Abstract:The way in which we learn anatomy has changed exponentially over the decades and students now have access to lecture notes, textbooks, computer-assisted programmes, and a wide variety of internet based information. This study explored which resources were the most (and least) useful for a group of first year, undergraduate, medical students, with minimal prior content exposure (aged 18 and 19 years old, n = 76), over an 18 month period. Anatomy websites were found to be the most useful (30%), followed by tutorials (20%) and lectures (19%). A total of 13% found the university computer-assisted learning (CAL) platform least useful. We subsequently enhanced our ‘urogenital’ CAL anatomy module, with inclusion of new and updated images, videos and tutorials, as well as, digital and printed 3D-models. A post-intervention survey (n = 81) showed an increase from 12% to 27% for CAL as being most useful, and a decrease from 13% to 3% as being least useful. Our results provided a snapshot of students’ preferences in studying anatomy, and highlighted the importance of digital platforms and the need for evaluating our own learning resources. We must be mindful that there is an increasing tendency for students to rely on the Internet for information, which may expose them to unfiltered and unreliable content. We conclude that educators must be aware of the spectrum of learning resources used by students, to ensure that our own Institutional eLearning platforms are optimised to meet the diverse needs of learners.
Gross Anatomy Teaching for Medical Undergraduates Through Computer-Based Simulation: Introduction and Evaluation of Effectiveness

Abstract:Background Cadaveric teaching has been the gold standard for gross anatomy instruction through the ages and across the geographic spectrum, but with issues of availability faced in many medical schools, there is a need to look for other options. Digital tools like virtual dissectors that simulate the cadaver have been around for some years now, but their acceptability to the teachers and students and effectiveness need to be validated in the settings where applied. Aim To evaluate the acceptability, feasibility and effectiveness of using computer-based simulation tools for teaching gross anatomy via online mode to undergraduate medical students. Methodology A prospective crossover randomized controlled study was conducted online on 200 (120 males (60%) and 80 females (40%), Year 1 medical undergraduates (mean age males: 19.67 years and females: 19.52 years), wherein two broad topics of head and neck region were taught by didactic lectures delivered online via Zoom. Dissection videos were prepared for both cadaveric and computer-based simulation teaching. Groups were divided by random allocation and pre- and post-tests and feedback surveys were conducted online. Results A significant increase from pre- to post-test scores was found in both cadaveric and computer-based simulation techniques. However, more change was found in the computer technique as its t-value was more than the cadaveric technique. The feedback from the students was that the computer-based simulation teaching method gave them a good insight into 3D understanding of the human body, increased understanding of relations of body structures and capacity to grasp surface anatomy. Conclusion The study concluded that teaching gross anatomy through computer-based simulation techniques is acceptable to both the students and faculty. The study also concluded that it is an effective and feasible method that can be used to complement cadaveric teaching to revisit areas already dissected and for quick revision.
Perception and Attitude of First-Year Medical Students on Studying Human Anatomy Through Cadaver Dissection (Online Streaming) – A Survey Investigation

Abstract:In medical colleges, cadaveric dissection is an effective anatomy teaching method. Cadaveric dissections put students at the center of learning and show structures in their natural environment. However, most students dislike autopsy dissection since it's tedious and time-consuming. Thus, our study examined first-year medical students' attitudes toward dissection to learn anatomy. After the semester, students received a 3-domain questionnaire on preparedness, attitude, and restrictions. All information was gathered and recorded anonymously using Google forms. Each domain has many questions that add up to a score that shows how well they are prepared and how far online learning can go. One hundred MBBS first-year students participated in online anatomy lessons. After online courses, consenting students completed Google feedback forms regarding their experiences, which were examined and quantified. One hundred students completed the questionnaire and provided comments. Online courses were the most fantastic method to study human anatomy in medical school, according to 97.2%. Only 32.8% of students were uneasy, utilizing visuals to illustrate the softer aspects. Students' emotions and attitudes during corpse dissection varied by gender. Online was more appealing to males than women. Students prefer online courses over image-based ones because of the flexibility of time management and seating configuration. The statistical analysis revealed significant gender-related inequalities in student opinions. Other medical students showed similar variances at various phases of the research. The online anatomy classes for AVMC&H medical students were easy and enjoyable and utilized the "steeplechase" method. Our study shows the pros and cons of online education. Trainers/instructors should examine using online live forms as an instructional tool in anatomy training and generate new anatomy-related films for formal live teaching in the medical curriculum to accomplish this goal. However, additional study is needed to determine how much online education affects student learning and training.
Exploring the use of a digital anatomy learning platform in a second‐year medical student cohort

Abstract:Digital anatomy learning platforms hold potential academic benefits, yet there is currently no universally accepted pedagogical framework guiding their utilization. This study applied the lens of Laurillard's conversational framework to explore second‐year medical students' experiences with a digital anatomy learning platform at a South African university. An explanatory sequential mixed methods design was employed. Phase 1 used whole population (N = 280) sampling to survey students' usage of, and access to, the digital anatomy learning platform. The survey response rate was 29%, with 47% of respondents reporting usage of the platform. Internet and device limitations were minimal, with 74% and 87% respectively reporting no hindrance. While 39% found Primal Pictures easy to use and helpful to their learning, a disconnect emerged between perceived value and actual usage, with only 5% of participants exhibiting high usage. Phase 2 used purposive sampling (n = 13) based on students' usage of digital anatomy learning platforms. Two focus groups and two individual interviews explored students' use of the learning platform. Qualitative data were both deductively and inductively analyzed. Two themes were identified: types of learning and influencers of learning. Findings from the deductive analysis indicated that students engaged mainly in acquisition‐based learning. Inductive analysis showed students encountered various factors that influenced their learning behavior. Affective domain development emerged as a key factor in students' engagement with their anatomy studies and the digital learning platform, suggesting a potential gap in the conversational framework. Digital anatomy learning platforms may strengthen approaches to learning anatomy if implemented systematically, together with pre‐training.

Abstract:Abstract Several teaching resources are used to enhance the learning of anatomy. The purpose of this study was to examine the preference of medical students on the use of various resources to learn anatomy and their link to 12 learning outcomes. A selected response item questionnaire was administered that asked students to rank six laboratory teaching resources from most to least preferred, and rate how useful these six resources were towards achieving 12 learning outcomes. These learning outcomes covered many of the learning domains such as demonstrating an understanding of anatomy, visualizing structures, appreciating clinical correlations, and understanding anatomical variations. Medical students ranked cadaveric prosections paired with an active learning clinical tutorial as the highest rank and most useful resource for learning anatomy, followed by dissection videos, electronic resources, and printed material, followed by plastinated specimens and plastic models. Overall, cadaveric prosections were also rated as the most helpful teaching resource in achieving various learning outcomes. In conclusion, anatomy teachers should provide prosections coupled with clinical tutorials as well as electronic resources as students prefer these and think they help them learn anatomy. Future studies will investigate the impact of using these resources on students’ performance.

Abstract:This study examines the use of three computer programs designed for the study of gross anatomy; An@tomedia Online, AnatomyTV, and Thieme, as in-class learning support programs within the newly adopted “Block model” of teaching delivery at Victoria University. Victoria University is the first and only Australian university to have introduced a block model of education. With the introduction of ‘The Block Teaching Model’ the focus of the use of in-class time towards meaningful and active learning has become paramount. We used these programs as in-class student-centered inquiry based learning activity. The aim of this research was to investigate how the use of these programs impact on student engagement and student experience in their study of gross anatomy which is now offered in a time-compressed block teaching method. An opinion-based survey using the Qualtrics software was conducted at the end of each anatomy unit teaching block of semester 1 in 2019. The survey was distributed to all students enrolled in the unit. Results indicate that all programs used were viewed as making a positive contribution to student learning. The use of An@tomedia Online was particularly helpful in assisting first-year students studying gross anatomy with the interpretation of laboratory-based prosected cadaveric material within the new teaching context.

Effects of magnesium on isolated human fetal and maternal uteroplacental vessels.

Abstract:The effects of Mg2+ were studied in human umbilical arteries, stem villous arteries and maternal intramyometrial arteries. The vessels were dissected and mounted in organ baths, and isometric tension was recorded. In all fetal preparations investigated, Mg2+ (0.5-6.0 mM) in a concentration-related way decreased pD2 values for prostaglandin F2 alpha responses. The maximum response to prostaglandin F2 alpha was depressed in umbilical arteries, but remained unaffected in stem villous artery preparations. In stem villous arteries pretreated in Ca2(+)-free medium, increasing concentrations of Mg2+ markedly depressed the response to Ca2+ after stimulation with K+ or prostaglandin F2 alpha, suggesting that Mg2+ inhibited transmembrane calcium influx and interfered with intracellular calcium effects. In both stem villous and intramyometrial arteries, increasing concentrations of Mg2+ increased EC50 values for responses to K+, whereas Emax values were unaffected. Mg2+ produced relaxation of agonist-induced contractions by up to 60% in stem villous arteries and up to 40% in intramyometrial artery preparations. The relaxant effect of Mg2+ did not seem to be mediated through the endothelium or through changes in the synthesis of prostanoids, since endothelial disruption and treatment with indomethacin left the responses to Mg2+ unaffected. Relaxation of vessels important for resistance regulation in the human uteroplacental vascular bed may be of benefit when uteroplacental blood flow is impaired, and the present results support the established use of magnesium sulphate in the treatment of pre-eclampsia.
Anatomical theater or full digitization? Students' assessment and preferences in the field of anatomy teaching

Abstract:Background: For many years, teaching of anatomy has been based on traditional forms of teaching, but innovative solutions are currently being implemented on a large scale around the world. The COVID-19 pandemic and distance learning have influenced the development of new technologies in teaching. Materials and methods: The study was conducted among medical students who studied anatomy in the year preceding the analysis when the restrictions related to the pandemic had been lifted. The questionnaire contained 10 questions with YES/NO answers and a modified 10-point Likert scale. The data was subjected to statistical analysis performed in R studio using the R programming language. 650 respondents were included in the analysis. Results: Students assessed the modernization of anatomy departments to be unsatisfactory - on a 10-point scale, the most common answer was 2 - the average was 2.69. At the same time, they assessed the accessibility of knowledge as acceptable - median 6, with an average of 5.58. 75.38% of respondents did not use virtual reality technology, 75.69% did not use a 3D printing. 92.5% did not work with a virtual anatomical table. The vast majority of students claim that new technologies will be useful in their future clinical practice. Conclusions: New technologies are still rarely used in the teaching of anatomy, despite an increasing availability of such solutions and the conviction of students about the validity of implementing innovations in their future clinical practice. It seems reasonable to enable cooperation between the traditional forms of learning and the modern ones.
Undergraduate Medical Students' Usage and Perceptions of Anatomical Case-Based Learning: Comparison of Facilitated Small Group Discussions and eLearning Resources

Abstract:While case-based discussions can empower students to apply knowledge to contextual clinical situations, scheduling these activities is a challenge in crowded curricula. Case-based eLearning activities, derived from existing cases discussed within anatomy small group tutorials, were created incorporating principles such as interactivity, reinforcement, and feedback. Over half of the students accessed one or more of these online cases, with 18% accessing all eight online cases provided. Access increased as the semester progressed, particularly just before summative examinations, implying students used these primarily as revision aides. Students rated both formats highly, but favored the online format with regard to enjoyment (P = 0.048), learning (P = 0.101), and feedback (P = 0.086). However, more students discussed these cases in small group tutorials within the anatomy dissecting room than completed them online (122 vs. 67) and themes emerging from free text comments included a desire to have more time dedicated to these cases during small group tutorials, and an appreciation for the opportunity for discussion with staff and learning through doing. Additionally, native English speakers rated the anatomy room discussions significantly higher in all aspects than non-native English speakers, suggesting that non-native speakers may be hesitant or reluctant to fully participate in front of peers. While online case-based learning activities are a useful adjunct to anatomy teaching, particularly for revision, assumptions that "digital natives" have an innate preference for digital resources require critical evaluation, as students still place a high value on opportunities for discussion with staff during their studies.
Curricular and pedagogical aspects of gross anatomy education for undergraduate physiotherapy students: a scoping review

Abstract:Objective: The objective of this review was to collate and map gross anatomy curricular and pedagogical approaches for physiotherapy students. Introduction: Knowledge of anatomy is essential for physiotherapy clinical diagnosis, treatment effectiveness and safe practice. The information on this topic is sparse, and what does exist is diverse. This scoping review describes anatomy educational approaches for physiotherapy students and provides needed insight into this topic. Inclusion criteria: No limits were applied on the date of the database search or age of participants. Languages were limited to English, French, German and Spanish. Studies had to include information on gross anatomy curricula or pedagogy for physiotherapy students, or information from qualified physiotherapists or those teaching gross anatomy to physiotherapy students. Methods: Included studies were mainly sourced from EBSCOhost (CINAHL, ERIC and MEDLINE), PubMed and Scopus databases. Perusal of reference lists facilitated further retrievals. Studies published from inception up to 21 July 2019 were included. Studies were identified and screened, and the process was reported in a PRISMA flow diagram. JBI methodology for scoping reviews was followed. Selected studies were charted according to a template created and published in a JBI scoping review protocol. Results: Fifty-four studies satisfied the inclusion criteria. Various studies gave calculable length of intervention in weeks (n=14, 26%), hours (n = 7, 13%) or both (n = 21, 39%). The majority of studies (n = 50, 93%) were cross-sectional studies; three were randomized controlled trials (6%). Mean sample sizes varied from 55.3 ± 30.4 (professional behaviors, ethical and humanistic aspects) to 323.2 ± 219.7 participants (multi-modal and blended learning). Overall, 29 studies (54%) included physiotherapy students or personnel in physiotherapy anatomy programs exclusively in the sample. Other disciplines with physiotherapy students included medical students (n = 12, 22%), and occupational therapy students (n = 10, 19%). The interprofessional education category (n = 8) determined that interdisciplinary teamwork led to increased anatomical learning and awareness of future clinical roles. Computer-assisted learning (n = 9) was effective as a stand-alone or adjunct pedagogy, useful for self-study and helped anatomical knowledge retention. Team-based learning (n = 2), peer teaching (n = 6) and clinical input incorporating case-based learning and horizontal and vertical integration (n = 4) resulted in anatomical knowledge retention and were associated with mastery of anatomical understanding, an increase in examination confidence and higher examination grades. Contradictory learning outcomes resulted from the use of online videos in blended and multi-model learning studies (n = 7). Increased student participation in asynchronous online discussion forums benefitted academic learning outcomes. The category of curriculum, pedagogy and materials (n = 15) identified and compared different survey results pertaining to the curricular aspect of the objectives of this review. One study investigated the flipped classroom concept. The use of anatomy content to encourage professional, ethical and humanistic aspects (n = 3) of physiotherapy students' behavior resulted in positive outcomes. Conclusions: This scoping review revealed a multi-faceted topic with many types of interventions and outcomes recorded. It identified variations in pedagogies, curricular content and learning approaches integral to the subject and their impact on gross anatomy education for this population. Beneficial behavioral, anatomical learning, knowledge retention and academic outcomes were identified.
Human Anatomy Education: Knowledge, Attitude, Perception and Challenges Encountered by Medical and Nursing Students in Two Gambian Universities

Abstract:Human Anatomy (HA) is one of the basic science courses in every medical school, and an excellent knowledge and understanding of HA is essential for medical and nursing students. Aim of this research was to evaluate the knowledge, attitude, perception, and challenges in learning Human Anatomy amongst Medical and Nursing students in two Gambian universities. This study was conducted amongst Medical and Nursing students of American International University West Africa (AIUWA) and University of The Gambia (UTG). Both universities are located in The Gambia. 290 randomly selected students consented to this study. Data was obtained by administering a structured questionnaire on students’ knowledge, attitude, perception, and challenges in learning Human Anatomy. Data analysis and comparisons were done with independent samples T-test using IBM, SPSS version 23.0. Level of significance was set at p 0.05) knowledge of HA than nursing students, and AIUWA students had better knowledge of HA than UTG students (p>0.05). Nursing students had a better attitude toward learning HA than medical students (p>0.05), same as AIUWA students over UTG students (p>0.05). UTG nursing students had the best perception towards learning HA, which was significantly high compared to AIUWA nursing students (p=0.0029). The medical and nursing students in both universities faced similar challenges with UTG medical students mostly affected. Knowledge of Human Anatomy is essential in all medical fields and adequate measures must be put in place to make the learning of this course less tedious for students.
Development of a Novel Peer-sharing Application to Supplement Learning from Cadaveric Dissection

Abstract:Gross anatomy dissection in contemporary medical education must balance the traditional value of learning from the cadaver with the possibilities created by the use of digital tools as supplemental resources that personalize and deepen the student learning experience. This study broadly examined the design, implementation, and use of AnatomyShare, a novel iPad application employing learner-generated content that allows students to securely share annotated images of their dissections with each other and take faculty-generated image-based quizzes during their first-year medical school gross anatomy course. Almost all students enrolled in the course used the application (N = 176; 91% use based on analytics). Seventy-five students responded to a survey asking how and when they used the application, along with their perceptions of its usefulness and contribution to learning. More students reported using the application outside of laboratory (97.3%) than during laboratory (85.3%), despite only in-laboratory use being required. Taking quizzes using the "Exam" feature was the highest rated use of AnatomyShare, and students cited that the application exposed them to anatomical variation and motivated them to correctly identify structures during dissection. While steps need to be taken to combat low-quality learner-generated content and to enhance meaningful student interaction and collaboration, AnatomyShare was a feasible and highly rated supplement to dissection that provided valuable assessment opportunities for students. Future research will examine the impact of use on course grades and engagement in gross anatomy dissection.
Junior and senior students possess differential preferences towards multimodal digital anatomy resources

Abstract:Digital technologies are changing how anatomy is taught tremendously. However, little is known about the effective integration of multimodal digital resources when concurrently provided in an anatomy course. To address this question, an array of digital anatomy resources including Augmented Reality (AR) and Virtual Reality (VR) anatomy resources were concurrently trialed by a total of 326 undergraduate and postgraduate students across three undergraduate (systemic anatomy, neuroanatomy, and regional anatomy) and one postgraduate anatomy (applied musculoskeletal anatomy) curricula in 2022. A five‐point Likert scale learning and teaching survey was conducted to evaluate students' experiences, preferences, and perceptions. Most undergraduate (81% systemic anatomy, 76% neuroanatomy, and 87% regional anatomy) and postgraduate (97%) participants across the four cohorts felt confident in studying anatomy using digital resources and the majority (>80% undergraduate and >90% postgraduate) found the multimodal digital anatomy resources interactive and stimulating. The response showed that undergraduate (77% systemic anatomy, 81% neuroanatomy, and 97% regional anatomy) and postgraduate students (92%) consistently enjoyed their experience of using multimodal digital anatomy resources and thought that these resources enhanced their interest in studying anatomy. However, there are significant differences in ratings of specific digital resources among the junior (first‐year undergraduates) and senior (third‐year undergraduates and postgraduates) students. The virtual dissection table was uniformly preferred by the four cohorts of students across the board. Interestingly, however, VR anatomy and radiographic‐based digital anatomy resources received diverse ratings. VR anatomy was valued most by junior undergraduate students (84%) who studied systemic anatomy compared to their senior counterparts (73%) who studied regional anatomy, whereas radiographic‐based digital anatomy resources were more valued by the postgraduate students (93%) compared to undergraduates (65% systemic anatomy, 73% neuroanatomy, and 48% regional anatomy). This study identifies that while students uniformly appreciate the value of multimodal digital anatomy teaching, there is a clear difference in their perceptions towards individual resources, likely in a course‐specific manner. We conclude that the selection and adoption of digital anatomy tools must be tailored as part of course design and that digital anatomy tools should be used in combination to provide an effective learning experience for students.

Novel and Innovative Approaches to Teaching Human Anatomy Classes in an Online Environment During a Pandemic

Abstract:In view of the current situation with a worldwide pandemic, the use of online teaching has become critical. This is difficult in the context of human anatomy, a subject contingent primarily on the use of human cadaveric tissues for learning through face-to-face practical laboratory sessions. Although anatomy has been taught using online resources including 3D models and anatomy applications, feedback from students and academic staff does not support the replacement of face-to-face teaching. At Charles Sturt University, we were obligated to cancel all classes on-campus in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. We ran exclusive online anatomy practical classes replacing classes usually run on campus. We designed an alternative program that consisted of twenty pre-recorded videos that were prepared in the anatomy laboratory using cadaveric tissues, and then discussed in live (and interactive) tutorials. Furthermore, innovative approaches to learning were shown and encouraged by the lecturer. Student survey responses indicated a positive response to both the anatomical videos and the innovative learning approaches. The results obtained by students showed a statistically significant increase in high distinctions and marked decrease in the amount of fail grades, compared with the previous three years (not online). The use of these videos and the encouragement of innovative learning approaches was a novel experience that will add valuable experiences for improved practice in online anatomy teaching. We propose that online anatomy videos of cadavers combined with innovative approaches are an efficient and engaging approach to replace face-to-face anatomy teaching under the current contexts.

Abstract:Purpose: With limited means, resource-deprived countries must find ways to organize education to meet standards. Few reports exist about anatomical education in LLMICs. This study explores how anatomy teaching is sustained in countries with few resources and which affordable educational strategies are applied to uphold quality. Methods: A mixed-methods study with anatomy teachers from public medical schools in low or lower-middle income countries (LLMICs) in Africa, Asia, Europe, and Latin-American was performed through survey via email combined with semi-structured online interview with teachers, exploring survey results at a deeper level. Results: LLMICs available to be surveyed, 13 and 8 were found to respond to a written survey and oral interview invitation, face significant teaching challenges, primarily due to lack of funds. These are faculty shortages (low salaries and high student-to-teacher ratio) and inadequate infrastructure (internet, electricity, poor classroom conditions). Solutions were associated with didactic strategies (social media, e-learning, image-based learning, applied anatomy), expanding teaching capacity with less qualified and part-time faculty, student-organized education, and self-financing (teaching resources subsidized by teachers and students). Which was triking was teacher commitment despite difficult circumstances. Teachers propose better faculty management, increased anatomy staff recruitment, and collaboration with other institutions. Conclusions: Anatomical education in LLMIC is forced to adapt to the socio-economic context, rather than to trends in medical education worldwide. These adaptations are supported mainly by the teachers 'commitment.'

Abstract:Although traditional human body dissection has been the mainstay method for gross anatomy pedagogy, the popularity of virtual teaching methods has increased in recent years. The Anatomage table offers a life-size digital representation of the human body and allows visualization, manipulation, and virtual dissection. This study investigated the perception of medical students towards virtual dissection vis-à-vis traditional dissection in anatomy pedagogy.

Abstract:The Covid‐19 pandemic has driven the fastest changes to higher education across the globe, necessitated by social distancing measures preventing any face to face teaching. This has led to an almost immediate switch to distance learning by higher education institutions. Anatomy faces some unique challenges. Intrinsically, anatomy is a three‐dimensional subject that requires a sound understanding of the relationships between structures, often achieved by the study of human cadaveric material, models and virtual resources. This study sought to identify the approaches taken in the United Kingdom and Republic of Ireland to deliver anatomical education through online means. Data were collected from 14 different universities in the United Kingdom and Republic of Ireland and compared adopting a thematic analysis approach. Once themes were generated, they were collectively brought together using a strength, weakness, opportunity, threat (SWOT) analysis. Key themes included the opportunity to develop new online resources and the chance to engage in new academic collaborations. Academics frequently mentioned the challenge that time constrains could place on the quality and effectiveness of these resources; especially as in many cases the aim of these resources is to compensate for a lack of exposure to cadaveric exposure. Comparisons of the actions taken by multiple higher education institutions reveals the ways that academics have tried to balance this demand. Discussions will facilitate decisions being made by higher education institutions regarding adapting the curriculum and assessment methods in anatomy.

Leveraging technology to improve access to medical education in anatomy and physiology in resource-limited settings: A mixed methods study

Abstract:This study assesses the acceptability, appropriateness, feasibility, and efficacy of a novel asynchronous video-based intervention for teaching respiratory physiology and anatomy to medical students in resource-limited settings. A series of short video lectures on pleural anatomy, pulmonary physiology, and pathophysiology was created using Lightboard and screen capture technology. These were uploaded to YouTube and Google Drive and made available to 1st-3rd year medical students at two Latin American universities for 1 week. Employing a parallel-convergent mixed methods design, we conducted surveys, focus groups, interviews, and pre/post testing for qualitative and quantitative data. Thematic Analysis was used to analyze qualitative data and McNemar's test for quantitative analysis. Seventy-six students participated. The videos' short format, interactivity, and Lightboard style were highly valued for their flexibility, time efficiency, and educational impact. Students recognized their clinical relevance and trusted their content, suggesting potential applicability in similar settings. Despite infrastructure and connectivity challenges, the use of flexible streaming and downloadable options facilitated learning. Survey results indicated high levels of feasibility (99%), appropriateness (95%), and acceptability (95%), with significant knowledge gains observed (37% correct pre-test answers vs. 56% post-test, p < 0.0001). Our findings demonstrate high acceptability, appropriateness, feasibility, and efficacy of a targeted asynchronous education centered on short-format videos in resource-limited settings, enabling robust learning despite local barriers. Flexible access is key for overcoming localized barriers. Taking an adaptive, learner-centered approach to content creation and delivery to address constraints was pivotal to success. Our modular videos could serve as versatile models for flexible education in resource-constrained settings.
A Large-Scale Feasibility Study of Screen-based 3D Visualization and Augmented Reality Tools for Human Anatomy Education: Exploring Gender Perspectives in Learning Experience

Abstract:Anatomy education is an indispensable part of medical training, but traditional methods face challenges like limited resources for dissection in large classes and difficulties understanding 2D anatomy in textbooks. Advanced technologies, such as 3D visualization and augmented reality (AR), are transforming anatomy learning. This paper presents two in-house solutions that use handheld tablets or screen-based AR to visualize 3D anatomy models with informative labels and in-situ visualizations of the muscle anatomy. To assess these tools, a user study of muscle anatomy education involved 236 premedical students in dyadic teams, with results showing that the tablet-based 3D visualization and screen-based AR tools led to significantly higher learning experience scores than traditional textbook. While knowledge retention didn't differ significantly, ethnographic and gender analysis showed that male students generally reported more positive learning experiences than female students. This study discusses the implications for anatomy and medical education, highlighting the potential of these innovative learning tools considering gender and team dynamics in body painting anatomy learning interventions.
