Abstract:The plateau-type sodium titanate with suitable sodiation potential is a promising anode candidate for high safe and high energy density of sodium-ion batteries (SIBs). However, the poor initial Coulombic efficiency (ICE) and cyclic instability of sodium titanate are attributed to the unstable interfacial structure along with the decomposition of electrolytes, resulting in the continuous formation of solid electrolyte interface (SEI) film. To address this issue, a chemical grafting method is developed to fabricate a highly stable interface layer of inert Al2O3 on the sodium titanate anode, rendering the high ICE and excellent cycling stability. Based on theoretical calculations, NaPF6 are more likely adsorption on the Al2O3 surface and produce sodium fluoride. The formation of a thin and dense SEI film with rich sodium fluoride achieves the low interfacial resistances and charge-transfer resistances. Benefitting from our design, the obtained sodium titanate exhibits a high ICE from 67.7 % to 79.4 % and an enhanced reversible capacity from 151 mAh g-1 to 181 mAh g-1 at 20 mA g-1, along with an increase in capacity retention from 56.5 % to 80.6 % after 500 cycles. This work heralds a promising paradigm for rational regulation of interfacial stability to achieve high-performance anodes for SIBs. Abstract:Layered structure Na2Ti3O7 with a suitable sodiation plateau potential (similar to 0.3 V vs Na+/Na) is a promising anode for highly safe sodium-ion batteries (SIBs). However, the practical use of Na2Ti3O7 is hindered by the unstable interface that forms between the anode and electrolyte leading to issues such as low initial coulombic efficiency (ICE) and cycling instability. Herein, we introduce tetraethyl orthosilicate (TEOS) as an electrolyte additive that can spontaneously and effectively react with the main component of the detrimental surface corrosion layer (sodium hydroxide, etc.) to form a protective film on the Na2Ti3O7 anode. The Na2Ti3O7 anode exhibits an enhanced capacity from 134.8 to 167.1 mAh g(-1) at 0.1 A g(-1), along with an increase in capacity retention from 56.1 to 83.9% after 250 cycles at 0.2 A g(-1). This work provides a straightforward protection strategy to address the unstable interface issues, rendering sodium titanate as a promising anode material to achieve practical application in the future.
Confined Seeds Derived Sodium Titanate/graphene Composite with Synergistic Storage Ability Toward High Performance Sodium Ion Capacitors

Abstract:Sodium ion capacitors (SICs) are increasingly being focused, due to the feature of high energy/power densities derived from the integrated energy storage mechanisms, as well as the ubiquitous sodium sources. Practical anodes with exceptional rate capability can circumvent the kinetic mismatch with cathode, boosting energy/power metrics. Herein, a Na2Ti7O15 nanowire/graphene anode is synthesized through an atomic layer deposition (ALD) seeding technique, by which the confined seeds enable Na2Ti7O15 with ultra-high aspect ratio and interweaved structure with graphene nanosheets. The composite delivers a superior rate capability of 60 mAh g(-1) at a high rate of 17.7 A g(-1), and an exceptional cyclic stability of 90% retention after 10 000 cycles even at 8.85 A g(-1). It is demonstrated that the morphology, graphene platform, intrinsically low energy diffusion barrier of Na2Ti7O15, and associated reaction mechanism synergize the electron transport, sodium ion migration, and surface capacitive contribution, giving rise to such a decent electrochemical performance. The SICs deliver high energy/power densities (82.7 Wh kg(-1)/97.5 W kg(-1), 25 kW kg(-1) with 16 Wh kg(-1) retained), proving a promise particularly at extremely fast charge/discharge condition. The proposed ALD seeding technique can be developed into a technical strategy for synthesizing high performance energy storage materials.
S/N Co-Doped Ultrathin TiO2 Nanoplates as an Anode Material for Advanced Sodium-Ion Hybrid Capacitors

Abstract:Anatase titanium dioxide (TiO2) has emerged as a potential anode material for sodium-ion hybrid capacitors (SICs) in terms of its nontoxicity, high structure stability and cost-effectiveness. However, its inherent poor electrical conductivity and limited reversible capacity greatly hinder its practical application. Here, ultrathin TiO2 nanoplates were synthesized utilizing a hydrothermal technique. The electrochemical kinetics and reversible capacity were significantly improved through sulfur and nitrogen co-doping combined with carbon coating (SN-TiO2/C). Sulfur and nitrogen co-doping generated oxygen vacancies and introduced additional active sites within TiO2, facilitating accelerated Na-ion diffusion and enhancing its reversible capacity. Furthermore, carbon coating provided stable support for electron transfer in SN-TiO2/C during repeated cycling. This synergistic strategy of sulfur and nitrogen co-doping with carbon coating for TiO2 led to a remarkable capacity of 335.3 mAh g-1 at 0.1 A g-1, exceptional rate property of 148.3 mAh g-1 at 15 A g-1 and a robust cycling capacity. Thus, the SN-TiO2/C//AC SIC delivered an impressive energy density of 177.9 W h kg-1. This work proposes an idea for the enhancement of reaction kinetics for energy storage materials through a synergistic strategy.

Abstract:Bi-based materials can retain massive sodium-ion through alloying and conversion reactions, resulting in excellent theoretical capacity. However, during the sodiation/ desodiation process, there is always a significant volume change in the alloy reaction. In this paper, TiO2-coated hexagonal-phase topological insulators (TIs) Bi2Te3 composites grown on carbon cloth (CC) are prepared by a solvothermal reaction and atomic layer deposition process (TiO2/Bi2Te3/CC), as an anode material for sodium-ion batteries without the need for a binder. Compared to the pure Bi2Te3 electrode, the optimized TiO2/Bi2Te3/CC composite exhibits a superior specific capacity (450 mAh g-1), high rate performance (0.1 A g-1), and great cycling stability (100 cycles) since the inherent properties of TIs, owing to the effective TiO2 cladding layer and large interface spacing of Bi2Te3. The enhanced reversible capacitance, rate capability, and cycling performances can be attributed to the heterointerfaces and excellent mechanical properties of TiO2, which balance the electronic structure of the building blocks and inhibit the detaching of Bi2Te3 due to large internal stresses. The amorphous TiO2/Bi2Te3/CC was treated in a tubular furnace to obtain crystalline TiO2/Bi2Te3/CC, and the electrochemical performance of the heterostructures formed by the TiO2 coating layer with different properties was compared. This work demonstrates the enormous potential for enhancing the sodium-ion storage capabilities of alloy electrode materials by constructing heterostructures.

Abstract:The rate-determining process for sodium storage in TiO2 is greatly depending on charge transfer happening in the electrode materials owing to its inferior diffusion coefficient and electronic conductivity. Apart from reducing the diffusion distance of ion/electron, the increasement of ionic/electronic mobility in the crystal lattice is also very important for charge transport. Here, an oxygen vacancy (OV) engineering assisted in high-content anion (S/Se/P) doping strategy to enhance charge transfer kinetics for ultrafast sodium-storage performance is proposed. Theoretical calculations indicate that OV-engineering evokes spontaneous S doping into the TiO2 phase and achieves high dopant concentration to bring about impurity state electron donor and electronic delocalization over S occupied sites, which can largely reduce the migration barrier of Na+. To realize the speculation, high-content anion doped anatase TiO2/C composites (9.82 at% for S in A-TiO2–x-S/C) are elaborately designed. The optimized A-TiO2–x-S/C anode exhibits extraordinarily high-rate capability with 209.6 mAh g–1 at 5000 mA g–1. The assembled sodium ion capacitors deliver an ultrahigh energy density of 150.1 Wh kg–1 at a power density of 150 W kg–1 when applied as anode materials. This work provides a new strategy to realize high content anion doping concentration, and enhance the charge transfer kinetics for TiO2, which delivers an efficient approach for the design of electrode materials with fast kinetic.

Abstract:Na 2 Ti 3 O 7 (NTO) anode has been long-term plagued by the rapid capacity decay due to the irreversible structural evolution and interfacial side reaction at low sodium insertion potential. Most reported investigations about NTO anode mainly focus on designing nanostructure to shorten ion diffusion and increase the electrochemical activity. However, few attentions have been paid to promote the cycle stability of bulk NTO. Surface/interface engineering through the incorporation of well-designed coating layer has been verified an effective strategy to stabilize the structure and interface of the electrodes. Herein, a polyimide-engineered bulk Na 2 Ti 3 O 7 () is proposed to promote its structure and interface stability upon cycles. The continuous PI layer with intrinsic flexibility as a protection skin can suppress the self-relaxation of discharged product and promote the structural stability during cycles. Meanwhile, PI protective layer with superior chemical stability not only hinders the side reaction occurred at NTO/electrolyte interface, but also serves as a barrier layer to preclude the erosion of H 2 O when exposed to air. Moreover, the PI layer with intrinsic ionic conductivity is capable of boosting Na-ion transportation from electrolyte into the NTO lattice as well. This work stresses a rational strategy for the surface/interface regulation of long-lasting and practical Ti-based anodes.

Abstract:NaTi2(PO4)(3) with open and stable frameworks shows great potential for sodium ion batteries (SIBs), while it is suffering from the intrinsic low electronic conductivity, causing poor active material utilization and inferior rate capability. Herein, a facile solvothermal reaction with size controlling and in-situ carbon coating process is developed to synthesize NaTi2(PO4)(3)/C nanocomposites, in which the well-dispersed NaTi2(PO4)(3) nanoparticles with size of 20-40 nm are well coated by carbon shell with uniform thickness of similar to 4 nm. The uniform carbon coating layer and small nanoparticles enable the high utilization ratio of carbon and active material, thus nanostructured NaTi2(PO4)(3)/C with 3.82% carbon content can deliver outstanding sodium ion storage properties in multiple occasions including organic/aqueous electrolyte and half/full cell. In organic electrolyte system, the electrode presents remarkable rate capability with reversible capacity of 92 and 66 mAh g(-1) at 20 C and 50C (1C = 150 mA g(-1)), respectively. Moreover, a NaTi2(PO4)(3)/C//Na3V2(PO4)(2)F-3 sodium ion full cell with excellent rate capability up to 20C and cycling stability is also demonstrated. In aqueous electrolyte, after the optimization of current collector and electrolyte, the aqueous HaTi(2)(PO4)(3)/C/Isodium Prussian blue (PB) full cell also demonstrates excellent cycling life up to 500 times with a capacity retention of 86.5% at 1C. Abstract:NaTi 2 (PO 4 ) 3 , as one of sodium superionic conductor (NASICON)-type anode materials, has been extensively concerned by researchers in Na-storage technologies due to their unique three-dimensional structure for Na + insertion/deinsertion. However, the low conductivity of NaTi 2 (PO 4 ) 3 seriously hinders its electrochemical kinetics, which has been a major obstacle to further application. Herein, a facile strategy is proposed to synthesize carbon-incorporated NaTi 2 (PO 4 ) 3 nanoparticles on carbon cloth (NTP/C@CC) as a binder-free anode for aqueous sodium-ion hybrid capacitors (SIHCs). The amorphous carbon as a continuous conductive network can improve the electronic conductivity and restrict the particle growth of NaTi 2 (PO 4 ) 3 . The small-sized NaTi 2 (PO 4 ) 3 nanoparticles embedded in the carbon network could increase the electrolyte/electrode interfacial area and shorten the Na + transport path, resulting in increased electrochemical performance. Meanwhile, the carbon matrix can buffer the volume expansion during cycling and stabilize the structure of active materials. Consequently, the NTP/C@CC anode possesses a high specific capacity (0.416 mAh cm − 2 at 2 mA cm − 2 ), considerable rate capability (0.172 mAh cm − 2 at 30 mA cm − 2 , 41.3% capacitance retention), and good long-term stability (83.2% capacitance retention after 5000 cycles at 30 mA cm − 2 ). In addition, an assembled SIHC device with P-doped porous carbon cloth (PPCC) as the cathode shows a capacity of 0.205 mAh cm − 2 . The SIHC cell also acquires a superior energy density of 2.82 mWh cm − 3 and 81.5% capacity retention over 5000 cycles. This work may offer a viable way for constructing binder-free electrode materials for hybrid capacitors.

Mn3O4 Nanoparticles in Situ Embedded in TiO2 for High-Performance Na-ion Capacitor: Balance Between 3D Ordered Hierarchically Porous Structure and Heterostructured Interfaces

Abstract:Sodium-ion hybrid capacitors (SICs) are recognized as a promising new energy storage devices. The design of anodes with high rates to balance the fast desorption/adsorption process in cathode is a key way to construct desirable SICs. Herein, Mn3O4 nanoparticles are in situ embedded in TiO2 to form Mn3O4@TiO2 nanocomposite as anode for SICs. The prepared Mn3O4@TiO2 nanocomposite shows hierarchically porous structure with macropores and mesopores. The Mn3O4 content in the composites can be adjusted to achieve the balance between the hierarchically porous structure and heterostructured Mn3O4/TiO2 interfaces. The optimized Mn3O4@TiO2 with -30 wt% Mn3O4 achieves this balance, delivering a large discharge capacity of 247.8 mAh g-1 at 1 A g-1 after 1000 cycles in SIBs. The assembled SICs by using Mn3O4@TiO2-2 as anode and commercial activated carbon as cathode can achieve a high energy and power densities of 106.5 Wh kg- 1 and 10140.5 W kg- 1, respectively, and an extended cycle life of 92.8 % retention after 5000 cycles. The good Na-ion storage performance mainly arises from the macropores that can provide rapid mass transfer channels, the mesopores that can offer high specific surface areas and highly dispersed Mn3O4 nanoparticles and abundant Mn3O4/TiO2 interfaces that can afford a lot of active sites.

Abstract:Na2Ti3O7 is a promising intercalation anode material for sodium ion batteries. However, low electronic conductivity and structural instability restrict its practical applications. Herein, a novel carbon coated sodium-titanate nanotube was successfully synthesized via a facile solvothermal method. The carbon combines all individual Na2Ti3O7 nanotubes into a stable union, which is characterized and confirmed by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The carbon encapsulation together with the unique nanotube structure of the Na2Ti3O7 endows the favorable high conductivity and improves the structural stability during cycling. Therefore, Na2Ti3O7@C electrode shows a much higher specific capacity and good cycling stability (142.2 mAh g(-1) at 311 mA g(-1) after 100 cycles), whereas the bare Na2Ti3O7 only shows a capacity of 84.9 mAh g(-1) at 311 mA g(-1) after 100 cycles. Furthermore, Na2Ti3O7@C composite electrode has relatively stable capacities at high rate current (84 mAh g(-1) at 3.11 A g(-1)). Nanointerface-driven pseudocapacitance tuning of TiO2 nanosheet anodes for high-rate, ultralong-life and enhanced capacity sodium-ion batteries

Abstract:Titanium dioxide recently gained attention as sodium-ion battery anode material. However, its practical application is hindered by low specific capacity (~150 mAh/g), and mediocre cycling stability. Here we report for the first time, nanointerface-driven Na-ion intercalation pseudocapacitance tuning as a strategy to substantially improve the performance of TiO2 anodes. This is achieved by tuning the crystal mismatch between anatase and bronze crystallites of hierarchical TiO2 nanosheets. Hybrid TiO2 nanosheets composed of ~10 nm sized anatase (~85%) and bronze (~15%) crystallites exhibited significantly higher pseudocapacitive Na-ion storage compared to phase-pure bronze and anatase TiO2 nanosheets. High specific capacity of 290 mAh/g (~0.87 mol Na-ions) at a current density of 25 mA/g is obtained for this composition. Hybrid TiO2 maintained a specific capacity of 120 mAh/g even at a high current density of 1 A/g. Coulombic efficiency (~100%) and cycling stability are outstanding, retaining 90% of the initial capacity after 2500 galvanostatic cycles. These electrochemical performances are noticeably superior to amorphous and crystalline TiO2 reported earlier. Mechanistic studies proved Na-ion intercalation pseudocapacitance without considerable structural changes. Excellent electrochemical performance of dual-phase hierarchical TiO2 nanosheets is credited to the superior Na-ion intercalation pseudocapacitance resulting from anatase-bronze nanointerfaces. The demonstrated strategy of nanointerface-driven pseudocapacitance tuning provides new opportunities for the designing of advanced Na-ion battery anodes.
Ultrasmall TiO 2 /C nanoparticles with oxygen vacancy-enriched as an anode material for advanced Li-ion hybrid capacitors

Abstract:As a battery-type anode material for Li-ion hybrid capacitors (LICs), TiO 2 reveals modest structural alterations and pseudocapacitive behavior during Li-ion storage procedure. However, it presents a significant mismatch in the dynamic response between TiO 2 anode and the capacitive anode due to the low electrical conductivity and sluggish Li-ion diffusion on LICs. Morphology design and defect engineering have a crucial impact in increasing the kinetic reaction of TiO 2 . In this work, the ultrasmall and oxygen vacancies (OVs) enriched TiO 2 /C nanoparticles (TiO 2-x /C) are manufactured by a simple sol-gel method combined sodium borohydride (NaBH 4 ), which introduces OVs and Ti 3+ ions in TiO 2 and effectively prevents the agglomeration of TiO 2-x /C nanoparticles. As an anode material, TiO 2-x /C presents excellent rate performance (124 mA h g −1 , 2 A g −1 ) and cycle stability (capacity retention of 93 % after 1000 cycles at 1 A g −1 ). Kinetic analysis shows that the capacitive contribution ratio is 75 % at a sweep rate of 1.0 mV s −1 . LICs combined by TiO 2-x /C anode and active carbon (AC) cathode have remarkable energy density (77.6 Wh kg −1 ) and power density (250 W kg −1 ). This work demonstrates that NaBH 4 has a dual effect on the morphology optimization and OVs regulation of sol-gel prepared TiO 2 /C nanospheres, and the resulting ultrasmall TiO 2-x /C nanoparticles have great potential applications in LICs.

In-Situ growing tungsten Sulfide/Carbon nanosheets on sodium titanate nanorods to stabilize Surface-Structure for enhanced Sodium-ion storage

Abstract:Sodium-ions hybrid capacitors (SIHCs) have been recognized as one of the most potential energy storage devices, which can deliver high power and energy densities simultaneously. However, the sluggish kinetics of electrode materials severely restricts the performance of SIHCs. Herein, N, P-codoped carbon and WS2 nanosheets coating on sodium titanate nanorods (NTO@WS2/N, PC) were first designed by in-situ growing process and sulfuration treatment for boosting sodium-ion storage. Specifically, NTO@WS2/N, PC electrodes displayed a satisfactory specific capacity of 274.7 mAh g-1 at 3.0 A g-1 after 1200 cycles. Furthermore, as-assembled SIHCs delivered high-energy density of 112.1 Wh kg-1 and high-power density of 4334.4 W kg-1. Besides, long-term cycling test revealed that a remarkable capacity retention rate of 89.7% was obtained at 8.0 A g-1 after 2000 cycles. The excellent cycling stability and rate property could be ascribed to following aspects. On the one hand, N, P-codoped carbon could enhance the electrical conductivity and strengthen the structural integrality of the composites. On the other hand, ultrathin WS2 nanosheets and one-dimensional (1D) NTO nanorods structure were conducive to the rapid diffusion of Na+. This work provides a convenient technique to stabilize the structure of electrode materials, which can promote the practical application of SIHCs.
Surface Coating with Li-Ti-O to Improve the Electrochemical Performance of Ni-rich Cathode Material

Abstract:LiNi0.8Co0.1Mn0.1O2 is a promising cathode material for lithium-ion batteries due to its high capacity, high energy density and low cost. However, LiNi0.8Co0.1Mn0.1O2 suffers from an aggressive side reaction with electrolyte, resulting in poor cycling performance, large polarization and fast voltage degradation. To overcome these drawbacks, we use an acid coprecipitation method to prepare rod-shaped LiNi0.8Co0.1Mn0.1O2, and introduce a thin and uniform lithium titanium oxide layer on the surface by a solvothermal method. The 3 mol% lithium titanium oxide-coated LiNi0.8Co0.1Mn0.1O2 exhibits a much higher capacity retention (88.6%) than the pristine material after 100 cycles, and the polarization and voltage degradation of the Ni-rich cathode are largely alleviated. Furthermore, at an elevated temperature of 65 degrees C, the capacity retention of lithium titanium oxide-coated LiNi0.8Co0.1Mn0.1O2 is 81.1% after 50 cycles, which is much higher than that of pristine LiNi0.8Co0.1Mn0.1O2 (only 52.0%). These results suggest that the surface doping of Ti4+ and the introduction of the lithium titanium oxide layer help to improve the structure stability and mitigate the side reactions on the electrode-electrolyte interface, resulting in good electrochemical performance.

Abstract:Sodium ion capacitors (SICs) have attracted extensive attention due to their combination of high-power electric-double-layer capacitors (EDLCs) and high-energy sodium ion batteries (SIBs). However, development of high-performance SIHCs has been plagued by the lack of superior Na+-storage anode materials to couple with the activated carbon (AC) cathode. In this work, we have prepared a sulfur-enriched self-supported TiO2/C nanofiber membrane using a simple and scalable electrospinning technique. In such S-TiO2/C structure, sulfur atoms (13%) are covalently linked with TiO2 nanodots (5–10 nm), which are homogeneously embedded in highly conductive N-doped carbon nanofibers. Chemically bonded sulfur can not only provide additional faradaic pseudocapacitance but also show robust structural stability. In terms of sodium storage performance, the as-made S-TiO2/C electrode exhibits high reversible capacity (410 mAh g‒1 at 0.1 A g‒1), high rate capability (173 mAh g‒1 at 15 A g‒1), and ultralong cycle life (no capacity degradation after 10000 cycles). When coupling with the AC cathode, the SIC full cell is capable of delivering high energy and power densities as well as long cycle life.

Abstract:Sodium-ion hybrid capacitors (SIHCs) are an emerging energy storage device with various potential applications due to their combined merits of batteries and supercapacitors. However, this device still suffers from the slow kinetics of the anode, which severely restricts the rate performance. Herein, we demonstrate that the rate performance of a carbon-nanofiber-based anode can be remarkably enhanced by coating a thin layer of oxygen-vacancy-rich TiO2. The as-prepared material (TiO2@PBC) is used as an anode in a sodium-ion battery, which delivers a reversible capacity of 180.2 mA h g−1 at 10 A g−1 with a capacity retention of 110.7% after 20,000 cycles, outperforming those without TiO2 coating. Furthermore, the TiO2@PBC is assembled into a SIHC with activated carbon as the cathode, which shows an energy density of 91.0 W h kg−1 at a power density of 165 W kg−1 and retaining an energy density of 43.4 W h kg−1 at an ultra-high power density of 13 kW kg−1. The excellent sodium storage performance of TiO2@PBC is attributed to the three-dimensionally cross-linked conductive network, the open ion-transportation channels, and more importantly, the TiO2 coating with high content of oxygen vacancies which expands the lattice and thus enables fast ion transport.

Abstract:Surface modification of graphite anode with electroactive matters has been proven of a more practical strategy in enhancing the performance of Li-ion batteries than exploring alternative novel anode materials. Herein, rutile TiNbO4−x nanoparticles with a tunnel structure are employed as multifunctional decoration substances in combination with a carbon coating layer to improve the rate and cycle properties of mesocarbon microbeads (MCMBs). As compared to pristine MCMB, the Li+ diffusion coefficients of the composite anodes are enhanced due to the synergistic effect of TiNbO4−x@C. Meanwhile, the overcharge and voltage polarization of the composite anodes at high rate are obviously minimized due to the current sharing effect of the high-potential TiNbO4−x. Moreover, the amorphous LiyTiNbO4−x converted from TiNbO4−x in the initial lithiation process can deliver pseudocapacitive capacity to the composite anodes from the second cycle. All of these functions of TiNbO4−x@C coating layer have directly contributed to the improved rate and cycle performance of the MCMB/TiNbO4−x@C composite anodes. The one containing 12.0 wt% TiNbO4−x exhibits a high reversible specific capacity of 118 mAh·g−1 at 10C (1C = 372 mA·g−1), together with a high capacity retention of 90.9% after 300 cycles at 3C, which are all much superior to those of pristine MCMB.Graphical abstract

Abstract:The tunnel-type Na0.44MnO2 as a potential cathode for sodium-ion batteries suffers from issues of manganese dissolution and surface layer outgrowth during cycling, which lead to poor electrochemical performances. It is found by ex situ scanning and transmission electron microscopies that applying a coating of NASICON-type NaTi2(PO4)(3) (NTP) on the surface of Na0.44MnO2 particles can markedly suppress the surface layer growth phenomenon and improve the cycling stability and rate capability of this cathode material. The 2 wt % NTP-coated sample delivers a capacity retention of 99.0% after 100 cycles at 1C and a capacity of 82.2 mAh g(-1) at 20C (71% of 0.1C capacity).

Abstract:In recent years, lithium-ion batteries (LIB) have emerged as one of the most representative rechargeable energy-storage systems. Among the various anode materials used, titanium dioxide stands out for its excellent stability, superior safety, and high cycling performance. Moreover, its remarkable stability in high-capacity charge–discharge cycles is useful for developing fast-charging batteries. Therefore, this material has attracted significant attention from researchers. In this study, we investigate aluminum-doped and carbon-coated non-stoichiometric titanium dioxide for in operando X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis using synchrotron radiation to explore the behavior of lithium ions intercalating into and deintercalating from the titanium dioxide lattice and draw insights from the variations in the characteristic lattice diffraction peaks. In Al-TiOx part, the lithium-ion intercalation and deintercalation behaviors within the mixed-phase titanium dioxide used herein (anatase and rutile). During discharge, a new reversible intermediate phase, LiTiO2, as well as a partially irreversible intermediate phase, Li0.55TiO2, are generated in the anatase phase. This is the first reported experimental observation of the coexistence of these three phases. The irreversible reaction kinetics of these phases contribute to capacity decay. In the rutile phase, the diffraction peaks exhibit a trend of broadening and narrowing during charge–discharge, resembling an hourglass-like structure. This phenomenon implies non-uniform stress within the material due to lithium-ion diffusion through a relatively faster channel. By using in situ XRD, we propose an interaction mechanism between lithium ions and the lattice of mixed-phase (anatase, rutile) titanium dioxide. In C@TiOx part, the rutile TiO2 undergoes a non-uniform strain at a rate of 0.5 C, causing the peak to broaden and shift left after lithiation. The capacities of C@TiO 𝑥 batteries were lowered from 109.0 to only 79.2 mAh/g at 5 C. It is believed that the carbon coating protect the inner TiO 𝑥 core from phase transition so that nanosized rutile TiO2 was retained after lithiation at 0.5 C, which means lithiated rutile is not equivalent to lithium titanate. Instead, the lattice distortion occurs when Li ions are intercalated in the rutile TiO2 matrix. This means that the fast lithium-ion diffusion channel in the c axis of rutile is blocked by the carbon coating and phase transition was prohibited. Furthermore, high reversibility is observed in by the overlap of initial and final curves, which can be taken as an extra evidence for the high Coulombic efficiency. In this study, we propose the concept of aluminum and carbon co-doped non-stoichiometric titanium dioxide for in operando XRD study. Our aim is to further enhance the conductivity of titanium dioxide and its battery performance in lithium-ion batteries through the synergistic effects of heteroatom doping and non-stoichiometric treatment. This includes improvements in the capacity, impedance, cycling lifespan, and high-rate performance of the titanium dioxide material within the battery system.
