Abstract:Porous cross-linked polymers containing pendant triazole groups were synthesized from glycidyl methacrylate (GMA) in the presence of divinylbenzene via high internal phase emulsion (HIPE) templating method followed by functionalization with sodium 3-amino-1,2,4-triazole (ATANa). They were characterized with FTIR, SEM, BET, and mercury intrusion and assessed as CO2 adsorbents. With interconnected hierarchical porous structure and abundant triazole groups which absorbed CO2 chemically in 1:1 stoichiometry, the adsorbents exhibited high CO2 adsorption capacity (3.6 mmol g(1), at 25 degrees C and 1 atm) and rate, and good CO2/N-2 selectivity (similar to 30). The adsorbents also displayed easy CO2 desorption with medium desorption heat (58 kJ/mol CO2), acceptable moisture endurance, and excellent recyclability. The results suggest that these functionalized porous polymers are potential adsorbents for CO2 capture

Abstract:Capturing CO2 and subsequently converting into valuable chemicals has attracted extensive attention. Herein, a series of biomass-based N-rich porous carbon materials with high specific surface area and pore volume were prepared using biomass waste soybean dregs as precursors. The nitrogen content was up to 4% with different forms in the carbon skeleton such as pyridine-N, pyrrole-N. The synergistic effect of ultra-micropore (pore size < 0.7 nm) and N-containing groups renders the materials exhibit a high CO2 adsorption capacity, reaching 6.3 and 3.6 mmol g-1 at 0 oC and 25 oC under atmosphere pressure respectively. In addition, the sufficient interaction between N-containing groups and CO 2 was demonstrated by solid state NMR, the captured CO 2 was activated in the form of carbamate possibly, which is conducive to subsequent conversion. Therefore, the supported catalyst with the as-synthetic porous carbon material as the carrier and Zn II as catalytic sites was prepared and successfully applied for carboxylative cyclization of propargylic amine with CO 2 to afford the 3-benzyl-5-methyleneoxazolidin-2-one. The results validate CO 2 capture and in situ conversion work effectively to produce highly value-added chemicals. In this process, the captured CO 2 can be activated and fixed into chemicals in mild conditions. More importantly, the energy consumption in CO 2 desorption and adsorbent regeneration can be avoided. The valorization of both solid waste and CO 2 to valuable chemicals provides an elegant strategy of killing three birds with one stone.

Novel nitrogen-enriched activated carbon with tunable microporosity from Agricultural and Plastic Waste for CO 2 adsorption

Abstract:Low-cost nitrogen-enriched activated carbons (PNACs) with high microporosity were prepared by a simple one-step activation doping process using KOH as a chemical activator and melamine formaldehyde (MF) as a nitrogen source. These PNACs have shown great potential as effective CO 2 adsorbents. The resulting PNACs were mainly microporous structure, with surface areas ranging from 736 to 2144 m 2 /g and total pore volumes ranging from 0.565 to 1.366 cm 3 /g. The CO 2 adsorption capacities of PNACs were in the range of 2.353 to 6.068 mmol/g and 1.59 to 4.131 mmol/g at 0 °C and 25 °C under 1 bar, respectively. Additionally, the CO 2 /N 2 selectivity of the PNACs ranges from 11.15 to 26.86 at a CO 2 partial pressure of 0.1 bar. The experimental isotherm data were analyzed using various equations and the Toth isotherm equation was found to be the most accurate mathematical model to describe the CO 2 adsorption isotherm of the activated carbon. This result further confirms that PNACs have a non-homogeneous pore structure. Additionally, the CO 2 /N 2 selectivity of the PNACs ranges from 11.15 to 26.86 at a CO 2 partial pressure of 0.1 bar. The exceptional CO 2 adsorption properties can be attributed to the high microporosity and nitrogen content of the PNACs. The relationship between the physicochemical properties and CO 2 adsorption performance of the activated carbon was further investigated by relevance analysis. At 0 °C and 1 bar, it was observed that the pore structure played a predominant role in the CO 2 adsorption process of PNACs. During this condition, PNACs mainly exhibited physical adsorption, which was primarily governed by the microporous filling mechanism. However, at 25 °C and 1 bar, both microporosity and nitrogen content contribute equally to the CO 2 adsorption effect. This observation confirms that the pore structure and nitrogen functional groups work synergistically to influence the CO 2 adsorption performance of PNACs. The adsorption mechanism of PNACs can be described as physical adsorption, driven by the cooperation between nitrogen functional groups and the filling of micropores. This innovative one-step activation doping process successfully converts agricultural and plastic waste into sustainable and high-performance CO 2 adsorbents. It provides new insights for mitigating the greenhouse effect and addressing the issue of plastic pollution.

Abstract:Conversion of plastic waste into porous carbon for CO 2 capture is an attractive approach to solve the carbon emission and plastic pollution problems, simultaneously. However, the previous studies are limited to the utilization of single PET plastic. The conversion of mixed plastic waste (MPW), which is of more practical significance, is seldom reported. In this study, mixed plastic waste was converted into porous carbon materials for CO 2 capture through cascading autogenic pressure carbonization (APC) and chemical activation. The carbon yield of 56% was achieved through APC of MPW. The activator (KOH) dosage had significant effects on the structure and properties of the prepared porous carbons. Porous carbon prepared with KOH/C ratio of 4 had the largest micropore area and the maximum CO 2 adsorption was 2.7 mmol g −1 at 298 K and 1 bar. The experimental data were well fitted to the pesudo first-order kinetic model. The MPW derived porous carbon exhibited not only high CO 2 uptake capacity, but also fast adsorption rate, good selectivity of CO 2 over N 2 and good cyclic stability, which could be regarded as a promising adsorbent for CO 2 adsorption.

Abstract:Green and low-cost biomass-based porous carbon adsorbents have a good prospect for the removal of some environmental pollutants. Here, sodium lignosulphonate, chitosan, and activator were firstly combined into wet gel microbeads through in situ self-assembly method, and then derived the novel porous carbon adsorption materials (LC-Cs) by freeze-drying and one-step activation carbonization. The results showed that LC-Cs had large specific surface areas (892.4∼1307.8 m 2 /g), high microporosity (87.4∼89.2%), and rich nitrogen content (3.01∼4.92%), and these structural parameters showed good linear dependence with the dosage ratio of lignin to chitosan. Next, LC-Cs carbon showed efficient CO 2 capture (173.9–215.2 mg/g) and high CO 2 /N 2 selectivity (up to IAST:145.9, Henry's law: 23.5), specially, the relationships between the CO 2 capture and the structural parameters were investigated in detail, and also performed DFT calculation. In addition, LC-C22 had the maximum adsorption capacity of p-nitrophenol (PNP) as 592.8 mg/g, and the adsorption isotherms and kinetic study indicated that they belonged to the multilayer adsorption on the heterogeneous surfaces, and the chemical adsorption played the dominated roles, and then further studied the adsorption mechanism by characterization techniques. This work provided a green and facile strategy for preparing structurally controllable N-doped porous carbon materials, as well as offered good potential adsorbents for PNP removal and CO 2 capture.

Enhanced CO2 capturing over ultra-microporous carbon with nitrogen-active species prepared using one-step carbonization of polybenzoxazine for a sustainable environment

Abstract:Nitrogen-enriched porous carbon has been a promising material for CO2 capture in the recent decades. To enhance the performance of CO2 adsorption, both an N-active site and the textural properties are crucial determinants. Herein, ultra-microporous carbon with N-active species was prepared using two synthesis procedures: 1) one-step carbonization of a polybenzoxazine (PBZ) precursor at 800 °C, and 2) the CO2 activation process at 900 °C. The activated porous carbon had the higher specific surface area (943 m2/g) and a total pore volume (0.51 cm3/g) compared to un-activated porous carbon (335 m2/g and 0.19 cm3/g, respectively). In addition, the presence of N-active species such as pyridine-N, secondary-N, pyridone-N, and oxide-N in the carbon structures could be clearly observed in the high-resolution XPS spectra. The CO2 adsorption measurement was performed at 30 and 50 °C under a wide range of pressures (1-7 bar). The maximum amount of CO2 uptake was ca. 3.59 mmol/g for the activated porous carbon operated at 30 °C and a CO2 pressure of 7 bar, which was due to the high specific surface area and the large micropore volume. Specifically, carbon with a 3D interconnected pore structure, derived from the sol-gel process of the PBZ precursor, exhibited good structural stability and consequently led to better absorption capability under the high atmospheric pressure of CO2. The enhanced CO2 adsorption capability for the as-prepared porous carbon was based on two mechanisms: physisorption as a result of textural properties and chemisorption as a result of the acid-base interaction between the basic N functionality and the acidic CO2 gas. All results suggested that ultra-microporous carbon with N-active species prepared from polybenzoxazine is a promising adsorbent for CO2 capture and storage, which can be used at a wide range of pressures and in many applications e.g. flue gas adsorption and natural gas production.
High-value utilization of lignin to prepare N,O-codoped porous carbon as a high-performance adsorbent for carbon dioxide capture

Abstract:The concern for environmental sustainability has increased the interest in biomass materials for the synthesis of porous carbon, especially as an effective alternative and multifunctional adsorbent in the field of adsorption of a wide range of pollutants and carbon dioxide. Lignin has high carbon content, abundant aromatic rings and condensation bonds, which make it suitable as a precursor for carbon-containing materials. In this study, lignin was firstly precarbonized to achieve its degradation and efficient conversion, and then chemically activated by KOH to prepare a low-cost porous carbon materials with finely developed microporous structure, which showed excellent gas adsorption performance of 3.98 and 5.82 mmol/g at 1 bar, 298 K and 273 K, respectively. In addition to this, we have also investigated the dynamic sorption properties of the samples on CO 2 . The original lignin contains N,O functional groups that can be doped to the surface of the porous carbon, and previous studies have confirmed that the porosity and functional groups on the surface of the carbon material play a positive role in improving the defective and adsorption properties of the material. Our work provided a promising strategy for valorization of lignin as a precursor for producing advanced carbon materials.

Abstract:The effective capture of waste and diluted CO2 by porous carbon materials is extremely challenging. Herein, a facile one-step strategy was developed to prepare activated N/O-rich multilayer ultramicropores carbon composite materials for capturing waste and diluted CO2 effectively by directly carbonizing urea and d-glucose with a novel non-corrosive and non-toxic chemical activator of potassium acetate. Especially, the diluted CO2 adsorptive capacity of the porous carbon material reached 1.38 mmol/g and 0.57 mmol/g at 0.15 bar and 0.05 bar (0 °C) respectively. Meanwhile, the retention time up to 85 min in the diluted CO2 breakthrough experiment further confirms the outstanding adsorptive property of the materials, implying their potential for CO2/N2 separation in the industrial field.

Abstract:Biomass-based adsorbents are considered to have great potential for CO2 capture due to their low cost, high efficiency and exceptional sustainability. The aim of this work is to design a simple method for preparing biomass-based adsorbents with abundant active sites and large numbers of narrow micropores, so as to enhance CO2 capture performance. Herein, N, S co-doped porous carbon (NSPC) was created utilizing walnut shell-based microporous carbon (WSMC) as the main framework and thiourea as N/S dopant through physical grinding and post-treatment process at a moderate temperature without any other reagents and steps. By altering the post-treatment parameters, a series of porous carbons with varying physico-chemical properties were prepared to discuss the roles of microporosity and N/S functional groups in CO2 adsorption. NSPC with narrow micropore volume of 0.74 cm3 g-1, N content of 4.89 % and S contents of 0.71 % demonstrated the highest CO2 adsorption capacity of 7.26 (0 °C) and 5.51 mmol g-1 (25 °C) at 1 bar. Meanwhile, a good selectivity of binary gas mixture CO2/N2 (15/85) of 29.72 and outstanding recyclability after ten cycles of almost 100 % adsorption capacity retention were achieved. The proposed post-treatment method was beneficial in maintaining the narrow micropores and forming N/S active sites, which together improve the CO2 adsorption performance of NSPC. The novel NSPC displays amazing CO2 adsorption characteristics, and the practical, affordable synthetic approach exhibits significant potential to produce highly effective CO2 adsorbents on a broad scale.

Abstract:Selective adsorption and converting CO 2 upon efficient solid-based adsorbents is critical for net-zero accomplishment. Herein, we develop an advisable strategy to prepare nitrogen-enriched porous carbons using the macadamia nutshell (MNS) as a carbon precursor, KOH as the activator and melamine as the nitrogen agent, respectively. The as-prepared porous carbons exhibit an enhanced specific surface area of 1731 m 2 /g and high microporosity with abundant nitrogen functional groups and structural defects. The CO 2 uptake of 6.61 and 4.35 mmol g −1 were achieved at 0 and 25 °C, respectively, under 1 bar. More importantly, these biomass-based nitrogen-doped carbons possess various CO 2 adsorption merits such as quick adsorption kinetics, high CO 2 /N 2 selectivity, medium heat of adsorption, outstanding uninterrupted recyclability and good dynamic CO 2 capture capacity. The present study provides an advanced protocol to design nitrogen-doped porous Carbon via a facile route toward the capture of CO 2 , which offers excellent progress in sustainable chemistry and engineering.

One-Pot Synthesis of Melamine Formaldehyde Resin-Derived N-Doped Porous Carbon for CO2 Capture Application

Abstract:The design and synthesis of porous carbons for CO2 adsorption have attracted tremendous interest owing to the ever-soaring concerns regarding climate change and global warming. Herein, for the first time, nitrogen-rich porous carbon was prepared with chemical activation (KOH) of commercial melamine formaldehyde resin (MF) in a single step. It has been shown that the porosity parameters of the as-prepared carbons were successfully tuned by controlling the activating temperature and adjusting the amount of KOH. Thus, as-prepared N-rich porous carbon shows a large surface area of 1658 m2/g and a high N content of 16.07 wt%. Benefiting from the unique physical and textural features, the optimal sample depicted a CO2 uptake of up to 4.95 and 3.30 mmol/g at 0 and 25 °C under 1 bar of pressure. More importantly, as-prepared adsorbents show great CO2 selectivity over N2 and outstanding recyclability, which was prominently important for CO2 capture from the flue gases in practical application. An in-depth analysis illustrated that the synergetic effect of textural properties and surface nitrogen decoration mainly determined the CO2 capture performance. However, the textural properties of carbons play a more important role than surface functionalities in deciding CO2 uptake. In view of cost-effective synthesis, outstanding textural activity, and the high adsorption capacity together with good selectivity, this advanced approach becomes valid and convenient in fabricating a unique highly efficient N-rich carbon adsorbent for CO2 uptake and separation from flue gases.

Abstract:Excessive emission of greenhouse gases has caused global warming and been seriously damaging the ecological environment. Adsorption technology is one of the most powerful methods widely used for carbon capture. However, the currently available rigid porous adsorbents are all insoluble, the regeneration of which once blocked is a quandary. In this study, we synthesized a soluble polymeric adsorbent of intrinsic microporosity (AO-PIM-1) for carbon dioxide (CO2) capture. The adsorbent of AO-PIM-1, an amidoxime functionalized PIM-1, possesses a high-specific surface area of 503 m2/g and a strong affinity for CO2 with the heat of adsorption of 30.6 kJ/mol. It exhibits high CO2 adsorption capacity and CO2/N2 selectivity evidenced by computational calculations and experimental breakthrough experiments. More importantly, the microporous AO-PIM-1 is well soluble in common organic solvents like DMF, DMSO, and DMAc, but insoluble in methanol, which allows the regeneration, once being fouled, with a solvent dissolution-separation purification-nonsolvent-induced precipitation (DSP) method.

The results showed that the prepared PDA@HCP(1:1)‐850 exhibited a high CO2 adsorption capacity due to abundant micropores (0.6762 cm3/g), a high specific surface area (1220.8 m2/g), and moderate surface nitrogen content (2.75%). Notably, PDA@HCP(1:1)‐850 exhibited the highest CO2 uptake of 6.46 mmol/g at 0 °C and 101 kPa. Critically, these N‐doped porous carbons can also be used as catalysts for the reaction of CO2 with epichlorohydrin to form chloropropylene carbonate, with chloropropylene carbonate yielding up to 64% and selectivity of the reaction reaching 94%. As a result, these N‐doped porous carbons could serve as potential candidates for CO2 capture and conversion due to their high reactivity, excellent CO2 uptake, and good catalytic performance.

Abstract:In this paper, low-cost activated carbons (ACs) using apple tree pruning waste and waste polyethylene terephthalate (PET) plastic bottles as precursors were prepared by a two-step chemical activation, and the synergistic mechanism between the two precursors during carbonization was investigated. Response surface methodology (RSM) was employed to analyze the impact of PET ratio and carbonization conditions (carbonization temperature, heating rate) on the pore structure and CO 2 adsorption performance of the activated carbon. The results demonstrate that the PET ratio and carbonization conditions significantly influence the pore structure and CO 2 adsorption performance of the activated carbon. By optimizing the preparation conditions, the RSM-predicted CO 2 uptake at 1 bar and 25 °C closely matches the experimental value, both reaching 4.49 mmol/g. Additionally, at 1 bar and 0 °C, the CO 2 uptake of the activated carbon was found to be 7.03 mmol/g. The activated carbon AC 0.2-8-515 exhibits exceptional characteristics, including a highly developed specific surface area of 1808 m 2 /g and a significant microporous volume of 0.67 cm 3 /g. It also demonstrates good selectivity for CO 2 /N 2 (13.44) and exhibits ease of regeneration with excellent cycling stability even after multiple cycles. The isotherm data obtained from experimental measurements are fitted using Langmuir, Freundlich, and Toth isotherm equations. Among these models, the Toth isotherm equation provides the best fit to the data. Furthermore, the co-pyrolysis process contributes to an increased yield of PET pyrolysis fixed carbon. This study presents a novel solution to address the issues of carbon dioxide capture and white pollution, offering promising prospects for future development.

Abstract:A ternary copolymerized poly(ionic liquid) of bis-imidazolium-based ionic liquid and crosslinking agents (divinylbenzene (DVB), N, N'-methylene bisacrylamide (MBA)) was rationally designed as versatile precursor to synthesize nitrogen-doped porous carbons by self-templating method for efficient CO2 separation. The ionic liquid monomer and MBA could serve as nitrogen sources to enhance the surface polarity through in-situ doping, while the self-decomposed functional groups (especially-CONH-) along with halogen anions could promote the formation of pores during carbonization. By adjusting the molar ratio of ionic liquid to DVB and MBA, carbonization temperature and activator dosage (KOH), the obtained CVDM0.5-700 (0.5:1:1, 700 C, 2 mol/L) owned a considerable specific surface area (1835 m(2)/g), plentiful (ultra)micropores and moderate nitrogen content (3.05 wt%). The strong van der Waals force arising from ultra-micropores (d < 0.7 nm) within a narrow distribution improved the ability to capture CO2 and the abundant CO2-philic N species further strengthened the binding interactions. Consequently, CVDM0.5-700 was endowed with satisfactory CO2 uptake capacity (4.11 mmol/g), desirable CO2/N-2 (15%/85%) adsorption selectivity (23.6) and excellent cyclic stability at 25 ? and normal pressure. This work provided a new pathway for the modulated fabrication of heteroatoms-doped porous carbon materials by precise design of poly(ionic liquid)-based precursors for appealing applications.

Abstract:Based on efficiency and environmental concerns, the development of porous carbon from waste and biomass materials has attracted extensive attention as a novel approach. In this study, poplar sawdust was an inexpensive carbon precursor, sulfur-containing waste liquid (SCWL) was used as a modifier to turn waste into treasure, and potassium oxalate (K2C2O4) was a mild activator, successfully prepared N, S, O co-doped new porous activated carbon with excellent CO2 capture performance. The heteroatom doping and pore structure can be controlled by using SCWL and K2C2O4, and adjusting the activation temperature. The best sample (PCSK-2-3-800) prepared with SCWL and K2C2O4 showed excellent CO2 adsorption performance, reaching 3.82 and 5.61 mmol/g under normal pressure at 25 and 0 °C, respectively. This is attributed to the synergy of porous structure and surface chemistry. The pore structure parameter results showed that K2C2O4 promotes the development of activated carbon pore structure. The specific surface area, micropore volume and narrow micropore volume of PCSK-2-3-800 are 1418 m2/g, 0.55 cm3/g and 0.43 mL/g, respectively. The characterization results of FTIR and XPS showed that the addition of SCWL can successfully introduce heteroatoms into the carbon skeleton, and form CO2-philic active sites on the surface of the porous carbon. Both aspects promoted the adsorption of CO2. In addition, the PCSK-2-3-800 sample has a moderate adsorption heat of 27.13 kJ/mmol, good adsorption selectivity of CO2 and N2 is 13, and excellent recyclability, which is very promising for CO2 separation or storage. This paper develops a sustainable scheme for the first-time using biomass and SCWL to develop a new solid carbon adsorbent, which provides useful information and inspiration for capturing CO2.

Abstract:Ordered mesoporous lignin carbons with large mesopore sizes and mesopore volumes were synthesized using lignin as a renewable and sustainable polymeric precursor and siliceous mesostructured cellular foam as a template in a solvothermal process. The prepared lignin carbon materials, which are present in arrays of microspheres, showed a quasi-spherical porous morphology and were highly characterized by the rarely seen dominance of a three-dimensional large mesopore system that had a narrow pore size distribution centered at 20–25 nm with high surface areas of up to 960 m 2 g −1 and mesopore volumes of up to 1.50 cm 3 g −1 , respectively. The results also showed that the large-pore mesoporous framework could be readily tuned by varying the carbonization/activation temperature and the silica-to-lignin ratio by mass. Applying the as-prepared carbon materials as porous support for preparing CO 2 adsorbent materials demonstrated that the large-pore mesostructured carbon can effectively accommodate a large uploading capacity of polyamines, giving rise to a high CO 2 uptake capacity of 129.9 mg-CO 2 /g-adsorbent or 2.95 mmol-CO 2 /g-adsorbent with favorable adsorption kinetics at 75 °C and a CO 2 partial pressure of 0.15 bar, which is among the best sorbents ever reported under similar adsorption conditions.

Abstract:The one-step synthesis method of nitrogen doped microporous carbon monoliths derived from biomass with high-efficiency is developed using a novel ammonia (NH3)-assisted activation process, where NH3 serves as both activating agent and nitrogen source. Both pore forming and nitrogen doping simultaneously proceed during the process, obviously superior to conventional chemical activation. The as-prepared nitrogen-doped active carbons exhibit rich micropores with high surface area and high nitrogen content. Synergetic effects of its high surface area, microporous structure and high nitrogen content, especially rich nitrogen-containing groups for effective CO2 capture (i.e., phenyl amine and pyridine-nitrogen) lead to superior CO2/N2 selectivity up to 82, which is the highest among known nanoporous carbons. In addition, the resulting nitrogen-doped active carbons can be easily regenerated under mild conditions. Considering the outstanding CO2 capture performance, low production cost, simple synthesis procedure and easy scalability, the resulting nitrogen-doped microporous carbon monoliths are promising candidates for selective capture of CO2 in industrial applications.
