Abstract:Nitrogen dioxide (NO2) has been severely polluting the atmosphere and deteriorating human beings' sustainable lives. Therefore, development of gas sensors for high-selectivity and high-sensitivity detection of NO2 has been attracting increasing attention. The state-of-the-art inorganic NO2 gas sensors require harsh fabrication conditions or toxic materials, making the devices intrinsically eco-unfriendly. Furthermore, in most cases the sensors work at high temperatures. These disadvantages severely impede their practical applications. Herein, we report a room-temperature and highly-integrated NO2 sensor composed of p-type self-assembled peptide fibrillar nanoforests (SPNFs) scaffolded with n-type SnO2 nanoparticles (NPs) heterojunctions. The p-n conformations provide efficient access to target gases and allow reliable electron transformations, while the SPNFs afford a large specific surface area and multiporous structures for gas adsorption and SnO2 NPs dispersion, resulting in an ultrahigh selectivity for NO2 detection. Especially, the sensing performance can be optimized by modulating the thickness and density of the SPNFs, showing a high response, short response and recovery times, along with a low detection limitation. Our strategy demonstrates the development of a bioinspired platform by utilizing peptide selfassemblies to fabricate integrated sensors for polluting gas detections.
Fully Flexible MXene-based Gas Sensor on Paper for Highly Sensitive Room-Temperature Nitrogen Dioxide Detection.

Abstract:Flexible chemiresistive gas sensors have attracted growing interest due to their capability in real-time and rapid detection of gas. However, the performance of gas sensors has long been hindered by the poor charge transfer ability between the conventional metal electrode and gas sensing semiconductors. Herein, for the first time, a fully flexible paper-based gas sensor integrated with the Ti3C2Tx-MXene nonmetallic electrode and the Ti3C2Tx/WS2 gas sensing film was designed to form Ohmic contact and Schottky heterojunction in a single gas sensing channel. Ti3C2Tx/WS2 has outstanding physical and chemical properties for both Ti3C2Tx and WS2 nanoflakes, showing high conductivity, effective charge transfer, and abundant active sites for gas sensing. The response of the gas sensor to NO2 (1 ppm) at room temperature is 15.2%, which is about 3.2 and 76.0 times as high as that of the Au interdigital electrode integrated with the Ti3C2Tx/WS2 sensor (4.8%) and the MXene electrode integrated with the Ti3C2Tx sensor (0.2%), respectively. Besides, this design performed at a limit of detection with 11.0 ppb NO2 gas and displayed excellent stability under high humidities. Based on first-principles density functional theory calculation results, the improvement of the gas sensing performance can be mainly attributed to the heterojunction regulation effect, work function matching, and suppressing metal-induced gap states. This work provides a new approach for the design of flexible gas sensors on paper with MXene-based conductive electrodes and gas sensing materials.

Abstract:Along with the revolution of the Internet of Things (IoT), smart, flexible, easily fabricated, and highly sensitive gas sensors are essential for many portable electronics. In this study, a wearable NO2 sensor based on a nanomesh structure woven with Ti3C2Tx microflakes and Bi2S3 nanobelts operated at room temperature was successfully designed and prepared. The effects of the mass ratio between two materials on the performance were evaluated. Bi2S3 nanobelts embedded inside accordion-like Ti3C2Tx provide large specific surface areas and abundant active sites for the adsorption of NO2 molecules. Attributed to the high conductivity of Ti3C2Tx, the carriers generated in the sensitive layers are easily transmitted during sensing, thus significantly reducing the response and recovery times. The sensor based on the nanomesh containing 30 wt % Ti3C2Tx exhibits excellent sensing performance, fast response/recovery rates, and high stability even in arbitrary deformed shape conditions. Upon exposure to 1 ppm NO2, the response of the sensor is 12.67, and the response/recovery times are 5/28 s, respectively. A stable sensing performance can be maintained after 1500 cycles of deformation. This work demonstrates a simple but reliable manufacturing strategy of wearable gas sensors for the next generation of IoT monitoring network-linking human activities.
Ultrasensitive flexible NO2 gas sensors via multilayer porous polymer film

Abstract:Micro-nano structure engineering of active materials in sensors have attracted broad attention for hazardous component detection, which enables creating electronic noses that could detect gas analytes efficiently without introducing abundant functional groups and defects. However, challenges still remain on realizing flexible gas sensors with both decent sensing performance and good mechanical robustness, which are extremely important for wearable electronics. Here we present a scalable and facile manufacturing method to construct the three-dimensional (3D) multilayer porous organic semiconductors (OSCs) structure for transistor based gas sensor, showing largely enhanced gas sensing properties as well as bendability down to 1 mm radius with stable operation. The multilayer porous film of OSCs is assembled via breath figure method, followed by layer-by-layer transferring process. The formed 3D porous structure provides efficient hazardous gas diffusion pathways, abundant gas molecules adsorption active sites and immunity towards mechanical deformation simultaneously. Consequently, an obvious increase of responsivity (from 122% to 1053% at 30 ppm) was achieved for NO2 detection, along with an ultralow limit of detection (∼2.3 ppb), and good gas selectivity. This work demonstrates a scalable and low-cost fabrication strategy for high-performance flexible sensors, which delivers an alternative way for next-generation wearable electronics.
Highly sensitive and recoverable room-temperature NO<sub>2</sub> gas detection realized by 2D/0D MoS<sub>2</sub>/ZnS heterostructures with synergistic effects

Abstract:Two-dimensional (2D) transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) have received emerging attention due to their rich active sites, layered structure, and suitable electronic structure for gas sensing at room temperature (25 degrees C). However, the sensitivity, recoverability, stability and selectivity of TMDs-based gas sensors have remained a grand challenge. Herein, a novel 2D/0D molybdenum disulfide (MoS2)/zinc sulfide (ZnS) based gas sensor was rationally designed via a two-step solution process, enabling high-performance detection of nitrogen dioxide (NO2) gas at room temperature. Specifically, the MoS2/ZnS heterostructures manifest a greatly enhanced response performance (S = 7.2) to 5 ppm NO2 in comparison with the bare MoS2 nanosheets. The gas sensor can be completely recovered after re-exposing to the air for 4.6 min at room temperature without using any external auxiliary treatments. Our optimized gas sensor not only exhibits an ultra-low theoretical limit of detection (14 ppb), but also shows an ultrahigh selectivity and outstanding stability. We further showed that the greatly enhanced gas sensing performance of 2D/0D MoS2/ZnS can be ascribed to the unique structure as well as the synergistic effects between MoS2 nanosheets and ZnS nanoparticles from the geometrical, charge transfer, equivalent resistance, and chemical aspects. This work provides a promising approach to the fabrication of high-performance gas sensing materials for environmental monitoring at room temperature.

Abstract:Rapid and ultrasensitive detection of toxic gases at room temperature is highly desired in health protection but presents grand challenges in the sensing materials reported so far. Here, we present a gas sensor based on novel zero dimensional (0D)/two dimensional (2D) indium oxide (In2O3)/titanium carbide (Ti3C2Tx) Schottky heterostructures with a high surface area and rich oxygen vacancies for parts per billion (ppb) level nitrogen dioxide (NO2) detection at room temperature. The In2O3/Ti3C2Tx gas sensor exhibits a fast response time (4 s), good response (193.45% to 250 ppb NO2), high selectivity, and excellent cycling stability. The rich surface oxygen vacancies play the role of active sites for the adsorption of NO2 molecules, and the Schottky junctions effectively adjust the charge-transfer behavior through the conduction tunnel in the sensing material. Furthermore, In2O3 nanoparticles almost fully cover the Ti3C2Tx nanosheets which can avoid the oxidation of Ti3C2Tx, thus contributing to the good cycling stability of the sensing materials. This work sheds light on the sensing mechanism of heterojunction nanostructures and provides an efficient pathway to construct high-performance gas sensors through the rational design of active sites.
Enhanced gas-sensing performance of SnO2/Nb2O5 hybrid nanowires

Abstract:Semiconductor tin oxide (SnO2) is acknowledged to be one of the semiconductor oxides with most potential for utilization as nitrogen dioxide (NO2)-sensor materials. However, the challenge to improve the gas sensitivity still remains, and this limits the full realization of the SnO2 sensor potential. In this paper, enhanced gas sensitivity obtained by the formation of a SnO2/niobium pentoxide (Nb2O5) hybrid structure is reported. As the NO2 concentration is lower to 3 ppm, the measured resistance in the SnO2/Nb2O5-based sensor is still 2.5 times larger than that in a pristine SnO2-based sensor. With an increase in the NO2 concentration, the response time of the SnO2/Nb2O5-based sensor decreases sharply whereas the pristine SnO2-based sensor response time increases. The enhanced performance is attributed to the presence of more oxygen vacancies and a higher specific surface area in the hybrid structure induced by the introduction of Nb2O5. These results provide some general guidelines for the selection of compositions to enhance the sensor performance.
High-Performance Ppb Level NO2 Gas Sensor Based on Colloidal SnO2 Quantum Wires/Ti3C2Tx MXene Composite

Abstract:Nitrogen dioxide is one origin of air pollution from fossil fuels with the potential to cause great harm to human health in low concentrations. Therefore, low-cost, low-power-consumption sensors for low-concentration NO2 detection are essential. Herein, heterojunction by SnO2 quantum wires, a traditional metal oxide NO2 sensing material, and Ti3C2Tx MXene, a novel type of 2D layered material, was synthesized using a simple solvothermal method for enhancing gas-sensing performance and reducing operating temperature. The operating temperature was reduced to 80 °C, with a best performance of 27.8 and a fast response and recovery time (11 s and 23 s, respectively). The SnO2 and Ti3C2Tx MXene composite exhibits high speed and low detection limit due to the construction of the heterojunction with high conductive Ti3C2Tx MXene. The selectivity and stability of gas sensors are carried out. This could enable the realization of fast response, high-sensitivity, and selective NO2 sensing under low operating temperatures.

Abstract:In this paper, MOFs-derived transition metal oxides (CuO NPs) were prepared by hydrothermal method combined with the stirring aging method using MOFs as sacrificial templates to realize the growth of CuO NPs octahedra on Ti3C2TX MXene nanosheets. Due to the synthesized binary heterostructured CuO NPs/Ti3C2TX MXene materials retain the unique MOFs structures, have abundant heterojunction interface, and owns the advantages of MOFs, such as large specific surface area, abundant active sites, high porosity, and effective oxidative chemical adsorption, the composite sensor shows very significant gas sensing capabilities for NO2 gas with a gas-sensitive response and response time of 38.54 and 2.84 s, respectively, for 100 ppm NO2 gas at RT. It achieves an impressively low detection limit of 30 ppb, maintaining stability for up to 10 weeks. This positions it as a highly sensitive NO2 gas sensor with potential for room-temperature applications.

Advanced 2D nanosheet-based gas sensor for sensitive detection of low concentration NO2 gas using In2O3/Ti3C2 layers

Abstract:The detection of small quantities of hazardous and flammable gases at room temperature is crucial for protecting human health and the environment. In this study, the indium oxide (In2O3) and MXene (Ti3C2) were prepared separately using different techniques and then combined to form a composite through sonication in an ethanol solution. The findings from the gas-sensing performance revealed that the In2O3/Ti3C2 nanocomposites had very high response values of 3785.01 and 33.84 towards 100 and 10 ppm NO2 gas at the optimal working temperature (150 °C) respectively. The In2O3/Ti3C2-1 composite has a strong linear relation (R2 = 0.9869), it is reproducible and has prolonged detection stability. The occurrence of oxygen vacancies and the creation of Schottky barriers are principally responsible for the outstanding gas-sensing capabilities reported. The computed response and recovery times were 24 and 56 s respectively under 100 ppm NO2 environment showing strong selectivity toward the gas. This research combines density function theory (DFT) to investigate the room-temperature gas sensitivity of indium oxide-MXene nanocomposites, shedding new light on how to optimize the materials for practical applications in wearable and low-energy consumption devices.

2D/2D {001}TiO2-/Ti3C2T composite with ultra-high sensing performance for NO2 at room temperature

Abstract:The remarkable electrical conductivity, abundance of surface functional groups, and large specific surface area make 2D MXenes-based heterostructures highly promising for room temperature gas sensing applications. However, these MXenes-based heterojunctions composed of different materials may suffer from issues, such as crystal incompatibility and bandgap mismatch. Herein, the {001}TiO2-x /Ti3C2T x composite was prepared in situ by hydrothermal process and subsequent annealing. The {001} facets of TiO2 and oxygen vacancies that provide a heightened exposure of active sites in the composite and more gas diffusion channels, as well as the formation of Schottky barriers between {001}TiO2 nanosheets and Ti3C2T x , can synergistically enhance the gas performance. The experimental results show that the {001}TiO2-x /Ti3C2T x composite exhibits 1.9 and 27.5 times higher than the {001}TiO2/Ti3C2T x composite and pristine Ti3C2T x to 10 ppm NO2 at room temperature, respectively. Moreover, the {001}TiO2-x /Ti3C2T x composite presents the great linear response (R2 = 0.99509), selectivity, repeatability and long-term stability to NO2. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations reveal the strong interactions between the {001}TiO2-x /Ti3C2T x and NO2, indicating excellent sensitivity and selectivity of the composite material towards NO2. This work provides an effective way to construct a series of oxygen-defective Ti3C2T x -based composites with exposed high-energy facets for enhanced gas sensing performances.

Abstract:Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) are potential candidates for wearable gas monitoring devices based on their large surface area, room temperature response and flexibility. Considering the demand on sensitivity and flexibility, innovated structural design is essential for realizing those applications. Here, we present a carbon nanotubes-anatase titanium dioxide (CNT/a-TiO2) film-based sensor by in situ hydrolysis and calcination. The CNT/a-TiO 2 sensor exhibits good sensitivity (41% resistance change in response to 50 ppm NO), fast and reversible response at room temperature, and high selectivity toward NO among several toxic gases including NH3, NO2, CH4 and H2S. Furthermore, the continuous CNT/a-TiO2 network, consisting of numerous flexible micro-areas of CNT segments interlaced with rigid CNT/a-TiO2 active segments, can endure complex deformations while maintaining their superior sensing properties. These lightweight CNT/a-TiO2 films with high performance and intrinsic flexibility films have application potential in future wearable electronics and gas monitoring devices.
Fabrication of SnO2-TiO2-Ti3C2Tx hybrids with multiple-type heterojunctions for enhanced gas sensing performance at room temperature

Abstract:The development of high-performance chemiresistive gas sensors at room temperature is necessary and challenging for practical environmental monitoring and industrial production controlling. Combining MXene (two-dimensional transition metal carbide) with SMO (semiconductor metal oxide) is a promising strategy to enhance room-temperature gas sensing performance. However, there are few studies on the integration of MXene and multiphase SMO composites. Herein, we fabricate the SnO2-TiO2-Ti3C2Tx heterostructure sensor, which exhibits high sensitivity, low detection limit, excellent selectivity, and long-term stability for NO2 at 25 °C. Compared with the SnO2, Ti3C2Tx, and TiO2-Ti3C2Tx sensors, the significantly improved NO2 sensing performance for the SnO2-TiO2-Ti3C2Tx sensor is attributed to the synergic effects of three phases, which not only forms functionalized surfaces for the increased gas adsorption, and more importantly, produces multiple-type heterojunctions at the SnO2/TiO2 and TiO2/Ti3C2Tx interfaces because of the suitable energy band structures among the SnO2-TiO2-Ti3C2Tx three phases, resulting in the significantly enhanced electrical transduction function for the sensor. This work sheds a new avenue to improve room-temperature gas sensing performance by coupling multiple types of heterojunctions in the SMO-MXene hybrid sensor.

Design of Hetero-Nanostructures on MoS2 Nanosheets To Boost NO2 Room-Temperature Sensing

Abstract:Molybdenum disulfide (MoS2), as a promising gas-sensing material, has gained intense interest because of its large surface-to-volume ratio, air stability, and various active sites for functionalization. However, MoS2-based gas sensors still suffer from low sensitivity, slow response, and weak recovery at room temperature, especially for NO2. Fabrication of heterostructures may be an effective way to modulate the intrinsic electronic properties of MoS2 nanosheets (NSs), thereby achieving high sensitivity and excellent recovery properties. In this work, we design a novel p-n hetero-nanostructure on MoS2 NSs using interface engineering via a simple wet chemical method. After surface modification with zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO NPs), the MoS2/ZnO hetero-nanostructure is endowed with an excellent response (5 ppm nitrogen dioxide, 3050%), which is 11 times greater than that of pure MoS2 NSs. To the best of our knowledge, such a response value is much higher than the response values reported for MoS2 gas sensors. Moreover, the fabricated hetero-nanostructure also improves recoverability to more than 90%, which is rare for room-temperature gas sensors. Our optimal sensor also possesses the characteristics of an ultrafast response time of 40 s, a reliable long-term stability within 10 weeks, an excellent selectivity, and a low detection concentration of 50 ppb. The enhanced sensing performances of the MoS2/ZnO hetero-nanostructure can be ascribed to unique 2D/0D hetero-nanostructures, synergistic effects, and p-n heterojunctions between ZnO NPs and MoS2 NSs. Such achievements of MoS2/ZnO hetero-nanostructure sensors imply that it is possible to use this novel nanostructure in ultrasensitive sensor applications.
Black phosphorus quantum dots modified monolayer Ti3C2Tx nanosheet for field-effect transistor gas sensor

Abstract:Ti3C2Tx MXene recently draws increasing attention in gas sensors, but their sensing performances, e.g., sensitivity, specificity, and ambient environment applicability, still needs improvement to meet the real application requirement. Herein, a black phosphorus quantum dots (BP QDs) modified Ti3C2Tx nanosheet (BQ/Ti3C2Tx) prepared by van der Waals self-assembly method is reported and applied as the sensing channel in field-effect transistor (FET) sensor. This sensor shows excellent NO2 detection performance at room temperature in terms of wide linear detection range (50 ppb to 10 ppm), short response time, and high specificity. Moreover, two important factors in practical gas detection, i.e., humidity and temperature, are systematically investigated. An efficient calibration strategy is proposed to eliminate the humidity effect, ensuring the accuracy of NO2 detection. The mechanism study confirms that the enhanced sensitivity and selectivity are due to the increased adsorption energy of BQ/Ti3C2Tx for target gas molecules and the forming of P-O-Ti bond. This study offers new insights in the development of sensitive, selective, and reliable gas sensors with functionalized MXene materials.

However, the challenges of sensitivity, recoverability and stability still need to be overcome for the rapidly developing fields of TMD based gas sensors. With the general advantages of 2D nanomaterials, construction of 2D TMD based heterostructure is an effective approach for improving their sensing performance by the synergistic effects of hybridization. Herein, we design a novel tungsten disulfide (WS2)/zinc sulfide (ZnS) based TMD heterostructure to realize quick and reversible nitrogen dioxide (NO2) detection at room temperature (25 degrees C). Specifically, the engineered 2D/0D WS2/ZnS p-n heterostructure gives a desired response of 32.5 to 5 ppm NO2 with a fast response speed of 4 s, which is dramatically enhanced compared with that of pure WS2 nanosheets. More importantly, WS2/ZnS heterostructure based gas sensor can achieve full recovery state after each sensing cycle without using external energies, showing an excellent recyclability at room temperature. The optimal sensor also exhibits low detection concentration of 10 ppb, high selectivity as well as outstanding long-term stability. Such impressive features originating from the synergistic effects of WS2/ZnS heterostructure have been discussed in detail from the geometrical, electronic and chemical effects. These outstanding sensing properties of WS2/ZnS heterostructure sensor imply the possibility of using this novel nanostructure in highly efficient NO2 room temperature sensing applications.
Synergistic Etching and Hydrogen Bonding-Induced Self-Assembly of MXene/MOF Hybrid Aerogel for Flexible Room-Temperature Gas Sensing

Abstract:Limited by insufficient active sites and restricted mechanical strength, designing reliable and wearable gas sensors with high activity and ductility remains a challenge for detecting hazardous gases. In this work, a thermally induced and solvent-assisted oxyanion etching strategy was implemented for selective pore opening in a rigid microporous Cu-based metal-organic framework (referred to as CuM). A conductive CuM/MXene aerogel was then self-assembled through cooperative hydrogen bonding interactions between the carbonyl oxygen atom in PVP grafted on the surface of defect-rich Cu-BTC and the surface functional hydroxyl group on MXene. A flexible NO2 sensing performance using the CuM/MXene aerogel hybridized sodium alginate hydrogel is finally achieved, demonstrating extraordinary sensitivity (S = 52.47 toward 50 ppm of NO2), good selectivity, and rapid response/recovery time (0.9/4.5 s) at room temperature. Compared with commercial sensors, the relative error is less than 7.7%, thereby exhibiting significant potential for application in monitoring toxic and harmful gases. This work not only provides insights for guiding rational synthesis of ideal structure models from MOF composites but also inspires the development of high-performance flexible gas sensors for potential multiscenario applications.

Abstract:Nitrogen dioxide (NO2) is a toxic gas species that poses a great threat to the environment and human health. There are still significant challenges in detecting NO2 gas at room temperature. In this work, 2H-MoS2 nanosheets with controlled morphology were grown on the surface of the few-layer Ti3C2Tx MXene by hydrothermal synthesis and formed unique micro architecture, which aims to complete room temperature detection of NO2. The gas sensors based on the 2H-MoS2/ Ti3C2Tx MXene composites have achieved a high response (65.6%) to 100 ppm NO2 gas at room temperature, which is significantly improved compared with the pure MoS2. The excellent NO2 response and selective properties of 2H-MoS2/Ti3C2Tx MXene composites are attributed to the fast channels for carrier transporting and abundant active sites between 2H-MoS2 and few-layer Ti3C2Tx MXene. The improved sensing performance of the two-dimensional (2D) nanocomposite also provides novel avenues for the modification of other 2D materials and the future development of room temperature gas sensors.
Fast and Recoverable NO2 Detection Achieved by Assembling ZnO on Ti3C2Tx MXene Nanosheets under UV Illumination at Room Temperature.

Abstract:Recently, Ti3C2Tx MXenes have begun to receive attention in the field of gas sensors owing to their characteristics of high conductivity and abundant surface functional groups. However, Ti3C2Tx-based gas sensors still suffer from the drawbacks of low sensitivity and sluggish response/recovery speed towards target gases, limiting their development in further applications. In this work, Ti3C2Tx-ZnO nanosheet hybrids were fabricated through a simple sonication method. The Ti3C2Tx-ZnO nanosheet hybrids exhibited a short recovery time (10 s) under UV (ultraviolet) illumination, a short response time (22 s), a high sensitivity (367.63% to 20 ppm NO2) and selectivity. Furthermore, the Ti3C2Tx-ZnO sensor has prominent anti-humidity properties, as well as superior reproducibility in multiple tests. The abundant active sites in the Ti3C2Tx-ZnO nanosheet hybrids, including surface groups (-F, -OH, -O) of Ti3C2Tx and oxygen vacancies of ZnO, the formation of Schottky barriers between Ti3C2Tx and ZnO nanosheets and the rich photogenerated charge carriers of ZnO under UV illumination, together result in excellent gas-sensing performance. Density functional theory calculations have been further employed to explore the sensing performance of Ti3C2Tx and ZnO nanosheets, showing strong interactions existing between the NO2 and ZnO nanosheets. The main adsorption sites for NO2 were present on the ZnO nanosheets, while the Ti3C2Tx played the role of the conductive path to accelerate the transformation of charge carriers. Our work can provide an effective way for improving the gas-sensing performances of Ti3C2Tx-based gas sensors.

Abstract:Nitrogen dioxide (NO 2 ) sensors experience the drawback of requiring high operating temperatures because of the low charge transfer ability of gas-sensing materials. Herein, an advanced NO 2 sensor resistant to interference is designed using the interfacial energy barriers of a hierarchical CuO/ZnO composite. With the benefits of abundant desirable defect features, and the amplification effect of heterojunctions, the sensor based on CuO/ZnO composite with 10% Cu(CH 3 COO) 2 ·H 2 O (S2) shows outstanding performance in terms of faster response and recovery time (1.8-fold/1.1-fold), higher response (3.1-fold), and lower power consumption (140°C decrease) compared to the pristine ZnO sensor. Furthermore, the composite sensor exhibits long-term stability and reproducibility, indicating the potential promise of CuO/ZnO heterojunctions in interference-resistant detection of low-concentration NO 2 in real applications. This study not only provides a rational solution to designing advanced gas sensors by tuning the interfacial energy barriers of heterojunctions, but also provides a fundamental understanding of CuO structures in the gas-sensing field.
