Effect of Perioperative Physical Activity on Skeletal Muscle Loss 6 Months After Esophageal Cancer Surgery

Abstract:Background/aim: Sarcopenia contributes to a poor prognosis in patients with esophageal cancer; thus, any clinical support that prevents loss of skeletal muscle mass preoperatively and postoperatively should be actively investigated. This study aimed to evaluate physical activity during the perioperative period and its impact on postoperative skeletal muscle mass. Patients and methods: Sixty-two patients who underwent esophagostomy at the Hamamatsu University School of Medicine between 2019 and 2023 were evaluated. The physical activity (measured by the step count) of patients scheduled for esophagectomy was assessed preoperatively using a fitness tracker. The percentage change in skeletal muscle mass index (SMI) was calculated preoperatively and 6 months postoperatively. Factors associated with decreased SMI 6 months after esophagectomy were analyzed using multivariate analysis. Results: The median decrease in SMI was -6.2%. Multivariate analysis revealed that factors associated with the reduction of SMI were age >69 years [odds ratio (OR)=7.21, 95% confidence interval (CI)=1.36-38.19, p=0.020], preoperative step count <7,800 steps/day (OR=5.17, 95% CI=1.38-19.33, p=0.015), and postoperative step count <2,400 steps/day (OR=3.55, 95% CI=1.01-12.45, p=0.048). Conclusion: A low perioperative step count and older age were significant risk factors for skeletal muscle loss in patients with esophageal cancer undergoing surgery. For patients with a low number of steps in the perioperative period or for older patients, interventions to increase the number of steps may prevent skeletal muscle loss.
Preoperative physical activity predicts postoperative functional recovery in gastrointestinal cancer patients

Abstract:The present study aimed to investigate the association between preoperative physical activity (PA) and postoperative functional recovery in gastrointestinal cancer patients.In this prospective study, we included 101 patients who underwent colorectal or gastric cancer surgery. Primary outcome was 6-minute walk distance (6MWD) decline ratio ((postoperative 6MWD value – preoperative 6MWD value)/preoperative 6MWD value × 100 (%)), which was determined as postoperative functional recovery. Patients were divided into two groups according to the median of 6MWD decline ratio: above the median (non-decline group) and below the median (decline group). The International Physical Activity Questionnaire (IPAQ-SV) (the usual seven-day short version) was used to assess preoperative PA and sedentary time. Multivariate logistic regression analysis was performed to identify predictive factors of postoperative functional recovery.Preoperative PA (odds ratio (OR): 3.812; 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.326–10.956; p = 0.01), 6MWD (OR: 1.006; 95% CI: 1.002–1.011; p < 0.01), C-reactive protein (OR: 4.138; 95% CI: 1.383–12.377; p = 0.01), and combined resection (OR: 3.425; 95% CI: 1.101–10.649; p = 0.03) were associated with postoperative functional recovery.Preoperative PA is a predictor of postoperative functional recovery in patients who undergoing gastrointestinal cancer surgery.The association between preoperative physical activity (PA) and postoperative functional recovery has been unclear in gastrointestinal cancer patients.We indicated that preoperative PA predicts postoperative functional recovery.Patients who low preoperative PA need to be monitored carefully in the postoperative course.Patients with low preoperative PA may need enhanced postoperative rehabilitation to reduce postoperative functional decline.

Preoperative physiotherapy for improving the reserve capacity in a patient with esophageal cancer and frailty: A case report

Abstract:Introduction: Frailty is significantly correlated with a higher incidence of medical complications during hospitalization after esophagectomy. As frailty is thought to be a reversible condition, improving the reserve capacity through preoperative physical therapy is expected to reduce the risk of postoperative pulmonary complications (PPCs). Herein, we report our experience with preoperative physical therapy in a patient with esophageal cancer who was considered to have inadequate fitness for surgery owing to poor physical performance. Case presentation: A 72-year-old man (height: 169.5 cm, weight: 54.7 kg, body mass index: 18.9 kg/m2) with esophagogastric junction tumors (cStage IIIA) was hospitalized and scheduled to undergo surgery based on preoperative screening. He was categorized as frail according to the revised Japanese version of the Cardiovascular Health Study criteria and the Mini Nutritional Assessment Short-Form indicated severe malnutrition. We focused on physical therapy to improve exercise tolerance and prevent PPCs and devised a short-term intensive physical therapy program comprising minimal exercises that the patient could perform efficiently. The program consisted of only inspiratory muscle training and aerobic exercises. His maximal inspiratory pressure (MIP) and 6-min walking distance improved by 30 cm H2O and 145 m, respectively, on the day before surgery compared with those on day 8. The percentage predicted value of the MIP improved from 56.6% at the start of physical therapy to 102.9% on the day before surgery. On day 43, the patient underwent subtotal esophagectomy and was able to ambulate on postoperative day 5 without respiratory complications. Conclusion: We conducted a short-term, intensive, and minimal preoperative physical therapy program for a patient with esophageal cancer who had physical frailty. Preoperative physical therapy to increase the reserve capacity may result in a favorable postoperative course even in patients with physical frailty.

Abstract:Abstract Background Improvement of the preoperative inflammation, nutrition, and other systemic conditions may reduce surgical complications and improve the prognosis of cancer. The usefulness of preoperative nutritional therapy and rehabilitation has recently been discussed. We created a novel program of preoperative rehabilitation and nutritional support to improve postoperative outcomes. We examined the nutritional status and blood electrolyte predisposition before and after this program. Methods Thirty five patients who underwent esophagectomy for esophageal cancer. These patients performed muscle strengthening exercise and received jelly beverage containing branched-chain amino acids immediately after rehabilitation and immune-modulating liquid diets for 7 consecutive days before surgery. Nutritional guidance was provided by a dietitian, who set a daily energy target of 30 kcal/kg and a protein target of 1.2 g/kg. Upper and lower limb strength training was performed with a physical therapist. Blood biochemical data on nutrition such as serum Alb, PreAlb, CRP, levels were compared after preoperative support. Results Thirty five patients who underwent esophagectomy for esophageal cancer in this period and evaluate their blood and serum samples. The average age of the patients was 66 years, 29 men and 6 women. Serum Alb level was 4.01 ± 0.4 g/dl before admission and 3.74 ± 0.35 g/dl the day before surgery (p = 0.04), and serum transthyretin level was unchanged from 28.9 ± 5.5 mg/dl to 26.1 ± 4.75 mg/dl. Serum CRP level tended to decrease from O.23 ± 0.528 mg/dl before admission to 0.14 ± 0.23 mg/dl the day before surgery. Other index of nutritional status did not change significantly before or after the program. Improvements in preoperative inflammation and nutrition are expected to decrease surgical complications and contribute to cancer prognosis. Our study and intervention in the present study may have decreased inflammation, although it was not a clear objective improvement in nutritional status. The short duration of the intervention may have prevented a significant difference. A less prolonged hospitalization is not realistic and the most effective nutritional rehabilitation intervention should be devised in the future.

Abstract:Esophageal and gastric cancers have a significant prevalence. These patients often face a decline in functional capacity (FC) and muscle strength (MS), as consequence of neoadjuvant treatments and surgical resection; however, this decline can be minimized through appropriate exercise protocols. To assess evidence of the effects of physical exercise on HR and MS in patients with esophageal and stomach cancer. Systematic review of Randomized clinical trials with intervention based on exercises for patients with esophagogastric cancer (EGC). FC and MS were the outcomes. Searches in Medline via Pubmed, PEDro, Cochrane Library, Embase and CINAHL databases were performed. Cochrane Collaboration tool and GRADE system for risk of bias assessment. From 117 articles identified, eight studies were included, involving a total of 673 patients. In general, the approach during neoadjuvant therapy had a positive effect on the 6-minute walk test (6MWT) and on FM. Exercise performed in the preoperative period showed divergent results for inspiratory muscle strength, but improved HR assessed by the 6-minute walk test (6MWT). The postoperative exercise protocol increased the FC in 6MWT, and maximal oxygen consumption (VO2max). However, it does not improve MS. Studies also showed a moderate-to-high risk of bias. Although some studies point to positive results in favor of physical exercise in improving FC and MS in patients being treated for esophagogastric cancer, the degree of clinical recommendation is low.

Abstract:PurposeThe current study was designed to investigate the association between the average preoperative physical activity and postoperative outcomes in patients undergoing surgeries for hepato-pancreato-biliary (HPB) malignancy.MethodsPatients who were scheduled to undergo open abdominal surgeries for HPB malignancies (major hepatectomy, pancreatoduodenectomy, or hepato-pancreatoduodenectomy) between 2016 and 2017 were included. The average steps per day were recorded by a pedometer and calculated for each patient during the preoperative waiting period. Physical activity levels were classified according to the average number of daily steps as poor (< 5000 steps/day) and good (≥ 5000 steps/day).ResultsOf the 105 eligible patients, 78 met the inclusion criteria. The median number of steps per day was 6174. There were 48 patients (62%) with good physical activity and 30 patients (38%) with poor physical activity. Patients with poor physical activity revealed a significantly higher rate of major complications with Clavien grade ≥ 3 (63% vs. 35%, p = 0.016), a higher rate of infectious complications (53% vs. 23%, p = 0.006), and a longer postoperative hospital stay (median, 30 vs. 21 days, p < 0.001) compared with those with good physical activity. After a multivariate analysis, poor physical activity was identified as an independent risk factor for the development of major complications (odds ratio, 2.842, p = 0.042) and infectious complications (odds ratio, 3.844, p = 0.007).ConclusionsThe current study demonstrated that preoperative physical activity levels are associated with the incidence of major postoperative complications following HPB surgery for malignancy.

Abstract:Background: The purpose of the current study was to clarify the relationship between clinical features of dysphagia after esophagectomy and preoperative sarcopenia. Methods: A total of 187 cases were included in the current study. The psoas cross-sectional area on pre-treatment computed tomography was measured in thoracic esophageal cancer patients who underwent curative resection. The psoas muscle index (PMI) cut-off levels for sarcopenia were 6.36 cm2/m2 for men and 3.92 cm2/m2 for women. Swallowing function was evaluated using videofluoroscopic swallowing study (VFSS) and fiberoptic endoscopic evaluation of swallowing (FEES) at postoperative days 7-15, and classified according to the food intake level scale (FILS). Perioperative swallowing rehabilitation was performed in all cases. Results: In the 187 included patients, the median PMI was 5.42 cm2/m2 for men and 3.43 cm2/m2 for women, and 133 cases (71%) met the sarcopenia criteria. The FILS <4 (no oral intake) was 15% in the non-sarcopenia group, and 38% in the sarcopenia group (P = 0.003). There was no significant difference in the incidence of postoperative complications, including pneumonia and re-admission due to pneumonia, between the two groups. Preoperative sarcopenia and recurrent laryngeal nerve palsy were be independent risk factors for postoperative dysphagia. Conclusions: Sarcopenic patients with esophageal cancer develop postoperative dysphagia more often than non-sarcopenic patients. Prehabilitation and nutritional support for patients with preoperative sarcopenia could play an important role to mitigate postoperative dysphagia.

Abstract:Background Although preoperative physical exercise has been demonstrated to be associated with clinical improvements among abdominal cancer patients, there remains heterogeneity in exercise strategies and uncertainty of what the optimal strategies should be. Purpose This scoping review aimed to review and summarize the existing knowledge about preoperative exercise strategies for abdominal cancer patients. Methods The Joanna Briggs Institute (JBI) framework for conducting scoping reviews was adopted to investigate preoperative physical exercise strategies for patients undergoing major abdominal cancer surgery. Results A total of 1563 studies were identified and 24 were included in this review. Most of the study populations were colorectal cancer (n = 14). The most common type of exercise was a combination of aerobic and resistance exercises (n = 19). The most common form of aerobic exercise was walking (n = 13) or cycling (n = 12). Most resistance exercises were targeting at major muscle groups (n = 12). Most of the studies were performed at moderate intensity (n = 14) with frequency of 2 ~ 3 times/week (n = 14). The time of a training session was 30 ~ 60 min in half studies (n = 12). The intervention duration for most studies was less than 4 weeks (n = 11). Exercise locations included home (n = 10), facility (n = 7), and a combination of home and facility (n = 5). Phone calls were utilized by nearly half of the home-based exercise studies to supervise the exercise adherence (n = 7). Conclusions This review provides a comprehensive summary of preoperative physical exercise strategies. It has the potential to inform clinical practice and future studies.
Prevention of Sarcopenia and Maintenance of Exercise Tolerance by Individualized Prehabilitation in a Patient With Esophageal Cancer During Preoperative Adjuvant Therapy: A Case Report

Abstract:Preoperative adjuvant therapy for esophageal cancer increases sarcopenia and decreases exercise tolerance, which are risk factors for postoperative pneumonia. Preoperative rehabilitation for patients undergoing esophagectomy effectively reduces the incidence of postoperative pneumonia. Therefore, the risk factors should be optimized by preoperative rehabilitation. Our patient had several risk factors for postoperative pneumonia, including low exercise tolerance, presarcopenia, and low respiratory muscle strength. However, because of the patient's advanced age, multiple comorbidities, and poor nutritional status, we struggled to determine the appropriate exercise intensity. Furthermore, there was a concern that chemotherapy-related adverse events could prevent adequate exercise from being performed. However, with individualized measures such as adjustable exercise intensity settings based on treatment status and nutritional management through multidisciplinary collaboration, it was possible to prevent sarcopenia and maintain exercise tolerance during preoperative adjuvant therapy. Individualized support in preoperative rehabilitation was suggested to contribute to the prevention of sarcopenia and maintenance of exercise tolerance during preoperative adjuvant therapy.
The effect of neoadjuvant chemotherapy on physical fitness and survival in patients undergoing oesophagogastric cancer surgery

Abstract:Background: Neoadjuvant chemotherapy (NAC) followed by surgery for resectable oesophageal or gastric cancer improves outcome when compared with surgery alone. However NAC has adverse effects. We assess here whether NAC adversely affects physical fitness and whether such an effect is associated with impaired survival following surgery. Methods: We prospectively studied 116 patients with oesophageal or gastric cancer to assess the effect of NAC on physical fitness, of whom 89 underwent cardiopulmonary exercise testing (CPET) before NAC and proceeded to surgery. 39 patients were tested after all cycles of NAC but prior to surgery. Physical fitness was assessed by measuring oxygen uptake (VO₂ in ml kg(-1) min(-1)) at the estimated lactate threshold (θL) and at peak exercise (VO₂ peak in ml kg(-1) min(-1)). Results: VO₂ at θL and at peak were significantly lower after NAC compared to pre-NAC values: VO₂ at θL 14.5 ± 3.8 (baseline) vs. 12.3 ± 3.0 (post-NAC) ml kg(-1) min(-1); p ≤ 0.001; VO₂ peak 20.8 ± 6.0 vs. 18.3 ± 5.1 ml kg(-1) min(-1); p ≤ 0.001; absolute VO₂ (ml min(-1)) at θL and peak were also lower post-NAC; p ≤ 0.001. Decreased baseline VO₂ at θL and peak were associated with increased one year mortality in patients who completed a full course of NAC and had surgery; p = 0.014. Conclusion: NAC before cancer surgery significantly reduced physical fitness in the overall cohort. Lower baseline fitness was associated with reduced one-year-survival in patients completing NAC and surgery, but not in patients who did not complete NAC. It is possible that in some patients the harms of NAC may outweigh the benefits. Trials Registry Number: NCT01335555.

Abstract:Background. To investigate the effectiveness of prehabilitation in improving physical and nutritional status in patients undergoing gastric cancer resection. Methods. A total of 136 locally advanced gastric cancer patients who planned to undergo neoadjuvant chemotherapy (NAC) plus transabdominal radical surgery were involved. All participants were divided into the prehabilitation group and the control group using the odd-even method, with 68 cases in each group. Intervention consisted of preoperative exercise and nutrition optimization. Participants were adults awaiting elective gastric resection for cancer. The primary outcomes were changes in functional ability and nutritional status, as measured by relative changes in 6 minute walking distance (6MWD) and scores on the albumin and prealbumin. Preoperative (end of the prehabilitation period) and postoperative (from 4 to 6 weeks after surgery) data were compared between the two groups. Results. All 136 patients were randomized in this study. Compared with the control group, the prehabilitation group exhibited improved functional capacity both before surgery (6MWD change) and after surgery. Furthermore, it demonstrated significantly higher levels of albumin and prealbumin before and after surgery than the control group. Conclusion. Prehabilitation in gastric cancer patients can improve preoperative functional capacity and nutritional status. Maintaining a patient’s physical function and nutritional status may have a significant impact on the continuity of cancer care.

Abstract:Background Meta‐analyses have primarily focused on the effects of exercise‐based prehabilitation on postoperative outcomes and ignored the role of nutritional intervention. In this study, we filled this gap by investigating the effect of nutrition‐based prehabilitation on the postoperative outcomes of patients who underwent esophagectomy and gastrectomy. Methods Five electronic databases, namely, PubMed, the Web of Science, Embase, Cochrane Library, and CINAHL, were searched. Adults diagnosed with esophagogastric cancer who were scheduled to undergo surgery and had undergone uni‐ or multimodal prehabilitation, with at least a week of mandatory nutritional intervention, were included. Forest plots were used to extract and visualize the data from the included studies. The occurrence of any postoperative complication was considered the primary endpoint. Results Eight studies met the eligibility criteria, with five randomized controlled trials (RCTs) and three cohort studies. In total, 661 patients were included. Any prehabilitation, that is, unimodal (only nutrition) and multimodal prehabilitation, collectively decreased the risk of any postoperative complication by 23% (95% confidence interval [CI] = 0.66–0.90). A similar effect was exclusively observed for multimodal prehabilitation (risk ratio [RR] = 0.78, 95% CI = 0.66–0.93); however, it was not significant for unimodal prehabilitation. Any prehabilitation significantly decreased the length of hospital stay (LOS) (weighted mean difference = −0.77, 95% CI = −1.46 to −0.09). Conclusions Nutrition‐based prehabilitation, particularly multimodal prehabilitation, confers protective effects against postoperative complications after esophagectomy and gastrectomy. Our findings suggest that prehabilitation slightly decreases LOS; however, the finding is not clinically significant. Therefore, additional rigorous RCTs are warranted for further substantiation.

Abstract:Structured (249/250 words) Objective To investigate the impact of simple preoperative exercise tests as prognostic factors for early-stage lung cancer. Methods This single-institution retrospective study included consecutive patients who underwent pulmonary resection for stage 0-I lung cancer between April 2017 and December 2019. Before surgery, 7 metabolic equivalents (METs) in the double Master's two-step test were loaded into the exercise ECG. The relationship between prognosis and exercise stress test results in terms of availability, symptoms, and saturation of percutaneous oxygen was investigated. Results This study included 862 patients with pathological stage 0-I lung cancer. Among the 862 patients, 673 patients (78.1%) who were able to complete 7 METs exercise for 3 mins without assistance were classified into the complete group. The 5-year survival of the complete group was significantly better than that of the incomplete group. Multivariable analysis revealed that age (HR, 1.06; p = 0.008), male sex (HR, 2.23; p = 0.011), CEA level > 5 ng/mL (HR, 2.33; p = 0.011), and inability to complete 7 METs exercise (HR, 3.90; p < 0.001) were the prognostic factors. Patients in the older group who had the ability to complete exercise had a better prognosis than those in the younger group without the ability (p = 0.003). Conclusions Preoperative exercise ability is a prognostic factor for early-stage lung cancer. Patients who can tolerate an exercise load of 7 METs, even if they are aged ≥ 70 years, have a better prognosis than patients aged < 70 years without exercise tolerance.

Abstract:Integrative Cancer Therapies, Volume 23, Issue , January-December 2024. Background:The surgical intervention serves as the paramount and prevalent remedy for individuals afflicted with colorectal malignancies, with the significance of perioperative stewardship and convalescence being indisputable. Prehabilitation coupled with preoperative lifestyle modulation has demonstrated efficacy in patients subjected to certain classifications of abdominal procedures. However, the evidence pertaining to its impact on those battling colorectal cancer remains equivocal.Methods:A meta-analysis, grounded in pairwise contrast, of randomized controlled trials (RCTs) was orchestrated, coupled with a systematic review, to probe the efficacy of preoperative lifestyle modulation and prehabilitation on patients' postoperative functionality and recuperation. An exhaustive exploration of 8 electronic databases and trial registries was undertaken to encompass all pertinent RCTs disseminated in English or Chinese from January 2012 through December 2022. Employing a random-effects model, we evaluated parameters such as the 6-minute walk test (6 MWT), complications, quality of life (QoL), aggregate and postoperative duration of hospitalization (tLHS and postLHS), and healthcare expenditure (HExp) for postoperative patients.Results:A total of 28 RCTs were incorporated into the systematic review and meta-analysis. Relative to conventional preoperative care, rehabilitation or preoperative lifestyle management was found to enhance postoperative 6MWT (SMD 1.30, 95% CI 0.30 to 2.29) and diminish the complication rate (OR 0.53, 95% CI 0.40 to 0.69). Nonetheless, no significant discrepancies were observed in QoL (SMD 1.81, 95% CI −0.26 to 3.87), tLHS (SMD −0.26, 95% CI −0.68 to 0.15), and postLHS (SMD −1.46, 95% CI −3.12 to 0.20) between the groups. HExp could not be evaluated due to a lack of sufficient data for synthesis. Most pooled outcomes exhibited significant heterogeneity, urging a cautious interpretation. Subgroup analysis revealed that nutritional interventions could mitigate the incidence of complications, and preoperative exercise could improve tLHS and postLHS. A combined approach of physical, nutritional, and psychological intervention or prehabilitation proved superior to any single intervention in enhancing postoperative capabilities.Conclusion:This meta-analysis delineated the efficacy of preoperative interventions on postoperative capabilities in patients with colorectal cancer, thereby offering evidence for clinical practice. It was concluded that preoperative interventions are unequivocally beneficial for postoperative functional recovery and the reduction of complication rates in patients with colorectal cancer. Nonetheless, the acquisition of more high-level evidence is still necessitated to further ascertain the effectiveness of this strategy for other patient groups and to establish its best practices. The heterogeneity in the pooled outcomes underlines the need for future studies to be more uniform in their design and reporting, which would facilitate more robust and reliable meta-analyses.

Abstract:Progression of the physical weakness during neoadjuvant therapy (NAT) in patients with esophageal or gastroesophageal junction cancer is a serious problem; however, prehabilitation during NAT has the potential to overcome the unmet need. Nevertheless, systematic reviews on this topic have not been summarized. Therefore, this systematic review aimed to determine prehabilitation's effectiveness, acceptability, and safety during NAT for patients with esophageal or gastroesophageal junction cancer. An electronic search was performed in the MEDLINE, Web of Science, CENTRAL, CINAHL, and PEDro databases. A meta-analysis was conducted to assess the effectiveness of prehabilitation during NAT, along with a descriptive analysis of acceptance and safety. This study analyzed data from three randomized controlled trials (RCTs) and nine non-RCTs involving 664 patients. The meta-analysis of two RCTs demonstrated that prehabilitation during NAT may be more effective than usual care in enhancing tolerance to NAT and grip strength; moreover, one RCT and three non-RCTs revealed that prehabilitation may reduce the risk of postoperative complications. The adherence rates for exercise programs in two RCTs and seven non-RCTs were 55–76%. Additionally, two studies reported a 76% adherence rate for multimodal prehabilitation programs, including exercise, dietary, and psychological care. Six studies reported no serious prehabilitation-related adverse events during NAT. Prehabilitation during NAT may be a safe and beneficial intervention strategy for patients with esophageal or gastroesophageal junction cancer. However, the investigation of strategies to enhance adherence is essential. Furthermore, additional high-quality RCTs are needed to examine the effect of prehabilitation during NAT.

Abstract:Objective: The 6-min walk test (6MWT) is a simple and valid method to evaluate cardiopulmonary function. We performed this prospective study in patients undergoing laparoscopic gastrointestinal cancer surgery to explore the association between preoperative 6MWT performance and overall postoperative complications.Methods: This study was registered at clinicaltrials.gov (NCT03711526). The study consecutively enrolled patients receiving laparoscopic gastrointestinal cancer surgery in our institution. All patients performed the 6MWT upon recruitment and received 30 days of postoperative follow-up. The primary outcome was overall complications, defined by >= grade I Clavien-Dindo (CD) classification (2004) complications. Multivariable logistic regression was used to test the association of 6-min walk distance (6MWD) with the outcome.Results: A total of 184 patients were included in the final analyses. In the 37 (20.1 %) patients with overall complications, the mean (standard deviation) preoperative 6MWD was 469.1 (86.8) m. In patients with no complications, the 6MWD was 502.6 (90.2) m. The mean difference was 33.5 m (95 % confidence interval, 1.3, 65.7; P = 0.042). A longer preoperative 6MWD was associated with a lower odds of developing postoperative complications (odds ratio, 0.994 per meter increase; 95 % confidence interval, 0.989, 0.999; p = 0.023). Conclusion: This study indicated an association between the preoperative 6MWD and postoperative complications in patients undergoing laparoscopic gastrointestinal cancer surgery.
