Abstract:The extensive production and large-scale use of perfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) have raised their presence in aquatic environments worldwide. Thus, the facile and reliable screening of PFASs in aqueous systems is of great significance. Herein, we designed a novel fluorescent sensor array for the rapid screening and discrimination of multiple PFASs in water. The sensor array comprised three highly stable zirconium porphyrinic luminescent metal-organic frameworks (i.e., PCNs) with different topological structures. The sensing mechanism was based on the static fluorescence quenching of PCNs by PFASs upon their adsorptive interactions. The fluorescence response patterns were characteristic for each PFAS because of their different adsorption affinities toward different PCNs. Through the interpretation of response patterns by statistical methods, the proposed PCN array successfully discriminated six different kinds of PFASs, each PFAS at different concentrations and PFAS mixtures at different molar ratios. The practicability of this array was further verified by effectively discriminating PFASs in two real water samples. Remarkably, the PCN sensors exhibited a very short response time toward PFASs (within 10 s) due to the ordered pore structure allowing fast PFAS diffusion. This study not only provides a facile method for rapid PFAS screening in waters but also broadens the application of luminescent metal-organic frameworks and array techniques in sensing fields.

Abstract:The high toxicity and low biodegradability of the phenolic pollutants destroyed the balance of the environment and influenced human health seriously. Here, we developed a three-dimensional coloremetric sensor array for discriminating and determinating phenolic pollutants basing on the distinct Cu/nucleotides MOFs. Firstly, three laccase-mimic Cu/MOFs (Cu/AMP, Cu/CMP, and Cu/GMP) were obtained by regulating the molar ratio of Cu 2+ and nucleotides. Then the Cu/MOFs as the recognition elements of the sensor array catalyzed the pollutants-4-AAP-H 2 O 2 system, obtaining the colored benzoquinone products. Subsequently, the data array obtaining from the combined training matrix (3 Cu/MOFs × 6 pollutants × 5 replicates) was projected into a new dimensional space to obtain the 3D canonical scores, and classified into individual clusters by introducing LDA method. No overlap in their respective LDA plots for the six phenolic pollutants with different concentrations suggested the prominent discriminating performance of the sensor array. Furthermore, the sensor array exhibited high selectivity compared to the "lock-and-key" sensors even other active matrices coexisting in water samples. Importantly, the most influential discrimination factor was used to monitor the levels of the six targets, evidencing the potential application in assessing water pollution and maintaining human health.

Abstract:The design of artificial receptors with a specific recognition function and enhanced selectivity is highly desirable in the electrochemical sensing field, which can be used for detection of environmental pollutants. In this facet, metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) featured adjustable porosities and specific host-guest recognition properties. Especially, the large hydrophobic cavity formed in the porous MOFs may become a potential artificial receptor. We herein designed a new porous MOF [Zn2(L)(IPA)(H2O)]·2DMF·2MeOH·3H2O (Zn-L-IPA) by using a functionalized sulfonylcalix[4]arene (L1) and isophthalic acid (H2IPA) (DMF = N,N′-dimethylformamide). The specific pore size and pore shape of Zn-L-IPA made it efficiently selective for absorption of bisphenol A (BPA), bisphenol F (BPF), and bisphenol S (BPS). Therefore, a rapid, highly selective, and ultrasensitive electrochemical sensing platform /GCE was fabricated by using Zn-L-IPA as a host to recognize and absorb bisphenol guests (GP = graphite powder, GCE = glassy carbon electrode). Most strikingly, the extremely low detection limits were up to 3.46 and 0.17 nM for BPA and BPF, respectively, using the /GCE electrode. Furthermore, the "recognition and adsorption" mechanism was uncovered by density functional theory with the B3LYP function. Abstract:Recently, bisphenol AF (BPAF) as most commonly used bisphenol A analogs had the increasing higher level in the environment with unknown risks. Herein, a synchronous dual-mode sensor had been established based on differential pulse voltammetry (DPV) and electrochemiluminescence (ECL) for the detection of BPAF in pond mud. Firstly, the sensing molecularly imprinted polymer (MIP) films were prepared by electrochemical polymerization procedure with 3,4-ethoxylene dioxy thiophene (EDOT) as the functional monomer, BPAF as the template molecule and MXene as the supporting electrolyte. Due to unique characters of PEDOT and MXene, the constructed MIP films were stable and highly conductive. Meanwhile, zinc-doped bismuth sulfide quantum dots (Zn-Bi2S3 QDs) were synthesized as a nano-emitter to generate strong ECL signals in the MIP film. In the sensing process, a pulsed voltage applied to the PEDOT/MXene MIP film to generate both DPV and ECL signals for simultaneous dual-mode detection. Additionally, the liquid-liquid extraction with deep eutectic solvent (menthol: octanol 1:1) was used for the pre-concentration of the BPAF in the pond mud. Based on the sensing system, the ECL and DPV response showed the good linear relationships with the concentration of BPAF with the ranges of 0.01 μM-50 μM and 0.1 μM-50 μM and the detection limits of 0.0060 μM and 0.059 μM, respectively.

Abstract:Bisphenols, a typical pollutant with endocrine acting the scientific attention for their ascertained toxicity and wide uses. The magnetic Zr-MOFs (Fe3O4@PDA@UiO-66-NH2), functionalized with amino groups and proved by a series of material characterization techniques, were successfully prepared as adsorbents for magnetic solidphase extraction (MSPE) of five bisphenols (including bisphenol A, bisphenol B, bisphenol S, bisphenol AP and bisphenol AF) from water samples. Liquid chromatography coupled with tandem mass spectrometry was used for sample analysis and quantification. Good linearity was obtained for each analyte with correlation coefficients larger than 0.990. The low limits of detection (LOD) and qualification (LOQ) were 0.013-0.290 mu g/L (S/N = 3) and 0.088-1.800 mu g/L (S/N = 10), respectively. The repeatability standard deviations in spiked lake water samples were 0.57-1.67%. In addition, the amount of the materials (40 mg), the adsorption time (30 min), pH value (7), elution time (30 min) and elution solvent (methanol) were determined as the optimal parameters in bisphenol extraction. Satisfactory results were obtained when the developed MSPE method was applied to determine the five bisphenols in real lake water samples, and the maximum extraction efficiency was up to 78.2%. The developed MSPE method using the Fe3O4@PDA@UiO-66-NH2 as adsorbent provides time saving, high selectivity and sensitivity for the analysis of trace bisphenols, suggesting that the Fe3O4@PDA@UiO-66-NH2 had a broad application prospect in water analysis.

Abstract:A rapid, simple, and precise simultaneous determination method of 4 kinds of bisphenols (BPs) in environmental water was developed based on the high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) technology. Water samples were firstly extracted by the prepared magnetic polydopamine sulfonic acid group-zirconium metal-organic frameworks (Fe3O4 @PDA@Zr-SO3H-MOF) nanocomposites using the magnetic solid-phase exaction (MSPE) technique. Adsorption tests showed that the prepared material possess superior hydrophilicity and ultrahigh surface area, as well as the strong magnetic responsiveness. When used as the MSPE sorbent for four bisphenols, Fe3O4@PDA@Zr-SO3H-MOF displayed good performance on extraction efficiencies, enrichment factors, and reusability. A linear relationship with a correlation coefficient greater than 0.998 and a relative standard deviations of 3.8-5.1% was achieved for the BPs concentration within the range of 0.05-200 μg /L. The detection limits and the quantification limits were between 0.0048-0.0073 μg/L and 0.016-0.024 μg/L, respectively. Overall, this method was successfully applied to determine BPs in practical water sample with the recovery between 93.1%-105.8%.

Abstract:Automobile exhaust gases, plastic pollutants, smoking, and other harmful substances have been caused serious harm to human beings and the environment. Styrene as a common air poison enters the human body through breathing or skin, and is discharged in the form of phenylglyoxylic acid (PGA). Therefore, detection of specific, sensitive and trace PGA is particularly important. Here, Two Zinc-based metal-organic frameworks {[Zn2L1·(DMF)2·H2O]·(DMF)2·H2O}n, {[Zn4(L2)2(DMF)2·(H2O)3]·(DMF)8}n (L1=2,5-bis((3-carboxylphenyl)amino) terephthalic acid, L2=2,5-bis((4-carboxyphenyl)amino)terephthalic acid) have been reported as 1, 2. Both 1 and 2 present 3D structures, which all can be simplified as 4,4,4-c net in the topology. It is worth mentioning that 2 have two kinds of different Zn SBU units as connecting nodes in the structure. Besides, compared with the others materials for the detection of PGA, 1 and 2 exhibit relatively low detection limits (LODs) both in water and in urine (where the 1 in water and urine were 0.33 μM and 0.43 μM in the range of 0-0.39 mM, and those of 2 were 0.28 μM and 0.49 μM in the range of 0-0.59 mM, respectively). In addition, the sensors have excellent anti-interference ability, high stability, rapid response, and can easily distinguish between different concentrations of PGA with the naked eye. The developed paper probes were achieved practical sensing applications for portable detecting PGA in urine.

Abstract:Bisphenol A (BPA) is an endocrine disruptor that leaches into food and is significantly employed in food and beverage storage, and source water cycles. To ensure an outstanding and sustainable biosphere while safeguarding human health and well-being, BPA detection is essential, necessitating an efficient detection methodology. Here, we describe an easy-to-use, inexpensive, and overly sensitive electrochemical detector that uses Fe-MOF nanotextures for identifying BPA in groundwater. This sensing electrode device combines the excellent guest interaction potential of organic ligands with the substantial surface area of metal. Using various analytical techniques including scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and powder X-ray diffraction (XRD), the structural and physicochemical behaviours of the as-synthesized material were evaluated. Electrochemical BPA detection was enabled by a diffusion-controlled oxidation procedure with a comparable number of both protons and electrons. With a 0.1 μM detection limit, the sensor displayed a linear sensitivity of around 0.1 μM and 15 μM. Additionally, the sensors demonstrated an outstanding recovery with actual water samples as well as a repeatable and steady performance over the course of a month exhibiting minimal interference from typical inorganic and organic species. Due to its notable sensitivity, inexpensive cost, robust selectivity, excellent repeatability, and reuse ability, the electroanalytical possibilities of the Fe-MOF-modified GCE suggest that the device can be implemented into real-world applications in its primed condition.

Abstract:Nitrophenol is a common industrial intermediate with a potential threat to human health. Luminescent metal–organic frameworks (LMOFs) make it possible to detect nitrophenol rapidly and sensitively, but this method still suffers from the confusion of nitrophenol analogs and the lack of portability. In this paper, by loading two lanthanide metal ions Eu 3+ and Tb 3+ into mixed-ligand LMOF Uio-66-(COOH) 2 /NDC, a multiple-emissive luminescent sensor array for three nitrophenol isomers was obtained. Through the diverse response of the three luminescence centers to the three nitrophenol isomers and the linear discriminant analysis method, nanoscale Eu 3+ /Tb 3+ @Uio-66-(COOH) 2 /NDC exhibits excellent capability to recognize three nitrophenol isomers at concentrations ranging from 40 to 100 μM, distinguish binary or ternary mixtures at 60 μM and achieve semi-quantification in concentrations ranging from 0 to 80 μM. Furthermore, as a proof of concept, a film-based array sensor is prepared by doping Eu 3+ /Tb 3+ @Uio-66-(COOH) 2 /NDC nanoparticles in sodium alginate hydrogel, which shows excellent portability and optical stability while maintaining the distinguishing performance to nitrophenol. Considering the diversity of LMOFs and hydrogels, the strategy of constructing the MOF/hydrogel film-based array sensor is expected to provide new ideas for the distinction of more analogs and make the application of LMOFs in real life full of possibilities.

Single atom nanozyme sensing platform for simultaneous rapid detection of multiple bisphenols

Abstract:Bisphenol compounds (BPA, BPS, BPAF, etc.) are one class of the most important and widespread pollutants that poses severe threat to human health and the ecological environment. Because of the presence of multiple bisphenols in environmental and food samples, it is urgent and challenging to develop a rapid and cheap technique for simultaneously detecting BPA and its analogues. In this study, a series of M-N-C (M = Cu, Mg, Ni, Co, Fe, K) single-atom nanozymes (SAzymes) were created by simulating the structure of natural enzyme molecules, which were used as novel sensing platform for the fabrication of electrochemical sensors. Through systematic screening and characterization, it was interestingly discovered that the electrochemical sensor based on Cu-N-C SAzymes exhibited the best sensing performance for bisphenols among all SAzymes, which catalyzed not only BPA like tyrosinase, but also showed excellent catalytic capacity beyond tyrosinase (tyrosinase has no catalytic activity for BPS, BPAF, etc.), and achieved potential-resolved simultaneous rapid detection of BPA, BPS and BPAF. Further structure-activity relationship and catalytic mechanism characterizations of Cu-N-C SAzymes revealed that the presence of single atom Cu was predominantly in the form of Cu+ and Cu2+, which were anchored onto graphene nanosheet support through four coordination bonds with pyridinic N and pyrrolic N and acted as highly efficient active centers for electrocatalytic oxidation of bisphenols. The developed electrochemical sensing method exhibited excellent selectivity, sensitivity, and reliability for the rapid detection of multiple bisphenols in actual samples.
Lanthanide MOF-based luminescent sensor array for detection and identification of contaminants in water and biomarkers

Abstract:In today's society, heavy metal ions and antibiotic contaminants have caused great harm to water systems and human health. In this study, six isostructural lanthanide metal-organic frameworks [Ln(H 3 imda) 2 (TPA)(H 2 O) 2 ](Tb for CUST-881 , Eu for CUST-882 , Dy for CUST-883 , Er for CUST-884 , Nd for CUST-885 , Sm for CUST-886 ) were constructed by selecting terephthalic acid (TPA) and 4,5-Imidazoledicarboxylic acid (H 3 imda) and lanthanide metal ions via solvethermal method. Among them, CUST-881 and CUST-882 can selectively detect Fe 3+ , Cr 2 O 7 2− , CrO 4 2 , and ceftriaxone sodium (CRO) in water systems and uric acid in urine. CUST-881 shows very low detection limits for these five substances. Furthermore, Principal Component Analysis (PCA) was used to distinguish Fe 3+ , Cr 2 O 7 2− , CrO 4 2−, and CRO in water. To our knowledge, this is the first time that they have been able to be simultaneously distinguished. In addition, the possible sensing mechanism was studied through UV–visible spectroscopy, Infrared spectroscopy, and PXRD analysis. Furthermore, the probe also showed satisfactory repeatability and recovery when applied to UA samples that simulated urine. Based on the above results, lanthanide metal-organic frameworks have great potential for practical monitoring of contaminants in water environments.

Abstract:The presence of antibiotics in aquatic environments has recently raised significant concerns due to their toxic effects as well as the propagation of antibiotic resistances. Thus, efforts are devoted to developing facile screening methods for sulfonamide antibiotics in waters. In this study, we designed a fluorescent array comprising three structurally different pyrene-based luminescent metal-organic framework (LMOF) sensors and applied it in the simultaneous screening of multiple sulfonamides. The pyrene-based LMOFs produced fluorescence quenching responses to sulfonamides via the static quenching mechanism and/or inner filter effect. The array was able to effectively sense and discriminate five structurally similar sulfonamides (sulfamethoxazole, sulfadiazine, sulfapyridine, sulfamerazine, and sulfamethazine), individual sulfonamide at different concentrations, and mixtures of two sulfonamides with various molar ratios. The detection limit of the pyrene-based MOF array for individual sulfonamide was lower than most previously reported fluorescent sensors. It also afforded a fast sulfonamide response (response equilibrium <2 min) owing to the open and uniform nanoporous structures of the LMOF array elements, which allowed a screening speed as fast as approximately 20 min/100 samples. The constructed array exhibited good performance in the discrimination of sulfonamides in real water samples, validating its practicability. This study provides a convenient strategy for the rapid screening of sulfonamide antibiotics in aquatic environments. It also validates the application potential of LMOF array in fluorescence sensing fields.
Biomimetic androgen receptor-based AIE biosensor for detecting bisphenol analogues: An integrating in silico topological analysis, molecular docking, and experimental validation study

Abstract:Bisphenol analogues are the typical class of endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs) that interfere with binding of endogenous hormones to androgen receptor (AR). With the expansion of industrial activities and the intensification of environmental pollution, an increasing array of bisphenol analogues is being released into the environment and food chain. This highlights the urgency to develop sensitive methods for the detection of bisphenol analogues. Here, we propose a biomimetic AR-based biosensor platform for detecting bisphenol analogues (BPF, TBBPA, and TBBPS) by binding with Aggregation-Induced Emission (AIE) probes. Following a comparison of the PROSS and ABACUS methods, biomimetic AR was designed using the ABACUS approach and subsequently expressed in vitro via the E. coli expression system. Through molecular docking and the observation of fluorescence changes upon binding with biomimetic AR, BS-46006 was selected as the AIE probe for the biosensor. The biomimetic AR-based biosensor showed sensitive detections of BPF, TBBPA, and TBBPS within a range of 0-50 mM. To further elucidate the multi-residue recognition mechanism, molecular orbitals, Electron Localization Function (ELF), and Localized Orbital Locator (LOL) were systematically calculated in this study. Lowest unoccupied molecular orbital and highest occupied molecular orbital indicated the energy gap of BPF, TBBPA, and TBBPS, which correspond to 0.12812, 0.19689, and 0.18711 eV, respectively. ELF and LOL offered clearer perspective through heat maps to visually represent the electron delocalization in BPF, TBBPA, and TBBPS. The matrix effect analysis suggested that the responses of bisphenol analogues in soil matrices could be effectively mitigated through sample pretreatment. The analysis of spiked soil samples showed the acceptable recoveries ranged from 91 % to 105 %. Additionally, the biomimetic AR-based AIE biosensor, which combines multi-residue detection with Tolerable Daily Intakes, shows great promise for the risk assessment of bisphenol analogues. This research may present a viable approach for the analysis of environmental pollutants.

Abstract:In this study, a novel electrochemical sensor was constructed based on gold nanoparticles-MoS2 nanoflowers/ionic liquid functionalized graphene (AuNPs/MoS2-NFs/IL-graphene) nanocomposites for low level detection of bisphenol (BPA). The prepared nanocomposites were characterized by scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. The prepared nanocomposites were also explored the effect of pH and scan rate to the results. The electrochemical performance of the sensor was then evaluated by cyclic voltammetry and differential pulse voltammetry, and it was showed that the sensor had prominent electrochemistry activity towards the BPA. Under the optimized experimental conditions, a large linear relationship in the range of 0.05–4.0 μM was detected between the peak current and the concentration of BPA, and the detection limit was 0.028 μM. The results showed that the sensor had high sensitivity, great selectivity, and excellent stability. Finally, the developed electrochemical sensor was successfully applied toward the determination of BPA in lake water samples and the satisfactory recoveries ranged from 95.7% to 105.4%. Thus, this sensor provided a promising candidate for BPA detection in the environmental water.

Abstract:Bisphenol A (BPA) is an emerging contaminant with servere toxic effect such as disrupting endocrine system or causing cancer, therefore, developing sensitive and selective sensor for bisphenol-A is very important and interesting. Herein, mesoporous hydroxyapatite (meso-HSP) and mesoporous titanium dioxide (meso-TiO2) and multi-walled carbon nanotutes (MWCNT) onto glassy carbon electrode (GCE) surface, Compared with bare electrode and single layer modified electrode, meso-HAP/meso-TiO2/MWCNT modified electrode not only significantly enhanced the oxidation peak current of bisphenol-A, but also lowered the oxidation overpotential, suggesting that the prepared and the kinetic parameters were also investigated. Under the optimized conditions, the oxidation peak current was proportional to bisphenol-A concentration in the range from 8.0 x 10(-9)-40 x 10(-7) M with the correlation coefficient of 0.9979. The detection limit was 1.0 x 10(9) M (S/N = 3). The fabricated electrode showed good reproductibility, stability and antiinterference. The proposed method was successfully applied to determine bisphenol-A in plastic products and the results were statisfactory.

Abstract:Bisphenol A (BPA) and its halogenated analogs tetrabromobisphenol A (TBBPA) and tetrachlorobisphenol A (TCBPA) are common environmental contaminants and a method for their simultaneous determination is urgently needed. A paper-based analytical device (PAD) was prepared using a metal-organic framework of UiO-66-NH2 coated with molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs) using TBBPA as a template. The maximum adsorption capacity was 120.94 mg g-1 and the imprinting factor was 4.07. The selective recognition ability of this PAD enabled the effective separation of TBBPA, TCBPA and BPA based on paper chromatography. Subsequently, the PAD cut into segments were used individually to determine the presence of target chemicals using a highly sensitive fluorescent method. Under ultraviolet light irradiation, UiO-66-NH2 acts as a photocatalyst to produce reactive oxygen species (ROS) that degrade TBBPA, TCBPA or BPA in the imprinted cavities and the fluorescent signal of 2',7'-dichlorodihydrofluorescein diacetate (H2DCFDA) added as a ROS probe enabled the indirect determination of target chemicals. This method could determine BPA and its halogenated analogs in dust samples simultaneously with detection limits ranging from 0.14 to 0.30 ng g-1. The intraday relative standard deviation (RSD) was ≤6.8% and interday RSD was ≤8.1%. The recoveries ranged from 91.0 to 105.6% with RSD values that were ≤7.5%. The results stemmed from this method were consistent with those obtained from LC-MS/MS. It is an environmentally-friendly approach due to the degradation of target pollutants and possesses many advantages such as high selectivity, low cost and easy-to-fabrication.
