Abstract:High-performance extraction of polar phenols from aqueous samples is challenging because of their hydrophilicity, extremely low concentration, and complicated matrices. Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) are new types of porous organic materials. In this work, spherical TPB-DMTP-COF was fabricated via a simple room-temperature solution-phase approach. The material exhibited high acid/base stability, remarkable thermostability, high crystallinity, and large surface area of 1560 m(2) g(-1) and thus could be an excellent coating for solid-phase microextraction (SPME) of phenols. This coating provided superior adsorption affinity toward phenols over commercial coatings. TPB-DMTP-coated fiber showed high enhancement factors (EFs, 1741-4265), and EFs increased with the number of chlorine or methyl substituents and high hydrophobicity of phenols. Hence, the strong adsorption affinity could be derived from hydrophobic and steric hindrance effects together with pi-pi affinity, H-bonding, van der Waals forces, and size-matching effect. The proposed approach based on TPB-DMTP-COF-coated fiber and gas chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry achieved low limits of detection (0.0048-0.015 ng L-1), wide linearity (0.05-1000 ng L-1), good precision (< 8.87%), and reproducibility ( < 10.0%). The actual amounts of phenols ranged from 0.6 ng L-1 to 22.7 ng L-1 in underground water and reservoir water. The satisfactory recoveries (81.3-116.3%) for simultaneous analysis of five phenols were obtained. Therefore, TPB-DMTP-COF coating could be an excellent alternative for sensitive analysis of phenols at ultra-trace level in complex samples.

Abstract:Poly (methylphenylvinylsiloxane) (PMPVS) coating for solid-phase microextraction (SPME) was first prepared by using sol-gel approach and cross-linking of free radical initiation. The extraction properties of the novel coating for aromatic compounds were investigated using a self-made SPME device coupled with a gas chromatograph-flame ionization detector (GC-FID). The coating provided high surface areas and allowed high extraction efficiency. Compared with some commercial SPME stationary phases, the new phase showed better selectivity and sensitivity toward aromatic compounds. Furthermore, PMPVS coating showed good thermal stability and longer lifetime.
Polyphenylene Core-Conjugated Microporous Polymer Coating for Highly Sensitive Solid-Phase Microextraction of Polar Phenol Compounds in Water Samples.

Abstract:The high performance separation and pre-concentration of polar phenols from aqueous matrices is difficult because of the strong interactions between phenols and water molecules. Conjugated microporous polymers (CMPs) are a kind of novel porous organic materials. Polyphenylene core-conjugated microporous polymers (PPc-CMPs) were used as a novel coating material in the solid-phase microextraction of polar phenols in water samples for the first time. The novel PPc-CMPs fibers exhibited good thermal stability (>450 °C), high enrichment factors (519-2372), low limits of detection (0.02-0.05 ng L-1), wide linearity (0.1-1000 ng L-1), and good repeatability (2.5%-8.1%) for polar phenols. The new coating was successfully used in the analysis of phenols in real environmental water samples. PPc-CMPs as a polar solid-phase microextraction coating material was excellent for the rapid and sensitive analysis of phenols at trace levels in the environment.
Trifluoroacetic acid modified MOF-808 composite coating for solid-phase microextraction of six phenols followed by gas chromatography analysis

Abstract:The development of adsorption materials with good stability and high efficiency is significant in solid-phase microextraction (SPME). In this work, metal–organic framework MOF-808 (Zr) was modified by trifluoroacetic acid (TFA) to improve its hydrophobicity. MOF-808-TFA was electrochemically deposited on stainless steel wire with poly (3, 4-ethylenedioxthiophene) (PEDOT) to increase its extraction efficiency. The main parameters in the synthesis and extraction procedure were optimized. The prepared MOF-808-TFA@PEDOT nanocomposite coating was characterized by scanning electron microscopy, energy dispersive spectrometer, X-ray diffraction, Fourier transform infrared spectrometry and thermogravimetric analysis. A direct immersion solid-phase microextraction (DI-SPME) method for six phenols was developed based on the nanocomposite coating which had good service life (150 times). The extraction efficiency was 12 times higher than the commercial PDMS coating. Combined with gas chromatography-flame ionization detector (GC-FID), a simultaneous determination method for the six phenols was established, which exhibited wide linear range with 0.05–50 μg L −1 ( R 2 > 0.99). The limit of detection was 0.01–0.08 μg L −1 (S/N = 3), and the limit of quantification was 0.05–0.25 μg L −1 . The method was applied to determine the migration quantity of phenols from four metal cans with recovery rate between 85.6–116.8 % (RSD < 13.9 %), and it was verified by standard GC–MS method and SPSS statistical analysis. These results indicated the DI-SPME-GC-FID method had reliability and potential application in security testing for food contact materials.

Abstract:A solid-phase microextraction (SPME) fiber based on a new polymeric ionic liquid was prepared for the extraction of trace aromatic amines in water and their detection by gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (GC–MS). The newly designed polymeric ionic liquid with two functional groups (benzene ring and ether group) was synthesized and fixed on stainless steel wire to effectively extract aromatic amines. Parameters that affect the extraction efficiency of the SPME fiber (extraction temperature, extraction time, alkali concentration, and salt concentration) were optimized to establish a headspace SPME–GC–MS method. The correlation coefficients were 0.996 or greater for concentration of the aromatic amines ranging from 0.01 to 10 μg mL-1. In addition, the limits of detection for the new fiber are as low as 0.67 ng mL-1, which is lower than that obtained with polyacrylate. The relative standard deviations of five consecutive extractions for the solution spiked at 1 μg mL-1 by the same fiber were all below 8.3%, and the interfiber relative standard deviations for the solution spiked at the same concentration ranged from 8.9% to 15.2%. Furthermore, long lifetime and good solvent resistance are exhibited by the fiber. Finally, satisfactory relative recovery in the range from 85.3% to 101.9 % was achieved for two environmental water samples.

Abstract:The development of a straightforward method for preparing high-performing solid-phase microextraction (SPME) coatings is of paramount importance. In this work, inspired by architectural engineering, a simple and rapid synthetic strategy was developed to grow covalent organic frameworks (COFs) in situ on the surface of stainless steel wire as the SPME coating. Subsequently, the COF-coated fiber was applied for the extraction of phenols. Due to the avoidance of using any binder, the porous structure of COFs was well preserved, leading to a superior extraction performance, surpassing physically adhered COF coatings and commercial polyacrylate coatings. Combined with gas chromatography-mass spectrometry, an efficient and sensitive analytical method for the quantification of phenols was established with high enhancement factors (11080–58762), wide linear ranges (2–10000 ng·L−1), low limits of detection (0.39–0.72 ng·L−1), and good repeatability (RSD, ≤7.9%). Moreover, the feasibility of the established method was demonstrated by the determination of target phenols in certified reference materials (water and soil) with satisfactory results. The proposed in situ preparation method provides a easy and efficient approach to prepare high-performance COF-coated fiber for the efficient SPME of trace phenols from complex matrices in practical samples.

Abstract:A solid-phasemicroextraction (SPME) fiber coatedwith poly(methacrylic acid-ethylene glycol dimethacrylate) coupled to GC with a micro electron-capture detector was developed for the determination of four chlorphenols in water samples for the first time. A novel and simple method for the preparation of this novel SPME fiber was proposed by copolymerization of methacrylic acid and ethylene glycol dimethacrylate in an appropriate solvent using a glass capillary as a "mold". The factors affecting the polymerization were optimized in detail. Furthermore, the extraction performance of the poly(methacrylic acid-ethylene glycol dimethacrylate) fiber was evaluated. Moreover, experimental headspace-SPME parameters, such as extraction temperature, extraction time, salt concentration, stirring speed, and pH, were optimized by orthogonal array experimental designs. Under the optimized conditions, the target analytes were linear in the range of 0.2-50 ng/mL, and the correlation coefficients were all greater than 0.99. RSD was less than 8.9%, and the detection limits were in the range of 0.1-10 ng/L. Four cholorphenols were detected from tap and lake water samples using the proposed method, with the recoveries of spiked natural water samples were ranged from 91.8 to 110.8, and 90.6 to 111.4% for tap and lake water samples, respectively.
Preparation and evaluation of hydrophilic C18 monolithic sorbents for enhanced polar compound retention in liquid chromatography and solid phase extraction

Abstract:Hydrophilic C18 monolithic polymer sorbents were synthesized for use in solid phase extraction (SPE) and in capillary liquid chromatography (LC). The approach involved incorporating both hydrophobic and hydrophilic monomers into a monolithic material, by copolymerization of stearyl methacrylate (SMA), poly(ethylene glycol) methyl ether methacrylate (PEGMEMA) and ethylene dimethacrylate (EDMA) in the presence of selected porogens, to produce translucent mesoporous monolithic materials in bulk (SPE) or white macroporous monoliths inside fused silica capillary columns (capillary LC). A capillary column containing one of the hydrophilic C18 monoliths (i.e. poly(SMA-co-PEGMEMA-co-EDMA) with 15% (w/w) PEGMEMA) demonstrated nearly 35% reduction in retention of polycyclic aromatic compounds and greater than 40% increase in retention of phenols compared to a hydrophobic C18 monolithic column. In addition, the hydrophilic monolith demonstrated significantly improved resolution of phenols. Similar monolithic materials prepared in bulk were ground and sieved to obtain 45-65 μm particles with desired rigidity for SPE. To achieve optimum extraction performance for phenols, several parameters, including sample pH and volume, and eluent type and volume, were investigated. Under optimized experimental conditions, the method demonstrated good sensitivity (1.6 ng/mL LOD) and linearity (R(2)>0.97 for 10-200 ng/mL). Again, incorporation of 15% (w/w) PEGMEMA in the monolith increased the extraction efficiency of phenols in water from approximately 20% to 67-92% compared to a hydrophobic C18 monolithic material. Increased wettability of the sorbent by the aqueous sample matrix and the presence of hydrogen-bonding interactions are responsible for the improved retention of polar compounds.

Abstract:An innovative solid-phase microextraction (SPME) fiber coating, melamine-formaldehyde resin (MFR), was synthesized with a green cross-linker, paraformaldehyde, and exhibited high heat resistance (up to 350 °C). Seven polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) were chosen as analytes, and the results demonstrated the MFR-based SPME fiber's exceptional enrichment capabilities and efficient extraction, with high enrichment factors and significantly improved efficiency compared to the conventional polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) fibers. The unique superiority of MFR was attributed to its strong π-π interaction and amino-associated enhancement, as well as its porous structure and rough surface, which provided abundant adsorption sites and facilitated rapid mass transport of analytes. Furthermore, the preparation conditions of the MFR-coated SPME fiber were compared with commercially available and reported fibers, emphasizing the advantages of the MFR-coated fiber, such as its simplicity, cost-effectiveness, reproducibility, and eco-friendliness. The MFR-based SPME fiber exhibited significant advantages, including high enrichment factors (ranging from 1906 to 7153 folds) for PAHs and good fiber-to-fiber reproducibility (8.7–14.6%), outperforming commercially available PDMS fibers by a factor of 4.9–82.8 folds. This study also considered important factors affecting the extraction process, such as ionic strength, temperature, and time, and optimized these parameters for the best extraction efficiency. The greenness of the developed method was assessed using Analytical Eco-Scale, and the results found that it was green in terms of regent dosage, energy consumption, and waste. The developed headspace solid phase microextraction-gas chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (HS-SPME-GC-MS/MS) method based on the MFR coating exhibited excellent precision, accuracy, and repeatability, making it a reliable tool for the determination of trace PAHs in environmental water samples.

Polythiophene As a Novel Fiber Coating for Solid-Phase Microextraction

Abstract:The efficiency of polythiophene (PTh) was investigated as a new fiber for solid-phase microextraction (SPME). The PTh film was directly electrodeposited on the surface of a stainless steel wire in boron trifluoride diethyl etherate (BFEE) solution using cyclic voltammetry (CV) technique. PTh fibers were used for the extraction of some organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) from water samples. The extracted analytes were transferred to an injection port of gas chromatography using a laboratory-designed SPME device. The results obtained prove the ability of PTh material as a new fiber for sampling of organic compounds from water samples. This behavior is due most probably to the granulated surface of PTh film, which produces large surface areas. In this work, the optimum conditions for the preparation and conditioning of fibers and the extraction of analytes from water samples were obtained. In the optimum conditions, the limit of detection of the proposed method is 0.5-10 ng L(-1) for analysis of OCPs from aqueous samples, and the calibration graphs were linear in a concentration range of 10-10,000 ng L(-1) (R(2)>0.982) for most of organochlorine pesticides. Single fiber repeatability and fiber-to-fiber reproducibility were less than 12 and 18% (n=5), respectively. The PTh fiber was used to monitor the OCPs in real water samples, and the results compared favorably with the data determined by commercially available carbowax/divinylbenzene (CW/DVB) fiber.
Rapidly covalent immobilization of β-ketoenamine-linked covalent organic framework on fibers for efficient solid-phase microextraction of phthalic acid esters

Abstract:Rapid and convenient preparation of covalent organic framework (COF) coated fibers is of great significance to solid-phase microextraction (SPME) technology. In this work, a novel chemical preparation strategy was established for rapid fabrication of β-ketoenamine-linked COF coatings, in which clay-like starting materials of COFs were first wrapped on the fiber surface through self-viscosity and further fixed on the fiber in an oven via chemical bonding. Based on this strategy, four different COF (TpTph, TpPa-1, TpBD and TpTpb) coated fibers was fabricated within 1 hour, which is very rapid compared to the recently reported research. Moreover, the strategy also demonstrates the good general applicability for COF fiber preparation. Subsequently, the TpTph coated fiber was used to develop a new SPME method for gas chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (GC-MS/MS) of trace phthalic acid esters (PAEs) in environmental water. The developed analytical method compared to the previous SPME methods for PAEs based on other sorbents possesses low limits of detection (LODs, 0.02–0.08 ng L−1), and better or comparable precision (RSD ≤9.4%, n = 6), and relatively short extraction time. Furthermore, the trace PAEs (0.27–11.62 ng L−1) in the real water samples were successfully detected with recoveries of 82.2–117.5%. The above results indicates that the proposed fiber preparation strategy is reliable and opens a potential avenue for rapid and facile fabrication of COF coated fibers.

Abstract:A novel carbon nanoparticles-coated solid-phase microextraction (SPME) fiber was prepared via a simple and low-cost flame-based preparation process, with stainless steel wire as support. Surface characteristic of the fiber was studied with scanning electron microscope. A nano-scaled brushy structure was observed. Coupled to gas chromatography (GC), the fiber was used to extract phthalate esters (PAEs) and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in aqueous samples. Analytical performances of the proposed method were investigated under the optimum extraction conditions (extraction temperature, 40°C; content of KCl, 30% (w/v); extraction time, 50min for PAEs and 40min for PAHs) and compared with other reports for the same analytes. Calibration ranges were 0.06-500μgL(-1) for di-n-butyl phthalate (DBP), and 0.1-300μgL(-1) for di-cyclohexyl phthalate (DCHP) and di-(2-ethyl-hexyl) phthalate (DEHP). For the eight PAHs, good linearity was obtained ranging from 0.01 to 150μgL(-1). Limits of detection were 0.005μgL(-1) for three PAEs and 0.001-0.003μgL(-1) for eight PAHs. The fiber exhibited excellent stability. It can be used for 100 times with RSDs of extraction efficiency less than 22.4%. The as-established SPME-GC method was applied to determine PAEs in food-wrap and PAHs in cigarette ash and snow water, and satisfactory results were obtained. The carbon nanoparticles-coated SPME fiber was efficient for sampling of organic compounds from aqueous samples.

Abstract:A high pressure liquid chromatographic method has been developed for determining aflatoxins B1, B2, G1, and G2 in peanut butter. The method is based on extraction with acidified aqueous methanol, partition of the aflatoxin into methylene chloride, and purification of the extract on a 2 g silica gel column. The extracted aflatoxins are resolved on a microparticulate (10 micrometer) porous silica gel column in ca 10 min with a water-washed chloroform-cyclohexane-acetonitrile solvent that contains 2% isopropanol. The fluorescence detection system determines aflatoxins B1, B2, G1, and G2 at low levels, i.e., 0.25 ppb B1, 0.5 ppb G1, and 0.2 ppb B2 and G2. Multiple assays of 5 samples of naturally contaminated peanut butters containing total aflatoxins (B1 + B2 + G1 + G2) at levels of 1, 2, 3, 9, and 17 ppb gave intralaboratory coefficients of variation of 7, 4, 4, 11, and 3%, respectively. Samples spiked at levels of 5, 9, and 17 ppb total aflatoxins showed recoveries of 79, 81, and 81%, respectively.
An Imine-Based Porous 3D Covalent Organic Polymer as a New Sorbent for the Solid-Phase Extraction of Amphenicols from Water Sample

Abstract:In this paper, an imine-based porous 3D covalent organic polymer (COP) was synthesized via solvothermal condensation. The structure of the 3D COP was fully characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, and powder X-ray diffractometry, thermogravimetric analysis, and Brunauer–Emmer–Teller (BET) nitrogen adsorption. This porous 3D COP was used as a new sorbent for the solid-phase extraction (SPE) of amphenicol drugs, including chloramphenicol (CAP), thiamphenicol (TAP), and florfenicol (FF) in aqueous solution. Factors were investigated for their effects on the SPE efficiency, including the types and volume of eluent, washing speed, pH, and salinity of water. Under the optimized conditions, this method gave a wide linear range (0.1–200 ng/mL) with a high correlation coefficient value (R2 > 0.99), low limits of detection (LODs, 0.01–0.03 ng/mL), and low limits of quantification (LOQs, 0.04–0.10 ng/mL). The recoveries ranged from 83.98% to 110.7% with RSDs ≤ 7.02%. The good enrichment performance for this porous 3D COP might contribute to the hydrophobic and π–π interactions, the size-matching effect, hydrogen bonding, and the good chemical stability of 3D COP. This 3D COP-SPE method provides a promising approach to selectively extract trace amounts of CAP, TAP, and FF in environmental water samples in ng quantities.

Abstract:The solid phase microextraction (SPME) technique has been widely applied in the detection of trace compounds in food, environment, and medicine due to its advantages of easy quantification, simple operation, and greenness. Herein, a templating strategy with SiO 2 nanofibers (SiO 2 NFs) is reported to synthesize hierarchical covalent organic framework hollow nanofibers (COF HNFs)-coated stainless steel fiber for SPME application with dramatically enhanced enrichment performance for trace analytes. The construction of hierarchical porosity inside the microextraction coatings can not only increase the specific surface area of COF extraction materials for obtaining more abundant adsorption sites but also greatly improve the accessibility of internal COF micropores. Moreover, the thicknesses of the microextraction COF coatings can be facilely tailored by adjusting the amount of SiO 2 NFs pre-assembled on the SPME fibers. On the headspace solid phase microextraction (HS-SPME) of antimicrobial residues, the developed COF TpBD-Me 2 HNFs-12 fibers achieve enrichment factors of 2026 and 1823 for thymol and carvacrol respectively, which are significantly higher than those obtained from the counterpart COF TpBD-Me 2 -bonded fiber (8.5–8.2 times) and commercial CAR/PDMS fiber (3.3–4.4 times). Furthermore, the developed method was demonstrated to have wide linearity (0.1–50 μg L -1 ), low limits of detection (0.010 μg L -1 ), good thermal stability and excellent reusability (>60 recycles), demonstrating great application potential in the extraction of trace organic pollutants. The strategy developed in this work is applicable to preparing a variety of topological COF (e.g., TpBD, TpPa-1) HNFs-bonded fibers.

Abstract:A porous and highly efficient polyaniline-based solid-phase microextraction (SPME) coating was successfully prepared by the electrochemical deposition method. A method based on headspace SPME followed by HPLC was established to rapidly determine trace chlorophenols in water samples. Influential parameters for the SPME, including extraction mode, extraction temperature and time, pH and ionic strength procedures, were investigated intensively. Under the optimized conditions, the proposed method was linear in the range of 0.5-200 μg/L for 4-chlorophenol and 2,4,6-trichlorophenol, 0.2-200 μg/L for 2,4-dichlorophenol and 2-200 μg/L for 2,3,4,6-tetrachlorophenol and pentachlorophenol, with satisfactory correlation coefficients (>0.99). RSDs were <15% (n = 5) and LODs were relatively low (0.10-0.50 μg/L). Compared to commercial 85 μm polyacrylate and 60 μm polydimethylsiloxane/divinylbenzene fibers, the homemade polyaniline fiber showed a higher extraction efficiency. The proposed method has been successfully applied to the determination of chlorophenols in water samples with satisfactory recoveries.

Abstract:During the process of treating a complicated gunshot wound of an upper limb, chest, abdomen, and spine, there appeared--sometime after the initial treatment--a necrosis of the right hepatic duct in the bullet path within the liver. Although laparotomy was the life-saving operation during the first and second period, the final diagnosis and solution were based on bypassing the defect, i.e., a combination of a percutaneous and endoscopic approach. The efficiency of this method was also proved by an examination carried out 1 year after the end of the treatment.

Abstract:Efficient enrichment of trace organic phosphate ester (OPEs) pollutants from complex matrixes is essential for chromatographic analysis. Herein, oxygen-doped graphite carbon nitride (denoted as O-g-C 3 N 4 ) was fabricated though thermal polycondensation of urea using H 2 O 2 as an oxygen source. The resulting O-g-C 3 N 4 material was loose and had homogeneous pores structure, with a specific surface area of 73.74 m 2 /g. The O-g-C 3 N 4 was served as fiber coating material to create solid phase microextraction (SPME) device, with silica sol as adhesive for OPEs determination. Owing to the well-developed porosity of O-g-C 3 N 4 , which provides effective mass transfer channels for OPEs, the whole SPME procedure could be accomplished within 25 min. The O-g-C 3 N 4 fiber coating offers excellent mechanical strength and high stability and being workable after 180 sampling. The developed approach revealed a good linearity for OPEs in ultrapure water at the concentrations of 0.01–100 μg/L with the LODs between 0.001 μg/L and 0.003 μg/L. In addition, relative recoveries of 85.24% ∼99.73% were achieved in tap water and river water. These findings suggested that the oxygen-doped g-C 3 N 4 material has potential for headspace SPME of trace OPEs in various matrixes.

Abstract:Implementation of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) in the separation science is attractive for many researchers, nowadays. In this study, three MOFs were synthesized and employed as extractive coating fibers. The MIL-101-NH2-based coatings were implemented in immersed solid phase microextraction (ISPME) of organophosphorus pesticides (OPPs) from real-life samples. The three different kinds of fiber coatings included MIL-101-NH2 and its acyl and ethyl modified structures as particles and 3-aminopropyl triethoxysilane (APTES) sol-gel precursor as binder. Each single MOF was coated on a stainless steel substrate via sol-gel technique. The uniform and tunable pore structure, high surface area, and capability to functionalization of MIL-101-NH2, make it susceptible for isolation of a wide range of analytes from small to large molecules. Extraction performance of the synthesized fiber coatings with different functionalities was examined on some model OPPs, followed by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC–MS). The highest extraction efficiency was achieved by the acyl-modified (MIL-101-NHCOCH3) fiber coating. The effects of various parameters affecting the extraction and desorption efficiency such as desorption time, desorption temperature, ionic strength, stirring rate, extraction time and temperature for the selected fiber were investigated and optimized. All the synthesized fiber coatings showed sufficient affinity while the acyl modified extractive phase was found to be very sensitive for determination of OPPs with reliable figures of merit such as acceptable linear dynamic ranges (1–1000 & 5–1000 ng.kg−1, here two linear dynamic ranges (LDR) are reported due to the variation of LDR ranges from one analyte to another), low limits of detection (0.2–1 ng.kg−1), suitable intra–day (RSD% <13%) and inter–day relative standard deviation (RSD% <15%).
