Abstract:Abstract Background Medical research, driven by advancing technologies like Artificial Intelligence (AI), is transforming healthcare. Dermatology, known for its visual nature, benefits from AI, especially in dermatopathology with digitized slides. This review explores into AI's role, challenges, opportunities, and future potential in enhancing dermatopathological diagnosis and care. Materials and Methodology Adhering to PRISMA and Cochrane Handbook standards, this systematic review explored AI's function in dermatopathology. It employed an interdisciplinary method, encompassing diverse study types and comprehensive database searches. Inclusion criteria encompassed peer-reviewed articles from 2000 to 2023, with a focus on practical AI use in dermatopathology. Results Numerous studies have investigated AI's potential in dermatopathology. We reviewed 112 papers. Notable applications include AI classifying histopathological images of nevi and melanomas, although challenges exist regarding subtype differentiation and generalizability. AI achieved high accuracy in melanoma recognition from formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded samples but faced limitations due to small datasets. Deep learning algorithms showed diagnostic accuracy for specific skin conditions, but challenges persisted, such as small sample sizes and the need for prospective validation. Conclusion This systematic review underscores AI's potential in enhancing dermatopathology for better diagnosis and patient care. Addressing challenges like limited datasets and potential biases is essential. Future directions involve expanding datasets, conducting validation studies, promoting interdisciplinary collaboration, and creating patient-centred AI tools to enhance dermatopathology's accuracy, accessibility, and patient-focused care.

We explore the role of AI in pathology, with a specific focus on dermatopathology and neoplastic dermatopathology. AI, encompassing machine learning and deep learning, has demonstrated its potential in tasks ranging from diagnostic applications on whole slide imaging to predictive and prognostic functions in skin pathology. In dermatopathology, studies have assessed AI's ability to identify skin lesions, classify melanomas, and improve diagnostic accuracy. Results indicate that AI, particularly convolutional neural networks, can outperform human pathologists in terms of sensitivity and specificity. AI aids in predicting disease outcomes, identifying aggressive tumors, and differentiating between various skin conditions. Neoplastic dermatopathology showcases AI's prowess in classifying melanocytic lesions, discriminating between melanomas and nevi, and aids dermatopathologists in making accurate diagnoses. Studies emphasize the reproducibility and diagnostic aid that AI provides, especially in challenging cases. Despite the advancements, we have stressed the importance of collaboration between medical professionals, computer scientists, bioinformaticians, and engineers to harness AI's benefits and acknowledging its limitations and risks. The integration of AI into dermatopathology holds great promise, positioning it as a valuable tool rather than as a replacement for human expertise.
Intranasal delivery of nicardipine in the rat.

Abstract:The intranasal absorption of nicardipine hydrochloride was characterized in an in vivo rat model system in which the normal mechanisms of mucociliary clearance and drainage of an instilled dose were not physically altered. The results obtained in this manner, therefore, are expected to be predicative of the delivery and absorption dynamics exhibited in the nasal mucosa of primates and humans. Intranasal delivery of nicardipine was studied in male rats using this model on single-dose administration of 1.0 mg/kg, and compared with both oral and intravenous administration. The effect of the addition of a viscosity agent, hydroxyethyl cellulose, on plasma levels following nasal delivery was also examined. Nicardipine plasma levels were determined by a rapid and specific reversed-phase HPLC method with electrochemical detection that employed nifedipine as an electroactive internal standard in the analysis. The limit of quantitation for nicardipine at 1.0 V versus Ag/AgCl was 8 ng/mL and the linear dynamic range was 15-150 ng/mL. Following intravenous administration the area under the plasma concentration curve was 5110 ng . min/mL as compared to 3730 ng . min/mL following intranasal dosing. This corresponds to a bioavailability of 73%. The addition of a viscosity agent to the nasal formulation was found to give a slight but statistically insignificant increase in the systemic availability (77%). Plasma levels of nicardipine following oral administration (1.0 mg/kg) were determined to be below the limit of quantitation of the analytical technique. These results therefore suggest that nasal delivery of nicardipine is a viable and efficient route of administration.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)

Abstract:Artificial Intelligence (AI) has emerged as a transformative force in the field of diagnostic dermatology, offering unprecedented capabilities in image recognition and data analysis. Despite its promise, the integration of AI into clinical practice faces multifaceted challenges that span technical, ethical, and regulatory domains. This article provides a narrative overview of the current state of AI in dermatology, tracing its historical evolution from early diagnostic tools to contemporary hybrid supervised models. We identify and categorize six critical challenges: data quality and quantity, algorithmic development and explainability, ethical considerations, clinical workflow integration, regulatory frameworks, and stakeholder collaboration. Each challenge is dissected from the perspectives of academia, industry, and healthcare providers, offering actionable recommendations for future research and implementation. We also highlight the paradigm shift in AI research, emphasizing the potential of transformer architectures in revolutionizing diagnostic methodologies. By addressing the challenges and harnessing the latest advancements, AI has the potential to significantly impact diagnostic accuracy and patient outcomes in dermatology.

Abstract:Mesoporous spinel nickel cobaltite (NiCo2O4) nanostructures were synthesized via a facile chemical deposition method coupled with a simple post-annealing process. The physicochemical properties were characterized via X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray photoelectron spectra (XPS) and nitrogen sorption measurements. The electrocatalytic performances were investigated by cyclic voltammetry (CV), chronoamperometry (CA) and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) tests. The obtained NiCo₂O₄ materials exhibit typical agglomerate mesoporous nanostructures with a large surface area (190.1 m(2) g(-1)) and high mesopore volume (0.943 cm(3) g(-1)). Remarkably, the NiCo₂O₄ shows much higher catalytic activity, lower overpotential, better stability and greater tolerance towards urea electro-oxidation compared to those of cobalt oxide (Co₃O₄) synthesized by the same procedure. The NiCo₂O₄ electrode delivers a current density of 136 mA cm(-2) mg(-1) at 0.7 V (vs. Hg/HgO) in 1 M KOH and 0.33 M urea electrolytes accompanied with a desirable stability. The impressive electrocatalytic activity is largely ascribed to the high intrinsic electronic conductivity, superior mesoporous nanostructures and rich surface Ni active species of the NiCo₂O₄ materials, which can largely boost the interfacial electroactive sites and charge transfer rates for urea electro-oxidation, indicating promising applications in future wastewater remediation, hydrogen production and fuel cells.

Abstract:Background Recent advancements in artificial intelligence (AI) have significantly impacted dermatology, particularly in diagnosing skin diseases. However, aesthetic dermatology faces unique challenges due to subjective evaluations and the lack of standardized assessment methods. Aims This review aims to explore the current state of AI in dermatology, evaluate its application in diagnosing skin conditions, and discuss the limitations of traditional evaluation methods in aesthetic dermatology. Additionally, the review proposes strategies for future integration of AI to address existing challenges. Methods A comprehensive review of AI applications in dermatology was conducted, in both diagnostic and aesthetic fields. Traditional methods such as subjective surveys and hardware devices were analyzed and compared with emerging AI technologies. The limitations of current AI models were evaluated, and the need for standardized evaluation methods and diverse datasets was identified. Results AI has shown great potential in diagnosing skin diseases, particularly skin cancer. However, in aesthetic dermatology, traditional methods remain subjective and lack standardization, therefore limiting their effectiveness. Emerging AI applications in this field show promise, but they have significant limitations due to biased datasets and inconsistent evaluation methods. Conclusions To develop the potential of AI in aesthetic dermatology, it is crucial to create standardized evaluation methods, collect diverse datasets reflecting various ethnicities and ages, and educate practitioners on AI's utility and limitations. Addressing these challenges will improve diagnostic accuracy, better patient outcomes, and help integrate AI effectively into clinical practice.

Abstract:Skin cancer is the most common type of cancer worldwide and poses a significant public health challenge. Its visible nature often leads individuals to seek medical attention, highlighting the importance of early detection for better patient outcomes. In recent years, Artificial Intelligence (AI) has shown promise in improving the detection and diagnosis of skin cancer, offering the potential to enhance clinical outcomes. A systematic review was conducted, involving a comprehensive literature search to identify studies focused on AI techniques in detecting, diagnosing, or treating skin cancer. Strict inclusion and exclusion criteria were applied to assess the eligibility of scientific articles, resulting in the selection of nine relevant studies. These studies were analyzed to address predefined research questions about the effectiveness of AI in diagnosing skin cancer. The review found that AI-assisted clinicians achieved higher sensitivity and specificity in diagnosing skin cancer than those without assistance. Various AI algorithms demonstrated high sensitivity in detecting skin cancers, highlighting their potential to support primary care clinicians in evaluating suspicious lesions. The analysis also highlighted the effectiveness of smartphone applications designed for skin cancer risk assessment, which could facilitate self-examinations and enhance early detection rates. Despite these promising findings, the field of AI in skin cancer diagnosis is still in its early stages. Challenges remain, including developing robust algorithms, addressing data quality issues, and improving the interpretability of AI-generated results. Collaboration between AI developers and healthcare professionals is crucial to ensure these tools' clinical effectiveness and safety. Abstract:Artificial intelligence (AI) based on machine learning and convolutional neuron networks (CNN) is rapidly becoming a realistic prospect in dermatology. Non-melanoma skin cancer is the most common cancer worldwide and melanoma is one of the deadliest forms of cancer. Dermoscopy has improved physicians' diagnostic accuracy for skin cancer recognition but unfortunately it remains comparatively low. AI could provide invaluable aid in the early evaluation and diagnosis of skin cancer. In the last decade, there has been a breakthrough in new research and publications in the field of AI. Studies have shown that CNN algorithms can classify skin lesions from dermoscopic images with superior or at least equivalent performance compared to clinicians. Even though AI algorithms have shown very promising results for the diagnosis of skin cancer in reader studies, their generalizability and applicability in everyday clinical practice remain elusive. Herein we attempted to summarize the potential pitfalls and challenges of AI that were underlined in reader studies and pinpoint strategies to overcome limitations in future studies. Finally, we tried to analyze the advantages and opportunities that lay ahead for a better future for dermatology and patients, with the potential use of AI in our practices.

Abstract:Abstract Long considered futuristic, artificial intelligence (AI) has slowly but surely come to prominence in medical spheres over the last 90 years. Dermatology is poised to benefit from emerging AI technologies, with its inherent visual diagnostic methods and the increasing volume of digital photographic data underscoring its suitability for AI-augmented patient care. Algorithms have been around for centuries, but it was Alan Turing who was the first to formalize algorithm and computation in the 1930s, along with cracking the Enigma code during World War II. In 1943, the first artificial neural network of electrical circuits was modelled to simulate biological neurones in the brain, a concept crucial to the success of AI today. The term ‘artificial intelligence’ was first coined by John McCarthy in 1956 at Dartmouth College. Computer-aided diagnosis was first applied in the analysis of pulmonary nodules detected in chest radiographs in 1963. MYCIN, Edward Shortliffe’s doctoral dissertation at Stanford University in the 1970s, was the first powerful use of AI, whereby a computer program correctly identified the causative bacteria in cases of bacteraemia and meningitis and even recommended antibiotic treatments. In 1998 the first Food and Drug Administration (FDA)-approved computer-aided diagnosis system was used in mammography. After the 2010s, a subfield of machine learning called deep learning emerged, and from then on AI flourished, creating meaningful applications across many fields, not least in dermatology. As dermatology is a morphological feature-dependent discipline, machine learning models are increasingly implemented as a diagnostic support tool using image analysis in areas including dermatopathology and skin cancer detection. MelaFind was the first FDA-approved digital cancer detection unit to identify melanoma, succeeded by Nevisense, and recently by DermaSensor, which was approved by the FDA in January 2024. The visual nature of dermatology lends itself well to transformative AI-augmented practice. Although in its infancy, with the correct government and regulation, AI has the potential to help practising dermatologists deliver better skincare.

Abstract:Abstract Background The integration of artificial intelligence (AI) in dermatology is revolutionizing the diagnostic methods and management strategies and hence is uplifting the overall patient care. AI technologies have shown a significant potential in automated diagnosis, severity assessment of chronic cutaneous diseases like psoriasis, and the development of comprehensive dermatological databases is helping in swift disease detection. Objective This review aims to explore the current landscape and future potential of AI in inflammatory skin diseases. It focuses on various automated diagnostic systems, the role of AI in assessment and staging of chronic inflammatory dermatological conditions, and the importance of dermatological databases. The review also addresses the various challenges associated with AI implementation. Methods A extensive literature search was conducted from databases namely, PubMed, Google Scholar, and Embase. Search terms included combinations of “artificial intelligence,” “deep learning,” “dermatology,” “automated diagnosis,” and “dermatological databases” from different field of study. Articles were selected and reviewed based on relevance and quality, highlighting studies demonstrating AI's impact on diagnosis and management. Results AI‐powered diagnostic systems have ominously advanced, offering noninvasive and accessible diagnostic tool(s) that use extensive datasets to improve accuracy and efficacy across different populations. The development of dermatological databases is fundamental for training of different AI models. Despite these advances, challenges related to data privacy, regulatory oversight, and inclusivity in AI models persist. Addressing these challenges is essential for augmenting and optimizing AI's potential in dermatology. Conclusion AI is set to transmute dermatology by augmenting diagnostic precision, customizing treatment plans, and making dermatological care more reachable, particularly in underprivileged areas. This review highlights the various advances made in AI for the diagnosis and management of inflammatory skin disorders, acknowledging the ethical and technical hurdles that need to be addressed.

Abstract:Artificial intelligence (AI) uses algorithms and large language models in computers to simulate human‐like problem‐solving and decision‐making. AI programs have recently acquired widespread popularity in the field of dermatology through the application of online tools in the assessment, diagnosis, and treatment of skin conditions. A literature review was conducted using PubMed and Google Scholar analyzing recent literature (from the last 10 years through October 2023) to evaluate current AI programs in use for dermatologic purposes, identifying challenges in this technology when applied to skin of color (SOC), and proposing future steps to enhance the role of AI in dermatologic practice. Challenges surrounding AI and its application to SOC stem from the underrepresentation of SOC in datasets and issues with image quality and standardization. With these existing issues, current AI programs inevitably do worse at identifying lesions in SOC. Additionally, only 30% of the programs identified in this review had data reported on their use in dermatology, specifically in SOC. Significant development of these applications is required for the accurate depiction of darker skin tone images in datasets. More research is warranted in the future to better understand the efficacy of AI in aiding diagnosis and treatment options for SOC patients.

We focus our discussion on methodology, AI applications for various skin diseases, limitations, and future opportunities. We review how the current image-based models are being implemented in dermatology across disease subsets, and highlight the challenges facing widespread adoption. Additionally, we discuss how the future of AI in dermatology might evolve and the emerging paradigm of large language, and multi-modal models to emphasize the importance of developing responsible, fair, and equitable models in dermatology.
Ultrafast electron trapping at the surface of semiconductor nanocrystals: excitonic and biexcitonic processes.

Abstract:Aging of semiconductor nanocrystals (NCs) is well-known to attenuate the spontaneous photoluminescence from the band edge excitonic state by introduction of nonradiative trap states formed at the NC surface. In order to explore charge carrier dynamics dictated by the surface of the NC, femtosecond pump/probe spectroscopic experiments are performed on freshly synthesized and aged CdTe NCs. These experiments reveal fast electron trapping for aged CdTe NCs from the single excitonic state (X). Pump fluence dependence with excitonic state-resolved optical pumping enables directly populating the biexcitonic state (XX), which produces further accelerated electron trapping rates. This increase in electron trapping rate triggers coherent acoustic phonons by virtue of the ultrafast impulsive time scale of the surface trapping process. The observed trapping rates are discussed in terms of electron transfer theory.

Abstract:Background This report evaluates the potential of artificial intelligence (AI) in psychodermatology, emphasizing its ability to enhance diagnostic accuracy, treatment efficacy, and personalized care. Psychodermatology, which explores the connection between mental health and skin disorders, stands to benefit from AI's advanced data analysis and pattern recognition capabilities. Materials and methods A literature search was conducted on PubMed and Google Scholar, spanning from 2004 to 2024, following PRISMA guidelines. Studies included demonstrated AI's effectiveness in predicting treatment outcomes for body dysmorphic disorder, identifying biomarkers in psoriasis and anxiety disorders, and refining therapeutic strategies. Results The review identified several studies highlighting AI's role in improving treatment outcomes and diagnostic accuracy in psychodermatology. AI was effective in predicting outcomes for body dysmorphic disorder and identifying biomarkers related to psoriasis and anxiety disorders. However, challenges such as limited dermatologist knowledge, integration difficulties, and ethical concerns regarding patient privacy were noted. Conclusion AI holds significant promise for advancing psychodermatology by improving diagnostic precision, treatment effectiveness, and personalized care. Nonetheless, realizing this potential requires large‐scale clinical validation, enhanced dataset diversity, and robust ethical frameworks. Future research should focus on these areas, with interdisciplinary collaboration essential for overcoming current challenges and optimizing patient care in psychodermatology.

Abstract:Artificial intelligence (AI) algorithms using deep learning have advanced the classification of skin disease images; however these algorithms have been mostly applied "in silico" and not validated clinically. Most dermatology AI algorithms perform binary classification tasks (e.g. malignancy versus benign lesions), but this task is not representative of dermatologists' diagnostic range. The American Academy of Dermatology Task Force on Augmented Intelligence published a position statement emphasizing the importance of clinical validation to create human-computer synergy, termed augmented intelligence (AuI). Liu et al's recent paper, "A deep learning system for differential diagnosis of skin diseases" represents a significant advancement of AI in dermatology, bringing it closer to clinical impact. However, significant issues must be addressed before this algorithm can be integrated into clinical workflow. These issues include accurate and equitable model development, defining and assessing appropriate clinical outcomes, and real-world integration.

Abstract:Background: Melanoma, the deadliest form of skin cancer, poses a significant public health challenge worldwide. Early detection is crucial for improved patient outcomes. Non-invasive skin imaging techniques allow for improved diagnostic accuracy; however, their use is often limited due to the need for skilled practitioners trained to interpret images in a standardized fashion. Recent innovations in artificial intelligence (AI)-based techniques for skin lesion image interpretation show potential for the use of AI in the early detection of melanoma. Objective: The aim of this study was to evaluate the current state of AI-based techniques used in combination with non-invasive diagnostic imaging modalities including reflectance confocal microscopy (RCM), optical coherence tomography (OCT), and dermoscopy. We also aimed to determine whether the application of AI-based techniques can lead to improved diagnostic accuracy of melanoma. Methods: A systematic search was conducted via the Medline/PubMed, Cochrane, and Embase databases for eligible publications between 2018 and 2022. Screening methods adhered to the 2020 version of the PRISMA (Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses) guidelines. Included studies utilized AI-based algorithms for melanoma detection and directly addressed the review objectives. Results: We retrieved 40 papers amongst the three databases. All studies directly comparing the performance of AI-based techniques with dermatologists reported the superior or equivalent performance of AI-based techniques in improving the detection of melanoma. In studies directly comparing algorithm performance on dermoscopy images to dermatologists, AI-based algorithms achieved a higher ROC (>80%) in the detection of melanoma. In these comparative studies using dermoscopic images, the mean algorithm sensitivity was 83.01% and the mean algorithm specificity was 85.58%. Studies evaluating machine learning in conjunction with OCT boasted accuracy of 95%, while studies evaluating RCM reported a mean accuracy rate of 82.72%. Conclusions: Our results demonstrate the robust potential of AI-based techniques to improve diagnostic accuracy and patient outcomes through the early identification of melanoma. Abstract:The development and implementation of artificial intelligence is beginning to impact the care of dermatology patients. Although the clinical application of AI in dermatology to date has largely focused on melanoma, the prevalence of non-melanoma skin cancers, including basal cell and squamous cell cancers, is a critical application for this technology. The need for a timely diagnosis and treatment of skin cancers makes finding more time efficient diagnostic methods a top priority, and AI may help improve dermatologists' performance and facilitate care in the absence of dermatology expertise. Beyond diagnosis, for more severe cases, AI may help in predicting therapeutic response and replacing or reinforcing input from multidisciplinary teams. AI may also help in designing novel therapeutics. Despite this potential, enthusiasm in AI must be tempered by realistic expectations regarding performance. AI can only perform as well as the information that is used to train it, and development and implementation of new guidelines to improve transparency around training and performance of algorithms is key for promoting confidence in new systems. Special emphasis should be placed on the role of dermatologists in curating high-quality datasets that reflect a range of skin tones, diagnoses, and clinical scenarios. For ultimate success, dermatologists must not be wary of AI as a potential replacement for their expertise, but as a new tool to complement their diagnostic acumen and extend patient care.

Abstract:Background: Cosmetic dermatology is a growing field as more patients are seeking treatments for esthetic concerns. Traditionally, practitioners and patients utilize their own perceptions, current beauty standards, and manual observation to determine their satisfaction with cosmetic interventions. Artificial intelligence (AI) can be introduced into cosmetic dermatology to provide objective data-driven recommendations to both dermatologists and patients. Objective: The purpose of this paper is to compose a unified review that illustrates the various facets of artificial intelligence and formulate a hypothesis regarding the new implications of artificial intelligence in cosmetic dermatology specifically. Methods: A comprehensive search on PubMed was conducted to identify the available information related to AI in cosmetic dermatology. The search was conducted using a combination of keywords including "cosmetic dermatology" and "artificial intelligence." Results: The current literature indicates that AI models offer personalized, efficient, and result-driven outputs that can enhance cosmetic outcomes, patient satisfaction, and overall experience. Conclusion: Artificial intelligence integration in cosmetic dermatology shows a promising future, offering the ability to analyze vast data sets and deliver a tailored patient experience. By incorporating AI into cosmetic dermatology, there is an opportunity to balance evidence-based decision-making with the artistic human touch of cosmetic dermatologists.

Abstract:Summary The use of artificial intelligence (AI) continues to establish itself in the most diverse areas of medicine at an increasingly fast pace. Nevertheless, many healthcare professionals lack the basic technical understanding of how this technology works, which severely limits its application in clinical settings and research. Thus, we would like to discuss the functioning and classification of AI using melanoma as an example in this review to build an understanding of the technology behind AI. For this purpose, elaborate illustrations are used that quickly reveal the technology involved. Previous reviews tend to focus on the potential applications of AI, thereby missing the opportunity to develop a deeper understanding of the subject matter that is so important for clinical application. Malignant melanoma has become a significant burden for healthcare systems. If discovered early, a better prognosis can be expected, which is why skin cancer screening has become increasingly popular and is supported by health insurance. The number of experts remains finite, reducing their availability and leading to longer waiting times. Therefore, innovative ideas need to be implemented to provide the necessary care. Thus, machine learning offers the ability to recognize melanomas from images at a level comparable to experienced dermatologists under optimized conditions.

Abstract:The prevalence of dermatological conditions in primary care, coupled with challenges such as dermatologist shortages and rising consultation costs, highlights the need for innovative solutions. Artificial intelligence (AI) holds promise for improving the diagnostic analysis of skin lesion images, potentially enhancing patient care in primary settings. This systematic review following PRISMA guidelines examined primary studies (2012–2022) assessing AI algorithms' diagnostic accuracy for skin diseases in primary care. Studies were screened for eligibility based on their availability in the English language and exclusion criteria, with risk of bias evaluated using QUADAS-2. PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science were searched. Fifteen studies (2019–2022), primarily from Europe and the USA, focusing on diagnostic accuracy were included. Sensitivity ranged from 58% to 96.1%, with accuracies varying from 0.41 to 0.93. AI applications encompassed triage and diagnostic support across diverse skin conditions in primary care settings, involving both patients and primary care professionals. While AI demonstrates potential for enhancing the accuracy of skin disease diagnostics in primary care, further research is imperative to address study heterogeneity and ensure algorithm reliability across diverse populations. Future investigations should prioritise robust dataset development and consider representative patient samples. Overall, AI may improve dermatological diagnosis in primary care, but careful consideration of algorithm limitations and implementation strategies is required.
