Abstract:In this work, portable gas chromatography–microflame ionization detection (portable GC–μFID) coupled to headspace solid-phase microextraction (HS-SPME) was developed for the field analysis of benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene and xylene (BTEX) in water samples. The HS-SPME parameters such as fiber coating, extraction times, stirring rate, the ratio of headspace volume to sample volume, and sodium chloride concentration were studied. A 65μm poly(dimethylsiloxane)-divinylbenzene (PDMS-DVB) SPME fiber, 900rpm, 3.0ml of headspace (1.0ml water sample in 4.0ml vial), and 35% sodium chloride concentration (w/v) were respectively chosen for the best extraction response. An extraction time of 1.0min was enough to extract BTEX in water samples. The relative standard deviation (R.S.D.) for the procedure varied from 5.4% to 8.3%. The method detection limits (MDLs) found were lower than 1.5μg/l, which was enough sensitive to detect the BTEX in water samples. The optimized method was applied to the field analysis of BTEX in wastewater samples. These experiment results show that portable GC–μFID combined with HS-SPME is a rapid, simple and effective tool for field analysis of BTEX in water samples.

Abstract:A headspace-hollow fiber solid-phase microextraction (HS-HFSPME) as a selective and sensitive procedure was developed to extract benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, and p-xylene (BTEX) prior to their determination with gas chromatography-flame ionization detection. δ-Al2O3@SiO2@CTAB core–shell was synthesized as a novel sorbent for the BTEX extraction and enforced into the surface pores on the polypropylene hollow fiber (HF) using sol–gel procedure. The preparation of an HF device for HS-HFSPME can be highly regarded for creating a cheap disposable tool with no memory effects. A chemometric approach, including the Plackett–Burman design and the central composite design, was utilized to optimize the effective factors due to a low number of experiments and investigate the factor interaction. The method shows low LODs (≤ 0.01 ng ml−1), wide linearity, high preconcentration factor (≥ 265), and suitable RSDs (≤ 5.2%) toward the BTEX determination. The method was finally applied to measure BTEX in Buxus leaves and wastewater samples with high recoveries in the range of 89.7–103.4 and low RSD% in the range of 4.64–6.20%, showing the method has suitable recoveries and repeatability. The results confirm that the HS-HFSPME-GC/FID method is an excellent procedure to measure BTEX in various real samples such as plant and wastewater samples with great benefits such as low organic solvent consumption, simple operation, and high sensitivity for the BTEX determination.

Determination Of 67 Volatile Organic Compounds In Ambient Air Using Thermal Desorption-Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry

Abstract:A method based on thermal desorption-gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (TD GC -MS) was developed for the simultaneous analysis of 67 volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in ambient air. In this study, the adsorption effects of five kinds of stainless steel sorbent tubes for 78 VOCs were compared. The results revealed that a multisorbent bed with Carbograph 1TD and Tenax TA shows good adsorption effect for the 67 target compounds. The breakthrough rates of all the target compounds were less than 10% when high-purity helium gas was continuously purged for 45 min at 30 mL/min. The analytes included aromatic hydrocarbons, aliphatic hydrocarbons, halogenated hydrocarbons, and oxygen-containing volatile organic compounds. The thermal desorption conditions for the determination of the target substances were optimized. In the range 5 -100 ng, the chromatographic response of the target compounds had a good linear relationship with their corresponding amounts, and the correlation coefficient (r) was between 1. 000 0 and 0. 997 7. The method detection limits ( MDLs) were 0. 3-2. 4 ng or 0. 3 -2. 4 mu g/m(3), as calculated by a 1 L sampling volume. The method was validated by means of recovery experiments (n =7) with the addition of 20 ng standard samples. The recoveries of all the target compounds were in the range of 81. 6% -114. 9%, and their relative standard deviations (RSDs) were in the range of 1. 2%-10. 2%. The VOCs present in the air in a carriage were detected using this method. The 19 target compounds included esters, halogenated alkanes, halogenated olefins, and aromatic substances, whose concentrations ranged from 1. 1 to 84. 1 g/m3. These results indicated that our method is accurate, reliable, and sensitive, and can allow for accurate quantification of the 67 target pollutants in ambient air.
Refrigerated sorptive extraction: determination of BTEX in water samples

Abstract:Benzene, toluene, ethyl benzene, o-xylene, m-xylene, and p-xylene (BTEX) enrichment from aqueous samples is performed using refrigerated sorptive extraction (RSE). RSE implies the sorption of volatiles compounds into polydimethylsiloxane (approximately 0.39 mg) coated on an open stainless steel tube internally refrigerated by cold water. A metal tube is inserted into a 30-mL headspace vial through a hole at both sides of the vial. The sample inside the vial is equilibrated with stirring for 60 min at 40 degrees C. After the extraction, the analytes are desorbed with 280 microL of methanol under ultrasonic bath. BTEXs are analyzed by high resolution gas chromatography-flame ionization detection. Optimization of temperature and extraction time were carried out, as well validation in terms of linearity, precision, recuperation, limits of detection and quantification. Linearity is the range 0.999-0.998, linear range between 50 and 1000 microg/L, precision is 6.1% to 14.7% in the 0.1 microg/mL level and 3.5% to 5.6% in the 1 microg/mL level. Recovery ranged from 30% to 50%, detection limits from 1.7 to 19.6 microg/L, and quantification limits from 6.7 to 64.6 microg/L. The optimized method was applied to the analysis of water samples collected near a gas station, which was suspected of contamination by gas oil leaking from storage tanks.
On-line monitoring of benzene air concentrations while driving in traffic by means of isotopic dilution gas chromatography/mass spectrometry

Abstract:There is no shortage of information about the average benzene concentrations in urban air, but there is very little about microenvironmental exposure, such as in-vehicle concentrations while driving in various traffic conditions, while refuelling, or while in a parking garage. The main reason for this lack of data is that no analytical instrumentation has been available to measure on-line trace amounts of benzene in such situations. We have recently proposed a highly accurate, high-speed cryofocusing gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC/MS) system for monitoring benzene concentrations in air. Accuracy of the analytical data is achieved by enrichment of the air sample before trapping, with a stable isotope permeation tube system. The same principles have been applied to a new instrument, specifically designed for operation on an electric vehicle (Ducato Elettra, Fiat). The zero emission vehicle and the fully transportable, battery-operated GC/MS system provide a unique possibility of monitoring benzene exposure in real everyday situations such as while driving, refuelling, or repairing a car. All power consumptions have been reduced so as to achieve a battery-operated GC/MS system. Liquid nitrogen cryofocusing has been replaced by a packed, inductively heated, graphitized charcoal microtrap. The instrument has been mounted on shock absorbers and installed in the van. The whole system has been tested in both fixed and mobile conditions. The maximum monitoring period without external power supply is 6 h. The full analytical cycle is 4 min, allowing close to real-time monitoring, and the minimum detectable level is 1 microgram/m3 for benzene. In-vehicle monitoring showed that, when recirculation was off and ventilation on, i.e., air from outside the vehicle was blown inside, concentrations varied widely in different driving conditions: moving from a parking lot into normal traffic on an urban traffic condition roadway yielded an increase in benzene concentration from 17 to 62.3 micrograms/m3 even if the actual distance was small. A larger increase was observed when a car was left with the engine running at a distance 2 m from the zero emission vehicle: We measured an increment of benzene concentrations from 15.2 to 174.4 micrograms/m3 with a car equipped with a catalytic converter, and from 19.1 to 386.3 micrograms/m3 with a car without such a converter.

Abstract:Benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene and xylenes (BTEX) are some of the better-known indoor air pollutants , for which effective monitoring is important. The analysis of BTEX can be performed by different type of solid phase microextraction (SPME) fibers. This study presents a proposal for a low cost, convenient and environmentally friendly analytical method for the determination of BTEX in air samples using custom made SPME fibers. In this context, custom made metal organic frameworks (MOF-801) were coated on a stainless-steel wire for SPME fiber preparation. The analysis of BTEX was performed by introducing SPME fiber into an analyte-containing Tedlar bag in steady-state conditions. After the sampling step, the analytes were analyzed using gas chromatography mass spectrometry in selected ion monitoring mode. Parameters that affect the analysis results were optimized; these include desorption temperature and time, preconditioning time, extraction temperature and time, and sample volume. Under optimized conditions, analytical figure of merits of developed method were obtained, including limits of detection (LOD) (0.012 – 0.048 mg/m 3 ), linear ranges (0.041–18 mg/m 3 ), intraday and interday repeatability (2.08 - 4.04% and 3.94 - 6.35%), and fiber to fiber reproducibility (7.51 - 11.17%). The proposed method was successfully applied to real air samples with an acceptable recovery values between 84.5% and 110.9%. The developed method can be applied for the effective monitoring of BTEX.

Abstract:The aim of this work was to determine the level of benzene, toluene, o-xylene and m, p-xylene (BTX) in air samples collected from the cabins of new and used vehicles of the same model. Ten new vehicles were examined in order to check interior emission from materials used to equip the passenger compartment. In order to compare and define the impact of exhaust gases, air samples were also collected from two used cars, at different mileages (up to 20,000 km). All vehicles tested were of the same type. Samples were collected onto Carbograph 1TD sorbent, thermally desorbed and examined with the use of gas chromatography with flame ionisation and mass spectrometry detectors. All results obtained were referred to Polish and German requirements for indoor air quality (both in public buildings and in workspace environments). Average benzene, toluene, o-xylene and m, p-xylene concentrations in new cars were determined at the level of 11.8 microg/m3, 82.7 micro/m3, 21.2 microg/m3 and 89.5 micro/m3, respectively. In the used cars, BTX concentration increased with increasing vehicle mileage. The most significant increase of BTX concentration was observed above 11,000 km mileage.

Abstract:The isotopic analysis of atmospheric volatile organic compounds (VOCs), and in particular their carbon isotope ratio (δ 13 C), has the potential to be an effective tool for clearly identifying sources of these pollutants. However, to date, there have been very few such analyses. In the work described herein, we have attempted to analyze the δ 13 C values of VOCs using solid-phase micro-extraction (SPME) coupled with chromatography, combustion, and isotope ratio mass spectrometry (SPME-GC/C/IRMS). The collection and equilibration of VOCs on an SPME fiber required approximately 700−800 min. Although this sample acquisition time is relatively long, extraction and analysis could be achieved reasonably rapidly. The δ 13 C values of benzene, trichloroethylene, toluene, tetrachloroethylene, ethylbenzene, m,p -xylenes, styrene, and o -xylene in a 200 ppb standard gas determined by SPME-GC/C/IRMS ranged from − 29.7‰ to − 22.9‰. The standard deviations ranged from ± 0.4 to ± 1.6‰, and were thus very reasonable compared to those in other studies. In addition, we tested air samples with concentrations ranging from 5 to 500 ppb. In general, because the reasonable precision of GC/C/IRMS is < 0.2‰, the required area of SPME-GC/C/IRMS ranged from 12 Vs ( o -xylene) to 50 Vs ( m,p -xylenes). The δ 13 C values of benzene for vehicle exhaust and in the vicinity of a gas station were − 25.3 ± 1.0‰ and − 26.2 ± 0.7‰, respectively. Compared with other references, the data in this study were reasonable. The detected differences between gasoline and vehicle emissions were similar to those in previous research. Our δ 13 C value of benzene for vehicle exhaust closely resembled values in the vicinity of a gas station. This narrow range may have been because vehicle exhaust samples in this research were collected in cold start mode rather than hot mode. Benzene in gasoline can be emitted through the tail pipe due to inactivity of the catalyst in cold mode.

Abstract:A high sensitive method has been developed for measuring atmospheric BTEX (Benzene, Toluene, Ethylbenzene, Xylenes) by using Gas Chromatography equipped with Photo-Ionization Detector (GC-PID). The Method Detection Limits (MDLs) were: Benzene 0.66 ng m(-3), Toluene 2.03 ng m(-3), Ethylbenzene 5.91 ng m(-3), m,p-Xylene 6.49 ng m(-3) and o-Xylene 5.45 ng m(-3). Vertical distribution of BTEX from ground level to 3600 m around Beijing city was measured during flight of aircraft in July and November, 2011. Remarkable decrease of each BTEX species with increasing height was observed, and the sum concentration of BTEX decreased from 21.7 mu g m(-3) at ground level to 0.19 mu g m(-3) at height of 3600 m. The ratio of benzene to toluene (B/T) also increased pronouncedly with increasing altitude, but became flat above 1800 m. The vertical distribution characters of BTEX and B/T were ascribed to diffusion and photochemical consumption of BTEX. (C) 2013 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Abstract:High-throughput screening of samples is the strategy of choice to detect occupational exposure biomarkers, yet it requires a user-friendly apparatus that gives relatively prompt results while ensuring high degrees of selectivity, precision, accuracy and automation, particularly in the preparation process. Miniaturization has attracted much attention in analytical chemistry and has driven solvent and sample savings as easier automation, the latter thanks to the introduction on the market of the three axis autosampler. In light of the above, this contribution describes a novel user-friendly solid-phase microextraction (SPME) off- and on-line platform coupled with gas chromatography and triple quadrupole-mass spectrometry to determine urinary metabolites of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons 1- and 2-hydroxy-naphthalene, 9-hydroxy-phenanthrene, 1-hydroxy-pyrene, 3- and 9-hydroxy-benzoantracene, and 3-hydroxy-benzo[a]pyrene. In this new procedure, chromatography's sensitivity is combined with the user-friendliness of N-tert-butyldimethylsilyl-N-methyltrifluoroacetamide on-fiber SPME derivatization using direct immersion sampling; moreover, specific isotope-labelled internal standards provide quantitative accuracy. The detection limits for the seven OH-PAHs ranged from 0.25 to 4.52 ng/L. Intra-(from 2.5 to 3.0%) and inter-session (from 2.4 to 3.9%) repeatability was also evaluated. This method serves to identify suitable risk-control strategies for occupational hygiene conservation programs.

Abstract:Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are continuously emitted into the atmosphere from natural and anthropogenic sources and rapidly spread from the atmosphere to different environments. A large group of VOCs has been included in the class of air pollutants; therefore, their determination and monitoring using reliable and sensitive analytical methods represents a key aspect of health risk assessment. In this work, an untargeted approach is proposed for the evaluation of the exposure to volatile organic compounds of workers in an engine manufacturing plant by GC–MS measurements, coupled with solid-phase microextraction (SPME). The analytical procedure was optimized in terms of SPME fiber, adsorption time, desorption time, and temperature gradient of the chromatographic run. For the microextraction of VOCs, the SPME fibers were exposed to the air in two different zones of the manufacturing factory, i.e., in the mixing painting chamber and the engine painting area. Moreover, the sampling was carried out with the painting system active and running (system on) and with the painting system switched off (system off). Overall, 212 compounds were identified, but only 17 were always present in both zones (mixing painting chamber and engine painting area), regardless of system conditions (on or off). Finally, a semi-quantitative evaluation was performed considering the peak area value of the potentially most toxic compounds by multivariate data analyses.

Abstract:Abstract Compressor stations utilizing large-bore natural gas engines transport natural gas through pipelines worldwide. One emission class regulated by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is volatile organic compounds (VOCs), which are nonmethane, nonethane, nonaldehyde hydrocarbons. The combination of a gas chromatograph (GC) and a flame ionization detector (FID) can measure VOCs, following EPA Method 18/25A. The Fourier transform infrared spectrometer (FTIR) also measures VOCs, following EPA Method 320. Multiple VOC calculation techniques are utilized, some combining measurements from separate analyzers. Two basic methods of extracting exhaust gas are direct extraction and Tedlar bag sampling. In this study, various VOC quantification methods are evaluated. Exhaust gas was sampled from a Cooper-Bessemer GMV lean-burn engine and a Caterpillar G3304 rich-burn engine. The GMV was tested in three configurations: open chamber spark ignition, precombustion chamber (PCC) ignition, and PCC ignition with high-pressure fuel injection. Ignition timing sweeps were performed on both engines, and a fuel variability test was performed on the GMV. Results showed that the Gasmet and MKS FTIRs’ (Method 320) VOC measurements deviate significantly from the HP GC when measuring low molar concentrations, albeit below regulatory limits. A common VOC quantification approach is subtracting the sum of methane and ethane FTIR measurements from a total hydrocarbon measurement utilizing a FID. This method produces uncertainties of 190% and overestimates VOC concentration by an average of 100%. The Tedlar bag sampling method produced VOC measurements within −2% of the direct extraction method.

Abstract:Benzene, toluene, and xylene isomers (BTXs) and pyrene, benzo(b)fluoranthene, and benzo(a)pyrene (polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons) are common pollutants found in many industrial effluents and in aquifers due to fossil fuels spill from underground storage reservoirs. For these reasons, the determination of these compounds has gained importance in the last decades. In this work, a simultaneous, fast, and accurate quantification of six petroleum hydrocarbon compounds (such as BTXs, pyrene, benzo(b)fluoranthene, and benzo(a)pyrene) using a high-performance liquid chromatography–diode array detector method has been demonstrated. The proposed method is suitable for the direct aqueous sample evaluation and also brings advantages, including the use of small volumes of organic solvents, with high resolution, reducing the analysis cost. The method was also checked using synthetic and real samples, including those containing surfactants, commercial gasoline, and river water samples spiked with petroleum hydrocarbon compounds.

Abstract:We present a hybrid system for rapid detection and analysis of benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, and xylenes (BTEX). The system combines selective and sensitive sensing elements with a fast and miniaturized chromatographic separation method. The sensing elements are an array of microfabricated quartz crystal tuning forks modified with selective molecularly imprinted polymers, and the separation method uses optimized short columns. The high sensitivity and selectivity of the sensing elements together with the help of the separation provides fast detection and analysis of BTEX in real samples containing highly concentrated interfering agents without preconcentration or heating of columns. The low cost, low power consumption, and small size of the hybrid device are particularly suitable for occupational health, industrial safety, and epidemiological applications.

Abstract:Abstract Exposure to benzene and other volatile organic compounds (VOCs) like toluene, ethylbenzene, o -, m -, and p -xylene (BTEX) at a fuel station is hazardous for the workers. This study aims to estimate the health risk for worker due to the exposure of BTEX after implementation of vapour recovery system (VRS) at fuel stations. Air samples were collected using low-flow sampling pump as per NIOSH method by using Tenax (sorbent) tubes and charcoal (sorbent) tubes. Target compounds were extracted using acetone and analysed by gas chromatography equipped with flame ionization detector (FID). The cancer risk (CR) and hazard quotient (HQ) were estimated to assess the cancer and non-cancer risk following the United States of Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) updated methodology. The average concentration of VOCs at the fuel station is found in the order toluene > benzene > xylene > ethylbenzene which may be attributed to the composition of fuel (petrol/diesel). Benzene is the most carcinogenic among BTEX, which is found to be 217 ± 9 μg m −3 and 158 ± 9 μg m −3 in the month of November 2021 using Tenax sorbent and charcoal sorbent tubes, respectively. The high concentration observed using Tenax sorbent may be attributed to its high adsorption efficacy than charcoal due to larger surface area and porosity. The 7-month average CR value of benzene was 9 × 10 −4 using Tenax sorbent and exceeds the acceptable range of 1 × 10 −6 . CR of benzene exposure at the fuel station under study is also compared with that of outdoor ambient air exposure. Benzene measurement data for the same duration was taken from nearby online monitoring station of Delhi Pollution Control Committee (DPCC) PUSA to estimate CR value for outdoor ambient air benzene exposure. The value of HQ for benzene was observed > 1 which exceeds the acceptable value and hence increased the non-cancer health risk also. Hazard index (HI) value for BTEX is also greater than 1 which indicates adverse health effects of benzene and other VOCs at the fuel station. The high CR and HQ values for benzene are a matter of concern for fuel station workers.

Abstract:The content of characteristic pollutants including methyl tert-butyl ether (MTBE) and benzene, toluene, ethyl benzene, p-xylene, m-xylene and o-xylene (BTEX) were determined by head-space-GC. A HP-FFAP capillary column was used in this method. In the mass concentration range of 14.8μg·L-1~1760μg·L-1, there were good linearity relationships between the GC peak areas and the mass concentrations of components with correlation coefficient above 0.999.The detection limits were in the rage of 2.0μg·L-1~2.3μg·L-1. Tests for recoveries and precision were made by standard addition method, values of recoveries and RSDs (n=6) found were in the range of 95%~105% and 0.8%~5.5%.

Abstract:Benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, and xylenes (BTEX) are commonly found in crude oil and are used in geochemical investigations as direct indicators of the presence of oil and gas. BTEX are easily volatile and can be degraded by microorganisms, which affect their precise measurement seriously. A method for determining the biodegradation process of BTEX in seabed sediment using dynamic headspace (purge and trap) gas chromatography with a photoionization detector (PID) was developed, which had a detection limit of 7.3–13.2 ng L−1 and a recovery rate of 91.6–95.0%. The decrease in the concentration of BTEX components was monitored in seabed sediment samples, which was caused by microorganism biodegradation. The results of BTEX biodegradation process were of great significance in the collection, transportation, preservation, and measurement of seabed sediment samples in the geochemical investigations of oil and gas.

Abstract:Ethanol abuse is increasingly becoming a global issue, adversely affecting both society and families. In blood alcohol concentration (BAC) detection, traditional techniques have long experimental cycles and harsh experimental conditions and often fail to produce timely results. Consequently, achieving swift and precise on-site detection of ethanol poisoning in humans poses a formidable challenge in analytical science. We designed a novel assay for swift on-site analysis of ethanol and BTEX (benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, and xylene) poisoning in humans using a custom portable headspace injector (portable HS) and portable gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (portable GC-MS). This setup, known for its lightweight design and speed, allows on-site sampling and delivers rapid results. We established a calibration curve (R 2 > 0.99) for ethanol in blood using portable gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (portable GC-MS). This on-site blood alcohol concentration (BAC) assay proves simpler than traditional methods, enabling rapid analysis of each sample within a short timeframe and requiring only a small blood volume (0.1 ml). In addition to our investigation on ethanol, we developed a portable method for detecting BTEX in blood. This method provides a favorable coefficient of determination (R 2 > 0.99) for various substances, thereby broadening the utility of portable mass spectrometry in areas such as traffic inspection and forensic identification.
