Abstract:Combustion instability is still a main challenge in developing advanced gas turbine combustors. It is essential to conduct instability control once it occurs. In this paper, liquid fuel modulation by a high-speed on/off valve is used to control flame oscillation generated by loudspeakers. Spray swirling flame dynamic under the combined modulation of air and fuel is experimentally studied. Flame dynamical characteristics and coherent structures at different excitation phase delays are discussed with nonlinear time-series analysis and proper orthogonal decomposition method. Experimental results show flame heat release rate fluctuation is decreased by 86% at 40 degrees while flame instability is intensively enhanced at 220 degrees. Phase portraits and recurrence plots show the flame is in a chaotic oscillation with low amplitude aperiodic oscillations at 40 degrees while it suffers from the largest fluctuation at 220 degrees. Difference in flame dynamic is caused by the destructive (out of phase) and constructive (in phase) interference of heat release rate fluctuations induced by air excitation and fuel modulation. Flame returns back to its nature dynamical behavior under out-of-phase modulation. Longitudinal modes of the spray flame are enhanced while the spiral modes are inhibited under in-phase modulation.

Abstract:Compared with the quasi-steady combustion process, the large pressure oscillation in the combustion unstable process contains rich physical characteristics and more severe structural damage phenomenon. The active control method is more flexible and efficient by controlling some parameters of the combustion system through the actuator, so as to destroy the coupling between heat release oscillation and acoustic disturbance. However, the existing active control method is limited by the lack of model and actuator frequency, which has limitations on the control ability of the unsteady process. In this paper, a low-frequency actuator is used to stimulate the fuel injection system of the rear step combustors, and the time series of the experimental pressure measurement of the combustors is analyzed qualitatively. It is found that the periodic excitation signal will trigger the modal conversion of the frequency and amplitude of the combustors, which makes the intermittent state of the system appear obviously in advance or lag phenomenon. Through the analysis of the pressure sequence recursion diagram, it is considered that the low frequency actuator excited by the high frequency periodic signal has an effect on the combustion state transition of the combustor.

Abstract:Critical slowing down phenomena occur during the transition process of various dynamical states, such as bifurcations. The eigenvalues of dynamical systems can be regarded as an indicator of critical slowing down of impending bifurcation. Adaptive, locally linear models can extract local eigenvalues of the nonlinear dynamical system by segmenting a full-time series into multi-windows, and eigenvalue spectrum analysis is based on the eigenvalues. The state transition between different combustion states occurs through bifurcation processes. In this paper, we investigate critical slowing down in the bifurcation process of backward-facing step combustor. We performed a series of experiments by fixing the air mass flow and varying the fuel mass flow from the lean blowout condition to a thermoacoustic instability condition with a quasi-steady change, and the combustion state varying versus the change of the operation conditions exhibit a quasi-Hopf bifurcation process. The measured pressure fluctuations were treated by the local linear model to analyse the eigenvalue spectrum. The real parts of the eigenvalues approximate zero gradually when the equivalence ratio increases, and this tendency corresponds to the critical slowing down. Furthermore, the commonly used early warning signals were also used to support the analysis results of the eigenvalue spectrum.
Combustion Instability Detection Based on Multi-Signal Information Fusion for an Industrial Gas Turbine Combustor

Abstract:Combustion instability is a major challenge for low emission combustors. It is caused by the coupling between the combustor acoustic modes and heat release fluctuations. Early detection of combustion instability is very important for the safety and reliability of gas turbines. In this work, high-pressure and high-temperature experiments were conducted to investigate the thermoacoustic features of an industrial-scale combustor. The combustor contains a pilot burner and a main burner, which adopt diffusion and premixed combustion, respectively. The transition processes of thermoacoustic state from stable to unstable are experimentally studied for different operating pressures. Recurrence quantification analysis (RQA) is used to study the nonlinear dynamics of the dynamic pressure (DP) and acceleration (ACC) signals obtained during the experiments. Based on multi-signal information fusion of DP and ACC, an early detection method of combustion instability is proposed via a machine learning method. The proposed method combines the dynamic behaviors of DP and ACC signals into a two-dimensional map. A support vector machine (SVM) model is used to classify the thermoacoustic states of the combustor. Four cases are used to train the SVM model, while two additional cases are applied to assess the robustness of the SVM-based precursor. Compared to the conventional method based on the root-mean-square (RMS) of the DP signals, the SVM-based precursor achieves an overall accuracy of the early detection of combustion instability in the combustor.

Abstract:We present results from a three-dimensional (3D) direct numerical simulation (DNS) of a spatially developing n-dodecane round jet flame. The thermochemical conditions (i.e. pressure, temperature and oxidiser composition) correspond to those of Spray A, an experimental target flame of the Engine Combustion Network (ECN). To make the DNS computationally tractable, we consider a gas jet with a reduced Reynolds number of 17,000 and a shorter lifted length of 11 times the jet diameter. The flame structure and stabilisation mechanism of the statistically steady jet flame are discussed. Overall the flame structure is similar to that identified from experimental observations, i.e. a region of high formaldehyde (CH2O) concentration, which marks the low-temperature chemistry (LTC), is present upstream of the main flame and persists downstream in the central region of the jet where the mixture is rich. A high-temperature (HTC) nonpremixed flame marked by OH radicals shrouds the jet. Ignition kernels are observed upstream of the flame base, some of which are convected downstream and join with the main flame. At the flame base, a three-branch structure is observed, namely an LTC branch upstream of the flame, a rich HTC branch attached to the flame base and a trailing nonpremixed flame anchored at the stoichiometric mixture fraction. A detailed analysis of the flame stabilisation mechanism is reported, employing structural comparisons to two-dimensional (2D) reference cases, transport budgets, and flame speeds. It is concluded from these analyses that the flame is stabilised principally by flame propagation. The role of autoignition kernels is also analysed and found to be secondary.

Abstract:The transition from the low-amplitude, aperiodic fluctuation to thermoacoustic instability is usually treated as a Hopf bifurcation, but the transition incorporates complex dynamical behaviors. Intermittent oscillations commonly occur in the transition process wherein chaotic states alternate with limit cycle oscillations and both the chaotic state and the limit cycle oscillation last with no fixed period. Intermittent oscillations that occur in the thermoacoustic system are demonstrated to be deterministic. A Koopman linearization procedure is implemented to model the intermittent combustion oscillations in the backward-facing step combustor. The nonlinear dynamics of intermittent combustion oscillations are approximated as a forced linear system in an orthogonal space, which is constructed by singular value decomposition of a delay coordinates matrix. The phase space of an intermittent combustion oscillation can be divided into linear and nonlinear regions by the magnitude of the nonlinear term in the forced linear system. As a result, intermittent combustion oscillations can be described as the transition between chaotic states and limit cycle oscillations, and the transition occurs when the nonlinear term is large.

Abstract:This study mainly investigates the flame and flow characteristics under combustion instability in a centrally-staged swirl spray combustor, using 5 kHz CH* chemiluminescence (CL) and 15 Hz particle image velocimetry (PIV). The inlet air total temperature and total pressure are up to 600 K and 1 MPa, respectively. A dynamic pressure sensor with an acquisition frequency of 20 kHz is located downstream of the combustor casing. The pressure signal shows large-amplitude limit cycle oscillations when the fuel split ratio of the pilot stage decrease. The phase-averaged CH* CL images indicate that the periodic ignition/extinction of the main stage flame triggers combustion instability. A proper orthogonal decomposition (POD) analysis based on the reacting flow field further explains this phenomenon. The first two POD modes containing three coherent vortex pairs are associated with the extinction and ignition of the main stage flame, respectively. The vortex pairs located at the central shear layer (CSL) generated by Kelvin-Helmholtz (K-H) instability affect the primary recirculation zone (PRZ). The change in the size of the PRZ influences the main stage flame dynamics. In a cycle of oscillation, ignition happens when the size of PRZ increases and the coupling between the main and pilot stages enhances. Extinction takes place when the opposite happens. The flow-flame interaction mechanism demonstrated in this study provides strong experimental support for understanding combustion instability in aero-engine combustors.

Abstract:Three-dimensional n-heptane spray flames in a model swirl combustor are investigated by means of direct numerical simulation to provide insight into spray evaporation and combustion in realistic combustors. The variable-density, low-Mach number Navier-Stokes equations are solved using a fully conservative finite difference scheme in cylindrical coordinates. Dispersed droplets are tracked in the Lagrangian framework. The droplet evaporation process is described by an equilibrium model and the vapor combustion is modeled using an adaptive one-step reaction. The results show that the vortex and flame structures are quite complex. The effect of different parameters, including the equivalence ratio, co- or counter-swirling, and inflow conditions are analyzed and are found to influence the fluid dynamics and flame structures. It is also found that the spray combustion is characterized by lean premixed, rich premixed, and diffusion flames, and stabilized by different mechanisms in this geometry. Furthermore, premixed flames are found to contribute more than diffusion flames to the total heat release rate, though their appearance seems to be less. Direct numerical simulation of three-dimensional swirling n-heptane spray flames

Abstract:Spray combustion is encountered in many engineering applications, such as internal combustion engines and gas-turbine aircraft engines. In these systems, the concurrent processes of liquid atomization, droplet evaporation, turbulent dispersion, and combustion interact and strongly affect each other, which makes experimental measurement and high-fidelity simulation challenging. To understand these multi-physics phenomena and their strong coupling interactions, methodology of direct numerical simulation (DNS) is helpful. DNS has been proven to be a powerful tool for exploring fundamentals of single-phase turbulent flows (Moin & Mahesh 1998) and turbulent combustion (Vervisch & Poinsot 1998). Recently, DNS has been applied to study spray combustion (Reveillon & Vervisch 2005; Domingo et al. 2005; Watanabe et al. 2008). Peraa & Reveillon (2007) further applied a two-dimensional compressible solver to explore the spray flame/acoustic interactions. However, all these studies are limited to two-dimensional and simple configurations. Large eddy simulation (LES) has also been extended to study spray combustion of realistic applications (Moin & Apte 2006; Patela et al. 2007). Although consistent results with experimental data have been achieved, using models of gaseous combustion to describe spray flames leads to some modeling issues, as discussed by Baba & Kurose (2008). For example, this approach suggests that combustion can be accurately modeled independent of spray evaporation. However, the combustion process is intricately coupled with the spray evaporation, and combustion models should correctly reflect these interactions. The present study is motivated by the above background. To gain a better understanding of three-dimensional spray flame behavior, as well as evaporation-combustion interactions in a more realistic configuration, direct numerical simulations of n-heptane spray flames in a model swirling combustor have been conducted. The simulations are performed to approach realistic spray combustion as much as possible. Potential insights into swirling spray combustion are presented, and relevant modeling issues are discussed.

Dispersed droplets are tracked in a Lagrangian framework. Droplet evaporation is described by an equilibrium model. Gas combustion is represented using an adaptive one-step irreversible reaction. Two different cases are studied: a lean case that resembles a lean direct injection combustion, and a rich case that represents the primary combustion region of a rich-burn/quick-quench/lean-burn combustor. The results suggest that premixed combustion contribute more than 70% to the total heat release rate, although diffusion flame have volumetrically a higher contribution. The conditional mean scalar dissipation rate is shown to be strongly influenced, especially in the rich case. The conditional mean evaporation rate increases almost linearly with mixture fraction in the lean case, but shows a more complex behavior in the rich case. The probability density functions (PDF) of mixture fraction in spray combustion are shown to be quite complex. To model this behavior, the formulation of the PDF in a transformed mixture fraction space is proposed and demonstrated to predict the DNS data reasonably well.

Abstract:Centrally-staged combustors, characterized by a center pilot flame surrounded by an annual main stage flame, are widely used in modern aeroengines to achieve low NO x emissions. However, due to the premixed combustion of the main stage, centrally-staged combustors are prone to combustion instability. This paper experimentally investigates the bifurcation behaviors and nonlinear dynamics of combustion instabilities in a centrally-staged swirl-stabilized combustor fueled by aviation kerosene fuel. The current study reveals that the swirling flame transitions from a stable state to a limit-cycle oscillation state either by increasing the overall equivalence ratio of the dome or by decreasing the fuel split ratio. This transition manifests as a supercritical Hopf bifurcation and is essentially governed by the main stage equivalence ratio. Synchronization between pressure and heat release rate fluctuations is found to occur when the main stage equivalence ratio surpasses a threshold, resulting in large-amplitude oscillations and ultra-harmonics that stem from nonlinear interactions. Bispectral mode decomposition is further employed to elucidate the nonlinear triadic interactions of the thermoacoustic system, successfully revealing the interaction routes among different modes. This analysis indicates that the triadic mode interactions predominately occur in the main flame region, while the pilot flame region is insignificant as long as the oscillation amplitude remains low. These findings provide a deeper understanding of the combustion instability in stratified swirling flames in general and contribute to the development of better strategies for controlling combustion instability in centrally-staged combustors in particular.

Abstract:International Journal of Spray and Combustion Dynamics, Ahead of Print. We experimentally study the transition from a state of combustion noise to azimuthal thermoacoustic instability in a laboratory-scale turbulent annular combustor. This combustor has sixteen swirl-stabilized burners to facilitate continuous and spatially distributed combustion along the annular region. Our approach involves simultaneous measurement of CH* chemiluminescence emission of the flame using two high-speed cameras and the acoustic pressure fluctuations using eight piezoelectric pressure transducers mounted on the backplane of combustor. We observe that the transition from combustion noise to azimuthal instability occurs through mode shifting, where the system switches from a longitudinal mode to an azimuthal mode as the equivalence ratio is decreased. Throughout this progression, the combustor exhibits various dynamical behaviors, including intermittency, dual-mode instability, standing azimuthal instability, and beating azimuthal instability. These dynamical states are determined from the acquired pressure signals by decomposing the acoustic pressure fluctuations into clockwise (CW) and counterclockwise (CCW) waves, enabling a reconstruction of the amplitude of acoustic pressure fluctuations, nature angle, (anti-)nodal line location, and spin ratio. The global heat release response is then examined during various dynamical states, contrasting their behavior at different non-dimensional time steps by phase-averaging the fluctuations of the heat release rate over the acoustic pressure cycle. Distinctive flame behaviors were observed based on the direction of pressure wave propagation, showcasing characteristic CCW spinning, standing, and CW spinning heat release patterns. Moreover, our examination of relative phase distributions during various dynamical states, computed by analyzing the phase of heat release rate fluctuations across all burners with respect to one burner, reveals the emergence of diverse patterns in the interaction of neighboring flames influenced by acoustic field.

Abstract:Large eddy simulations (LES) of self-excited spray combustion instability in an aero-engine combustor are performed to investigate the mechanisms of combustion instability. Three spray flames with different droplet diameters and wall boundary conditions are trigged to be unstable explicitly. The dominant oscillation frequencies are around 1437 Hz, 1314 Hz and 1200 Hz in the three cases, respectively. The pressure and heat release rate oscillate with the same frequency and phase, which shows that the combustion instability is mainly caused by thermo-acoustic interaction. In the spray combustion instability process, flame surfaces collapse and merge with the adjacent flame surfaces to form burning pockets. The dominant mechanisms that drive the spray combustion instability are attributed to the formation and annihilation of burning pockets. The oscillation amplitudes are affected by the initial droplet diameter and wall boundary condition. When the initial averaged droplet diameter increases from 15 μm to 20 μm or the cooling air is removed from the combustor, the oscillation amplitudes decrease. These results give new insights into more complex mechanisms and influencing factors of self-excited spray combustion instability.

Abstract:An experimental and numerical investigation of self-excited transverse combustion instabilities in a rectangular multi-injector, gaseous methane-oxygen rocket model combustor is presented. Numerical simulations based on flamelet-generated manifold and stress-blended eddy simulation are performed to reveal the dynamic features of the instabilities. Good agreement is achieved between numerical results and experimental data in the aspect of mean chamber pressure, characteristic frequency, and pressure waveforms. The nonlinear growth process (stable-rapid development-limit cycle) is clearly captured during the experiment, which is successfully predicted by numerical simulation. Nonlinear characteristics are analyzed via the phase space reconstruction method, and instantaneous flow fields are estimated to aid the interpretation of the combustion instability mechanisms. Results suggest that the linear characteristics dominate the initial growth stage of pressure oscillations. The nonlinear nature is significantly strengthened during the rapid exponential development process, indicated by the generation of harmonics. Both numerical and experimental phase space attractors vary from clutter to "Reuleaux triangle shaped" and ultimately to stretched trefoil-knot like structure, corresponding to the nonlinear growth process of combustion instabilities. The trefoil-knot like attractor is caused by the steep pressure wavefront (shock-like). Flow field analysis demonstrates that the gaseous propellants are highly disturbed by the transversely moving pressure wave. Large coherent structures of flame interactions and propellant gas stream collisions between adjacent injectors are generated, resulting in high deflection of propellants and heat release regions to both sides of the chamber. Coupling behavior of pressure oscillations between the main chamber and the oxidizer post (oxidizer manifold) is captured. Abstract:Combustion instability due to thermo-acoustic interactions is a critical combustion problem that requires a thorough understanding because of its adverse impact on stable and reliable operation of combustors in high-speed propulsion devices like gas turbines and rockets. This work conducts computational investigations of the coupling between the transient flame dynamics such as the ignition delay and local extinction and the thermo-acoustic instability developed in a self-excited resonance combustor to gain deep insights into the mechanisms of thermo-acoustic instability. A 2D modelling framework that employs different flamelet models (the steady flamelet model and the flamelet/progress variable approach) is developed to enable the examination of the effect of the transient flame dynamics caused by the strong coupling of the turbulent mixing and finite-rate chemical kinetics on the occurrence of thermo-acoustic instability. The models are validated by using the available experimental data for the pressure signal. Parametric studies are performed to examine the effect of the occurrence of the transient flame dynamics, the effect of artificial amplification of the Damköhler number, and the effect of neglecting mixture fraction fluctuations on the predictions of the thermo-acoustic instability. The parametric studies reveal that the occurrence of transient flame dynamics has a strong influence on the onset of the thermo-acoustic instability. Further analysis is then conducted to localise the effect of a particular flame dynamic event, the ignition delay, on the thermo-acoustic instability. The reverse effect of the occurrence of the thermo-acoustic instability on the transient flame dynamics in the combustor is also investigated by examining the temporal evolution of the local flame events in conjunction with the pressure wave propagation. The above observed two-way coupling between the transient flame dynamics (the ignition delay) and the thermo-acoustic instability provides a plausible mechanism of the self-excited and sustained thermo-acoustic instability observed in the combustor despite the fact that the results are obtained from 2D simulations. The same analysis is expected to be extensible to fully 3D simulations.

Abstract:In turbulent combustors, the transition from stable combustion (i.e. combustion noise) to thermoacoustic instability occurs via intermittency. During stable combustion, the acoustic power production happens in a spatially incoherent manner. In contrast, during thermoacoustic instability, the acoustic power production happens in a spatially coherent manner. In the present study, we investigate the spatiotemporal dynamics of acoustic power sources during the intermittency route to thermoacoustic instability using complex network theory. To that end, we perform simultaneous acoustic pressure measurement, high-speed chemiluminescence imaging and particle image velocimetry in a backward-facing step combustor with a bluff body stabilized flame at different equivalence ratios. We examine the spatiotemporal dynamics of acoustic power sources by constructing time-varying spatial networks during the different dynamical states of combustor operation. We show that as the turbulent combustor transits from combustion noise to thermoacoustic instability via intermittency, small fragments of acoustic power sources, observed during combustion noise, nucleate, coalesce and grow in size to form large clusters at the onset of thermoacoustic instability. This nucleation, coalescence and growth of small clusters of acoustic power sources occurs during the growth of pressure oscillations during intermittency. In contrast, during the decay of pressure oscillations during intermittency, these large clusters of acoustic power sources disintegrate into small ones. We use network measures such as the link density, the number of components and the size of the largest component to quantify the spatiotemporal dynamics of acoustic power sources as the turbulent combustor transits from combustion noise to thermoacoustic instability via intermittency.

Combustion Dynamics of Ten-injector Rocket Engine Using Flamelet Progress Variable

Abstract:The combustion instability is investigated computationally for a ten-injector rocket engine using the compressible flamelet progress variable (FPV) model and detached eddy simulation (DES). An C++ code is developed based on OpenFOAM 4.1 to apply the combustion model. Flamelet tables are generated for methane/oxygen combustion at the background pressure of 200 bar using a 12-species chemical mechanism. The flames at this high pressure level are found having similar structures as those at much lower pressures. A power law is determined to rescale the reaction rate for the progress variable to address the pressure effect. The combustion is also simulated by the one-step-kinetics (OSK) model for comparison with the FPV model. Premixed and diffusion flames are identified locally for both the FPV and OSK models. Study of combustion instability shows that a combined first longitudinal and first tangential mode of 3200 Hz is dominant for the FPV model while the OSK model favors a pure first tangential mode of 2600 Hz. The coupling among pressure oscillation, unsteady transverse flow and helicity fluctuation is discussed. A preliminary study of the resonance in the injectors, which is driven by the acoustic oscillation in the combustion chamber, is also presented.

Abstract:Combustion instability is one of the most plaguing challenges for general industrial thermal facilities, such as furnaces, gas turbine and hot air heaters. Considerable researches have been reported on developing effective active control means to mitigate combustion instability. The quick and accurate prediction of oscillating combustion characteristics is the premise of developing an active control model. In the present work, neural network models are constructed to predict temperature and key radical evolutions with historical data and system parameters as inputs. Active subspace (AS) method is adopted to identify the important direction of the system-parameter space in neural network, reduce the number of neurons in the input and middle layers, and simplify the network structure. Results show that the system-parameter space of eight dimensions can be reduced to a one-dimensional space using AS method. The neural network structures are greatly simplified, and the numbers of neurons are significantly reduced by 50%, which shortens the training time by 72%, and reduces single-step prediction time in hardware system by 60%. Compared with the neural network with full system parameters, the neural network with reduced parameters by AS method can capture the oscillating combustion characteristics and accurately predict the temperature evolution and mass fraction of radical H and CH.

Abstract:Complex-network theory has attracted considerable attention for nearly a decade, and it enables us to encompass our understanding of nonlinear dynamics in complex systems in a wide range of fields, including applied physics and mechanical, chemical, and electrical engineering. We conduct an experimental study using a pragmatic online detection methodology based on complex-network theory to prevent a limiting unstable state such as blowout in a confined turbulent combustion system. This study introduces a modified version of the natural visibility algorithm based on the idea of a visibility limit to serve as a pragmatic online detector. The average degree of the modified version of the natural visibility graph allows us to detect the onset of blowout, resulting in online prevention.

Abstract:The numerical calculation models for fluid injection are established in the paper. The spray is divided into two regions: a main jet region and a mixing flow region,described by K\|H(Kelvin\|Helmgoltz) instability and R\|T(Rayleigh\|Taylor) instability respectively, the radius of droplets separated due to breakup are determined according to wavelength of instability, so the mathematical model of fluid droplet breakup is established. The process of spray in a typical combustion chamber is simulated. The 3D\|pictures of fluid droplets position and isoconcentration at some typical sections are shown.
