Abstract:The development of adsorption materials with good stability and high efficiency is significant in solid-phase microextraction (SPME). In this work, metal–organic framework MOF-808 (Zr) was modified by trifluoroacetic acid (TFA) to improve its hydrophobicity. MOF-808-TFA was electrochemically deposited on stainless steel wire with poly (3, 4-ethylenedioxthiophene) (PEDOT) to increase its extraction efficiency. The main parameters in the synthesis and extraction procedure were optimized. The prepared MOF-808-TFA@PEDOT nanocomposite coating was characterized by scanning electron microscopy, energy dispersive spectrometer, X-ray diffraction, Fourier transform infrared spectrometry and thermogravimetric analysis. A direct immersion solid-phase microextraction (DI-SPME) method for six phenols was developed based on the nanocomposite coating which had good service life (150 times). The extraction efficiency was 12 times higher than the commercial PDMS coating. Combined with gas chromatography-flame ionization detector (GC-FID), a simultaneous determination method for the six phenols was established, which exhibited wide linear range with 0.05–50 μg L −1 ( R 2 > 0.99). The limit of detection was 0.01–0.08 μg L −1 (S/N = 3), and the limit of quantification was 0.05–0.25 μg L −1 . The method was applied to determine the migration quantity of phenols from four metal cans with recovery rate between 85.6–116.8 % (RSD < 13.9 %), and it was verified by standard GC–MS method and SPSS statistical analysis. These results indicated the DI-SPME-GC-FID method had reliability and potential application in security testing for food contact materials.

Abstract:In this work, a hollow zirconium-porphyrin-based metal-organic framework (HZ-PMOF) was prepared as a coating for solid-phase microextraction (SPME) fiber to determine two naphthols. HZ-PMOF coating provided good extraction performance for naphthols because of the rich forces including π-π interactions, hydrogen bonding, and electrostatic interaction between the materials and targets. Furthermore, due to the special shape of the hollow structure, HZ-PMOF coating showed time-saving SPME equilibrium time and higher extraction capacity than zirconium-porphyrin-based metal-organic framework (Z-PMOF) coating without hollow structure. Combining with gas chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (GC-MS/MS), an analytical method of naphthols with low detection limit (1.0 ng L<sup>-1</sup>), wider linear range (3.0-1000.0 ng L<sup>-1</sup>) and good reproducibility (RSD ≤8.6%) was established. Subsequently, naphthols in water samples from five cities in China were successfully detected by this developed method with satisfactory recoveries (81.1%-117.9%) and precision (RSDs, 3.2-9.6%). The results indicated that the prepared HZ-PMOF-coated fiber has good application prospects, and would broaden the application of materials with special morphology in the field of pretreatment.

Abstract:Exploring coating materials with superior extraction efficiency has always been the pursuit in the field of solid phase microextraction (SPME). Metal coordination clusters with high thermal and chemical stability, abundant functional groups as active adsorption site are the promising coatings. In the study, a Zn5(H2Ln)6(NO3)4 (Zn5, H3Ln =(1,2-bis-(benzo[d]imidazol-2-yl)-ethenol) cluster coating was prepared and applied for SPME of ten phenols. Zn5 based SPME fiber exhibited high extraction efficiencies for phenols in headspace (HS) mode, which circumvented the pollution of SPME fiber. The adsorption isotherm and theoretical calculation indicated the adsorption mechanism of phenols on Zn5 was hydrophobic interaction, H-bond interaction and π-π stacking. Under the optimized extraction conditions, an HS-SPME-GC-MS/MS method was developed for the determination of ten phenols in water and soil samples. For ten phenolic compounds in water and soil samples, the linear ranges were 0.5-5000 ng/L and 0.5-250 ng/g, respectively. The limits of detection (LODs, S/N = 3) were 0.010-1.20 ng/L and 0.0048-0.16 ng/g, respectively. The precisions of single fiber and fiber-to-fiber were lower than 9.0% and 14.1%, respectively. The proposed method was applied for the detection of ten phenolic compounds in various water and soil samples, showing satisfactory recovery (72.1-118.8%). This study delivered a novel and efficient SPME coating material for the extraction of phenols.
In Situ fabricated porous carbon coating derived from metal-organic frameworks for highly selective solid-phase microextraction

Abstract:Solid-phase microextraction (SPME) has been widely used in analysis of trace organic contaminants in environmental samples. Stable, efficient, and selective fiber coating is the key to the development of SPME technique. In this study, an in situ fabricated porous carbon coating that derived from metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) was introduced for solid-phase microextraction (SPME). The carbon coating (denoted as MOF-74-C) was prepared by the direct carbonization of a MOF-74 coating that was in situ grown on stainless steel wire, which was explored for the extraction of odorous organic contaminants for the first time. MOF-74-C coated fiber showed high extraction efficiency (1.1–16.0 times larger than commercial fibers for most tested analytes under the same extraction conditions), as well as good thermal and chemical stability. Furthermore, it can selectively extract the analytes with the simultaneous exclusion of coexisting dissolved organic matter due to the molecular sieve effect invoked by the well-defined micropores. The method based on MOF-74-C coating for analysis of odorants afforded wide linear ranges (more than two orders of magnitude), low detection limits (below the odor threshold concentrations), good intra- and inter-day accuracies (90.1–107.3%) and precisions (relative standard deviations/RSDs below 9.4%) and satisfactory reproducibility (RSDs below 8.7%). Finally, the MOF-74-C coated fiber was successfully applied for the SPME analysis of odorants in real water samples. These results highlight the great potential of in situ fabricated porous carbons derived from MOFs for SPME applications.

Abstract:The solid phase microextraction (SPME) technique has been widely applied in the detection of trace compounds in food, environment, and medicine due to its advantages of easy quantification, simple operation, and greenness. Herein, a templating strategy with SiO 2 nanofibers (SiO 2 NFs) is reported to synthesize hierarchical covalent organic framework hollow nanofibers (COF HNFs)-coated stainless steel fiber for SPME application with dramatically enhanced enrichment performance for trace analytes. The construction of hierarchical porosity inside the microextraction coatings can not only increase the specific surface area of COF extraction materials for obtaining more abundant adsorption sites but also greatly improve the accessibility of internal COF micropores. Moreover, the thicknesses of the microextraction COF coatings can be facilely tailored by adjusting the amount of SiO 2 NFs pre-assembled on the SPME fibers. On the headspace solid phase microextraction (HS-SPME) of antimicrobial residues, the developed COF TpBD-Me 2 HNFs-12 fibers achieve enrichment factors of 2026 and 1823 for thymol and carvacrol respectively, which are significantly higher than those obtained from the counterpart COF TpBD-Me 2 -bonded fiber (8.5–8.2 times) and commercial CAR/PDMS fiber (3.3–4.4 times). Furthermore, the developed method was demonstrated to have wide linearity (0.1–50 μg L -1 ), low limits of detection (0.010 μg L -1 ), good thermal stability and excellent reusability (>60 recycles), demonstrating great application potential in the extraction of trace organic pollutants. The strategy developed in this work is applicable to preparing a variety of topological COF (e.g., TpBD, TpPa-1) HNFs-bonded fibers.

Abstract:High-performance extraction of polar phenols from aqueous samples is challenging because of their hydrophilicity, extremely low concentration, and complicated matrices. Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) are new types of porous organic materials. In this work, spherical TPB-DMTP-COF was fabricated via a simple room-temperature solution-phase approach. The material exhibited high acid/base stability, remarkable thermostability, high crystallinity, and large surface area of 1560 m(2) g(-1) and thus could be an excellent coating for solid-phase microextraction (SPME) of phenols. This coating provided superior adsorption affinity toward phenols over commercial coatings. TPB-DMTP-coated fiber showed high enhancement factors (EFs, 1741-4265), and EFs increased with the number of chlorine or methyl substituents and high hydrophobicity of phenols. Hence, the strong adsorption affinity could be derived from hydrophobic and steric hindrance effects together with pi-pi affinity, H-bonding, van der Waals forces, and size-matching effect. The proposed approach based on TPB-DMTP-COF-coated fiber and gas chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry achieved low limits of detection (0.0048-0.015 ng L-1), wide linearity (0.05-1000 ng L-1), good precision (< 8.87%), and reproducibility ( < 10.0%). The actual amounts of phenols ranged from 0.6 ng L-1 to 22.7 ng L-1 in underground water and reservoir water. The satisfactory recoveries (81.3-116.3%) for simultaneous analysis of five phenols were obtained. Therefore, TPB-DMTP-COF coating could be an excellent alternative for sensitive analysis of phenols at ultra-trace level in complex samples.

Abstract:The development of a straightforward method for preparing high-performing solid-phase microextraction (SPME) coatings is of paramount importance. In this work, inspired by architectural engineering, a simple and rapid synthetic strategy was developed to grow covalent organic frameworks (COFs) in situ on the surface of stainless steel wire as the SPME coating. Subsequently, the COF-coated fiber was applied for the extraction of phenols. Due to the avoidance of using any binder, the porous structure of COFs was well preserved, leading to a superior extraction performance, surpassing physically adhered COF coatings and commercial polyacrylate coatings. Combined with gas chromatography-mass spectrometry, an efficient and sensitive analytical method for the quantification of phenols was established with high enhancement factors (11080–58762), wide linear ranges (2–10000 ng·L−1), low limits of detection (0.39–0.72 ng·L−1), and good repeatability (RSD, ≤7.9%). Moreover, the feasibility of the established method was demonstrated by the determination of target phenols in certified reference materials (water and soil) with satisfactory results. The proposed in situ preparation method provides a easy and efficient approach to prepare high-performance COF-coated fiber for the efficient SPME of trace phenols from complex matrices in practical samples.

Nanoleaf-derived carbon materials as a sensitivity coating for solid‑phase microextraction of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons

Abstract:Metal-organic framework-derived carbon materials have shown extensive application in the sensitive extraction of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), but more active sites for its adsorption were still a tireless pursuit. In this study, ZIF-nanoleaf-derived carbon (NLCs) was synthesized and developed as a solid-phase microextraction (SPME) fiber (NLCs-F). The extraction performance was compared with ZIF-dodecahedron-derived carbon (DHCs) coated fiber (DHCs-F), which was prepared by only changing the ratio of the reactants. The unique morphology of NLCs provided abundant adsorption active sites for the selected PAHs, while the large average aperture facilitated selective extraction of high molecular weight analytes. Additionally, the high carbon content enhanced the strong enrichment capability for hydrophobic PAHs. Hence, the prepared NLCs-F coupled with GC-MS showed a good correlation coefficient (0.9975) in a wide linear range, low limits of detection (0.3-1.8 ng L-1), satisfactory repeatability, and reproducibility, which made it apply in the enrichment of PAHs in actual tea and coffee samples.
Yolk-shell MOF-on-MOF hybrid solid-phase microextraction coatings for efficient enrichment and detection of pesticides: Structural regulation cause performance differences

Abstract:Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) based composites with different structure-activity relationships have been widely used in the field of organic pollutant adsorption and extraction. Here, two MOF-on-MOF composites with different structures (yolk-shell and core-shell) from homologous sources were prepared by a simple in-situ growth synthesis method and structural regulation. In order to verify the effect of composite structure on the extraction capacity, the adsorption performance of the yolk-shell structure (YS-NH2-UiO-66@CoZn-ZIF) and the core-shell structured (NH2-UiO-66@CoZn-ZIF) material were compared by using them as coating material of direct immersion solid-phase microextraction (DI-SPME) to enrich six pesticides in five matrices. The results showed that because of the unique hollow hierarchical structure, high specific surface area (930.68 m2 g-1), abundant and open active sites, and synergistic and complementary adsorption forces, YS-NH2-UiO-66@CoZn-ZIF composites had the maximum adsorption amount of 36.01-66.31 mg g-1 under the same experiment condition, which was 6.81%-34.26 % higher than that of NH2-UiO-66@CoZn-ZIF. In addition, the adsorption mechanism of the prepared materials was verified and elaborated through theoretical simulations and material characterization. Under the optimized conditions, the YS-NH2-UiO-66@CoZn-ZIF-coated SPME-HPLC-UV method had a wide linear range (0.241-500 μg L-1), a good linear correlation coefficient (R2 > 0.9988), a low detection limits (0.072-0.567 μg L-1, S/N = 3) and low quantification limits (0.241-1.891 μg L-1, S/N = 10). The relative standard deviations of individual fibers and different batches of fibers were 0.47-6.20 % and 0.22-2.48 %, respectively, and individual fibers could be recycled more than 104 times. This work provided a good synthetic route and comparative ideas for exploring the in-situ growth synthesis of yolk-shell composites with reasonable structure-activity relationships.

Abstract:Mood state was evaluated in 40 unpremeditated patients who underwent minor gynaecological surgery, before and up to 4 hours after, anaesthesia induced with either propofol 2.5 mg/kg or thiopentone 5 mg/kg. Assessments were made by a self‐report technique, the profile of mood states method. The results indicate that mood state was less affected postoperatively in patients induced with propofol than with thiopentone. The overall impression of the investigators was that propofol patients had a definite sense of well‐being after anaesthesia.
A highly porous fiber coating based on a Zn-MOF/COF hybrid material for solid-phase microextraction of PAHs in soil

Abstract:This study involved the development of a novel adsorbent by combining a Zn-based MOF with a melamine-based COF, resulting in the formation of a hybrid material known as Zn-MOF/COF. The adsorbent was characterized using FT-IR, SEM, XRD, EDX, and BET analysis techniques. The resulting Zn-MOF/COF sorbent was employed to prepare solid-phase microextraction (SPME) fibers for the extraction and enrichment of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in contaminated soil samples, after coupling with GC-FID. A Box-Behnken design (BBD) was used to optimize key variables of SPME conditions. Under optimal conditions of 85 °C for 30 min extraction with 23 μL g-1 sample's moisture level, linear responses of six PAHs were ranging from 1 to 20000 ng g⁻1 with determination coefficients greater than 0.99. Limits of detection (LODs) were over the ranges of 0.1-1 ng g-1. The RSDs for intra-fiber and inter-fiber analyses were obtained 2.2-6.6% and 5.2-11.6%, respectively. Relative recoveries values for real soil samples were found to be 91.1-110.2%. The results showed lower cost and higher extraction efficiency for the Zn-MOF/COF fiber, compared with commercial and homemade adsorbents.

Abstract:Based on the excellent physicochemical properties of metal organic framework (MOF) and covalent organic framework (COF), a novel MOF/COF composite was designed and prepared as coating fiber for headspace solid-phase microextraction (HS-SPME). Based on the amino group on the surface of as-synthesized UiO-66-NH 2 , porphyrin-based COF was covalently grown on the MOF surface by using tetra(4-aminophenyl)porphyrin and 4,4'-biphenyldicarboxaldehyde as building blocks to fabricate a novel MOF/COF composite. Subsequently, the composite was physically coated on the surface of polished stainless-steel wire for HS-SPME of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) by gas chromatography-flame ionization detection (GC-FID) determination. The morphology and structure of the MOF/COF composite was characterized by scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and N 2 adsorption-desorption. Influential adsorption and desorption parameters were optimized and the extraction mechanism was also discussed. Under optimal conditions, an HS-SPME/GC-FID method based on MOF/COF composite coated fiber was established for the analysis of PAHs in milk samples. The linear ranges of this method were 0.2-50.0 ng mL -1 (R 2 > 0.9908), and the limits of detection and quantitation were in the range of 0.02-0.07 ng mL -1 and 0.07-0.24 ng mL -1 , respectively. The relative standard deviations (RSDs) for PAHs were all less than 7.05%, which indicated eminent repeatability and reproducibility of the established method. Besides, the enrichment factors for PAHs were relatively high in the range of 2003 to 7763, and the recoveries for milk samples were ranged from 85.43% to 115.8% with satisfactory RSDs of 0.92-9.00%.

Abstract:The nature and fabrication of the fiber coatings with good adsorption capacity and selectivity play a decisive role in solid-phase microextraction (SPME). In this work, a facile strategy was proposed to fabricate a cobalt, phosphorus and nitrogen co-doped carbonaceous (Co-P-NC) coating on superelastic nitinol (NiTi) substrate as a binder-free fiber for SPME. In particular, direct electrochemical in situ growth of ZIF-67 crystals served as the N-containing carbon precursor and sacrificial template for subsequent controllable conversion of ZIF-67 into a novel porous Co-P-NC coating on the NiTi wire substrate via a phosphiding process in a N2 atmosphere. The obtained NiTi wire with the Co-P-NC coating (NiTi@Co-P-NC) was employed to investigate the adsorption of some representative aromatic analytes in water samples for the first time coupling with high-performance liquid chromatography with UV detection (HPLC/UV). The results proved that the resulting fiber showed superior adsorption selectivity for polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). Therefore, the key parameters were further examined for the adsorption and preconcentration of PAHs. Under the obtained conditions, linear chromatographic responses were achieved over the concentration ranges of 0.03-100 μg L-1 with the correlation coefficients ranging from 0.9980 to 0.9991. Limits of detection (LODs) were between 0.007 and 0.149 μg L-1 (S/N = 3). The developed SPME-HPLC/UV method was applied to selective preconcentration and sensitive determination of PAHs in water. Moreover, this fiber had good fiber preparation reproducibility and presented 120 adsorption and desorption cycles at the same time in practical SPME application.
Defective porous urchin-like ZnO/NiO microspheres-coated solid-phase microextraction fiber for analysis of trace polychlorinated biphenyls in milk

Abstract:Owing to the high lipophilicity of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCB), they easily accumulate in dairy products. Although usually present at very low levels, they pose a serious threat to human health. Therefore, developing a sensitive and reliable method for detecting PCB in dairy products is crucial. Herein, Herein, a metal-organic framework (MOF) material named with bimetallic nodes and double ligands was prepared as a precursor using a one-pot hydrothermal method. Defective porous urchin-like ZnO/NiO, derived from these MOF-based precursors (ZnNi-MOF-NH 2 ) as a sacrificial template, was synthesized via pyrolysis to remove heat-sensitive ligands. To the best of our knowledge, this urchin-like nanostructured ZnO/NiO hybrid was utilized as a solid-phase microextraction (SPME) coating for the first time. Headspace SPME (HS-SPME) was developed for non-contact extraction of PCB in milk prior to gas chromatography–tandem mass spectrometry (GC–MS/MS) analysis. Under optimal conditions, the HS-SPME–GC–MS/MS method exhibited a wide linear range (0.01–1000 ng·L −1 ), low limits of detection (0.003–0.025 ng·L −1 ), and high enrichment factors (5714–9906). Additionally, the performance of the ZnO/NiO SPME fiber coating showed no noticeable decrease after 175 uses. The method was applied to trace PCB analysis in milk samples, yielding recoveries of 70.3–114.1 %. The ZnO/NiO derived from MOF-based material provides a promising candidate for SPME coatings to extract PCB and other analogs.

Abstract:Metal-organic nanotubes (MONTs) have great potential for solid phase microextraction (SPME) on account of high specific surface area, tunable pore sizes, and exceptional thermal and chemical stability. In this work, zinc (II)-based metal-organic nanotubes (Zn-MONTs) were used as an adsorbent for the SPME of nitro-polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (NPAHs) at trace levels from environmental water samples. Gas chromatography-mass spectrometry was used for sample analysis and key factors were investigated and optimized. Under optimal parameters, the developed method achieved low limits of detection (1.4-7.3 ng L-1), wide linear range (10-5000 ngL(-1)), and high enrichment factors (1510 - 17,684). In comparison to the PDMS and DVB/CAR/PDMS fiber for potential commercial use, the Zn-MONTs fiber obtained MS responses 2-9 times as high as those achieved by the commercial 100 gm PDMS and 0.2-2.3 times higher than 50/30 gm DVB/CAR/PDMS fiber did. The proposed method was successfully used in the analysis of NPAHs at trace levels in environmental samples.

Abstract:Hierarchical porous zeolitic imidazolate framework‐8 (HpZIF-8) have not only good chemical and thermal stability, but also pore structures of different sizes. In this work, HpZIF-8 supported hollow-fiber liquid-phase microextraction (HpZIF-8@HF-LPME) co-modified with tributyl phosphate and 2-nitroethyl benzene was firstly developed for purification and enrichment of nine typical phenolic pollutants followed by electrophoretic separation and amperometric detection (CE-AD). The key enrichment parameters were optimized by full factorial experimental and central composite designs. Under the optimum conditions, the maximum enrichment factors for the nine analytes were 479 (phenol), 249 (2-chlorophenol), 821 (4-chlorophenol), 1253 (3-methylphenol), 1376 (2,4-dichlorophenol), 1078 (2,4,6-trichlorophenol), 200 (pentachlorophenol), 614 (4-nitrophenol) and1827 times (bisphenol A), respectively. The limits of detection were 0.060–1.5 μg L −1 (S/ N = 3) in real sample matrixes. This proposed method has been successfully applied to water samples with high ionic strength, and the average recoveries were in the range of 80.2–118.0%. This developed method of HpZIF-8@HF-LPME/CE-AD needs no desorption and derivatization, providing an alternative for monitoring typical phenolic pollutants in water samples.

Abstract:In this study, three kinds of Zeolite imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8), synthesized by solvothermal, stirring and ball-milling method, were fabricated on the stainless steel wire via sol-gel technique. These fibers were used as solid phase microextraction (SPME) coating materials and applied for analyzing 16 polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and 11 nitro polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (NPAHs) in environmental water samples by gas chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (GC-MS). The optimal pH, ionic strength, extraction time, extraction temperature, desorption temperature and desorption time were 6.0, without salt addition, 45 min, 35 degrees C, 260 degrees C and 5 min, respectively. The extraction mechanism of the ZIF-8 fiber might be the hydrophobicity, molecular penetration and pi-pi stacking interactions. Under the optimized conditions, the as-proposed fiber provides a wide linearity range from 10 to 20,000 ng L-1 and a low detection limit of 0.3-27.0 ng L-1 for PAHs and NPAHs analysis. The single fiber and fiber to fiber relative standard deviations were observed in the range of 3.0%-13.9% and 3.5%-12.3%, respectively. Abstract:Metal organic frameworks of type MOF-5 exhibit good adsorption capacity for many organic compounds. The authors have used nanoscale silica-coated zerovalent iron and MOF-5 to prepare, by co-precipitation, a novel magnetic nanomaterial of type Fe@MOF-5. Its morphology and structure were characterized by transmission electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction. The nanomaterial is shown to be well suited for magnetic solid phase extraction for five kinds of N- and S-containing polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons prior to quantitation by HPLC. The limits of detection are in the 25 to 33 ng⋅L−1 concentration range. Four real water samples were used to validate the method, and the recoveries of spiked samples with concentrations of 5 and 10 ppb were found to be in the range between 92.6 and 97.3% (n = 3). The Fe@MOF-5 sorbent obviously has excellent adsorption capability for such compounds, can be fairly easily synthesized, displays sensitivity, simplicity, ease of operation, and can be prepared at low costs. In our perception, it has a large potential in terms of monitoring such environmental pollutants.Graphical abstractA metal organic framework of type Fe@MOF-5 is found to exhibit good adsorption capacity for N- and S-containing polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons.
