Abstract:The development of n-type thermoelectric (TE) materials with high TE performance and long-term air stability is one of the key drivers to advance the application of TE materials today. Here, a series of single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNT)/N,N-dimethylferrocenemethylamine(FcMA)/polyethylene glycol (PEG) composites were fabricated using a simple solution mixing process. The high electron-donating FcMA and the strong SWCNTs-binding PEG may cause a synergistic effect. A highest power factor (600.6 μW m −1 K −2 ) of SWCNT/FcMA/PEG-5% was achieved, which is higher than that of SWCNTs/PEG (5%) (217.6 μW m −1 K −2 ) and SWCNTs/FcMA (567.5 μW m −1 K −2 ), respectively. In addition, SWCNT/FcMA/PEG-5% composites displayed long-term air-stability, the S of which remained 88% after exposed to air for over 900 h. Since the ratio of PEG is relatively low, the high air-stability is mainly not due to the coating of SWCNT surface by PEG as literature reported. Based on the results of the X-ray photophysical spectra, the high air-stability can be attributed to the stronger binding ability of PEG to the defects of SWCNTs than that of O 2 , which relieves the oxidation of SWCNT, thus improving the air-stability. This strategy will provide insight in the development of air-stable n-type TE materials with high TE performance.

Oxygen-Rich Polymer Polyethylene Glycol-Functionalized Single-Walled Carbon Nanotubes Toward Air-Stable n-Type Thermoelectric Materials

Abstract:It is crucial for thermoelectric (TE) devices to obtain both p-type and n-type materials and control charge carrier density. However, n-type thermoelectric materials are quite deficient and have lower thermoelectric properties. We report one oxygen-rich polymer named polyethylene glycol (PEG) for converting p-type single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) to air-stable n-type thermoelectric materials. When pristine SWCNTs were doped with 2 mg·mL–1 PEG in an ethanol solution, the optimal Seebeck coefficient of PEG/SWCNT composites reached −50.8 μV·K–1. The result of ultraviolet photoelectron spectroscopy demonstrated that the lone pair of oxygen atoms in the PEG chain has electron transferability to SWCNTs. According to the hard and soft acid and base theory, sodium hydroxide (NaOH) was further introduced to improve air stability and thermoelectric performance of doped SWCNTs. As a result, PEG/NaOH/SWCNT composites achieved the highest power factor of 173.8 μW·m–1·K–2 at 300 K. Meanwhile, their final changes in electrical conductivity and the Seebeck coefficient are less than 8% in the investigation of air stability over two months. Inspired by this finding, we fabricated the TE generator composed of the pristine p-type SWCNTs and n-type PEG/NaOH/SWCNT composites. The maximum output power of this robust TE device reached 5.3 μW at a temperature gradient of 76 K, which is superior to many reported TE devices. Moreover, the experimental procedure is attractive as a sustainable process for materials preparation. Abstract:Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) have been demonstrated as promising candidates for thermoelectrics (TEs) owing to their excellent electrical and mechanical properties. Here a new dopant to obtain flexible n‐type CNT‐based TE films from solution is reported. By doping single‐walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) with tetrabutylammonium bromide (TBAB), p‐type nanotubes can be successfully converted to n‐type form, which is confirmed by both Raman and X‐ray photoemission spectroscopy (XPS) spectra. Furthermore, the influences of doping concentration and dispersion medium on TE properties are investigated. The optimal n‐type SWCNT films fabricated in N,N‐dimethylformamide (DMF) solvent exhibit an impressive power factor of 339 µW m−1 K−2 and excellent air stability by less than 10% variation of Seebeck coefficient during 192 h at room temperature without encapsulation, both of which are among the hitherto highest reported. This work sheds light on the interaction between TBAB molecules and SWCNTs in different dispersion media and offers a guideline for efficient n‐doping of SWCNT based TE materials.
Synergistic effects of water and carbon dioxide on the reversible thermoelectric behaviors of polyethyleneimine/single-walled carbon nanotubes composites

Abstract:Polyethyleneimine (PEI) doped single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) composites (PEI/SWCNTs) as n-type organic thermoelectric (TE) materials are important candidates for fabricating flexible TE generators. However, the mechanism of unstable TE behavior for PEI/SWCNTs in the air has been not revealed, which hinders the potential application. In this study, we have investigated the influence of CO2, H2O/N2, H2O/CO2, and air on the composition of PEI and TE properties of PEI/SWCNTs. The change of chemical structure shows H2O and CO2 have a series of reactions with the amino of PEI to form ammonium salts, which causes the changes in the types of carriers. The Seebeck coefficient shows that the synergistic effect of H2O and CO2 promotes PEI/SWCNTs changing from n-type to p-type. However, the Seebeck coefficient in dry air shows O2 almost has no influence on the carrier type of PEI/SWCNTs and the n-type PEI/SWCNTs film can be stable for three months in dry air. Noticeably, reversible transformation between n-type and p-type has been realized via regulating the H2O and CO2. The revealed mechanism offers a facile strategy to realize the reversible regulation of TE properties of PEI/SWCNTs and provides a direction for fabricating air-stable n-type PEI/SWCNTs with high TE performance.

High performance of p-type and n-type thermoelectric materials based on liquid crystal mixture and single-walled carbon nanotube composites

Abstract:Organic small molecule (OSM)/single-walled carbon nanotube (SWCNT) composites are promising thermoelectric (TE) materials, however the low Seebeck coefficient (S) limits their application. Here, a eutectic nematic mixture E7 was chosen to improve the S and power factor (PF) of SWCNTs by energy filtering process. As a result, the introduction of E7 can significantly decrease the carrier concentration of the composite with the mobility greatly enhanced, leading to an improved S (2.23 times of that of pristine SWCNTs). At the mass ratio of 1:0.25, the p-type SWCNT/E7 composites displayed a maximum PF of 428.59 ± 58.15 μW m−1 K−2, which was one of the highest values among OSM-based TE composites reported so far. In addition, after doped with triethylamine, SWCNT/E7 can convert from p-type to n-type. This study demonstrated that SWCNT/E7 composites showed great promise in TE materials and opened up a new avenue for the development of TE materials.

Abstract:Although thermoelectric composites of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) with organic polymers or small organic molecules have witnessed explosive achievements, judicious molecular design still remains a great challenge. Here, p-type doping using spiro-bifluorene derivatives is proposed to significantly improve single-walled CNT (SWCNT) thermoelectric performance. The composite shows an increase of ∼108% in room-temperature power factor relative to the pristine SWCNT (112.6 ± 4.3 μW m-1 K-2), with the maximum of 239.2 ± 4.2 μW m-1 K-2. The corresponding mechanism of effective p-type doping and strong interfacial interaction are elucidated by calculated energy levels, SWCNT surface coating and photophysical spectroscopic measurements. Finally, the thermoelectric device connected in series display an open-circuit voltage and an output power of 9.77 mV and 57.3 nW, respectively at a temperature gradient of 30 K. The results will benefit the exploitation of novel CNT-based TE composites and their applications.

Synergistic Interactions in Sequential Process Doping of Polymer/Single‐Walled Carbon Nanotube Nanocomposites for Enhanced n‐Type Thermoelectric Performance

Abstract:The chemical structures of various conjugated polymers affect the doping process in polymer/single‐walled carbon nanotube (SWCNT) nanocomposites with 4‐(2,3‐dihydro‐1,3‐dimethyl‐1H‐benzimidazol‐2‐yl)‐N,N‐dimethylbenzenamine (N‐DMBI). The successful doping outcomes are attributed to strong polymer‐dopant interaction, coupled with a moderate polymer‐SWCNT interaction . Under a temperature difference of 20 K, a p–n integrated thermoelectric generator with ten legs generates an output power of 27.2 nW. This study focuses on the fabrication of nanocomposite thermoelectric devices by blending either a naphthalene‐diimide (NDI)‐based conjugated polymer (NDI‐T1 or NDI‐T2), or an isoindigo (IID)‐based conjugated polymer (IID‐T2), with single‐walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs). This is followed by sequential process doping method with the small molecule 4‐(2,3‐dihydro‐1,3‐dimethyl‐1H‐benzimidazol‐2‐yl)‐N,N‐dimethylbenzenamine (N‐DMBI) to provide the nanocomposite with n‐type thermoelectric properties. Experiments in which the concentrations of the N‐DMBI dopant are varied demonstrate the successful conversion of all three polymer/SWCNT nanocomposites from p‐type to n‐type behavior. Comprehensive spectroscopic, microstructural, and morphological analyses of the pristine polymers and the various N‐DMBI‐doped polymer/SWCNT nanocomposites are performed in order to gain insights into the effects of various interactions between the polymers and SWCNTs on the doping outcomes. Among the obtained nanocomposites, the NDI‐T1/SWCNT exhibits the highest n‐type Seebeck coefficient and power factor of −57.7 μV K−1 and 240.6 μW m−1 K−2, respectively. However, because the undoped NDI‐T2/SWCNT exhibits a slightly higher p‐type performance, an integral p–n thermoelectric generator is fabricated using the doped and undoped NDI‐T2/SWCNT nanocomposite. This device is shown to provide an output power of 27.2 nW at a temperature difference of 20 K.

Unusual Electrical Conductivity Enhancement in Stable n-Type Carbon Nanotube Networks

Abstract:Organic molecule-doped n-type single-walled carbon nanotube (SWCNT) networks are promising candidates for advanced energy applications, such as flexible thermoelectrics and photovoltaics. Yet charge transport in n-type SWCNTs is limited by two factors: i) charge localization impeding inter-tube transport caused by disordered mesostructure of randomly oriented SWCNTs and ii) reduction of charge carrier concentration driven by oxidation. Herein, studied the relationship between the mesostructure and thermoelectric properties of n-type SWCNTs obtained by surfactant-functionalization and polymer-dopant grafting. Surprisingly, the electrical conductivity of the polymer-doped SWCNTs keeps increasing with increasing polymer content, even after the saturation of carrier concentration, resulting in 12x higher conductivity on polymer-doping compared to surfactant-functionalization. While hopping transport typically dominates in disordered systems, it is shown that a bridging effect from the polymer causes unusual band-like conduction in polymer-doped SWCNTs. Additionally, since surfactants are essential to prevent oxidation and retain n-type over a long duration, shows that SWCNTs obtained through a dual-functionalization strategy using both polymer-dopant and surfactant, demonstrates a long-term stable high n-type thermoelectric power factor, when the surfactant amount is carefully controlled. Besides thermoelectrics, the findings are of general interest to developing stable and conductive n-type SWCNTs for various energy and electronic applications.

Abstract:Two N-annulated perylene (NP)-based organic small molecules (OSMs) with end groups of di- p -tolylamine (DTA) and phenyl-di- p -tolylamine (PhDTA), namely DDTANP and DPhDTANP, are incorporated into single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) to fabricate nanocomposite thin films for thermoelectric (TE) application. The weight ratios of OSMs to SWCNTs range from 1:1 to 1:4. The inherent planar structures of these novel OSMs facilitate strong π-π interactions and charge transfer with SWCNTs. Specifically, the DDTANP/SWCNT nanocomposite films, due to its lower HOMO, induces pronounced energy filtering and, thus, a high Seebeck coefficient (S). At the optimized weight ratio of 1:3, DDTANP/SWCNT nanocomposite thin film exhibits an electrical conductivity (σ) of 214.7 S cm −1 , and S of 59.8 μV K −1 . The flat structure of DPhDTANP enhances its adhesion to SWCNTs, thereby improving dispersion and increasing σ. Similarly, the DPhDTANP/SWCNT (1:3) nanocomposite thin film achieves 256.4 S cm −1 , and an S of 55.8 μV K −1 . The DPhDTANP/SWCNT (1:3) nanocomposite film exhibits higher σ, resulting in a power factor (PF) of 79.8 μW m −1 K −2 , surpassing the PF of 76.7 μW m −1 K −2 for the DDTANP/SWCNT (1:3) nanocomposite film. These findings offer valuable insights into molecular design for SWCNTs-based composite TE research and contributed to enhancing TE applications.

Synergistically Boosting Thermoelectric Performance of PEDOT:PSS/SWCNT Composites via the Ion-Exchange Effect and Promoting SWCNT Dispersion by the Ionic Liquid

Abstract:Poly(3,4 ethylenedioxythiophene):poly(styrenesulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS) is perhaps the most successful polymer material for thermoelectric (TE) applications. So far, treatments by high-boiling solvents, acid or base, or mixing with the carbon nanotube (CNT) are the main ways to improve its TE performance. Herein, we report the synergistically boosting TE properties of PEDOT:PSS/single-walled CNT (SWCNT) composites by the ionic liquid (IL). The composites are prepared by physically mixing the SWCNT dispersion containing the IL with PEDOT:PSS solution and subsequent vacuum filtration. The IL additive has two major functions, that is, inducing the phase separation of PEDOT:PSS and a linear quinoid conformation of PEDOT and promoting the SWCNT dispersion. The maximum power factor at room temperature reaches 182.7 ± 9.2 μW m–1 K–2 (the corresponding electrical conductivity and Seebeck coefficient are 1602.6 ± 103.0 S cm–1 and 33.4 ± 0.4 μV K–1, respectively) for the free-standing flexible film of the PEDOT:PSS/SWCNT composites with the IL, which is much higher than those of the pristine PEDOT:PSS, the IL-free PEDOT:PSS/SWCNT, and the SWCNT films. The high TE performance of composites can be ascribed to synergistic roles of the ion-exchange effect and promotion of SWCNT dispersion by the IL. Abstract:Single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) offer promise as materials for thermoelectric generators (TEGs) due to their flexibility, durability, and non-toxic nature. However, a key barrier to their application lies in their high thermal conductivity, which hampers the generation of temperature differences in TEGs. To address this challenge, we explored a method of enhancing the heat dissipation of SWCNT-based TEGs by coating SWCNT layers onto polymer mesh sheets. During TEG fabrication, achieving stable n-type SWCNT/mesh sheets proved considerably more challenging than their p-type counterparts. This difficulty stemmed from the inferior dispersibility of the n-type SWCNT ink compared to the p-type SWCNT ink. To produce n-type SWCNT/mesh sheets, we initially prepared p-type SWCNT/mesh sheets using p-type SWCNT ink, subsequently doping them with a cationic surfactant solution to induce n-type characteristics. To stabilize the n-type thermoelectric properties in SWCNT/mesh sheets, we applied a fluoropolymer coating to the SWCNT surfaces, mitigating the adsorption of oxygen molecules. This approach yielded n-type SWCNT/mesh sheets capable of long-term maintenance. Furthermore, flexible TEGs fabricated using both p- and n-type SWCNT/mesh sheets demonstrated an output voltage of 15 mV, which can operate IoT sensors using the latest booster circuits, and a maximum power of 100 nW at a temperature difference of 71 K.

Organic borate doped carbon nanotube for enhancement of thermoelectric performance

Abstract:Molecular doping is vital to control the charge transport in organic/inorganic semiconductors, which provides an important technique to optimize the thermoelectric (TE) performance. Here, two organic borates with designed molecular structures, Ph3C+[B(C6F5)4]- and Ph2I+[B(C6F5)4]-, were employed as p-type dopants to enhance the TE performance of single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs). The electrons are transferred from SWCNTs to the electron-deficient cations of the borates, resulting in charge-transfer complexes stabilized by [B(C6F5)4]-. Specifically, compared to the pristine SWCNTs, the borate-doped SWCNT films reveal enhanced power factors of 135.5 ± 8.4 μW m−1 K−2 for SWCNT/Ph3C+[B(C6F5)4]-, and 156.6 ± 7.2 μW m−1 K−2 for SWCNT/Ph2I+[B(C6F5)4]-. Moreover, the p-doped SWCNTs display good air and thermal stabilities due to the chemical inertness and thermal stability of the organic [B(C6F5)4]- anions. In addition, by immersion in organic solvent, the TE performance can be further increased. This work provides a novel strategy to achieve stable p-doped SWCNT films with excellent TE performance via rational molecular design of organic borate dopants.

Abstract:Flexible thermoelectric (TE) materials, which are devices that convert thermal gradients to electrical energy, have attracted interest for practical energy-harvesting/recovery applications. However, as compared with p-type materials, the progress on the development of n-type TE flexible materials has been slow due to difficulties involved in n-type doping techniques. This study used high mobility carbon nanotubes (CNTs) to a uniformly mixed hybrid-composite, resulting in an enhanced power factor by increasing electrical conductivity. The energy filtering effect and stoichiometric composition of the material used, bismuth telluride (Bi2Te3) correlated to a significant enhancement in TE performance, with a power factor of 225.9 μW m-1K-2 at room temperature: a factor of 65 higher than as-fabricated composite film. This paper describes a simplified synthesis for the preparation of the composite film that eliminates time-intensive and cost-prohibitive processing, traditionally seen during extrusion and dicing inorganic manufacturing. The resulting post-annealed composite film consisting of Bi2Te3 nanowire and CNTs demonstrate a promising candidate for material that can be used for an n-type TE device that has improved energy conversion efficiency.

Abstract:Here, we put forward an effective strategy to regulate the interface structure of carbon nanotubes/polyaniline (CNTs/PANI) composite films and improve their thermoelectric (TE) properties by sequential dedoping-redoping treatment. Dedoping induces conductive resistance-undoped PANI to enhance the energy barrier between CNTs and PANI, leading to a greatly increased Seebeck coefficient and deteriorated conductivity. Subsequently, upon the redoping process, the electrical conductivity is dramatically improved owing to the generated conductive PANI chains, while Seebeck coefficient is maintained at 90% of the dedoped composites. This yields a significantly improved power factor of 407 μW m–1 K–2 from the as-prepared composites (234 μW m–1 K–2), which is the highest value among those of all the reported CNTs/PANI composites. The outstanding TE performanceis probably ascribed to the multiple interface structure of the PANI composite generated from incomplete dedoping and redoping processes, contributing to the enhanced carrier-filtering effect to retain a relatively high Seebeck coefficient and efficient charge transport to improve conductivity. Effective approaches to produce high performance single-walled carbon nanotubes/platinum based hybrid films by inserting thermoelectric material with high seebeck coefficient

Abstract:The scarcity of highly conductive materials with solution-processable ability and the contradictory relationship between conductivity (σ) and Seebeck coefficient (S), have greatly limited the development of thermoelectric (TE) materials. To address these challenges, we propose a novel strategy from the following two aspects: 1) Highly conductive materials with solution-processable ability are achieved by simply combining platinum-based complexes with Single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs). Among them, SWCNT/Pt-4 manifests the highest σ (4166.3 S cm−1), which is among the highest for p-type SWCNT-based TE materials; 2) The TE material with high S is applied to the above system to overcome the restrictive relationship between S and σ. The optimized three composites display remarkably higher power factor (PF) than those of either two hybrids at room temperature, and the highest PF is achieved by SWCNT/(Ge0.87Pb0.13Te)0.95(Bi2Te3)0.05/PtCl4 (471.8 μW m−1 K−2) at 420 K. This strategy simultaneously improves the PF of SWCNTs by innovatively introducing a three-phase system in the composites. Our work opens up new material options for TE applications and provides a robust pathway to the development of high-performance TE materials.

The Enhanced Thermoelectric and Mechanical Performance of Polythiophene/Single-Walled Carbon Nanotube Composites with Polar Ethylene Glycol Branched-Chain Modifications

Abstract:In order to develop flexible thermoelectric materials with thermoelectric and mechanical properties, in this study, we designed and synthesized polythiophene derivatives with branched ethylene glycol polar side-chains named P3MBTEMT, which were used in combination with single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) to prepare composite thin films and flexible thermoelectric devices. A comparison was made with a polymer named P3(TEG)T, which has a polar alkoxy linear chain. The UV-vis results indicated that the larger steric hindrances of the branched ethylene glycol side-chain in P3MBTEMT could inhibit its self-aggregation and had a stronger interaction with the SWCNTs compared to that of P3(TEG)T, which was also confirmed using Raman spectroscopy. When the mass ratio of SWCNTs to P3MBTEMT was 9:1 (represented as P3MBTEMT/SWCNTs-0.9), the composite film exhibited the highest thermoelectric properties with a power factor of 446.98 μW m−1 K−2, which was more than two times higher than that of P3(TEG)T/SWCNTs-0.9 (215.08 μW m−1 K−2). The output power of the thermoelectric device with P3MBTEMT/SWCNTs-0.9 was 2483.92 nW at 50 K, which was 1.66 times higher than that of P3(TEG)T/SWCNTs-0.9 (1492.65 nW). Furthermore, the P3MBTEMT/SWCNTs-0.5 showed superior mechanical properties compared to P3(TEG)T/SWCNTs-0.5. These results indicated that the mechanical and thermoelectric performances of polymer/SWCNT composites could be significantly improved by adding polar branched side-chains to conjugated polymers. This study provided a new strategy for creating high-performing novel flexible thermoelectric materials.

Abstract:Single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) are desirable flexible thermoelectric materials in applications of large-scale low-grade thermal energy. However, weak Seebeck coefficients of SWCNTs around room temperature limit their development as a flexible power generator. In this work, we significantly improve the Seebeck coefficients of SWCNT-based composites by integrating the discotic liquid-crystal 2,3,6,7,10,11-hexakis(hexyloxy) triphenylene (HAT6) through the energy-filtering effect. The Seebeck coefficients of SWCNT/HAT6 composite films are about more than twice that of the pristine SWCNT films, and a maximum power factor of 408.23 ± 48.96 μW m–1 K–2 is achieved at room temperature, which is one of the highest values among organic small-molecule-based thermoelectric composites reported so far. The flexible power generator based on p-type SWCNT/HAT6 films is first assembled. An outstanding power density of 0.64 μW cm–2 with a thermoelectric voltage of 17.64 mV at a temperature gradient of 56 K is achieved. Abstract:Incorporating single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) can effectively optimize the thermoelectric properties of poly(3,4-ethylenedioxithiophene):poly(styrenesulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS). However, the thermoelectric performance of flexible PEDOT:PSS/SWCNTs composites is still undesired due to the contradiction between electrical conductivity (σ) and Seebeck coefficient (S). Here, we adopt dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) doping and NaBH4 dedoping to achieve high thermoelectric properties of PEDOT:PSS/SWCNTs composite film by simultaneously improving σ and S. The PEDOT:PSS/SWCNTs composite with 60 wt% SWCNTs exhibits the highest power factor of 411 μW m−1 K−2, originating from high σ of 1718 S cm−1 and high S of 49 μV K−1. The high σ is derived from the improved carrier transport by insulating PSS removal, the transition of PEDOT chains with ordered stacking structures, and the formed three-dimensional conductive network between PEDOT:PSS and SWCNTs. As well, the decreased carrier concentration induced by the reduction of oxidation level of PEDOT:PSS after NaBH4 dedoping leads to a compromise between σ and S. Besides, a home-made thermoelectric device, fabricated using eight pieces of as-prepared PEDOT:PSS/SWCNTs composite films, shows an output power of 391 nW at a temperature difference of 20 K. Our work indicates that the combination of DMSO doping and NaBH4 dedoping can extend to promote the thermoelectric properties of flexible thermoelectric composite films.
