Abstract:Movement errors are used to continuously recalibrate the sensorimotor map, a process known as sensorimotor adaptation. Here we examined how attention influences this automatic and obligatory learning process. Focusing first on spatial attention, we compared conditions in which the visual feedback that provided information about the movement outcome was either attended or unattended. Surprisingly, this manipulation had no effect on the rate of adaptation. We next used a dual-task methodology to examine the influence of attentional resources on adaptation. Here, again, we found no effect of attention, with the rate of adaptation similar under focused or divided attention conditions. Interestingly, we found that attention modulates adaptation in an indirect manner: Attended stimuli serve as cues that define the context for learning. The rate of adaptation was significantly attenuated when the attended stimulus changed from the end of one trial to the start of the next trial. In contrast, similar changes to unattended stimuli had no impact on adaptation. Together, these results suggest that visual attention defines the cues that establish the context for sensorimotor learning.

Abstract:Adaptation is the process by which we adjust internal models of the body, world, and mind in response to sensory feedback. While adaptation is studied extensively in the context of motor control, there is limited evidence that cognitive functions such as working memory are subject to the same error-driven adaptive control mechanism. To examine the possibility that internal spatial representations undergo adaptation, we had participants perform a task that interleaved a perceptual discrimination task and a spatial working memory task. Perceptual discrimination trials (85% of trials) presented an initial peripheral cue to exogenously capture attention, immediately followed by a displaced target stimulus. This sequence of events served to repeatedly induce a covert attentional allocation error. Interleaved spatial working memory trials (15% of trials) presented a stimulus at a pseudorandom peripheral location followed by a delay interval. On half of the working memory trials, the stimulus was surreptitiously presented at the same location as the initial attentional cue. We found that as attentional errors accumulated over the course of the experiment, participants' spatial recall shifted to counteract the attentional error. The magnitude of this shift was proportional to the number of induced errors. Recall performance rapidly recovered following the offset of error trials. Multiple control experiments ruled out alternative explanations for these results, such as oculomotor confounds and attentional biases unrelated to error. These findings indicate that the computational mechanisms governing the adaptation of motor commands appear to similarly serve to adjust and calibrate spatial cognition.

Memories of Motor Adaptation Do Not Necessarily Decay with Behavioral Unlearning.

Abstract:Motor adaptation reshapes behaviors to habituate novel predictable demands caused by dramatic changes in our body (or environment). In the absence of error signals, behaviors rapidly return to the manner before adaptation. It is still in debate whether this behavioral unlearning is due to memory decay. Recent studies suggested that unlearning may be related to the detection of a context change between adaptation phase and error-absent phase. This context-dependent idea is extended in the present study, which examined the motor adaptation in a ball-tossing task. To facilitate the manipulation of the task and the measurement of the behavior, this tossing task was conducted in a virtual environment. Experiment 1 found that unlearning was more likely to occur when the context in the adaptation phase was less similar to that in the error-absent phase. Experiment 2 further demonstrated that the memory of motor adaptation can bias behavior even after behavioral unlearning. Experiment 3 confirmed that the results in Experiment 1 and 2 were not artifacts. These findings indicate that memories of adaptation are independent of behavioral unlearning, and the contextual similarity between adaptation and error-absent phase determines the unlearning rate.
Perturbation Variability Does Not Influence Implicit Sensorimotor Adaptation

Abstract:Implicit adaptation has been regarded as a rigid process that automatically operates in response to movement errors to keep the sensorimotor system precisely calibrated. This hypothesis has been challenged by recent evidence suggesting flexibility in this learning process. One compelling line of evidence comes from work suggesting that this form of learning is context-dependent, with the rate of learning modulated by error history. Specifically, learning was attenuated in the presence of perturbations exhibiting high variance compared to when the perturbation is fixed. However, these findings are confounded by the fact that the adaptation system corrects for errors of different magnitudes in a non-linear manner, with the adaptive response increasing in a proportional manner to small errors and saturating to large errors. Through simulations, we show that this non-linear motor correction function is sufficient to explain the effect of perturbation variance without referring to an experience-dependent change in error sensitivity. Moreover, by controlling the distribution of errors experienced during training, we provide empirical evidence showing that there is no measurable effect of perturbation variance on implicit adaptation. As such, we argue that the evidence to date remains consistent with the rigidity assumption. An ideal learner should be sensitive to the statistics of the environment and adjust their behavior accordingly. For example, the rate of learning in response to a change in the environment is faster when the environment is relatively predictable (low uncertainty) compared to when it is unpredictable (high uncertainty). Here we look at this phenomenon in the context of sensorimotor adaptation, the automatic and implicit process that keeps the sensorimotor system precisely calibrated. The results show that this system is surprisingly rigid, with no modulation of the learning rate in response to changes in the variability of the environment. We propose that, whereas processes associated with the action selection system are flexible and modified based on context, the adaptation system is engineered to ensure that the selected action is properly executed, regardless of the optimality of that action. This insensitivity to context may serve to minimize interference with the more flexible processes involved in action selection.

Abstract:Given that informative and relevant feedback in the real world is often intertwined with distracting and irrelevant feedback, we asked how the relevancy of visual feedback impacts implicit sensorimotor adaptation. To tackle this question, we presented multiple cursors as visual feedback in a center-out reaching task and varied the task relevance of these cursors. In other words, participants were instructed to hit a target with a specific task-relevant cursor, while ignoring the other cursors. In Experiment 1, we found that reach aftereffects were attenuated by the mere presence of distracting cursors, compared to reach aftereffects in response to a single task-relevant cursor. The degree of attenuation did not depend on the position of the distracting cursors. In Experiment 2, we examined the interaction between task relevance and attention. Participants were asked to adapt to a task-relevant cursor/target pair, while ignoring the task-irrelevant cursor/target pair. Critically, we jittered the location of the relevant and irrelevant target in an uncorrelated manner, allowing us to index attention via how well participants tracked the position of target. We found that participants who were better at tracking the task-relevant target/cursor pair showed greater aftereffects, and interestingly, the same correlation applied to the task-irrelevant target/cursor pair. Together, these results highlight a novel role of task relevancy on modulating implicit adaptation, perhaps by giving greater attention to informative sources of feedback, increasing the saliency of the sensory prediction error.

Abstract:The sensorimotor system can recalibrate itself without our conscious awareness, a type of procedural learning whose computational mechanism remains undefined. Recent findings on implicit motor adaptation, such as over-learning from small perturbations and fast saturation for increasing perturbation size, challenge existing theories based on sensory errors. We argue that perceptual error, arising from the optimal combination of movement-related cues, is the primary driver of implicit adaptation. Central to our theory is the increasing sensory uncertainty of visual cues with increasing perturbations, which was validated through perceptual psychophysics (Experiment 1). Our theory predicts the learning dynamics of implicit adaptation across a spectrum of perturbation sizes on a trial-by-trial basis (Experiment 2). It explains proprioception changes and their relation to visual perturbation (Experiment 3). By modulating visual uncertainty in perturbation, we induced unique adaptation responses in line with our model predictions (Experiment 4). Overall, our perceptual error framework outperforms existing models based on sensory errors, suggesting that perceptual error in locating one’s effector, supported by Bayesian cue integration, underpins the sensorimotor system’s implicit adaptation.

Abstract:Implicit learning about where a visual search target is likely to appear often speeds up search. However, whether implicit learning guides spatial attention or affects postsearch decisional processes remains controversial. Using eye tracking, this study provides compelling evidence that implicit learning guides attention. In a training phase, participants often found the target in a high-frequency, "rich" quadrant of the display. When subsequently tested in a phase during which the target was randomly located, participants were twice as likely to direct the first saccadic eye movement to the previously rich quadrant than to any of the sparse quadrants. The attentional bias persisted for nearly 200 trials after training and was unabated by explicit instructions to distribute attention evenly. We propose that implicit learning guides spatial attention but in a qualitatively different manner than goal-driven attention.

Abstract:Abstract Motor learning in visuomotor adaptation tasks results from both explicit and implicit processes, each responding differently to an error signal. While the motor output side of these processes is extensively studied, their visual input side is relatively unknown. We investigated if and how depth perception affects the computation of error information by explicit and implicit motor learning. Two groups of participants threw virtual darts at a virtual dartboard while receiving perturbed endpoint feedback. The Delayed group was allowed to re-aim and their feedback was delayed to emphasize explicit learning, while the Clamped group received clamped cursor feedback which they were told to ignore, and continued to aim straight at the target to emphasize implicit adaptation. Both groups played this game in a highly detailed virtual environment (Depth condition) and in an empty environment (No-Depth condition). The Delayed group showed an increase in error sensitivity under Depth relative to No-Depth conditions. In contrast, the Clamped group adapted to the same degree under both conditions. The movement kinematics of the Delayed participants also changed under the Depth condition, consistent with the target appearing more distant, unlike the Clamped group. A comparison of the Delayed behavioral data with a perceptual task from the same individuals showed that the effect of the Depth condition on the re-aiming direction was consistent with an increase in the scaling of the error distance and size. These findings suggest that explicit and implicit learning processes may rely on different sources of perceptual information. New & Noteworthy We leveraged a classic sensorimotor adaptation task to perform a first systematic assessment of the role of perceptual cues in the estimation of an error signal in the 3D space during motor learning. We crossed two conditions presenting different amounts of depth information, with two manipulations emphasizing explicit and implicit learning processes. Explicit learning responded to the visual conditions, consistent with perceptual reports, while implicit learning appeared to be independent of them.
Sensorimotor Knowledge From Task-Irrelevant Feedback Contributes To Motor Learning

Abstract:Exposure to task-irrelevant feedback leads to perceptual learning, but its effect on motor learning has been understudied. Here, we asked human participants to reach a visual target with a hand-controlled cursor while observing another cursor moving independently in a different direction. Although the task-irrelevant feedback did not change the main task's performance, it elicited robust savings in subsequent adaptation to classical visuomotor rotation perturbation. We demonstrated that the saving effect resulted from a faster formation of strategic learning through a series of experiments, not from gains in the implicit learning process. Furthermore, the saving effect was robust against drastic changes in stimulus features (i.e., rotation size or direction) or task types (i.e., for motor adaptation and skill learning). However, the effect was absent when the task-irrelevant feedback did not carry the visuomotor relationship embedded in visuomotor rotation. Thus, though previous research on perceptual learning has related task-irrelevant feedback to changes in early sensory processes, our findings support its role in acquiring abstract sensorimotor knowledge during motor learning. Motor learning studies have traditionally focused on task-relevant feedback, but our study extends the scope of feedback processes and sheds new light on the dichotomy of explicit and implicit learning in motor adaptation and motor structure learning.NEW & NOTEWORTHY When the motor system faces perturbations, such as fatigue or new environmental changes, it adapts to these changes by voluntarily selecting new action plans or implicitly fine-tuning the control. We show that the action selection part can be enhanced without practice or explicit instruction. We further demonstrate that this enhancement is probably linked to the acquisition of abstract knowledge about the to-be-adapted novel visual feedback. Our findings draw an interesting parallel between motor and perceptual learning by showing that top-down information affects both types of procedural learning.

Abstract:Sensorimotor adaptation is influenced by both the size and variance of error information. In the present study, we varied visual uncertainty and error size in a factorial manner and evaluated their joint effect on adaptation, using a feedback method that avoids inherent limitations with standard visuomotor tasks. Uncertainty attenuated adaptation, but only when the error was small. This striking interaction highlights a novel constraint for models of sensorimotor adaptation. Sensorimotor adaptation is driven by sensory prediction errors, the difference between the predicted and actual feedback. When the position of the feedback is made uncertain, motor adaptation is attenuated. This effect, in the context of optimal sensory integration models, has been attributed to the motor system discounting noisy feedback and thus reducing the learning rate. In its simplest form, optimal integration predicts that uncertainty would result in reduced learning for all error sizes. However, these predictions remain untested since manipulations of error size in standard visuomotor tasks introduce confounds in the degree to which performance is influenced by other learning processes such as strategy use. Here, we used a novel visuomotor task that isolates the contribution of implicit adaptation, independent of error size. In two experiments, we varied feedback uncertainty and error size in a factorial manner. At odds with the basic predictions derived from the optimal integration theory, the results show that uncertainty attenuated learning only when the error size was small but had no effect when the error size was large. We discuss possible mechanisms that may account for this interaction, considering how uncertainty may interact with the relevance assigned to the error signal or how the output of the adaptation system in terms of recalibrating the sensorimotor map may be modified by uncertainty. Such remapping has been extensively studied in the visual domain, but the degree to which it occurs in modalities other than vision remains less well understood. Here, we manipulated the modality of reach target presentation to compare sensorimotor adaptation in response to perturbations of visual and auditory feedback location. We compared the extent of adaptation to perturbed sensory feedback for visual and auditory sensory modalities, and the magnitude of reach-direction aftereffects when the perturbation was removed. To isolate the contribution of implicit sensorimotor recalibration to adaptation in reach direction, we held sensory prediction errors and task-performance errors constant via a task-irrelevant clamp of sensory feedback. Seventy-two participants performed one of three experiments in which target location information and endpoint reach direction feedback were presented by loudspeakers (n = 24), headphones (n = 24), or a visual display (n = 24). Presentation durations for target stimuli (500 ms) and (non-veridical) endpoint feedback of reach direction (100 ms) were matched for visual and auditory modalities. For all three groups, when endpoint feedback was perturbed, adaptation was evident: reach-directions increased significantly in the direction opposite the clamped feedback, and a significant aftereffect persisted after participants were instructed that the perturbation had been removed. This study provides new evidence that implicit sensorimotor adaptation occurs in response to perturbed auditory feedback of reach direction, suggesting that an implicit neural process to recalibrate sensory to motor maps in response to sensory prediction errors may be ubiquitous across sensory modalities.

Interference underlies attenuation upon relearning in sensorimotor adaptation

Abstract:Savings refers to the gain in performance upon relearning a task. In sensorimotor adaptation, savings is tested by having participants adapt to perturbed feedback and, following a washout block during which the system resets to baseline, presenting the same perturbation again. While savings has been observed with these tasks, we have shown that the contribution from implicit sensorimotor adaptation, a process that uses sensory prediction errors to recalibrate the sensorimotor map, is actually attenuated upon relearning (Avraham et al., 2021). In the present study, we test the hypothesis that this attenuation is due to interference arising from the washout block, and more generally, from experience with a different relationship between the movement and the feedback. In standard adaptation studies, removing the perturbation at the start of the washout block results in a salient error signal in the opposite direction to that observed during learning. As a starting point, we replicated the finding that implicit adaptation is attenuated following a washout period in which the feedback now signals a salient opposite error. When we eliminated visual feedback during washout, implicit adaptation was no longer attenuated upon relearning, consistent with the interference hypothesis. Next, we eliminated the salient error during washout by gradually decreasing the perturbation, creating a scenario in which the perceived errors fell within the range associated with motor noise. Nonetheless, attenuation was still prominent. Inspired by this observation, we tested participants with an extended experience with veridical feedback during an initial baseline phase and found that this was sufficient to cause robust attenuation of implicit adaptation during the first exposure to the perturbation. This effect was context-specific: It did not generalize to movements that were not associated with the interfering feedback. Taken together, these results show that the implicit sensorimotor adaptation system is highly sensitive to memory interference from a recent experience with a discrepant action-outcome contingency.

Abstract:Integrating sensory information during movement and adapting motor plans over successive movements are both essential for accurate, flexible motor behaviour. When an ongoing movement is off target, feedback control mechanisms update the descending motor commands to counter the sensed error. Over longer timescales, errors induce adaptation in feedforward planning so that future movements become more accurate and require less online adjustment from feedback control processes. Both the degree to which sensory feedback is integrated into an ongoing movement and the degree to which movement errors drive adaptive changes in feedforward motor plans have been shown to scale inversely with sensory uncertainty. However, since these processes have only been studied in isolation from one another, little is known about how they are influenced by sensory uncertainty in real-world movement contexts where they co-occur. Here, we show that sensory uncertainty may impact feedforward adaptation of reaching movements differently when feedback integration is present versus when it is absent. In particular, participants gradually adjust their movements from trial-to-trial in a manner that is well characterised by a slow and consistent envelope of error reduction. Riding on top of this slow envelope, participants exhibit large and abrupt changes in their initial movement vectors that are strongly correlated with the degree of sensory uncertainty present on the previous trial. However, these abrupt changes are insensitive to the magnitude and direction of the sensed movement error. These results prompt important questions for current models of sensorimotor learning under uncertainty and open up new avenues for future exploration in the field.
Competition between parallel sensorimotor learning systems

Abstract:Sensorimotor learning is supported by at least two parallel systems: a strategic process that benefits from explicit knowledge and an implicit process that adapts subconsciously. How do these systems interact? Does one system's contributions suppress the other, or do they operate independently? Here, we illustrate that during reaching, implicit and explicit systems both learn from visual target errors. This shared error leads to competition such that an increase in the explicit system's response siphons away resources that are needed for implicit adaptation, thus reducing its learning. As a result, steady-state implicit learning can vary across experimental conditions, due to changes in strategy. Furthermore, strategies can mask changes in implicit learning properties, such as its error sensitivity. These ideas, however, become more complex in conditions where subjects adapt using multiple visual landmarks, a situation which introduces learning from sensory prediction errors in addition to target errors. These two types of implicit errors can oppose each other, leading to another type of competition. Thus, during sensorimotor adaptation, implicit and explicit learning systems compete for a common resource: error.

Abstract:Human movements are adjusted by motor adaptation in order to maintain their accuracy. There are two systems in motor adaptation, referred to as explicit or implicit adaptation. It has been suggested that the implicit adaptation is based on the prediction error and has been used in a number of motor adaptation studies. This study aimed to examine the effect of visual memory on prediction error in implicit visuomotor adaptation by comparing visually- and memory-guided reaching tasks. The visually-guided task is thought to be implicit learning based on prediction error, whereas the memory-guided task requires more cognitive processes. We observed the adaptation to visuomotor rotation feedback that is gradually rotated. We found that the adaptation and retention rates were higher in the visually-guided task than in the memory-guided task. Furthermore, the delta-band power obtained by electroencephalography (EEG) in the visually-guided task was increased immediately following the visual feedback, which indicates that the prediction error was larger in the visually-guided task. Our results show that the visuomotor adaptation is enhanced in the visually-guided task because the prediction error, which contributes update of the internal model, was more reliable than in the memory-guided task. Therefore, we suggest that the processing of the prediction error is affected by the task-type, which in turn affects the rate of the visuomotor adaptation.

This question is typically investigated using visuomotor tasks, in which sensation of movement is disturbed by conflicting visual feedback. The present study uses metacognitive judgements to investigate conscious access to movement signals, unchallenged by visual signals, in an index finger force task. We found that some participants can correctly assign metacognitive judgements (MCJs) to their own force, suggesting that participants do indeed have metacognitive access to sensorimotor signals. We found no correlation between metacognitive access to sensorimotor signal and variance in motor performance. Further, we found that in this purely sensorimotor task, internal focus of attention reduces variability in force compared to external focus of attention. Our results indicate that not only is it possible to access sensorimotor information, it is also possible to use focus of attention to reduce variability in force performance.

Abstract:Adaptation to consistently occurring sensorimotor errors is considered obligatory in nature. We probed the robustness of this finding by asking if humans can selectively attenuate adaptation based on the task-relevance of error signals. Subjects made planar reaches to three different targets: an arc (Experiment 1), a bar (Experiment 2), and a point (Experiment 3). During the reach, perturbations in extent (visuomotor gain), direction (visuomotor rotation) or both simultaneously were employed. In Experiment 1, subjects showed robust adaptation to the rotation when reaching to the arc even though the presence of this perturbation was irrelevant for achievement of the task goal. Interestingly however, rotation adaptation was strongly attenuated when it was presented simultaneously with a task-relevant gain perturbation. In Experiment 2, which involved reaches to the bar, again, subjects successfully adapted to the task-irrelevant gain perturbation when it occurred in isolation. However, adaptation was attenuated when the gain co-occurred with a task-relevant rotation. Experiment 3 revealed that the attenuation observed in the first two experiments was not due to an inability to adapt to co-occurring rotation and gain perturbations. Collectively, our results suggest that the sensorimotor system selectively tunes learning in the presence of multiple error signals, a finding that can potentially be explained by a biased competition mechanism. That is, given limited processing capacity, a salient attribute - the relevance of the error to the task goal in this case - is prioritized for processing and drives subsequent adaptive changes in motor output.

Abstract:During classical visuomotor adaptation, the implicit process is believed to emerge rather slowly; however, recent evidence has found this may not be true. Here, we further quantify the time-course of implicit learning in response to diverse feedback types, rotation magnitudes, feedback timing delays, and the role of continuous aiming on implicit learning. Contrary to conventional beliefs, we affirmed that implicit learning unfolds at a high rate in all feedback conditions. Increasing rotation size not only raises asymptotes, but also generally heightens explicit awareness, with no discernible difference in implicit rates. Cursor-jump and terminal feedback, with or without delays, predominantly enhance explicit adaptation while slightly diminishing the extent or the speed of implicit adaptation. In a continuous aiming reports condition, there is no discernible impact on implicit adaptation, and both the rate of implicit and explicit adaptation progress at indistinguishable speeds. Finally, investigating the assumed negative correlation as an indicator of additivity between implicit and explicit processes, we consistently observe a weak association across conditions. Our observation of implicit learning early in training in all tested conditions signifies how fast and robust our innate adaptation system is.
