Abstract:The effectiveness and mechanism of aluminum/iron co-modified calcite (Al/Fe-CA) for the control of phosphorus (P) liberation from sediments was investigated. The results showed that Al/Fe-CA possessed good sorption performance for phosphate, and the maximum phosphate sorption capacity for Al/Fe-CA could reach 27.0 mg/g. The major mechanisms involved the surface adsorption of phosphate on calcite, the precipitation between phosphate and Ca2+ leached from calcite, and the ligand exchange between Al/Fe-bound hydroxyl groups and phosphate to form the Al-O-P and Fe-O-P inner-sphere complexes. The re-releasing risk of Al/Fe-CA-bound P under the circumstances of normal pH (5-9) and reducing environment was very low. Al/Fe-CA addition could significantly reduce the risk of P releasing from sediment to overlying water (OL-water), and the inactivation of mobile P, reactive soluble P (SRP) and diffusive gradient in thin-films (DGT)-labile P in sediment by Al/Fe-CA had a great part in the suppression of sediment-P liberation to OL-water by the Al/Fe-CA amendment. Al/Fe-CA capping and fabric-wrapped Al/Fe-CA capping both could greatly reduce the risk of P releasing from sediment into OL-water, and the formation of a static layer with low concentrations of SRP and DGT-labile P in the upper sediment was the key to sustaining a high P controlling efficiency. When the applied mode of Al/Fe-CA varied from capping to amendment, although the inactivation efficiency of DGT-labile P in the overlying water and upper sediment by Al/Fe-CA would decrease to a certain degree, the inactivation efficiency of DGT-labile P in the lower sediment by Al/Fe-CA would increase. Results of this study suggest that Al/Fe-CA has the high potential to be used as an active capping or amendment material for the management of internal P loading in surface water bodies.

Abstract:Excessive nutrient loading and changing hydrological regimes can significantly impact the ecological function of wetland ecosystems. Three wetland sediment samples collected from West Lake, Xiazhuhu Wetland and Baoyang River in the Taihu Lake Watershed, China, were compared to understand the P retention properties responding to hydrological regimes by using static column and steady-flow flume laboratory-scale experiments. Sediment in Xiazhuhu Wetland currently function as a P sink with equilibrium P concentration (EPC0) values of 0.010mgL−1, while sediments from West Lake and Baoyang River, have EPC0 values of 0.050mgL−1 and 0.023mgL−1, respectively, and serve as an internal P source. The P retention by sediments ranged from 17.20 to 22.61mgm−2d−1 under 35-d static conditions, while sediment beds continuously fed by the simulated inflow water containing 2mgL−1 P ranged from 59.20 to 171.93mgm−2d−1. The P removal capacities by sediments were higher during the rainy season than the dry season when wetlands were subjected to excessive P input. Since the majority of external P stored in sediment is in the form of Al-P (e.g., for Xiazhuhu wetland), the application of alum to water column could potentially increase the P retention capacity of sediment.

Abstract:Aluminum-based P-inactivation agent (Al-PIA) is a highly effective material for phosphorus removal, which has great potential to restore eutrophic water bodies. In this study, active capping plate (ACP) was formed by mixing Al-PIA with cement and fly ash. The scour resistance coefficient of the prepared ACP was 98.01 % and the water permeability coefficient was 0.139 cm/s, which meet the requirements of strength and water permeability. Exogenous phosphorus was used as an input in the indoor dynamic experiment to examine the effectiveness of ACP capping to control phosphorus in sediment-water system. The indoor dynamic experiment lasted for 110 days. After experiment, the effect of dissolved oxygen (DO) and pH was explored, the change of phosphorus concentration in the overlying water was examined, and the changes of phosphorus in ACP and sediments were also analyzed. After ACP capping, the pH eventually maintained below 8 and was slightly higher than that of the control system. The DO concentration initially decreased, then increased, and finally remained in the range of 7 to 8 mg/L. Compared to the control system, the average reduction rates of total phosphorus (TP), dissolve total phosphorus (DTP) and dissolve inorganic phosphorus (DIP) in the overlying water were 90.57%, 91.69%, and 92.80%, respectively. ACP promotes the conversion of unstable phosphorus in sediments to stable phosphorus, and calcium-bound phosphorus (Ca-P) is the main form of phosphorus fixed by ACP. In addition, ACP was found to have a limited effect on reducing the risk of release of biologically available phosphorus from sediments.

Abstract:We determined the effects of quartz sand (QS), water treatment plant sludge (WTPS), aluminum-based P-inactivation agent (Al-PIA), and lanthanum-modified bentonite (LMB) thin-layer capping on controlling phosphorus and nitrogen release from the sediment, using a static simulation experiment. The sediment in the experiment was sampled from Yundang Lagoon (Xiamen, Fujian Province, China), which is a eutrophic waterbody. The total phosphorus (TP), ammonium nitrogen (NH+4-N), and total organic carbon (TOC) levels in the overlying water were measured at regular intervals, and the changes of different P forms in WTPS, Al-PIA, and sediment of each system were analyzed before and after the test. The average TP reduction rates of LMB, Al-PIA, WTPS, and QS were 94.82, 92.14, 86.88, and 10.68%, respectively, when the release strength of sediment TP was 2.26–9.19 mg/(m2·d) and the capping strength of the materials was 2 kg/m2. Thin-layer capping of LMB, WTPS, and Al-PIA could effectively control P release from the sediment (P < 0.05). However, thin-layer capping of LMB, Al-PIA, and QS did not significantly reduce the release of ammonium N and organic matter (P > 0.05). Based on our results, LMB, Al-PIA, and WTPS thin-layer capping promoted the migration and transformation of easily released P in sediment. The P adsorbed by WTPS and Al-PIA mainly occurred in the form of NAIP.

Abstract:The efficiency of iron/aluminum co-modified zeolite (FeAl-Z) covering and amendment for controlling the internal loading of phosphorus (P) from sediment to the overlying water (OW) and its controlling mechanism were explored. The response of the composition of sedimentary microbial communities in sediment and their function to the FeAl-Z capping and amendment was also examined. FeAl-Z showed good removal performance for phosphate in aqueous solution. The maximum phosphate adsorption quantity for FeAl-Z at pH 7 attained 11.2 mg P/g. The release of sediment endogenous phosphorus to OW can be successfully restrained by the FeAl-Z covering and amendment, and the suppression ability of FeAl-Z covering was stronger than that of FeAl-Z amendment. Under the capping or amendment condition, FeAl-Z can effectively inactivate the labile phosphorus measured by diffusion gradient in thin film (DGT-LP) in the overlying water and surface sediment. The added FeAl-Z transformed redox-sensitive phosphorus (BD-P) to metal oxide-bound phosphorus (NaOH-IP) and residual phosphorus (Res-P) in sediment, which increased the stability of inorganic phosphorus in the sediment. The passivation of soluble reactive phosphorus (SRP) and DGT-LP in the surface sediment by FeAl-Z significantly contributed to the inhibition of sediment endogenous phosphorus release to OW by the FeAl-Z capping, and the passivation of SRP, DGT-LP and mobile phosphorus in the surface sediment played a pivotal role in the control of sediment internal phosphorus release by the FeAl-Z amendment. The FeAl-Z amendment and capping did not increase the liberation risk of Fe from sediment, and the microorganisms in the sediments under the conditions of FeAl-Z amendment and covering still can perform good ecological functions. Results of this research demonstrate that FeAl-Z capping has high application potential in the control of phosphorus transfer from sediment to OW.

Abstract:It is well-known that the activated thin-layer capping covering by secondary capping of contaminated sediment poses a threat to the inactivation of activated material. In this study, the static simulation experiment was conducted to study the effect of secondary capping thickness by sediment on the control of TP release from the sediment by aluminum-based P-inactivation agent (Al-PIA), and to propose the phosphorus adsorption pathway of Al-PIA. The results showed that Al-PIA could effectively reduce the release of phosphorus pollutants from the sediment at the capping intensity of 2 kg/m2. When the secondary capping thickness of sediment were 0, 2, 4, 7, 10, and 15 mm, the average removal rates of TP were 87.57%, 76.39%, 61.22%, 51.32%, 41.93%, and 32.11%, respectively, indicating that the removal efficiency of phosphorus decreased with the increase of the secondary capping thickness of the sediment. The adsorbed phosphorus by Al-PIA was mainly non-apatite inorganic phosphorus (NAIP) in inorganic phosphorus. With the increase of the secondary capping thickness of sediment, the NAIP proportion of phosphorus adsorbed by Al-PIA increased. Meanwhile, the removal rate of phosphorus in the activated capping system showed a first increase and then decrease trend, and the removal rates of total phosphorus (TP), inorganic phosphorus (IP), and organic phosphorus (OP) were obvious except for that of organic phosphorus (OP).

Abstract:In this study, aluminum-based P-inactivation agent (Al-PIA) was used as a high-efficiency microbial carrier, and the biological Al-PIA (BA-PIA) was prepared by artificial aeration. Laboratory static experiments were conducted to study the effect of BA-PIA on reducing nitrogen and phosphorus contents in water. Physicochemical characterization and isotope tracing method were applied to analyze the removal mechanism of nitrogen and phosphorus. High-throughput techniques were used to analyze the characteristic bacterial genus in the BA-PIA system. The nitrogen and phosphorus removal experiment was conducted for 30 days, and the removal rates of NH4+-N, TN and TPtby BA-PIA were 81.87%, 66.08% and 87.97%, respectively. The nitrogen removal pathways of BA-PIA were as follows: the nitrification reaction accounted for 59.0% (of which denitrification reaction accounted for 56.4%), microbial assimilation accounted for 18.1%, and the unreacted part accounted for 22.9%. The characteristic bacteria in the BA-PIA system were Streptomyces, Nocardioides, Saccharopolyspora, Nitrosomonas, and Marinobacter. The loading of microorganisms only changed the surface physical properties of Al-PIA (such as specific surface area, pore volume and pore size), without changing its surface chemical properties. The removal mechanism of nitrogen by BA-PIA is the conversion of NH4+-N into NO2−-N and NO3−-N by nitrifying bacteria, which are then reduced to nitrogen-containing gas by aerobic denitrifying bacteria. The phosphorus removal mechanism is that metal compounds (such as Al) on the surface of BA-PIA fix phosphorus through chemisorption processes, such as ligand exchange. Therefore, BA-PIA overcomes the deficiency of Al-PIA with only phosphorus removal ability, and has better application prospects.

Abstract:In a patient with a peroneal neuropathy, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) allowed characterization of a complex para-articular cyst into three different types of cysts, all derived from the superior tibiofibular joint: 1) an intraneural cyst extending along the articular branch to the common peroneal nerve; an interconnected intraneural component extending within the extensor digitorum muscle neural branch, penetrating the fascia of the anterior compartment, and reaching the subcutaneous tissues; 2) an intraosseous cyst isolated to the fibular head and neck, and 3) an extraneural cyst heading toward the tibial nerve and vessels. Joint resection and articular branch disconnection led to excellent functional recovery; an MRI confirmed no cyst recurrence. This case illustrates that different types of cysts can derive from a single joint of origin and extend in various locations and that the articular (synovial) theory is versatile for demonstrating a joint connection, even in unusual appearing combinations of cysts.
Physi-chemical mechanism and control effect of CaO2 inhibiting phosphorus release from sediments under different dosing modes

Abstract:CaO2 is known as an outstanding restoration agent to control phosphorus (P) release from sediments, and its mechanism is believed to depend on chemical passivation. However, we found that the physical actions might also be involved in inhibiting endogenous P release induced by CaO2. To further explore the mechanism of CaO2 controlling P release and optimize the dosing method, a 94-day incubation experiment was conducted under different CaO2 dosing modes. The results showed that CaO2 could form a dense passivation layer near its dosing position by reducing the median diameter of sediments, thereby inhibiting P release through physical obstruction. At the same time, the increase in the specific surface area and Ca content of sediments induced by CaO2 could synchronously enhance the physical and chemical adsorption properties of sediments to P. In addition, CaO2 could significantly reduce the P concentration in sediment interstitial water and the mobile−P and BAP contents in sediments through chemical oxidation and chemical precipitation. Under the combined actions of physical obstruction, physi-chemical adsorption, chemical oxidation, and chemical precipitation, CaO2 effectively inhibited endogenous P release. Finally, the P release flux in each reactor showed that multiple coverage and shallow injection had the optimal effect on inhibiting P release, and the former is recommended for the water systems with shallow sediments, and the latter is suitable for the water systems with deep sediments. In general, this experiment proposed the physi-chemical mechanism of P immobilization mediated by CaO2, studied the formation characteristics of the passivation layer, and optimized the dosing mode, which can provide valuable reference for the research and application of CaO2 controlling P release.

Abstract:This study applied the techniques of high-resolution dialysis (HR-Peeper) and diffusive gradients in thin films (DGT) to explore the effects and the behind mechanism for inhibition phosphorus (P) releasing from sediments by nFe3O4 capping. The highest decreasing rates of SRP and labile P (i.e., 49% and 47%, respectively) and the decreased flux of SRP showed that nFe3O4 capping can successfully control sediment internal P release. Adsorption by Fe(III) hydroxides with the oxidation of Fe(II) was one of the reasons for the decrease of P concentrations in nFe3O4 capping sediments. This was supported by the increase of Eh and significant negative correlation between Eh with Fe(II) (soluble and labile Fe(II)) and P (SRP and labile P) and significant positive correlation between Fe(II) and P in sediments by nFe3O4 capping. An outer-sphere complex between positively charged nFe3O4 surface groups and P formation was the other reason to decrease the concentrations of P in the nFe3O4 capping sediments. This was supported by the decrease of pH value in sediments by the capping of nFe3O4. This study shows that nFe3O4, when used as capping agent, can effectively control the sediment internal P release, which is expected to be used as a potential material for repairing lake eutrophication.

Phosphorus bioavailability and the diversity of microbial community in sediment in response to modified calcium peroxide ceramsite capping

Abstract:Bioavailability of phosphorus (P) has close relationship with the microbial community in sediments and plays an important role in the sedimentary P release. However, little is known about the relationship between P bioavailability and microbial community under capping conditions. A 62-day experiment was conducted by capping with modified calcium peroxide ceramsite (MCPC) at different addition dosages (from 1:1 to 1:4, the ratio of mobile P in sediment to MCPC). P disappearance and release were expressed by the dissolved inorganic P (DIP) in overlying water. The results show that the proportion of disappeared P in released P was reduced sharply from 44% (Control) to 2% (1:4) under the capping with MCPC. Under the capping, the concentrations of DIP and Fe(Ⅱ) in pore water decreased markedly compared with the control, the removal up to 71.6% and 59.3% (mean, P < 0.05), respectively. The bioavailable P (BAP) presented the obvious decline under the capping with MCPC, which indicates the inhibition on the algae growth. The algae available P (AAP), water soluble P (WSP) and readily desorbable P (RDP) were reduced obviously at the 1:2 ratio compared with the other ratios. On the contrary, the biggest increase of Olsen-P in sediment was at the 1:2 ratio. This may be the explanation why the disappearance of DIP in the pore water was found. The result of microbial community structures in sediment shows that the relative abundance of Proteobacteria and Nitrospirae increased under the MCPC capping. It is analyzed that the microbial diversity is related negatively with the BAP in the sediments under the capping with MCPC, suggesting that microbial diversity is the key to control the BAP.

Abstract:Controlling the release of sediment phosphorus (P) using chemical agents is a promising method for controlling internal P in eutrophic lakes. However, mineral P formation and changes in the organic P composition after sediment amendment with P-inactivation agents remain poorly understood. Furthermore, little is known about the changes in the sediment microbial community composition after remediation. Here, various ratios of poly aluminum chloride (PAC) and lanthanum-modified bentonite (LMB) were added to nutrient-rich sediments and incubated. Sequential P extraction, solution/solid-state 31 P nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), and microbial analyses were periodically performed on the inactivated sediments. The results indicate that PAC and LMB effectively reduced sediment iron-bound P and organic P, respectively, markedly increasing the content of aluminum- and calcium-bound P in the sediment, respectively. Solid-state 31 P NMR results confirmed the formation of rhabdophane (LaPO 4 . nH 2 O) in the LMB-amended sediment. Solution 31 P NMR results showed that PAC preferentially reduced the organic P fractions of pyrophosphate, whereas LMB efficiently reduced the organic P fractions of orthophosphate, monoesters, and diesters in the sediment. Compared with the control sediment, PAC addition can cause short-term negative effects on sediment microbes at high doses, whereas LMB addition can increase bacterial diversity or richness in the sediment. These results provide a deeper understanding of the differences between PAC and LMB in internal sediment P control.

Abstract:The effectiveness and mechanism of hydrous zirconium oxide/magnesium hydroxide composite (MZ) to control sedimentary phosphorus (P) liberation were explored. The impacts of MZ on the microbial communities in sediment were examined. MZ displayed good phosphate adsorption performance. At pH 7, the greatest monolayer adsorption amount of phosphate onto MZ in the simultaneous presence of common ions was 67.7 mg/g, which was evidently larger than that onto hydrous zirconium oxide (39.8 mg/g). MZ addition and capping both can effectively mitigate the internal P loading from sediment to the overlying water (OW), and MZ is more suitable for use as an amendment to control internal P release to OW than magnesium hydroxide. In our study, MZ amendment and capping resulted in 94.3%-97.8% and 96.6%-99.2% reduction of soluble reactive P (SRP) in OW, respectively. The passivation of SRP, diffusion gradient in thin-film unstable P and mobile P in the upper sediment played a pivotal role in the interception of endogenous P liberation to OW by MZ. Most of P inactivated by MZ is difficult to be released in common pH and reductive environment. Although MZ addition and capping can reshape the structure of microbial communities in the surface sediment, the microbial communities in the MZ-amended and capped sediments still can exert good ecological functions related to carbon, nitrogen, sulfur and iron cycles predicted by the Functional Annotation of Prokaryotic Taxa (FAPROTAX) analysis. Our findings suggest that MZ is promising amendment and capping materials for mitigating P release from sediment in freshwater ecosystems.

Abstract:In this article, dynamic simulation experiments have studied the effects of three capping materials, quartz sand (QS), aluminum-based phosphorus-locking agent (Al-PIA), and lanthanum-modified bentonite (LMB) in reducing phosphorus load in eutrophic water bodies. The changes of various forms of phosphorus in Al-PIA and sediment before and after the test were analyzed, and the mechanism of phosphorus migration and transformation in different capping systems was described. The dynamic simulation test lasted 95 days. The results showed that when the initial concentration of total phosphorus (TP) was 3.55 mg/L, the capping strength was 2 kg/m2 and the hydraulic retention time of water circulation was 0.5 days, indicating that the average reduction rates of TP by LMB, Al-PIA and QS systems were 74.66%, 69.54%, and 3.64%, respectively, compared with the control system. The analysis of variance showed that there were significant differences (P < 0.05) in the TP concentration of the overlying water between the LMB, Al-PIA capping system, and the control system. Lanthanum ions in LMB can fix phosphorus. Al-PIA reduces the phosphorus concentration in water by means of ion exchange, adsorption, complexation, etc. LMB and Al-PIA promoted the migration of phosphorus in sediment. Among them, the phosphorus fixed by Al-PIA was mainly in the form of non-apatite inorganic phosphorus (NAIP) in inorganic phosphorus (IP), which can be seen; Al-PIA can effectively reduce the phosphorus load of eutrophic water.

Abstract:Polyaluminum chloride (PAC) is a traditional material used for immobilizing sediment internal phosphorus (P) in field-scale experiment. Lanthanum carbonate (LC) is an emerging material which have been used in immobilizing sediment internal P in laboratory. To promote LC in practice, the premise is that it does have advantages over traditional material when used. Herein, a 90-day incubation experiment was conducted comparing the effectiveness and mechanism of LC and PAC capping in controlling sediment internal P. The results of isotherm experiment and XPS analysis indicated that the adsorption mechanism of P onto LC and PAC involved ligand exchange and formation of inner-sphere La/Al-O-P complexes. The incubation experiment revealed that PAC capping was more effective in reducing pore water soluble reactive phosphorus (SRP), exhibiting a reduction of up to 81.32 % but showed a decrease trend. However, LC capping resulted in a reduction of pore water SRP up to 52.84 % and maintained stability. On average, LC and PAC capping reduced SRP flux by 0.27 and 0.32 μg·m −2 d −1 , respectively relative to the control sediment. Moreover, LC capping facilitated the formation of Fe(III)/Mn(IV) oxyhydroxides, leading to an increased P adsorption, whereas PAC capping facilitated the reduction of Fe(III)/Mn(IV) minerals with P release. Additionally, LC capping resulted in the reduction of a higher ratio of mobile P/TP to stable P forms than PAC capping, as compared to the control. In contrast to PAC capping which converted mobile P to stable NaOH-rP, LC capping transformed mobile P and NaOH-rP into more stable HCl-P and ResP. Both LC and PAC capping caused variations in sediment bacterial communities. Nevertheless, PAC capping heightened the risk of Co, Ni, Cu, and Pb releases in sediment compared to LC capping. In summary, this study suggested that LC capping surpassed PAC capping in immobilizing sediment internal P.

Abstract:Treatment of lake sediments with salts is a promising approach for preventing phosphorus release from sediments. Five 35-d treatments of undisturbed sediment cores in the East Lake, Wuhan, China were applied under anoxic conditions: nothing added (control), Al2(SO4)3 added, FeCl3 added, CaCl2 added, and NaNO3 added. To identify changes in the P binding sites in the sediment caused by the treatments, different P binding forms were extracted from the sediment before and after the treatments. We found that the mean P release rates for anoxic treatments with Al2(SO4)3, FeCl3, CaCl2 and NaNO3 were −0.6, 0.03, 0.6 and 2.6 mg/(m2·d), respectively, while the P release rate with no additives was 7.3 mg/(m2·d). In suboxic conditions, the concentration of total phosphorus (TPaverage 657 mg/kg) in sediment was much lower than that of untreated sediment (TPaverage 688 mg/kg) and treatments with salts (TP(Al2(SO4)3) 793 mg/kg, TP(FeCl3) 781 mg/kg, TP(NaNO3) 802 mg/kg, TP(CaCl2) 747 mg/kg). We also found that adding CaCl2 prevented P release because of apatite formation and because PCa (Ca bound P) increased at the sediment surface. Addition of Fe3+ and NO3− to the sediment increased the amounts of PFe, Mn (Redox-sensitive P, mostly Fe and Mn compounds), since iron oxide has the ability to combine P. Addition of Al2(SO4)3 increased the fraction of PAl, Fe (P bound to metal oxides (Al, Fe)) and decreased the P and Fe in the water above the anoxic sediment, showing the greater ability of Al in binding P. The results showed that Al2(SO4)3, FeCl3, CaCl2 and NaNO3 all had an effect in controlling phosphorus release. The effect was related to the forms of phosphorus existing in the sediment before treatment and the forms resulting after adding the four reagents. The combination of Al3+ or Fe3+ with NO3− promises to be a reasonable chemical treatment for increasing the P retention capacity of sediments in eutrophic lakes. If chemical treatment is combined with bioremediation, the aim of environmental repair may be achieved.

Abstract:Purpose: Nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) are the key elements leading to eutrophication, and it is important to jointly control N and P release from sediments into the water column. Methods: Different mixed materials including P sorbent, natural organic carbon (C), and an oxidizing agent were applied in a 1-year pilot-scale experiment. Results: The addition of iron-rich (IR) clay and Phoslock agent promoted the formation of iron bound P (Fe(OOH)~P) and calcium bound P (CaCO3~P) in sediments, respectively. IR clay offered more advantages in immobilization of phosphorus as refractory P, and the Phoslock agent more effectively reduced the risk of P release into water, which was expressed as a low equilibrium P concentration (EPC0). Mixtures of sugarcane (SU) detritus and IR clay exhibited high carbohydrate (CHO) contents, which further fuelled both denitrification and dissimilatory nitrate reduction to ammonium (DNRA). This indicated that the SU dosage should be controlled to avoid DNRA over denitrification. Attention should be given to the fact that SU introduction significantly promoted the generation of an anaerobic state, leading to the desorption and release of Fe(OOH)~P, which could be alleviated by using Oxone. Multienzyme activity analysis showed that P and N transformation shifted from P desorption to organic P hydrolysis and from ammonification to denitrification and DNRA, respectively. Conclusion: We recommend the use of P sorbent and organic C combined with oxidizing agents as effective mixed materials for sediment remediation, which could enhance P adsorption and provide electron donors for denitrification, while also avoiding the generation of anoxia.

Abstract:Aquatic environment factors often influence and regulate the direction of phosphorus (P) flow at the sediment-water interface (SWI). High pH and low DO, common in eutrophic lakes, would induce large releases of P from sediment, and thus cause the negative effect on the efficiency of some P-passivators. Hence, the development of P passivators that could function over a wide range of pH condition and redox state in the overlaying water with reduced undesirable side effects is critical for the eutrophic lake remediation. In the present study, a calcium (Ca)/aluminum (Al) composite (CA) and a lanthanum (La)/Ca/Al composite (LCA) were prepared for P immobilization in lake sediments, using calcium and lanthanum coprecipitated with aluminum. CA and LCA were shown to have good P sorption performance at pH 4–11, particularly at pH 8–11. Furthermore, CA and LCA have an ability to correct the pH of water that deviates from neutral. The maximum P adsorption (Q max ) of sediment amended by 4 % CA and 4 % LCA increased by 83 % and 103 %, and their equilibrium P concentration (EPC 0 ) decreased by 76 % and 88 %, respectively. Under various pH and DO conditions, the P concentration in overlying water was significantly decreased by CA and LCA amendment, and their addition could effectively counteract the P release from sediments induced by high pH and low DO. The mechanisms of P immobilization in amended sediments under various pH and DO levels are primarily the conversion of reactive P to stable P. The P immobilization performance of CA and LCA could cope with a wide range of pH and redox conditions in eutrophic lakes, and they would help to correct extreme pH values, thus they are expected to be a new generation of commercial P-passivators.

Abstract:It is crucial to develop a phosphorus (P) sorbent to immobilize sediment mobile P from shallow eutrophic lakes with frequent sediment resuspension and high pH values. In this study, lanthanum (La) and aluminum (Al) were co-incorporated into granulated thermally treated calcium-rich attapulgite (TCAP) to prepare a novel P sorbent to overcome these problems in eutrophic lake management. The maximum P sorption capacity of the La/Al comodified TCAP (LA@TCAP) is 10.6 mg/g, and the granulated P sorbent performs well in a wide range of pH values during sorption from solution. A total of 124 days of sediment incubation study (34 days of aerobic incubation and 90 days of anaerobic incubation) indicated that more than 50% of the soluble reactive phosphorus (SRP) in overlying water can be reduced with the theoretical dosage in comparison with the control treatment. More than 40% of P flux across the sediment-water can be reduced with a theoretical dosage, and 60% of the mobile fraction of P in surface sediment can be reduced and transformed into stable inert P fractions such as NaOH-rP (Al-P) and HCl-P (Ca-P) during the whole period of incubation. Results also indicated that the granule LA@TCAP can stabilize surface sediment and thus reduce suspended solids, SRP, and TP in a water column in simulated frequent sediment resuspension when compared with traditional P sorbent (aluminium sulfate). Furthermore, the inactivated P forms in sediment remained relatively stable under elevated pH values. XPS analysis indicated that P sorbed by LA@TCAP mainly formed by inner-sphere complexation with Al and La. All results of this study indicate that LA@TCAP has the potential for sediment P remediation from shallow eutrophic lakes.
