Abstract:Microporous organic networks (MONs) are highly porous materials that are particularly useful in analytical chemistry. However, the use of these materials is often limited by the functional groups available on their surface. Here, we described the polymerization of a sea urchin-like structure material at ambient temperature, that was functionalized with hydroxyl, carboxyl, and triazine groups and denoted as OH-COOH-MON-TEPT. A substantial proportion of OH-COOH-MON-TEPT was intricately decorated EDA-Fe 3 O 4 , creating a well-designed configuration (EDA-Fe 3 O 4 @OH-COOH-MON-TEPT-EDC) for superior adsorption of the target analytes phenylurea herbicides (PUHs) via magnetic solid-phase extraction (MSPE). The proposed method showed remarkably low limits of detection ranging from 0.03 to 0.22 ng·L −1 . Experimental investigations and theoretical analyses unveiled the adsorption mode between EDA-Fe 3 O 4 @OH-COOH-MON-TEPT-EDC and PUHs. These findings establish a robust foundation for potential applications of EDA-Fe 3 O 4 @OH-COOH-MON-TEPT-EDC in the analysis of various polar contaminants.

Abstract:The design and development of a facile synthesis approach to construct novel materials for the rapid adsorption and removal of environmental pollutants are of significant interest. In this work, we report the rational design and facile synthesis of magnetic core–shell-based microporous organic networks, Fe 3 O 4 @MON-TBPT-TEB (TTMON, achieved by reacting 2,4,6-tris( p -bromophenyl) triazine and 1,3,5-triethynylbenzene) and Fe 3 O 4 @MON-TBPM-DEBP (TDMON, achieved by reacting tetrakis (4-bromophenyl) methane and 4-4′-diethynylbiphenyl). These MONs possessed excellent dispersity, electrostatic attraction as well as plenty of π–π and hydrophobic interaction sites enabled them to efficiently absorb targeted environmental pollutants. TTMON and TDMON exhibited excellent adsorption capacities of 440 and 510 mg g −1 , respectively, at 25 °C for 2,4,6-trichlorophenol (TCP). TCP, 2,4-dichlorophenol (DCP), 2-naphthol (2-NT) and 4-nitrophenol (4-NP) from aqueous solution were treated by both MONs, followed by their analysis with high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). For TDMON, the proposed SPE-HPLC-UV method showed an LOD of 0.03 μg L −1 , LOQ of 0.11 μg L −1 , and a wide linear range of 1–1000 μg L −1 for TCP. The adsorption kinetics, thermodynamics, isotherms, effect of pH and humic acid (HA), ionic strength, regeneration, and reusability of the MONs were also studied. The results revealed that the novel-designed MONs have potential applications as efficient adsorbents in sample pretreatment.

Abstract:Herein, we report the fabrication of a novel, well-defined core-double-shell-structured magnetic Fe3O4@ microporous organic network (MON), Fe3O4@, for the efficient magnetic extraction of hydroxylated polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (OH-PAHs) and p-nitrophenol (p-Npn) from wastewater samples. The hierarchical nanospheres were designed and constructed with the Fe3O4 nanoparticle core, the inner shell of a polydopamine (PDA) layer, and the outer shell of a porous naphthyl MON (NMON) coating, allowing efficient and synergistic extraction of OH-PAHs and p-Npn via hydrophobic, hydrogen bonding, and π-π interactions. The Fe3O4@ nanospheres were well characterized and employed as an efficient sorbent for magnetic solid-phase extraction (MSPE) coupled with high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) for analyzing of OH-PAHs and p-Npn. Under optimal conditions, the Fe3O4@ method afforded wide linear range (0.18-500 μg L−1), low limits of detection (0.070 μg L−1 for p-Npn, 0.090 μg L−1 for 2-OH-Nap, 0.090 μg L−1 for 9-OH-Fluo and 0.055 μg L−1for 9-OH-Phe, respectively), large enrichment factors (92.6-98.4), good precisions (intra-day and inter-day relative standard deviations (RSDs); <6.4%, n=6) and less consumption of the adsorbent. Furthermore, trace OH-PAHs and p-Npn with concentrations of 0.29-0.80 μg L−1 were successfully detected in various wastewater samples. Fe3O4@ also functioned as a good adsorbent to enrich a wide scope of trace contaminants containing hydrogen bonding sites and aromatic structures, highlighting the potential of functional MONs in sample pretreatment.

Abstract:As an effective sample pretreatment approach, stir bar sorptive extraction (SBSE) has shown great prospects in static microextraction and selective enrichment. In this work, bifunctional microporous organic network (B-MON) with the coexistence of amino and hydroxyl groups was firstly designed and synthesized as a novel coating for efficient SBSE of parabens and flavors in combination with high-performance liquid chromatography coupled with photodiode array detection (HPLC-PDA). Linked by covalent bonds to form an extension of the aromatic ring skeleton, B-MON was a tailored adsorbent featured by porous structure and abundant hydrogen bonding sites for analytes with benzene/naphthalene rings and -OH/-COOH groups. The extraction and desorption parameters were evaluated in detail. Under the optimized conditions, the proposed B-MON-SBSE-HPLC-PDA method offered good linearity (0.10-100 μg L−1) with correlation coefficients R2 ≥ 0.995, low limits of detection (0.010-0.035 μg L−1) and limits of quantification (0.035-0.115 μg L−1), and favorable enrichment factors (40-49). Furthermore, the developed method has been applied to the analysis of parabens and flavors in cosmetic and food samples with recoveries ranging from 80.4 to 109.6%. This method was also feasible to extract the analytes with benzene/naphthalene rings and -OH/-COOH groups, such as the plant growth regulators and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs. The present study provided a new way to synthesize bifunctional MONs for SBSE of trace analytes in complex samples.

Abstract:Fabrication of novel coatings continues to be an area of great interest and significance in the development and application of stir bar sorptive extraction (SBSE). In this work, a carboxyl-enriched microporous organic network (MON-2COOH) coated stir bar was designed and fabricated as a novel adsorbent for efficient extraction of four phenylurea herbicides (PUHs) before their determination by high-performance liquid chromatography coupled with photodiode array detector (HPLC-PDA). The MON-2COOH was represented as an effective adsorbent for PUHs due to its large surface area, rigid porous structure, aromatic pore walls and the desired hydrogen bonding sites of introduced carboxyl groups. Variables affecting the SBSE of target analytes were optimized in detail. Under the optimal extraction conditions, favorable correlation coefficients (R2 > 0.996) in the linear range 0.10-250 μg L−1, low limits of detection (LODs, S/N=3) of 0.025-0.070 μg L−1 and good enrichment factors (46-49) were obtained. Besides, the proposed SBSE-HPLC-PDA method was successfully applied to determine trace PUHs in food and environmental water samples with recoveries in the range of 80.0-104.8% and the precisions (relative standard deviations, RSDs) lower than 9.9% (n=3). This work revealed the potential of MONs in SBSE of trace contaminants from environmental samples.

Abstract:Hydrophilic C18 monolithic polymer sorbents were synthesized for use in solid phase extraction (SPE) and in capillary liquid chromatography (LC). The approach involved incorporating both hydrophobic and hydrophilic monomers into a monolithic material, by copolymerization of stearyl methacrylate (SMA), poly(ethylene glycol) methyl ether methacrylate (PEGMEMA) and ethylene dimethacrylate (EDMA) in the presence of selected porogens, to produce translucent mesoporous monolithic materials in bulk (SPE) or white macroporous monoliths inside fused silica capillary columns (capillary LC). A capillary column containing one of the hydrophilic C18 monoliths (i.e. poly(SMA-co-PEGMEMA-co-EDMA) with 15% (w/w) PEGMEMA) demonstrated nearly 35% reduction in retention of polycyclic aromatic compounds and greater than 40% increase in retention of phenols compared to a hydrophobic C18 monolithic column. In addition, the hydrophilic monolith demonstrated significantly improved resolution of phenols. Similar monolithic materials prepared in bulk were ground and sieved to obtain 45-65 μm particles with desired rigidity for SPE. To achieve optimum extraction performance for phenols, several parameters, including sample pH and volume, and eluent type and volume, were investigated. Under optimized experimental conditions, the method demonstrated good sensitivity (1.6 ng/mL LOD) and linearity (R(2)>0.97 for 10-200 ng/mL). Again, incorporation of 15% (w/w) PEGMEMA in the monolith increased the extraction efficiency of phenols in water from approximately 20% to 67-92% compared to a hydrophobic C18 monolithic material. Increased wettability of the sorbent by the aqueous sample matrix and the presence of hydrogen-bonding interactions are responsible for the improved retention of polar compounds.

Abstract:A simple and facile needle-adapter was designed for constructing manual on-line polymer monolith microextraction-high performance liquid chromatography (PMME-HPLC). A capillary poly(4-vinylpyridine-co-ethylene glycol dimethacrylate) [poly(VP-co-EGDMA)] monolith was prepared by in situ polymerization, using 4-vinylpyridine (VP) and ethylene glycol dimethacrylate (EGDMA) as functional monomer and cross-linker, respectively. The synthesized monolith was used as the extraction medium for concentrating four EPA priority pollutants, 2-chlorophenol, 2,4-dichlorophenol, 2,4,6-trichlorophenol and pentachlorophenol, from water samples. The effect of the dosage of porogen polyethylene glycol 6000 (PEG) on back pressure and extraction performance of the capillary monolith was also investigated. Moreover, the influences of several parameters (such as extraction time, desorption time, content of MeOH in sample solution and sample pH) were examined to obtain the optimal PMME conditions. As a result, the established on-line PMME-HPLC protocol, with good extraction efficiency (80.6-91.7%), satisfactory recovery (94.7-106% and 76.8-86.3% for water and serum samples, respectively) and low detection limit (0.3-1.4 μg/L), exhibited potential applicability for the analysis of chlorophenols in environmental and biological samples.

Abstract:We theoretically study the properties of terahertz (THz) surface plasmon (SP) propagating on semiconductor and thin dielectric surfaces by employing numerical calculations. The results show that the major energy of THz SP can be confined in the thin film on the surface of an InSb semiconductor. At the same time, the magnetic field dispersion curves and absorption coefficients of the structures are studied. We find that the absorption coefficient is related to the permittivity of the dielectric films. Therefore, we can sensitively detect a thin dielectric sample by broadband terahertz spectroscopy.

Abstract:Development of novel functionalized adsorbents for efficient magnetic solid phase extraction (MSPE) is essential for promoting their versatile applications in sample pretreatment. Herein, we report the fabrication of a new polyethyleneimine-600 decorated magnetic microporous organic network nanosphere (Fe3O4@MON-PEI600) for effective MSPE of trace non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) from different water samples. The core-shelled Fe3O4@MON-PEI600 integrates the synergistic effects of Fe3O4, MON and PEI600, providing facile and effective extraction to NSAIDs via multiple hydrogen bonding, π-π and hydrophobic interactions. The inner MON shell employs π-π and hydrophobic interaction sites and the outer PEI-600 coat acts as the hydrogen bonding doner/receptor, which affords good extraction performance for NSAIDs. Under optimal conditions, the Fe3O4@MON-PEI600-MSPE-HPLC-UV method gives wide linear range (0.14-400 μg L-1), low limits of detection (0.042-0.149 μg L-1), good precisions (intra-day and inter-day RSDs < 4.5%, n=6), and large enrichment factors (97.0-98.2). Extraction mechanisms and selectivity of Fe3O4@MON-PEI600 are evaluated in detail. Moreover, Fe3O4@MON-PEI600 is successfully applied to enrich the trace NSAIDs in different water samples with the concentrations of 0.7 and 0.8 μg L-1 for 1-naphthylacetic acid, 0.5 and 0.1 μg L-1 for naproxen as well as 0.7 μg L-1 for ibuprofen, respectively. The developed method not only affords a novel and efficient magnetic adsorbent for NSAIDs in aqueous media at trace level, but also provides a new strategy for the rational design and synthesis of multiple functionalized MON composites in sample pretreatment.

Abstract:Hierarchical porous zeolitic imidazolate framework‐8 (HpZIF-8) have not only good chemical and thermal stability, but also pore structures of different sizes. In this work, HpZIF-8 supported hollow-fiber liquid-phase microextraction (HpZIF-8@HF-LPME) co-modified with tributyl phosphate and 2-nitroethyl benzene was firstly developed for purification and enrichment of nine typical phenolic pollutants followed by electrophoretic separation and amperometric detection (CE-AD). The key enrichment parameters were optimized by full factorial experimental and central composite designs. Under the optimum conditions, the maximum enrichment factors for the nine analytes were 479 (phenol), 249 (2-chlorophenol), 821 (4-chlorophenol), 1253 (3-methylphenol), 1376 (2,4-dichlorophenol), 1078 (2,4,6-trichlorophenol), 200 (pentachlorophenol), 614 (4-nitrophenol) and1827 times (bisphenol A), respectively. The limits of detection were 0.060–1.5 μg L −1 (S/ N = 3) in real sample matrixes. This proposed method has been successfully applied to water samples with high ionic strength, and the average recoveries were in the range of 80.2–118.0%. This developed method of HpZIF-8@HF-LPME/CE-AD needs no desorption and derivatization, providing an alternative for monitoring typical phenolic pollutants in water samples.

Effect of postmenopausal estrogen replacement on plasma Lp(a) lipoprotein concentrations.

Abstract:BACKGROUND Women who receive postmenopausal estrogen replacement experience a lower rate of coronary heart disease than women who do not receive these hormones. Evidence suggests that mechanisms in addition to decreases in plasma low-density lipoprotein levels and increases in high-density lipoprotein concentrations are responsible for the apparent beneficial effect of estrogens. Therefore, we studied the effect of estrogen on plasma Lp(a) lipoprotein, newly suggested to be a risk factor for coronary heart disease in postmenopausal women. METHODS The 31 healthy, normolipidemic subjects received placebo and conjugated equine estrogens (0.625 and 1.25 mg/d) for 3-month periods in a randomized, double-blind, crossover trial. RESULTS The mean Lp(a) lipoprotein concentration was 20.4 +/- 14.6 mg/dL during placebo treatment; it decreased by 14% (P < .01) with 0.625 mg of conjugated estrogens and by 16% (P < .005) with 1.25 mg. The Lp(a) lipoprotein concentration during placebo treatment was not significantly correlated with the responses to either dose of estrogen. There was no effect of estrogen on the plasma concentration of cholesterol ester transfer protein, suggesting that this protein is not involved in estrogen-induced changes in very-low-density lipoprotein or high-density lipoprotein concentrations and composition. CONCLUSIONS Estrogen decreases the plasma Lp(a) lipoprotein concentration, which could explain some of the protective effect of estrogen replacement therapy on coronary heart disease.
Toxic effects of glucagon-induced acute lipid mobilization in geese.

Abstract:The toxic effects associated with rapid lipid mobilization and a high plasma free fatty acid (FFA) concentration produced by glucagon were evaluated. Glucagon (0.5 mg/kg of body wt) was injected intravenously into nonfasting geese. The geese developed rapid respirations and high plasma FFA levels within 15 min after the glucagon injection; three of eleven died. Control geese, injected with saline, did not exhibit toxic signs. Peak FFA concentrations developed 15 min after glucagon and high levels persisted for over 90 min. Geese injected with glucagon frequently developed electrocardiographic abnormalities that included supraventricular tachycardia, premature ventricular contractions, and signs of myocardial ischemia. Light and electron microscopy revealed acute myocardial degeneration and fatty infiltration of the liver. The increase in plasma FFA concentrations and toxic effects were not prevented by pretreatment with nicotinic acid or propranolol.

Abstract:Amine-functionalized porous organic polymers (EDA-POP-PC and EDA-POP-BT) were prepared by post-modification of POP-PC and POP-BT with ethylenediamine (EDA) for the first time. The POP-PC and POP-BT were obtained through Friedel-Crafts acylation reaction of potassium tetraphenylborate with p -phthaloyl chloride (PC) and 1,3,5-benzenetricarbonyl trichloride (BT), respectively. The EDA-POPs exhibited superior adsorption capacity for phenolic endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs). After magnetically functionalization, the obtained M-EDA-POP-PC was employed as a magnetic adsorbent for enrichment of phenolic EDCs from real samples prior to high performance liquid chromatography-ultraviolet detection. The current strategy showed low detection limits (S/N=3) of 0.02-0.07, 0.04-0.08 and 0.04-0.10 ng mL −1 for river water, white peach juice and lychee juice, respectively. The method recoveries were 81.7 %-115 % with relative standard deviations below 8.6 %. The proposed strategy showed good practicality for sensitive determination of phenolic EDCs in real samples.

Abstract:In this study, a novel technique utilizing vortex-assisted dispersive liquid-liquid microextraction with magnetic deep eutectic solvents (MDESs) was established and coupled with HPLC-UV to analyze six primary aromatic amines (PAAs). A novel hydrophobic MDES prepared from trioctylphosphine oxide, octanol, and CoCl2 was used as the extractant, which could be dispersed uniformly during extraction, then floated onto the sample surface and re-aggregated into a single drop spontaneously after the extraction. The variables influencing the efficiency of the extraction process were investigated. When performing under the optimal extraction conditions, this method exhibited excellent linearity, low limits of detection (0.2-0.9 ng mL-1), and high precision (RSD ≤ 8.3 %). The enrichment factors ranged from 56 to 182. Satisfactory recoveries in the range of 91.6-109.2 % with RSDs < 7.1 % were obtained from three apple juices and three environmental water samples. The greenness and practicality of the developed method were assessed by AGREE, AGREEprep, and blue applicability grade index metric tools. Overall, the established procedure demonstrated its simplicity, speediness, environmental friendliness, and effectiveness in analyzing PAAs from aqueous matrices.

Abstract:High-efficiency monitoring of triazine herbicides residues is vital in the evaluation of environmental and agro-food safety. Herein, we fabricated a spherical hydroxylated microporous organic network (OH–MON) with high surface area, high stability and rich hydrogen-bonding affinity sites suitable as an advanced solid-phase extraction (SPE) adsorbent for efficient adsorption of triazine herbicides. Density–functional theory calculations and competitive enrichment tests confirmed that hydrogen bonding played a vital role to the enrichment of triazine herbicides by OH–MON. This OH–MON SPE cartridge showed satisfactory reproducibility, maintaining its adsorption capacity after 10 adsorption–desorption cycles. Furthermore, we developed a sensitive analytical approach for determining triazine herbicides residues in water and fruit juice samples. Desirable linear correlations within 0.50–250 ng⋅L-1, an ultra-low detection limit (0.03–0.15 ng⋅L-1 for water; 0.04–0.21 ng⋅L-1 for fruit juice), good precision and high enrichment factor for triazine herbicides were achieved. A preliminary practical application of the developed method was proved by the efficient detection of triazine herbicides in water and fruit samples with good recoveries (72.8%−100.4% and 72.0%−97.7% for water and juice samples, respectively). This study serves as a good reference for designing the high-functionalized MON to capture contaminants and address environmental and agro-food safety issues.

Abstract:The lack of functional groups or binding sites largely hindered the broad application of microporous organic networks (MONs). Herein, we report the fabrication of the sulfonate group-enriched magnetic MON composite (MMON-SO33Na) via the combination of the sulfonic acid group containing the monomer and thiol–yne click postmodification for efficient magnetic solid-phase extraction (MSPE) of benzimidazole fungicides (BZDs) from complex sample matrices. The well-defined core–shell-structured MMON-SO33Na was obtained and served as an advanced adsorbent for MSPE for concentrating and monitoring trace BZDs. The MMON-SO33Na with numerous sulfonate groups provides plenty of ion-exchange, hydrogen-bonding, and π–π sites, leading to the favorable affinity to BZDs via multiple interaction mechanisms. The MMON-SO33Na-based MSPE–high-performance liquid chromatography method afforded a wide linear range, low limits of detection, large enrichment factors, good precisions, and reusability for BZDs. Trace BZDs in complex vegetables and fruit samples were successfully detected by the established method. The MMON-SO33Na also exhibited good selectivity toward multiple types of polar contaminants containing hydrogen-bonding sites and aromatic structures. Abstract:In this work, a novel fluorinated magnetic microporous organic network (Fe3O4@FMON) was exquisitely designed and synthesized for highly efficient and selective magnetic solid phase extraction (MSPE) of fluorinated benzoylurea insecticides (BUs) from complex tea beverage samples. The Fe3O4@FMON exhibited good extraction for BUs via the pre-designed hydrophobic, π-π stacking, hydrogen bonding and specific FF interactions. A sensitive Fe3O4@FMON-based MSPE-HPLC-UV method with wide linear range (0.10-1000 μg L-1, R2 ≥ 0.996), low limits of detection (0.01-0.02 μg L-1), and large enrichment factors (85.6-98.0) for BUs from tea beverage samples was developed. By decorating F elements within MON's networks, the Fe3O4@FMON characterized good hydrophobicity and chemical stability, which could be reused at least 8 times without decrease of recoveries. This work demonstrated the great prospects of Fe3O4@FMON for enriching trace BUs from complex substrates and triggered the potential of FMON for sample pretreatment of fluorinated analytes.

Abstract:Selective enrichment of glycopeptides or phosphopeptides with great biological significance is essential for high-throughput mass spectrometry analysis. However, most previously reported methods only focused on enriching either glycopeptides or phosphopeptides rather than enriching them both. In this work, for the first time, a facile route was developed for the synthesis of polyamidoxime polymers with intrinsic hydrophilic skeletons and attractive long chain structure. The polyamidoxime materials (co-PAN) were synthesized from polyacrylonitrile (PAN) precursor and were successfully used for selective enrichment of glycopeptides. After that, co-PAN as a matrix functionalized with titanium ions (co-PAN@Ti4+) could efficiently enrich phosphopeptides. The performances of the polymers for sequential selective and effective enrichment of glycopeptides and phosphopeptides were evaluated with standard peptide mixtures and human serum. Moreover, the efficiency of enrichment of the material was still retained after being used repeatedly. These results demonstrated that the polymers showed great potential in the practical application of proteomics.
