Abstract:The global massive consumption of disposable face masks driven by the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic has emerged as a blooming disaster to both the land and marine environment that might last for generations. Growing public concerns have been raised over the management and control of this new form of plastic pollution, and one of the proposed sustainable solution is to use renewable and/or biodegradable resources to develop mask materials in order to minimize their environmental impacts. As a representative biodegradable polymer, polylactic acid (PLA) has been proposed as a promising candidate to produce non-woven face masks instead of those fossil-based polymers. To further explore the feasibility of this alternative mask material, the present work aims to study both the hydrolytic and bio-degradation behaviors of pure PLA-derived 3-ply disposable face masks at ambient temperature. Hydrolytic degradability was investigated at different pH conditions of 2, 7 and 13 with the whole piece of face mask soaked for regular timed intervals up to 8 weeks. Weight loss study showed neutral and acidic conditions had minimal effect on PLA masks, but rapid degradation occurred under basic conditions in the first week with a sharp 25% decrease in weight that slowly tapered off, coupled with solution pH dropping from 13 to 9.6. This trend was supported by mechanical property, bacterial filtration efficiency (BFE) and particulate filtration efficiency (PFE) studies. Masks soaked in basic conditions had their modulus and tensile strength dropped by more than 50% after 8 weeks where the middle layer reached 68% and 90% respectively just after 48 h, and BFE and PFE decreased by 14% and 43% respectively after 4 weeks, which was much more significant than those in neutral and acidic conditions. Base degradation was also supported by nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and fourier transform infrared (FTIR), which disclosed that only the middle layer undergo major degradation with random chain scission and cleavage of enol or enolate chain ends, while outer and inner layers were much less affected. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) attributed this observation to thinner PLA fibers for the middle layer of 3-7 mu m diameter, which on average is 3 times smaller. This degradation was further supported by gel permeation chromatography (GPC) which saw an increase in lower molecular weight fragment Mw similar to 800 Da with soaking duration. The biodegradation behavior was studied under OECD 301F specification in sewage sludge environment. Similarly, degradation to the middle meltblown layer was more extensive, where the average weight loss and carbon loss was 25.8% and 25.7% respectively, double that of outer/inner spunbond layer. The results showed that the face masks did not completely disintegrate after 8 weeks, but small solubilized fragments of PLA formed in the biodegradation process can be completely mineralized into carbon dioxide without generation of secondary microplastic pollution in the environment. PLA masks are therefore a slightly greener option to consider in times of a pandemic that the world was caught unprepared; however future research on masks could be geared towards a higher degradability material that fully breaks down into non-harmful components while maintaining durability, filtration and protection properties for users. Abstract:Increased use of bioplastics, such as polylactic acid (PLA), helps in reducing greenhouse gas emissions, decreases energy consumption and lowers pollution, but its degradation efficiency has much room for improvement. The degradation rate of electrospun PLA fibers of varying diameters ranging from 0.15 to 1.33 μm is measured during hydrolytic degradation under different pH from 5.5 to 10, and during aerobic biodegradation in seawater supplemented with activated sewage sludge. In hydrolytic conditions, varying PLA fiber diameter had significant influence over percentage weight loss ( W %L ), where faster degradation was achieved for PLA fibers with smaller diameter. W %L was greatest for PLA-5 > PLA-12 > PLA-16 > PLA-20, with average W %L at 30.7%, 27.8%, 17.2% and 14.3% respectively. While different pH environment does not have a significant influence on PLA degradation, with W %L only slightly higher for basic environments. Similarly biodegradation displayed faster degradation for small diameter fibers with PLA-5 attaining the highest degree of biodegradation at 22.8% after 90 days. Hydrolytic degradation resulted in no significant structural change, while biodegradation resulted in significant hydroxyl end capping products on the PLA surface. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) imaging of degraded PLA fibers showed a deteriorated morphology of PLA-5 and PLA-12 fibers with increased adhesion structures and irregularly shaped fibers, while a largely unmodified morphology for PLA-16 and PLA-20.

Abstract:Microplastics leaching from aging biodegradable plastics pose potential environmental threats. This study used response surface methodology (RSM) to investigate the impact of temperature, light, and humidity on the aging characteristics of polylactic acid (PLA). Key evaluation metrics included the C/O ratio, functional groups, crystallinity, surface topography, and mechanical properties. Humidity was discovered to have the greatest effect on the ageing of PLA, followed by light and temperature. The interactions between temperature and light, as well as humidity and sunlight, significantly impact the aging of PLA. XPS analysis revealed PLA underwent aging due to the cleavage of the ester bond (O–C=O), resulting in the addition of C=O and C–O. The aging process of PLA was characterized by alterations in surface morphology and augmentation in crystallinity, resulting in a decline in both tensile strength and elongation. These findings might offer insights into the aging behavior of degradable plastics under diverse environmental conditions.

Abstract:China government has implemented regulations to completely ban the use of disposable plastics with about 54 million kt, resulting in tremendous controversies about non-degradable and biodegradable plastics. However, there is still a lack of direct evidence to elucidate the difference of degradation mechanisms among them, which limits the development of applications for biodegradable materials. In this work, we provide direct evidence to clarify the degradation mechanisms between bio- and non-degradable materials. Cellulose, polybutylene adipate terephthalate (PBAT), and polyethylene (PE) film were subjected to phosphate-buffered solution (PBS) degradation, ultraviolet (UV) aging, and soil degradation, and the possible degradation mechanism analysis was carried out. The results exhibited that the cellulose film possessed the shortest degradation cycles whether in PBS degradation, UV aging, or soil degradation, moreover, the cellulose film showed a much higher weight loss of 99.1% after 98 days of soil degradation compared with PBAT film (2.1%) and PE film (1.7%). Additionally, we proposed possible degradation mechanisms to pave the way for the fabrication of green and degradable packaging plastics.
Comparing the Aging Processes of PLA and PE: The Impact of UV Irradiation and Water

Abstract:The aging processes of microplastics (MPs) are prevalent in natural environments. Understanding the aging mechanisms of MPs is crucial for assessing their environmental behavior and potential risks. In this study, we selected polylactic acid (PLA) and polyethylene (PE) as representatives of biodegradable and conventional plastics, respectively, to examine changes in their physicochemical properties induced by water and UV light exposure. Laboratory aging resulted in significant fragmentation, characterized by cracks and pores on the surfaces, for both types of MPs, with PLA MPs exhibiting more severe changes, particularly under combined UV and water exposure. Notably, PLA MPs tended to become progressively smaller after aging, whereas PE MPs did not show significant size changes. Chemical analyses of aged MPs using micro-Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) revealed a substantial increase in the carbonyl index (CI) and oxygen content for PE, suggesting surface oxidation during photo-oxidation. Conversely, PLA MPs displayed a CI decrease, along with an oxygen content increase, indicating the breakdown of ester linkages in PLA and the formation of other oxidation products. Furthermore, we developed and optimized pyrolysis–gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (Py–GC–MS) methods to identify potential chemical degradation products of PE and PLA, considering their differing thermal stabilities. We observed a distinct trend regarding the peaks in the chromatogram of aged MPs and identified the typical oxidation and crosslinking products for PLA. Additionally, after the aging process, both PE and PLA exhibited a significant increase in organic carbon content, with the eluate containing submicron/nano-sized particles. This study provides a scientific foundation for a deeper understanding of the environmental aging mechanisms of various MPs, particularly in regards to the effects of UV irradiation and water exposure.

Abstract:The current 3-ply facemasks are produced mostly using polypropylene (PP) as the main plastic layer that is a non-biodegradable polymer. The objective of this study was to fabricate a polylactic acid (PLA) layer, a biodegradable polymer, using the electrospinning process. Comparison on the degradation trend of PLA layer and PP layer obtained from commercial 3-ply face mask (CFM) layer in seawater, river water, soil, and compost environment for a total of 60 days was observed. Results showed that the electrospinning method can produce PLA layers with similar thickness with current CFM layer, narrow distribution of fiber diameter, and slightly dense surface morphology comparable to the CFM. Synthesized PLA fiber layer shows 68.6%, 39.8%, and 415.7% improvement in tensile strength, Young’s modulus, and elongation at break, respectively, compared to CFM samples. Meanwhile, for the degradation study, PLA samples show more significant changes on its morphology corresponding to the degradation process that occurred on its fibers in the seawater, river water, and soil environment, whereas for the weight change study, only the soil environment shows significant changes after 45 days. In contrast, CFM samples did not show any significant changes corresponding to degradation activity.

Abstract:The aim of this study was to highlight family members’ experiences of participating in Family Health Conversation (FamHC), based on families in which a family member was living in a residential home for older people. A total of 10 families and 22 family members participated in evaluating family interviews 1 month after participating in FamHC. The interviews were analyzed by qualitative content analysis. The main finding was being a part of FamHC increased family members’ insights, understanding, and communication within the family. Getting confirmation from nurses was essential to cope with the new life situation, which also meant that they felt comfortable to partly hand over the responsibility for the older person who moved to the residential home. By being open and expressing their feelings, a bad conscience could be relieved. These findings showed that FamHC could be helpful for family members in adapting to this novel situation.

Abstract:Benzophenone (BP) and N‐vinylpyrrolidone (NVP) were used to modify the surface of polylactide (PLA) films by UV grafting method. Hydrophilicity of modified PLA films is improved, but their thermal and mechanical properties are reduced. NVP‐PLA is better than BP‐PLA to accelerate the hydrolytic degradation process. The degradation of BP‐PLA obeys the first‐order kinetics in part, while the degradation of NVP‐PLA is more complex. Benzophenone (BP) and N‐vinylpyrrolidone (NVP) were used to modify the surface of polylactide (PLA) films by UV grafting method. The effects of light distance, temperature, reaction time, and modifier concentration on the structure and properties of PLA films were investigated by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), and universal testing machine (UTM). With BP and NVP UV grafting, the hydrophilicity of PLA films is improved, but their thermal and mechanical properties are reduced under different surface modification condition. Base on the principle of good surface hydrophilicity, better mechanical and thermal properties, the hydrolytic degradation performance of modified PLA films in artificial seawater at 70°C was studied by scanning electron microscopy, XPS and DSC. The research results show that the degradation of modified PLA films mainly occurs in the amorphous region, and the degradation process conforms to surface hydrolysis mechanism. The grafting modification of NVP is better than BP to accelerate the degradation process of PLA films in artificial seawater. The degradation of modified PLA undergoes water molecule erosion and autocatalytic degradation reaction. The degradation of BP‐PLA obeys the first‐order kinetics in part, while the degradation of NVP‐PLA is more complex. Therefore, surface hydrophilicity modification is an effective technique for improving the degradability of PLA.

Abstract:Owing to its biosynthetic and biodegradable properties, polylactic acid (PLA) is considered to be a most promising biopolymer that could play a crucial role as a potentially environmentally friendly material for a sustainable bioeconomy. However, its long-life cycle indicates that it cannot be easily degraded in nature. Therefore, understanding the biodegradation mechanism of PLA is important for reducing the impacts of waste plastic and waste disposal. With the recent development of molecular biology techniques, some studies have confirmed that specific groups of microorganisms can facilitate the biodegradation of PLA. Here, recent advances in the biodegradation of PLA (i.e., microbial and enzymatic degradation) and key factors affecting the degradation efficiency were reviewed. In addition, compared with complete degradation through mineralization, upcycling is also proposed as a more recyclable strategy for disposing of waste plastics.

Abstract:With the popularity of 3D-printing technology, poly(lactic acid) (PLA) has become a very good option for layer by layer printing as it is easy to handle, environment friendly, has low costs and most importantly, it is highly adaptable to different materials including carbon, nylon and some other fibres. PLA is an aliphatic poly-ester that is 100% bio-based and is bio-degradable as well. It is one of the rare bio-polymers to compete with traditional polymers in terms of performance and environmental impact. However, PLA is sensitive to water and susceptible to degradation under natural conditions of ultra-violet rays (UV), humidity, fumes, etc. There are many reports on the bio-degradation and photo-degradation of PLA which deal with the accelerated weathering test. However, the accelerated weathering test instruments lack the ability to correlate the stabilities maintained by the test with the actual occurrences during natural exposure. Thus, an attempt has been made in the present work to expose the 3D-printed PLA samples to actual atmospheric conditions of Aurangabad city (M.S.) in India. The degradation of PLA after the exposure is studied and a mechanism is elucidated. Additionally, the tensile properties of the PLA samples are evaluated to correlate the extent of degradation and the material performance. It was found that though the performance of PLA deteriorates with the exposure time, the combination of in-fill pattern and volume plays an important role on the tensile properties and the extent of degradation. It is concluded herein that with natural exposure, the degradation of PLA occurs in two stages, supported by a side reaction. Thus, this study offers a new perspective towards the life of components in actual application by exposing PLA to the natural atmosphere and evaluating its strength and structure.
Degradation Behaviors of Polylactic Acid, Polyglycolic Acid, and Their Copolymer Films in Simulated Marine Environments

Abstract:Poly(lactic acid) (PLA) and poly(glycolic acid) (PGA) are extensively studied biodegradable polymers. However, the degradation behavior of their copolymer, poly(lactic-co-glycolic acid) (PLGA), in marine environments has not yet been confirmed. In this study, the changes in macroscopic and microscopic morphology, thermal properties, aggregation, and chemical structure of PLA, PGA, PLGA-85, and PLGA-75 (with 85% and 75% LA content) in simulated marine environments were investigated. Results revealed that degradation occurred through hydrolysis of ester bonds, and the degradation rate of PGA was faster than that of PLA. The amorphous region degraded preferentially over the crystalline region, leading to cleavage-induced crystallization and decreased thermal stability of PLA, PLGA-85, and PLGA-75. The crystal structures of PLGAs were similar to those of PLA, and the higher GA content, the faster was the degradation rate. This study provides a deeper understanding of the seawater degradation behaviors of PLA, PGA, and their copolymers, and provides guidance for the preparation of materials with controllable degradation performance.

Abstract:This paper presents a study on the degradation of Poly (lactic acid) (PLA), Poly (butylene abdicate—terephthalate) (PBAT) and their blends with different proportions in the environment of digested sludge. The degradation rates of PLA and PBAT were obtained through anaerobic reaction device. The samples obtained at regular intervals were measured and analyzed by differential scanning calorimeter (DSC), infrared spectrometer (FTIR) and scanning electron microscope (SEM) respectively. The results showed that the degradation rate of PLA was higher than that of PBAT under the same degradation environment and degradation time. DSC results showed that the degradation rate of PLA in the amorphous phase was slowed by the influence of PBAT. The characteristic peaks of the materials on the infrared spectrum shifted after degradation which implicit the degradation occurs. At the microscopic level, numerous protruding ribs in the material can be seen in the electron micrograph. Obviously, the samples can be degraded under the environment of digested sludge.

Abstract:During COVID-19, personal protective equipment such as face masks was in urgent demand in the daily life. As the pandemic may have withdrawn from public attention, the disposal of face masks is a significant issue, especially plastic pollution. To address the degradation of the polymers in the marine environment, seven commercial masks were investigated via artificial weathering procedures in substitute ocean water. A suite of structural and chemical characterization techniques was employed, including scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), Raman spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction (XRD), and contact angle goniometry, to probe the treatment impact on commercially available N95, surgical, polyurethane, polyester, nylon, silk, and cotton masks. This work provides insights into the comprehensive analysis of material degradation in nature and raises public awareness of environmental issues post-pandemic.

Abstract:Due to their extensive use during and after the COVID-19 pandemic, many disposable face masks are irresponsibly deposited into the water environment, threatening the health of people living nearby. However, the effects of water conditions on the degradation and potential hazards of these masks are generally unclear. This paper entailed the release and cellular toxicity of micro/nano plastics from disposable face masks once discarded in different waters, including soil water, river water, and tap water , with deionized (DI) water as control. At first, polypropylene (PP) was confirmed to be the major component of disposable face masks with Raman and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) techniques. To monitor the release rate of PP from masks, a silver nanoparticle (AgNP)-based surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) method was established by employing the unique Raman fingerprint of PP at 2882 cm −1 . During 30-d incubation in different waters, the release rates of PP, sizes of PP aggregates, length of fibers, and proportions of plastics smaller than 100 nm were in the order of soil water > river water > tap water > DI water. All the obtained PP exhibited significant toxicity in human lung cancer (A549) cells at concentrations of 70 mg/L for 48 h, and the ones obtained in soil water exhibited the most severe damage. Overall, this paper revealed that environmental waters themselves would worsen the adverse effects of disposable face masks, and the key compounds affecting the degradation of masks remain to be clarified. Such information, along with the established methods, could be beneficial in assessing the health risks of disposable face masks in different waters.

Degradation efficiency of biodegradable plastics in subtropical open-air and marine environments: Implications for plastic pollution

Abstract:Bioplastics are increasingly used as a solution to tackle plastic pollution problems. However, their degradability in natural environments is currently under debate. To evaluate their degradation efficiencies, we conducted in-situ degradation experiments in an open-air and two marine environments in Hong Kong. Three groups of biodegradable plastic were tested, namely (1) additive-modified low-density polyethylene (LDPE), labelled as oxo-biodegradable or photodegradable plastics, (2) polylactic acid (PLA), and (3) polyvinyl alcohol (PVA)/starch blends. Most biodegradable plastics fail to completely degrade but remain visually present after six months of exposure. Only PLA is able to demonstrate 100 % disintegration in one to three months in marine settings, suggesting that subtropical marine environments may favor PLA degradation. Biodegradable plastics that are bio-based (PLA and PVA/Starch blends) show notably larger mass losses by 23-100 % than the fossil-based ones (modified-LDPE). Our results reveal higher degradation efficiencies of PLA and PVA/Cassava starch blend in marine than open-air settings (with mass losses larger by 50 %, and by 39-41 %, respectively), potentially via biodegradation and hydrolysis. Meanwhile, modified-LDPE and PVA/Corn starch blends in general show higher degradation efficiencies in open-air than marine settings (with mass losses larger by 2 %, and by 17-33 %, respectively), potentially via abiotic oxidation. Since all tested biodegradable plastics exhibit potential fragmentation signs, further investigation is needed to characterize the behaviours of the microplastics generated. The current labelling on biodegradable bags fails to provide comprehensive information regarding their actual environmental degradation behaviours, especially considering their fragmentation risk and limited degradation exhibited in this study. This highlights the imperative for improved messaging to ensure consumers are better informed about these products.

Abstract:This research investigated the degradation of polylactic acid (PLA) and polylactic acid/natural rubber (PLA/NR) films submerged in water by focusing on the effect of film constituents, which were natural rubber and an organic peroxide, as well as an exposure to outdoor sunlight. The degradation of film samples was characterized by the changes in molecular structure, toughness, morphology, thermal properties and weight loss of the films and pH of water. It was found that hydrolysis was the primary degradation mechanism of the films submerged in purified water in the indoor condition, while photo-degradation was more prominent in the outdoor condition. Moreover, the presence of NR in PLA led to faster degradation of the films in aqueous environment both indoor and outdoor, while the addition of 0.02 wt% organic peroxide did not delay the degradation of PLA/NR films. These results indicate the potential of NR as it not only improved the toughness of PLA films during their useful life but also accelerated the films' degradation in aqueous environment after use.

Abstract:Poly lactic acid (PLA), an alternative to petroleum-based plastics, has been used in food packaging and disposable tableware for the biodegradable property. As a result, PLA fragments were often mixed with kitchen wastes (KW) and disposed together. This study aimed to assess the fate of polylactic acid microplastics (PMP) when co-digested with KW. The PMP did not increase the methane yield of KW but had deformation and fragmentation at mesophilic and thermophilic conditions, respectively. Identification of physicochemical properties and leachates showed that the co-digestion process caused the ageing and fragmentation of PMP, including the generation of irregular cracking and tiny daughter particles, the increase of oxygen-containing functional groups, and the releasing of dissolved organic matters. Thermophilic anaerobic co-digestion enhanced the ageing and fragmentation of PMP to the highest degree, which was attributed to the high temperature and enriched microorganisms (Peptococcaceae, Tepidimicrobium, and Clostridium_sensu_stricto_7) in the biofilm.

Abstract:Abstract In the field of governing our “Plastic Planet”, polylactic acid (PLA) has been considered to be a promising and ecologically friendlier alternative to traditional petroleum-based plastics. However, PLA-based products degrade slowly in the natural environment, likely resulting in a large accumulation of PLA waste worldwide in the near future. Herein, we have incorporated artificially cultured diatom frustules (DFs) into PLA, and found an improvement of more than eightfold on the degradation rate, from more than 24 months to 3 months or even less, as compared with the pure PLA. Mechanistic investigations illustrate that DFs change the degradation behavior of PLA from surface erosion to bulk erosion by the induced microfibril crystals. Simulation analysis verifies that the unstable crack propagation inside the PLA matrix greatly accelerates the degradation. The method developed in this work provides an efficient way to achieve rapid and controllable degradation of biodegradable polymers for the urgent and widespread usage of green plastic productions.

Abstract:Plastic pollution is a major threat facing our environment. To understand the full effects, we must first characterize how plastics break down in environmental systems. Heretofore, there has been little work examining how exposure to sewage sludge facilitates the degradation of plastics, particularly of plastics that have been previously weathered. Herein, we characterize how the crystallinity, surface chemistry, and morphology of polylactic acid (PLA) and polyethylene (PE) films change due to sludge exposure. In this work, sludge-induced changes in carbonyl index were found to depend on the level of prior exposure to ultraviolet (UV) irradiation. The carbonyl indices of un-irradiated films increased while those of UV-aged films decreased after 35 days of sludge exposure. In addition, the carbon‑oxygen and hydroxyl bond indices of PE films increased with sludge exposure, suggesting the surface oxidation of PE. As for PLA, crystallinity was found to increase with sludge exposure, consistent with a chain scission mechanism. This work will help to predict the behavior of plastic films after transfer from wastewater to sewage sludge.
