Abstract:Background:Emotional blunting is prevalent in patients with mood disorders and adversely affects the overall treatment outcome. The Oxford Depression Questionnaire is a validated psychometric instrument for assessing emotional blunting. We aimed to evaluate the reliability and validity of the Chinese version of the ODQ (ODQ) in Chinese patients with mood disorders.Methods:136 mood disorders patients and 95 healthy control participants were recruited at the First Affiliated Hospital of Zhejiang University, School of Medicine. Patients were assessed using the ODQ, Beck Depression Inventory-II (BDI-II), and Montgomery-Asberg Depression Rating Scale (MADRS). Internal consistency reliability and test-retest reliability were analyzed. Confirmatory factor analysis and correlation analysis were used to evaluate construct and convergent validity.Results:A total of 136 patients with mood disorders and 95 healthy controls participated in this study. Cronbach α values were 0.928 (ODQ-20) and 0.945 (ODQ-26). Test-retest reliability coefficients were 0.798 (ODQ-20) and 0.836 (ODQ-26) (p<0.05); intraclass correlation coefficient values were 0.777 (ODQ-20) and 0.781 (ODQ-26) (p<0.01). The score of ODQ was positively correlated with BDI-II and MADRS (r=0.326~0.719, 0.235~0.537, p<0.01). The differences in the ODQ scores between the patient and control groups were statistically significant.Conclusion:The reliability, structural validity, and criterion validity of the ODQ applied to patients with mood disorders meet the psychometric requirements, and the scale can be used to assess emotional blunting in Chinese patients with mood disorders.
Psychometric Properties of the Chinese Version of the Self-Reporting Questionnaire 20 (Srq-20) in Community Settings

Abstract:Background: Community mental health services in China are in need of a brief, valid instrument to identify mental disorders. Many studies support the Self-Reporting Questionnaire 20 (SRQ-20) as a cost-effective instrument with which to measure community mental health, but there have been no previous studies conducted with the Chinese version of SRQ-20. In this paper, the psychometric properties of the Chinese version of SRQ-20 in community settings were investigated. Method: SRQ-20 was used to evaluate 959 participants from 10 communities of Hangzhou City and 60 participants from two community primary care centres for the presence of mental disorders. Discriminative, concurrent, and construct validity as well as internal consistency and screening properties of SRQ-20 were evaluated. Results: Cronbach’s α for SRQ-20 was 0.90 for primary care and 0.91 for the community. Item-total correlation coefficients ranged from 0.40 to 0.73 in primary care, and from 0.51 to 0.69 in the community. The test-retest correlation coefficient was 0.93 in primary care and 0.94 in the community. Varimax-rotated principal component analysis of the SRQ-20 items yielded three factors: depressive symptoms, anxiety symptoms and somatic symptoms. The area under the ROC curve was 0.83 (SE =0.04, 95% CI 0.75—0.90) for the community and primary care samples. The optimal cut-off point for SRQ-20 was 6/7 yielding sensitivity of 93% and specificity of 62%. Conclusion: SRQ-20 appears to be a reliable and valid measure of mental disorders in the community in China.
Reliability and validity of the Chinese version of self-reporting questionnaire for the screening of mental disorder among community population

Abstract:Objective To investigate the psychometric properties of the Chinese version of the SRQ-20 in community settings.Methods 956 participants from 10 communities of Hangzhou City and 60 participants from 2 community primary care centers were evaluated by the SRQ-20 for the presence of mental disorders.Discriminative,concurrent,and construct validity as well as internal consistency and screening properties of the SRQ-20 were evaluated.Results Cronbach's alpha for the SRQ-20 was 0.91,and item-total correlation coefficients ranged from 0.51 to 0.69 in the community.The test-retest correlation coefficient was 0.93 in primary care.Varimax-rotated principal component analysis of the SRQ-20 items yielded three factors: depressive symptoms,anxiety symptoms,and somatic symptoms,accounting for 54.17% of total variance.The area under the receiver operating characteristic(ROC) curve was 0.83.The optimal cut-off point for the SRQ-20 was 6/7 yielding sensitivity of 84% and specificity of 72%.Conclusions The SRQ-20 appears to be a reliable and a valid screening tool for common mental disorders in the community of China.

Abstract:In this article, we describe the development and preliminary psychometric properties of the Structured Interview of Personality Organization (STIPO), a semistructured interview designed for the dimensional assessment of identity, primitive defenses, and reality testing, the three primary content domains in the model of personality health and disorder elaborated by Kernberg (1984; Kernberg & Caligor, 2005). Results of this investigation, conducted in a clinical sample representing a broad range of personality pathology, indicate that identity and primitive defenses as operationalized in the STIPO are internally consistent and that interrater reliability for all 3 content domains is adequate. Validity findings suggest that the assessment of one's sense of self and significant others (Identity) is predictive of measures of positive and negative affect, whereas the maladaptive ways in which the subject uses his or her objects for purposes of regulating one's self experience (Primitive Defenses) is predictive of measures of aggression and personality disorder traits associated with cluster B personality disorders. We discuss implications of these findings in terms of the theory-driven and trait-based assessment of personality pathology.

Abstract:There is a dearth of cross-cultural data on the psychometric properties of the revised Suicide Crisis Inventory (SCI)− 2. Our objective was to examine the factor structure, reliability, and validity of the SCI-2 among Indian adults.Using an online survey method, between August 20, 2020 and January 31, 2021, an anonymous questionnaire containing general sociodemographic information and self-report measures was circulated over email and social media. Confirmatory factor analyses (CFA) of the SCI-2 was carried out. We also examined the internal consistency of the SCI-2 and tested its convergent validity against the Suicide Narrative Inventory (SNI) and the Perceived Stress Scale (PSS-10).A total of 302 participants (Mean age = 43.5 ± 17.9 years, 53.6% female) were obtained. Results of the one-factor CFA indicated good model fit (χ2[1769] = 5368.75, p < 0.001, Comparative Fit Index [CFI] =0.99, Root mean square error of approximation [RMSEA] =0.08). Similarly, the five-factor CFA also exhibited strong model fit (χ2[1759] = 4215.54, p < 0.001, CFI = 1.00, RMSEA =0.07). Comparison of these models indicated that the five-factor model demonstrated superior model fit (Δχ2[10] = 278.88, p < 0.001). The SCI-2 total and subscale scores showed excellent internal consistency and good convergent validity against most domains of the SNI and PSS-10.Among Indian adults, the SCI-2 demonstrated good psychometric properties with the proposed five-factor solution providing the best fit. These findings provide support for the SCI construct and its assessment with the SCI-2 in an Asian setting.

Abstract:Both the new ICD-11 and the latest Alternative DSM-5 Model for Personality Disorders focus on self and interpersonal functioning as the central feature of personality pathology, also acknowledging that personality disorders are organized along a dimensional continuum of severity. This revised understanding is in line with long-standing psychodynamic conceptualisations of personality pathology, in particular Kernberg's object relations model of personality organization. Despite existing evidence for the clinical utility of the derived Structured Interview of Personality Organization (STIPO-R), empirical support for the identification of clear cut-points between the different levels of personality functioning is missing. For this purpose, a total of 764 adult participants were recruited across two clinical (outpatient and inpatient) settings ( n = 250) and two non-clinical (university students and general community) samples ( n = 514). Results from the mixture modeling suggested the existence of five groups across the clinical and non-clinical samples that covered: healthy personality functioning, maladaptive personality rigidity, and mild, moderate, and severe levels of personality pathology. All five indicators of personality organization were found to be reliable predictors of personality pathology. Of the five STIPO-R indicators, Aggression and Moral Values had the most discriminative power for differentiating between the Mild, Moderate, and Severe personality disorder groups. Implications of these findings are discussed.

Abstract:The present study aimed to examine the psychometric properties of the Chinese Inventory of Personality Organization (IPOCH). The IPO-CH was administered to a sample of 336 Chinese undergraduates, and, among them, 125 participants completed the survey 2 months later. Results showed that the IPO-CH has adequate internal consistency (Cronbach's alpha = .95) and test-retest reliability (r =.60). Exploratory factor analysis did not replicate the original five-factor model but suggested a four-factor model. The IPO-CH manifested good concurrent validity and convergent validity concerning the severity of the pathological personality disorder symptoms. Furthermore, the IPOCH predicted participants' depression severity and life events evaluated 2 months later. Future research may need to evaluate its properties in Chinese clinical samples.

Abstract:The Personality Diagnostic Questionnaire-4+ (PDQ-4+) has been regarded as an effective instrument for screening people with personality disorders in Western countries. Recently, it has also been widely used in research of personality disorders on the Chinese mainland. Using a sample of 4,811 Chinese college students, the reliability and validity of the Chinese version of the PDQ-4+ (Yang, Rorbert, & Paul, 2000) were examined. Results indicated that the internal consistency and test-retest reliability of PDQ-4+ subscales were psychometrically acceptable. Exploratory factor analysis resulted in a 3-factor solution, which conforms to the conceptual categorization of personality disorders in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Disorders - III (American Psychiatric Association, 1987). Significant correlation was found between PDQ-4+ subscale scores and the factor scores of the Childhood Experience of Care and Abuse Questionnaire (Bifulco, Bernazzani, Moran, & Jacobs, 2005). The sensitivity and specificity of the PDQ-4+ in the Chinese mainland population need further study.

Abstract:Abstract Background The Personality Inventory for DSM-5 Brief Form (PID-5-BF) is a 25-item measuring tool evaluating maladaptive personality traits for the diagnosis of personality disorders(PDs). As a promising scale, its impressive psychometric properties have been verified in some countries, however, there have been no studies about the utility of the PID-5-BF in Chinese settings. The current study aimed to explore the maladaptive personality factor model which was culturally adapted to China and to examine psychometric properties of the PID-5-BF among Chinese undergraduate students and clinical patients. Methods Seven thousand one hundred fifty-five undergraduate students and 451 clinical patients completed the Chinese version of the PID-5-BF. Two hundered twenty-eight students were chosen randomly for test-retest reliability at a 4-week interval. Exploratory factor analysis (EFA) and confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) were conducted to discover the most suitable factor structure in China, measurement invariance(MI), internal consistency, and external validity were also calculated. Results The theoretical five-factor model was acceptable, but the exploratory six-factor model was more applicable in both samples (Undergraduate sample: CFI = 0.905, TLI = 0.888, RMSEA = 0.044, SRMR = 0.039; Clinical sample: CFI = 0.904, TLI = 0.886, RMSEA = 0.047, SRMR = 0.060). In the Chinese six-factor model, the Negative Affect domain was divided into two factors and the new factor was named “Interpersonal Relationships”, which was in line with the Big-Six Personality model in Chinese. Measurement invariance across non-clinical and clinical sample was established (configural, weak, strong MI, and partial strict MI). Aside from acceptable internal consistency (Undergraduate sample: alpha = 0.84, MIC = 0.21; Clinical sample: alpha = 0.86, MIC = 0.19) and test-retest reliability(0.73), the correlation between the 25-item PID-5-BF and the 220-item PID-5 was significant( p < 0.01). The six PDs measured by Personality diagnostic questionnaire-4+ (PDQ-4+) were associated with and predicted by expected domains of PID-5-BF. Conclusions Both the theoretical five-factor model and the exploratory six-factor model of the PID-5-BF were acceptable to the Chinese population. The five-factor model could allow for comparison and integration with other work on the original theoretical model. However, the Chinese six-factor structure may be more culturally informed in East Asian settings. In sum, the PID-5-BF is a convenient and useful screening tool for personality disorders.

[Reliability and Validity of the Chinese Version of the 5-Item Oral Health Impact Profile].

Abstract:OBJECTIVE:To evaluate the reliability and validity of the Chinese version of the 5-item oral health impact profile (OHIP-5). METHODS:According to the international guidelines, the Chinese version of the OHIP-5 was produced. It was applied to patients who visit our clinic. The reliability of the scale was evaluated by internal consistency reliability and test-retest reliability. In addition, the validity of the scale was evaluated by construct validity and convergent validity. RESULTS:A total of 556 patients were enrolled in the study. The Cronbach's alpha and the intraclass correlation coefficient values (ICC) of the Chinese version of the OHIP-5 were 0.868, 0.831, respectively. The results of the confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) showed that the one-factor model provided an acceptable fit to the data. The fit indices were: the chi-square fit statistics/degree of freedom (χ²/df)=2.419, the goodness-of-fit index (GFI)=0.995, the adjusted goodness of fit index (AGFI)= 0.960, the normed fit index (NFI)=0.996, the incremental fit index (IFI)=0.997, the Tucker-Lewis index (TLI)= 0.985, the comparative fit index (CFI)=0.997, and the root mean square error of approximation (RMSEA)=0.070. For the convergent validity of the scale, the Spearman's rank correlation coefficient was 0.674. CONCLUSIONS:The Chinese version of OHIP-5 had a good reliability and validity by rigorous psychometric properties. Overall, it can be further promoted in clinical research and epidemiological investigations.

Abstract:INTRODUCTION:Borderline personality disorder (BPD) is the most studied of the axis II disorders. One of the most widely used diagnostic instruments is the Diagnostic Interview for Borderline Patients-Revised (DIB-R). The aim of this study was to test the reliability and validity of DIB-R for use in the Chinese culture.METHODS:The reliability and validity of the DIB-R Chinese version were assessed in a sample of 236 outpatients with a probable BPD diagnosis. The Structured Clinical Interview for DSM-IV Personality Disorders (SCID-II) was used as a standard. Test-retest reliability was tested six months later with 20 patients, and inter-rater reliability was tested on 32 patients.RESULTS:The Chinese version of the DIB-R showed good internal global consistency (Cronbach's α of 0.916), good test-retest reliability (Pearson correlation of 0.704), good inter-rater reliability (intra-class correlation coefficient of 0.892 and kappa of 0.861). When compared with the DSM-IV diagnosis as measured by the SCID-II, the DIB-R showed relatively good sensitivity (0.768) and specificity (0.891) at the cutoff of 7, moderate diagnostic convergence (kappa of 0.631), as well as good discriminating validity.DISCUSSION:The Chinese version of the DIB-R has good psychometric properties, which renders it a valuable method for examining the presence, the severity, and component phenotypes of BPD in Chinese samples.
The Hierarchical Structure and Predictive Validity of the Personality Inventory for DSM-5 in Chinese Nonclinical Adolescents

Abstract:To evaluate the factor structure, reliability, and validity of the Personality Inventory for DSM-5 (PID-5) in Chinese nonclinical adolescents, a total of 1,442 Chinese middle school youths ( M age = 14.85, girls = 52.4%) were recruited in the present study. All the participants completed the full-length 220-item PID-5. Some participants ( n = 1,003) were administered adolescents’ social adjustment as a criterion measure at the same time and 236 participants took part in longitudinal assessment of the PID-5 and adolescents’ social adjustment 6 months later. First, exploratory structural equation modeling analyses supported a six-factor structure of the PID-5 in our present sample. Second, Negative Affectivity, Detachment, Antagonistic, and Disinhibition domains had positive correlations with negative social adjustment, and negative correlations with positive social adjustment concurrently and longitudinally, with the exception of Constraint and Psychoticism. Third, Cronbach’s alpha for the PID-5 traits ranged from .57 to .91 in the full sample. The 6-month test–retest reliability by indexes of interclass correlation coefficient showed poor to good stability. As a whole, our findings provided preliminary evidence of the PID-5 as a reliable and valid measure of adolescents’ maladaptive personality traits in mainland China.

Abstract:A review of the literature on Chinese translations of Western self-report personality disorder assessment measures indicates the need to empirically evaluate the validity of assessing Western personality disorder constructs in Chinese language and culture. The current study presents a novel approach to examining this critical question in cross-cultural clinical assessment science and practice. One hundred and ninety-nine (199) Mandarin Chinese and English bilingual participants (92 males and 107 females) provided both English and Chinese self-report ratings on the Inventory of Interpersonal Problems – Short Circumplex (IIP-SC) and The Personality Diagnostic Questionnaire − 4+ (PDQ-4+). The similarities and differences in associations between Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders—5th edition (DSM-5) personality disorders and interpersonal problems assessed across languages were examined. The structural summary method (SSM) for circumplex data and a bootstrapping methodology were used to compute confidence intervals around SSM parameters to analyze and compare the interpersonal problems profiles for each personality disorder scale (e.g. narcissistic) derived from English-language and Chinese-language data. The current study found highly similar interpersonal profiles for personality disorder scales assessed in English and Chinese, suggesting Western DSM-5 personality disorder constructs generally emphasize the same interpersonal problems in Chinese language and culture. The method employed in this study also has implications for understanding whether translated measures capture the same personality constructs.

Abstract:Background: As the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders fifth version (DSM-5) was published, the Kiddie-Schedule for Affective Disorders and Schizophrenia-Present and Lifetime version (K-SADS-PL) was modified to adapt the new version (K-SADS-PL DSM-5). We translated it to Chinese (K-SADS-PL-C DSM-5) and described its reliability and validity. Methods: A total of 154 groups of 6 to 18-year-old children and their guardians were included. Trained interviewers interviewed subjects using the K-SADS-PL-C DSM-5. Interrater reliability was assessed by audio recording. Parent-reported scales, like child behavior checklist (CBCL), the Chinese version of Swan-son Nolan and Pelham, version IV scale-parent form (SNAP-IV), social responsiveness scale (SRS-1), and children-reported scales like depression self-rating scale for children (DSRSC) and the screen for child anxiety related emotional disorders (SCARED) were used to examine the validity of depressive disorder, ADHD, ASD, and ODD. Results: The K-SADS-PL-C DSM-5 had fair to excellent interrater (0.537-1.000) and test-retest (0.468-0.885) reliability of affective disorder and neurodevelopment disorder. The convergent validity of affective disorder and neurodevelopment disorder was good, and their divergent validity was acceptable. Limitations: i) Clinical questionnaires were insensitive in classifying disorders and had limitations in derived diagnoses. ii) Samples only came from clinical environment, iii) covered limited disease species, and iv) were small. Conclusion: The K-SADS-PL-C DSM-5 can support reliable and valid diagnoses for children with affect, neurodevelopmental, and behavioral disorders in China.

Abstract:The IPSAQ is a self-administered instrument designed to evaluate individuals’ attributional style (AS). The purpose of this study is to examine the psychometric properties of the Chinese version of the Internal, Personal and Situational Attributions Questionnaire (C-IPSAQ). We also investigate if patients with depression and patients with delusions exhibit attributional biases. The English version of IPSAQ was translated into Chinese and back-translated into English for use in this study. 200 normal control individuals, 47 depressed patients, and 41 delusional patients diagnosed with schizophrenia were recruited for this study. Psychometric properties of this questionnaire were evaluated. The IPSAQ was found to have good internal consistency as a scale. The mean Cronbach’s alpha of the six subscales was 0.697. The inter-rater reliability was also acceptable. The concurrent validity analysis revealed that the C-IPSAQ was significantly correlated with ASQ. The group-comparison analyses showed differences in attributional style between patients with depression and patients with delusions compared to normal controls. We confirmed the reliability and validity of the C-IPSAQ, and that the instrument can discriminate specific attributional biases between different patient populations. The C-IPSAQ is a valid instrument to assess attributional style in delusional and depressed patients.

Abstract:Background Work personality was found to relate to successful work adjustment, job readiness, work motivation and job maintenance. The revised developmental work personality scale (RDWPS) is a self-reported assessment to evaluate the work personality of the examinee which further psychometric study is required and needs to be applied to different culture. The aim of this study was to examine the theoretical structure, validity, and reliability of the traditional Chinese version of the RDWPS. Methods The subjects were 113 university students with no known physical or mental illness who aged between 19 and 22. Cluster analysis was used to examine the theoretical structure. Rasch analysis was applied to examine the psychometric properties. Results We dropped the unfit three items and found the 11 items of traditional Chinese version of the RDWPS was adequate to fit the theoretical construct. The results of the Rasch analysis showed that the 11 items with a three-point rating scale of the traditional Chinese version of the RDWPS had acceptable internal consistency (α = 0.76), moderate reliability, and met the criteria of unidimensionality. Conclusions The results of this study provided initial evidence that the traditional Chinese version of the RDWPS can be readily applied to research related to work behavior for those whose primary language is traditional Chinese, with adequate reliability and validity.

Abstract:Objective: This study aimed to develop a culturally adapted Chinese version of the Value-based Stigma Inventory (VASI) and to evaluate its psychometric properties, including reliability and validity, among the general Chinese population. Methods: This study is a cross-sectional study. Convenience sampling was used to recruit 708 general citizens from Shenyang City, Liaoning Province, China. The VASI's internal consistency, split-half reliability, and test-retest reliability were tested to assess the translated scale's reliability. Several validity tests were performed, including expert consultation, exploratory factor analysis, and confirmatory factor analysis. Data were analyzed using SPSS 25.0 (IBM Corp., Armonk, NY, United States) and AMOS 23.0 (IBM Corp., Armonk, NY, United States). Results: The Chinese version of the VASI showed good reliability, with a Cronbach's α value of 0.808, and the dimensions ranged from 0.812 to 0.850. Test-retest reliability showed good temporal stability with a value of 0.855, and the split-half reliability value was 0.845, indicating a high degree of consistency. The scale also demonstrated good content validity with a content validity index of 0.952. After conducting exploratory factor analysis, a five-factor structure was identified, including factors of self-realization, personal enrichment, reputation, meritocratic values, and security. In the confirmatory factor analysis, all recommended fit indicators were found to be within the acceptable range, including χ2/DF = 1.338, GFI = 0.960, AGFI = 0.940, RMSEA = 0.031, TLI = 0.985, CFI = 0.989, IFI = 0.989, PGFI = 0.640, and PNFI = 0.729. Conclusion: The Chinese version of the VASI is valid and reliable among the Chinese general public. The five-factor structured scale effectively assessed public stigma against mental illness, including the value orientations associated with personal stigma. Given the harsh and widespread public stigma against mental illness, the findings from the questionnaire may inform the development of future public health education programs. Public health education is needed to reduce the stigma of mental illness, increase public awareness of mental health issues, and mitigate the continued stigmatization of mental illness.

Abstract:This study examined the reliability and validity of PDQ4+ in a nation-wide college student sample.The results showed that,the test-retest cofficients of PDQ-4+ subscales ranged from 0.566 to 0.837(P<0.01),the split coefficients ranged from 0.738 to 0.844,and the Cronbach α coefficients ranged from 0.701 to 0.827.Exploratory factor analysis resulted in a three-factor solution,which conforms to the conceptual categorization of personality disorders in DSM-III-R.The PDQ-4+ subscales score showed a siginificant correlation with childhood abuse.The sensitivity and specificity of PDQ-4+ when used as a diagnostic scale in China needs further study.

Borderline Personality Disorder and Emotion Dysregulation

Abstract:Abstract Background Despite the introduction of dimensional conceptualisations of personality functioning in the latest classification systems, such as Criterion A of the Alternative Model of Personality Disorders in the DSM-5 , heterogeneous clinical presentation of personality pathology remains a challenge. Relatedly, the latent structure of personality pathology as assessed by the Semi-Structured Interview for Personality Functioning DSM-5 (STiP-5.1) has not yet been comprehensively examined in adolescents. Therefore, this study aimed to examine the latent structure of the STiP-5.1, and, based on those findings, to describe any unique clinical profiles that might emerge. Methods The final sample comprised 502 participants aged 11–18 years consecutively recruited from a specialised personality disorder outpatient service, as well as general day clinic and inpatient wards at the University Hospital University Hospital of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry and Psychotherapy, University Hospital Bern, Switzerland. Participants were assessed using the STiP-5.1, as well as a battery of other psychological measures by clinical psychologists or trained doctoral students. Variations of Factor Analysis, Latent Class Analysis and Factor Mixture Models (FMM) were applied to the STiP-5.1 to determine the most appropriate structure. Results The best fitting model was an FMM comprising four-classes and two factors (corresponding to self- and interpersonal-functioning). The classes differed in both overall severity of personality functioning impairment, and in their scores and clinical relevance on each element of the STiP-5.1. When compared to the overall sample, classes differed in their unique clinical presentation: class 1 had low impairment, class 2 had impairments primarily in self-functioning with high depressivity, class 3 had mixed levels of impairment with emerging problems in identity and empathy, and class 4 had severe overall personality functioning impairment. Conclusions A complex model incorporating both dimensional and categorical components most adequately describes the latent structure of the STiP-5.1 in our adolescent sample. We conclude that Criterion A provides clinically useful information beyond severity (as a dimensional continuum) alone, and that the hybrid model found for personality functioning in our sample warrants further attention. Findings can help to parse out clinical heterogeneity in personality pathology in adolescents, and help to inform early identification and intervention efforts.
