater after treatment in UASB-MBBR-HRAP is being reused for gardening and landscaping. This proper hydro-dynamically designed UASB reactor demonstrated successful granulation and moving bed media improved sludge retention in UASB reactor. This combination of UASB-MBB reactor followed by HRAP demonstrated successful sewage treatment for a year covering all seasons.

Abstract:High-rate processes have been investigated for the recovery of organic matter from municipal wastewater. High-rate membrane bioreactors (HR-MBRs) may simultaneously achieve the increased recovery of carbon and high effluent quality, although control of membrane fouling is extremely difficult. To address the severe fouling in HR-MBRs, the combination of granular scouring and frequent chemically enhanced backwashing was examined. The use of robust flat-sheet ceramic membranes enabled the application of those cleaning strategies. Experiments were carried out at an existing wastewater treatment plant. To operate as a high-rate system, the bioreactor solid residence time and hydraulic residence time were set at 0.5 days and 1.6 h, respectively. Although a relatively high flux of 20 L m−2 h−1 was applied, the proposed HR-MBR exhibited a very low fouling rate of 1.3 kPa/day. The system could recover >70% of the carbon from raw wastewater, whereas the concentration of chemical oxygen demand in the effluent was lowered to <20 mg/L. The performance of the proposed HR-MBR observed in this study was clearly superior to those reported in previous related studies.

Abstract:At present, there is great concern about limited water resources and water quality, which require a more advanced technology. The Moving Bed Biofilm Reactor (MBBR) has been shown to be an efficient technology for removal of organic matter and nutrients in industrial and urban wastewater treatment. However, there are some pollutants which are more difficult to remove by biological processes, so this process can be improved with additional physical and chemical treatments such as electrocoagulation, which appears to be a promising technology in electrochemical treatments. In this research, urban wastewater was treated in an MBBR plant with an electrocoagulation pre-treatment. K1 from AnoxKaldnes and AQWISE ABC5 from Aqwise were the carriers studied under three different filling ratios (20, 35, and 50%). The experimental pilot plant had four bioreactors with 20 L of operation volume and a common feed tank with 100 L of operation volume. The movement of the carriers was generated by aeration and stirrer systems. Organic matter removal was studied by analysis of soluble chemical oxygen demand (sCOD). The maximum organic matter removal in this MBBR system was 65.8% ± 1.4% and 78.4% ± 0.1% for K1 and Aqwise ABC5 carriers, respectively. Moreover, the bacterial diversity of the biofilm was studied by temperature-gradient gel electrophoresis (TGGE) of PCR-amplified partial 16S rRNA genes. 20 prominent TGGE bands were successfully reamplified and sequenced, being the predominant population: β-Proteobacteria, α-Proteobacteria, and Actinobacteria.

Abstract:Wastewater from butyl rubber production is causing an increasing environmental problem due to its large quantity and complex quality. In this paper, two types of wastewaters generated from rubber synthesis, i.e. alkaline wastewater (AW) and cleaning and flushing wastewater (CFW), were investigated. Coagulation and flocculation were firstly applied to remove suspended solids (SS) from the AW. By single factor experiment, the optimum operational conditions were obtained as pH 8, PAC dosage 40 mg/L, and PAM dosage 8 mg/L, by which the Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD) removal was 31.5 +/- 22.4%, and the turbidity of supernatant was 2.7 +/- 0.4 NTU. Subsequently, a combined process of hydrolysis acidification (HA) - biological contact oxidation (BCO) - membrane bioreactor (MBR) was designed to treat the mixture of treated AW and raw CFW, according to the biodegradability of the hybrid wastewater. Under the hydraulic retention times (HRTs) of 6h (HA), 4h (BCO), and 10h (MBR), respectively, a COD removal of 88.6 +/- 6.3% was achieved. The organic components of raw water and a series of effluent of each treatment unit were analyzed by GC/MS. Biological acute toxicities of the same samples were measured using luminescent bacterium test. Some transformations of organic components caused by the treatment of HA were revealed. The toxicity of the water was enhanced by HA, and removed by MBR subsequently, which indicated the detoxification of MBR.
Simultaneous Removal of Organic Matter and Nutrients from High Strength Organic Wastewater Using Sequencing Batch Reactor (SBR)

Abstract:Industrial wastewater discharges often contain high levels of organic matter and nutrients, which can lead to eutrophication and constitute a serious hazard to receiving waters and aquatic life. The purpose of this study was to examine the efficacy of using a sequencing batch reactor (SBR) to treat high-strength organic wastewater for the removal of both chemical oxygen demand (COD) and nutrients (nitrogen and phosphorus). At a constant COD concentration of approximately 1000 mg/L, the effects of cycle time (3 and 9 h) and various C:N:P ratios (100:5:2, 100:5:1, 100:10:1, and 100:10:2) were investigated using four identical SBRs (R1, R2, R3, and R4). According to experimental data, a significant high removal, i.e., 90%, 98.5%, and 84.8%, was observed for COD, NH3-N, and PO43−-P, respectively, when C:N:P was 100:5:1, at a cycle time of 3 h. Additionally, when cycle time was increased to 9 h, the highest levels of COD removal (95.7%), NH3-N removal (99.6%), and PO43−-P removal (90.31%) were accomplished. Also, in order to comprehend the primary impacts and interactions among the various process variables, the data was statistically examined using analysis of variance (ANOVA) at a 95% confidence level, which revealed that the interaction of cycle time and C/N ratio, cycle time and C/P ratio is significant for COD and NH3-N removal. However, the same interaction was found to be insignificant for PO43−-P removal. Sludge volume index (SVI30 and SVI10) and sludge settleability were studied, and the best settling was found in R3 with SVI30 of 55 mL/g after 9 h. Further evidence that flocs were present in reactors came from an average ratio of SVI 30/SVI 10 = 0.70 after 9 h and 0.60 after 3 h.

Enhanced ammonium removal from liquid anaerobic digestion residuals in an advanced sequencing batch reactor system

Abstract:When treating effluents from anaerobic processing of organic wastes, the challenge lies in the large quantity of recalcitrant COD and in the high nitrogen content. The data presented in this study illustrate an advanced SBR concept that is able to significantly reduce the organic load. It was found that undigested mashed bio-waste bypassing the anaerobic digestion is highly suitable as an external carbon source to compensate deficiencies of readily biodegradable BOD required for denitrification. In order to utilize the carbon source as efficiently as possible, the SBR was operated in a mode by which nitrification/denitrification is achieved by a shortcut process using nitrite. This procedure reduced the requirement of an external carbon source to only 5% (v/v). Moreover, through an optimized SBR sequence for an influent concentration of 14,000 mg COD/l and 3,800 mg TN/l, nearly complete removal of nitrogen (>95%) was achieved. The average removal rates for COD and BOD were 83% and 86%, respectively. The applied hydraulic retention time (HRT) of the SBR was 6.8 days. The elevated temperature of 30-41 degrees C in the reactor as a result of the high biological activity was advantageous in terms of enhanced reaction kinetics and also provided better process stability.
A Membrane Bioreactor for an Innovative Biological Nitrogen Removal Process.

Abstract:A hybrid system has been developed for biological nitrogen removal through nitrification-denitrification. The system includes an aerobic tank and an anoxic tank with an intermediate sludge settler connected to a membrane bioreactor (MBR) with a submerged 0.4 microm hollow-fiber membrane module. The laboratory system has a total working volume of 6.5 L treating a glucose-based synthetic wastewater. The experimental results demonstrate that the new process is highly effective for simultaneous organic and nitrogen removal. During the stationary operation, a sludge SS (suspended solids) concentration of 6 g/L or higher can be maintained in the reactors. The system has a COD (chemical oxygen demand) loading rate of up to 2,100 mg/L-d and a total nitrogen loading rate of up to 170 mg N/L-d. More than 95% COD can be degraded, and the total nitrogen removal efficiency can be 90% or higher as the nitrogen is reduced from 100 to around 7.5 mg/L. A high quality effluent is produced with a SS of less than 1 mg/L. With the MBR, organic degradation, nitrogen removal and sludge-liquid separation can be well achieved within a short HRT of about 10 hr.

Abstract:Anaerobic fluidized membrane bioreactors (AFMBRs) have been mainly developed as a post-treatment process to produce high quality effluent with very low energy consumption. The performance of an AFMBR was examined using the effluent from a microbial fuel cell (MFC) treating domestic wastewater, as a function of AFMBR hydraulic retention times (HRTs) and organic matter loading rates. The MFC-AFMBR achieved 89 +/- 3% removal of the chemical oxygen demand (COD), with an effluent of 36 +/- 6 mg-COD/L over 112 days operation. The AFMBR had very stable operation, with no significant changes in COD removal efficiencies, for HRTs ranging from 1.2 to 3.8 h, although the effluent COD concentration increased with organic loading. Transmembrane pressure (TMP) was low, and could be maintained below 0.12 bar through solids removal. This study proved that the AFMBR could be operated with a short HRT but a low COD loading rate was required to achieve low effluent COD. (C) 2016 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
Entrapped mixed microbial cell process for combined secondary and tertiary wastewater treatment.

Abstract:An entrapped mixed microbial cell (EMMC) process was investigated for simultaneous removal of carbon and nitrogen from a synthetic wastewater in a single bioreactor. The influent had a soluble chemical oxygen demand (SCOD)/nitrogen ratio varying from 4 to 15 and an alkalinity of 140 and 230 mg/L as calcium carbonate. An alternating schedule of intermittent aeration was used for two sizes of carriers: 10 X 10 X 10 mm(3) and 20 X 20 X 20 mm3. The medium carrier (10 X 10 X 10 mm3) was found to achieve higher removals of nitrogen, chemical oxygen demand, and 5-day biochemical oxygen demand of 92, 95, and 97%, respectively. These higher removal rates occurred at a 12-hour hydraulic retention time (HRT), an aeration/ nonaeration ratio of 0.5:2 hours, and an SCOD/nitrogen ratio of 15 in the influent. Influent alkalinity concentrations of 140 and 230 mg/L as calcium carbonate were found to have minimum effect on the removal of carbon and nitrogen. However, the oxidation-reduction potential, ranging from -100 to 400 mV (during air-off period), provides better nitrogen removal efficiency to maintain the total nitrogen (nitrate, nitrite, and ammonium) less than 10 mg/L when an SCOD/nitrogen ratio of 10 or 15 is maintained in the influent. Nitrogen removal efficiency increased with increasing ratios of SCOD/nitrogen in the influent (i.e., SCOD/ nitrogen ratio of 15 > 10 > 7 > 4.0). The results of actual wastewater operation based on a study of synthetic wastewater show that organics removal efficiencies (94.6 and 94.2%) and nitrogen removal efficiencies (61.0 and 60.9%) are similar for reactors packed with medium and large carriers, respectively, when they are operated with a 9-hour HRT, an air on/air off ratio of I hour:2 hours and an SCOD/nitrogen ratio of 4.6.
Evaluation of a Hybrid Moving Bed Biofilm Membrane Bioreactor and a Direct Contact Membrane Distillation System for Purification of Industrial Wastewater

Abstract:Integrated wastewater treatment processes are accepted as the best option for sustainable and unrestricted onsite water reuse. In this study, moving bed biofilm reactor (MBBR), membrane bioreactor (MBR), and direct contact membrane distillation (DCMD) treatment steps were integrated successively to obtain the combined advantages of these processes for industrial wastewater treatment. The MBBR step acts as the first step in the biological treatment and also mitigates foulant load on the MBR. Similarly, MBR acts as the second step in the biological treatment and serves as a pretreatment prior to the DCMD step. The latter acts as a final treatment to produce high-quality water. A laboratory scale integrated MBBR/MBR/DCMD experimental system was used for assessing the treatment efficiency of primary treated (PTIWW) and secondary treated (STIWW) industrial wastewater in terms of permeate water flux, effluent quality, and membrane fouling. The removal efficiency of total dissolved solids (TDS) and effluent permeate flux of the three-step process (MBBR/MBR/DCMD) were better than the two-step (MBR/DCMD) process. In the three-step process, the average removal efficiency of TDS was 99.85% and 98.16% when treating STIWW and PTIWW, respectively. While in the case of the two-step process, the average removal efficiency of TDS was 93.83% when treating STIWW. Similar trends were observed for effluent permeate flux values which were found, in the case of the three-step process, 62.6% higher than the two-step process, when treating STIWW in both cases. Moreover, the comparison of the quality of the effluents obtained with the analysed configurations with that obtained by Jeddah Industrial Wastewater Treatment Plant proved the higher performance of the proposed membrane processes.

Abstract:The membrane bioreactor (MBR) process synergistically combines biological treatment with membrane filtration, offering a compact design and enhanced operational flexibility. However, membrane fouling remains a critical bottleneck, limiting its widespread application, particularly in treating high-strength wastewater. Recent advances have demonstrated that integrating MBR systems with auxiliary processes such as adsorption, electrochemical treatments, algal-assisted systems, and others can significantly mitigate fouling and enhance treatment efficacy. This paper critically reviews various MBR hybrid configurations, examining their mechanisms, advantages, and limitations in terms of treatment performance and fouling control, while highlighting their potential to extend conventional MBR's applicability to challenging wastewaters and addressing operational challenges like economic viability and sustainability. Elaborated tables incorporating a wide variety of research studies within the realm of synchronization have been meticulously compiled to generate a comprehensive literature review.

Abstract:Environmental deterioration together with the need for water reuse and the increasingly restrictive legislation of water quality standards have led to a demand for compact, efficient and less energy consuming technologies for wastewater treatment. Aerobic granular sludge and membrane bioreactors (MBRs) are two technologies with several advantages, such as small footprint, high-microbial density and activity, ability to operate at high organic- and nitrogen-loading rates, and tolerance to toxicity. However, they also have some disadvantages. The aerobic granular sludge process generally requires post-treatment in order to fulfill effluent standards and MBRs suffer from fouling of the membranes. Integrating the two technologies could be a way of combining the advantages and addressing the main problems associated with both processes. The use of membranes to separate the aerobic granules from the treated water would ensure high-quality effluents suitable for reuse. Moreover, the use of granular sludge in MBRs has been shown to reduce fouling. Several recent studies have shown that the aerobic granular membrane bioreactor (AGMBR) is a promising hybrid process with many attractive features. However, major challenges that have to be addressed include how to achieve granulation and maintain granular stability during continuous operation of reactors. This paper aims to review the current state of research on AGMBR technology while drawing attention to relevant findings and highlight current limitations.
