Abstract:Nitrogen dioxide (NO2) has been severely polluting the atmosphere and deteriorating human beings' sustainable lives. Therefore, development of gas sensors for high-selectivity and high-sensitivity detection of NO2 has been attracting increasing attention. The state-of-the-art inorganic NO2 gas sensors require harsh fabrication conditions or toxic materials, making the devices intrinsically eco-unfriendly. Furthermore, in most cases the sensors work at high temperatures. These disadvantages severely impede their practical applications. Herein, we report a room-temperature and highly-integrated NO2 sensor composed of p-type self-assembled peptide fibrillar nanoforests (SPNFs) scaffolded with n-type SnO2 nanoparticles (NPs) heterojunctions. The p-n conformations provide efficient access to target gases and allow reliable electron transformations, while the SPNFs afford a large specific surface area and multiporous structures for gas adsorption and SnO2 NPs dispersion, resulting in an ultrahigh selectivity for NO2 detection. Especially, the sensing performance can be optimized by modulating the thickness and density of the SPNFs, showing a high response, short response and recovery times, along with a low detection limitation. Our strategy demonstrates the development of a bioinspired platform by utilizing peptide selfassemblies to fabricate integrated sensors for polluting gas detections.

Abstract:Abstract Atmospheric NO 2 is of great concern due to its adverse effects on human health and the environment, motivating research on NO 2 detection and remediation. Existing low-cost room-temperature NO 2 sensors often suffer from low sensitivity at the ppb level or long recovery times, reflecting the trade-off between sensor response and recovery time. Here, we report an atomically dispersed metal ion strategy to address it. We discover that bimetallic PbCdSe quantum dot (QD) gels containing atomically dispersed Pb ionic sites achieve the optimal combination of strong sensor response and fast recovery, leading to a high-performance room-temperature p-type semiconductor NO 2 sensor as characterized by a combination of ultra–low limit of detection, high sensitivity and stability, fast response and recovery. With the help of theoretical calculations, we reveal the high performance of the PbCdSe QD gel arises from the unique tuning effects of Pb ionic sites on NO 2 binding at their neighboring Cd sites.

Abstract:Nitrogen dioxide (NO 2 ) is a typical reactive nitrogen species harmful to health and the environment. However, NO 2 sensors still suffer from low sensitivity and poor response/recovery rates. Herein, 3D In 2 O 3 assembled by stacked nanosheets were prepared and modified with N element-doped GQDs (N-GQDs) and Fe, N co-doped GQDs (Fe,N-GQDs), respectively. The results of NO 2 -sensing performance indicated that the optimal sample (0.3 wt% Fe,N-GQDs/In 2 O 3 ) showed a high response of 414.5 to 1 ppm NO 2 and could detect as low as 10 ppb at 50°C, which was 1.3 and 4.0 times higher than that of 0.3 wt% N-GQDs/In 2 O 3 and In 2 O 3 , respectively. The gas-sensing kinetics were analyzed by establishing gas adsorption/desorption isotherms. The enhanced NO 2 sensing properties of 0.3 wt% Fe,N-GQDs/In 2 O 3 were mainly due to the enhanced active site accessibility of stacked nanosheets with open layer spaces, the heterointerface between Fe,N-GQDs and In 2 O 3 , and electrical modulation of Fe,N-GQDs. Additionally, A pulse-driving circuit was designed for a pulse temperature modulation (PTM) strategy to further boost NO 2 detection. The sensor response is further enhanced by 1.7 times, and the response/recovery time is reduced by 42.5%/60.1%. The NO 2 concentration in vehicle exhaust was determined using PTM mode with good spike recoveries. It validated the reliability of the sensor for the quantitative detection of NO 2 in the real environment. This work provides insights into sensor design and has the potential to contribute to the development of novel sensing platforms for other gas pollutants.

Abstract:Nitrogen dioxide is one origin of air pollution from fossil fuels with the potential to cause great harm to human health in low concentrations. Therefore, low-cost, low-power-consumption sensors for low-concentration NO2 detection are essential. Herein, heterojunction by SnO2 quantum wires, a traditional metal oxide NO2 sensing material, and Ti3C2Tx MXene, a novel type of 2D layered material, was synthesized using a simple solvothermal method for enhancing gas-sensing performance and reducing operating temperature. The operating temperature was reduced to 80 °C, with a best performance of 27.8 and a fast response and recovery time (11 s and 23 s, respectively). The SnO2 and Ti3C2Tx MXene composite exhibits high speed and low detection limit due to the construction of the heterojunction with high conductive Ti3C2Tx MXene. The selectivity and stability of gas sensors are carried out. This could enable the realization of fast response, high-sensitivity, and selective NO2 sensing under low operating temperatures.

Abstract:NO 2 is a toxic gas that reacts with other organic compounds in the air, causing air pollution and posing a significant risk to humans. Therefore, a gas sensor is needed to detect NO 2 . However, conventional NO 2 gas sensors are difficult to operate at room temperature (25°C). In this study, NO 2 gas sensing by SnS 2 /In 2 O 3 at room temperature (25°C) is reported. In 2 O 3 quantum dots and SnS 2 nanosheets were prepared by the hot-injection and hydrothermal methods. By virtue of the unique two-dimensional structure of SnS 2 , In 2 O 3 was decorated on it, and the composite enhanced its sensing performance. The products were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HR-TEM) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The results demonstrate that the composites prepared by 52% In 2 O 3 exhibit the best sensing response. The fabricated sensor shows a response of 26.6 to 1000 ppb NO 2 , along with fast response and recovery times, respectively, at room temperature (25°C). Moreover, this sensor demonstrates excellent reproducibility and selectivity. The heterojunction structure increases the number of active sites and accelerates the gas transport, which promotes charge transfer and gas desorption to improve NO 2 gas sensing performance. This excellent sensing performance has a great application prospect in NO 2 detection.

Abstract:The inherent high surface areas and unique semiconducting properties of two-dimensional (2D) transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) make them attractive for the sensing applications. However, the challenges of sensitivity, recoverability and stability still need to be overcome for the rapidly developing fields of TMD based gas sensors. With the general advantages of 2D nanomaterials, construction of 2D TMD based heterostructure is an effective approach for improving their sensing performance by the synergistic effects of hybridization. Herein, we design a novel tungsten disulfide (WS2)/zinc sulfide (ZnS) based TMD heterostructure to realize quick and reversible nitrogen dioxide (NO2) detection at room temperature (25 degrees C). Specifically, the engineered 2D/0D WS2/ZnS p-n heterostructure gives a desired response of 32.5 to 5 ppm NO2 with a fast response speed of 4 s, which is dramatically enhanced compared with that of pure WS2 nanosheets. More importantly, WS2/ZnS heterostructure based gas sensor can achieve full recovery state after each sensing cycle without using external energies, showing an excellent recyclability at room temperature. The optimal sensor also exhibits low detection concentration of 10 ppb, high selectivity as well as outstanding long-term stability. Such impressive features originating from the synergistic effects of WS2/ZnS heterostructure have been discussed in detail from the geometrical, electronic and chemical effects. These outstanding sensing properties of WS2/ZnS heterostructure sensor imply the possibility of using this novel nanostructure in highly efficient NO2 room temperature sensing applications.
Enabling Quick Response to Nitrogen Dioxide at Room Temperature and Limit of Detection to Ppb Level by Heavily n-Doped Graphene Hybrid Transistor

Abstract:Sensitive detection of nitrogen dioxide (NO2) is of significance in many areas for health and environmental protections. In this work, we developed an efficient NO2 sensor that can respond within seconds at room temperature, and the limit of detection (LOD) is as low as 100 ppb. Coating cyano-substituted poly(p-phenylene vinylene) (CN-PPV) films on graphene (G) layers can dope G sheets effectively to a heavy n state. The influences of solution concentrations and annealing temperatures on the n-doping effect were investigated in detail. The CN-PPV–G transistors fabricated with the optimized parameters demonstrate active sensing abilities toward NO2. The n-doping state of CN-PPV–G is reduced dramatically by NO2, which is a strong p-doping compound. Upon exposure to 25 ppm of NO2, our CN-PPV–G sensors react in 10 s, indicating it is almost an immediate response. LOD is determined as low as 100 ppb. The ultrahigh responding speed and low LOD are not affected in dry air. Furthermore, cycling use of our sensors can be realized through simple annealing. The superior features shown by our CN-PPV–G sensors are highly desired in the applications of monitoring the level of NO2 in situ and setting immediate alarms. Our results also suggest that transfer curves of transistors can react very promptly to the stimulus of target gas and, thus, are very promising in the development of fast-response sensing devices although the response values may not reach maximum as a tradeoff.

Abstract:Lead chalcogenide colloidal quantum dots (CQDs) have the potential to be a new generation of high-performance gas sensing materials for its high chemical activity, facile solution processability and size tunability. However, the high chemical activity of CQDs also leads the CQDs to be easily oxidized, which would reduce the long-term stability of CQDs based gas sensors. Here we try to introduce halogen ligands in the synthesis of PbS CQDs by using lead halide as precursor. These halogen ligands play a passivate role and are beneficial in improving the long-term stability of PbS CQDs based gas sensors. Results show that although the PbS CQDs synthesized using lead halide as precursor exhibit relatively low sensor response than that synthesized using traditional lead oxide as precursor, it exhibit faster response and recovery times. More importantly, the sensors employing halogen passivated PbS CQDs exhibit superior long-term stability, in which more than 80% of their original NO2-sensing performance are still presented after 30 days. It could be attributed to the surface halogen derived from the lead precursor, which prevent CQDs from reacting with the atmosphere and thus maintain the oxidative stability of CQDs. This research will pave the way for improving the long-term stability of lead chalcogenide CQDs based gas sensors.

Abstract:Rapid and ultrasensitive detection of toxic gases at room temperature is highly desired in health protection but presents grand challenges in the sensing materials reported so far. Here, we present a gas sensor based on novel zero dimensional (0D)/two dimensional (2D) indium oxide (In2O3)/titanium carbide (Ti3C2Tx) Schottky heterostructures with a high surface area and rich oxygen vacancies for parts per billion (ppb) level nitrogen dioxide (NO2) detection at room temperature. The In2O3/Ti3C2Tx gas sensor exhibits a fast response time (4 s), good response (193.45% to 250 ppb NO2), high selectivity, and excellent cycling stability. The rich surface oxygen vacancies play the role of active sites for the adsorption of NO2 molecules, and the Schottky junctions effectively adjust the charge-transfer behavior through the conduction tunnel in the sensing material. Furthermore, In2O3 nanoparticles almost fully cover the Ti3C2Tx nanosheets which can avoid the oxidation of Ti3C2Tx, thus contributing to the good cycling stability of the sensing materials. This work sheds light on the sensing mechanism of heterojunction nanostructures and provides an efficient pathway to construct high-performance gas sensors through the rational design of active sites.

Abstract:In this study, all‐inorganic mixed‐halide perovskite nanocrystals demonstrate high‐performance optoelectronic NO2 sensing at room temperature with ultra‐fast response and recovery time. By tailoring halide composition, superior sensing response in both chemiresistive and chemioptical modes is achieved in CsPbI2Br sensors with high selectivity toward NO2, underscoring the potential of composition‐tailored perovskite nanocrystals as a versatile platform for advancing next‐generation NO2 detection technologies. Gas sensors are of great interest to portable and miniaturized sensing technologies with applications ranging from air quality monitoring to explosive detection and medical diagnostics, but the existing chemiresistive NO2 sensors still suffer from issues such as poor sensitivity, high operating temperature, and slow recovery. Herein, a high‐performance NO2 sensors based on all‐inorganic perovskite nanocrystals (PNCs) is reported, achieving room temperature operation with ultra‐fast response and recovery time. After tailoring the halide composition, superior sensitivity of ≈67 at 8 ppm NO2 is obtained in CsPbI2Br PNC sensors with a detection level down to 2 ppb, which outperforms other nanomaterial‐based NO2 sensors. Furthermore, the remarkable optoelectronic properties of such PNCs enable dual‐mode operation, i.e., chemiresistive and chemioptical sensing, presenting a new and versatile platform for advancing high‐performance, point‐of‐care NO2 detection technologies.

Abstract:Flower-like zinc oxide nanoclusters were successfully incorporated by different amount of PTCDA organic dye molecular, forming the hetero-structured PTCDA/ZnO composites. Remarkably, a study performed on their NO 2 sensing properties reveals that the 0.5 wt% PTCDA-loaded ZnO sensor exhibits high response, excellent selectivity, quick response speed and low detection limit of 7.4 ppb towards NO 2 molecules at room temperature (25 °C) under green light illumination, which possesses an apparent advantage over the ZnO sensors loaded with other PTCDA concentration as well as upon other light illumination conditions. This work makes a meaningful contribution to the development of NO 2 sensor based on wide-band gap semiconductors with visible light irradiation.

Abstract:Detecting trace-level nitrogen dioxide (NO2) in real time is critical due to its adverse impact on human health and the environment. However, achieving a fast response, high sensitivity and selectivity, and excellent stability in NO2 detection remains a challenge. Two-dimensional (2D) metal chalcogenides are promising for gas sensing, but their practical use is thwarted by issues like insufficient recovery and poor stability. As an alternative, it is anticipated that 2D metal oxychalcogenides, an emerging class of gas-sensing semiconductor materials, offer favorable characteristics. In this work, 2D p-type gallium oxyselenide nanosheets tailored with various oxygen concentrations are synthesized by regulating the annealing temperature of gallium selenide. We find that the gas sensor based on GaSe0.31O0.69 exhibits the highest response of 58.28% for 10 ppm of NO2 at room temperature. In addition, the sensor has high selectivity, with a response more than 10 times higher than interfering gases. More importantly, this material exhibited outstanding long-term stability (up to 4 months) and demonstrated a reversible response to NO2 at room temperature. This work paves a cost-effective way for the development of room-temperature NO2 gas sensors, exhibiting an exceptional gas response and long-term stability.

Abstract:2D Transition metal dichalcogenide (TMDs) has been recognized as a potential candidate for constructing wearable and safe room temperature gas sensor. Especially, the heterostructures of TMDs/ metal oxide semiconductors (MOS) have been proved to be potential candidates as NO2 sensors at room temperature. However, the response/recovery rate and reversibility of the sensors is still not satisfactory due to the inefficient charge transfer on TMDs/MOS hetero-interface. In this study, SnO2 quantum dots (QDs) were simply decorated on the surface of few or single layer WS2 nanosheets to form 2D/0D heterostructures via a facile room temperature aqueous solution process and self-assembly method. The 2D/0D WS2/SnO2 heterostructure-based optoelectronic gas sensor showed fast response/recovery rates and full reversibility to NO2 at room temperature with enhanced response. The remarkable improvement in NO2 sensing was because of the efficient interfacial charge separation rendered by 2D/0D heterostructures under ultraviolet illumination. Therefore, this study points out a potential strategy for the design of light-enhanced gas sensing materials.

Abstract:While continuously developing high-performance chemoresistive gas sensors, reducing device power consumption is not negligible. One of the most efficient ways is to enable gas sensors to work close to room temperature. In this work, we present a gas sensor based on hexagonal tin disulfide (SnS2) nanoplates for sensitive and reversible NO2 sensing at room temperature. Two-dimensional SnS2 nanoplates are synthesized via a facile hydrothermal method using Triton X-100 as a surfactant. The sensor exhibits a high response of 15.6 for 50 ppm NO2 with an experimental limit of detection of 50 ppb at room temperature. Besides, excellent linearity, outstanding selectivity, and reliable long-term stability within 40 d are also demonstrated during the experiment process. The sensing mechanism of this sensor could be explained as the physisorption and charge transfer between NO2 molecules and SnS2 nanoplates, which make it possible for the sensor to work at such a low operating temperature. Our research resulted in a SnS2 nanoplate-based sensor that may pave a new way for effective NO2 detection in the future.

Abstract:The highly sensitive detection of ppb-level NO 2 at room temperature (RT, 25 °C) remains a challenge hindering the detection of metal oxides due to their chemical inactivity. Herein, a strategy for constructing mixed metal oxides with high specific surface areas and highly active surfaces is proposed. In this work, we synthesized NiO-SnO 2 using the solvothermal and calcination methods with Ni/Sn bimetallic organic frameworks (Ni/Sn-BTC MOFs, BTC: benzene-1,3,5-tricarboxylic) as sacrificial templates. The characterization shows that NiO-SnO 2 has a high porosity (0.343 m 3 /g) and a large specific surface area (74.73 m 2 /g), which can produce abundant permeability pathways for NO 2 , maximize the number of active sites, and enhance the capacity for NO 2 capture. The sensing test results indicate that the NiO-SnO 2 sensor exhibits an excellent sensing response of 693.1% (ΔR/R a ) to 150 ppb NO 2 , a fast response/recovery time (86.8/29.4 s), a distinct selectivity, a lower detection limit (25 ppb) and good long-term stability at RT and 60% RH (RH: relative humidity). The outstanding sensing performance can be attributed to the microstructure characteristics, oxygen vacancies and p-n heterojunctions formed between NiO and SnO 2 . The current work provides a versatile platform for designing sensitive materials with heterogeneous structures and opens up a new pathway for the development of room temperature gas sensors based on metal oxide.

Enhancing Room-Temperature NO2 Gas Sensing Performance Based on a Metal Phthalocyanine/graphene Quantum Dot Hybrid Material.

Abstract:Metal phthalocyanine (MPc) has a great saturation response value, but its low conductivity and slow response speed limit its practical application. A novel hybrid material composed of graphene quantum dots (GQDs) and metal phthalocyanine derivatives has been obtained. GQDs can be anchored onto the surface of MPc nanofibers through π-π stacking. The response to NO2 can be significantly enhanced under certain component proportion matching, which is much better than their respective response to NO2. The introduction of GQDs greatly increases the conductivity of phthalocyanine fibers, leading to a faster response of the hybrid material. In addition, the reproducibility, selectivity and stability of the hybrid materials are excellent, and the minimum response concentration can reach 50 ppb. Ultra-low-power laser irradiation was used to solve the problem of slow recovery of metal phthalocyanine. Overall, we present the advantages of combining MPc nanofibers with GQDs and pave a new avenue for the application of MPc-GQD hybrids in the gas sensing field.
N-Doped Carbon Dots/Sns2 Heterostructures for Ultra-Fast and Sub-Ppb-Level Detection of No2 in Multiple Environments

Abstract:Nitrogen dioxide (NO2) 2 ) is one of the most common toxic gases, which not only impairs human health but also produces secondary pollutants induced by sunlight via associated photochemical reactions. Herein, we design a high-performance NO2 2 sensor based on the N-doped carbon dots/SnS2 2 (N-CDs/SnS2) 2 ) heterostructure using density functional theory (DFT) calculations. The DFT results approve that the decoration of N-doped carbon dots (N-CDs) onto the SnS2 2 nanosheet enhances adsorption capacity and electron transportation compared with those of pure SnS2, 2 , significantly enhancing the sensing responses. In addition, these in-situ synthesized N-CDs onto SnS2 2 nanosheet leads to band alignment, thereby significantly improves conductivity and enhances transportation and storage properties of carriers via a synergistic interaction. Furthermore, employment of UV illumination significantly increases active adsorption sites and enhances response and recovery kinetics. As a result, the developed NO2 2 sensor achieves fast responses of a few seconds and a limit of detection down to sub-ppb-level with the help of UV illumination. It also shows good linearly, operated in both air and oxygen-free environments, at both room or low temperature (238 K) conditions. The developed multi-framework offers an efficient and precision detection of NO2 2 with ultrafast responses and ultralow concentrations in multiple environments.

Abstract:Abstract ZnO quantum dots sensitized SnO 2 porous nanowires were fabricated and designed for UV excitation gas sensor. The ZnO/SnO 2 composite (SZQ1%) with the molar proportion of 1:100 exhibits excellent sensing properties to NO 2 gas under UV irradiation at 40 °C. The limits of detection of the SZQ1% sensor is 100 ppb. The humidity stability of SZQ1% was also measured and discussed by DC reversed circuit and complex impedance curves. The gas sensing mechanism is well discussed and illustrated to the ZnO quantum dots sensitized and the increased photo-generated carriers under UV irradiation.

Abstract:Flower-like zinc oxide nanoclusters were successfully incorporated by different amount of PTCDA organic dye molecular, forming the hetero-structured PTCDA/ZnO composites. Remarkably, a study performed on their NO2 sensing properties reveals that the 0.5 wt% PTCDA-loaded ZnO sensor exhibits high response, excellent selectivity, quick response speed and low detection limit of 7.4 ppb towards NO2 molecules at room temperature (25 degrees C) under green light illumination, which possesses an apparent advantage over the ZnO sensors loaded with other PTCDA concentration as well as upon other light illumination conditions. This work makes a meaningful contribution to the development of NO2 sensor based on wide-band gap semiconductors with visible light irradiation.
