Abstract:Electrocatalytic urea synthesis is an emerging alternative technology to the traditional energy-intensive industrial urea synthesis protocol. Novel strategies are urgently needed to promote the electrocatalytic C–N coupling process and inhibit the side reactions. Here, we report a CuWO 4 catalyst with native bimetallic sites that achieves a high urea production rate (98.5 ± 3.2 μg h −1 mg −1 cat ) for the co-reduction of CO 2 and NO 3 − with a high Faradaic efficiency (70.1 ± 2.4%) at −0.2 V versus the reversible hydrogen electrode. Mechanistic studies demonstrated that the combination of stable intermediates of *NO 2 and *CO increases the probability of C–N coupling and reduces the potential barrier, resulting in high Faradaic efficiency and low overpotential. This study provides a new perspective on achieving efficient urea electrosynthesis by stabilizing the key reaction intermediates, which may guide the design of other electrochemical systems for high-value C–N bond-containing chemicals.

Abstract:Electrocatalytic C-N coupling for urea synthesis from carbon dioxide (CO2) and nitrate (NO3-) offers a sustainable alternative to the traditional Bosch-Meiser method. However, the complexity of intermediates in co-reduction hampers simultaneous improvement in urea yield and Faradaic efficiency (FE). Herein, we developed a Cu/Cu2O Mott-Schottky catalyst with nanoscale rectifying heterointerfaces through precise controllable in-situ electroreduction of Cu2O nanowires, achieving notable FE (32.6-47.0%) and substantial yields (6.08-30.4 μmol h-1 cm-2) across a broad range of ultralow applied potentials (0 to -0.3 V vs. RHE). Operando synchrotron radiation-Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (SR-FTIR) confirmed the formation of *CO intermediates and C-N bonds, subsequently density functional theory (DFT) calculations deciphered that the Cu/Cu2O rectifying heterointerface modulated *CO adsorption, significantly enhancing subsequent C-N coupling dynamics between *CO and *NOH intermediates. This work not only provides a groundbreaking and advanced pathway for C-N coupling, but also offers deep insights into copper-based heterointerface catalysts for urea synthesis.

Abstract:: Twenty pregnant diabetics with proliferative diabetic retinopathy are described. Out of a total of 37 eyes, 18 were coagulated during pregnancy. Coagulation treatment before pregnancy was performed in 14 eyes. The morphologic aspect of the fundi at the end of pregnancy was unchanged or even better in 31 of the 37 eyes, as compared with the time before pregnancy. The best results were obtained in eyes which were sufficiently coagulated before pregnancy. Visual acuity at the end of pregnancy in 35 eyes was much the same as during pregnancy. It is concluded that from a ophthalmological point of view the inindication for therapeutic abortion in diabetics with dication for therapeutic abortion in diabetics with proliferative diabetic retinopathy is no longer tenable.

Abstract:Electrocatalytic coupling of CO2 and NO3- to urea is a promising way to mitigate greenhouse gas emissions, reduce waste from industrial processes, and store renewable energy. However, the poor selectivity and activity limit its application due to the multistep process involving diverse reactants and reactions. Herein, we report the first work to design heterostructured Cu-Bi bimetallic catalysts for urea electrosynthesis. A high urea Faradaic efficiency (FE) of 23.5% with a production rate of 2180.3 μg h-1 mgcat-1 was achieved in H-cells, which surpassed most reported electrocatalysts in the literature. Moreover, the catalyst had a remarkable recycling stability. Experiments and density functional theory calculations demonstrated that introduction of moderate Bi induced the formation of the Bi-Cu/O-Bi/Cu2O heterostructure with abundant phase boundaries, which are beneficial for NO3-, CO2, and H2O activation and enhance C-N coupling and promote *HONCON intermediate formation. Moreover, favorable *HNCONH2 protonation and urea desorption processes were also validated, further explaining the reason for high activity and selectivity toward urea.

Abstract:Abstract Chemical C–N coupling from CO 2 and NO 3 – , driven by renewable electricity, toward urea synthesis is an appealing alternative for Bosch–Meiser urea production. However, the unmatched kinetics in CO 2 and NO 3 – reduction reactions and the complexity of C- and N-species involved in the co-reduction render the challenge of C–N coupling, leading to the low urea yield rate and Faradaic efficiency. Here, we report a single-atom copper-alloyed Pd catalyst (Pd 4 Cu 1 ) that can achieve highly efficient C–N coupling toward urea electrosynthesis. The reduction kinetics of CO 2 and NO 3 – is regulated and matched by steering Cu doping level and Pd 4 Cu 1 /FeNi(OH) 2 interface. Charge-polarized Pd δ– -Cu δ+ dual-sites stabilize the key *CO and *NH 2 intermediates to promote C–N coupling. The synthesized Pd 4 Cu 1 -FeNi(OH) 2 composite catalyst achieves a urea yield rate of 436.9 mmol g cat. –1 h –1 and Faradaic efficiency of 66.4%, as well as a long cycling stability of 1000 h. In-situ spectroscopic results and theoretical calculation reveal that atomically dispersed Cu in Pd lattice promotes the deep reduction of NO 3 – to *NH 2 , and the Pd-Cu dual-sites lower the energy barrier of the pivotal C–N coupling between *NH 2 and *CO.

Abstract:Abstract Simultaneous electrochemical reduction of nitrite and carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) under mild reaction conditions offers a new sustainable and low‐cost approach for urea synthesis. However, the development of urea electrosynthesis thus far still suffers from low selectivity due to the high energy barrier of * CO formation and the subsequent C─N coupling. In this work, a highly active dendritic Cu 99 Ni 1 catalyst is developed to enable the highly selective electrosynthesis of urea from co‐reduction of nitrite and CO 2 , reaching a urea Faradaic efficiency (FE) and production rate of 39.8% and 655.4 μg h −1 cm −2 , respectively, at −0.7 V versus reversible hydrogen electrode (RHE). In situ Fourier‐transform infrared spectroscopy (FT‐IR) measurements together with density functional theory (DFT) calculations demonstrate that Ni doping into Cu can significantly enhance the adsorption energetics of the key reaction intermediates and facilitate the C─N coupling. This work not only provides a new strategy to design efficient electrocatalysts for urea synthesis but also offers deep insights into the mechanism of C─N coupling during the co‐reduction of nitrite and CO 2 .

Abstract:The electrocatalytic co-reduction of small carbonaceous and nitrogenous molecules recently emerged as a promising strategy to mitigate carbon emissions, facilitate wastewater denitrification, and sustain urea synthesis. However, the development of highly efficient electrocatalysts to accelerate C–N coupling and multiple protonation steps remains challenging. Herein, inspired by the "strong metal–support interaction" (SMSI) concept, we designed novel catalysts, comprised of size-selected Cu clusters anchored on the two-dimensional molybdenum carbide MXene (Cu n /Mo 2 C), for urea production via the co-reduction of nitrate (NO 3 − ) and carbon dioxide (CO 2 ). Our density functional theory (DFT) computations revealed that these Cu clusters are strongly immobilized on the Mo 2 C substrate by forming planar structures, leading to considerable active sites. Notably, these Cu n /Mo 2 C catalysts demonstrate enhanced activity for urea synthesis through a one-step N–C–N coupling mechanism. This process involves the insertion of CO * into the intermediate, facilitated by electrostatic attractions between their nitrogen atoms. In particular, among the catalysts tested, Cu 4 /Mo 2 C exhibits superior performance, achieving urea production with a limiting potential of −0.36 V. Furthermore, the competing side reactions, such as CO reduction or release, NH 3 production, hydrogen evolution, and surface oxidation, are significantly suppressed, ensuring its high selectivity for urea synthesis. This work not only introduces a novel method for urea electro-synthesis via SMSI between metal clusters and substrate, but also suggests a strategy for synthesizing other organonitrogen compounds.

Abstract:Urea electrosynthesis under ambient conditions is emerging as a promising alternative to conventional synthetic protocols. However, the weak binding of reactants/intermediates on the catalyst surface induces multiple competing pathways, hindering efficient urea production. Herein, we report the synthesis of defective Co3O4 catalysts that integrate dual-functional sites for urea production from CO2 and nitrite. Regulating the reactant adsorption capacity on defective Co3O4 catalysts can efficiently control the competing reaction pathways. The urea yield rate of 3361 mg h(-1) g(cat)(-1) was achieved with a corresponding faradaic efficiency (FE) of 26.3% and 100% carbon selectivity at a potential of -0.7 V vs. the reversible hydrogen electrode. Both experimental and theoretical investigations reveal that the introduction of oxygen vacancies efficiently triggers the formation of well-matched adsorption/activation sites, optimizing the adsorption of reactants/intermediates while decreasing the C-N coupling reaction energy. This work offers new insights into the development of dual-functional catalysts based on non-noble transition metal oxides with oxygen vacancies, enabling the efficient electrosynthesis of essential C-N fine chemicals.

Abstract:The severity and prevalence of coronary and aortic atherosclerosis was studied in 174 subjects who died from violent causes in Mexico City. As in other geographic areas, fatty streaks were found early in life (12 years old). Fibrolipid plaques were present in the thoracic aorta at age 15 and at age 19 in the abdominal segment. Complicated lesions were detected in the aorta after age 25. Because of the obvious clinical significance we looked for severe aortic lesions in the abdominal bifurcation. The prevalence of severe lesions in the bifurcation was 0 between 15 to 24 years and raised to 23.3% in the 45-54 age group. A moderate correlation was found between the severity of coronary and aortic lesions. The discordance most often found was the presence of severe coronary lesions without severe aortic involvement.

Abstract:The development of a methodology for synthesizing value-added urea (CO(NH2)2) via a renewable electricity-driven C-N coupling reaction under mild conditions is highly anticipated. However, the complex catalytic active sites that act on the carbon and nitrogen species make the reaction mechanism unclear, resulting in a low efficiency of C-N coupling from the co-reduction of carbon dioxide (CO2) and nitrate (NO3-). Herein,we propose a novel tandem catalyst of Mo-PCN-222(Co), in which the Mo sites serve to facilitate nitrate reduction to the *NH2 intermediate, while the Co sites enhance CO2 reduction to carbonic oxide (CO), thus synergistically promoting C-N coupling. The synthesized Mo-PCN-222(Co) catalyst exhibited a noteworthy urea yield rate of 844.11mg h−1 g−1, alongside a corresponding Faradaic efficiency of 33.90% at −0.4 V vs. reversible hydrogen electrode (RHE). By combining in situ spectroscopic techniques with density functional theory calculations, we demonstrate that efficient C-N coupling is attributed to a tandem system in which the *NH2 and *CO intermediates produced by the Mo and Co active sites of Mo-PCN-222(Co) stabilize the formation of the *CONH2 intermediate. This study provides an effective avenue for the design and synthesis of tandem catalysts for electrocatalytic urea synthesis.

Abstract:Electrocatalytic reduction from nitrate (NO3-) and carbon dioxide (CO2) parades great prospects in substituting traditional process for urea synthesis, but challenges remain due to the arduous C-N coupling and multistage protonation. Unlike common design strategies, our study utilized synergistic effect between asymmetrical sites to reduce coupling barrier and promote urea production. Herein, we anchor dual single-atom Ru and Co on N-doped carbon for fixing the C/N group respectively and minimizing the generation energy for intermediates. As a result, the CoRuN6 electrocatalyst successfully restricts the parrel reaction (CO2/NO3-reduction) and affords a urea yield of 8.98 mmol h- 1g- 1 and a faradic efficiency (FE) of 25.31% at -0.6 V versus RHE. Our research provides novel insights into capitalizing on spatial regulation of active sites for efficient urea electrosynthesis.

Abstract:Renewable electricity‐powered nitrate/carbon dioxide co‐reduction reaction toward urea production paves an attractive alternative to industrial urea processes and offers a clean on‐site approach to closing the global nitrogen cycle. However, its large‐scale implantation is severely impeded by challenging C‐N coupling and requires electrocatalysts with high activity/selectivity. Here, cobalt‐nanoparticles anchored on carbon nanosheet (Co NPs@C) is proposed as a catalyst electrode to boost yield and Faradaic efficiency (FE) toward urea electrosynthesis with enhanced C‐N coupling. Such Co NPs@C renders superb urea‐producing activity with a high FE reaching 54.3% and a urea yield of 2217.5 μg h–1 mgcat.–1, much superior to the Co NPs and C nanosheet counterparts, and meanwhile shows strong stability. The Co NPs@C affords rich catalytically active sites, fast reactants diffusion, and sufficient catalytic surfaces‐electrolyte contacts with favored charge and ion transfer efficiencies. Abstract:Electrochemical co-reduction of CO 2 and nitrate provides a novel route to convert waste emissions into value-added chemicals such as urea. However, at the actual reaction interface, the insufficient supply of CO 2 reactants as well as the excessive coverage of proton and nitrate on the electrocatalyst surface usually lead to complex product distributions from individual hydrogen evolution or nitrate reduction as side reactions, instead of C-N coupling. Here, we rationally optimize this interface by polycation functionalization, forcing highly selective urea electrosynthesis. The abundant polyamine nodes within the functional layer are conductive to in situ capturing of CO 2 and filtering of proton, which pertinently control the reagent concentration to promote the selective C-N coupling and inhibit the undesired side reactions. When this tailored interface is coupled with efficient electrocatalyst with neighboring active sites, the proof-of-concept system delivers a maximum urea generation yield rate of 1254.2 μg h −1 mg −1 along with a Faradaic efficiency of 83.4 %, as well as outstanding N urea -selectivity of 91.3 % and C urea -selectivity of nearly 100 %, which is one of the most selective urea generation systems reported so far. This work provides new insights in regulating the catalysis microenvironment for the improvement of overall performance in electrochemical C-N coupling.

Abstract:Electrocatalytic urea synthesis is a promising alternative to the energy-intensive conventional industrial process. However, it lacks highly active and selective catalyst systems. Herein, we report a Cu/ZnO stacked tandem gas-diffusion electrode (GDE) for selective urea synthesis from electrocatalytic CO2 and nitrate reduction reactions. The ZnO catalyst layer (CL) segment at the inlet provides a high CO concentration to the downstream Cu CL segment, promoting the conversion of NO3 – to *NH2. The CO-mediated NH2 formation accelerates the C–N coupling rate for urea synthesis. As a result, the stacked GDE with an optimal ZnO/Cu CL area ratio achieves a high Faradaic efficiency of 37.4% and a high yield of 3.2 μmol h–1 cm–2 for urea at −0.3 V vs RHE under ambient conditions. This work expands the application of tandem electrodes and realizes the cascade C–N coupling reaction.

Abstract:The electrochemical co‐reduction of CO2 and NO3− to urea is an alternative to traditional urea synthesis. However, the significant difference in the energy barriers and reaction rates for CO2 and NO3− reduction restricts the efficiency of the CN coupling. Herein, we report a strategy to coordinate the CN coupling intermediates by unilaterally increasing the efficiency of CO2 reduction to match that of facile NO3− reduction. We demonstrate this strategy using an electrochemical reaction system consisting of a Cu2O‐loaded ordered gas‐diffusion electrode, which offers a high urea yield rate of 1373.5 μg h−1 mgcat.−1 at a low applied potential of −0.6 V versus RHE. This work not only provides a feasible strategy to coordinate the reductive coupling of CO2 and NO3−, but also brings new insight into the reaction mechanism of urea electrosynthesis.

Abstract:Three new species of the genus BrevitobriusTsalolikhin, 1981 are described. Brevitobrilus glandulatus n. sp. is characterized by conspicuous sphincter between pars dilatata and uterus; two pairs of vaginal glands; spicules having elliptical capitula with small proximal stiffening piece; proximally-arcuate gubernaculum; S3 and S4 smaller than other supplements; S6 out of spicular range and 57-60 micropapillae. Brevitobrilus dimorphicus n. sp. is diagnosed by sexual dimorphism in labial sensilla and amphids; thick-walled rectum with a diverticulum protruding into intestinal lumen and males with boat-shaped spicules and S6 occasionally slightly smaller than other supplements. Brevitobrilus allahabadensis n. sp. possesses large amphids of 28-33% of corresponding labial diameter in both sexes; vagina and uterus with muscular, plicate walls; well developed sphincter between vas deferens and ejaculatory duct; capitulate spicules with sloping ventral and angular dorsal walls; S3, S4 and S6 smaller than other supplements, S6 close to cloaca and 28-37 micropapillae. The relationships of the species of genus Brevitobrilus have been assessed using morphological characters subjected to parsimony and a non cladistic key to identification of species is given.

Herein, self-supported core-shell Cu@Zn nanowires are constructed through an electroreduction method and exhibit superior performance toward urea electrosynthesis via CO2 and NO3- contaminants as feedstocks. Both 1H NMR spectra and liquid chromatography identify urea production. The optimized urea yield rate and Faradaic efficiency over Cu@Zn can reach 7.29 μmol cm-2 h-1 and 9.28% at -1.02 V vs RHE, respectively. The reaction pathway is revealed based on the intermediates detected through in situ attenuated total reflection Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and online differential electrochemical mass spectrometry. The combined results of theoretical calculations and experiments prove that the electron transfer from the Zn shell to the Cu core can not only facilitate the formation of *CO and *NH2 intermediates but also promote the coupling of these intermediates to form C-N bonds, leading to a high faradaic efficiency and yield of the urea product.

Abstract:Electrocatalytic conversion is a promising technology for storing renewable electricity in the chemical form. Substantial efforts have been made on the multicarbon feedstock production, while little is known about producing nitrogen-containing chemicals like urea via C–N coupling. Here, we elucidate the possible urea production on metals through coreduction of nitric oxide (NO) and carbon oxide (CO). Based on adsorption energies calculated by density functional theory (DFT), we find that Cu is able to bind both *NO and *CO while not binding *H. During NO + CO coreduction, we identify two kinetically and thermodynamically possible C–N couplings via *CO + *N and *CONH + *N, and further hydrogenation leads to urea formation. A 2-D activity heatmap has been constructed for describing nitrogen conversion to urea. This work provides a clear example of using computational simulations to predict selective and active materials for urea production.

Abstract:Electrochemical C-N coupling reaction based on carbon dioxide and nitrate have been emerged as a new ''green synthetic strategy'' for the synthesis of urea, but the catalytic efficiency is seriously restricted by the inherent scaling relations of adsorption energies of the active sites, the improvement of catalytic activity is frequently accompanied by the decrease in selectivity. Herein, a doping engineering strategy was proposed to break the scaling relationship of intermediate binding and minimize the kinetic barrier of C-N coupling. A thus designed SrCo0.39Ru0.61O3-δ catalyst achieves a urea yield rate of 1522 μg h-1 mgcat.-1 and faradic efficiency of 34.1% at -0.7 V versus reversible hydrogen electrode. A series of characterizations revealed that Co doping not only induces lattice distortion but also creates rich oxygen vacancies (OV) in the SrRuO3. The oxygen vacancies weaken the adsorption of *CO and *NH2 intermediates on the Co and Ru sites respectively, and the strain effects over the Co-Ru dual sites promoting the occurrence of C-N coupling of the two monomers instead of selective hydrogenating to form by-products. This work presents an insight into molecular coupling reactions towards urea synthesis via the doping engineering on SrRuO3.
