Abstract:Background: Sulfonamide (SA) residues in food of animal origin possess a potential threat to human health and environment. However, due to the polar and ionic characteristics and trace level of SAs and the complexity of food matrices, direct measurement of SAs in these samples is still very difficult. Development of efficient sample pretreatment method for sensitive and selective extraction of trace SAs is of great significance and urgently desired. Therefore, rational design and synthesizing advanced and selective extractants is quite important. Results: In this work, a novel phenazine-based microporous organic network (MON) named TEPM-DP is reasonably synthesized and employed as a packing material for selective solid phase extraction (SPE) and sensitive determination of four typical SAs in milk samples. Phenazine-based monomer with aromatic and heteroaromatic ring and numerous N atoms is chosen to construct TEPM-DP adsorbent to provide π-π, hydrogen bonding, hydrophobic, and electrostatic extraction sites for SAs. The proposed method owns wide linear ranges, low limits of detection, high enrichment factors, and good precisions and recoveries for SAs in complex milk samples. The recoveries of SAs on TEPM-DP are much higher than those of commercial C18 and activated carbon. The extraction mechanisms are also elucidated via FT-IR, XPS, and comparative experiments. Significance: This work reports the first example of design and synthesizing phenazine-based MON in SPE via a simple and rapid solvothermal method. The results reveal the great prospects of TEPM-DP for enriching polar and ionic SAs in complex samples and uncover the potency of phenazine-based MON in sample pretreatment, which will promote the development of MON.
Preparation of cationic microporous organic network for efficient solid-phase extraction of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs from environmental water and milk samples

Abstract:The overuse of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) poses many serious environmental and food safety concerns. Development of effective and sensitive sample pretreatment method for monitoring trace NSAIDs from complex samples is of great significance. Depending on the ionic and aromatic structures of NSAIDs, a cationic microporous organic network (MON) named TEPM-BBDC with large specific surface area, good solvent and thermal stabilities, and numerous interaction sites was designed and prepared for efficient solid-phase extraction (SPE) of four typical NSAIDs (flurbiprofen, ketoprofen, naproxen, and diclofenac sodium) from environmental water and milk samples. By anchoring the ionic groups in the conjugated MON frameworks, the prepared TEPM-BBDC offered good extraction for NSAIDs based on the π-π, hydrophobic, ion exchange, and electrostatic interactions. Under the optimal extraction conditions (initial concentration of each NSAID: 200 g L-1; sample volume: 50 mL; desorption solvent: 1.5 mL of MeOH + 1 % NH3·H2O; sample loading rate: 5 mL min-1; NaCl concentration: 0 mmol L-1; pH = 5), the proposed TEPM-BBDC-SPE-HPLC-UV method owned wide linear range (0.50-1000 g L-1), low limits of detection (0.10-0.40 g L-1), large enrichment factors (92.2-99.2), good precisions (intra-day and inter-day, RSD% = 1.3-7.8 %, n = 6) and reproducibility (column-to-column, RSD% = 8.0 %, n = 3). The developed method also exhibited good recoveries (83.6-113.4 %) for the determination of NSAIDs in river water, lake water and milk samples. This work not only revealed the potential of TEPM-BBDC for SPE of ionic NSAIDs in complex samples, but also highlighted the prospect of ionic MONs in sample pretreatment.

Abstract:Background Sulfonamides (SAs) are a class of synthetic antibacterial agents that are diffusely used in the medical industry and animal husbandry. Their prevalence in the influents and effluents of water treatment plants, as well as in rivers and groundwater, has provoked worldwide concern. Monitoring SAs in environmental water is of great significance for public health. However, most of the available detection techniques for SAs are cumbersome and time-consuming. With the increasing number of actual samples, simple, fast and environmentally friendly analytical methods are always in demand. Results Herein, we describe a highly efficient micro-solid phase extraction (μ-SPE) sample preparation technique based on a novel thiol and ionic liquid bi-functional nanofibers membrane (IL-SH-PAN NFsM) for multi-residue detection of sulfonamides (SAs) in water samples. By the synergistic effect of -SH and -IL, the as-prepared IL-SH-PAN NFsM demonstrated high adsorption capacity and excellent selectivity for SAs. The water samples can be directly used for μ-SPE without pH and ionic strength adjustment, and the eluent can be directly collected for HPLC-MS/MS analysis. Compared with other methods reported in the literature, this method required much shorter extraction time (2 min for a batch), much less amount of adsorbent (4.0 mg) and organic solvent (0.5 mL), while providing much higher sensitivity (1.4–3.9 ng L −1 ), and fine recoveries (88.8%–117.7%) with relative standard deviations less than 4.26%. Significance and novelty A bi-functional nanofibers membrane was prepared for efficient extraction of SAs. The adsorbent exhibited superior adsorption performance and excellent selectivity. The underlying interaction mechanisms derived from -SH and -IL were proposed, which provide a new idea for preparing versatile adsorbents. Rapid, efficient and sensitive detection of SAs in water was achieved. The novel sample preparation technique can be expected as an efficient method for routine trace SAs residue monitoring in various water samples.

Abstract:Micro-solid phase extraction (μ-SPE) using surfactant coated silica for extraction and preconcentration of sulfonamide residues at trace levels in environmental water and honey samples prior their analysis by high performance liquid chronatography coupled with photodiode array detector (HPLC-PDA). The sample solution were dispersed in a small amounts of solid sorbent by vacuum manifold for sample preparation, and extraction occurred by adsorption in a short time. Finally, the analytes were subsequently desorbed using an appropriate solvent. The pure and coated silica were physicochemically and morphologically characterized by nittrogen (N 2 ) sorptions analyses, and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Parameters influencing extraction efficiency, such as amount of sorbent, kind, concentration and volume of surfactant, and kind and volume of desorption solvent, were investigated. The optimum conditions of the proposed method, were mixed standard/sample solution (10 mL), 0.4 g silica, 0.03 M CTAB (150 μL), and 500 μL methanol (as elution solvent). The proposed method, under optimal conditions, showed excellent linearity in different ranges (9–300 μg L −1 , the a coefficient of determination (R 2 ) of greater than 0.99), good repeatability (RSD < 6.72%), good sensitivity (LODs in the range of 1 to 3 μg L −1 ), high enrichment factor (5.63–13.33), and acceptable relative recoveries (61.0–121.4%). The developed μ-SPE method was applied to analyze sulfonamide residues in water and honey samples with relative recoveries of 60.9–119.4% were obtained. This alternative method is simple and is also environmentally friendly which assessed using Analytical Eco-scale and Analytical GREEnness metric (AGREE).

Abstract:The lack of functional groups or binding sites largely hindered the broad application of microporous organic networks (MONs). Herein, we report the fabrication of the sulfonate group-enriched magnetic MON composite (MMON-SO33Na) via the combination of the sulfonic acid group containing the monomer and thiol–yne click postmodification for efficient magnetic solid-phase extraction (MSPE) of benzimidazole fungicides (BZDs) from complex sample matrices. The well-defined core–shell-structured MMON-SO33Na was obtained and served as an advanced adsorbent for MSPE for concentrating and monitoring trace BZDs. The MMON-SO33Na with numerous sulfonate groups provides plenty of ion-exchange, hydrogen-bonding, and π–π sites, leading to the favorable affinity to BZDs via multiple interaction mechanisms. The MMON-SO33Na-based MSPE–high-performance liquid chromatography method afforded a wide linear range, low limits of detection, large enrichment factors, good precisions, and reusability for BZDs. Trace BZDs in complex vegetables and fruit samples were successfully detected by the established method. The MMON-SO33Na also exhibited good selectivity toward multiple types of polar contaminants containing hydrogen-bonding sites and aromatic structures. Abstract:Consuming foods with excess sulfonamide residues threatens human health, underscoring the importance of their detection in food. This study presents an innovative one-pot derivatization/magnetic solid-phase extraction (OPD/MSPE) method for sulfonamides analysis. This approach integrates the derivatization and extraction steps into a single process. The sample solution, along with the derivatization reagent fluorescamine and the sorbent magnetic hydroxyl multi-walled carbon nanotubes, is mixed and vortexed for 3 min. This procedure simultaneously conducts derivatization and extraction, with easy phase separation using an external magnet. This streamlined sample preparation method is completed in only 5 min and, when combined with liquid chromatography-fluorescence detection (LC-FLD), demonstrates excellent linearity (R2 > 0.99) and satisfactory detection limits (0.004-0.04 ng/g) for the quantification of nine sulfonamides in honey samples. The proposed OPD/MSPE-LC-FLD method is distinguished by its simplicity, rapidity, high sensitivity, and specificity, making it an outstanding advancement in the field of food safety analysis.

Abstract:As an effective sample pretreatment approach, stir bar sorptive extraction (SBSE) has shown great prospects in static microextraction and selective enrichment. In this work, bifunctional microporous organic network (B-MON) with the coexistence of amino and hydroxyl groups was firstly designed and synthesized as a novel coating for efficient SBSE of parabens and flavors in combination with high-performance liquid chromatography coupled with photodiode array detection (HPLC-PDA). Linked by covalent bonds to form an extension of the aromatic ring skeleton, B-MON was a tailored adsorbent featured by porous structure and abundant hydrogen bonding sites for analytes with benzene/naphthalene rings and -OH/-COOH groups. The extraction and desorption parameters were evaluated in detail. Under the optimized conditions, the proposed B-MON-SBSE-HPLC-PDA method offered good linearity (0.10-100 μg L−1) with correlation coefficients R2 ≥ 0.995, low limits of detection (0.010-0.035 μg L−1) and limits of quantification (0.035-0.115 μg L−1), and favorable enrichment factors (40-49). Furthermore, the developed method has been applied to the analysis of parabens and flavors in cosmetic and food samples with recoveries ranging from 80.4 to 109.6%. This method was also feasible to extract the analytes with benzene/naphthalene rings and -OH/-COOH groups, such as the plant growth regulators and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs. The present study provided a new way to synthesize bifunctional MONs for SBSE of trace analytes in complex samples.

Abstract:In this study, we designed a molecularly imprinted polymers-dispersive solid-phase extraction-high-performance liquid chromatography (MIPs-DSPE-HPLC) method, as a simple and efficient platform for the sensitive detection of two sulfonamide antibiotics (SAs) of sulfamethoxine (SMM) and sulfamethoxazole (SMZ) in environmental water samples. Using SMM and SMZ as templates, methacrylic acid as the functional monomer, ethylene glycol dimethacrylate as the crosslinking agent, and azodiisobutyronitrile as the catalyst, the dual-template molecularly imprinted polymers (dt-MIPs) were successfully synthesized via surface imprinting technology and multi-template imprinting strategy. The adsorption properties of the prepared MIPs were characterized, and the adsorption capacities of MIPs towards SMZ and SMM were 27.35 mg/g and 30.92 mg/g, respectively. The detection limits of the method in three environmental water samples were in the range of 0.23–1.74 μg/L, and the recoveries were between 82.7 and 110.3%, with relative standard deviations less than 5.93%. The construction process of this MIPs-DSPE-HPLC method is straightforward, exhibits high sensitivity and selectivity, and thus provides a versatile method for the quantification of SAs in complex matrices.

Abstract:We theoretically study the properties of terahertz (THz) surface plasmon (SP) propagating on semiconductor and thin dielectric surfaces by employing numerical calculations. The results show that the major energy of THz SP can be confined in the thin film on the surface of an InSb semiconductor. At the same time, the magnetic field dispersion curves and absorption coefficients of the structures are studied. We find that the absorption coefficient is related to the permittivity of the dielectric films. Therefore, we can sensitively detect a thin dielectric sample by broadband terahertz spectroscopy.

Abstract:A mesoporous silica Santa Barbara Amorphous-15 (SBA-15) has been first functionalized with 3-[2-(2-aminoethylamino)ethylamino]propyl-trimethoxysilane (a silane with three amines) and then reacted with an excess of phenyl glycidyl ether to generate a mixed-mode anion-exchanger containing both anion-exchange (three amines) and reversed-phase (multiple ether-linked phenyls) functionalities in a single branched ligand. The resulting material has been characterized by scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, nitrogen adsorption-desorption measurements, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, and elemental analysis. The results obtained indicated a BET specific surface area (SBET) of 362.5m2g-1, a pore volume of 0.70cm3g-1 with a narrow pore size distribution centered at 6.6nm, and carbon and nitrogen contents of 28.30% and 2.84%, respectively. The dimensions of these particles (∼5μm diameter, ∼60μm length), their large surface areas, their high-density functionalities and anion-exchange mixed-mode characteristics make them very attractive for highly effective solid phase extraction (SPE) of acidic nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). The important parameters on extraction efficiency including sample pH, breakthrough volume, type and volume of eluent were optimized. A simple and sensitive analytical method based on mixed-mode SPE coupled to high-performance liquid chromatography with ultraviolet detection (HPLC-UV) was developed and successfully applied to the analysis of four NSAIDs (ketoprofen, naproxen, diclofenac, and ibuprofen) in spiked real water samples with satisfactory recoveries (80.6-110.9%) and repeatability (relative standard deviation <11.3%, n=3). The limit of detections of four NSAIDs were 0.006-0.070μgL-1 for tap water, and 0.014-0.16μgL-1 for river water and wastewater, with the enrichment factors of 806-1109-fold.
Zr-based multivariate metal-organic framework for rapid extraction of sulfonamide antibiotics from water and food samples

Abstract:Based on multiple ligands strategy, a series of multivariate metal organic frameworks (MTV-MOFs) named as PCN-224-DCDPSx were prepared using one-pot solvothermal method to extract and remove sulfonamide antibiotics (SAs). The pore structure and adsorption performance can be further regulated by modulating the doping ratios of medium-tetra(4-carboxylphenyl) porphyrin and 4,4'-dicarboxydiphenyl sulfones. The MTV-MOFs of PCN-224-DCDPS1.0 possesses very large specific surface area (1625 m2/g). Using PCN-224-DCDPS1.0 as sorbent, a dispersive solid-phase extraction method was developed to extract and preconcentrate SAs from water, eggs, and milk prior to high performance liquid chromatography analysis. The limits of detection of method were determined between 0.17 and 0.27 ng/mL with enrichment factors ranging 214-327. The adsorption can be finished within 30 s, and the recovery rate remains above 80 % after 10 repeated uses. The adsorption capacities of sorbent were determined from 300 to 621 mg/g for sulfadiazine, sulphapyridine, sulfamethoxydiazine, sulfachlorpyridazine, sulfabenzamide, and sulfadimethoxine. The adsorption mechanisms were investigated and can be attributed to π-π interactions, hydrogen bonds, and electrostatic interactions. This work represents a method for preparation of MTV-MOFs and uses as sorbent for extraction and enrichment of trace pollutants from complex samples.
Hydroxyl group-enriched microporous organic network for high-performance solid-phase extraction of triazine herbicides: Experiment and DFT calculation on adsorption behavior

Abstract:High-efficiency monitoring of triazine herbicides residues is vital in the evaluation of environmental and agro-food safety. Herein, we fabricated a spherical hydroxylated microporous organic network (OH–MON) with high surface area, high stability and rich hydrogen-bonding affinity sites suitable as an advanced solid-phase extraction (SPE) adsorbent for efficient adsorption of triazine herbicides. Density–functional theory calculations and competitive enrichment tests confirmed that hydrogen bonding played a vital role to the enrichment of triazine herbicides by OH–MON. This OH–MON SPE cartridge showed satisfactory reproducibility, maintaining its adsorption capacity after 10 adsorption–desorption cycles. Furthermore, we developed a sensitive analytical approach for determining triazine herbicides residues in water and fruit juice samples. Desirable linear correlations within 0.50–250 ng⋅L-1, an ultra-low detection limit (0.03–0.15 ng⋅L-1 for water; 0.04–0.21 ng⋅L-1 for fruit juice), good precision and high enrichment factor for triazine herbicides were achieved. A preliminary practical application of the developed method was proved by the efficient detection of triazine herbicides in water and fruit samples with good recoveries (72.8%−100.4% and 72.0%−97.7% for water and juice samples, respectively). This study serves as a good reference for designing the high-functionalized MON to capture contaminants and address environmental and agro-food safety issues.

Abstract:A simple and sensitive method for the simultaneous extraction and determination of six aminoglycosides in honey and milk samples was developed using multiple monolithic fiber solid-phase microextraction and liquid chromatography with tandem mass spectrometry. Themultiple monolithic fibers based on poly(methacrylic acid-co-ethylenedimethacrylate) monolith as the extraction medium was used to concentrate target analytes. Because there were abundant carboxyl groups in the monolith, the monolithic fibers could extract aminoglycosides effectively through cation-exchange and hydrophobic interactions. To obtain optimum extraction performance, several extraction parameters including desorption solvent, adsorption and desorption time, pH value and ionic strength in sample matrix, were investigated in detail. Under the optimized extraction conditions, the limits of detection of the proposed method were 0.10-0.30 and 0.23-0.59 mu g/kg for honey and milk samples, respectively. Satisfactory linearity was achieved for analytes with the coefficients of determination above 0.99. At the same time, the developed method showed acceptable method repeatability and reproducibility. Finally, the proposed method was successfully applied to the determination of aminoglycosides in real honey and milk samples. Recoveries obtained for the determination of six target analytes in spiking samples ranged from 67.9 to 110%, and the relative standard deviations were in the range of 1.2-11%.

Abstract:Porous electrospun nanofibers, as new materials for solid-phase extraction, were synthesized by electrospinning and coupled with ultra high performance liquid chromatography and mass spectrometry to determine sulfonamide residues in environmental water. Aligned porous polystyrene electrospun nanofibers were fabricated under the mechanism of phase separation. The high-specific surface of these nanofibers (70 m(2)/g) could improve recoveries of the target sulfonamides 4-10 times compared with that of polystyrene nonporous material (3.8 m(2)/g). Under the optimized conditions, 13 sulfonamide residues showed an excellent linear relationship in the range of 0.125-12.5 ng/mL with a linear correlation coefficient (r(2)) greater than 0.99, and the detection limits of sulfonamides were as low as 0.80-5.0 ng/L. Compared to the commercial C18 and HLB columns, the homemade porous nanofibers columns had some merits including simple fabrication and extraction process, short process time and environmental friendliness. The optimized method was applied to eight water samples collected from different livestock farms (Xuzhou, China). The results showed that polystyrene porous nanofibers were promising to preconcentrate sulfonamides of different polarities in the waste water.

Abstract:Due to serious risk to human health and eco-environmental security, antibiotics in water and foods received considerable concern. Herein, a series of stable hierarchically porous zirconium-based metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) namely HP-NU-902-X were prepared via modulator-induced defect-guided formation strategy for the first time and functioned as sorbents to removal and preconcentration of sulfonamide antibiotics (SAs). The pore size and specific surface area of HP-NU-902-X were systematically adjusted by changing concentration of monocarboxylic acid modulator. The adsorption performance of HP-NU-902-X were greatly improved by forming defects. Experiments demonstrated that HP-NU-902-80 possessed the highest adsorption efficiency to SAs. The limits of detection (S/N=3) were achieved ranging 0.08 to 0.25 ng/mL. The spiked recoveries of water and milk samples were obtained in the range of 70.34-103.4% and 73.83-100.5%. Enrichment factors were calculated between 203 and 358. The SAs can be completely removed within 10 min, and adsorption kinetic data was best consistent with pseudo-second-order model. Using Langmuir isotherm model, maximum adsorption capacities for sulfadiazine, sulfapyridine, sulfametoxydiazine, sulfachloropyridazine, sulfabenzamide and sulfamethazine were calculated as 279.9, 467.7, 414.4, 433.1, 415.5 and 336.6 mg/g, respectively. The improved adsorption capacity was mainly owing to high surface area and extra defect sites. This synthetic strategy provides a way to prepare stable defective MOFs and enhance their potential applications in removal and extraction of environmental pollutants.

Abstract:We have described a sulfonamide-selective ambient ion source coupled with electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (ESI-MS) for selective extraction and determination of trace sulfonamide antibiotics. It is obtained by modifying an iron sheet with a sulfadiazine-templated hydrophilic molecularly imprinted polymer (SF-HMIP). It behaves as both an online extractor and a MS ion source. Five sulfonamide antibiotics, including sulfamethoxazole (SMZ), sulfamerazine (SMR), sulfisoxazole (SIZ), sulfathiazole (ST), and sulfameter (SMD), were chosen to evaluate SF-HMIP coupled with ESI-MS, which showed good linearity in the range of 0.2-1000 ng/mL with correlation coefficient values (R2) over 0.9946. The limits of detection (LODs) for analysis of pure water and honey were in the range of 0.1-0.2 and 0.2-1.5 ng/mL, respectively. Limits of quantitation (LOQs) for analysis of pure water and honey were in the range of 0.3-0.5 and 1.0-5.0 ng/mL, respectively. The results demonstrated that SF-HMIP combined with ESI-MS could be applied for the direct analysis of five trace sulfonamide compounds in honey and pure water with recoveries ranging from 76 to 129%.
Fabrication of polyethyleneimine modified magnetic microporous organic network nanosphere for efficient enrichment of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs from wastewater samples prior to HPLC-UV analysis

Abstract:Development of novel functionalized adsorbents for efficient magnetic solid phase extraction (MSPE) is essential for promoting their versatile applications in sample pretreatment. Herein, we report the fabrication of a new polyethyleneimine-600 decorated magnetic microporous organic network nanosphere (Fe3O4@MON-PEI600) for effective MSPE of trace non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) from different water samples. The core-shelled Fe3O4@MON-PEI600 integrates the synergistic effects of Fe3O4, MON and PEI600, providing facile and effective extraction to NSAIDs via multiple hydrogen bonding, π-π and hydrophobic interactions. The inner MON shell employs π-π and hydrophobic interaction sites and the outer PEI-600 coat acts as the hydrogen bonding doner/receptor, which affords good extraction performance for NSAIDs. Under optimal conditions, the Fe3O4@MON-PEI600-MSPE-HPLC-UV method gives wide linear range (0.14-400 μg L-1), low limits of detection (0.042-0.149 μg L-1), good precisions (intra-day and inter-day RSDs < 4.5%, n=6), and large enrichment factors (97.0-98.2). Extraction mechanisms and selectivity of Fe3O4@MON-PEI600 are evaluated in detail. Moreover, Fe3O4@MON-PEI600 is successfully applied to enrich the trace NSAIDs in different water samples with the concentrations of 0.7 and 0.8 μg L-1 for 1-naphthylacetic acid, 0.5 and 0.1 μg L-1 for naproxen as well as 0.7 μg L-1 for ibuprofen, respectively. The developed method not only affords a novel and efficient magnetic adsorbent for NSAIDs in aqueous media at trace level, but also provides a new strategy for the rational design and synthesis of multiple functionalized MON composites in sample pretreatment.

Abstract:The design and development of a facile synthesis approach to construct novel materials for the rapid adsorption and removal of environmental pollutants are of significant interest. In this work, we report the rational design and facile synthesis of magnetic core–shell-based microporous organic networks, Fe 3 O 4 @MON-TBPT-TEB (TTMON, achieved by reacting 2,4,6-tris( p -bromophenyl) triazine and 1,3,5-triethynylbenzene) and Fe 3 O 4 @MON-TBPM-DEBP (TDMON, achieved by reacting tetrakis (4-bromophenyl) methane and 4-4′-diethynylbiphenyl). These MONs possessed excellent dispersity, electrostatic attraction as well as plenty of π–π and hydrophobic interaction sites enabled them to efficiently absorb targeted environmental pollutants. TTMON and TDMON exhibited excellent adsorption capacities of 440 and 510 mg g −1 , respectively, at 25 °C for 2,4,6-trichlorophenol (TCP). TCP, 2,4-dichlorophenol (DCP), 2-naphthol (2-NT) and 4-nitrophenol (4-NP) from aqueous solution were treated by both MONs, followed by their analysis with high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). For TDMON, the proposed SPE-HPLC-UV method showed an LOD of 0.03 μg L −1 , LOQ of 0.11 μg L −1 , and a wide linear range of 1–1000 μg L −1 for TCP. The adsorption kinetics, thermodynamics, isotherms, effect of pH and humic acid (HA), ionic strength, regeneration, and reusability of the MONs were also studied. The results revealed that the novel-designed MONs have potential applications as efficient adsorbents in sample pretreatment.

Abstract:Microporous organic networks (MONs) are a potential class of microporous materials in analytical chemistry. As great efforts have been made in sample pretreatment and gas chromatography, the application of MONs in high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) has largely lagged and has never been investigated. In addition, directly packing of MONs into columns for HPLC is impractical due to the high column pressure and low column efficiency resulted from the sub-micron sized and irregular MONs. To solve these issues and uncover the possibility of MONs in HPLC, here we report the fabrication of spherical silica amino-functionalized MON (SiO2@MON-NH2) composite as a novel stationary phase for HPLC. Neutral, acidic and alkaline probes were evaluated on SiO2@MON-NH2 packed column. A column efficiency of 21,246 plates per meter was obtained for n-propylbenzene. The results revealed the hydrophobic interaction was the main separation mechanism on SiO2@MON-NH2 packed column. Baseline separation of benzenediol, dichlorophenol, chlorophenol and phenylenediamine position isomers, deoxynucleosides and nucleosides was also achieved on SiO2@MON-NH2 packed column. The relative standard deviations of retention time, peak height and peak area for the studied position isomers, deoxynucleosides and nucleosides were 0.2-0.7%, 0.3-3.7% and 1.7-3.5%, respectively. The SiO2@MON-NH2 packed column also offered better resolution for dichlorophenol isomers, deoxynucleosides and nucleosides than SiO2-NH2 and commercial C18 columns. These results revealed the potential of MONs in HPLC and also provided a new way for the use of nano-sized or irregular MONs in HPLC.
