Abstract:Reproducible, highly sensitive, and selective polymer–noble metal–semiconductor single‐walled carbon nanotube (sc‐SWNT)‐based room‐temperature H2 sensors are successfully fabricated by chemically anchoring high‐purity sc‐SWNTs on an alkyne‐based adhesion layer‐treated substrate through a click reaction. Although semiconducting single‐walled carbon nanotubes (sc‐SWNTs) exhibit excellent sensing properties for various gases, commercialization is hampered by several obstacles. Among these, the difficulty in reproducibly fabricating sc‐SWNT films with uniform density and thickness is the main one. Here, a facile fabrication method for sc‐SWNT‐based hydrogen (H2) sensors with excellent reproducibility, high sensitivity, and selectivity against CO, CO2, and CH4 is reported. Uniform‐density and monolayer sc‐SWNT films are fabricated using chemical immobilized through the click reaction between azide‐functionalized polymer‐wrapped sc‐SWNTs and immobilized alkyne polymer on a substrate before decorating with Pd nanoparticles (0.5–3.0 nm). The optimized sc‐SWNT sensor has a high room‐temperature response of 285 with the response and recovery times of 10 and 3 s, respectively, under 1% H2 gas in air. In particular, this sensor demonstrates highly selective H2 detection at room temperature (25 °C), compared to other gases and humidity. Therefore, the chemical immobilization of the monolayer SWNT films with reproducible and uniform density has the potential for large‐scale fabrication of robust room‐temperature H2 sensors.

Abstract:Single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) have potential for creating high performance gas sensors, but the number of gases that can be detected is still limited and the sensitivity needs further improvement. Here, large-area SWNT films directly synthesized by chemical vapor deposition are configured into gas sensors for a range of toxic gases such as NH3, NO, and NO2. In particular, a SWNT-Fe2O3 composite film obtained via a simple annealing process produces a stable response to H2S and shows enhanced sensitivity to NO2 and at room temperature, compared with pristine SWNT films. Formation of uniform Fe2O3 nanoparticles throughout the porous film is responsible for improved performance and enabling sensing to more gases, and removes conventional steps such as chemical functionalization or doping. Flexible sensors that can be bent to large angles repeatedly are also demonstrated. SWNT films containing a large amount of residual catalyst can be directly manufactured into large-area, flexible or wearable, thin film or textile-configured sensors for various toxic gases. Abstract:A novel gas sensor based on composite films of poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene)/poly(styrenesulfonate) (PEDOT/PSS) and single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) was fabricated for the detection of fishy trimethylamine (TMA) vapor. The SWCNTs were functionalized by O-2 plasma treatment to improve their solubility in the polymeric matrix, and alternative current dielectrophoresis was utilized for the first time to assemble the PEDOT/PSS-SWCNTs composite film to enhance the response to TMA molecules. The high resolution transmission electron microscopy (HR-TEM) images showed that the SWCNTs maintained their bulk structure after O-2 plasma functionalization. The scanning electron microscopy (SEM) images of the composite film showed that the oxidized SWCNTs were orderly arranged and uniformly dispersed into the polymer by dielectrophoresis. Compositional analyses of SWCNTs by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) suggested that O-2 plasma functionalization could remove amorphous carbon from the nanotube surface and introduce more hydrophilic oxygen-containing groups, leading to the improvement of SWCNTs solubility in the polymeric matrix. Gas sensitivities of the composite films largely relied on the treatment conditions. Compared to the raw or acid-treated SWCNTs-doped composite films, the film doped with SWCNTs modified by O-2 plasma at 30 W for 3 min exhibited the most sensitive and stable response characteristics to ppb-level TMA gas.

Abstract:In order to enhance the sensitivity of carbon nanotube based chemical sensors at room temperature operation, CNTs/CuO nanocomposite was prepared under hydrothermal reaction condition. The resulted-product was characterized with TEM (transmission electron microscopy), XRD (X-ray diffraction) and so on. A chemical prototype sensor was constructed based on CNTs/CuO nanocomposite and an interdigital electrode on flexible polymer substrate. The gas-sensing behavior of the sensor to some typical organic volatiles was investigated at room temperature operation. The results indicated that the carbon nanotube was dispersed well in CuO matrix, the CuO was uniformly coated on the surface of carbon nanotube, and the tubular structure of carbon nanotube was clearly observed. From morphology of TEM images, it can also be observed that a good interfacial adhesion between CNT and CuO matrix was formed, which maybe due to the results of strong interaction between CNTs with carboxyl groups and CuO containing some hydroxy groups. The CNTs/CuO nanocomposite showed dramatically enhanced sensitivity to some typical organic volatiles. This study would provide a simple, low-cost and general approach to functionalize the carbon nanotube. It is also in favor of developing chemical sensors with high sensitivity or catalysts with high activity to organic volatiles at low temperature.

Abstract:Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) are potential candidates for wearable gas monitoring devices based on their large surface area, room temperature response and flexibility. Considering the demand on sensitivity and flexibility, innovated structural design is essential for realizing those applications. Here, we present a carbon nanotubes-anatase titanium dioxide (CNT/a-TiO2) film-based sensor by in situ hydrolysis and calcination. The CNT/a-TiO 2 sensor exhibits good sensitivity (41% resistance change in response to 50 ppm NO), fast and reversible response at room temperature, and high selectivity toward NO among several toxic gases including NH3, NO2, CH4 and H2S. Furthermore, the continuous CNT/a-TiO2 network, consisting of numerous flexible micro-areas of CNT segments interlaced with rigid CNT/a-TiO2 active segments, can endure complex deformations while maintaining their superior sensing properties. These lightweight CNT/a-TiO2 films with high performance and intrinsic flexibility films have application potential in future wearable electronics and gas monitoring devices.

Abstract:Recent progresses in flexible gas sensors based on carbon nanotube (CNT) films are thoroughly summarized, including the introduction of preparation, compounds, performance, and applications. Different types of sensitive materials loaded on CNT films and their gas sensing mechanism, preparation method, and response are reviewed. The sensitivity, selectivity, and flexibility of flexible gas sensors based on CNT films are also discussed. Flexible gas sensors, which can detect gas markers from the human body and hazardous gases from the environment, are attracting tremendous attention recently. Carbon nanotube (CNT) films are explored for flexible gas sensors due to its sensing ability at room temperature, strong adsorption for foreign molecules, mechanical robustness, and remarkable flexibility, and providing nanoscale surfaces with large surface area for various functional materials, etc. In this paper, recent advances in flexible gas sensors based on CNT films are reviewed. It discusses various strategies to design the structure of flexible CNT films and improve flexibility/stretchability performance. It generalizes different types of sensitive materials loaded for detected gases and analyzes the sensing mechanism of CNT films, with interface interactions and synergistic effects leading to an improvement in gas sensing. In addition, it discusses the preparation of CNT self‐standing films and the use of flexible substrates in transformation and assembly, in order to enable CNT films with improved flexible properties. CNT films show remarkable response and flexibility to hazard or greenhouse gases, such as ammonia, nitrogen dioxide, hydrogen, nitric oxide, carbon dioxide, and others. Summary and perspectives toward the future development of flexible gas sensors based on CNT films are proposed.

Exploiting Free-Standing p-CuO/n-TiO 2 Nanochannels as a Flexible Gas Sensor with High Sensitivity for H 2 S at Room Temperature

Abstract:Hydrogen sulfide (H2S) is an extremely hazardous gas and is harmful to human health and the environment. Here, we developed a flexible H2S gas-sensing device operated at room temperature (25 °C) based on CuO nanoparticles coated with free-standing TiO2-nanochannel membranes that were prepared by simple electrochemical anodization. Benefiting from the modulated conductivity of the CuO/TiO2 p–n heterojunction and a unique nanochannel architecture, the traditional thermal energy was innovatively replaced with UV irradiation (λ = 365 nm) to provide the required energy for triggering the sensing reactions of H2S. Importantly, upon exposure to H2S, the p–n heterojunction is destroyed and the newly formed ohmic contact forms an antiblocking layer at the interface of CuS and TiO2, thus making the sensing device active at room temperature. The resulting CuO/TiO2 membrane exhibited a notable detection sensitivity for H2S featuring a minimum detection limit of 3.0 ppm, a response value of 46.81% against 100 ppm H2S gas, and a rapid response and recovery time. This sensing membrane also demonstrated excellent durability, long-term stability, and wide-range response to a concentration of up to 400 ppm in the presence of 40% humidity as well as outstanding flexibility and negligible change in electrical measurements under various mechanical stability tests. Batch Fabrication of Ultrasensitive Carbon Nanotube Hydrogen Sensors with Sub-ppm Detection Limit.

Abstract:Carbon nanotube (CNT) has been considered as an ideal channel material for building highly sensitive gas sensors. However, the reported H2 sensors based on CNT always suffered from the low sensitivity or low production. We developed the technology to massively fabricate ultra-highly sensitive H2 sensors based on solution derived CNT network through comprehensive optimization of the CNT material, device structure, and fabrication process. In the H2 sensors, high semiconducting purity solution-derived CNT film sorted by poly[9-(1-octylonoyl)-9 H-carbazole-2,7-diyl](PCz) is used as the main channel, which is decorated with Pd nanoparticles as functionalization for capturing H2. Meanwhile, Ti contacts are used to form a Schottky barrier for enhancing transferred charge-induced resistance change, and then a response of resistance change by 3 orders of magnitude is achieved at room temperature under the concentration of ∼311 ppm with a very fast response time of approximately 7 s and a detection limit of 890 ppb, which is the highest response to date for CNT H2 sensors and the very first time to show the sub-ppm detection for H2 at room temperature. Furthermore, the detection limit concentration can be improved to 89 ppb at 100 °C. The batch fabrication of CNT film H2 sensors with ultra-high sensitivity and high uniformity is ready to promote CNT devices to application for the first time in some specialized field.

Abstract:Due to their high specific surface area and measurable change in conductance according to the chemical environment changes, carbon nanotubes (CNTs) have been proved to be an ideal material for next generation of gas sensor. However, before CNTs-based sensor can become a candidate for commercial implementation, there are still challenges including mass production of sensor arrays and improvement of sensor reproducibility. In this research, a high sensitivity CNT sheet-based gas sensor was fabricated, which can push forward the commercialization of CNT-based sensor. By controlling the reaction conditions during chemical vapor deposition (CVD) process, a spinnable CNT array was synthesized reproducibly. The CNT sheets were drawn from a sidewall of spinnable CNT array. CNT sheets were directly fixed onto Au electrodes and were heated up to 300°C for 2 h to oxidize amorphous carbon. Gas detection toward hydrogen gas was operated in a quartz tube chamber. With the change of gas concentration, the change in sensor resistances as response and recovery behavior was measured using a programmable electrometer. A sensitivity of 5% for 4% H2 was achieved at 200°C for pure CNT sheet and a sensitivity of 2.5% towards H2 gas at room temperature was achieved by Pd functionalization.
Room Temperature Operated Flexible La-ZnO/MWCNTs Sensor for ppb Level Carbon Monoxide Detection

Abstract:Room temperature detection of toxic gases with ppb level concentration experiences profound fabrication challenges. This work introduces CO gas sensor based on the unique La-ZnO/MWCNTs composite film developed on a flexible polyimide substrate, where interdigitated electrodes (IDEs) (thickness: 300 μm and spacing: 300 μm) were prepared using a laser induced carbonization technique. The synthesized composites were characterized using SEM, EDS, XRD, FTIR, and UV-Vis techniques. When compared to the La-ZnO composite, the addition of MWCNTs on the synthesized composite-based sensor exhibited ~9.65 times higher response than La-ZnO towards 100 ppm CO at 27°C. The response of the La-ZnO/MWCNTs composite sensors to 20 ppm CO was also tested at six different relative humidity (RH) levels ranging from 0% to 90% in increments of 20% RH. These sensors had a humidity tolerant properties, as evidenced by their responses to different humidity levels. Even when exposed to 90% RH, the sensor only showed a 13.081% reduction in response compared to 0% RH, indicating that it is a humidity tolerant sensor. Furthermore, the La-ZnO/MWCNTs sensor had excellent selectivity and could detect low CO concentrations of 100 ppb. As a result, the reported high-performance flexible sensor has a lot of potential and can be envisioned for the use in wearable devices to detect trace level CO gas at room temperature.

Abstract:Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) are considered a promising candidate for the detection of toxic gases because of their high specific surface area and excellent electrical and mechanical properties. However, the detecting performance of CNT-based detectors needs to be improved because covalently bonded CNTs are usually chemically inert. We prepared a nitrogen-doped single-wall CNT (SWCNT) film by means of gas-phase fluorination followed by thermal annealing in NH3. The doped nitrogen content could be changed in the range of 2.9–9.9 at%. The N-doped SWCNT films were directly used to construct flexible and transparent gas sensors, which can work at a low voltage of 0.01 V. It was found that their NO2 detection performance was closely related to their nitrogen content. With an optimum nitrogen content of 9.8 at%, a flexible sensor had a detection limit of 500 ppb at room temperature with good cycling ability and stability during bending.

T‐Cell Receptor Alpha Haplotype influences Vα Epitope Expression on both Cortisone‐Resistant Thymocytes and Lymph Node T Cells

Abstract:We have previously described a mouse strain congenic for the T‐cell receptor alpha chain locus (Tcra). The strain, B10.D2.C‐Tcraa/Bo, carries the Tcraa haplotype of BALB/c instead of the Tcraa haplotype normally found in B10.D2. By comparing B10.D2.C‐Tcraa and B10.D2 mice, we now show that the Tcra haplotype influences the frequencies of Vα8 epitope expression on T cells detected by the novel B21.14 monoclonal antibody (MoAb). This finding agrees well with our previous observation that Tcra haplotype influences the frequencies of expression of two other Vα8 epitopes, detected by the KT50 and KT65 MoAbs. The specificities of the three Vα8‐specific MoAbs were compared by scatter diagram analysis of staining frequencies obtained in individual mice. The B21.14 and KT50 MoAbs appear to have very similar specificities; these two MoAbs stain slightly more αβ T cells than the KT65 MoAb. Investigations with another novel MoAb, the Vα2‐specific B20.1, revealed that the Tcra haplotype also influences the frequency of Vα2 epitope expression. The effect of the Tcra haplotype on Vα2 epitope expression was evident not only among lymph node T cells but also among mature, cortisone‐resistant thymocytes. Thus, the influence of the Tcra haplotype is imprinted already in the thymus. The most likely explanations for Tcra haplotype dependency of Vα epitope expression are differing numbers of Vα‐gene segment subfamily members and/or allelic polymorphism. The significance of Tcra haplotype‐dependent Vα epitope expression is discussed.
Carbon Nanotubes-Cuo/sno2 Based Gas Sensor for Detecting H2S in Low Concentration

Abstract:Porous CuO/SnO2 nanofibers were prepared by co-dissolution and electrospinning, followed by annealing, and compounded with different amounts of carbon nanotubes (CNTs, 0-5 wt%). The performance of the composite based sensor was tested in different concentrations of H2S range from 0.1 to 0.5 ppm. The results showed that the gas sensor based CuO/SnO2 doped by CNTs (CNTs-CuO/SnO2) has a low optimum operating temperature, 40 °C, good behavior in detecting low concentration H2S, short response and recovery time (8.3 and 11.5 s, respectively). And at the same time, compared with other gases, 3 wt% CNTs-CuO/SnO2 composite nanomaterial had excellent selectivity to H2S at low concentrations. The prepared gas sensor had great advantages in detecting low concentration H2S.
Fully Flexible MXene-based Gas Sensor on Paper for Highly Sensitive Room-Temperature Nitrogen Dioxide Detection.

Abstract:Flexible chemiresistive gas sensors have attracted growing interest due to their capability in real-time and rapid detection of gas. However, the performance of gas sensors has long been hindered by the poor charge transfer ability between the conventional metal electrode and gas sensing semiconductors. Herein, for the first time, a fully flexible paper-based gas sensor integrated with the Ti3C2Tx-MXene nonmetallic electrode and the Ti3C2Tx/WS2 gas sensing film was designed to form Ohmic contact and Schottky heterojunction in a single gas sensing channel. Ti3C2Tx/WS2 has outstanding physical and chemical properties for both Ti3C2Tx and WS2 nanoflakes, showing high conductivity, effective charge transfer, and abundant active sites for gas sensing. The response of the gas sensor to NO2 (1 ppm) at room temperature is 15.2%, which is about 3.2 and 76.0 times as high as that of the Au interdigital electrode integrated with the Ti3C2Tx/WS2 sensor (4.8%) and the MXene electrode integrated with the Ti3C2Tx sensor (0.2%), respectively. Besides, this design performed at a limit of detection with 11.0 ppb NO2 gas and displayed excellent stability under high humidities. Based on first-principles density functional theory calculation results, the improvement of the gas sensing performance can be mainly attributed to the heterojunction regulation effect, work function matching, and suppressing metal-induced gap states. This work provides a new approach for the design of flexible gas sensors on paper with MXene-based conductive electrodes and gas sensing materials.

Abstract:In this study, we developed a gas sensing platform that can sensitively and specifically detect trace H2S in a high-humidity atmosphere at RT. Upon integrating a carbon nitride (C3N4) nanofilm and molybdenum dioxide (MoO2) nanosheets onto nanojungle-like TiO2 nanotube arrays (TiNTs), the fabricated chemiresistor showed rapid response (38 s)/recovery (58 s) abilities and remarkable detection sensitivity for H2S at concentrations down to 2 ppb, with an estimated detection limit of 1.13 ppb at RT and room-environmental light (REL). Importantly, the gas sensor exhibited satisfactory H2S sensing performance even in dark conditions with a response of 1.9 at 200 ppb. In this design, apart from the architectural advantages of the nanojungle-like TiNTs for accelerating the gas flow efficiency and the abundant sensing sites provided by the C3N4 film, the MoO2 nanosheets act as the essential electron pump not only for the H2S response but also for the subsequent recovery process in air. After employing the MoO2 pump onto C3N4/TiNTs, the response time and recovery time of the system are shortened to ∼35 and ∼11%, respectively. Moreover, we demonstrated the good performance of the flexible gas sensor in detecting trace H2S in human exhaled breath with good humidity resistance. These results highlight the possibility of designing chemiresistors operating in RT and REL conditions and to use these environmentally friendly TiO2-based sensors in real applications.
Flexible and Lightweight Ti3C2Tx MXene@Pd Colloidal Nanoclusters Paper Film As Novel H2 Sensor.

Abstract:Rational and smart design of hydrogen (H2) sensors especially those featured with flexibility and light weight is highly desirable, to meet the requirements for future development of portable H2 sensors. In this work, we demonstrate a novel paper film H2 sensor employing Ti3C2Tx MXene nanosheets with Pd colloidal nanoclusters (Pd CNC) as the activator. The MXene@ Pd CNC paper film was facilely prepared via an all-colloidal solution-based vacuum-filtration process, which is flexible, light-weight and endowed with a compact, glossy surface. The as-obtained MXene@ Pd CNC film sensor displayed moderate H2 response at room temperature at either flat or bent states. Specially, the MXene@Pd CNC film sensor delivered a response time of (32 ± 7) s and a sensitivity of S = (23.0 ± 4.0)%@4% H2. In addition, the MXene@Pd CNC sensor enabled "in-situ-mode" H2 detection directly along a piece of paper film with desired size. The strong H2 adsorption into lattice of ultrafine Pd CNC altered the work function thus induced the electron doping of MXene, which explained the gas sensing mechanism. Therefore, the facilely designed MXene@Pd CNC sensor is believed to contribute to development of future portable and wearable sensing electronics.
Flexible Room-Temperature Ammonia Gas Sensors Based on PANI-MWCNTs/PDMS Film for Breathing Analysis and Food Safety

Abstract:Gas sensors have played a critical role in healthcare, atmospheric environmental monitoring, military applications and so on. In particular, flexible sensing devices are of great interest, benefitting from flexibility and wearability. However, developing flexible gas sensors with a high sensitivity, great stability and workability is still challenging. In this work, multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) were grown on polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) films, which were further modified with polyaniline (PANI) using a simple chemical oxidation synthesis. The superior flexibility of the PANI-MWCNTs/PDMS film enabled a stable initial resistance value, even under bending conditions. The flexible sensor showed excellent NH3 sensing performances, including a high response (11.8 ± 0.2 for 40 ppm of NH3) and a low limit of detection (10 ppb) at room temperature. Moreover, the effect of a humid environment on the NH3 sensing performances was investigated. The results show that the response of the sensor is enhanced under high humidity conditions because water molecules can promote the adsorption of NH3 on the PANI-MWCNTs/PDMS films. In addition, the PANI-MWCNTs/PDMS film sensor had the abilities of detecting NH3 in the simulated breath of patients with kidney disease and the freshness of shrimp. These above results reveal the potential application of the PANI-MWCNTs/PDMS sensor for monitoring NH3 in human breath and food.

Abstract:The present correspondence develops an algorithm for tracking the motion of planar curvilinear moving objects from a sequence of scenes produced by a television camera. The shape of the objects is unrestricted except that holes may not be present. The shape of the objects may vary slightly from scene to scene. The linear and angular velocities of the objects are computed, and a model is created and updated each time a new scene is processed. Furthermore, the algorithm generates a prediction of each successive input scene. The algorithm is implemented in the computer language Lisp, and experimental results are presented.
