Abstract:Background Non-invasive imaging modalities offer a great deal of clinically significant information that aid in the diagnosis of various medical conditions. Coupled with the never-before-seen capabilities of Artificial Intelligence (AI), uncharted territories that offer novel innovative diagnostics are reached. This systematic review compiled all studies that utilized AI in Nailfold Capillaroscopy as a future diagnostic tool. Methods and Findings Five databases for medical publications were searched using the keywords artificial intelligence, machine learning, deep learning and nailfold capillaroscopy to return 105 studies. After applying the eligibility criteria, 10 studies were selected for the final analysis. Data was extracted into tables that addressed population characteristics, AI model development and nature and results of their respective performance. We found supervised deep learning approaches to be the most commonly used (n = 8). Systemic Sclerosis was the most commonly studied disease (n = 6). Sample size ranged from 17,126 images obtained from 289 participants to 50 images from 50 participants. Ground truth was determined either by experts labelling (n = 6) or known clinical status (n = 4). Significant variation was noticed in model training, testing and feature extraction, and therefore the reporting of model performance. Recall, precision and Area Under the Curve were the most used metrics to report model performance. Execution times ranged from 0.064 to 120 seconds per image. Only two models offered future predictions besides the diagnostic output. Conclusions AI has demonstrated a truly remarkable potential in the interpretation of Nailfold Capillaroscopy by providing physicians with an intelligent decision-supportive tool for improved diagnostics and prediction. With more validation studies, this potential can be translated to daily clinical practice.

Deep Learning-Based Diagnosis Models for Onychomycosis in Dermoscopy.

Abstract:BACKGROUND:Onychomycosis is a common disease. Emerging noninvasive, real-time techniques such as dermoscopy and deep convolutional neural networks have been proposed for the diagnosis of onychomycosis. However, deep learning application in dermoscopic images has not been reported.OBJECTIVES:To explore the establishment of deep learning-based diagnostic models for onychomycosis in dermoscopy to improve the diagnostic efficiency and accuracy.METHODS:We evaluated the dermoscopic patterns of onychomycosis diagnosed at Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hospital, Guangzhou, China, from May 2019 to February 2021 and included nail psoriasis and traumatic onychodystrophy as control groups. Based on the dermoscopic images and the characteristic dermoscopic patterns of onychomycosis, we gain the faster region-based convolutional neural networks to distinguish between nail disorder and normal nail, onychomycosis and non-mycological nail disorder (nail psoriasis and traumatic onychodystrophy). The diagnostic performance is compared between deep learning-based diagnosis models and dermatologists.RESULTS:All of 1,155 dermoscopic images were collected, including onychomycosis (603 images), nail psoriasis (221 images), traumatic onychodystrophy (104 images) and normal cases (227 images). Statistical analyses revealed subungual keratosis, distal irregular termination, longitudinal striae, jagged edge, and marble-like turbid area, and cone-shaped keratosis were of high specificity (>82%) for onychomycosis diagnosis. The deep learning-based diagnosis models (ensemble model) showed test accuracy /specificity/ sensitivity /Youden index of (95.7%/98.8%/82.1%/0.809) and (87.5%/93.0%/78.5%/0.715) for nail disorder and onychomycosis. The diagnostic performance for onychomycosis using ensemble model was superior to 54 dermatologists.CONCLUSIONS:Our study demonstrated that onychomycosis had distinctive dermoscopic patterns, compared with nail psoriasis and traumatic onychodystrophy. The deep learning-based diagnosis models showed a diagnostic accuracy of onychomycosis, superior to dermatologists.

Abstract:The diagnosis of superficial fungal infections in dermatology is still mostly based on manual direct microscopic examination with Potassium Hydroxide (KOH) solution. However, this method can be time consuming and its diagnostic accuracy rates vary widely depending on the clinician's experience. With the increase of neural network applications in the field of clinical microscopy, it is now possible to automate such manual processes increasing both efficiency and accuracy. This study presents a deep neural network structure that enables the rapid solutions for these problems and can perform automatic fungi detection in grayscale images without dyes. 160 microscopic field photographs containing the fungal element, obtained from patients with onychomycosis, and 297 microscopic field photographs containing dissolved keratin obtained from normal nails were collected. Smaller patches containing 4234 fungi and 4981 keratin were extracted from these images. In order to detect fungus and keratin, VGG16 and InceptionV3 models were developed. The VGG16 model had 95.98% accuracy, and the area under the curve (AUC) value of 0.9930, while the InceptionV3 model had 95.90% accuracy and the AUC value of 0.9917. However, average accuracy and AUC value of clinicians is 72.8% and 0.87, respectively. This deep learning model allows the development of an automated system that can detect fungi within microscopic images.

Abstract:Abstract Background Medical research, driven by advancing technologies like Artificial Intelligence (AI), is transforming healthcare. Dermatology, known for its visual nature, benefits from AI, especially in dermatopathology with digitized slides. This review explores into AI's role, challenges, opportunities, and future potential in enhancing dermatopathological diagnosis and care. Materials and Methodology Adhering to PRISMA and Cochrane Handbook standards, this systematic review explored AI's function in dermatopathology. It employed an interdisciplinary method, encompassing diverse study types and comprehensive database searches. Inclusion criteria encompassed peer-reviewed articles from 2000 to 2023, with a focus on practical AI use in dermatopathology. Results Numerous studies have investigated AI's potential in dermatopathology. We reviewed 112 papers. Notable applications include AI classifying histopathological images of nevi and melanomas, although challenges exist regarding subtype differentiation and generalizability. AI achieved high accuracy in melanoma recognition from formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded samples but faced limitations due to small datasets. Deep learning algorithms showed diagnostic accuracy for specific skin conditions, but challenges persisted, such as small sample sizes and the need for prospective validation. Conclusion This systematic review underscores AI's potential in enhancing dermatopathology for better diagnosis and patient care. Addressing challenges like limited datasets and potential biases is essential. Future directions involve expanding datasets, conducting validation studies, promoting interdisciplinary collaboration, and creating patient-centred AI tools to enhance dermatopathology's accuracy, accessibility, and patient-focused care.

Abstract:Artificial intelligence (AI) has seen significant progress in medical diagnostics, particularly in image and video analysis. This review focuses on the application of AI in analyzing in vivo confocal microscopy (IVCM) images for corneal diseases. The cornea, as an exposed and delicate part of the body, necessitates the precise diagnoses of various conditions. Convolutional neural networks (CNNs), a key component of deep learning, are a powerful tool for image data analysis. This review highlights AI applications in diagnosing keratitis, dry eye disease, and diabetic corneal neuropathy. It discusses the potential of AI in detecting infectious agents, analyzing corneal nerve morphology, and identifying the subtle changes in nerve fiber characteristics in diabetic corneal neuropathy. However, challenges still remain, including limited datasets, overfitting, low-quality images, and unrepresentative training datasets. This review explores augmentation techniques and the importance of feature engineering to address these challenges. Despite the progress made, challenges are still present, such as the "black-box" nature of AI models and the need for explainable AI (XAI). Expanding datasets, fostering collaborative efforts, and developing user-friendly AI tools are crucial for enhancing the acceptance and integration of AI into clinical practice.

Abstract:Background: The objective of this study is to systematically analyze the current state of the literature regarding novel artificial intelligence (AI) machine learning models utilized in non-invasive imaging for the early detection of nonmelanoma skin cancers. Furthermore, we aimed to assess their potential clinical relevance by evaluating the accuracy, sensitivity, and specificity of each algorithm and assessing for the risk of bias. Methods: Two reviewers screened the MEDLINE, Cochrane, PubMed, and Embase databases for peer-reviewed studies that focused on AI-based skin cancer classification involving nonmelanoma skin cancers and were published between 2018 and 2023. The search terms included skin neoplasms, nonmelanoma, basal-cell carcinoma, squamous-cell carcinoma, diagnostic techniques and procedures, artificial intelligence, algorithms, computer systems, dermoscopy, reflectance confocal microscopy, and optical coherence tomography. Based on the search results, only studies that directly answered the review objectives were included and the efficacy measures for each were recorded. A QUADAS-2 risk assessment for bias in included studies was then conducted. Results: A total of 44 studies were included in our review; 40 utilizing dermoscopy, 3 using reflectance confocal microscopy (RCM), and 1 for hyperspectral epidermal imaging (HEI). The average accuracy of AI algorithms applied to all imaging modalities combined was 86.80%, with the same average for dermoscopy. Only one of the three studies applying AI to RCM measured accuracy, with a result of 87%. Accuracy was not measured in regard to AI based HEI interpretation. Conclusion: AI algorithms exhibited an overall favorable performance in the diagnosis of nonmelanoma skin cancer via noninvasive imaging techniques. Ultimately, further research is needed to isolate pooled diagnostic accuracy for nonmelanoma skin cancers as many testing datasets also include melanoma and other pigmented lesions.

A decision support system for the detection of cutaneous fungal infections using artificial intelligence

Abstract:Cutaneous fungal infections are one of the most common skin conditions, hence, the burden of determining fungal elements upon microscopic examination with periodic acid-Schiff (PAS) and Gomori methenamine silver (GMS) stains, is very time consuming. Despite some morphological variability posing challenges to training artificial intelligence (AI)-based solutions, these structures are favored potential targets, enabling the recruitment of promising AI-based technologies. Herein, we present a novel AI solution for identifying skin fungal infections, potentially providing a decision support system for pathologists. Skin biopsies of patients diagnosed with a cutaneous fungal infection at the Sheba Medical Center, Israel between 2014 and 2023, were used. Samples were stained with PAS and GMS and digitized by the Philips IntelliSite scanner. DeePathology® STUDIO fungal elements were annotated and deemed as ground truth data after an overall revision by two specialist pathologists. Subsequently, they were used to create an AI-based solution, which has been further validated in other regions of interests. The study participants were divided into two cohorts. In the first cohort, the overall sensitivity of the algorithm was 0.8, specificity 0.97, F1 score 0.78; in the second, the overall sensitivity of the algorithm was 0.93, specificity 0.99, F1 score 0.95. The results obtained are encouraging as proof of concept for an AI-based fungi detection algorithm. DeePathology® STUDIO can be employed as a decision support system for pathologists when diagnosing a cutaneous fungal infection using PAS and GMS stains, thereby, saving time and money.

Abstract:This paper provides a comprehensive overview of image-based techniques, particularly focusing on their applications and advancements in the context of nail disorders. Nowadays, high-resolution digital cameras and dermoscopes enable dermatologists to capture detailed images of nail abnormalities, facilitating early diagnosis and meticulous tracking of disease progression. Onychoscopy is now a routine technique with well-known criteria for the diagnosis, but recent developments allow us to visualize certain diseases better. Imaging modalities like high-frequency ultrasound, magnetic resonance imaging, optical coherence tomography and confocal microscopy are being increasingly adopted for their superior diagnostic capabilities. These techniques are described in their technology, scanning protocols, normal findings, advantages and limitations. Moreover, the integration of technology in patient education has fostered a more informed patient population, capable of actively participating in their disease monitoring and treatment regimens. Proper training, validation, regulation and ethical considerations are, however, essential when integrating technology into healthcare practices. Imaging technologies that present the potential to add critical anatomical information to clinical diagnoses within reasonable costs and are available worldwide are the ones that will probably be used the most.

Abstract:The prevalence of dermatological conditions in primary care, coupled with challenges such as dermatologist shortages and rising consultation costs, highlights the need for innovative solutions. Artificial intelligence (AI) holds promise for improving the diagnostic analysis of skin lesion images, potentially enhancing patient care in primary settings. This systematic review following PRISMA guidelines examined primary studies (2012–2022) assessing AI algorithms' diagnostic accuracy for skin diseases in primary care. Studies were screened for eligibility based on their availability in the English language and exclusion criteria, with risk of bias evaluated using QUADAS-2. PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science were searched. Fifteen studies (2019–2022), primarily from Europe and the USA, focusing on diagnostic accuracy were included. Sensitivity ranged from 58% to 96.1%, with accuracies varying from 0.41 to 0.93. AI applications encompassed triage and diagnostic support across diverse skin conditions in primary care settings, involving both patients and primary care professionals. While AI demonstrates potential for enhancing the accuracy of skin disease diagnostics in primary care, further research is imperative to address study heterogeneity and ensure algorithm reliability across diverse populations. Future investigations should prioritise robust dataset development and consider representative patient samples. Overall, AI may improve dermatological diagnosis in primary care, but careful consideration of algorithm limitations and implementation strategies is required.

Analysis of Artificial Intelligence-Based Approaches Applied to Non-Invasive Imaging for Early Detection of Melanoma: A Systematic Review

Abstract:Background: Melanoma, the deadliest form of skin cancer, poses a significant public health challenge worldwide. Early detection is crucial for improved patient outcomes. Non-invasive skin imaging techniques allow for improved diagnostic accuracy; however, their use is often limited due to the need for skilled practitioners trained to interpret images in a standardized fashion. Recent innovations in artificial intelligence (AI)-based techniques for skin lesion image interpretation show potential for the use of AI in the early detection of melanoma. Objective: The aim of this study was to evaluate the current state of AI-based techniques used in combination with non-invasive diagnostic imaging modalities including reflectance confocal microscopy (RCM), optical coherence tomography (OCT), and dermoscopy. We also aimed to determine whether the application of AI-based techniques can lead to improved diagnostic accuracy of melanoma. Methods: A systematic search was conducted via the Medline/PubMed, Cochrane, and Embase databases for eligible publications between 2018 and 2022. Screening methods adhered to the 2020 version of the PRISMA (Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses) guidelines. Included studies utilized AI-based algorithms for melanoma detection and directly addressed the review objectives. Results: We retrieved 40 papers amongst the three databases. All studies directly comparing the performance of AI-based techniques with dermatologists reported the superior or equivalent performance of AI-based techniques in improving the detection of melanoma. In studies directly comparing algorithm performance on dermoscopy images to dermatologists, AI-based algorithms achieved a higher ROC (>80%) in the detection of melanoma. In these comparative studies using dermoscopic images, the mean algorithm sensitivity was 83.01% and the mean algorithm specificity was 85.58%. Studies evaluating machine learning in conjunction with OCT boasted accuracy of 95%, while studies evaluating RCM reported a mean accuracy rate of 82.72%. Conclusions: Our results demonstrate the robust potential of AI-based techniques to improve diagnostic accuracy and patient outcomes through the early identification of melanoma. Further studies are needed to assess the generalizability of these AI-based techniques across different populations and skin types, improve standardization in image processing, and further compare the performance of AI-based techniques with board-certified dermatologists to evaluate clinical applicability.

Artificial intelligence to classify ear disease from otoscopy: A systematic review and meta-analysis

Abstract:Objectives: To summarise the accuracy of artificial intelligence (AI) computer vision algorithms to classify ear disease from otoscopy. Design: Systematic review and meta-analysis. Methods: Using the PRISMA guidelines, nine online databases were searched for articles that used AI computer vision algorithms developed from various methods (convolutional neural networks, artificial neural networks, support vector machines, decision trees and k-nearest neighbours) to classify otoscopic images. Diagnostic classes of interest: normal tympanic membrane, acute otitis media (AOM), otitis media with effusion (OME), chronic otitis media (COM) with or without perforation, cholesteatoma and canal obstruction. Main outcome measures: Accuracy to correctly classify otoscopic images compared to otolaryngologists (ground truth). The Quality Assessment of Diagnostic Accuracy Studies Version 2 tool was used to assess the quality of methodology and risk of bias. Results: Thirty-nine articles were included. Algorithms achieved 90.7% (95%CI: 90.1-91.3%) accuracy to difference between normal or abnormal otoscopy images in 14 studies. The most common multiclassification algorithm (3 or more diagnostic classes) achieved 97.6% (95%CI: 97.3-97.9%) accuracy to differentiate between normal, AOM and OME in three studies. AI algorithms outperformed human assessors to classify otoscopy images achieving 93.4% (95%CI: 90.5-96.4%) versus 73.2% (95%CI: 67.9-78.5%) accuracy in three studies. Convolutional neural networks achieved the highest accuracy compared to other classification methods. Conclusion: AI can classify ear disease from otoscopy. A concerted effort is required to establish a comprehensive and reliable otoscopy database for algorithm training. An AI-supported otoscopy system may assist health care workers, trainees and primary care practitioners with less otology experience identify ear disease.
The Present and Future of Artificial Intelligence-Based Medical Image in Diabetes Mellitus: Focus on Analytical Methods and Limitations of Clinical Use

Abstract:Artificial intelligence (AI)-based diagnostic technology using medical images can be used to increase examination accessibility and support clinical decision-making for screening and diagnosis. To determine a machine learning algorithm for diabetes complications, a literature review of studies using medical image-based AI technology was conducted using the National Library of Medicine PubMed, and the Excerpta Medica databases. Lists of studies using diabetes diagnostic images and AI as keywords were combined. In total, 227 appropriate studies were selected. Diabetic retinopathy studies using the AI model were the most frequent (85.0%, 193/227 cases), followed by diabetic foot (7.9%, 18/227 cases) and diabetic neuropathy (2.7%, 6/227 cases). The studies used open datasets (42.3%, 96/227 cases) or directly constructed data from fundoscopy or optical coherence tomography (57.7%, 131/227 cases). Major limitations in AI-based detection of diabetes complications using medical images were the lack of datasets (36.1%, 82/227 cases) and severity misclassification (26.4%, 60/227 cases). Although it remains difficult to use and fully trust AI-based imaging analysis technology clinically, it reduces clinicians' time and labor, and the expectations from its decision-support roles are high. Various data collection and synthesis data technology developments according to the disease severity are required to solve data imbalance.

Abstract:Artificial Intelligence is a rapidly expanding field within computer science that encompasses the emulation of human intelligence by machines. Machine learning and deep learning - two primary data-driven pattern analysis approaches under the umbrella of artificial intelligence - has created considerable interest in the last few decades. The evolution of technology has resulted in a substantial amount of artificial intelligence research on ophthalmic and neurodegenerative disease diagnosis using retinal images. Various artificial intelligence-based techniques have been used for diagnostic purposes, including traditional machine learning, deep learning, and their combinations. Presented here is a review of the literature covering the last 10 years on this topic, discussing the use of artificial intelligence in analysing data from different modalities and their combinations for the diagnosis of glaucoma and neurodegenerative diseases. The performance of published artificial intelligence methods varies due to several factors, yet the results suggest that such methods can potentially facilitate clinical diagnosis. Generally, the accuracy of artificial intelligence-assisted diagnosis ranges from 67-98%, and the area under the sensitivity-specificity curve (AUC) ranges from 0.71-0.98, which outperforms typical human performance of 71.5% accuracy and 0.86 area under the curve. This indicates that artificial intelligence-based tools can provide clinicians with useful information that would assist in providing improved diagnosis. The review suggests that there is room for improvement of existing artificial intelligence-based models using retinal imaging modalities before they are incorporated into clinical practice.

Abstract:With the rapid development of computer technology, the application of artificial intelligence (AI) in ophthalmology research has gained prominence in modern medicine. Artificial intelligence-related research in ophthalmology previously focused on the screening and diagnosis of fundus diseases, particularly diabetic retinopathy, age-related macular degeneration, and glaucoma. Since fundus images are relatively fixed, their standards are easy to unify. Artificial intelligence research related to ocular surface diseases has also increased. The main issue with research on ocular surface diseases is that the images involved are complex, with many modalities. Therefore, this review aims to summarize current artificial intelligence research and technologies used to diagnose ocular surface diseases such as pterygium, keratoconus, infectious keratitis, and dry eye to identify mature artificial intelligence models that are suitable for research of ocular surface diseases and potential algorithms that may be used in the future.

Abstract:Background: Microbiologists are valued for their time-honed skills in image analysis, including identification of pathogens and inflammatory context in Gram stains, ova and parasite preparations, blood smears and histopathologic slides. They also must classify colony growth on a variety of agar plates for triage and assessment. Recent advances in image analysis, in particular application of artificial intelligence (AI), have the potential to automate these processes and support more timely and accurate diagnoses. Objectives: To review current AI-based image analysis as applied to clinical microbiology; and to discuss future trends in the field. Sources: Material sourced for this review included peer-reviewed literature annotated in the PubMed or Google Scholar databases and preprint articles from bioRxiv. Articles describing use of AI for analysis of images used in infectious disease diagnostics were reviewed. Content: We describe application of machine learning towards analysis of different types of microbiologic image data. Specifically, we outline progress in smear and plate interpretation as well as the potential for AI diagnostic applications in the clinical microbiology laboratory. Implications: Combined with automation, we predict that AI algorithms will be used in the future to prescreen and preclassify image data, thereby increasing productivity and enabling more accurate diagnoses through collaboration between the AI and the microbiologist. Once developed, image-based AI analysis is inexpensive and amenable to local and remote diagnostic use.
Periodontitis diagnosis: A review of current and future trends in artificial intelligence

Abstract:BACKGROUND: Artificial intelligence (AI) acts as the state-of-the-art in periodontitis diagnosis in dentistry. Current diagnostic challenges include errors due to a lack of experienced dentists, limited time for radiograph analysis, and mandatory reporting, impacting care quality, cost, and efficiency. OBJECTIVE: This review aims to evaluate the current and future trends in AI for diagnosing periodontitis. METHODS: A thorough literature review was conducted following PRISMA guidelines. We searched databases including PubMed, Scopus, Wiley Online Library, and ScienceDirect for studies published between January 2018 and December 2023. Keywords used in the search included "artificial intelligence," "panoramic radiograph," "periodontitis," "periodontal disease," and "diagnosis." RESULTS: The review included 12 studies from an initial 211 records. These studies used advanced models, particularly convolutional neural networks (CNNs), demonstrating accuracy rates for periodontal bone loss detection ranging from 0.76 to 0.98. Methodologies included deep learning hybrid methods, automated identification systems, and machine learning classifiers, enhancing diagnostic precision and efficiency. CONCLUSIONS: Integrating AI innovations in periodontitis diagnosis enhances diagnostic accuracy and efficiency, providing a robust alternative to conventional methods. These technologies offer quicker, less labor-intensive, and more precise alternatives to classical approaches. Future research should focus on improving AI model reliability and generalizability to ensure widespread clinical adoption.

Comparison of diagnostic methods for onychomycosis, and proposal of a diagnostic algorithm

Abstract:Background: Traditionally, the gold standard for diagnosis of onychomycosis has been the combination of direct microscopy with potassium hydroxide (KOH) staining and fungal culture. However, several studies have suggested that periodic-acid-Schiff (PAS) staining of nail-plate clippings may be a very sensitive method for the diagnosis of onychomycosis. Aim: To compare the sensitivities of direct microscopy with KOH, fungal culture and PAS staining of nail-plate clippings, and to define an efficient, high-yield and cost-effective diagnostic strategy for the diagnosis of onychomycosis in the clinical setting. Methods: We evaluated a total of 493 patients with clinically suspected onychomycosis. Group A comprised 400 patient samples, evaluated using fungal culture and PAS stain, while group B comprised 93 patient samples evaluated using KOH, fungal culture and PAS. Diagnosis of onychomycosis was defined as clinical morphology plus at least one positive test result. Results: In group A, sensitivities of fungal culture and PAS were 49.5% and 93.1% (P < 0.005), respectively. In group B, the most sensitive single test was PAS (88.2%) followed by KOH (55.9%) and fungal culture (29.4%). The combination of fungal culture and PAS (94.1%) was significantly (P < 0.001) more sensitive than that of KOH and culture (72.1%). Conclusion: PAS staining of nail clippings is much more sensitive than KOH and fungal culture for the diagnosis of onychomycosis. Based on our results, we propose a diagnostic algorithm for onychomycosis that takes into consideration the sensitivity, cost-effectiveness and necessary time for each test.

Abstract:Mesoporous spinel nickel cobaltite (NiCo2O4) nanostructures were synthesized via a facile chemical deposition method coupled with a simple post-annealing process. The physicochemical properties were characterized via X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray photoelectron spectra (XPS) and nitrogen sorption measurements. The electrocatalytic performances were investigated by cyclic voltammetry (CV), chronoamperometry (CA) and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) tests. The obtained NiCo₂O₄ materials exhibit typical agglomerate mesoporous nanostructures with a large surface area (190.1 m(2) g(-1)) and high mesopore volume (0.943 cm(3) g(-1)). Remarkably, the NiCo₂O₄ shows much higher catalytic activity, lower overpotential, better stability and greater tolerance towards urea electro-oxidation compared to those of cobalt oxide (Co₃O₄) synthesized by the same procedure. The NiCo₂O₄ electrode delivers a current density of 136 mA cm(-2) mg(-1) at 0.7 V (vs. Hg/HgO) in 1 M KOH and 0.33 M urea electrolytes accompanied with a desirable stability. The impressive electrocatalytic activity is largely ascribed to the high intrinsic electronic conductivity, superior mesoporous nanostructures and rich surface Ni active species of the NiCo₂O₄ materials, which can largely boost the interfacial electroactive sites and charge transfer rates for urea electro-oxidation, indicating promising applications in future wastewater remediation, hydrogen production and fuel cells.
