Abstract:A large-scale multi-infeed direct current (MIDC) system leads to the relatively weak voltage support capability in the receiving AC system. Although it is critical to enhance the strength of AC system for mitigating severe voltage stability issues, it may exacerbate the short-circuit current (SCC) level at the same time. Since the network structure of the MIDC plays a significant role in dealing with the dilemma between grid strength and SCC level, this paper proposes a power network structure optimization method with constraints of static voltage stability and SCC level. First, the generalized short circuit ratio (gSCR) is applied to assess the grid strength of receiving AC system of the MIDC in terms of static voltage stability. Second, the relations between the gSCR and the SCC level are explored. Finally, we propose a solution algorithm based on the sensitivity analysis of SCC, with the goal of minimizing the number of lines to be opened by satisfying the constraints of the gSCR and the SCC level. The proposed method is verified to be effective by simulations that it can both limit the SCC level and ensure the static voltage stability of receiving AC system of the MIDC.

Abstract:Resilience of the power system against natural disasters is a vital need for sustainable energy supply. As a result of global warming, lakes and rivers have dried out, resulting in dust hubs that threaten the normal operation of outdoor power system equipment. Unlike other events like hurricanes and blizzards, the impact of extreme salt dust on power system insulator failures and network resilience in affected areas remains unexamined. In this paper, to avoid power curtailment caused by insulators breakdown in electricity distribution networks, the resiliency assessment and enhancement of these networks against salt dust is investigated. Failure mechanism analysis of insulators and fragility curves extraction of them in face of salt pollution and relative humidity are done using mathematical modelling and experimental tests to extract the breakdown probability; Experimental tests are conducted in the High Voltage Laboratory, University of Tehran (HVLUT) and a novel method is proposed to extract 3-dimensional fragility curves of insulators. A Monte Carlo-based resiliency assessment method is then employed to obtain resiliency curve against the salt dust. Some suitable indicators are introduced for this purpose. In addition, several resiliency enhancement measures are proposed and ranked using a benefit to cost ratio (BCR) index. Numerical simulations are conducted on two real distribution feeders in a distribution grid around Urmia Salt Lake, Iran. Numerical results confirm the effectiveness and applicability of the proposed method.
Upgrading of 10 Kv Distribution Transformer and Prefabricated Substation to 20 Kv Voltage Level

Abstract:The technical feasibility of voltage upgrading is analyzed by calculating the parameters of core,high-voltage winding and low-voltage winding for various types of 10 kV distribution transformer,and the economic effect is compared among different upgrading schemes for selecting the optimal one.Results show that,10 kV dry-type transformer can be technically upgraded to 20 kV level by capacity reduction but the cost is higher than new 20 kV dry-type transformer with same capacity,so it should be replaced by 20 kV one;about 90 % of 10 kV oil-filled transformers can be easily upgraded to 20 kV level without capacity reduction by high-voltage winding replacement and the cost is about 35 % 45 % of new 20 kV oil-filled transformer with same capacity;it is possible to upgrade European prefabricated substation from 10 kV to 20 kV;American prefabricated substation should be replaced by 20 kV one.

Abstract:Nowadays, due to the ever increasing energy consumption and power supply optimization, it is required to construct new power plants, substations and transmission lines. In Iran, also, because of increasing demand for electrical energy, for a significant power loss reduction in power transmission over long distances, and to construct high transmission lines that lead to reduction in the economic costs of transmission lines, the transmission lines must be considered at extra high voltage (EHV) levels. These EHV levels should be compared with the low voltage levels in order to extract the benefits. Therefore, in this paper, a review has been conducted on the types of 765 kV transmission lines used in different countries and a comparison between them and the low voltage levels have been performed. Accordingly, the advantages of EHV transmission lines are summarized. Finally, designing a line of 765 kV single-circuit with 6 conductors per bundle based on existing standards is presented. Abstract:The distribution systems are the most unbalanced part of the power network. Voltage unbalance can cause major problems, such as the abnormal performance of the induction motors with their load increment, the network reliability decrement, and the power losses increment. So, phase balancing should be implemented in the distribution networks through the most effective rephasing strategy. In this paper, the optimal automatic rephasing strategy for the improvement of the distribution system reliability is investigated. Calculations of reliability factors after the rephasing strategy are introduced. Also, the impacts of voltage unbalance on induction motors and their costs are optimized. Generally, this paper focuses on system cost reduction through optimal automatic phase balancing, especially in a smart environment. The proposed optimization model is solved using a self-adaptive modified firefly algorithm (SAMFA). The performance of the SAMFA is compared with the ordinary firefly algorithm (FA), particle swarm algorithm (PSO), and genetic algorithm (GA). The proposed method is applied to the Kheibar feeder in Behbahan, Iran. Simulation studies and results analysis greatly demonstrate the significant economic benefits achieved from this research.

Abstract:This paper deals with reconfiguration of distribution system to minimize power losses, deviation of nodes voltages and branches current constraint violations. This means alternation of feeders' topological structure by changing the status of tie and sectionalizing switches. The work presented here is a step forward to define the reconfiguration problem closer to reality by considering the effect of harmonic loads. To solve this complicated combinatorial, non-differentiable constrained optimization problem, novel heuristic optimization techniques such as Shuffled Frog Leaping Algorithm (SFLA) and Imperialist Competitive Algorithm (ICA) are employed. The methods are compared with Discrete Particle Swarm Optimization (DPSO) algorithm to examine their performance including computational time, convergence rate, and accuracy of results. In this context, experiments are conducted on 69-bus and 84-bus distribution test systems for the short- and long-term reconfiguration scenarios. The obtained results establish that harmonic losses are a major deciding factor in reconfiguration and harmonic loads cannot be represented with only fundamental components.

Abstract:<p>The storm, as one of the most frequent natural disasters, has a significant impact on the critical electrical power infrastructure. Therefore, providing a framework to enhance the strength of components of the power system, such as conductors and poles, is a practical means to reduce damage caused by extreme weather events. In response to this critical requirement, this paper presents a framework that includes three stages, i.e. natural occurrence modeling, component vulnerability and network resilience assessment, and network resilience improvement. In order to evaluate the resilience of the network components, fragility models of conductors and poles and Monte Carlo simulation are used. Furthermore, to improve the resilience of the network, vegetation management and upgrading and repairing of network poles are employed as the network hardening strategies. Then, to determine the components of the network that need reinforcement, the hardening problem is formulated as an optimization problem and solved by the genetic algorithm where budget constraints, the criticality of loads, and the accessibility of network components are considered. Finally, the proposed method is applied to a real network to demonstrate the effectiveness of the approach.</p>

Abstract:Although natural disasters have recently imposed enormous damages to power system infrastructures, resilience enhancement through hardening measures is not usually compensated in conventional power system planning. In this article, a framework is proposed to enhance the resilience of distribution systems against earthquakes. In particular, it focuses on substations' retrofit whose failure can affect the distribution system, imposing outages to the customers connected to it. A knapsack based heuristic method, which considers the bus configuration of substation is proposed to select the substation components for hardening. The potential failure of substation components that would lead to complete unavailability of substation is evaluated through minimal cut set-fault tree analysis. A criterion for resilience enhancement is proposed, including hardening cost, cost incurred by damaged components, cost of customers' interruption in the distribution system level, and power generation cost of Distributed Energy Resources. A penalty mechanism taking into account the component repair time is used to estimate interruption costs. The impact of earthquakes on substation components is modeled using fragility curves. A case study with real earthquake characteristics is considered and Monte Carlo simulation is used to capture the stochastic failure of substation components. The results show that power transformers and circuit breakers at 20 kV are the most critical components in the retrofitting strategies.

Abstract:Reconfiguration is a low-cost method to reduce power loss in distribution network (DN). Harmonics and unbalancing cause additional losses in DNs. Therefore, it is necessary to consider these two factors in distribution network reconfiguration (DNR). In this paper, the effect of reconfiguration in two harmonic polluted medium and large scale DN is evaluated. In addition, the effect of harmonic injection of distributed generation (DG) is studied. Moreover, the effect of reconfiguration in unbalanced DN in the presence of single-phase DGs is investigated, and it is concluded that distribution system operator (DSO) should consider network unbalance in DNR to more reduction of power losses. Furthermore, a new flexible lexicography method is introduced to solve multi-objective problems, especially in DNR. In the proposed method, the DSO determines the priority of each goal in comparison to the other goals, instead of using weighing factors of them. This method is effective for power quality goals which cannot be illustrated as cost function. In this paper, validation of the proposed method in IEEE 69 bus and 95 bus practical harmonic polluted DN and 25 bus unbalanced DN in presence of three-phase and single-phase PVs are investigated. Results show the effectiveness of the method in increasing the flexibility of DSO in DNR to improve power quality goals such as harmonics and unbalance, as well as reduce power losses.

Abstract:Natural disasters such as hurricanes damage power distribution systems by low probability- high impact events. Other infrastructures such as water networks will be disrupted due to their dependency on the power network. In this situation, a city or region experiences critical conditions. In this paper, a new resilience index based on social welfare concept is presented to decrease unserved loads, restore the distribution system rapidly and decrease the dependency of water network operation to power network failures. The new resilience index is optimized with effective strategies including: upgrading distribution poles, DG placement with different capacities and distribution system automation. The problem is formulated as a stochastic two-stage optimization. The first-stage decisions are the number of each resilience improvement strategy limited to a predetermined budget. Genetic algorithm is applied to solve the first stage. The objective of the second stage is maximizing the social welfare which is solved by an innovative approach. Numerical simulations are performed on the IEEE 33-bus radial distribution system and designed water network related to it. The results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method.

Abstract:In order to increase the resilience of distribution systems against high-impact low-probability (HILP) events, it is important to prioritize the damaged assets so that the lost loads, especially critical and important loads, can be restored faster. In addition, correctly predicting the number of repair teams during critical times contributes to restoring the network to the initial resilience level. For this reason, this paper discusses the prioritization of electricity supply lines for evaluating the number of required repair teams. To this end, the economic value of distribution system lines has been considered as a criterion representing the sensitivity of the network to hurricanes. The modeling is based on value, in which the load value, failure probability of the poles, fragility curve, duration of line repair by the maintenance team, and the topology factor have been considered. This is so that the significance of the demand side, the failure extent and accessibility of the lines, the importance of time, and the network configuration are considered. The results provide a list of line priority for fault resolution, in which the topology factor has a larger effect. The number of repair teams required to restore critical and important loads is determined from this model. This modeling has been tested on an IEEE 33-bus network. Abstract:This paper presents a robust optimization approach for resiliency improvement in power distribution system. The occurrence of natural disasters has led to an alarming increase in power interruptions, with severe impacts. Compounding this problem is the uncertain nature of data, which presents significant challenges in enhancing the resiliency of power distribution systems following such events. To tackle these issues, this paper introduces a robust optimization approach for improving the resiliency of power distribution systems. The approach encompasses crew teams for switching actions as part of the restoration process, along with demand response programs and mobile generators (MGs). By simultaneously leveraging these elements and considering the uncertainty associated with electrical load and electrical price, the resiliency of the system is enhanced. The objective function is tri‐level, comprising minimum, maximum, and minimum functions. At the first level, the approach minimizes the cost of commitment of combined heat and power plants (CHPs) by taking into account the location of MGs and the reconfiguration structure in power distribution systems. The second level aims to identify the worst‐case scenario for the uncertainty variables. Finally, the third level focuses on minimizing the total operation cost under the worst‐case scenario using demand response programs. The proposed algorithm is implemented on an IEEE 33‐bus test distribution system, with four different cases investigated.

Abstract:Contemporary distributions are now going to underground their overhead distribution lines due to techno-social reasons. Reliability and loss reduction are the two prime objectives for distribution system operation. Since failure rates of ungrounded cables are the function of Joules heating besides their physical lengths, the reliability evaluation of undergrounded distribution systems needs to be reviewed. This paper suggested a suitable modification in existing reliability indices in order to make them more appropriate for underground distribution systems. A multi-objective network reconfiguration problem is formulated to enhance the reliability and performance of distribution systems while duly addressing the variability and uncertainty in load demand and power generation from renewables. The application results on a standard test bench shift the paradigm of the well-known conflicting nature of reliability and network performance indices defined for overhead distribution systems.

Abstract:The peak-load management of a distribution network (DN) has gained attention by increasing the electric power consumption on the demand side. By developing smart-grid infrastructures, effective utilization of the DN's components and proper management of the DN would create a valuable solution for DN operators. Hence, in this paper, a peak-load management framework is proposed in which the real-time rating of the components and voltage-dependent features of the electric loads help the DN operator handle the peak times successfully. In addition to the individual advantages of efficient operation of the DN, more practical results are obtained by combining the conservation voltage reduction (CVR) and dynamic thermal rating (DTR) of the DN's lines and transformers. Based on the obtained results, compared to the individual implementation of CVR, the cost-saving level is increased significantly during the peak events using the simultaneous utilization of DTR and CVR. Furthermore, a discussion is presented about the current problems of the feeders supplying the voltage-dependent constant-power loads during CVR utilization, which is resolved by the dynamic rating of the DN's components.

Abstract:This paper proposes a novel approach to assess network conditions, enabling timely decisions to be made regarding protective actions or control adjustments for distributed generators (DGs) instead of immediate disconnection upon detecting an unplanned islanding event. By facilitating swift decision-making, this strategy aims to minimize outage durations, enhance system reliability, and improve customer satisfaction levels. The first step in the proposed approach involves the implementation of a passive islanding detection method based on continuous monitoring of voltage and current phasors at DG buses equipped by micro-phasor measurement units (μPMUs). Subsequently, a faulted line detection algorithm is applied to identify if the fault lies within the isolated area. If the fault determined to be within the separated region, the DG disconnects from the grid, providing power solely to its local load. In contrast, if the fault is located outside the isolated area or if islanding occurs due to reasons other than faults, the DGs control strategies are adjusted to support the islanded conditions effectively. The performance of the proposed procedure is thoroughly analyzed through the integration of MATLAB and DIgSILENT simulation environments. The IEEE 33-bus and IEEE 69-bus test systems with both synchronous-based and inverter-based DGs are used for the assessment.

Abstract:Peak load shaving and load balancing are of great significance to reduce distribution network loss and improve resource utilization. Given this background, an optimization strategy for distribution network reconfiguration based on Markov chain Monte Carlo method is proposed. In this strategy, a load characteristic curve clustering method considering DBI index is proposed to obtain the typical load curves of each public transformer and special transformer user under low voltage distribution line based on the historical load curves. Then, an optimization model for distribution network reconfiguration based on Markov chain Monte Carlo method is proposed to minimize the average peak–valley difference of the distribution line, and the line connection modification scheme is obtained. Finally, case studies on two 10 kV distribution lines in Zhejiang province are performed for verifying the effectiveness of the proposed model. The results show that the proposed method can improve the line load rate and realize the peak load shaving and valley load filling of line load, which provides a reference for distribution network reconfiguration.

Abstract:Voltage instability, power imbalance, and unreliability are all caused by power interruptions and losses in the distribution system. The optimal reconfiguration of the distribution network is offered in this research as a solution to such challenges. The investigation is carried out using an actual distribution system in Kombolcha, Ethiopia. Modified shark smell optimization (MSSO) is used in the MATLAB environment to improve system reliability and voltage profile with low power loss. Tie switches are optimally placed to reduce power losses, total cost of outages, and reliability indices such as the system average interruption frequency index (SAIFI), system average interruption duration index (SAIDI), and expected energy not supply (EENS) all at the same time. The MSSO's effectiveness is demonstrated through a comparison with other approaches. Furthermore, a real-time digital simulator is used to implement the suggested task in real time with allowable mistakes in the results (RTDS).

Abstract:Due to increasing in natural disasters in the recent years, the issue of distribution network resilience has become highly important. Microgrids with different types of distributed energy resources have the capabilities to improve distribution network resilience under extreme events. In this paper, we present a mixed-integer linear program to restore prioritized loads while satisfying topology and operational constraints. In the presented model, we study dynamic microgrid formation and optimal management of various smart grid technologies such as distributed generations, demand response programs, wind turbines and energy storage units. We also investigate the significant impact of renewable energy resources, loads and their uncertainty on distribution system resilience. In addition, we determine the required emergency budgets of operation to restore a distribution system from extreme events. We also intend to examine the effects of demand response programs on improving the distribution system performance in the recovery period. Finally, we verify the effectiveness of the presented model on a modified IEEE 33-node test system and a real distribution system.

Abstract:The transformation of passive distribution systems to more active ones thanks to the increased penetration of distributed energy resources, such as dispersed generators, flexible demand, distributed storage, and electric vehicles, creates the necessity of an enhanced test system for distribution systems planning and operation studies. The value of the proposed test system, is that it provides an appropriate and comprehensive benchmark for future researches concerning distribution systems. The proposed test system is developed by modifying and updating the well-known 33 bus distribution system from Baran & Wu. It comprises both forms of balanced and unbalanced three-phase power systems, including new details on the integration of distributed and renewable generation units, reactive power compensation assets, reconfiguration infrastructures and appropriate datasets of load and renewable generation profiles for different case studies.

Abstract:Future electrical grids, particularly the distribution networks, may face more severe voltage rises/drops, and in general, more power quality problems in the presence of new loads such as electric vehicle chargers and renewable energy generation units like photovoltaic systems. This necessitates investing in additional high-cost infrastructure to increase the capability of the feeder in hosting higher levels of loads and generation units while the existing capacity is not utilized effectively. In the stated condition, effective voltage stabilization strategies in electrical distribution networks can contribute to hosting capacity improvement and the better utilization of the existing infrastructure. Accordingly, in this paper, the application of Open-UPQC in voltage profile improvement and hosting capacity enhancement is evaluated in low-voltage distribution networks. Furthermore, a dynamic reference voltage adjustment strategy is applied to the device to improve its capabilities in power quality improvement and hosting capacity enhancement. Simulation studies have been implemented to evaluate the capability of Open-UPQC either with static reference voltage or the dynamically-adjusted one in low-voltage networks with real measured data while different cases are assessed regarding the topology and the length of the feeder. The simulation results approved the capability of Open-UPQC especially with the dynamic reference voltage in hosting capacity enhancement while providing the highest level of voltage profile improvement among all the assessed custom power devices in the studied low-voltage networks.
