Abstract:Simple solutions of alkali metal salts of 1,2,4-triazole (TrizM) in polyethyelene glycol (PEG) and dimethylsulfoxide (DMSO) were prepared and assessed for CO2 capture. These aprotic heterocyclic anions (AHAs) containing solutions exhibit excellent CO2 capture performances. The TrizM salts absorb CO2 chemically in a 1:1 stoichiometry. What is more attractive is that the CO2 chemical absorption enthalpies are as low as -33 similar to -21 kJ mol(-1), close to that of physical absorption by traditional ionic liquids (ILs). This makes regeneration of the absorbents highly energy-saving. The TrizM-PEG solution has a steady CO2 capture performance due to the nonvolatility of PEG, and therefore, it is durable for CO2 capture. In comparison, the TrizM-DMSO solution has a higher absorption capacity (120 mg/g solution) because of the higher solubility of TrizM. Such simple and inexpensive solutions show new potential as promising candidates for highly efficient, energy saving, and economical CO2 catchers.
A Water-Lean Triazole Ionic Liquid Biphasic Solvent for Energy-Efficient CO2 Capture Through Reversible Polarity and Intermolecular Hydrogen Bonding

Abstract:The development of novel functionalized solvents with low volatility, high mass capacity, and low energy consumption for CO2 capture technology is still a significant challenge. In this study, two triazole-functionalized ionic liquids (TFILs) were designed and combined with imidazole organic solvents as phase separation agents to form novel biphasic solvents for CO2 capture. When the mass ratio of [N-2222][1,2,4-Triz]/1-methylimidazole (N-MI) was 5:4, the CO2 capacity reached 0.112 g of CO2/g of solvent at 40 degrees C and 1 bar, in which the CO2-rich phase accounts for 95% of the total CO2 capacity and 60% of the total volume. Meanwhile, the energy consumption for CO2 desorption of [N-2222][1,2,4-Triz]/N-MI (5:4) was 1.29 GJ/ton CO2, which is 65.78% lower than that of 30 wt % MEA aqueous solution. The results indicated that [N-2222][1,2,4-Triz] can react with CO2 to produce carbamate that existed in the CO2-rich phase. Therefore, the original homogeneous liquid was transformed into liquid-solid phase during CO2 absorption due to the great difference in polarity between imidazole organic solvents and carbamate products, as well as strong intermolecular hydrogen bonding between carbamate products. This study provides useful guidance for designing novel phase-change solvents with high CO2 absorption performance and low energy consumption.
Highly Efficient and Reversible Carbon Dioxide Capture by Carbanion-Functionalized Ionic Liquids.

Abstract:Due to the active unstable nature of carbon anions, it is challenging to develop carbanion-functionalized ionic liquids (ILs) for efficient and reversible carbon dioxide (CO2) capture. Here, a series of carbanion-based ILs with large conjugated structures were designed and a promising system was achieved through tuning the nucleophilicity of carbanions and screening the cation. The ideal carbanion-functionalized IL trihexyl(tetradecyl)phosphonium N,N-diethycyanoacetoamide ([P66614][DECA]) showed equimolar chemisorption of CO2 ( up to 0.98 mol CO2/mol IL) under ambient pressure and excellent absorption rate. What ' s more, the combined CO2 can be released easily, leading to excellent reversibility due to high stability of anion conjugated structures. More importantly, the presence of water had negligible effect on the absorption capacity, which makes it potential to be applied to the CO2 capture in industrial flue gas. The chemisorption mechanism of the carbanion and CO2 was confirmed by spectroscopic investigations and DFT calculations, where carboxylic acid product was formed through proton transfer after the carbanions reacted with CO2. Considering that high capacity, quick rate as well as excellent reversibility, these carbanion-functionalized ILs should certainly represent competitive candidates for further scale up and practical application in CO2 capture. Abstract:An ionic liquid(IL),1-(1-aminopropyl)-3-methylimidazolium bromide,was synthesized using N-methylimidazole and 3-bromopropylamine hydrobromide as raw materials,the final yield was 90.1%,the bromide content was 0.980 mol Br/mol IL and the amine content was 0.948 molNH2/mol IL.The product was characterized by 1HNMR,(13)CNMR,IR and MS.Experimental result indicated that the IL is an effective absorbent of CO2.The solubility of CO2 in mass fraction 45% aqueous solution of the IL was up to 0.444 mol CO2/mol IL at 40 ℃ and 106 kPa,very close to the theoretical maximum loading(0.5 mol CO2/mol IL).The absorption process could be reversed under vacuum at 90 ℃,and the absorption efficiency of the IL has little observable loss after repeated use.

Abstract:In petroleum industry, the release of more and more carbon dioxide (CO2) brings greenhouse effect and even results in climate change, leading CO2 capture to become an urgent issue. To design ideal and effective absorbent, interaction mechanism for CO2 capture was systematically investigated in a series of imidazolium-based ionic liquids (ILs). The potential effects of alkyl side chain, electron-philic halogen (F, Cl, Br) atom(s), electron-denoting groups OH and NH2 (bound on cation or/and anion), and water solvent were disclosed on CO2 capture using CAM-B3LYP functional with SMD-GIL solvation model, and the most potential green effective absorbent was predicted. This work provides an explicit idea and theoretical basis about the design of desired IL for CO2 capture. Graphical abstract In present work, no/halogen/amino/hydroxy-functionalized imidazolium tetrafluoroborate ILs were studied for CO2 absorption at the CAM-B3LYP/6-311++G** level of theory by SMD-GIL solvation model. NH2 is more potent group in absorbing CO2 than halogen and OH, and its number is proportional to the adsorption capacity of IL. A potentially high-capacity CO2 absorbent with four NH2 groups was predicted. In addition, the mixture of water could further enhance such chemical absorption by lowering the activation energy barriers and viscosity of IL.

Abstract:Developing carbon dioxide (CO2) capture technologies has caused worldwide interest because of the baneful influence of CO2 on climate change as a main greenhouse gas. Ionic liquids (ILs) are considered as potential absorbents for CO2 capture because of their unique properties compared with current amine-based solvents. In this work, new dianionic-functionalized IL-based solvents, bi(1,8-diazabicyclo[5.4.0]undec-7-ene) dimethylhydantoin/ethylene glycol ([(DBUH)2][Dhyd]/EG), were designed and prepared for efficient and reversible chemisorption of CO2. Among the absorbents, [(DBUH)2][Dhyd]/EG with a mass ratio of 5:5 exhibited not only a high CO2 absorption capacity of 0.11 g CO2/g absorbent at 20 °C and 0.10 MPa but also good recyclability. Spectroscopic characterizations and simulation calculations confirmed that the superior CO2 capacity may be attributed to the simultaneous reaction of CO2 with both the [Dhyd]2– anion and deprotonated EG. Abstract:A strategy for improving CO2 capture by imidazolium ionic liquids (ILs) through a reduction in the formation of carbene CO2 complex was reported. The carbene CO2 complex content in CO2 capture by imidazolium ILs was determined by a quantitative NMR method, and the carbene CO2 complex formation was decreased through a reduction in the basicity of the anion and an enlargement in the steric hindrance of the cation. Thus, both enhanced absorption capacity and improved desorption were achieved, where an ideal IL, [Ipmim] [Triz], exhibited a very high capacity of 0.21 g of CO2/g of IL and excellent reversibility.

Abstract:A sort of functional hydrophilic ionic liquid(ILs),],was prepared by the green synthesis route.Aiming at reduction of operational costs for CO2 absorption and regeneration and reuse of absorbent,experiments on CO2 capture and absorbent-desorption for regeneration and reuse were carried out.Experimental results showed that specific capacity of CO2(on the basis of complex absorbent or ILs component) changed with the concentration of ILs in the complex absorbent.In the initial stage,CO2 absorption rates changed obviously with the concentration of ILs,and an appropriate ratio of complex absorbent was obtained(mass ratio of ILs to water was 1.38∶1).Moreover,continuous CO2 capture and absorbent regeneration experiments were carried out with a pilot scale equipment for absorption enhanced by super gravity field and desorption via counter-current contact under vacuum or by heating with water-based ionic liquid solution,improved hot potassium carbonate and activated complex alcamines as absorbent respectively.The results indicated good absorption for CO2 capture with water-based ionic liquid solution,improved hot potassium carbonate and activated complex alcamines under super gravity field,and the absorption rates for CO2 were 98%,96% and 90% respectively.Adsorbent could be regenerated and reused after CO2 removal under vacuum or by heating.Water-based ionic liquid solution desorption under vacuum and at normal temperature was more practicable.

Abstract:The strong chemisorption of CO2 is always accompanied by a high absorption enthalpy, and traditional methods to reduce the absorption enthalpy lead to decreased CO2 capacities. Through the introduction of a large π-conjugated structure into the anion, a dual-tuning approach for the improvement of CO2 capture by anion-functionalized ionic liquids (ILs) resulted in a high capacity of up to 0.96 molCO2 mol-1IL and excellent reversibility. The increased capacity and improved desorption were supported by quantum chemical calculations, spectroscopic investigations, and thermogravimetric analysis. The increased capacity may be a result of the strengthened dynamic covalent bonds in these π-electron-conjugated structures through anion aggregation upon the uptake of CO2 , and the improved desorption originates from the charge dispersion of interaction sites through the large π-electron delocalization. These results provide important insights into effective strategies for CO2 capture.

Abstract:Anhydrous “Dry Ionic Liquids” (D-ILs) were prepared by wrapping task functionalized ionic liquid solutions of ethylene glycol or glycerol with hydrophobic silica nanoparticles, to form micron-sized particles with fluidity for rapid capture of CO2. The anhydrous D-ILs not only play the advantages of two substances: the stability of ionic liquid and the micro-size of “Dry matter”, but also effectively overcome the shortcomings of high viscosity of ILs and the water loss of dry matters containing aqueous solutions. Physical properties of these D-ILs, including true density, specific surface area and mean size were determined to evaluate the influence of the solution concentration on the micron particle morphology. The CO2 capture capacity and capture rate of D-ILs were also investigated and compared with those of the corresponding solutions. It is confirmed that the D-ILs exhibit significantly high speed for CO2 capture, excellent absorption capacity and considerable regeneration efficiency. The micron structure of D-ILs can completely overcome the resistance of high viscosity and thereby plays out the chemical characteristics of task specific ionic liquids (TSILs).

Abstract:Capturing and storing carbon dioxide (CO2) is now of concern. This work presents a task-specific ionic liquid (TSIL), triethylbutylammonium acetate ([N-2224][CH3COO]), for the purpose of trapping CO2 instead of the commonly used organic amine solutions. Since [N-2224][CH3COO] has a hydrophilic nature, the CO2 dissolution behavior into [N-2224][CH3COO]-nH(2)O complexes has been investigated in detail, including the absorption rate, absorption capacity, and the ability of repeating absorption. The solubilities of CO2 into[N-2224][CH3COO]-1H(2)O at 0 degrees C, 25 degrees C, 40 degrees C, and 60 degrees C from (0.007 up to 30) bar are presented. The results show strong evidence that [N-2224][CH3COO]-1H(2)O is an excellent reversible absorbent for CO2, and the recovered [N-2224][CH3COO]-1H(2)O maintains the same absorption capacity and absorption rate. The CO2 absorption into [N-2224][CH3COO]-nH(2)O mixtures at 25 degrees C and pressures up to 30 bar is also studied. It is elucidated that the absorption capacity decreases with the content of water and the rise of operational temperature. The equilibrium constant, Henry's law constant, overall rate constant, and activation energy are also calculated from the experimental data. All evidence indicates that [N-2224] [CH3COO]-nH(2)O with low viscosity may have potential to be used as good absorbents for CO2 capture.

Abstract:For an ideal absorbent for CO2 capture from flue gas, there are some key features including easy preparation, high stability, low absorption enthalpy, high capacity at high temperature and excellent reversibility. Herein, several polyamine-functionalized ionic liquids (ILs) were easily prepared from cheap polyamines and lithium salts, which exhibited significantly improved stability due to the presence of multisite coordinating interactions. The viscosity was reduced by introducing polyalcohol-based ILs, leading to polyamine-based hybrid ILs. Interestingly, these polyamine-based hybrid ILs exhibited high CO2 capacity (4.09 mmol/g, 0.1 bar) at high temperature (80 degrees C) and excellent reversibility in the presence of H2O and O-2, which is superior to many other good absorbents. Moreover, these ILs also showed good performance for CO2 capture from stimulated air (2.10 mmol/g, 380 ppm). We believe that this method with easy preparation, low cost, high efficiency and excellent reversibility has a great potential in the industrial capture of CO2 from flue gas.

Abstract:A new kind of high efficiency and low cost CO2 complex absorbent was studied. Through innovative research, imidazolium-based ionic liquid was mixed with an aqueous solution of a non-ionic surfactant. The absorption ability of each complex absorbent with different concentrations was tested under a condition of 20°C, from 0.1 to 0.6MPa. The absorption capacity of CO2 in absorbents increases with increasing pressure and concentrations of ionic liquids. Different aqueous ionic liquid–surfactant solutions had different CO2 absorption, and the sequence was as follows: X-100>TWEEN 80>PEG 400. [emim] [OTf] was more likely to absorb CO2 than the other four ionic liquids. All of the complex absorbents had good absorption properties. The best combination was made up of 5% TWEEN 80, 10% [emim] [OTf] and water, which could capture 0.798molL−1 CO2 at 0.6MPa while pure water could only capture 0.439molL−1 under the same conditions. Through computer numerical simulations, the experimental data could be well fitted with Henry’s law and Langmuir isothermal adsorption equation. After multiple absorption and regeneration, the absorption capacity of the complex absorbent was reduced by less than 5%. It could be expected to be a new type of CO2 capture absorbent.

Abstract:We observe the stabilization of a single-(double-) charge optical vortex propagating in a self-focusing medium. The optical vortex, which carries a phase singularity at its center, usually breaks up in a self-focusing medium due to the so-called azimuthal instability. However, by adding a small rotating azimuthally-periodic intensity modulation on the vortex light beam, which propagates in a noninstantaneous self-focusing medium, we successfully suppress the azimuthal instability. This observation is confirmed by both numerical simulation and perturbational analysis.

Abstract:A strategy of tuning azole‐based ionic liquids for reversible CO2 capture from ambient air was reported. Through tuning the basicity of anion as well as the type of cation, an ideal azole‐based ionic liquid with both high CO2 capacity and excellent stability was synthesized, which exhibited a highest single‐component isotherm uptake of 2.17 mmol/g at the atmospheric CO2 concentration of 0.4 mbar at 30 oC, even in the presence of water. The bound CO2 can be released by relatively mild heating of the IL‐CO2 at 80 oC, which mike it promising for energy‐efficient CO2 desorption and sorbent regeneration, leading to excellent reversibility. To the best of our knowledge, these azole‐based ionic liquids are superior to other adsorbent materials for direct air capture due to their dual‐tunable properties and high CO2 capture efficiency, offering a new prospect for efficient and reversible direct air capture technologies.

Abstract:The integration of chemical absorption of CO 2 and in situ transformation to highly valuable chemicals is a promising process as an alternative toward fossil fuels. Here, three imidazolium ionic liquids (ILs), 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium acetate, 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium 1,2,4-triazole ([Bmim][Tz]), and 1-butyl-2,3-dimethylimidazolium 1,2,4-triazole were synthesized to absorb and activate CO 2 by the formation of CO 2 -adducts, which can be in situ converted into dialkyl carbonates with alcohols (ROH, R = CH 3 , C 2 H 5 , and C 4 H 9 ) in solvent diiodomethane under ambient temperature and pressure. The results show [Bmim][Tz] exhibits the best CO 2 absorption capacity and dimethyl carbonates (DMC) yield, where CO 2 capacity is up to 0.216 g CO2 /g IL and DMC yield (based on methanol) is as high as 20.2 %. The structures of imidazolium ILs have significant effects on the absorption of CO 2 and subsequent transformation process. Fourier transform infrared and carbon nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopies demonstrate ILs structures influence binding sites for CO 2 absorption, which can combine with CO 2 to form CO 2 -adducts, zwitterion [Bmim-CO 2 ], and [Tz-CO 2 ] − . Furthermore, density functional theory calculations verify the structure effects (binding sites and steric hindrance) of ILs on the activation of CO 2 and methanol, through the elongated CO bond lengths of CO 2 -adducts and O-H bond lengths of methanol in IL-methanol complexes, respectively, leading to different DMC yields. The integrated process is promising for the energy-efficient capture and utilization of CO 2 under ambient conditions.

Abstract:Ionic liquids (ILs) have been widely investigated as the promising green absorbents for CO2 capture. In this work, four low-viscous diamino protic ionic liquids (PILs), including N,N-dimethy1-1,3-propane diamine 2-fluorophenolate ([DMAPAH][2F-PhO]), N,N-dimethy1-1,3-propane diamine 3-fluorophenolate ([DMAPAH][3F-PhO]), N,N-dimethyl-1,3-propane diamine 3-fluorophenolate ([DMAPAH][4F-PhO]), and NN-dimethy1-1,3-propane diamine 3,5-difluorophenolate ([DMAPAH][3,5F-PhO]), were prepared and evaluated for CO2 capture. The solubilities of CO2 in these PILs were measured using an isochoric saturation technique at temperatures from 303.2 to 333.2 K and pressure up to 1.5 bar. It was found that the PILs are excellent absorbent for CO2 capture with the best absorptive capacity of 3.99 mol CO2/kg IL (0.86 mol CO2/mol IL), which is superior or competitive to most reported ILs. Furthermore, the captured CO2 was easy to release by heating and decompression, leading regeneration of the PILs. In addition, a plausible mechanism of CO2 absorption in these PILs was proposed via a combination of chemical and physical absorption by NMR, FTIR, and mass spectrum (MS). (C) 2018 Elsevier B.V. Abstract:In this study, a variety of functionalized ILs with dual sites including amino acid group (AA) and basic anion (R) were synthesized to investigate the suppression and cooperation between the sites in CO2 absorption. The basic anions selected in this study with different basicity include sulfonate (Su), carboxylate (Ac), imidazolium (Im), and indolium (Ind). These ILs ([P66614]2[AA-R]) were applied to CO2 absorption. The results present that CO2 capacity increases first and then decreases later with the continuous increase in the activity of the anion site. Combined with CO2 absorption experiments, IR and NMR spectroscopic analyses and DFT calculation demonstrate that the ability of one site to capture CO2 would be suppressed when the activity of another site is much stronger. Thus, the cooperation of dual site-functionalized ILs and high CO2 capacity might be achieved through balancing the two sites to be equivalent. Based on this point, [P66614]2[5Am-iPA] was further synthesized by taking the advantage of the conjugated benzene ring. As expected, [P66614]2[5Am-iPA] showed capacity as high as 2.38 mol CO2 per mol IL at 30 °C and 1 bar without capacity decrease even after 10 times recycling performance of CO2 absorption and desorption.

Abstract:A strategy to improve CO2 capture significantly through the non-covalent interaction strengthened by the anion was reported, which exhibits an extremely high capacity up to 1.24 mole CO2 per mole ionic liquid and excellent reversibility due to the presence of the enhanced Lewis acid-base and cooperative C-HO hydrogen bonding interactions.
