Abstract:A novel phenomenon is reported, wherein, if a mother droplet spreads faster than its critical velocity on a superhydrophilic surface, a smaller daughter droplet is emitted in a process that is controlled both dynamically and thermodynamically. Using a high-speed camera, we directly observed that while the lower part of the droplet spread, the upper part remained unchanged at first, and a temporary meniscus bridge formed in between. This meniscus bridge became unstable owing to capillary pressure, and broke when the lower part spread faster than its critical velocity, emitting the upper part as a daughter droplet. Through modeling and varying experimental parameters such as contact velocity, contact angle and surface structure, we determined that droplet emission could only be achieved by ultrafast spreading on superhydrophilic surfaces. The insights from these observations are helpful for the creation and application of special wettable surfaces.
Spreading of a viscoelastic drop on a solid substrate

Abstract:We study the spreading of viscous and viscoelastic drops on solid substrates with different wettability. In the early stages of spreading, we find that the viscoelastic drop spreads with faster and a different power law than the Newtonian drop (i.e. aqueous glycerine solution) for the same zero shear rate viscosity. We argue that the effect of viscoelasticity is only observable for experimental time scales in the order of the internal relaxation time of the polymer solution or longer times. Near the contact line, the effective viscosity is lower for the viscoelastic drop than for the Newtonian drop. Together with its shear rate dependency, this difference in effective viscosity can explain the different spreading dynamics. We support our experimental findings with a simple perturbation model that qualitatively agrees with our findings.

Abstract:Strongly non-Newtonian fluids namely, aqueous gels of starch, are shown to exhibit visco-elastic behavior, when subjected to a load. We study arrowroot and potato starch gels. When a droplet of the fluid is sandwiched between two glass plates and compressed, the area of contact between the fluid and plates increases in an oscillatory manner. This is unlike Newtonian fluids, where the area increases monotonically in a similar situation. The periphery moreover, develops an instability, which looks similar to Saffman Taylor fingers. This is not normally seen under compression. The loading history is also found to affect the manner of spreading. We attempt to describe the non-Newtonian nature of the fluid through a visco-elastic model incorporating generalized calculus. This is shown to reproduce qualitatively the oscillatory variation in the surface strain.

Rapid wetting of shear-thinning fluids

Abstract:Using experiments and numerical simulations, we investigate the spontaneous spreading of droplets of aqueous glycerol (Newtonian) and aqueous polymer (shear-thinning) solutions on smooth surfaces. We find that in the first millisecond the spreading of the shear-thinning solutions is identical to the spreading of water, regardless of the polymer concentration. In contrast, aqueous glycerol solutions show a different behavior, namely, significantly slower spreading rate than water. In the initial rapid spreading phase, the dominating forces that can resist the wetting are inertial forces and contact-line friction. For the glycerol solutions, an increase in glycerol concentration effectively increases the contact-line friction, resulting in increased resistance to wetting. For the polymeric solutions, however, an increase in polymer concentration does not modify contact-line friction. As a consequence, the energy dissipation at the contact line can not be controlled by varying the amount of additives for shear-thinning fluids. The reduction of the spreading rate of shear-thinning fluids on smooth surfaces in the rapid wetting regime can only be achieved by increasing solvent viscosity. Our results have implications for phase-change applications where the control of the rapid spreading rate is central, such as anti-icing and soldering

Spreading of Low-viscosity Ink Filaments Driven by Bath Viscoelasticity in Embedded Printing

Abstract:Inks deposited in conventional direct ink writing need to be able to support their own weight and that of the upper layers with minimal deformation to preserve the structural integrity of the three-dimensional (3D) printed parts. This constraint limits the range of usable inks to high-viscosity materials. Embedded printing enables the use of much softer inks by depositing the materials in a bath of another fluid that provides external support, thus diversifying the types of 3D printable structures. The interactions between the ink and bath fluids, however, give rise to a unique type of defect: spreading of the dispensed ink behind the moving nozzle. By printing horizontal threads made of dyed water in baths of Carbopol suspensions, we demonstrate that the spreading can be attributed to the pressure field generated in the viscous bath by the relative motion of the nozzle. As the pressure gradient increases with the viscosity of the bath fluid while the viscosity of the ink resists the flow, a larger bath-to-ink viscosity ratio results in more spreading for low-concentration Carbopol baths. For high-concentration, yield-stress-fluid baths, we find that the steady-state viscosity alone cannot account for the spreading, as the elastic stress becomes comparable to the viscous stress and the bath fluid around the dispensed ink undergoes fluidization and resolidification. By parameterizing the transient rheology of the high-concentration Carbopol suspensions using a simple viscoelastic model, we suggest that the ink spreading is exacerbated by the elasticity but is mitigated by the yield stress as long as the yield stress is low enough to allow steady injection of the ink. These results help illuminate the link between the bath rheology and the printing quality in embedded 3D printing.

Abstract:We investigate numerically the spreading dynamics of a bubble coming into contact with a smooth solid substrate in a viscous liquid. The substrate is partially wettable, and the singularity of the moving contact line is relieved by adopting the Navier-slip model. The Stokes equations are solved by employing a boundary element method coupled with adaptive mesh refinement. This allows us to realize sufficiently small slip lengths down to in dimensionless form, which is crucial to resolve the local interface structures at the early stage of spreading. The results show that the early-stage spreading of the bubble is always characterized by the growth and propulsion of a dewetting liquid rim close to the contact line, while the macroscopic interface remains unchanged. The evolution of the contact line and the morphology of the rim depends on the wettability and the slip length, and a parametric investigation is performed. Based on mass conservation, a relation between the rim size and the spreading radius is established. We also propose an analytical prediction of the temporal variation in the contact line radius at the early stage of spreading, which is found to follow a logarithmically corrected linear relation rather than a pure power law. Moreover, the early stages of bubble spreading are qualitatively similar for two-dimensional and axisymmetric configurations.

Elasto-viscoplastic Spreading: from Plastocapillarity to Elastocapillarity

Abstract:We study the spreading of elastoviscoplastic (EVP) droplets under surface tension effects. The non- Newtonian material flows like a viscoelastic liquid above the yield stress and behaves like a viscoelastic solid below it. Hence, the droplet initially flows under surface tension forces but eventually reaches a final equilibrium shape when the stress everywhere inside the droplet falls below the resisting rheological stresses. We use numerical simulations and combine Volume-of-Fluid (VOF) method and an EVP constitutive model to systematically study the dynamics of spreading and the final shape of the droplets. The spreading process examined in this study finds applications in coating, droplet-based inkjet printing, and 3D printing, where complex fluids such as paints, thermoplastic filaments, or bio-inks are deposited onto surfaces. Additionally, the computational framework enables the study of a wide range of multiphase interfacial phenomena, from elastocapillarity to plastocapillarity.

Spreading of graphene oxide suspensions droplets on smooth surfaces

Abstract:Understanding and predicting the spreading of droplets on solid surfaces is crucial in many applications such as inkjet printing, printed electronics and spray coating where the fluid is a suspension and in general non-Newtonian. However, many models that predict the maximum spreading diameter usually only apply to Newtonian fluids. Here we study experimentally and theoretically the maximum spreading diameter of graphene oxide suspension droplets impacting on a smooth surface for a wide range of concentrations and impact velocities of up to 6 g/l and 3 m/s, respectively. As the particle concentration increases the rheological behaviour changes from a viscous fluid to a shear-thinning yield stress fluid and the maximum spreading diameter decreases. The rheology for all concentrations is well described by a Herschel-Bulkley model that allows us to determine the characteristic viscosity during spreading. We use this viscosity to develop an energy balance model that takes into account the viscous dissipation and change in surface energies to find the maximum spread diameter for a given impact velocity. The model contains one non-dimensional parameter that encodes both the dynamic contact angle during spreading and the droplet shape at maximum spread. Our model is in good agreement with our data at all concentrations and agrees well with literature data on Newtonian fluids. Furthermore, the model gives the correct limits in the viscous and capillary regime and can be solved analytically for Newtonian fluids.

Abstract:This study presents the spreading of a single filament of a yield stress (viscoplastic) fluid extruded onto a pre-wetted solid surface. The filaments spread laterally under surface tension forces until they reach a final equilibrium shape when the yield stress dominates. We use a simple experimental setup to print the filaments on a moving surface and measure their final width using optical coherence tomography. Additionally, we present a scaling law for the final width and determine the corresponding pre-factor using asymptotic analysis. We then analyse the level of agreement between the theory and experiments and discuss the possible origins of discrepancies. The process studied here has applications in extrusion-based thermoplastic and bio-3D printing.

Abstract:Existing energy balance models, which estimate maximum droplet spreading, insufficiently capture the droplet spreading from low to high Weber and Reynolds numbers and contact angles. This is mainly due to the simplified definition of the viscous dissipation term and incomplete modeling of the maximum spreading time. In this particular research, droplet impact on a smooth sapphire surface is studied for seven glycerol concentrations between 0% - 100%, and 294 data points are acquired using high-speed photography. Fluid properties such as density, surface tension, and viscosity are also measured. For the first time according to the authors' knowledge, we incorporate the fluid viscosity in the modeling of the maximum spreading time based on the recorded data. We also estimate the characteristic velocity of the viscous dissipation term in the energy balance equation. These viscosity-based characteristic scales help to formulate a more comprehensive maximum droplet spreading model. Thanks to this improvement, our model successfully fits the data available in the literature for various fluids and surfaces compared to the existing models.

Abstract:Significance Soft solids such as gels are routinely used to coat solid surfaces to control wetting and adhesion. While wetting statics on these coatings have received a lot of attention, the dynamics have hardly been studied. Here, we show that energy dissipation during spreading depends not only on the viscoelasticity of the gel but also on the thickness of the coating. We provide both an analytical model and a scaling law that predict the dynamic contact angle—i.e., the signature of dissipation in the droplet–substrate–atmosphere system—as a function of the mechanical properties of the gel and the thickness of the coating. Finally, we show that droplets moving on coatings having thickness gradients drift toward regions of higher dissipation.

Abstract:We study squeeze flow of two different fluids (castor oil and ethylene glycol) between a pair of glass plates and a pair of perspex plates, under an applied load. The film thickness is found to vary with time as a power-law, where the exponent increases with load. After a certain time interval the area of fluid-solid contact saturates to a constant value. This saturation area, increases with load at different rates for different fluid-solid combinations.

Abstract:Spreading on the free surface of a complex fluid is ubiquitous in nature and industry, owing to the wide existence of complex fluids. Here we report on a fingering instability that develops during Marangoni spreading on a deep layer of polymer solution. In particular, the wavelength depends on molecular weight and concentration of the polymer solution. We use the Transmission Lattice Method to characterize the finger height at the micron scale. We model the evolution of spreading radius, involving viscoelastic and shear thinning effects, to suggest a more generalized law than the spreading of Newtonian fluids. We give physical explanation on the origin of the fingering instability as due to normal stresses at high shear rate generating high contact angle and deformation at the leading edge, and so selects the wavelength of the fingering instability. Understanding the spreading mechanism has particular implication in airway drug delivery, and surface coating with patterns.

Bursting bubble in an elasto-viscoplastic medium

Abstract:A gas bubble sitting at a liquid-gas interface can burst following the rupture of the thin liquid film separating it from the ambient, owing to the large surface energy of the resultant cavity. This bursting bubble forms capillary waves, a Worthington jet, and subsequent droplets for a Newtonian liquid medium. However, rheological properties of the liquid medium like elasto-viscoplasticity can greatly affect these dynamics. Using direct numerical simulations, this study exemplifies how the complex interplay between elasticity (in terms of elastic stress relaxation) and yield stress influences the transient interfacial phenomena of bursting bubbles. We investigate how bursting dynamics depends on capillary, elastic, and yield stresses by exploring the parameter space of the Deborah number $De$ (dimensionless relaxation time of elastic stresses) and the plastocapillary number $\mathcal{J}$ (dimensionless yield-stress of the medium), delineating four distinct characteristic behaviours. Overall, we observe a non-monotonic effect of elastic stress relaxation on the jet development while plasticity of the elasto-viscoplastic medium is shown to affect primarily the jet evolution only at faster relaxation times (low $De$). The role of elastic stresses on jet development is elucidated with the support of energy budgets identifying different modes of energy transfer within the elasto-viscoplastic medium. The effects of elasticity on the initial progression of capillary waves and droplet formation are also studied. In passing, we study the effects of solvent-polymer-viscosity ratio on bursting dynamics and show that polymer viscosity can increase the jet thickness apart from reducing the maximum height of the jet.

Fluidisation of yield stress fluids under vibration

Abstract:Motivated by the industrial processing of chocolate, we study experimentally the fluidisation of a sessile drop of yield-stress fluid on a pre-existing layer of the same fluid under vertical sinusoidal oscillations. We compare the behaviours of molten chocolate and Carbopol which are both shear-thinning with a similar yield stress but exhibit very different elastic properties. We find that these materials spread when the forcing acceleration exceeds a threshold which is determined by the initial deposition process. However, they exhibit very different spreading behaviours: whereas chocolate exhibits slow long-term spreading, the Carbopol drop rapidly relaxes its stress by spreading to a new equilibrium shape with an enlarged footprint. This spreading is insensitive to the history of the forcing. In addition, the Carbopol drop performs large-amplitude oscillations with the forcing frequency, both above and below the threshold. We investigate these viscoelastic oscillations and provide evidence of complex nonlinear viscoelastic behaviour in the vicinity of the spreading threshold. In fact, for forcing accelerations greater than the spreading threshold, our drop automatically adjusts its shape to remain at the yield stress. We discuss how our vibrated-drop experiment offers a new and powerful approach to probing the yield transition in elastoviscoplastic fluids.

Yield stress fluids solidifying in capillary imbibition

Abstract:When subjected to external stress exceeding their yield stress ( ), yield stress fluids (YSFs) undergo transition from solid to liquid. While the flow dynamics of capillary flows – including wetting, coating, spreading, and wicking – can be predicted accurately for fluids without yield stress, only a few asymptotic solutions have been validated against experiments for YSFs. In this study, we explore experimentally and theoretically the entire dynamics and solidifying process during capillary imbibition of YSFs, representing the fundamental aspect of capillarity-driven flow. We observe that during the gradual deceleration of capillary rise, YSFs exhibit apparent flow below . This unexpected behaviour is linked to wall slip, manifested as plug flow in particle image velocimetry analyses. We introduce a model with numerical solutions, grounded in the rheological properties of YSFs and slip mechanisms, to accurately describe this liquid–solid transitional behaviour.

Abstract:Spreading non-Newtonian liquids with non-power-law rheology on completely wetting surfaces are seldom investigated. This study assessed the wetting behavior of polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS), a Newtonian fluid, two carboxymethylcellulose (CMC) sodium solutions, a PDMS+2%w/w silica nanoparticle suspension and three polyethylene glycol (PEG400)+5-10%w/w silica nanoparticle suspensions (non-power-law fluids) on a mica surface. The theta(D)-U and R-t data for spreading drops of the six tested, non-power-law fluids can be described by power-law wetting models. We propose that this behavior is attributable to a uniform shear rate (a few tens to a few hundreds of s(-1)) distributed over the thin-film regime that controls spreading dynamics. Estimated film thickness was below the resolution of an optical microscope for direct observation. Approximating a general non-Newtonian fluid spreading as a power-law fluid greatly simplifies theoretical analysis and data interpretation.

Abstract:Hypothesis Spreading of liquids on soft solids often occurs intermittently, i.e., the liquid's wetting front switches between sticking and slipping. Studies of this so-called stick-slip wetting on soft solids mostly are confined within quasi-static or forced spreading conditions. In these situations, because the sticking duration is set much larger than the viscoelastic relaxation time of the solid, a ridge is persistently and fully developed at the wetting front as the soft solid yields to the liquid's surface tension. The sticking duration and spreading velocity, therefore, were shown to have little impact to the contact angle change required for stick-to-slip transitions. For unsteady wetting of soft solids, a commonly encountered but largely unexplored situation, we hypothesize that the stick-to-slip transition is controlled not only by a combination of sticking duration and the spreading velocity, but also by an increasing depinning threshold caused by the growing ridge at the wetting front. Experiment We performed unsteady wetting experiment on soft solids by letting water droplets spread freely on soft solid surfaces of various stiffness. We capture both the stick-slip spreading behavior and growing wetting ridges using synchronous high-speed imaging and high-speed interferometry. Recorded data of liquid spreading and solid deforming at the wetting front were analyzed to shed light on the relation between stick-slip characteristics and the growing wetting ridge. Findings We find that intermittent wetting on a soft solid surface results from a competition between three key factors: liquid inertia, capillary force change during sticking, and growing pinning force caused by the solid's viscoelastic response. We theoretically formulate their quantitative contributions to predict how stick-to-slip transitions occur, i.e., how the contact angle change and sticking duration depend on the liquid's spreading velocity and the solid's viscoelastic characteristics. This provides a mechanistic understanding and methods to control unsteady wetting phenomena in diverse applications, from tissue engineering and fabrication of flexible electronics to biomedicine.

Wetting induced fluid spread on structured surfaces at micro scale

Abstract:Downsizing fluidic devices raises many problems, one been the rapid increase of pressure gradient that drives the fluid flow. In this context, the surface induced fluid spread has attracted increasing interest. Here, we experimental investigate how the surface properties such as structure profiles and wetting properties play their role in driving fluid spread. The structured surfaces with different structure profiles were fabricated by using nanosecond laser with line scanning mode on the Si substrates (typical hydrophilic material) and their wetting properties were adjusted by sputter-coating different material films with low surface energy. Then the spread of the red ink solution on the as-prepared surfaces was observed by a microscopy. We found that in all cases with different structure profiles and wetting properties, the red ink solution spreads along the grooves on the structured surfaces. The relation of the spreading distance of the red ink solution in these grooves (z) with the spreading time t is in accord with the typical relation z = ct 1/2. With the increase in both the width of the grooves and the wetting properties, the parameter c increases, indicating that the red ink solution spreads in the grooves with a higher velocity. These results indicate that the structured hydrophilic surfaces can offer certain drag force for fluid over them. Abstract:Drop collision with a solid particle is a ubiquitous phenomenon in a wide range of applications, including rain, spray coating, cooling or cleaning, particle encapsulation, inkjet printing, and additive manufacturing. Understanding the dynamics of drop collision is essential for optimizing these processes. In this study, we present a comprehensive experimental and analytical investigation of non-axisymmetric as well as axisymmetric drop impact on a solid particle. We use a high-speed video system to visualize the drop profile during the impact, and measure the drop height and spreading diameter for different liquid viscosities, ratios of the target to drop diameters, offsets, and various other impact parameters. We then develop a theoretical model for drop spreading on a solid spherical particle that relies on the formulation of a remote asymptotic solution for the inviscid flows, generated by non-axisymmetric drop impact. Next, the viscous effects in a thin viscous boundary layer are considered, which allows the formulation of an expression for the residual lamella thickness and maximum spreading. The theoretically predicted evolution of the lamella thickness, the residual film thickness, and the maximum spreading angle agree well with the experimental data presented in this work and the literature. Finally, we present a novel approach for in situ measurement of liquid viscosity, drop impact viscometry, at high shear rates via a single drop impact experiment, with potential application in industries where non-Newtonian drops play a major role, such as pesticide spraying, paint droplet spreading, blood drop impact and fuel injectors.
