Abstract:The further practical applications of halide perovskite quantum dots (QDs) are blocked by problems of instability and nonradiative Auger recombination manifested as photoluminescence blinking. Here, single core/shell structured perovskite semiconductor QDs are successfully fabricated by capping CsPbBr3 QD core with CdS shell. It is demonstrated that CsPbBr3/CdS core/shell QDs exhibit ultrahigh chemical stability and nonblinking photoluminescence with high quantum yield due to the reduced electronic traps within the core/shell structure. Efficiency of amplified spontaneous emission exhibits obvious enhancement compared to that of pure CsPbBr3 QDs, originating from the mitigated competition between stimulated emission and suppressed nonradiative biexciton Auger recombination. Furthermore, low-threshold whispering-gallery-mode lasing with a high-quality factor is achieved by incorporating CsPbBr3/CdS QDs into microtubule resonators. Density functional theory (DFT)-based first-principles calculations are also performed to reveal the atomic interface structure, which supports the existence of CsPbBr3/CdS structure. An interesting feature of spatially separated charge density at CsPbBr3/CdS interface is found, which may greatly contribute to the suppressed Auger recombination. The results provide a practical approach to improve the stability and suppress the blinking of halide perovskite QDs, which may pave the way for future applications for various optoelectronic devices.

Abstract:Low-dimension metal halide perovskites are attractive for bandgap tunable optoelectronic materials. Among them, 1-D CsPbBr3 quantum wires (QWs) are emerging as promising deep-blue luminescent material. However, the growth dynamics of 1-D perovskite QWs are intricate, making the study and control of 1-D QWs highly challenging. In this study, a strategy for controlling both the length and width of the CsPbBr3 QWs was realized. The temperature-dependent isotropic growth mechanism was revealed and employed as the main tool for the oriented growth of 1-D CsPbBr3 QWs for various aspect ratios. Our results pave the way for the controlled synthesis of ultrasmall perovskite nanocrystals.

Abstract:In article number 1900412, Juan Du, Yuxin Leng, Miao Zhou, and co-workers successfully fabricate single CsPbBr3/CdS core/shell structured quantum dots (QDs) by capping a CsPbBr3 QD core with a CdS shell. The core/shell QDs exhibit ultrahigh chemical stability and nonblinking photoluminescence. Furthermore, low threshold whispering-gallery-mode lasing with a high-quality factor is achieved by incorporating CsPbBr3/CdS QDs into microtubule resonators.

Abstract:We report a room-temperature colloidal synthesis of few-unit-cell-thick CsPbBr3 QWs with lengths over a hundred nanometers. The surfactant-directed oriented attachment growth mechanism was proposed to explain the formation of such CsPbBr3 QWs. Owing to the strong quantum confinement effect, the photoluminescence (PL) emission peak of few-unit-cell-thick CsPbBr3 QWs blue-shifted to 430 nm. The ensemble PL quantum yield (PLQY) of the few-unit-cell-thick CsPbBr3 QWs increased to 21.13% through a simple heat-treatment process. The improvement of PLQY was ascribed to the reduction of the density of surface trap states and defect states induced by the heat-treatment process. Notably, the dependence of the bandgap on the diameter with different numbers of unit cells was presented for the first time in 1-D CsPbBr3 QWs on the basis of the produced few-unit-cell-thick CsPbBr3 QWs.

Abstract:Despite impressive advances in the synthesis of perovskite quantum dots (PQDs), the ability to craft PQDs of the same dimension yet different architectures (e.g., solid vs. hollow) remains a grand challenge. Moreover, precise control over the architectures and assemblies of PQDs renders new optical and optoelectronic properties. Herein, we report on a robust amphiphilic star-like block copolymer nanoreactor strategy to rapidly create monodisperse solid and hollow PQDs of the same external diameter in-situ. The dimension of PQDs can be readily regulated by utilizing star-like copolymers. Compared to solid PQDs, as the inner diameter of hollow PQDs increases, their photoluminescence progressively blue-shifts. Moreover, stripe patterns of PQDs can be conveniently formed via meniscus-assisted self-assembly (MASA) and subsequently anion-exchanged to yield multi-colored stripes with a heterostructured transition zone. Conceptually, an array of PQDs including all inorganic lead-free and organic-inorganic PQDs, can be easily accessed for applications in lasers, LEDs, and solar cells.

Abstract:Two-dimensional transition metal dichalcogenide (2D TMD) crystals are versatile platforms for realizing emergent optoelectronic devices. However, the ability to produce large-area 2D TMDs with spatial homogeneity and to accomplish broadband photodetection by tuning the operating wavelengths in photodetectors are two paramount prerequisites for practical applications of 2D TMD-based photodetectors. Here, we demonstrated all-solution-processed broadband photodetectors based on the wafer-scale perovskite quantum dots (PQDs)/MoS 2 through light management via the monochromatization effect of the PQDs. The photodetectors exhibited broadband photodetection behavior that retained high photocurrents over a wide spectral range (254, 365, and 532 nm) by enhancing the photoresponse in the UV region through light management via the monochromatization effect of the PQDs. This intriguing strategy was proven with (i) electrical isolation realized by inserting an Al 2 O 3 insulator between the PQDs and MoS 2 and (ii) alteration of the PQD density. The rational nanohybrid-based photodetectors also exhibited superb air stability and exceptional bending durability.

Abstract:Abstract Metal halide perovskites have shown great promise as a potential candidate for next-generation solid state lighting and display technologies. However, a generic organic ligand-free and antisolvent-free solution method to fabricate highly efficient full-color perovskite light-emitting diodes has not been realized. Herein, by utilizing porous alumina membranes with ultra-small pore size as templates, we have successfully fabricated crystalline all-inorganic perovskite quantum wire arrays with ultrahigh density and excellent uniformity, using a generic organic ligand-free and anti-solvent-free solution method. The quantum confinement effect, in conjunction with the high light out-coupling efficiency, results in high photoluminescence quantum yield for blue, sky-blue, green and pure-red perovskite quantum wires arrays. Consequently, blue, sky-blue, green and pure-red LED devices with spectrally stable electroluminescence have been successfully fabricated, demonstrating external quantum efficiencies of 12.41%, 16.49%, 26.09% and 9.97%, respectively, after introducing a dual-functional small molecule, which serves as surface passivation and hole transporting layer, and a halide vacancy healing agent.

ODaCCI: Ontology-guided Data Curation for Multisite Clinical Research Data Integration in the NINDS Center for SUDEP Research

Abstract:Sudden Unexpected Death in Epilepsy (SUDEP) is the leading mode of epilepsy-related death. The Center for SUDEP Research (CSR) is an NINDS-funded Center Without Wall's initiative aimed at prospectively creating a comprehensive clinical research resource for SUDEP. This resource consists of a growing set of data and biological samples of a statistically significant cohort of patients at an elevated risk, best represented by the Epilepsy Monitoring Unit (EMU) patient population. The Informatics and Data Analytics Core (IDAC) of CSR has developed a state-of-the- art informatics infrastructure, to integrate patient data captured in multiple EMU's at a greatly accelerated pace. Data quality assurance is a priority of IDAC. This paper reports our approach, Ontology-guided Data Curation for Multisite Clinical Research Data Integration (ODaCCI), to address the challenging task of centralized data curation while new data is continuously generated and integrated from distributed sites. ODaCCI leverages the Epilepsy and Seizure Ontology not only for upstream data capture, but also for supporting a range of quality assurance tasks such as data quality monitoring, data update, and data reports. Between October 2014 and February 2016, ODaCCI has integrated phenotypic and electroencephalogram signal data of 629 patients from 7 clinical sites, while supporting continuous and asynchronous data quality enhancement overtime.

Abstract:Colloidal perovskite quantum dots (PQDs) have emerged as highly promising single photon emitters for quantum information applications. Presently, most strategies have focused on leveraging quantum confinement to increase the nonradiative Auger recombination (AR) rate to enhance single-photon (SP) purity in all-inorganic CsPbBr3 QDs. However, this also increases the fluorescence intermittency. Achieving high SP purity and blinking mitigation simultaneously remains a significant challenge. Here, we transcend this limitation with room-temperature synthesized weakly confined hybrid organic-inorganic perovskite (HOIP) QDs. Superior single photon purity with a low g(2)(0) < 0.07 ± 0.03 and a nearly blinking-free behavior (ON-state fraction >95%) in 11 nm FAPbBr3 QDs are achieved at room temperature, attributed to their long exciton lifetimes (τX) and short biexciton lifetimes (τXX). The significance of the organic A-cation is further validated using the mixed-cation FAxCs1-xPbBr3. Theoretical calculations utilizing a combination of the Bethe-Salpeter (BSE) and k·p approaches point toward the modulation of the dielectric constants by the organic cations. Importantly, our findings provide valuable insights into an additional lever for engineering facile-synthesized room-temperature PQD single photon sources.
Strongly Quantum-Confined Perovskite Nanowire Arrays for Color-Tunable Blue-Light-Emitting Diodes

Abstract:Color tunability of perovskite light-emitting diodes (PeLEDs) by mixed halide compositional engineering is one of the primary intriguing characteristics of PeLEDs. However, mixed halide PeLEDs are often susceptible to color red-shifting caused by halide ion segregation. In this work, strongly quantum-confined perovskite nanowires (QPNWs) made of CsPbBr3 are grown in nanoporous anodic alumina templates using a closed space sublimation process. By tuning the pore size with atomic layer deposition, QPNWs with a diameter of 6.6 to 2.8 nm have been successfully obtained, with continuous tunable photoluminescence emission color from green (512 nm) to pure blue (467 nm). To better understand the photophysics of QPNWs, carrier dynamics and the benefit of alumina passivation are studied and discussed in detail. Eventually, PeLEDs using various diameters of CsPbBr3 QPNWs are successfully fabricated with cyan color (492 nm) PeLEDs, achieving a record high 7.1% external quantum efficiency (EQE) for all CsPbBr3-based cyan color PeLEDs. Sky blue (481 nm) and pure blue (467 nm) PeLEDs have also been successfully demonstrated, respectively. The work here demonstrates a different approach to achieve quantum-confined one-dimensional perovskite structures and color-tunable PeLEDs, particularly blue PeLEDs.

Regulation of Quantum Wells Width Distribution in Quasi‐2D Perovskite Films for High‐Performance Photodetectors

Abstract:Dynamic optimization of the quantum‐well (QW) width distribution in quasi‐two‐dimensional (quasi‐2D) halide perovskite thin films is an effective approach for tuning the properties of photoelectric devices. Here, we demonstrate that the QWs width distribution in quasi‐2D perovskite films can be controlled only by using hydroiodic acid (HI) as an additive. A uniform distribution of the colloidal particle size in the quasi‐2D perovskite precursor solution was achieved through the formation of soluble iodoplumbate coordination complexes, PbI3− from the reaction of HI with PbI2, resulting in an improved phase purity in the final film. Density functional theory calculations indicate that the ideal n value quasi‐2D perovskite reaction pathway through the PbI3− complex has a lower enthalpy of formation than the random nucleation pathway without the HI additive. Benefiting from this merit, a high‐quality quasi‐2D perovskite film with optimized phase purity delivered a balanced carrier diffusion length and improved carrier mobility. The resultant photodetectors exhibited a light on/off ratio of 50000, a responsivity of 0.96 A W−1, and a detectivity of 5.7 × 1012 Jones at 532 nm. In addition, the state‐of‐the‐art device maintained more than 80% of its initial photocurrent after 720 h of storage at 30% relative humidity. This article is protected by copyright. Abstract:Structural defects are ubiquitous for polycrystalline perovskite films, compromising device performance and stability. Herein, a universal method is developed to overcome this issue by incorporating halide perovskite quantum dots (QDs) into perovskite polycrystalline films. CsPbBr3 QDs are deposited on four types of halide perovskite films (CsPbBr3 , CsPbIBr2 , CsPbBrI2 , and MAPbI3 ) and the interactions are triggered by annealing. The ions in the CsPbBr3 QDs are released into the thin films to passivate defects, and concurrently the hydrophobic ligands of QDs self-assemble on the film surfaces and grain boundaries to reduce the defect density and enhance the film stability. For all QD-treated films, PL emission intensity and carrier lifetime are significantly improved, and surface morphology and composition uniformity are also optimized. Furthermore, after the QD treatment, light-induced phase segregation and degradation in mixed-halide perovskite films are suppressed, and the efficiency of mixed-halide CsPbIBr2 solar cells is remarkably improved to over 11% from 8.7%. Overall, this work provides a general approach to achieving high-quality halide perovskite films with suppressed phase segregation, reduced defects, and enhanced stability for optoelectronic applications.

Abstract:Planar substrate supported semiconductor quantum well (QW) structures are not amenable to manipulation in miniature devices, while free-standing QW nanostructures, e.g., ultrathin nanosheets and nanoribbons, suffer from mechanical and environmental instability. Therefore, it is tempting to fashion high-quality QW structures on anisotropic and mechanically robust supporting nanostructures such as nanowires and nanoplates. Herein, we report a solution quasi-heteroepitaxial route for growing a barrier-confined quasi-QW structure (ZnSe/CdSe/ZnSe) on the supporting arms of ZnO nanotetrapods, which have a 1D nanowire structure, through the combination of ion exchange and successive deposition assembly. This resulted in highly crystalline and highly oriented quasi-QWs along the whole axial direction of the arms of the nanotetrapod because a transition buffer layer (ZnxCd1-xSe) was formed and in turn reduced the lattice mismatch and surface defects. Significantly, such a barrier-confined QW emits excitonic light similar to 17 times stronger than the heterojunction (HJ)-type structure (ZnSe/CdSe, HJ) at the single-particle level. Time-resolved photoluminescence from ensemble QWs exhibits a lifetime of 10 ns, contrasting sharply with similar to 300 ps for the control HJ sample. Single-particle PL and Raman spectra suggest that the barrier layer of QW has completely removed the surface trap states on the HJ and restored or upgraded the photoelectric properties of the semiconductor layer. Therefore, this deliberate heteroepitaxial growth protocol on the supporting nanotetrapod has realized a several micrometer long QW structure with high mechanical robustness and high photoelectric quality. We envision that such QWs integrated on 1D nanostructures will largely improve the performance of solar cells and bioprobes, among others.

Abstract:Layered metal-halide perovskites, or two-dimensional perovskites, can be synthesized in solution, and their optical and electronic properties can be tuned by changing their composition. We report a molecular templating method that restricted crystal growth along all crystallographic directions except for [110] and promoted one-dimensional growth. Our approach is widely applicable to synthesize a range of high-quality layered perovskite nanowires with large aspect ratios and tunable organic-inorganic chemical compositions. These nanowires form exceptionally well-defined and flexible cavities that exhibited a wide range of unusual optical properties beyond those of conventional perovskite nanowires. We observed anisotropic emission polarization, low-loss waveguiding (below 3 decibels per millimeter), and efficient low-threshold light amplification (below 20 microjoules per square centimeter).

Abstract:Charge collection narrowing (CCN) has been reported to be an efficient strategy to achieve optical filter-free narrowband photodetection (NPD) with metal halide perovskite (MHP) single crystals. However, the necessity of utilizing thick crystals in CCN limits their applications in large scale, flexible, self-driven, and high-performance optoelectronics. Here, for the first time, we fabricate vertically integrated MHP quantum wire/nanowire (QW/NW) array based photodetectors in nanoengineered porous alumina membranes (PAMs) showing self-driven broadband photodetection (BPD) and NPD capability simultaneously. Two cutoff detection edges of the NPDs are located at around 770 and 730 nm, with a full-width at half-maxima (fwhm) of around 40 nm. The optical bandgap difference between the NWs and the QWs, in conjunction with the high carrier recombination rate in QWs, contributes to the intriguing NPD performance. Thanks to the excellent mechanical flexibility of the PAMs, a flexible NPD is demonstrated with respectable performance. Abstract:Organometal halide perovskite (MAPbX3; MA = CH3NH3, X = Br, I) quantum dots (QDs) have attracted significant interest as color-adjustable and high-purity light-emitting materials for lighting and display applications. However, the photoluminescence (PL) intensity and lifetime of the organometal halide perovskites are negatively affected by their polarity and poor thermal stability. Here, to improve these issues, the synthesis of hydrophobic MAPbBr3 QDs@SiO2 core/shell structures through a split-ligand mediated re-precipitation (S-LMRP) method is presented. This is done through one-pot process without ligand exchange treatment after QDs synthesis. In this synthesis, 3-aminopropyl(diethoxy)methylsilane (APDEMS) is used as the silica precursor to obtain a hydrophobic surface with CH3 groups. Therefore, core/shell QDs synthesized using APDEMS are hydrophobic, which induce superior dispersibility. This also have good stability in polar solvents as well as thermal and photo environments, unlike the bare-QDs. This has the advantage of not only protecting the perovskite core due to the shell, but also suppressing the release of heavy metals. Moreover, it has a relatively narrow full width at half-maximum and a PL quantum yield of 96.5%. Turbiscan measurements demonstrated better dispersibility in the newly designed core/shell QD compared to the conventional QD (agglomerated in suspension). Finally, this proposed method enable is applicable to the preparation of not only green but also red and blue light-emitting core/shell QDs, which is expected to have an attractive impact for display applications.

Abstract:Quantum dots represent a unique class of solution‐processed semiconductors with unprecedented optoelectronic properties such as charge transport capability and light absorption/emission. Regarding the latter, the electroluminescence of these nanocrystals can spun a wide wavelength range from the visible to the near infrared through size engineering. However, they exhibit low photoluminescence quantum yield and inferior charge transport properties which hinders their application to light‐emitting diodes. On the other hand, halide perovskite semiconductors exhibit high charge carrier mobility and photoluminescence quantum efficiency approaching unity. However, their emission maxima cannot spun the whole near infrared range due to bandgap induced limitations. Here, we report unique combinations of these classes of semiconductors that allowed the fabrication of efficient near infrared electroluminescent hybrid quantum dot‐in‐perovskite device. In the first approach, core‐shell carbon polymer quantum dots were embedded into the perovskite emissive layer to induce passivation of defect sites and modify the nanomorphology hence resulting to significant efficiency enhancement. In the second approach, silica‐encapsulated silver sulphide quantum dots served as the emissive nanocrystals that were dispersed in a caesium‐containing triple cation perovskite matrix. The latter acted as a highly conductive medium that also offers effective passivation to the emissive nanocrystals. As a result, high external quantum efficiency for a long near infrared wavelength peak electroluminescence was achieved.

Abstract:As one of next-generation semiconductors, hybrid halide perovskites with tailorable optoelectronic properties are promising for photovoltaics, lighting, and displaying. This tunability lies on variable crystal structures, wherein the spatial arrangement of halide octahedra is essential to determine the assembly behavior and materials properties. Herein, we report to manipulate their assembling behavior and crystal dimensionality by locally collective hydrogen bonding effects. Specifically, a unique urea-amide cation is employed to form corrugated 1D crystals by interacting with bromide atoms in lead octahedra via multiple hydrogen bonds. Further tuning the stoichiometry, cations are bonded with water molecules to create a larger spacer that isolates individual lead bromide octahedra. It leads to zero-dimension (0D) single crystals, which exhibit broadband ‘warm’ white emission with photoluminescence quantum efficiency 5 times higher than 1D counterpart. This work suggests a feasible strategy to modulate the connectivity of octahedra and consequent crystal dimensionality for the enhancement of their optoelectronic properties.
Semiconducting Spaghetti-like Organic–Inorganic Nanojunctions Via Sequential Self-Assembly of Conjugated Polymers and Quantum Dots

Abstract:The ability to direct semiconducting polymers and inorganic nanomaterials into complex assemblies renders the creation of organic-inorganic nanocomposites with unique properties and functionalities. Herein, we report the crafting of highly interconnected semiconducting organic-inorganic nanocomposites (referred to as nanojunctions) comprising long poly(3-hexylthiophene) (P3HT) nanowires and lead telluride (PbTe) quantum dots (QDs) via two successive self-assembly processes. First, P3HT chains self-assemble into ultralong one-dimensional (1D) nanowires owing to interchain pi-pi stacking, followed by self-assembly of PbTe QDs on both sides of the P3HT nanowires driven by attractive van der Waals interactions between the hexyl side chains of P3HT and aliphatic chains capped on the surface of PbTe QDs. Notably, an integrated experimental and Monte Carlo (MC) simulation study reveals that the surface coverage of PbTe QDs within the P3HT/PbTe nanojunctions as well as the distance between adjacent PbTe QDs could be conveniently tailored via tuning the QD concentration. Interestingly, the photoluminescence of P3HT progressively decreases with an increased loading of PbTe QDs because of effective charge transfer from P3HT to PbTe. Conceptually, this two-step self-assembly strategy can be readily extended to other semiconducting polymers and a diversity of nanomaterials for potential applications in optoelectronic materials and devices.
