Abstract:Pressure sensors are essential in precise robotic operations because they can provide force feedback information. In this paper, we propose a soft piezoresistive pressure sensor consisting of a top porous conductive polymer composite (PCPC) layer and a bottom interdigital electrode (IDE) layer, demonstrating a high sensitivity up to 58.60% <tex xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">$\text{kPa}^{-1}$</tex> and a hysteresis error as low as 3.18%. Devices with different pore sizes and IDE geometric parameters are fabricated and experimentally characterized. Results show the dependence of the sensor performance on porosity and IDE configuration, which is consistent with theoretical analysis. The proposed technique enables a customized design of soft piezoresistive pressure sensors for different sensing ranges. As a practical demonstration, the proposed pressure sensor is integrated with a soft robotic gripper to perform delicate manipulation tasks.

Abstract:Flexible high-sensitivity pressure sensors have seen rapid growth in the last few years in applications like electronic skin, smart wearables and medical health monitoring. In this work, we develop a high-flexibility capacitive pressure sensor design based on a hierarchical, micro-pyramid-structured dielectric layer of polydimethanes (PDMS). The goal of this design is to achieve low-hysteresis capacitive pressure sensors with increased sensitivity and reduced response time. To optimize the performance of the proposed pressure sensor, we designed and fabricated several different micro-pyramid structures on the silicon template using standard photolithography and anisotropic etching. As a result, the pressure sensor with a hierarchical micro-pyramid structure achieved through graphic transfer has the best performance, with a sensitivity of up to 2.64 kPa -1 ( 0-2 kPa), a response time of 45 ms, a low limit of detection (LoD) of < 8 Pa, and high stability over at least 1200 loading cycles. As a result of these remarkable performance features, the pressure sensor proposed can be effectively utilized for the detection of physiological signals as well as mechanical pressure which can be widely used in the fields of motion sensing, health monitoring and intelligent robots.

Abstract:In recent times, polymer-based flexible pressure sensors have been attracting a lot of attention because of their various applications. A highly sensitive and flexible sensor is suggested, capable of being attached to the human body, based on a three-dimensional dielectric elastomeric structure of polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) and microsphere composite. This sensor has maximal porosity due to macropores created by sacrificial layer grains and micropores generated by microspheres pre-mixed with PDMS, allowing it to operate at a wider pressure range (~150 kPa) while maintaining a sensitivity (of 0.124 kPa−1 in a range of 0~15 kPa) better than in previous studies. The maximized pores can cause deformation in the structure, allowing for the detection of small changes in pressure. In addition to exhibiting a fast rise time (~167 ms) and fall time (~117 ms), as well as excellent reproducibility, the fabricated pressure sensor exhibits reliability in its response to repeated mechanical stimuli (2.5 kPa, 1000 cycles). As an application, we develop a wearable device for monitoring repeated tiny motions, such as the pulse on the human neck and swallowing at the Adam’s apple. This sensory device is also used to detect movements in the index finger and to monitor an insole system in real-time.

Abstract:In this study, a flexible pressure sensor is fabricated using polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) with a concentric circle pattern (CCP) obtained through a fused deposition modeling (FDM)-type three-dimensional (3D) printer and poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene):poly(styrenesulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS) as the active layer. Through layer-by-layer additive manufacturing, the CCP surface is generated from a thin cone model with a rough surface by the FDM-type 3D printer. A novel compression method is employed to convert the cone shape into a planar microstructure above the glass transition temperature of a polylactic acid (PLA) filament. To endow the CCP surface with conductivity, PDMS is used to replicate the compressed PLA, and PEDOT:PSS is coated by drop-casting. The size of the CCP is controlled by changing the printing layer height (PLH), which is one of the 3D printing parameters. The sensitivity increases as the PLH increases, and the pressure sensor with a 0.16 mm PLH exhibits outstanding sensitivity (160 kPa −1 ), corresponding to a linear pressure range of 0–0.577 kPa with a good linearity of R 2 = 0.978, compared to other PLHs. This pressure sensor exhibits stable and repeatable operation under various pressures and durability under 6.56 kPa for 4000 cycles. Finally, monitoring of various health signals such as those for the wrist pulse, swallowing, and pronunciation of words is demonstrated as an application. These results support the simple fabrication of a highly sensitive, flexible pressure sensor for human health monitoring.

Abstract:Flexible pressure sensors attract wide attentions in recent years for their significant applications in wearable electronics and health monitoring. It is strongly desired that a pressure sensor possesses both low detection limit and wide measuring capability, covering a broad pressure range from Pa to hundred kPa, to meet diverse demands in different applications. This paper proposes a novel flexible pressure sensor based on thermosensation, using a multilayered and graded-porosity polydimethylsiloxane/silver nanoparticle sponge as piezo-thermic transduction. The sensor exhibits a high sensitivity, a low detection limit of 4.1 Pa, and a wide measuring range up to 200 kPa, which leads to a high range-to-limit ratio of about 50 000. The pressure sensor is monolithically integrated with a temperature sensor and dissolves temperature-compensation. The unique combination of properties makes it feasible to monitor various human signals from subtle wrist pulse to finger tapping pressure and foot stepping pressure by a single device, which shows competent capabilities for multifarious applications in wearable electronics and health monitoring.

Abstract:The development of highly sensitive pressure sensors with a low-cost and facile fabrication technique is desirable for electronic skins and wearable sensing devices. Here a low-cost and facile fabrication strategy to obtain multiscale-structured elastomeric electrodes and a highly sensitive and robust flexible pressure sensor is presented. The principles of spontaneous buckle formation of the PDMS surface and the embedding of silver nanowires are used to fabricate the multiscale-structured elastomeric electrode. By laminating the multiscale-structured elastomeric electrode onto the dielectric layer/bottom electrode template, the pressure sensor can be obtained. The pressure sensor is based on the capacitive sensing mechanism and shows high sensitivity (>3.8 kPa(-1)), fast response and relaxation time (<150 ms), high bending stability and high cycle stability. The fabrication process can be easily scaled up to produce pressure sensor arrays and they can detect the spatial distribution of the applied pressure. It is also demonstrated that the fingertip pressure sensing device can sense the pressure distribution of each finger, when grabbing an object.

Abstract:Fabricating flexible pressure sensors with high sensitivity in a broad pressure range is still a challenge. Herein, a flexible pressure sensor with engineered microstructures on polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) film is designed. The high performance of the sensor derives from its unique pyramid‐wall‐grid microstructure (PWGM). A square array of dome‐topped pyramids and crossed strengthening walls on the film forms a multiheight hierarchical microstructure. Two pieces of PWGM flexible PDMS film, stacked face‐to‐face, form a piezoresistive sensor endowed with ultrahigh sensitivity across a very broad pressure range. The sensitivity of the device is as high as 383 665.9 and 269 662.9 kPa−1 in the pressure ranges 0–1.6 and 1.6–6 kPa, respectively. In the higher pressure range of 6.1–11 kPa, the sensitivity is 48 689.1 kPa−1, and even in the very high pressure range of 11–56 kPa, it stays at 1266.8 kPa−1. The pressure sensor possesses excellent bending and torsional strain detection properties, is mechanically durable, and has potential applications in wearable biosensing for healthcare. In addition, 2 × 2 and 4 × 4 sensor arrays are prepared and characterized, suggesting the possibility of manufacturing a flexible tactile sensor.

Abstract:A few heteroleptic, charge-separated heterobimetallic, and polymeric alkali metalate complexes of 1,2,4-diazaphospholide lanthanum(iii), cerium(iii), neodymium(iii), praseodymium(iii), and samarium(iii) were simply prepared via the metathesis reaction of MCl3 (THF)m (m = 1-2) and K[3,5-R2dp] ([3,5-R2dp](-) = 3,5-di-substituent-1,2,4-diazaphospholide; R = tBu, Ph) in a varied ratio (1 : 3, 1 : 4, and 1 : 5, respectively) at room temperature in tetrahydrofuran. All the complexes were fully characterized by (1)H, (13)C{(1)H}, (31)P{(1)H}, IR, and X-ray single crystal diffraction analysis despite their paramagnetism (excluding La(iii) complexes). The structures of the complexes were found to feature varied coordination modes. The magnetic properties of several compounds were studied by magnetic susceptibility, and the complexes presented the magnetic moments close to or lower than the theoretical values for the free ions in the trivalent oxidation states (Pr(3+), Nd(3+)).

Abstract:Wearable pressure sensors with high sensitivity, broad dynamic response range, and low detection limit are highly desirable to enable the applications in electronic skins and soft robotics. In this work, we report a high-performance wearable pressure sensor based on microstructured polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS)/Ag and rough polyimide/Au interdigital electrodes. By tailoring the touchpoints, the resulting pressure sensors show ultrahigh sensitivity (259.32 kPa-1 in the range of 0-2.5 kPa), broad dynamic response range (0-54 kPa), fast response (∼200 μs), and low detection limit (0.36 Pa). Furthermore, the effect of different sensor structural configurations, PDMS geometrical feature, and Ag thickness on the performance of the pressure sensors are systematically investigated. Thanks to these merits, the fabricated pressure sensor is capable of real-time monitoring pulse wave and can act as artificial skin for robot hand to detect weak pressure changes, leading to the great application promise in the fields of biomedical, real-time health monitoring, and intelligent robot.

Abstract:Abstract Three most common methods for preparing PEDOT (poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene)) are studied, including vapor phase polymerization (VPP), in-situ dipping (ISD) and solution deposition (SD) techniques. The PEDOT coated nonwoven fabric (PEDOT@NWF) composites were successfully fabricated via these three processes and have been proven to be conductive and equipped with piezoresistive properties. For each preparation method, factors that may affect product properties, such as concentrations of reagents, reaction temperature, reaction time, etc were explored to summarize the optimal parameters. The PEDOT@NWF composites prepared via different fabrication techniques were analyzed and compared through a series of tests and characterizations. The sensing performance of as-prepared pressure sensors are also been studied. The experimental results demonstrate that PEDOT@NWF prepared by VPP method (PEDOT@NWF-VPP) has the fastest response time (80 ms) and recovery time (40 ms), the composite prepared by ISD method (PEDOT@NWF-ISD) has the highest sensitivity for the pressure range less than 5 kPa (21.162 kPa −1 ) and long-term cycle stability (over 5000 cycles). Sensor utilized PEDOT@NWF-ISD as the piezoresistive layer was assembled and used to detect small pressure such as voice vibrations and air flow, implying that this designed pressure sensor has promising potential in the application of wearable electronic devices and healthcare monitors.

Abstract:Flexible pressure sensors with a high sensitivity in the lower zone of a subtle-pressure regime has shown great potential in the fields of electronic skin, human–computer interaction, wearable devices, intelligent prosthesis, and medical health. Adding microstructures on the dielectric layer on a capacitive pressure sensor has become a common and effective approach to enhance the performance of flexible pressure sensors. Here, we propose a method to further dramatically increase the sensitivity by adding elastic pyramidal microstructures on one side of the electrode and using a thin layer of a dielectric in a capacitive sensor. The sensitivity of the proposed device has been improved from 3.1 to 70.6 kPa−1 compared to capacitive sensors having pyramidal microstructures in the same dimension on the dielectric layer. Moreover, a detection limit of 1 Pa was achieved. The finite element analysis performed based on electromechanical sequential coupling simulation for hyperelastic materials indicates that the microstructures on electrode are critical to achieve high sensitivity. The influence of the duty ratio of the micro-pyramids on the sensitivity of the sensor is analyzed by both simulation and experiment. The durability and robustness of the device was also demonstrated by pressure testing for 2000 cycles.

Abstract:Herein, a flexible pressure sensor with high sensitivity was created using a dielectric layer featuring a hierarchical pyramid microstructure, both in simulation and fabrication. The capacitive pressure sensor comprises a hierarchically arranged dielectric layer made of polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) with pyramid microstructures, positioned between copper electrodes at the top and bottom. The achievement of superior sensing performance is highly contingent upon the thickness of the dielectric layer, as indicated by both empirical findings and finite-element analysis. Specifically, the capacitive pressure sensor, featuring a dielectric layer thickness of 0.5 mm, exhibits a remarkable sensitivity of 0.77 kPa -1 within the pressure range below 1 kPa. It also demonstrates an impressive response time of 55 ms and recovery time of 42 ms, along with a low detection limit of 8 Pa. Furthermore, this sensor showcases exceptional stability and reproducibility with up to 1,000 cycles. Considering its exceptional achievements, the pressure sensor has been effectively utilized for monitoring physiological signals, sign language gestures, and vertical mechanical force exerted on objects. Additionally, a 5 × 5 sensor array was fabricated to accurately and precisely map the shape and position of objects. The pressure sensor with advanced performance shows broad potential in electronic skin applications.

Abstract:Pressure sensing is an important function of electronic skin devices. The development of pressure sensors that can mimic and surpass the subtle pressure sensing properties of natural skin requires the rational design of materials and devices. Here we present an ultra-sensitive resistive pressure sensor based on an elastic, microstructured conducting polymer thin film. The elastic microstructured film is prepared from a polypyrrole hydrogel using a multiphase reaction that produced a hollow-sphere microstructure that endows polypyrrole with structure-derived elasticity and a low effective elastic modulus. The contact area between the microstructured thin film and the electrodes increases with the application of pressure, enabling the device to detect low pressures with ultra-high sensitivity. Our pressure sensor based on an elastic microstructured thin film enables the detection of pressures of less than 1Pa and exhibits a short response time, good reproducibility, excellent cycling stability and temperature-stable sensing.

Abstract:Wearable pressure sensors have attracted widespread attention in recent years because of their great potential in human healthcare applications such as physiological signals monitoring. A desirable pressure sensor should possess the advantages of high sensitivity, a simple manufacturing process, and good stability. Here, we present a highly sensitive, simply fabricated wearable resistive pressure sensor based on three-dimensional microstructured carbon nanowalls (CNWs) embedded in a polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) substrate. The method of using unpolished silicon wafers as templates provides an easy approach to fabricate the irregular microstructure of CNWs/PDMS electrodes, which plays a significant role in increasing the sensitivity and stability of resistive pressure sensors. The sensitivity of the CNWs/PDMS pressure sensor with irregular microstructures is as high as 6.64 kPa−1 in the low-pressure regime, and remains fairly high (0.15 kPa−1) in the high-pressure regime (~10 kPa). Both the relatively short response time of ~30 ms and good reproducibility over 1000 cycles of pressure loading and unloading tests illustrate the high performance of the proposed device. Our pressure sensor exhibits a superior minimal limit of detection of 0.6 Pa, which shows promising potential in detecting human physiological signals such as heart rate. Moreover, it can be turned into an 8 × 8 pixels array to map spatial pressure distribution and realize array sensing imaging.

Abstract:Flexible, wearable pressure sensors offer numerous benefits, including superior sensing capabilities, a lightweight and compact design, and exceptional conformal properties, making them highly sought after in various applications including medical monitoring, human–computer interactions, and electronic skins. Because of their excellent characteristics, such as simple fabrication, low power consumption, and short response time, capacitive pressure sensors have received widespread attention. As a flexible polymer material, polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) is widely used in the preparation of dielectric layers for capacitive pressure sensors. The Young's modulus of the flexible polymer can be effectively decreased through the synergistic application of sacrificial template and laser ablation techniques, thereby improving the functionality of capacitive pressure sensors. In this study, a novel sensor was introduced. Its dielectric layer was developed through a series of processes, including the use of a sacrificial template method using NaCl microparticles and subsequent CO2 laser ablation. This porous PDMS dielectric layer, featuring an array of holes, was then sandwiched between two flexible electrodes to create a capacitive pressure sensor. The sensor demonstrates a sensitivity of 0.694 kPa−1 within the pressure range of 0–1 kPa and can effectively detect pressures ranging from 3 Pa to 200 kPa. The sensor demonstrates stability for up to 500 cycles, with a rapid response time of 96 ms and a recovery time of 118 ms, coupled with a low hysteresis of 6.8%. Furthermore, our testing indicates that the sensor possesses limitless potential for use in detecting human physiological activities and delivering signals.

Abstract:Flexible pressure sensors have received wide attention due to their potential applications in wearable electronics and electronic skins. It is still a challenge to manufacture high-sensitivity flexible pressure sensors in a low-cost and efficient way. In this study, a low-cost and simple method for preparing a flexible pressure sensor with porous structure based on physical foaming is proposed. The sensitivity of the flexible pressure sensor is 0.796 kPa −1 (applied pressure ≤ 2 kPa). In addition, the flexible pressure sensor has a low limit of detection of 4 Pa and a fast response time of 65 ms, and its performance remains unchanged after 1000 loading/unloading tests. This high performance enables flexible pressure sensors to detect touch and limb movement. Considering the good performance of the device, we expect that the sensor will provide broad application prospects in the fields of smart electronics and artificial intelligence.

The micro-morphological engineering of sensing materials will greatly contribute to the design and development of flexible piezoresistive sensors. The structure is assembled from polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS)/carbon nanotube (CNT) films with microdome arrays and thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU)/Ti3C2Tx MXene nanofiber films. The multi-layer interlocking structure not only significantly increases the contact area and sensitivity between layers, but also greatly improves mechanical and electrical stability. The results show that the PDMS/CNT-TPU/MXene pressure sensor has a high sensitivity of 82.17 kPa-1, a wide pressure detection range of 0 ~ 25 kPa, an extremely short response and recovery time of 100 ms, and an excellent dynamic cycling stability of more than 2000 cycles. In addition, the sensor has been used to perform comprehensive human motion monitoring, such as joint flexion, gait monitoring, and gesture recognition, demonstrating its potential for applications in health monitoring, wearable devices, and human-computer interaction.

Abstract:Although capacitive pressure sensors have been widely used in tactile sensing, human-computer interface, and medical applications, the viscoelastic and incompressible characteristics of the dielectric layer continue to be the primary limiting factors for achieving high sensitivity and fast response times. In this study, we propose a new flexible capacitive pressure sensor (FCPS), with a bionic honeycomb structure as a dielectric layer structure via 3-D printing and optimize its architecture through finite element simulation. Aluminum oxide (Al2O3) nanoparticles with a high dielectric constant were chosen to be doped into the PDMS to form the dielectric layer. Owing to the optimized bionic honeycomb structure and the incorporation of high-dielectric material, the PDMS/Al2O3-based flexible capacitive pressure sensor (PAFPS) exhibits high sensitivity (~1.75 kPa<inline-formula> <tex-math notation="LaTeX">$^{-{1}}$ </tex-math></inline-formula> in the range of 0–1 kPa and 0.045 kPa<inline-formula> <tex-math notation="LaTeX">$^{-{1}}$ </tex-math></inline-formula> in the range of 1–200 kPa) and rapid response time (~37.5 ms), which represents a significant improvement compared to previous reports. Furthermore, the successful application of PAFPS in various scenarios has provided valuable insights for the advancement of next-generation wearable electronic devices.

Abstract:In order to enhance the sensitivity of elastomers, pores were integrated into their structure. These pores facilitate the adjustment of thickness in response to external pressure variations, thereby improving the sensitivity of pressure sensors. Pores were introduced by emulsifying immiscible polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) and water with a surfactant. By controlling the water content in the PDMS and water emulsion, we controlled the size, density, uniformity, and spatial distribution (2D or 3D) of the pores within the PDMS matrix. The presence of these pores significantly improved the sensitivity of PDMS under low external pressure conditions compared to high pressures. Specifically, porous PDMS exhibited approximately 10-times greater sensitivity under low-pressure conditions than non-porous PDMS. The effectiveness of porous PDMS was demonstrated through dynamic loading and unloading detection of a small Lego toy and monitoring of human heartbeats. These results highlight the efficacy of our pressure sensor based on porous PDMS, which is fabricated through a simple and cost-effective process using a PDMS and water emulsion. This approach is highly suitable for developing the ability to detect applied pressures or contact forces.

Abstract:Capacitive pressure sensors are an important part of wearable human health applications. The fabrication of highly sensitive flexible pressure sensors in a low cost and efficient way remains a tough issue. Herein, a rapid-response and highly sensitive capacitive pressure sensor is developed based on compressible wrinkled microstructures through a low-cost and scalable solution approach. The sensor is constructed of double layers of well-defined polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) structures with silver-nanowires (Ag NWs) electrodes. This capacitive pressure sensor allows the sensitive detection of both static and dynamic external stimuli. When the double layer PDMS wrinkled direction is perpendicular to each other, the prepared sensor possesses a high sensitivity of 3.19 kpa −1 , a low detectable pressure limit (1.0 Pa), a fast response time (< 100 ms), and a wide pressure range. The sensor also possesses high robustness: it can be tested for at least 1800 cycles without performance deterioration. We further demonstrate this highly sensitive pressure sensor in a wearable application.
