Abstract:With steady growth on CO2 emission over the years, removal of CO2 from the environment is a critical issue in preventing global warming and climate change. Due to negligible volatility and remarkable thermal stability, ionic liquids have become potential media for CO2 capture. However, their drawbacks such as high price, toxicity and inefficient energy consumption have severely limited their applications in CO2 capture. Here, a promising deep eutectic solvent was synthesized by a one-pot method, simply mixing NH4Cl with monoethanolamine (MEA) at 30 degrees C for 30 min to form [MEAHCI][MEA] confirmed by H-1 NMR. [MEAHCI][MEA] with EG exhibits a rapid initial kinetics of CO2 absorption, around 22.5 wt% within 10 min. It also has good thermal-stability, high tolerance to water contents, economically feasibility of regeneration and robust performance in recycle. This novel capture system which can be prepared on-site is feasible for industrialization and offers an efficient, inexpensive and safe system for CO2 capture. (C) 2019 Elsevier B.V. A Water-Lean Triazole Ionic Liquid Biphasic Solvent for Energy-Efficient CO2 Capture Through Reversible Polarity and Intermolecular Hydrogen Bonding

Abstract:The development of novel functionalized solvents with low volatility, high mass capacity, and low energy consumption for CO2 capture technology is still a significant challenge. In this study, two triazole-functionalized ionic liquids (TFILs) were designed and combined with imidazole organic solvents as phase separation agents to form novel biphasic solvents for CO2 capture. When the mass ratio of [N-2222][1,2,4-Triz]/1-methylimidazole (N-MI) was 5:4, the CO2 capacity reached 0.112 g of CO2/g of solvent at 40 degrees C and 1 bar, in which the CO2-rich phase accounts for 95% of the total CO2 capacity and 60% of the total volume. Meanwhile, the energy consumption for CO2 desorption of [N-2222][1,2,4-Triz]/N-MI (5:4) was 1.29 GJ/ton CO2, which is 65.78% lower than that of 30 wt % MEA aqueous solution. The results indicated that [N-2222][1,2,4-Triz] can react with CO2 to produce carbamate that existed in the CO2-rich phase. Therefore, the original homogeneous liquid was transformed into liquid-solid phase during CO2 absorption due to the great difference in polarity between imidazole organic solvents and carbamate products, as well as strong intermolecular hydrogen bonding between carbamate products. This study provides useful guidance for designing novel phase-change solvents with high CO2 absorption performance and low energy consumption.

Abstract:The main disadvantage of commercial absorption solution for CO2 capture from flue gas is extensive energy consumption. A novel amino-functionalized ionic liquid (AFIL) organic solution of tetraethylene pentamine 2-methylimidazolium/N-propanol/ethylene glycol ([TEPAH][2-MI]/NPA/EG) is considered as a promising candidate absorption system because of its efficient CO2 capture performance and low energy consumption. The thermodynamics and kinetics studies are very essential for evaluating the absorbent and its potential of future practical industrial application. In this work, the performance in these two aspects of [TEPAH][2-MI]/NPA/EG solution were investigated. The regeneration energy consumption was 2.98 GJ·t−1 CO2, which was 21.6% lower than that of benchmark monoethanolamine (MEA) aqueous solution, and the energy saving advantage was embodied in sensible heat and latent heat. Kinetic analysis showed that chemical reaction of CO2 absorption into [TEPAH][2-MI]/NPA/EG solution took place in the pseudo-first-order reaction. The reaction rate constant and enhancement factor increased with the increase of absorption temperature, while those showed a decreasing trend with the increase of absorption loading. The relation between the second-order rate constant and temperature was expressed as k 2 = 5.6192 × 10 8 exp - 3111.6 T , and the activation energy was further calculated as 25.87 kJ·mol−1. Compared with those of MEA and several traditional ionic liquid solutions, these parameters indicated a stronger reaction ability of the novel system. Moreover, the mass transfer resistance of gas and liquid phase changed constantly during the absorption process, and the dominant role of mass transfer resistance gradually changed from the gas phase to liquid phase. The thermodynamics and kinetics of CO2 capture revealed that the [TEPAH][2-MI]/NPA/EG solution had an excellent application potential in the future.

Abstract:A novel sustainable amino functionalized ionic liquid (AFIL) organic solution of tetraethylene pentamine 5-amino-4-imidazolecarboxamide/n-propanol/ethylene glycol ([TEPAH][AICA]/NPA/EG) was proposed for CO2 capture to reduce the regeneration energy consumption. The solution had an efficient absorption loading of 1.78 mol.mol(-1), and it still maintained a good recyclability after 10 cycles (regeneration efficiency > 88%). Under this condition, the regeneration energy consumption was 2.30 GJ.t(-1) CO2, which was 39.5% lower than that of MEA/water. The absorption and desorption mechanisms were investigated by C-13 NMR. For CO2 absorption reaction, N atom of [AICA](-) combined with CO2 to form the carbamate directly, while other amino groups followed the zwitterion formation and deprotonation. Then some carbamates combined with alcohol to form the alkyl carbonates. For CO2 desorption reaction, both the alkyl carbonates and carbamates combined with AFILH(+) to decompose, but the alkyl carbonates decomposed completely and a small amount of carbamates remained, indicating that carbonate was easier to decompose than carbamate. The novel [TEPAH] [AICA]/NPA/EG solution with low energy consumption and good recyclability, which provides a sustainable strategy for advancing carbon capture technologies.

Abstract:Extensive energy consumption is a challenge for developing industrial carbon capture absorbents. However, its industry application potential still needs to be further evaluated for carbon capture process. In this work, thermodynamics, kinetics and corrosive behavior of [TEPAH][AICA]/NPA/EG solution were investigated. The regeneration energy consumption was 2.30 GJ & sdot;t- 1 CO2, which was 39.5% lower than the benchmark monoethanolamine (MEA) solution. The mass transfer reaction kinetic model was established, showing that the reaction between CO2 and [TEPAH][AICA]/NPA/EG solution followed fast pseudo-first-order. The enhancement factor and reaction rate constant increased with the increase of absorption temperature, while they showed a decreasing trend with the increase of absorption loading. The relationship between the second-order rate constant and temperature was expressed as k2 = 7.2075 x 108exp( - 3093.5). The activation energy was 25.72 kJ & sdot;mol- 1. During absorption process, the dominant mass transfer resistance gradually changed from gas phase to liquid phase. In addition, the absorbent presented noncorrosive behavior after saturated absorption, which was superior than the MEA absorbent for storage and transportation in the carbon capture technology. To be concluded, the above results showed that the [TEPAH] [AICA]/NPA/EG solution owned great potential for future industrial application.

Abstract:Amino-functionalized ionic liquid biphasic solvents present excellent absorption capacity, regeneration ability, and energy consumption savings, which make them a possible candidate for CO2 capture. The kinetics and regeneration heat duty of the [TETAH][Lys]-ethanol-water system capturing CO2 were investigated in this work. The mass transfer and kinetic parameters, including the overall reaction rate constant (kov), the reaction rate constant (k2), and the enhancement factor (E), were assessed at diverse concentrations and temperatures. At 303.15 K, the k2 of CO2 capture into the [TETAH][Lys]-ethanol-water solution was 58,907.30 m3 kmol−1 s−1. The Arrhenius equation was introduced to evaluate the relations between k2 and the reaction temperature, which can be presented as ( {k}_{2,left[mathrm{TETAH} ight]left[mathrm{Lys} ight]hbox{-} mathrm{ethanol}hbox{-} mathrm{water}}=1.9941 imes {10}^{15}exp left(-frac{7388.1}{T} ight) ) The regeneration heat duty of the novel biphasic solvent was 35.5 and 62.39% lower than those of [TETAH][Lys]-water and the benchmark monoethanolamine solution, respectively. An efficient absorption performance and lower energy requirement indicate the great potential for this application.

Abstract:A novel, sustainable, dual-functionalized amino ionic liquid biphasic solvent of 3-(Dimethylamino)-1-propylamine-1,2,4-triazole/poly (ethylene glycol) dimethyl ether/water ([DMAPA][TZ]/NHD/water) was proposed for CO 2 capture to reduce the consumption of regeneration energy. Experimental results showed that the CO 2 absorption loading of the solvent was 1.95 mol CO 2 ·L −1 solvent at a CO 2 partial pressure of 15 kPa. The volume of the CO 2 -rich phase was 40 vol% of the total volume, with a loading of up to 4.65 mol CO 2 ·L −1 solvent, accounting for approximately 95.4% of the blended CO 2 loading in the solvent. The CO 2 -rich phase could be regenerated by 92.3% in 10 min at 373 K, without the presence of a lean phase. The regeneration efficiency of the solvent was maintained at 83% after 10 adsorption and desorption cycles. The reaction, regeneration, and phase-change mechanism were investigated using 13 C NMR and phase composition analysis. CO 2 reacted with [DMAPA][TZ] to form two kinds of carbamate during solubilization, and all carbamates could be further hydrolyzed to form HCO 3 − and CO 3 2− . The solvent effect, phase-change behavior, and CO 2 physical dissolution of NHD could promote the absorption and desorption rate and absorption capacity of CO 2 . The energy consumption for CO 2 desorption could be reduced to 1.335 GJ·t −1 CO 2 , which was 67% lower than that of 30 wt% ethanolamine (3.99 GJ·t −1 CO 2 ), given the lower heat of reaction, specific heat capacity, and solvent loss. Thus, this solvent presents a sustainable strategy for advancing carbon capture technologies.

Abstract:In order to achieve efficient CO 2 capture, a novel biphasic solvent based on diethylenetriamine serine ionic liquid/polyethylene glycol dimethyl ether/water ([DETA][SER]/NHD/H 2 O) was developed. This study achieved low viscosity by weakening the hydrogen bonding and van der Waals interactions within the pure ionic liquid (IL) by adding NHD and H 2 O to [DETA][SER]. Additionally, due to the low polarity and fewer hydrogen bonds formed by NHD, it is separated. The formation of a tight hydrogen bond network in the rich-phase after the reaction enables the enrichment of the product. Based on this, the optimal mass ratio of [DETA][SER]/NHD/H 2 O is determined to be 20 wt%/40 wt%/40 wt%. The viscosity of this solvent is 7.82 mPa·s, with a total absorption load of 1.26 mol·mol −1 IL, where the rich-phase load accounts for 99 % of the total load and occupies only 37 % of the volume. The mechanism of CO 2 capture was investigated using 13 C NMR, revealing the formation of zwitterions from the reaction of the primary amines on [DETA] + and [SER] − with CO 2 . Subsequently, proton transfer and hydrolysis of the carbamate esters were observed. Notably, NHD was found to promote phase separation without participating in chemical reactions. These findings demonstrate the potential of this biphasic solvent system as a high-capacity solution for CO 2 capture.

Abstract:A decrease in CO2 emissions is urgently required in the present situation due to the fast growth of carbon dioxide (CO2) in the atmosphere, which has caused a series of global climate issues. This study used an impregnation-evaporation method to immobilize an amino functionalized ionic liquid [C2OHmim][Lys] on a chromatographic column filler GDX-103 and create a novel supported ionic liquid. The results showed that the supported ionic liquid with 60 wt % ionic liquid content had the best adsorption performance at 40 °C, and the CO2 adsorption isotherm showed that the adsorption capacity at 0.1 MPa was 1.29 mmol CO2/g sorbent, which was 6 times greater than the adsorption capacity of the pure carrier. The sample with 60% ionic liquid content has an adsorption capacity of 1.02 mmol CO2/g sorbent under the condition of CO2/N2 mixed gas with 10% CO2 content. This is 43 times greater than the adsorption capacity of the pure carrier, and its adsorption performance is stable after three adsorption and desorption cycles. Through the rich porous structure of GDX-103, the ionic liquid is effectively supported and dispersed, which expands the contact area between CO2 and ionic liquid and enhances the mass transfer of CO2. At the same time, CO2 can be chemically bound to the groups on the anion of ionic liquid and be immobilized, so it has a high selective adsorption capacity of CO2, which makes it a great alternative to traditional CO2 adsorbents.
A Novel Hydrophilic Amino Acid Ionic Liquid [c(2)ohmim][gly] As Aqueous Sorbent for Co2 Capture

Abstract:A hydrophilic amino acid ionic liquid [C2OHmim][Gly] synthesized by our laboratory was utilized to enhance the process of MEA for CO2 capture from low-pressure flue gas. The optimum proportion of the mixed solution was chosen as 0.7molL−1 MEA and 0.3molL−1 [C2OHmim][Gly]. The absorption capacity of the new absorbent was 0.534molCO2/mol absorbent under 3% O2, and was higher than that of MEA (0.430molCO2/mol amine). The capacity of MEA/[C2OHmim][Gly] solution was maintained at 0.50molCO2/mol absorbent even with 8% of O2. Only 12.6% of decrease in the absorption capacity was noticed compared with that in the absence of O2. Furthermore, it was well recycled with a regeneration efficiency of 90.2% by thermal regeneration after fourth-cycle experiments in 3% O2. The new absorbent is proved to have a reduced degradation and evaporation rate, an enhanced absorption capacity and a high stability and regeneration efficiency for the CO2 capture.

[TEPAH][Pro]/NPA/H 2 O owned the maximum absorption loading of 2.01 mol CO 2 ·mol absorbent −1 , and the rich phase viscosity was only 8.06 mPa·s. Moreover, its desorption efficiency was 84.4% while the 5th cyclic loading kept above 1.61 mol CO 2 ·mol absorbent −1 . With the presence of NPA, the rich phase only accounted for 41% of the total volume while it contained 99.3% of CO 2 products. The heat duty was only 2.39 GJ·t CO 2 -1 , which was 37% lower than that of 30 wt% ethanolamine (MEA) aqueous solution. Meanwhile, the reaction mechanism and product distribution were revealed by 13 C NMR and the mass transfer kinetics was investigated using the wetted wall column. The products in the rich phase mainly consisted of carbamate, hydrogen carbonate, propyl carbonate and water while the main component of the lean phase was NPA. The reaction followed a fast pseudo-first order reaction. At 313.15 K, the rate constant of fresh absorbent was 51346 s −1 , which showed a decreasing trend with the increase of absorption loading at 313.15 K. The second order reaction rate was calculated by: k 2 = 9.88 × 10 9 exp(-3591.2/T), where the reaction activation energy was only 29.86 kJ·mol −1 .

Abstract:Biphasic solvents have been attracting increasing attention in CO2 capture recently due to its energy-saving potential. However, most current biphasic solvents still face the problem of limited desorption performance. To solve the problem, a novel biphasic solvent of 1-(2-aminoethyl)piperazine (AEP)/1-propanol/H2O solution was proposed. The absorption capacity was 1.26 mol CO2.mol(-1) amine, which was 2.3 times that of MEA. The regeneration efficiency was 74% and the cyclic capacity after 5 absorption-desorption experiments was 0.90 mol CO2.mol(-1) amine, which was 2.7 times that of MEA. The absorption-desorption performance of AEP/1-propanol/H2O solution was much better compared with most current biphasic solvents. Meanwhile, AEP/1-propanol/H2O solution had a low regeneration heat of 2.74 GJ.t(-1)-CO2, which was 27.9% lower than that of MEA. Moreover, 13C NMR analysis was used to investigate the absorption-desorption mechanism and species distribution. The multiple amino groups in AEP could react with CO2 to produce carbamate and carbonate. The generated absorption products were mainly concentrated in the CO2-rich phase, while the CO2-lean phase contained much 1propanol. Most of the absorption products were decomposed during regeneration, so the high desorption performance was achieved. Overall, AEP/1-propanol/H2O solution is a promising energy-saving candidate for industrial CO2 capture due to its competitive absorption-desorption performance and low regeneration energy.
Performance and mechanism of the functional ionic liquid absorbent with the self-extraction property for CO 2 capture

Abstract:Regarding the bottleneck of high regeneration consumption for the amine absorbents, it was innovatively proposed in this work to construct a novel functional ionic liquid absorbent (3-Dibutylamino-propylamine-imidazole, [DBAPAH][Im]) with the self-extraction property for CO 2 capture. The solvent changed from liquid-liquid two-phase to homogeneous as absorption loading increased, and it returned to a two-phase after desorption. The absorption loading of [DBAPAH][Im]-H 2 O solution for CO 2 capture was 1.49 mol mol −1 , and its regeneration efficiency was found to be 92.09% for the first regeneration and remained at 81.34% even after six cycles with a low regeneration temperature of 98 °C. It was found that this ionic liquid featured a reversible polarity, for which the polarity of [DBAPAH][Im] was much lower than that of water before absorption. The solvent changed from liquid-liquid phase to homogeneous as absorption loading increased because the polarity of the carbamate product and the Van der Waals interaction between carbamate and water were all increased. After desorption, the ionic liquid resumed with the low polarity and was not miscible in water to form an organic extraction phase, which promoted the rapid separation of the ionic liquid from the main solution and finally achieved the purpose of low temperature regeneration. Due to the coordination between cations and ions, the desorption free energy of the products formed by [DBAPAH][Im] and CO 2 was very low (7.56 kJ mol −1 ). Furthermore, the energy consumption was estimated as 1.83 GJ t −1 CO 2 , which was much lower than that of benchmark monoethanolamine (MEA; 3.8 GJ t −1 CO 2 ), and finally achieve the purpose of low regeneration temperature and low energy consumption regeneration.

The reaction followed a fast pseudo-first order reaction. At 313.15 K, the rate constant of fresh absorbent was 51346 s-1, which showed a decreasing trend with the increase of absorption loading at 313.15 K. The second order reaction rate was calculated by: k2 = 9.88 x 109exp(-3591.2/T), where the reaction activation energy was only 29.86 kJ.mol- 1.
Nonaqueous amino-phenolic dual-functionalized ionic liquid absorbents for reversible CO 2 capture: Phase change behaviors and mechanism

Abstract:In order to improve the recycling capacity, regenerability and energy efficiency of ionic liquid (IL) based CO 2 capture technology, a series of nonaqueous phase change solvents comprising amino-phenolic dual-functionalized ILs and polyethylene glycols (PEGs) were proposed for CO 2 capture in this research. The capture performance results demonstrated that the 20 wt% diethylenetriamine-2-bromophenolate(D2Br)-PEG200 and diethylenetriamine-4-bromophenolate(D4Br)-PEG200 solutions with slight phase change could realize high CO 2 loading of 1.923 and 1.859 mol/mol IL and CO 2 -rich phase constituted volume fractions lower than 70%. The absorption ability kept stable at relatively high temperature and the two systems could be rapidly regenerated at 363 K with cyclic regeneration rate above 85% after ten consecutive cycles. The weak thermal stability of the absorption products was proved by TG-DSC analysis, contributing to improved regeneration performance. ATR-IR and 13 C NMR analysis confirmed that the amino groups of IL reacted with CO 2 to form carbamates, and phenol groups through 1:1 mechanism to form alkyl carbonates, guaranteeing enhanced recycling capacity and regenerability. Spectroscopic analysis and theoretical calculation results revealed the different phase change behaviors presented in PEGs solutions were mainly derived from the product-solvent interaction, which was more influenced by hydroxyl content. The interactions between the product ion pairs could be the main cause of the unstable state of the solutions and phase separation. The different patterns of hydrogen bonding established between IL and PEG molecules could maintain a relatively strong product-solvent interaction in the reacted solution, which would partially overcome the interactions between protonated amine and carbamate, thus delaying the phase transition formation and forming a slight solid–liquid phase change, potentially beneficial for CO 2 capture. The two systems experienced a low reaction heat of 1.315 and 0.782 GJ/t CO 2 , which could significantly reduce regeneration heat load. Therefore, the amino-phenolic dual-functionalized IL solutions are proposed to be a competitive and reversible CO 2 trapping agent.

Abstract:Capturing and storing carbon dioxide (CO2) is now of concern. This work presents a task-specific ionic liquid (TSIL), triethylbutylammonium acetate ([N-2224][CH3COO]), for the purpose of trapping CO2 instead of the commonly used organic amine solutions. Since [N-2224][CH3COO] has a hydrophilic nature, the CO2 dissolution behavior into [N-2224][CH3COO]-nH(2)O complexes has been investigated in detail, including the absorption rate, absorption capacity, and the ability of repeating absorption. The solubilities of CO2 into[N-2224][CH3COO]-1H(2)O at 0 degrees C, 25 degrees C, 40 degrees C, and 60 degrees C from (0.007 up to 30) bar are presented. The results show strong evidence that [N-2224][CH3COO]-1H(2)O is an excellent reversible absorbent for CO2, and the recovered [N-2224][CH3COO]-1H(2)O maintains the same absorption capacity and absorption rate. The CO2 absorption into [N-2224][CH3COO]-nH(2)O mixtures at 25 degrees C and pressures up to 30 bar is also studied. It is elucidated that the absorption capacity decreases with the content of water and the rise of operational temperature. The equilibrium constant, Henry's law constant, overall rate constant, and activation energy are also calculated from the experimental data. All evidence indicates that [N-2224] [CH3COO]-nH(2)O with low viscosity may have potential to be used as good absorbents for CO2 capture.
A Novel Phase-Changing Nonaqueous Solution for CO2 Capture with High Capacity, Thermostability, and Regeneration Efficiency

Abstract:A novel nonaqueous solution, triethylenetetramine (TETA) blended with polyethylene glycol (PEG200), was developed for CO2 absorption, with which a phase-changing phenomenon was observed after the absorption. A reaction mechanism for TETA PEG200 solution and CO2 was proposed based on C-13 NMR analysis. It was found that PEG200 not only acts as a solvent that contributes to biphasic separation but also gets involved in the reactions, leading to an increased CO2 absorption capacity. Results show that 1 M TETA PEG200 solution exhibits a high CO2 capacity of 1.63 mol/mol TETA, which is comparable to a TETA-water solution. The capacity is only slightly affected when the temperature rises up to 60 degrees C. Moreover, the solution demonstrates good thermostability similar to typical functionalized ionic liquids (ILs) while presenting much lower viscosity than the ILs. For regeneration processes, microwave heating was identified to be a more effective method than classic heating. The solution shows a regeneration efficiency as high as 96% after four absorption-desorption cycles.

However, the high viscosity of CO2-rich phase after phase split could lead to issues such as high flow resistance, low heat transfer efficiency, and phase separation instability in application. To address these limitations, a strategy of using alkanolamine as a viscosity regulator for biphasic solvents was proposed. Diethanolamine(DEA), an alkanolamine regulator, was introduced to a system of polyamine/amide absorbent, and then a novel biphasic solvent of diethylenetriamine (DETA)/diethanolamine (DEA)/N, N-Dimethylacetamide(DMAC)/water(H2O) was developed. The viscosity of the CO2-rich phase solvent was reduced to 19.02 mPa & sdot;s, a significant decrease compared to the solution without DEA regulation. The novel solvent exhibited a high cyclic capacity of 2.08 mol/kg, which was 43.4 % higher than that of the solution without DEA, and a desorption rate twice as high as 30 wt% monoethanolamine(MEA). Quantitative 13C Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) and Molecular Dynamics (MD) simulations revealed the phase split and viscosity regulation mechanisms. It was proved that DETA species, especially carbamates, tend to self-aggregate with each other due to intermolecular hydrogen bonding with the CO2 loading increases, which leads to phase split and high viscosity of the saturated solution. Through DEA regulation, the protonation of carbamates and the generation of HCO3-/CO32- were promoted, which weakened the self-aggregation of carbamates species, decreasing the viscosity and the regeneration energy of saturated CO2-rich phase solution. The regeneration energy reached 2.19 GJ/ton CO2, which exhibited a 42.4 % reduction compared with that of 30 wt% MEA.

Abstract:Deficiencies such as high viscosity, volatility, and rich phase precipitation limited the engineering application of non-aqueous absorbents. A series of high boiling point solvent screening experiments were conducted to develop an absorption saturated solution with a homogeneous phase at low viscosity (14.71 mPa s) in this study. Further addition of polyamines increased the absorption capacity by 42% (3.55 mol CO 2 per kg). The 13 C NMR results indicated that in the DETA/MEA/NMF blended amine system, MEA was involved in the deprotonation process of DETA zwitterions as proton acceptors. Quantum chemical calculations were utilized to compare the energies of each possible single-step reaction, providing insights into the reaction pathways of the blended amine system. The rate constant of the MEA/CO 2 reaction was found to be 1.98 times that of the DETA/CO 2 reaction, indicating lower reaction activity, consistent with NMR results. In addition, the results of the analysis of weak interactions revealed that the hydrogen bonds were key factors affecting the viscosity change and precipitation in non-aqueous absorbents, providing a new method for designing novel low-viscosity non-aqueous absorbents. The combination of theoretical analysis and experimental results underscores the potential of the blended amine non-aqueous absorbent as a feasible alternative for the industrial applications of CO 2 capture.
