Abstract:Mold growth on body donations remains an underreported yet serious issue in anatomical teaching. Bacterial and fungal growth pose health risks to lecturers and students, alongside with ethical and aesthetic concerns. However, limited information exists on the presence of bacteria and fungi on body donations and their underlying causes. To investigate the potential impact of airborne germs on body donation contamination, we conducted indoor air measurements before, during, and after our anatomical dissection course, with outdoor measurements serving as a control. Tissue samples from the dissected body donations were collected to assess the germ load, with qualitative and quantitative microbiological analyses. Air samples from the dissection hall contained no fungi, but various fungal species were identified in the adjacent stairways and outdoors which implies that fungal occurrence in the dissection hall air was independent of lecturers' and students' presence. Moreover, our results indicate that adequate ventilation filters can effectively reduce indoor fungal germs during courses, while the bacterial load in room air appears to increase, likely due to the presence of lecturers and students. Additionally, the tissue samples revealed no bacterial or fungal germs which implies that our ethanol-formalin-based embalming solution demonstrates an effective long-term antimicrobial preservation of corpses.

Abstract:BackgroundHuman autopsy is widely used to investigate and confirm the causes of death. Commonly reported cases involve the cardiovascular and cerebral systems. However, human autopsy practices have been restricted due to ethical and religious implications in many countries.AimThe study aims to know if using human autopsy techniques on animal models might be an effective way for teaching post-mortem autopsy to medical students and exposing them to clinical pathology involving vital organs in medical education and find out the role of peer-assisted learning in improving the process.MethodsTwo pre-lab sessions were conducted to emphasize the embryological and structural similarities and explain the differences between the human brain and heart and animal models: cow brain and sheep heart. Other two sessions of organ dissection were provided to perform human autopsy techniques on animal models practically for educational purposes. Peer-assisted tutoring was implemented. Questionnaires, interviews, and the Delphi technique were used to triangulate the assessment. A year later, participating foreign exchange students were interviewed to evaluate the long-term impacts based on Kirkpatrick models.ResultsThe questionnaire showed students’ satisfaction with the autopsy workshops and peer-assisted tutoring. The last session was attended by foreign exchange students whose feedback proves the implementation can be done in different medical education systems around the globe.ConclusionThis study shows that animal model autopsy provides a valuable alternative in medical education and improves the students’ comprehension and clinical skills, and peer-assisted learning has a secondary role in enhancing it.
Cadaveric dissection as an educational tool for anatomical sciences in the 21st century

Abstract:Anatomical education has been undergoing reforms in line with the demands of medical profession. The aim of the present study is to assess the impact of a traditional method like cadaveric dissection in teaching/learning anatomy at present times when medical schools are inclining towards student-centered, integrated, clinical application models. The article undertakes a review of literature and analyzes the observations made therein reflecting on the relevance of cadaveric dissection in anatomical education of 21st century. Despite the advent of modern technology and evolved teaching methods, dissection continues to remain a cornerstone of anatomy curriculum. Medical professionals of all levels believe that dissection enables learning anatomy with relevant clinical correlates. Moreover dissection helps to build discipline independent skills which are essential requirements of modern health care setup. It has been supplemented by other teaching/learning methods due to limited availability of cadavers in some countries. However, in the developing world due to good access to cadavers, dissection based teaching is central to anatomy education till date. Its utility is also reflected in the perception of students who are of the opinion that dissection provides them with a foundation critical to development of clinical skills. Researchers have even suggested that time has come to reinstate dissection as the core method of teaching gross anatomy to ensure safe medical practice. Nevertheless, as dissection alone cannot provide uniform learning experience hence needs to be complemented with other innovative learning methods in the future education model of anatomy. Abstract:For centuries cadaveric dissection has been a cornerstone of medical anatomy education. However, time and financial limitations in modern, compressed medical curricula, coupled with the abundance of alternate modalities, have raised questions about the role of dissection. This study was designed to explore student perceptions of the efficacy of a dissection program for learning musculoskeletal anatomy, and possible adaptations for appropriate inclusion of dissection in the modern medical curricula. A paper‐based questionnaire was used to collect data from 174 medical students after completion of cadaveric dissections. Data were analyzed using both quantitative and qualitative methods. Students strongly believed that cadaver‐based learning is essential to anatomy education and modern teaching modalities only complement this. Moreover, most students reported that dissection provided an additional, immersive learning experience that facilitated active learning and helped in developing manual competencies. Students with previous dissection experience or an interest in anatomy‐related specialties were significantly more likely to attend dissection sessions. Students found the procedural dissection components enhanced the knowledge of applied anatomy and beneficial for the development of clinical skills. They welcomed the idea of implementing more procedure‐based dissections alongside lectures and prosections‐based practical (PBP) sessions. Cadaveric dissection plays an integral role in medical anatomy education. Time restraints and an increased focus on clinical significance, however, demand carefully considered adaptations of existing dissection protocols. The introduction of PBP offers an innovative, highly‐engaging and clinically‐relevant package that would amalgamate skills essential to medical practice while retaining the benefits that have allowed dissection to stand the test of time.This article is protected by copyright. Abstract:Background Assessing the level of knowledge of anatomy of undergraduate students four years after their primary anatomy training will give a better indication as to which system of teaching is more effective. We aimed to ascertain which method was more effective at establishing a core of anatomy knowledge that could be recalled after a considerable amount of time. Methods We tested two groups of medical students in their final year on the key concepts of gross anatomy using a question paper that included true–false type questions and identification of anatomical line diagrams. These two batches of students followed a dissection-based curriculum and a newly introduced prosections-based curriculum at the beginning of their medical education. The prosections- based curriculum brought with it a reduction in the in-class teaching and learning activities when compared to the old curriculum. This would in turn reflect how much anatomy knowledge one would possess when they start to practise medicine as a newly qualified doctor and also embark on a postgraduate training programme. The two groups were subjected without prior warning to a question paper that had six questions, each with five true–false statements and four questions on identification and labelling of anatomical line diagrams. Results There was no statistically significant difference in the marks obtained for the true–false type questions between the two groups (p=0.08), but the prosections group obtained higher marks for the diagram identification questions (p=0.02). Conclusion A prosection-based curriculum when compared to a dissection-based curriculum was equally effective at establishing a core of gross anatomy knowledge.

Abstract:BACKGROUND: The relevance of anatomical dissection in instructing anatomy to medical, dental, and other health science students is indisputable. Ethiopian anatomists encountered challenges in obtaining human bodies for anatomy education and research, both prior to and following the COVID-19 outbreak. The challenges intensified during the pandemic, significantly affecting anatomy education in Ethiopia. This study seeks to investigate the sources of bodies for anatomy, spanning the periods before and after COVID-19, with a particular focus on identifying the primary challenges associated with sourcing of bodies in Ethiopia.METHODS: Fifty (50) anatomists completed a survey distributed to ten (10) randomly chosen medical institutions in Ethiopia. The survey gathered information on the body profile (number of bodies, age, sex, sources, and methods of body disposal), and the challenges faced during the sourcing of bodies in the years 2018 and 2023.RESULTS: A total of sixty-three (63) bodies were used by the sampled medical institutions between 2018 and 2023 academic years. All (100%) of the bodies used were unclaimed human bodies. Most (66.7%) of these bodies were males. The majority (65.5%) of these bodies were sourced from Tikur Anbessa hospital in Addis Ababa. None (0%) of the sampled medical institutions had body donation programs. Disposal of human tissues encompassed various methods, including the retention of skeletons, prosection of vital organs, and burial of remaining tissues. Economic constraints and the absence of a legal framework document were the main challenges in acquiring bodies in the pre-pandemic period. The COVID-19 pandemic prevention policies and the civil war further exacerbated the challenges in sourcing of bodies for anatomy dissections during the post-pandemic period.CONCLUSION: The reliance on unclaimed human bodies for anatomy education and research in Ethiopian medical institutions mirrors a common practice across many African countries. The authors suggest the development of a legislative framework or operational guidelines, coupled with empowering the medical institutions to outsource their own funding that will ultimately lead to an increased number of bodies available for anatomical dissection. Over time, implementation and promotion of body donation programs may also resolve body shortages for anatomy education in Ethiopia.

Abstract:Anatomy learned by active exploration through dissection has many proven benefits including improvement of anatomic knowledge. Decreased laboratory time may affect the quality of dissection and ultimately lower student performance in anatomy translating to lower knowledge acquisition. The aim of this study was to determine whether the quality of students' dissection in teams correlates with their performance in the gross anatomy course. Quality of dissections for each team enrolled in a gross anatomy course at Mayo Medical School was evaluated biweekly using a five-point rubric based on course learning objectives. Assessment of anatomic knowledge was based on sequential laboratory practice practical examination scores, achievements on daily audience response system (ARS) quizzes, and final practical, written, and National Board of Medical Examiners(®) (NBME(®) ) Gross Anatomy and Embryology Subject Examinations. Twelve teams comprising 48 students were included in the study. There was a positive correlation between dissection quality and practice practical examination score (R = 0.83) and a negative correlation between dissection quality and ARS quizzes (R = -0.985). Dissection teams with a passing score on their dissection evaluations (>70%) performed better on their final examinations. Based on an end of course survey, students agreed that dissection evaluations should continue to be a part of the course. This study showed that better quality of dissection was associated with higher scores on practice practical examinations, final practical, written, and NBME examinations. The study demonstrated a positive correlation between dissection evaluations, accompanied by formative feedback during the course, and higher scores on final course assessments.

Abstract:The relationship between a static measure of dorsal first ray mobility and dynamic motion of the first ray, midfoot, and hindfoot during the stance phase of walking was investigated in healthy, asymptomatic subjects who represented the spectrum of static flexibility. Static first ray mobility of 15 subjects was measured by a load cell device and ranged from stiff (3.1 mm) to lax (8.0 mm). Using three-dimensional motion analysis, mean first ray dorsiflexion/eversion and mid-/hindfoot eversion peak motion, time-to-peak, and eversion excursion were evaluated. Subjects with greater static dorsal mobility of the first ray demonstrated significantly greater time-to-peak hindfoot eversion and eversion excursion (p >.01), and midfoot peak eversion and eversion excursion (p > .01). No significant association was found between static first ray mobility and first ray motion during gait. This research provides evidence that the dynamic response of the foot may modulate the consequences of first ray mobility and that compensory strategies are most effective when static measures of dorsal mobility are most extreme.
Educator perspectives on non-technical, discipline-independent skill acquisition: An international, qualitative study

Abstract:Gross anatomy education utilizing body donors and human specimens assists the acquisition of non-traditional, discipline-independent skills (NTDIS) such as teamwork, communication, and leadership. Alterations to anatomy curricula, such as those resulting from the COVID-19 pandemic, likely impact NTDIS acquisition, yet how this manifests is unclear. This study, therefore, explored anatomy educator perspectives on NTDIS acquisition as a response to changes in teaching delivery. Gross anatomy educators across different countries were recruited and took part in one-on-one, semi-structured interviews that were audio recorded and transcribed. Data were analyzed using the framework method. Basic statistical analyses were performed on demographic and categorical data. Fifteen educators from five continents were interviewed (average length 32.5 min, range 17-51 min). Educator experience ranged from 0-4 years (n = 3) to 20+ years (n = 7). Most taught using dissection (n = 14) with prosection use (n = 13) also common. Themes relating to NTDIS included expected content (respect for donors, teamwork, communication skills, humanistic values), assessable content, assessment challenges, and impact of curriculum changes; NTDIS unique to anatomy education included cultural, ethical, and social considerations around dead bodies, including boundaries, and social norms. Informed by curriculum alterations during the COVID-19 pandemic, this first empirical study of anatomy educator perspectives on NTDIS highlights the potentially adverse educational impacts of decreased interaction with body donors and human specimens on NTDIS acquisition and difficulties with NTDIS assessment. Findings support gross anatomy education as unique in providing NTDIS that cannot easily be replicated elsewhere. Recommendations around NTDIS-specific educator competencies and promoting NTDIS are provided.
Perception and Attitude of First-Year Medical Students on Studying Human Anatomy Through Cadaver Dissection (Online Streaming) – A Survey Investigation

Abstract:In medical colleges, cadaveric dissection is an effective anatomy teaching method. Cadaveric dissections put students at the center of learning and show structures in their natural environment. However, most students dislike autopsy dissection since it's tedious and time-consuming. Thus, our study examined first-year medical students' attitudes toward dissection to learn anatomy. After the semester, students received a 3-domain questionnaire on preparedness, attitude, and restrictions. All information was gathered and recorded anonymously using Google forms. Each domain has many questions that add up to a score that shows how well they are prepared and how far online learning can go. One hundred MBBS first-year students participated in online anatomy lessons. After online courses, consenting students completed Google feedback forms regarding their experiences, which were examined and quantified. One hundred students completed the questionnaire and provided comments. Online courses were the most fantastic method to study human anatomy in medical school, according to 97.2%. Only 32.8% of students were uneasy, utilizing visuals to illustrate the softer aspects. Students' emotions and attitudes during corpse dissection varied by gender. Online was more appealing to males than women. Students prefer online courses over image-based ones because of the flexibility of time management and seating configuration. The statistical analysis revealed significant gender-related inequalities in student opinions. Other medical students showed similar variances at various phases of the research. The online anatomy classes for AVMC&H medical students were easy and enjoyable and utilized the "steeplechase" method. Our study shows the pros and cons of online education. Trainers/instructors should examine using online live forms as an instructional tool in anatomy training and generate new anatomy-related films for formal live teaching in the medical curriculum to accomplish this goal. However, additional study is needed to determine how much online education affects student learning and training.

Abstract:Practitioners and educators continually evaluate alternative teaching methodologies to increase the learning of anatomical and clinical based skills. Traditionally, anatomy and clinical skills are taught separately to students in both physical and occupational therapy curricula. Formaldehyde preservation is seen as the primary embalming methodology within anatomical education but has been described as lacking when utilized within educational institutions. This study aimed to evaluate the integration of clinical skills into anatomical education using an alternative preservation technique called Imperial College London‐ Soft Preservation (ICL‐SP). Physical and occupational therapy completing the Musculoskeletal Anatomy course were presented with donors preserved with either formaldehyde or ICP‐SP. The students were tasked with traditional dissection and with performing clinical tests on the different donors followed by the administration of a questionnaire. The inclusion of ICL‐SP donors showed there was a better model for the representation of the vascular system and the nervous system without showing significant deficits in any other categories when compared to formaldehyde. The integration of clinical skills and anatomical curriculum presented increased student perceived understanding of associated anatomy (p < 0.05), gave better understanding of how anatomy is important to their professions (p < 0.05) and increased motivation to learn anatomy (p < 0.05). Students noted ICL‐SP was more beneficial forclinical skill procedures (Lachman's test: p < 0.05; Valgus Stress Test of the Elbow: p < 0.05). In conclusion, the integration of clinical skills into anatomical education can potentially provide clinicians with higher confidence performing clinical skills and may be complemented by the utilization of the new ICL‐SP methodology. Abstract:Background: Cadavers are essential for anatomical education, yet their scarcity plagues medical colleges in Kerala and India. However, the Government Medical College in Thrissur has experienced a rise in annual body donations. Aims and Objectives: This study aims to explore the motivating factors behind this increase among the population of Thrissur. Materials and Methods: This study employed a cross-sectional survey design conducted at the Department of Anatomy, Government Medical College in Thrissur, Kerala. The study utilized data from the Body Donation Register, which covered a period from May 1st, 2011 to April 30th, 2012, encompassing a total of 223 individuals. During this specific period, which was selected due to the notable surge in body donation trends, there was a significant increase observed. The sample size was set at 110 participants. Data collection was conducted through face-to-face interviews with the voluntary body donors and was analyzed using the statistical package for the social sciences, version 16.0. Results: Gender distribution: Among 120 donors, 56.7% were male and 26.7% were female. Age groups 61–70 had the highest percentage (36%) of body donors. Socioeconomic status: the majority were above the poverty line (78.2%). Religious affiliation: Hindus had the largest representation (40 individuals). Marital status: Most donors were married (92 out of 110). Number of children: Most donors had two children (64 individuals). Sources of information: Family and relatives were the primary sources. Awareness of dissection: An equal number of donors were aware and unaware. Motivations for donation varied, including social service and avoiding burden after death. Conclusion: A good proportion of donors had a socioeconomic status above the poverty line, and most of them were graduates or postgraduates. The majority of body donors did not have a religious affiliation. However, they had a strong family background and received support from their families. Interestingly, most of the donors were unaware of how their bodies would be used after donation.
The Efficiency and Effectiveness of 3D Printing Technology in Teaching Medicine and Surgery in a School of Medicine in the Developing World

Abstract:Background: In the low and middle income countries’ healthcare system for medicine and surgery training and service provision, the use of computing technologies like 3D printing, would be of great help in creating faster, easier and transformational ways for training and doing surgical procedures, by creating software applications and hardware fabrications for efficient and effective learning solutions which are absent currently, hence leading to prompt treatment and surgical interventions in the developing world. Objective: The objective of this study was to examine the efficiency and effectiveness of the 3D printing technology in improving teaching and understanding of human anatomy and skills in the school of medicine in a developing country. Methodology: A randomized case-control study was used to analyze the impact of using 3D printed anatomical organ models as an adjunct to cadavers, in enhancing training of anatomy and skills development at Uzima University, School of medicine. Findings: There was substantial improvement amongst students taught with 3D printed organs together with cadavers in understanding the anatomy and skills taught as compared to those taught with cadavers alone. Students lectured with 3D printed brain and heart organ model took a median time of 2.2 hours IQR (1.6–2.8) for full identification of parts, while those taught with cadaver alone took a median time of 11.6 hours IQR (10.9-12.5), nearly 6 times more (p<0.001). In terms of narration of parts, functions and surgical procedures to treat ailments, those lectured with 3D printed brain and heart organ models took a median time of 6.4 hours IQR (5.6–7.2) for full narration, whereas those students lectured with cadaver alone took a median time of 17.5 hours IQR (18.8–18.8), p<0.001. Conclusion: We concluded that using anatomical models as an adjunct to cadavers improves training and skills of anatomy in medical schools in the developing world.
Anatomy education for medical students in the United Kingdom and Republic of Ireland in 2019: A 20‐year follow‐up

Abstract:Anatomical education in the United Kingdom (UK) and Ireland has long been under scrutiny, especially since the reforms triggered in 1993 by the General Medical Council's "Tomorrow's Doctors". The aim of the current study was to investigate the state of medical student anatomy education in the UK and Ireland in 2019. Thirty-nine medical schools completed the survey (100% response rate) and trained 10,093 medical students per year cohort. The teachers comprised 760 individuals, of these 143 were employed on full-time teaching contracts and 103 were employed on education and research contracts. Since a previous survey in 1999, the number of part-time staff has increased by 300%, including a significant increase in the number of anatomy demonstrators. In 2019, anatomy was predominantly taught to medical students in either a system-based or hybrid curriculum. Thirty-four medical schools (87%) used human cadavers to teach anatomy, with a total of 1,363 donors being used per annum. Gross anatomy teaching was integrated with medical imaging in 95% of medical schools, embryology in 81%, living anatomy in 78%, neuroanatomy in 73% and histology in 68.3%. Throughout their five years of study, medical students are allocated on average 85 hours of taught time for gross anatomy, 24 hours for neuroanatomy, 24 hours for histology, 11 hours for living anatomy and 10 for embryology. In the past twenty years there has been an average loss of 39 hours dedicated to gross anatomy teaching and a reduction in time dedicated to all other anatomy subdisciplines.

Anatomy Education in Nigeria: A Study of Program Curricula Toward Advancing Training and Improving Program Outcomes

Abstract:Background Anatomy education in this context refers to the training of anatomists particularly in the university or college setting with an emphasis on equipping them with skills to be biomedical researchers and scientists, educators, and providers of applied or allied health services. There has been a recurring call to carefully evaluate and scrutinize biomedical science programs in Nigerian universities. This study considered the anatomy curriculum in representative Nigerian institutions with an emphasis on their philosophy, program design, program objectives, and program contents among other considerations. Materials and methods Structured and validated questionnaires, electronic, were administered to collect quantitative and qualitative data from heads of the anatomy department in representative institutions. Head of anatomy departments in 11 representative institutions returned their properly completed questionnaires, representing over 60% return rate of the target representative institutions. Quantitative data sets were analyzed and presented as tables, charts, and figures. Qualitative data in the form of free responses were analyzed and presented based on themes. Results Degree programs, including bachelor's, master's, and doctorate degrees, are currently offered in respondents' universities. The curricula are generally robust in scope and depth of content as they address all the main domains of anatomy or anatomical sciences, especially gross anatomy, histology, embryology, neuroscience, and physical anthropology in many instances. The average duration for the bachelor's program (BSc) is 4 years, master's 2 years, and PhD (Doctor of Philosophy) 3-5 years. Analysis of the main methods of training indicated that the programs include significant coursework at every level as well as the main research project leading to the presentation of a dissertation or thesis. We also identified gaps in training, with emphasis on transferable skills, which must be addressed in line with modern realities in basic medical sciences. Conclusion We consider it a necessity to equip graduates at all levels of training with competencies that are directly and clearly aligned with the roles that graduates of the program should play in workplaces. We, therefore, recommend that curricula be reviewed to emphasize competencies in scientific investigations, transferable skills, and science education. Specific cutting-edge skills and research methods should be included in alignment with overall program objectives and deliverables.
Gross Anatomy Teaching for Medical Undergraduates Through Computer-Based Simulation: Introduction and Evaluation of Effectiveness

Abstract:Background Cadaveric teaching has been the gold standard for gross anatomy instruction through the ages and across the geographic spectrum, but with issues of availability faced in many medical schools, there is a need to look for other options. Digital tools like virtual dissectors that simulate the cadaver have been around for some years now, but their acceptability to the teachers and students and effectiveness need to be validated in the settings where applied. Aim To evaluate the acceptability, feasibility and effectiveness of using computer-based simulation tools for teaching gross anatomy via online mode to undergraduate medical students. Methodology A prospective crossover randomized controlled study was conducted online on 200 (120 males (60%) and 80 females (40%), Year 1 medical undergraduates (mean age males: 19.67 years and females: 19.52 years), wherein two broad topics of head and neck region were taught by didactic lectures delivered online via Zoom. Dissection videos were prepared for both cadaveric and computer-based simulation teaching. Groups were divided by random allocation and pre- and post-tests and feedback surveys were conducted online. Results A significant increase from pre- to post-test scores was found in both cadaveric and computer-based simulation techniques. However, more change was found in the computer technique as its t-value was more than the cadaveric technique. The feedback from the students was that the computer-based simulation teaching method gave them a good insight into 3D understanding of the human body, increased understanding of relations of body structures and capacity to grasp surface anatomy. Conclusion The study concluded that teaching gross anatomy through computer-based simulation techniques is acceptable to both the students and faculty. The study also concluded that it is an effective and feasible method that can be used to complement cadaveric teaching to revisit areas already dissected and for quick revision.

Abstract:Anatomy is a vital discipline in the realm of Medicine, and its primary means of study is through the use of cadavers. Experts in the medical, legal, and ethical domains have discussed the use of cadavers or their anatomical parts for educational purposes, which are considered a severe drawback. The advantages of using cadavers include their contribution to medical education, research, the investigation of innovative surgical procedures or techniques, the detection of anatomical differences at an individual or population level, the enhancement of surgical skills, and the support of other anatomical investigations. This review highlights the issues like consent, respect for the deceased and cultural beliefs on cadaver procurement practices and also it emphasizes the need for better body donation initiatives and public awareness campaigns to ensure sustainable cadaver procurement practices, ensuring consent, respect for the deceased and cultural beliefs.
